hi friend as your biggest fan u already know im always gonna hype u up so have my lengthy answers to the ask game:
1. My fav fic of yours - flight risk......im pretty sure its the first fic of yours ive ever read but oh god its SO good erics character and everything abt it ??? Had me feeling butterflies so many times i screamed and yelled into my pillow. Also inspired me a lot in my writing slump and like... i dont wanna be cheesy but helped me mentally bc i read it when i was having a rough time 😭👍 but also PARTY PEOPLE !!!!! so good. SO so good. oh and also the sunwoo hoodie drabble owns my ass i reread it like 5 times already
2. My fav chapter in my fav fic of yours - not my fav fic but the kiss scene in the practice room in off the record ??? slaps
3. The best character youve written for - swing my way eric honestly. so authentic to him imo TT i just adore his character in that fic a whole lot.
6. Something i remember vividly - that scene from flight risk when eric asked sunwoo if he wants to go skate w them and sunwoo goes "no, im down" and eric is like wtf and so sunwoo goes "no, im down. laying down in my bed" or something (the memory is not 100% vivid as u can see) but I legit slapped my knee that was PEAK COMEDY for me
7. Something that made me emotional after reading - that one chapter of somewhere only we know when intak describes how he wishes he could hear his brothers voice sometimes because if he missed him in that way maybe it would hurt less. That whole series is...very personal to me in sense of grief :,)
8. What i like the most about your writing - THE UNIVERSES U CREATE and like. The friendships and the characterization of each character and how theyre all their own person and not just a tool for plot. Also your comedy in fics it always has me giggling
9. A fic im excited for you to post - sangyeons love in unity fic bc i need to know whats up w that secret gf
12. A fic of yours ive reread - hoodie talk LMAO
13. Have i talked to anyone else abt your fics - yes i fangirled to my friend abt u multiple times also we talked abt rhapsody anonymous after it came out 😭👍
YOU. i will actually ksbfkenfkndkfnf 😭 i love u, bar !!! ur support of me has literally been the saving grace to my writing motivation; every time i write something, i always have u in the back of my mind and i wonder what you'd say/react and if you'll like it 🤧
makes me really happy to hear that my writing helped you through a rough time in your life 😔 i wrote party people and flight risk and even hoodie talk during a ,,, emotionally stiff part of my life where i felt super isolated and emotionally constipated, so it's good to know that the feelings i wanted translated *were* translated correctly, if that makes sense
HELLO I LOVE THE PRACTICE ROOM KISS TOO SKFNDKFNJFNF sorry coughs uhm haha def not like biased or anything *looks away*
OMG THAT LINE FROM FLIGHT RISK 💀 i actually thought i was so clever for that one, thank u for mentioning it and sknfkd YAY thank god u found it funny 😭😭 IN GENERAL, the fact that u find me funny at ALL is like ,,, im punching the sky rn im actually celebrating 🤧
ik i prob said this in the reblog of that one chapter of the intak fic, but that series also holds a really tender place in my heart :') grief is one of the things i feel like isn't written abt very much here, and i always seem to leave traces of it wherever i go, so it's nice to know someone can connect to the grief theme </3
thank you thank you thank you for all you've done for me (more than you even know), and for just being so flippin cool :'))) 💖

20+ Books That You (Might Actually Want) To Read During Pride Month!
Right, so. I got annoyed after seeing the list referenced in this post last night, told myself that my books are all packed up so I couldn’t do anything about it, and lasted all of a whopping 10 minutes before picking up my phone and attempting to make my own list instead. Behold, my from-memory attempt to present 20 books with strong LGBTQ plots, characters, and/or authors, that DON’T just rely on Suffering and Identity Politics and are... you know... fun.
Listed in alphabetical order by title. Links take you to Bookshop.org, where you can buy them from your local independent bookstore at a discount and NOT from the evil empire.
1. A Master of Djinn – P. Djeli Clark * author of color * steampunk Cairo in 1912 * djinn! magic! murder mystery! * butch Arab lesbian main character * devout hijabi Muslim badass assistant * anticolonial alternate history
2. An Accident of Stars – Foz Meadows (Sequel: A Tyranny of Queens) * trans author * bi, pan, trans, aro representation * racially diverse characters * all female POV characters * high-fantasy world adventures
3. Boyfriend Material – Alexis Hall * queer author * look I love this book SO MUCH and have absolutely screamed about it before but also I LOVE IT SO MUCH * contemporary M/M fake dating in modern London, complete with full cast of disaster found-family queer friends * it is. fucking. HILARIOUS. I almost died the first time reading it * there is a sequel called HUSBAND MATERIAL scheduled to be released in 2022; I am a normal amount of excited for this book
4. Gideon the Ninth – Tamsyn Muir (Sequel: Harrow the Ninth) * the book cover says “Lesbian necromancers explore a haunted palace in space!” * that is exactly what you get * slow-burn enemies-to-lovers F/F main romance * I cannot describe this book, it is dark, genre-bendy, science fiction-y, Hunger-Games-with-lesbian-necromancers-in space? Kinda? I have literally never read anything like it * also fucking HILARIOUS
5. One Last Stop – Casey McQuiston * queer author (who wrote Red White and Royal Blue) * bisexual fat girl from the South/lesbian-daughter-of-Chinese immigrants from the 1970s-riot-grrl main romance * time traveling mystery involving the Q train in Brooklyn (mentions Brighton Beach ahem) * magical realism * many more found-family chaotic queers including a trans Latino psychic and a Black accountant by day/drag queen by night and the mean little gay disaster who has a hopeless crush on them
6. Parasol Protectorate (series) – Gail Carriger * this is one of my favorite series, and there are five books: Soulless, Changeless, Blameless, Heartless, and Timeless * steampunk vampires/werewolves late Victorian London, like Jane Austen crossed with P.G. Wodehouse (they are all fucking hilarious) * pretty much everyone is queer; we got your flamboyantly camp gay vampires (Lord Akeldama ftw!) We got your gay werewolves! We got your lesbian French inventors! We got your big disaster idiot werewolf main male love interest! We got your crazy adventures! You name it we got it! * two spin-off novellas: Romancing the Werewolf (M/M) and Romancing the Inventor (F/F) * she has a ton more books in this same universe and writes sexy queer supernatural romance as G.L. Carriger
7. Plain Bad Heroines – Emily M. Danforth * queer author * historical horror-comedy set between a haunted girls’ school in early-1900s New England and in the modern day * all sapphic female main characters * plays with style/form/voice, a story within a story within a story

9. Rosaline Palmer Takes The Cake – Alexis Hall * same author as Boyfriend Material, this is his newest * bisexual female protagonist * absolutely perfect satire of The Great British Bake Off (you can tell this man has watched EVERY SINGLE SERIES and all of the holiday specials) * sweet and surprisingly thoughtful

13. The Hate Project – Kris Ripper * nonbinary/genderqueer author * M/M enemies to lovers/sex with no strings attached (spoiler alert: strings attached) * HECKING HILARIOUS * sweet, escapist, and very low stakes * diverse characters, including fat protagonist with realistic anxiety disorder
14. The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy – Mackenzi Lee * PIRATES, obviously * sequel to Gentleman’s Guide * asexual female protagonist * strong queerplatonic f/f friendship * more historical/magical 18th century adventures
15. The Last Rune (series) – Mark Anthony * Imma be real with you chief, I haven’t read this series since I was a clueless teenager with no idea why I liked Gay Stuff so much, so if it does turn out to suck now, don’t throw rotten veggies at me * but especially since it was written in the NINETIES, this series was hella progressive?! * gay characters, disabled characters, characters of color, all playing significant and heroic roles in six-book epic fantasy cycle * people from Earth end up in high-fantasy world of Eldh * endgame M/M romance for the main character * books out of print, I think, but you can find them cheap somewhere like AbeBooks; first one (Beyond the Pale) linked above
16. The Library of the Unwritten – A.J. Hackwith * queer author * heaven-hell-Valhalla supernatural adventures * The Good Place x Good Omens x Lucifer x The Librarians * Pansexual Black badass female heroine * Queer found families * The Sassiest TM Bisexual Villain Turned Reluctant Hero (is he my favorite? Why on earth would you think that.)
17. The Priory of the Orange Tree – Samantha Shannon * epic doorstopper science fiction/historical fantasy set in a vaguely 16th-century world * main F/F romance between a queen and her sorceress bodyguard * sassy old gay alchemist whose backstory will give you Feelings * so many strong women and characters of color * no homophobia! marriage is fully gender-neutral, spouses are called “companions”
18. The Song of Achilles – Madeline Miller * likewise one you have probably heard of but still * a little light on the myth/historical part imho, but the writing is beautiful and will give you many feelings * M/M romance between Achilles and Patroclus  * reimagining of The Iliad (her other book Circe is also really good)
19 The Stars are Legion – Kameron Hurley * all-female apocalyptic space opera * messy messy antiheroines * grimdark war fantasy * queer sci-fi drama
20. Witchmark – C.L. Polk * author of color * M/M romance * main character is a veteran and a doctor dealing with his own hidden magic and repressed war trauma * gaslamp fantasy set in a world reminiscent of post-WWI England * strong sibling relationship

20 for the ghosts asks
Thank you for asking and indulging me, and prepare for me to gush unashamedly. (I've been waiting for this one, turn it up!)
20. who is your favourite ghosts creator (artist/fic writer/or person who posts abt ghosts a lot etc)?
I've decided to mention a few favourites for each of these mediums because trying to narrow it down would be utterly impossible (and also this'll give me an opportunity to show some love to my favourite creators without feeling like I'm overstepping, etc.).
It wouldn't feel right to start anywhere else than with @gayvillains and @inkyfishesii. The very first three Ghosts fanfics I read were written by these two creators respectively, and I have never ever come across such writing that I've adored so instantly. Initially, after finishing (what then was) both series of Ghosts, I was looking for some Captain-centric fics and I came across ‘I've Got Termites in the Framework (So Do You)’. Not only did this fic do a superb job of portraying the Captain and Julian, but it introduced me to the concept of Captain/Julian and completely convinced of this particular pairing within like, the first two or three chapters. I went on to read ‘Performative’ and ‘Going Down’ (I think they were recommended in the author's notes of Termites) and was thoroughly gripped by both. Personally, I think everyone should read all the Ghosts fics written by these two, especially Julian enjoyers.
These two writers do an amazingly good job of putting these characters in slightly more serious situations than canon would allow (it is, after all, a light comedy) while still maintaining the overall tone of the show and the characters. I mean, their portrayals of Julian in particular just hit all the right notes for me. They manage to give his character a lot more depth without softening or changing who he is fundamentally, which is no easy feat with Julian. gayvillains does such a wonderful job of portraying the world through Julian's eyes, so much so that you can feel the influence of his character in the diction and tone. Also the way he describes like, the surroundings, the little things that the characters notice and stuff (“and stuff”, can you tell I'm good with words?) makes me feel like I'm right there in the story with the characters rather than just reading about them. inkyfishesii's encyclopaedic knowledge of British politics really lends an authenticity to her portrayal of Julian. There have been many times where I've had to stop reading a fic, throw my phone down and just yell about how perfect a line or moment is. (I'm still not over Julian numbering his smiles, because that is so painfully in character, and it feasts on my mind like maggots on a rotting piece of meat.)
I'd also like to mention Etheostoma (on AO3). Every fic has managed to take me on some type of emotional journey, and I still get goosebumps when I so much as think about ‘Touch Too Much’. Their portrayal of the Captain specifically, especially when he's in an introspective mood, is so gut-wrenchingly beautiful.
Oh, and @toomanyfandomsneverenoughtime for their tireless work in spreading the Fawthorne agenda. Most fics are explicit, which I know is not everyone's cup of tea, but they're really well done and I am very much onboard.
As far as Ghosts artists go, none are more dear to me than @belfryduck, @oochilka, @master-of-the-stars and @habibi-queer. There are many, many incredible Ghosts artists, but these four just take the cake for me. oochilka's style reminds me a lot of Quentin Blake illustrations, which I love very much (I'm pretty sure I've still got ‘Mister Magnolia’ around somewhere). belfryduck always manages to capture the essence of the ghosts perfectly, especially Julian and Humphrey. master-of-the-stars's Julian and Robin are very precious to me, and their JC Leyendecker-inspired art of the ghosts knocks it out of the park every single time. I couldn't tell you exactly what it is that draws me to habibi-queer's art (other than the fact that it is amazing), but I feel it in my soul. Sometimes it genuinely feels like they're creating specifically for me, because it consistently hits all the right spots.
I think it's fair to say that I enjoy the content of every person I follow who posts about Ghosts, so if I follow you and you're a fellow Ghosts enjoyer, then I am talking about you. That being said, I particularly enjoy seeing @historicalsnail, @simonfarnabyslegs and @weepylucifer on my dash, and I am going to need them to keep on keeping on for the sake of everything that is good and evil in this world.
This answer got so out of hand so quickly and I apologise to everyone who is going to see this, but at the same time, y'all should definitely check these creators out.

Shattered glass
I did it! I kissed him. But why does it hurt? Why this pain in my heart. All those moments meant nothing. My cheeks felt wet. I pulled away looking down. I couldn’t bear another moment of these. I dashed away but the pain hasn’t gone yet. I cried my heart out. Finally, I made it home. I wish it had rained so he wouldn’t have seen my tears.
I wish he grabbed and held me close to his heart. I would put blinds on my eyes and believe his lies. reality knew better than to give in to my sweet desires.
You want to know what happened. I am sure you read between the lines and inquisitively thought she fell in love with the most popular boy and he played with her. Well, sir, you are right on the money. This is how things you when you are vulnerable, you turn blind to the most obvious of matter.
My life shifted to a movie of a series of unfortunate events starring me. My father worked as an R&D researcher in a pharmaceutical company while my mom was a housewife as they call. She decided to quit her job when she had me so she take care of me because as she says and I quote " I heard so many stories of nannies hitting children and killing them that I couldn't bear leaving you alone." She really loved us more than our father not that he want to admit. They were the image that pops into your head when you think of a happily married couple. I had to tell them more than once, please do not flirt in public what will the people say. I can't blame my father really, she was gorgeous. Her hair is hazelnut like mine but with sunkissed highlights reaching her shoulders. She kept her short but insists that I don't cut mine. None of her children had her light green eyes with black lines and red spots or my father's brown-green eyes. I read somewhere an author describes as woodland eyes. The closest one to those eyes are baby Angelica or as I determined to call after my friend Hannah taught me Malak which is an angel in Arabic.
The sad comedy happened when they played their roles like in the book. Some sick arsonist started a fire in the hotel where my parents went for a conference. I don't the book mentioned how hard is it to identify burnt bodies. I left my brother and sister at my neighbor's apartment and went with the police officers to identify my parents. I was at the denial stage. "They aren't really dead. " or "this is all a bad dream" or "they wake up at any time." I didn't react when I saw a charcoaled body but I couldn't get close to the tin bed with my parents' body covered with a white sheet. I always feared something would happen to them when they left me with my sibling but I always never stop praying for their safe return.
Nobody talks about what to do when someone dear to you dies. Yes, the talk of the 5 stages of grief or how death is a normal phenomenon. but no one tells you that your life changes. I wish there was a GCSE course that explain what to do when your parents die. I am 16 turning 17 in May, finishing my semester in three months. I am supposed to find a morgue to help me bury my parents. I am supposed to tell a 7-year-old his parents won't tuck him in from now on or take care of a toddler who's one year and just started talking two to four words. I am supposed to post on social media that I need prayers for my lost family. I am supposed to call my relatives who I call every now and then and who live miles away from us. I am supposed to be brave tomorrow when I go back to school.
Nevertheless, the only thing I manage to do was vent out my heart that keeps riping itself in a ribcage closing in on it making it hard to breathe. I dropped onto a couch in the waiting area hugging my leg trying to cut down the volume of my scream and sobs. Each time I tried to take a breath to stop, but my body won't let.
Before I knew it, I was at my neighbor's at 3 am with no reconciliation of the events that took place beforehand. The only thing I know is my eyes hurt and I have the worst headache.
Mrs Burtam was kind enough to open the door for me when the sun was going up in seconds She led me to the guest bedroom where my brother and sister are sound a sleep. I stared at them wondering how tomorrow will work out.
To be continued...

A Review of Every Single Episode of Inside No. 9 [1/2]
Disclaimer: my opinions are not definitive but they are bloody good. There may be spoilers so read at your own risk. This will probably have to be a two-parter for the sake of my sanity and your scrolling.
Series 1
1. Sardines
A killer way to kick off a series with an absolutely top notch cast. This episode probably wins the award for the episode I’ve spent the most time thinking about after watching, putting all the little things that went over my head at first into place. I love the set design in this episode as well with everything seeming delightfully old fashioned.
2. A Quiet Night In
This episode is something of a masterclass in farce and it is a Bold Move to have the second episode of a new series almost completely free of dialogue. It’s dirty, it’s fully of silly slapstick and it’s a nice change of pace after the rather harrowing ending to the first episode.
3. Tom and Gerri
This is an episode I enjoyed more when I thought about it more. It beautifully shows the decline of Tom’s mental health (acted impeccably, lovely work from Reece) due to grief. Also it was quite nice to see Reece and Steve acting opposite each other more, they have great chemistry together and Steve as Migg is perfectly unsettling.
4. Last Gasp
Now, I have to be honest with you: I do not exclusively have glowing praise for this episode. I enjoyed it far more after watching it more than once as I liked the humour of it. One of my favourite things was the video camera perspective at the start, as well as some lovely moments with the music. However, I’m not overly keen on the ending, I just found it slightly underwhelming.
5. The Understudy
Back on the praise train kids! I am a big old Shakespeare nerd (as are Reece and Steve, apparently) and I studied Macbeth for my GCSEs so I was particularly excited when I watched it. I will also have to give a little nod to the directing of this episode, it was an absolute feast for the eyes.
6. The Harrowing
Oh hell yes (no pun intended). I think this episode is a great one to cap off the first series, really demonstrating the versatility of Steve and Reece. Also, I’m a big horror fan and the entire atmosphere of it really appealed to me. Though I would say that the second I saw that house I would have run about fifteen miles in the opposite direction.
Series 2
1. La Couchette
This episode is very similar to Sardines in the sense that it feels rather claustrophobic, but this time it leans far more towards the comedy side of things rather than drama. Bonus points for Steve demonstrating his German skills.
2. The 12 Days of Christine
Ah yes, the episode I’ve cried at every time I’ve watched it. This one is a strong demonstration of how to wrong foot an audience: you never quite know what’s going on until towards the end and all of the horror-esque moments just add to the confusion making the ending one hell of an emotional gut-punch. I wouldn’t watch it if you need something to cheer you up, though.
3. The Trial of Elizabeth Gadge
My second favourite episode of series two, The Trial of Elizabeth Gadge is packed to the brim with silly puns and smutty jokes. I personally predicted the twist but in this case I don’t think it really mattered as I was too busy enjoying the Horrible Histories for adults thing that was going on. Bonus points for another killer cast.
4. Cold Comfort
The first of two episodes directed by Steve and Reece and really quite a bold one at that. The whole thing is filmed in the style of a CCTV feed, which I’m pretty sure an experienced director would warn you off trying, but it really pays off in the narrative. Since the camera doesn’t switch focus at any point, it really relies on the acting performances to keep your focus which, in my opinion, the cast fucking nailed.
5. Nana’s Party
If I had to describe the episode in two words they would be ‘domestic drama’. It’s a fairly classic setup of a family with their fair share of secrets, namely adultery and alcoholism, but happily doesn’t give the game away too early and a layer of humour is added by the slightly irritating prankster character of Pat. It’s the second episode of the series directed by Steve and Reece and has a sort of understated quality to it, showing Claire Skinner’s character’s exacting nature above a layer of familial drama.
6. Séance Time
My favourite episode of series two, at first you think you’re walking into another haunted house scenario until you find out it’s a prank show that went off the air due to a scandal. There’s a great sense of humour throughout, and I don’t know whether I’m easily freaked out or the final jumpscare was genuinely terrifying but I flew about fifteen feet into the air when I saw it. Once I’d peeled myself off the ceiling, I really appreciated that it felt like a slow burn horror despite still only being half an hour.
Series 3
1. The Devil of Christmas
I live for schlocky horror films that are so cheesy they give you nightmares if you watch them before bed. So the 1970s film within the episode, accompanied by a director’s commentary-cum-police interview performed by Derek Jacobi, was an absolute treat. The story of Krampus is one that has been done a lot, but never as a snuff film (as far as I know) so it was a nice little twist.
2. The Bill
Every time I rewatch Inside No. 9 this is the episode I always have to watch no matter what. It is such a simple premise and it feels slightly reminiscent of the Geoff, Mike and Brian sketches from The League of Gentlemen. Now is probably the moment where I should sing the praises of director Guillem Morales who has, quite frankly, become my personal hero having seen the many, many episodes of this series he’s directed. The framing in this episode is absolutely genius, but it’s only really obvious after you’ve watched it a few times and I have to give kudos for making a dialogue-heavy episode visually interesting. There are jokes that I think about at least twice a week and I am obsessed with Jason Watkins’ acting...I think this will be my longest review of this whole post.
3. The Riddle of the Sphinx
This is the best episode I will never watch again. I love horror, and I’ve watched some bone-chilling films but something about this episode made me feel so uncomfortable. It is also a real testament to Steve Pemberton, who I’m led to believe is the cryptic crossword fan who took the lead writing this episode, that he wrote something involving cryptic crosswords that didn’t give me a migraine.
4. Empty Orchestra
Ah, what a nice change of pace after the last episode with something far lighter. The karaoke booth concept is so fun and I’ve never understood the criticism of the episode. That being said, of every single antagonist in every single episode of Inside No. 9, Connie is the character I love to hate the most. All of the characters feel more like people you’ve met before and the vibe of a group of work colleagues in a karaoke booth going through the usual petty drama feels familiar. I think series three is one that has some of the darkest concepts and this is a great exception to that.
5. Diddle Diddle Dumpling
When I looked in the background more while rewatching this episode, I noticed a lot of things were in twos. I can only assume that was a deliberate choice made somewhere along the line, and one that pays off when you notice it. Both Mat Baynton and Keeley Hawes played their parts to perfection, with Mat really doing quite a lot with a fairly small part. The whole episode reads as an interesting analysis of grief, in a similar sense to Tom and Gerri. Also, Reece’s character did not murder the remaining twin and apparently I’m the weirdo for thinking that was what was being implied. In my defence, there was cannibalism earlier in the series; filicide did not seem like that big of a leap.
6. Private View
Agatha Christie eat your heart out (that wasn’t meant to be a reference to the ending, it’s just a happy accident). Murder mysteries are my absolute jam so I am obsessed with this episode. The modern art show is such a great setting for a whodunnit as demonstrated by the reaction to the discovery of Peter Kay’s character’s body. All the characters have their brilliant little quirks, and the killer is revealed at the perfect time and it was a good idea to not make that reveal the twist.

New 52 TEEN TITANS #3 Read Along - The fact this got made is still shocking.
Tumblr media
It’s been a while since I done one of these. It’s probably been since last year or so. This isn’t so much of a formal review where I try my best to explain why something doesn’t work, with tons of back references, or interviews, and contexts, and such. I might do some of that, but I’m mostly just writing this along the same time I continue to read it.
I’ve already done the first two issues, and if I can I’ll link them in the post somewhere.
Basically, this series gets about everything wrong about the returning Core Four for this reboot. They made Cassie the tomboy a “girly” thief, Conner the punky flirt a creepy emotionally numb stalker, Tim the insecure dork a super genius that blew up part of a freaking skyscraper, and Bart the teen with an attention span problem into an arrogant jerkwad loudmouth.
With the origins later given in the series, the boys are revealed to not reaally be the characters we knew at all in a more literal sense. This Conner is a clone of an alternate version of Jon, not Clark and Lex. This Tim Drake, is literally only Tim Drake in name only, as that’s the name this teen got in witness protection. And this Bart Allen, isn’t even related to Barry.
So these are versions of the characters that are them in literally name only, bar Cassie (sadly). Although, they’d later retconned Tim’s origin back (which doesn’t make sense). But what else can I compare them to but the originals?
--
Tumblr media
A really common criticism of this series, and one that’s pretty dang valid in my opinion. Is just how unlikable everyone is-- or at least the Core Four, because I feel like we can all be honest and say that most people just read this for the Core Four, and sometimes Bunker. (Like Bart’s condescending here. Like “I’m Kid Flash, girl.” Maybe I’m just reading it too 1940s, but it comes off as really dickish.)
I mean seriously, how many people do you know talk abut Skitter? The original characters that Lobdell came up with are really hit and miss for me, mostly miss. Because I find Skitter so forgettable, that even though I’ve read the first few issues of this series just for entertainment value, I still forget she exists. She could’ve been so much more interesting, but he just doesn’t give her much.
To me, a good character has a personality that you can notice, grab onto, and have lots of unique stories with, that simply work, not even because it causes a great drama, but just because the perspective the character will have in any situation depending on the circumstance will be interesting.
Which is one of the reasons why I find Tim an interesting character, because his perspective is one that’s very interactive with any given circumstances but will still work for me. An insecure, super hero fanboy, that’s doing his best to be brave, but is secretly scared, with the cleverness to do things, but the anxiety that he can’t. Which the circumstances they give him, like having to make sure he proves he should be Robin, having parents at home, not feeling like he’s good enough, constantly seeing others better them him. It’ll just make him an interesting perspective to read from that won’t get too repetitive in any way that interferes with the enjoyment, because there’s a lot of levels you can take his harsh feelings, or things to interact with, that it won’t always be predictable what’s going to happen with him, and you want to read to see more.
With this series and quite a bunch of other original characters made, they have soap opera writing. Which works with fleshed out characters like the iconic 80s incarnation of the Teen Titans, but when the new characters don’t have a well-formed personality that you can really grab onto and gain constant interest and intrigue from, you just have a lame duck.
When your main character’s traits are “I’m angsty and sad”. No one is going to be able to invest themselves with that. They need to be more third dimensional and genuine to make them a character you want to pick up each issue for.
This series even with the old characters fails at that, by making them into absolute butchered heaps of rotted rump rather than their full personalities.
At least the art is pretty creative early on in it’s second page, I will give it that.
Tumblr media
--
Then there’s Bunker--
Tumblr media
--who I really want to like, but just can’t find myself enjoying.
A lot of these characters I’m unfamiliar with I want to like. They’re minority characters with very interesting concepts, but writing so flat that it ruins any chance of paying attention to them. A common curse when it comes to POC and a bad writer like Lobdell.
But Bunker actually has a personality, but the reason why I can’t find myself attaching myself to him is because he feels like an uncomfortable stereotype character. An outdated one that you’d see in the 80s or 90s to either seem inclusive or use as a joke rather than a true deal character.
Bunker is a flamboyant, religious, fashion involved, gay, Latino. Something that feels like you’d really bet he wouldn’t be if he wasn’t gay or Latino, because it’s just all based in stereotypes. Like if the pages weren’t colored, and you didn’t have the context he was gay, you’d probably still guess what he’s supposed to be just because of how much they involve stereotypes with him.
Tumblr media
However, despite the stereotypes, he is the one most people can remember from this series beyond the core four, because he at least has a personality, and they actually try to build up a unique mystery to him, that would make you want to continue to know them.
Tumblr media
And there is something about his confidence and religious beliefs, and determination that does feel very genuine, and makes you actually like him despite the stereotypes.
Tumblr media
You want to know what makes you able to tell he’s a better made character than the other relatively new, to straight up new characters? You can actually talk about him, and have a lot more to say about them then his backstory, two personality traits, and angst. Even if his personality seems limited at first, they still write it in a way that’s genuine enough that you can get more out of it, a lot like what I was describing with Tim earlier.
He still feels like a character that you could write a solo about, and with a good enough writer and personal life, would actually make for a very rereadable series, because you just enjoy seeing him on his journey, because it won’t always be the same exact things. He has loyal personality traits about him, but depending on his circumstances, it won’t be the same side of him you’re seeing, and it won’t feel contrived. He has potential to become a true third dimensional character, and not one that just feels like he looks like one, but isn’t really.
But that depends on where the writing goes with him-- and I can’t remember where it goes. But take away the dated stereotypes and there’s actual good potential with Bunker. Making your character feel like another decade’s minority caricature is kind of a turn off when it comes to feeling comfortable reading them.
Which is why some don’t tend to like him.
--
Tumblr media
There’s not a lot to say about this quick page of Cassie, besides the fact they make her come across as apathetic and nuts. She’s also mildly sexualized given it looks like she’s posing for a fashion shoot and not just closing a door, which feels pretty typical of the team that made this book.
--
Tumblr media
And because of Lobdell’s bizarre writing and tone changes, I don’t know if this is supposed to be taken as serious or comedy, because of how abrupt it is, and how a fight broke out right after and we find out the old guy is Tim somehow convincing someone he isn’t like-- 15? I think he’d be either 14 or 15, not because that’s how Lobdell intended him to be, because I believe in a now lost interview he said Tim was “probably” 16 or 17. However, they didn’t settle on Tim’s age till Damian was near thirteen, meaning Tim would’ve been either fourteen or fifteen here, depending if Damian was eleven as I remember, or ten at the start of the New 52.
Tumblr media
And here’s some more out of character Tim, because New 52 is what you get when you skim through Red Robin without any context, and being edgy is still really popular with the teenage demographic at the time.
This is a Tim that blew up a building, is an incel towards Cassie, and is overall an arrogant prick.
How Lobdell thought anyone thought any of a good idea is beyond me, but I figure he’s just not self-aware enough to realize that he just made one of the most unlikable protagonists I’ve ever seen, and absolutely bastardized who was once a mega-fan-favorite.
Tumblr media
Although, this is pretty cute and in-character. It’s something that definitely fits in with a classic Tim comic, but down let this make you think Lobdell knows how to write Tim, because he makes it really obvious all the time that he doesn’t really.
--
And that’s basically everything relevant that happens in this issue-- not a lot when you actually read it, and not just me spouting off the proverbial mouth as I try my best to mentally process this freaking comic.
Conner doesn’t even show up, most likely because he was the only one with a solo, that Lobdell was also writing (you can probably guess accurately what the quality of that was too).
A lot of it is just more of the same, and it’s tedious, although it’s tedious nature is not so much on Lobdell, as he’s said in interviews before that it was editorial or a publisher (I can’t remember to be honest) that made him not have them previously know each other. So he had to work from that.
Which goes to show just how much DC knows how their characters and teams work, given the reason why Young Justice worked so well was because Tim, Conner, and Bart, already had stories where they duo’d up, and teamed up before they were even official. Which allowed them to have a preconceived friendship, they could build dynamics that were naturally built off of their unique personalities, which made everything feel natural and good to go when they did have an official team comic.
Here you have a Tim, that’s supposed to be very much a rookie of only one year, acting like he’s the greatest protégé talent ever, searching out for metahumans and coincidentally running into them, just to make some kind of story that would explain them being together for a team.
I’m not saying they have to redo the duo stuff again, because I’m pretty sure most readers already know their dynamics, and as for new readers, it doesn’t take a lot of time to say “We’re just good friends that like hanging out” does it? They have issue zeroes for each comic for a reason, they could’ve easily had a nice summary there if they wanted.
New 52′s obsession with trying to fit everything they can in, but have everyone still be relatively new, made everything a mess.
Like isn’t it weird that Superman only started being a super hero FOUR YEARS before Tim was? Doesn’t that sound entirely too squeezed in?
Then because they messed with the characters so much it works less for old readers as well. Like they have Tim, only a year in, acting like all the out of character elements of Red Robin, with an origin that’s a Bizarro styled mirror of his original one, with nothing that made him the popular character he used to be.
Same for the others.
New 52 is partially scary, because it shows just how little they know about what made them work.
I’m not against reboots in comics as a concept, they do need some modernization, and clean-ups every now and again, but you have to keep what works in there, or else the reboot will be a total failure. And paint-jobs and fan service like Rebirth aren’t gonna work either, when the heart of it all is still just so bad.
All this is a lot easier to say in hindsight, but DC Comics really has to work towards remembering their mistakes if they actually want to get better again. They’re doing a bit better at it, as forced and contrived as it can be sometimes. So they are getting somewhere.
But this is only the start of a Didio-less era. Looking like good things are coming, and little presents that truly make it seem true, is something that’s only going to last for a little bit. They have to still do the work, and learn what worked for their characters in the first place, and reremember who they all are.
Otherwise sales will just get worse again.
But I’m genuinely hoping they’ll at least begin to learn from mistakes. No one gets a win otherwise.
--
Oh, and he’s the entirety of the fight advertised on the cover. “Red Robin vs. Bunker”.
Tumblr media
They stop fighting right after this.
It’s the comic book equivalent of clickbait if I’ve ever seen it in my entire life.

For the Star Wars asks: 3, 14, and 38?
O God in Heaven Help Me, @the-coruscanti-blogger, these are so hard, but. Okay. *rubs hands together* Let’s do this.
I’m so sorry if it’s a little chaotic!
3. Favorite Character from the Prequels
*sighs* This is a hard question for me. Reaaaaallllly hard. I will answer with one, but I must add my next two favorite Prequel Era characters because I feel it would be wrong not to, that’s how much I like them.
Obi-Wan Kenobi
Anakin Skywalker (I’m sorry your no. 1 is my no. 2! 🥺)
Asajj Ventress (technically she’s from TCW, but it’s still the same time period, so…)
14. If I Could Change One Two (technically three) Thing(s) About the Star Wars Universe, What Would it They Be?
Let’s make it two(ish). Asajj Ventress (I would have loved to see her helping out the galaxy when she could, being an awesome Gray Jedi, you know? It would’ve been so cool) and Ben Solo would live, and somehow, I don’t know, the seven traditional forms of Jedi lightsaber dueling would be revived.
38. Fic Recommendations (this was the easiest one for me.)
Mission Report by Ruth Baulding
This is amazingly hilarious. This was one of the first Star Wars fics I ever read. It’s Anakin and Obi-Wan writing a report for the Jedi Council. That’s it.
Live Broadcast by Ruth Baulding
Anakin and Obi-Wan from the point of view of a holo-jockey on a Separatist-annexed planet. It involves a lot of comedy, and it’s really good.
You Shall Become (Me) by Jedipati
How to describe this? This is AU comedy gold. Let me just use the author’s own summary, because their words are the best. “The Guardian of the Sith Temple doesn't particularly care for the new breed of Sith, for all that they've been around for 1,000 years. But they're the only Sith the Guardian knows about. Until one day… Alternately, "How to accidentally join the Sith without really trying."”
Quintessence by Mathematica
This shifts POV from Anakin and Obi-Wan to that of the Jedi Council as The Team reports to them about their latest mission.
Essence of Amity by Above the Winter Moonlight
Inspired by the previous fic, Anakin and Obi-Wan are assigned to a diplomatic mission somewhere out in the middle of nowhere, and everything possible goes wrong for the Master and Padawan.
Canzonet by Pyxelle
This is more Obi centric but this is worth the read. Ani and Obi are sent to a planet to mediate a dispute. The problem is, the inhabitants of the planet cannot understand spoken language, they only understand singing.
(I have a thing for comedy featuring The Team 🤣)
Now for something more serious. I know you said that you wouldn’t stop Anakin from turning because then we wouldn’t get Darth Vader — and I also love Darth Vader, but this next fic is so amazing, I’m pretty sure you might (almost) not miss Darth Dadakin.
When Darkness Seems to Hide This Place by IllyanaA
This AU has it all, Skeevy Sheevy being Skeevy and EVIL, spectacular adventures and skin-of-their-teeth rescues, Ani & Obi being bad*ss, honest and open about their emotions, and being the best brothers to ever brother, Anakin being an Amazing Dad, Awesome Ahsoka, nuanced side characters, and a not-dead Asajj Ventress. This is a 50 chapter epic, but I’m telling you, once you start this one, you’ll have a hard time stopping.
Rise, Lord Kenobi by LilyWanKenobi
This is an AU Obitine where Obi-Wan is the heir to the Stewjonian leadership, and as the heir, he is called upon to fulfill his duties upon his father’s death.
The Height of Subtlety by WinterSky101
Bail hosts Padmè, Anakin and Obi-Wan for a dinner party at his place, and no, there are no secret couples in this group, no siree!
One of my jams is Leia makes up with Dad fics, so these are a few:
Father and Daughter by Morwen Tindomerel This references some events from Legends but it’s still quite in canon up to now.
gunpowder and shades of grey by irnan This fic uses the Legends names of Leia’s children, just so you know.
Restless Warrior by Aria Saralyn This is a oneshot longform masterwork. This must be read.
Darkness by Firefly Alchemist After Ben Solo turns to the Dark Side, Anakin comforts his daughter.
Interview With A Sith Lord by KaelinaLovesLomaris
This fic shows that there was more to Captain Piett’s promotion to Admiral than met the eye.
These following fics use the Legends Canon, and these fics by the same author, frodogenic, are so incredibly good that I had to put these on here. It’s an AU fic series that all hinges on the idea that instead of bodily picking up Skeevy Sheevy in RotJ, he used the Force instead to yeet him into the reactor. Luke and Anakin decided to deal with everything else later because the Death Star was about to blow and they have to get out of there. In this ‘verse, Anakin is able to return to the Executor which was still intact because Admiral Piett was able to raise the shields in time for her to avoid her bridge being blown to pieces. However, despite that, her navigation computers have been completely damaged and so, with seconds to spare, they hightail it out of Endor only to land in the Unknown Regions. These fics pick up twenty-some years after RotJ, and are spectacular in their scale. The feels and the snark and the humor are strong with these. You will have emotions in some parts, and want to bust a gut laughing in others. I know I did.
Meet the Skywalkers While this is technically the first in the series, this one is the latest story in the AU. The author is slow to update, but it’s really, really worth every single wait.
Lord Vader’s Limpet Darth Dadakin babysits one of his grandsons.
Driving Lord Vader Anakin Solo goes to the Space DMV to get his license. Only catch? Grandpa’s the one taking him there. From there, it gets funnier, and heartfelt by the end.
Four Letters, Starts With L Luke gets hurt while being all Jedi Master-y and Dad comes to visit him in the hospital. So sweet, it’s cavity inducing.
Late Afternoon by camweasley
Post-TRoS fic. Ben comes when he can.
we’ll sit and talk the stars down from the sky by catefrankie (tumblr is @catefrankie if you’re interested)
Post-TRoS fic. It’s still a dance with them, if not a more simple one. It’s still complicated though.
Catharsis by KCMarsala
This is TRoS fix-it fic with sass, sads and laughs.
Hope May Vanish, But Can Die Not by DancingInTheStorm (@enthusiasticallyobessed)
A TLJ Luke study with a beautiful and touching appearance from Anakin.
I have so many more, but I wanted to keep things short (hah) so I will end it here, but not before I recommend…
Would it be so bad if I recommended my own fic, Gray Guardian?
It’s an AU focused on Force Ghost! (ish. You’ll see) Asajj Ventress, basically being young Jedi Initiate Ben Solo’s Guardian Angel. Jedi Master/Uncle Luke’s there too, along with a lot of Anakin (father and son feels), and Obi-Wan (he gets lots of brotherly feels with Anakin too and a lot of feels in general), with guest stars Yoda and Qui-Gon. It features a bestest frenemies forevership with Asajj and Obi-Wan, and a Reylo Endgame.
Please let me know if you read any of these and your thoughts about them, and please don’t hesitate to ask me for more fic recs, or more questions from that ask page!
If any of the links don’t work, just let me know, and I’ll fix them!
God bless you, and stay safe and healthy!

FURKAN ANDIÇ BEMAN APRIL ISSUE INTERVIEW TRANSLATION
INTELLECTUAL AND HANDSOME: FURKAN ANDIÇ
A heartwarming smile, a gorgeous physique, confident footsteps and a handsome man who looks very good on screen. Furkan continues his acting career in Star TV’s “Kardeş Çocukları” this season. He invests in himself, reads a lot, takes courses abroad. He prepares to write his own scripts and stories. It’s very clear that he has discovered the secret of being a long-lasting and successful actor.  Tender, sweet, easy-going, smart, hard-working and very polite. He was born to be an actor, that’s for sure. He says that his new motto is “the world is your reflection”, that’s what he is, a very special man with all of his characteristics that he reflects.
Amongst the places you have already seen and not seen yet, where do you feel like you belong?
I’m not brave enough to say “I belong there” about somewhere that I haven’t seen, to tell you the truth. Because the energy and atmosphere of a place is very important for me. I can’t make such an assertive statement even about the places that I’ve seen. Traveling and experiencing new things is a very enjoyable passion of mine. This is why I can’t think of a life in which I’m tied to somewhere. Like everyone else, I have very different experiences wherever I go. But this isn’t enough to want to live my entire life there.
How many cat buddies do you have in your house? How did you decide to share your house with them?
I have a cat living with me. Her name is Zilli, a tabby cat. She’s over 3 years old. We took her from the street. Now that I think about it, I can’t imagine a life without her sharing the same house with me.
How do you describe your style? Do you feel better in a suit, or in your daily casual clothes?
Wearing comfortable clothes definitely makes me feel good. And when I wear a suit, I think I feel a little special. This was a confession...:)
Do you usually act with your logic or with your feelings?
It depends. My logic can always convince me. But it’s sometimes insufficient to take action. You and I may agree on something now. But I’m sure we feel differently about it. This makes feelings very special. Sometimes a moment comes, I convince my logic only to follow my feelings.
Is there a quote from a book that you haven’t forgotten and has become your life philosophy?
The world is your reflection, from “The School for Gods”.
Are you a night person?
When I think about the night people, I can say that I’m not. I love sitting through the night though.  Silence makes a person feel special.
Do you want to open up to the world? What are your initiatives on this?
I would love to. I was in America last summer. It was a fun, long and productive time where I took both language courses and acting lessons. When I was there, I had the opportunity to see really different perspectives. And this guides me in my effort to draw a path for myself. I contact with an agency in America and I still get in touch with my instructors. But something tells me that this can only happen with individual hard work and productivity. I’m very excited about how it will turn out, too.
What kind of compliments do you get, do you get criticisms too?
For me, criticism is just as valuable as compliment in our profession. Because, at the end of the day, we perform as a team and present our work to the viewers. It’s always up to them to like it or not. Whether it’s a compliment or criticism, we should always be able to say our opinions freely. But when we do both, we must avoid using humiliating or insulting expressions. Only in this way can we protect the freedom of speech. And humor, I’m always all for it.
Do you have an accessory that you never take off?
I change (my accessories) from time to time but I can count ring and necklace as accessories I wear all the time. I use the pieces that I lovingly buy or that I receive as a special gift for a long time. But I don’t like the idea of infinite attachment to an object. Also, because I’m a forgetful guy I can sometimes lose my accessories.
Our motto is “BeStylish”. What’s yours?
The world is your reflection.
You started your career with Kolej Günlüğü in 2011 and continue today with Volkan of Kardeş Çocukları. Which one of your characters that you played throughout all these years left the biggest impact on you? Which one of them had more in common with Furkan?
I think the character Sinan of the series Tatlı İntikam left the biggest impact on me. I experienced 3 different transformations of the character, whether physically, psychologically or emotionally, throughout the series. This is why I think I had a stronger  connection with him than all of my other characters. I can also say that, emotionally, he had the most in common with me.
You are acting with a strong cast in the series “Kardeş Çocukları”, how do you feel about it?
It’s something very valuable and reassuring for an actor. Personally, I believe that a good project is always the product of a good team. And good teams are made up of people who are good at their job and have working discipline. The cast of Kardeş Çocukları is, in my opinion, a cast who can reflect this effort on the screen. We are in a constant emotional exchange with people in our lives. We learn the most from people around us and add something to ourselves. It’s the same on this set too. It’s a cast who proved themselves in their previous works but are trying to add something new to themselves in every project.
Comedy, drama, love, thriller… You are an actor of which genre? Which do you feel the closest to?
I don’t lean towards the idea that an actor should limit himself with one genre. So I don’t have a claim like “I’m the actor of this or that genre”. I have been in comedy, romance and drama. But my mind is always on the roles that I haven’t played yet. I can describe this as a dissatisfaction or greed that I have. I believe that people, especially my fellow actors, are never happy to be limited with one genre. All of us, one moment or another, think that we repeat ourselves because of the conditions of life. To tell you honestly, when I watch my fellow actors who are in this repetitive situation, I can see it in their eyes. They want difference, they want more. It’s our most natural motive and right in this profession. And for achieving that, we always have to work harder and be more flexible in our projects. That’s how we can have diversity. And feeling close to a genre is another subject. I think I personally feel close to the romance genre. Love can give birth to great conflicts when it enters one’s life, and this can create more than one emotions in the character.
How good are you at music? Do you sing? If I asked you to make a playlist with three songs…
Music is a must-have in my life. And singing, it’s a whole different issue. It’s one of the areas I want to improve myself in and, as I mentioned earlier, push my limits and be more flexible. I’m taking singing lessons for this. I’m interested in playing piano and saxophone. But it doesn’t mean I can go out there and sing. And about music, I’m trying to keep my range as wide as possible. For example, I listen to classical music when I drive in İstanbul traffic, and Turkish songs on long trips. I turn on jazz while I’m having breakfast at home, and electronic music at nights. Now who would trust my playlist…?
What will be your next goals as an actor?
My biggest goal is to have my script on the screen. But I know it isn’t easy to reach that level. I’ve set short-term and medium-term goals on my way to this big goal. I’m working on achieving these goals one by one.
What attracts you the most in the opposite sex? As a cliché about tall men, do you also like short women?
I have never had a standard type like that. But I can say that smile is what attracts me the most.
We know you are good at physical exercise. How do you keep yourself motivated all the time? How do you readapt yourself when you are reluctant?
Yes, exercise has been a part of my life since I was a child. This is exactly why I can maintain my motivation. Of course, there are times when I feel reluctant. I sometimes procrastinate it. Or I have work to do, so I can’t go. Like everyone else, I dissuade myself in a second and don’t go to the gym. But this shouldn’t be an end. It’s a part of life like eating and sometimes you may not have the appetite. It’s that simple. There’s always the next day and the next meal. I’ve never worked out to have a perfect body. Focusing on the result scares people off the process. But, as in everything else, the whole fun is in the journey, not in the destination. It’s actually like life, we know how we will end up. But this doesn’t let us stop struggling for life.
How do you use social media? Are you a person who posts a lot, follows a lot, or stays away from it as much  as possible?
Hmm, I think I’m a follower. Posting a lot is a lifestyle, I’m always surprised at people who can do it. I can’t imagine myself taking the phone as soon as I wake up and post a “good morning” story. I feel like “how is this useful for the people?” But it’s actually not like that. People may be curious and such posts may make them happy. I’m very convinced about this. Sometimes, I post a few photos one after another when I feel like it, and actually receive good comments. But I think it’s not my thing.
Is there anything in your life that you want to change but keep delaying it? When do you consider putting it into action?
I want to say I’m waiting for the right time, rather than delaying it. I have started to set medium-term goals for them. I hope I can achieve them one by one. For example, I’ve started taking saxophone lessons. It was a curiosity that I had been delaying, sorry waiting for the right time, for a long time. Other than that, I’m working on a mini-series script. But I’m not satisfied with where I am now. I need to work harder on it. While shooting a TV series, it can be really difficult to manage my time. I’m improving myself to manage it right.

Hey guys! Today is World Theatre Day. I think it’s a great holiday. Theatre will always be on a special place in my heart. At school I attended theatre classes and we did a lot of performances for local events. I’m not doing it anymore but I will always remebmer this feeling when you’re on stage, when you’re someone else, but still your soul is kinda naked. Theatre is an amazing thing. It’s a place where magic happens here and now, unlike movies where you can make several takes of one scene until it turn out perfect. It’s a place where the actors share their energy, emotions, their soul with the audience. It always gives me such incredible vibes I cannot quite describe. Theatre is AMAZING! And the actors who work on stage do an amazing job.
Today I would like to present you a small series of posts introducing Sam Rockwell on theatre stage. I don’t know how you feel about these pictures, but as for me - I sense some kind of magic even in them. Hope you enjoy too.
(I apologize for a lot of text - I didn’t plan it, but it was pretty interesting to read about these plays and I honestly would love to see them on stage)
Sam Rockwell on theatre stage - Part 1:
The Hot l Baltimore (2000), directed by Joe Mantello
A play by Lanford Wilson set in the lobby of a dilapidated old hotel, from which the “e” in the hotel sign is missing - hence the name, Hot L Baltimore.
The play is comprised of a series of conversations between the residents of the hotel, who are contemplating an uncertain future after the hotel is condemned and scheduled for demolition. (c) encyclopedia.com

The Zoo Story (2001)
A one-act play by American playwright Edward Albee. The play explores themes of isolation, loneliness, miscommunication as anathematization, social disparity and dehumanization in a materialistic world.
This play concerns two characters, Peter and Jerry, who meet on a park bench in New York City's Central Park. Peter is a wealthy publishing executive with a wife, two daughters, two cats, and two parakeets. Jerry is an isolated and disheartened man, desperate to have a meaningful conversation with another human being. He intrudes on Peter’s peaceful state by interrogating him and forcing him to listen to stories about his life and the reason behind his visit to the zoo. The action is linear, unfolding in front of the audience in “real time”. The elements of ironic humor and unrelenting dramatic suspense are brought to a climax when Jerry brings his victim down to his own savage level. (c) Wikipedia

The Dumb Waiter (2001)
A one-act play by Harold Pinter written in 1957.
Two hit-men, Ben and Gus, are waiting in a basement room for their assignment. As the play begins, Ben, the senior member of the team, is reading a newspaper, and Gus, the junior member, is tying his shoes. Gus asks Ben many questions as he gets ready for their job and tries to make tea. Ben continues reading his paper for most of the time, occasionally reading excerpts of it to Gus. Ben gets increasingly animated, and Gus's questions become more pointed, at times nearly nonsensical.
In the back of the room is a dumbwaiter, which delivers occasional food orders. This is mysterious and both characters seem to be puzzled why these orders keep coming; the basement is clearly not outfitted as a restaurant kitchen. At one point they send up some snack food that Gus had brought along. Ben has to explain to the people above via the dumbwaiter's "speaking tube" that there is no food.
Gus leaves the room to get a drink of water in the bathroom, and the dumbwaiter's speaking tube whistles (a sign that there is a person on the other end who wishes to communicate). Ben listens carefully - we gather from his replies that their victim has arrived and is on his way to the room. Ben shouts for Gus, who is still out of the room. The door that the target is supposed to enter from flies open, Ben rounds on it with his gun, and Gus enters, stripped of his jacket, waistcoat, tie and gun. There is a long silence as the two stare at each other before the curtain comes down.
Although the play is realistic in many ways, particularly the dialogue between Ben and Gus, there are also elements that are unexplained and seemingly absurd, particularly the messages delivered by the dumb waiter itself. Pinter is notable for leaving the plays open to interpretation, "wanting his audience to complete his plays, to resolve in their own ways these irresolvable matters". The Last Days of Judas Iscariot (2005), directed by Philip Seymour Hoffman
A play by American playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis.
The Last Days of Judas Iscariot tells the story of a court case over the ultimate fate of Judas Iscariot. The play uses flashbacks to an imagined childhood, and lawyers who call for the testimonies of such witnesses as Mother Teresa, Caiaphas, Saint Monica, Sigmund Freud, and Satan. (c) Wikipedia
Judas was the disciple of Jesus who betrayed his friend and teacher to the authorities. He is seen as the man responsible for Jesus’s death; afterwards, Judas fell into despair and hung himself from an olive tree; since then, he has been suffering for his deeds deep in Hell, and will continue to do so for all eternity. Is that really fair? Was Judas the duplicitous master of his own fate, a much-suffering pawn used for Jesus’s ends, or just a man who made a mistake? Set in a courtroom in Purgatory, The Last Days puts Judas’ case to a hilarious, riotous, piercing trial, the results of which are sure to make the inhabitants of Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory - and the audience - reconsider what each thought they knew about forgiveness, faith, and the human inside one of the history’s most infamous figures. A Behanding in Spokane (2010), directed by John Crowley
A black comedy by award-winning Irish playwright Martin McDonagh. This is his first play set in the United States.
Set in a rundown hotel room somewhere in small-town America, it depicts the fateful encounter among four disaffected losers: the one-handed Carmichael, who has spent the past 47 years trying to retrieve the appendage that a bunch of "hillbilly bastards" forcefully removed when he was a teenager; Toby, a low-level scam artist; Marilyn, his white-trash girlfriend; and Mervyn, a truly creepy hotel "receptionist" who takes an inordinate interest in his guests' comings and goings. Toby and Marilyn have made the mistake of attempting to con Carmichael with the claim that they're in possession of his errant hand. Upon inspection, it turns out to be not of the Caucasian variety, resulting in his holding them at gunpoint. When they claim that they really do have his hand back in their garage, he runs off to retrieve it, but not before handcuffing them to the radiator and setting a lit candle above an open can of gasoline.
When Mervyn subsequently stops by the room, he's not particularly interested in helping the couple escape, despite his obvious romantic interest in Marilyn. It turns out he's still pissed off at Toby, whom he recognizes as the drug dealer who ripped him off years earlier. (c) hollywoodreporter.com
The play was nominated for the 2010 Drama League Award, Distinguished Production of a Play.

A Streetcar Named Desire (2011)
A play written by Tennessee Williams.
The play dramatises the life of Blanche DuBois, a southern belle who, after encountering a series of personal losses, leaves her aristocratic background seeking refuge with her sister and brother-in-law in a dilapidated New Orleans tenement.
A Streetcar Named Desire is Williams' most popular play, is considered among the finest plays of the 20th century, and is considered by many to be Williams' greatest work. It still ranks among his most performed plays, and has inspired many adaptations in other forms. (c) Wikipedia

FLASHBack: Week 33 [First Class FLASHBack] - Weird Al’s Official Flash Animated Music Videos
Thomas Lee, who had made the video for the Star Wars Gangsta Rap, discussed in last week's FLASHBack, was asked to make a video for I'll Sue You, Al's "Style Parody" of Rage Against The Machine.
David Lovelace, the mind behind the Newgrounds series, Retarded Animal Babies, was tapped by Al to make Virus Alert, which was another style parody, this one of the band The Sparks (who regular FLASHBack readers may recall had a keyboardist, Ron Mael, who was the direct inspiration for the look of Roscoe Thunderpants from the Flash-only band Savlonic).
Ren & Stimpy creator and general garbage human being John Kricfalusi was brought in to animate Close But No Cigar, his first time animating in Flash. As with the others this one doesn't parody any specific song, but is instead Al's style parody of the band Cake.
Digital Entertainment company JibJab was hired to apply their animated photocollage style of Flash to Al's Do I Creep You Out?, which finally is an actual direct song parody, in this case of Taylor Hicks' "Do I Make You Proud?".
Doug Bressler, from Doogtoons, made the video for Al's 11 minute epic Trapped in the Drive-Thru. This too, is a song parody, of the even more epic 33 Chapter Rap Opera "Trapped in the Closet" by R. Kelly. There are diagrams. Al's version is simpler at only 3 chapters long but he did get to have his own fun with it. Years earlier he had approached Led Zeppelin about doing a polka medley of their songs for his movie UHF. Jimmy Page declined at the time, but when Al asked him if he could use a sample a few seconds of their song Black Dog to use in this song, Page again said no to the sampling, but did give them the green light for Al's own band to re-record a few seconds of the song's instrumentals. Al's band did such a good job, that many just assume that it was a sample.
Yankovic kept up the practice for his 2011 release Alpocalypse, but this time around the Flash artists he engaged were the kind who were drawing regular paychecks from their work in the medium.
The video for Skipper Dan, a style parody of the band Weezer, and based on DisneyLand & Disneyworld's Magic Kingdom's Jungle Cruise Ride was by Divya Srinivasan who had previously done music videos in Flash for They Might Be Giants, as well as Flash trailers childrens' books she's self authored and illustrated.
The video for CNR, a style parody of The White Stripes, and celebrating comedian and Hollywood Squares fixture Charles Nelson Reilly, was another JibJab collaboration.
The video for Ringtone, Al's style parody of Queen was animated by the Flash artists responsible for SuperNews! on Current TV.
The video for Whatever You Like, a song parody of the T.I. song of the same name, was done for Al in Flash by Cris Shapan, Lead Artist on Cartoon Network Adult Swim's Tom Goes to the Mayor, Art Director on Season 1 of the Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!, and motion graphics designer from seasons 2 & 3 of Yo Gabba Gabba!
The video for Party in the CIA, a parody of Miley Cyrus's "Party in the U.S.A.", was animated by Ghostbot Inc. the same company that had also used Adobe Flash to create the Erin Esurance ad campaign, a campaign which ultimately had to be pulled when Rule 34 of Erin outstripped search hits for the actual company being advertised by a wide margin.
The video for Another Tattoo, Al's spoof of B.o.B.'s "Nothin' on You", was by Augenblick Studios, who had previously worked on Shorties Watchin' Shorties, Wonder Showzen, Superjail!, Ugly Americans, and the occasional short animation for Yo Gabba Gabba!
The video for If That Isn't Love, a style parody of Hanson, was from Flash animator Brian Frisk of FrownHouse, who had also done segments for Comedy Central's Triptank.
The video for Stop Forwarding That Crap to Me is kinetic typography from Dutch graphic artist Koos Dekker, who unlike the others on this list I can't actually find anything that confirms that this one was actually done in Flash. But I'm throwing it in, just in case (I did read somewhere where someone had guessed that it had been done in Adobe After Effects, so that's gotta count for something.) This song is Yankovic's love letter to producer & songwriter Jim Steinman. Steinman, a long time collaborator with Meat Loaf (and who Meat Loaf describes as "one weird dude") has an immediately recognizable sound even if he's not a household name. He primarily is the songwriter for Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell and Bat Of Hell II, but he also wrote Air Supply's "Making Love Out of Nothing at All", Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart" & "Holding Out For A Hero" and Celine Dion's "It's All Coming Back To Me Now". His musical stylings are ripe for parody, and Al hits it out of the park with this one.
That's it for this week. Next week, something simple. Maybe some stick figures that aren't from Madness Combat.

Inside No. 9 Series 6 Episode 1 Review: Wuthering Heist
https://ift.tt/2T7puxi
This Inside No. 9 review contains spoilers.
There’s old school comedy of the ‘Frank Spencer roller-skating under a lorry’ kind, and then there’s old school comedy of the ‘clowns, dukes, ruffs and rhyming couplets’ variety. The Inside No. 9 series six opener draws on the latter, improbably combining 16th century commedia dell’arte with a modern-day jewel heist. It’s proof, if any were needed, that there really is no formula to this show. Peculiarity is its only genre.
Commedia dell’arte sounds complicated because it’s Italian, but so does bruschetta, and that’s just tomato on toast. The term describes a form of historical theatre using a group of stock characters wearing masks and doing gags around a familiar plot. (You know how, in whatever decade you watch Neighbours, there’s always a bad boy and a busybody and a Karl Kennedy; it’s the same in commedia dell’arte but with the servant, the harlequin, the doctor, the captain, the lovers and so on.)
‘Wuthering Heist’ explains its conceit early on with a self-aware to-camera monologue by Columbina, a servant played by the always-great Gemma Whelan (Game of Thrones, Upstart Crow). She tells us the reason for combining Italian Renaissance theatre with a crime caper is because they both use masks, “which is quite clever in a way, but still sounds like something a drama teacher would have a wank to. But hey, it’s series six, you’ve got to allow for a certain artistic exhaustion.”
Critics pre-empted, the thing gets underway. This time, the number nine is a (Covid-safe) warehouse where a criminal gang plans, and then suffers the fallout of, a diamond heist. The stock characters are Arlecchino (Kevin Bishop), Columbina (Gemma Whelan), The Doctor (Steve Pemberton), The Captain (Reece Shearsmith), Pantalone (Paterson Joseph) and Mario and Hortensia, a modern twist on the lovers (Dino Kelly and Rosa Robson).

Behind the Scenes on Inside No. 9’s Most Terrifying Episode

Inside No. 9 Renewed for Series 6 and 7
By Louisa Mellor
What follows is an audacious mix of the rarefied and the extremely silly. There are beautifully presented bits of pantomime from director Guillem Morales, such as the montage’s glittery slow-motion explosion. And there are jokes so broad they’d never fit through the door of an ordinary Inside No. 9 episode (a misnomer really; there’s no such thing). Start to finish, it’s a gag-fest, with the open door policy on puns that its title suggests. The half-hour goes full pelt, leaping from stylised gangster slo-mo to slapstick pratfalls, with practically every line filled by innuendo and set-up/punchline one/two jabs.
Following tradition, almost everybody wears a mask, which adds to the WTF-ness. The masks don’t lose us any emotional connection to the characters because this isn’t a primarily emotional story. When most of them are killed after a Reservoir Dogs-style Mexican standoff, there are no tears to shed. Many of Inside No. 9’s instalments could serve as pilot episodes for entirely new series, but not this one. It’s a one-off explosion, not a sizzling fuse.
That said, Kevin Bishop managed to emote at Colly’s death even through his mask, and ultimately, it felt right and neat that Arlo (a stock fool rather than a crafty Harlequin) ended up with the loot. His surreal exit in the company of an acrobatic doppelganger echo left things on a note of pleasing weirdness.
The real appeal of the episode is the unalloyed lark of it all. As ever with Inside No. 9, just ask yourself where else on TV you could see anything quite like it. From the moment Reece Shearsmith enters, with his Dolmio ad Italian accent, military heel-clicks and lines rhyming ‘Hortensia’ with ‘dementia’, you’d need a hard heart not to be won over. Within that density of gags, there must be something for everyone. The Genoa, Chicago, Alaska, Trinidad and Tobago sequence was for me, and who knows, perhaps somewhere, there’s even a fan for the beef ‘rap’.
If anything, it could have stood to be even more unapologetic. The fourth wall-breaking asides to camera that deliberately yawned at both its arty-fartiness and juvenility perhaps pandered unnecessarily to potential criticism. [“I bet you’re loving this on the Cook’d and Bomb’d forum aren’t you?”] If you’re doing brio, do brio. Have your cake, eat it, make a lot of knob jokes about it, and don’t apologise for a single crumb.

Inside No. 9 continues on Monday the 17th of May at 9.30pm on BBC Two.

How well do you know your best friend?
Original post here. Answer these questions about your bff, your tumblr bff, or just anyone you want to show a lot of appreciation on here to!!!!
I was tagged by @chiruchill and will answer the questions about her (and tagging her back!!!). Tagging @shulkie @milleandra-nebula @crying-abt-fictional-people , uh chiru also tagged @glassesgirl0401 and @gray-x-natsus-matching-hip-scars  but it didn’t seem to work? idk guys feel free to spread the love but also feel free to ignore!!! (I HIGHLY recommend getting the questions from the original post, I rambled for MILES in every single question you don’t wanna read the below trust me)
1. What is your best friend’s dream job, and why? Man, idk that you’ve ever blabbed about something specific, like I know you’d love to run a café with me, or a library with your mom, or any kind if small store like that... Obviously I know you were ready to invest a lot of time and effort into teaching too... Any job that would give you enough time and self management to allow you to spend time with your dogs really ahaha
2. What is their biggest pet peeve, and why do you think that is? The main one is people being 1)  messy and 2) loud. A few weeks ago I would have just said “well you’re considerate and wish they could be too”, but I said I’d be brutally honest about this and girl... I read something a little while ago and I am genuinely worried your hyperawareness of everyone around you stems from something more specific, but we can talk about it whenever
3. What is their favourite TV series (live action)? LMAO GO AWAY I GET THE MESSAGE I will watch Arrested Development asap
4. What is their favourite TV series (animated)? Ahaha you’ve recommended a lot of quality comedies to me over the years, do you have an ultimate fave though? I know there was that group of school girls comedy gdi I watched it but forget the name >< welp
5. What does your best friend value most in life, and why? (Do you think they value most what they say they do, or something else?) Holy shit ok this goes right back to a thing the guys were talking about earlier. I’m gonna say your dogs, like you do say you do :p If we’re talking values in people/ ways of life... What the guys brought up was that you say you only want a simple life with just what we need, but... well, I guess we all know none of us have ANY idea what a minimal life is like, so I’d say what you mean by that is, you do value the life standard we currently have, where we never have to worry about a solid roof over our heads, food, and enough money left to support your pets. So yeah, my answer is 1) your dogs, and 2) the kinda life where we can support them x)
6. How would you describe their style, and how would they describe it? Colorful (but that’s how us French see all Scandinavians tbh), comfortable, like effortless but still cute? You’d probably agree it’s colorful but then say it’s not “stylish” though XD I think you just really like cute things but muuuuch prefer comfort first
7. If you were to decorate a room for your best friend, what would it look like, and why? !!!!! Aaahhh I’m a shit decorator with no taste, but I’d keep it minimal cause that’s how you feel best! A massive bed for you and your dogs, maybe nice tall lights you can reach from the bed but light the room well... A bookshelf... A pretty big desk... I’d want to add lots of plants and pillows, but idk if you’d want that clutter :/ Colors would be white beige and either pastel green or pastel pink.
8. What do you think their best quality is? You know how during a mario kart race you can see the names shuffle on the side as players cut in front or fall behind, that’s what your qualities are doing in my head now... You’re patient, so strong and independent (which I admire endlessly), generous, smart, but I guess what really sets you apart from me is your specific sense of humor and just wit in general??? idk how to explain, it’s not just that you make me laugh, it’s everything you say, I know only you would come up with that at that moment. It’s a big part of what makes me so excited when I’m around you, and a big part of why I miss you so badly when I’m not.
9. What does your best friend think their best quality is? Would they agree with you? Yee you think you’re funny and you’re right :p  Unless now you think your patience is your top quality given how much you’ve put up with lately
10. What is your best friend’s favourite book (or book series)? The Hobbit
11. What do you have in common with your best friend? LMAO our shitty sense of humor... Omg what else though :o we’re really different... maybe how difficult we are when it comes to really letting people in? idk please answer this one better than me
12. How did you meet, and what was your first impression of your best friend? First day of uni!!!! I was lost and confused, she had papers and was alone and therefore less intimidating, I asked her where she got the documents from... And once I got them, I think sheeee was the one to offer we sit next to each other while I was munching on my apple ahaha. I missed the next meeting, but after that she saw me at the bus stop, and offered to wait for the bus with me??? Kindest thing anyone had ever done for me at that point in my life, so yeah... How far we’ve come :’) Very first impression though... “she looks reasonable enough to talk to... Oh she’s nice... Yay she’s really nice!!!” ahaha
13. What does your best friend spend their free time doing, and why do you think they choose to do what they do? Reading, petting the dogs, watching stuff, gaming... It’s escapism isn’t it babe :’) Anything that’s relaxing and distracts you from whatever is happening irl
14. Who is their favourite fictional character, and why? Luigi cause he wears green lmao and cause he’s like the “second” brother and therefore deserves more love
15. What’s the first thing you tell other people when you talk about your best friend? “So Chiru - she’s my best friend and you’ll be hearing about her every day -” ACTUAL LINE SERVED TO ALL MY CO-WORKERS. And then I tend to say we lived together for 2 years, and that I miss you a lot
16. What’s your favourite story about them? Is there a single fave...How we met, how we came to do our groceries together and suddenly became unseparable, MY SURPRISE BDAY x2, coming to cheer for me at cheer, casually inviting me to your home, Nice (omg you reading Scandinavia and the world to me!!), our Japan travels, everything, right up to getting your last dog, is a highlight in my life
17. What’s your least favourite story about them? :))) fuck if I am telling that on here. Oh shit I said I’d be honest. Look... I think sometimes you forget I’m pretty insecure and basically any minor (or... you know... not so minor) event that makes me think maybe you’ll leave me behind after all is just like. uhm. “least favorite stories” is a mild way to explain how I feel about those times
18. Why do you think you two ended up becoming best friends? My dudes I wonder a lot. I know it’s so much more than just living together, if anything that makes most people hate each other. It’s shared values, willingness to make balanced efforts for each other, an endless stream of ideas for fun coming from both sides, similar interests... I don’t know, but Chiru I am just so grateful everyday I did find you
19. Would you be honest with your best friend if they were happy doing something, but you think it might end up harming them in the end? Ouch. Ok well... The truth is sometimes I doooo worry, but I’m so convinced you know what you’re doing so much better than I do, that no, I tend to trust whatever you say, if you’re convinced (/telling me you’re convinced) that what you’re doing isn’t harming you, I’ll believe you. At least, that’s what I tell myself... A part me of does worry, though, that I just don’t speak up because you’ll already have all the arguments ready and we’ll just unnecessarily argue about it, and I’ll end up hurt, and yes exactly it’s as bad as it sounds, I’m worried I wouldn’t want to fight you over your happiness in case it would result in hurt feelings. I’m a mess, this is terrible and I gotta work on that
20. Does your best friend play any instruments? Why do you think they chose that instrument? BISH SAYS SHE CAN SORTA PLAY THE GUITAR AND PIANO BUT HAS SHE PLAYED FOR ME YET, I THINK NOT. I am unappreciated, where is my serenade (jk jk, I realy doooo wanna hear you play though!!)
21. Do you and your best friend have a dream for the future, if so, what is it? Move in with me please it’s the one thing that keeps me going
22. What is one thing you have always wanted to tell your best friend, but never have? :)))) ((((: *digs through a million letter drafts and hell, fic drafts, we all know where my inspiration comes from anyway* Sigh... Well first of all I need you to know you’re the most beautiful and kind soul I have ever encountered. Please get that through your head. Secondly... I don’t think I’d have EVER brought this up, but that’s what the question is aiming for, isn’t it... You probably only held my hand in Barcelona because I was so black-out wasted you were worried I wouldn’t follow you home otherwise, but it made me sort of ridiculously happy, and I guess I wouldn’t mind if it happened again
23. What do you think your best friend’s life will be like 10 years from now? What I’m thinking or wishful thinking hah... Thinking, well... deep breath, you’ll be alright :) You’ll have a comfortable home somewhere you like, with a job that suits you. You’re too stubborn to settle for any less. Your dogs are with you, of course. And so is whoever will be lucky enough to be chosen by you. You can guess based on that what the wishful thinking is
24. What song makes you think of your best friend? IT’S 4:18 AM AND HONESTLY THERE ARE SO MANY TO CHOOSE FROM (anything from Just Dance tbh XD) BUT I CHOOSE THIS GEM (45:21) because fukkit it’s cold as heeeeck in my room right now and I’m only listening to this kind of music
25. Just to end on a mean note, what’s your best friend’s worst personality trait? (Be honest now, guys, none of that “they’re just too kind” bullshit) Worst? You wanna hear something crazy... Well you know I miss you, I always do and have been for so long now, but once I thought maybe if I listed everything that maybe weren’t the beeesst parts of your personality, and all the parts of my personality that probably annoyed you, I’d force myself to accept that maybe it’d be best for us to stop living together... And gdi I tried. But it’s just a really ridiculous list ... or at least it was, until that one night... Remember when one of my friends took my phone and texted you quite extensively, and that went really really badly? Well here’s the moment of truth: (hey it’s 4:25 now and I was out) I had broken down sobbing after you compared me to your dogs again :’) Look, sober me can rationally process your way of thinking. But... I guess deep down, we’re not the same, I want to be loved and appreciated like a human being. I’m genuinely sorry I couldn’t bring myself to tell you this sooner, idk what I was so scared of. So, uh, “worst” personality trait (which really isn’t one but)... omg I can’t even phrase this without turning it against myself ahaha, like it’s my own fault for telling you that everything was fine when it wasn’t. So look this isn’t even about your worst personality trait, I guess it’s me realizing I gotta stop lying about crap, and I hope you’ll be considerate and understanding like always :’)

Week Five: Big Data Review
Tumblr media
I like to think that the concept of innovative art only really reached its peak when the internet came along. I mean, there were people drawing on cave walls and writing with quill feathers and clattering on typewriters a little before that, but it was when the world wide web came to surface that the way we processed media truly changed. As a technology obsessed, sugar gargling millennial, I couldn’t possibly define myself today without a sweet, sweet machine able to give me immediate access to the art form of choice: podcasts.
But let’s, for one very terrifying minute, imagine what it would be like if the internet was plucked away and whatever phone, tablet, or laptop you were reading this from was obsolete. Hell, I’m entirely obsolete. Your collection of cat photos on Facebook, your favorite recipes on Pinterest, your favorite Let’s Play channels-just slipped out of your fingers because seven thieves with seven keys to the internet had something else in mind.
This is the general premise of Ryan Estrada’s first audio drama, the nine episode long Big Data. In this crime caper comedy, the entire world gets thrown into a frenzy when the ultimate source of information and privacy is taken away and we all get to know these thieves personally and decipher why they committed their crime before the internet is gone for good. Hilarity ensues.
Big Data is all around a show about the internet for the internet and has pretty big ambitions as an audio drama despite just how niche and personable the whole project feels. Despite it being the otherwise visual artist Ryan Estrada’s first real attempt at audio drama, at least as far as I’m concerned, Big Data has a certain level of polish that’s noticeable from a distance.
For starters, it’s presentation is pretty solid, namely due to the cast of talented voices working for it. Big Data has the kind of acting that sounds incredibly natural, making listening to it sound similar to peeping in on an actual conversation. This is especially helped by the use of everyday sound effects like buzzing phones and rustling clothes being played over silence that makes everything sound like a recording device was sneaked into someone’s bedroom.
A whole episode sometimes just feels like an uncut piece of improvisation, especially with the only occasional sound transition and long winded conversations taking place in every other moment. For this reason,  Big Data mostly consists of very long scenes that are based around roughly two to three characters at a time which is only a fraction of the absolute clusterfuck of people introduced through the series alone.
In terms of innovation, it’s readily apparent as to why I found Big Data to be the  crème de la crème for this month’s theme. Big Data is a weird show, bordering at the brink of absurdist at times. The show never goes full Serial Experiments Lain on us, though the concept is just complex enough for a lot of opportunities for creative and downright bizarre conflict. Not really in the abstract sense but more out of the sheer heights its dialogue is willing to peak to get a point across.
To its core, Big Data is a heist story that’s actually based off a real life practice created by something called ICANN. According to Estrada as well as an article by the Huffignton Post in 2014 and a more recent document earlier this year by ICANN itself, the seven keys to the internet holds a pivotal role over the internet. These are mostly measures for security, though Estrada seemed to do what most artists do and draw inspiration from some of the more strange practices of the real world for his own project.
And it doesn’t stop there. There’s also mentions of other real life concepts thrown into the mix, including such things as cyber police, relay calls, and  photocopier black boxes that are creatively woven into an otherwise fictional story. Estrada takes the “reality is stranger than fiction” route to heart here which is a road less traveled for many audio drama creators and what he does with these ideas makes for some very one of a kind scenarios.
Big Data could be best described as...big. Everything about it seems to take up space from its thirty minute run time for episodes to its long scenes of dialogue to its combination of varying issues that are embedded into each element of the story from hacking to journalism to media consumption.
Even the setting itself seems to reside somewhere in the middle of other preexisting audio drama, the second episode including in-character commentary from the likes of Greater Boston and Welcome to Night Vale, to name a few.
I don’t know if there’s a widespread podcast multiverse theory that exists anywhere, but a helpful dose of that opening scene and that one mini episode with The Bright Sessions and Ars Paradoxica around the same time never fails to get me grinning. And if Big Data is the center of it all as the result of some sort of combination of the hadron rift and whatever drugs The Meat Blockade universe is on, I would not be that hard pressed to believe it.
Big Data may just be too much of a puzzle for people looking for something a little more straight forward. With a lot of characters to follow who have varying goals and personality quirks to keep up with as well as the broad premise at stake here, Big Data, as the name implies, can be a lot to process in one sitting. And with the long, single takes making up the majority of episodes, there’s a lot of time spent peddling around dialogue that may or may not be relevant or getting any sort of real point across.
Big Data tends to mistake swearing for humor if it doesn’t mistake long and awkward arguments for humor. And there’s at lest one per episode moment where one wonders how many minutes are left of a heated conversation before it wraps up. Not that it doesn’t have its clever and witty moments, though they’re often weighed down by scenes that don’t quite lay out the jokes as quickly as they could.
If the abstract necessity of the internet and an aesthetic that borrows from educational nerdy shows-think the PBS Idea Channel and Wisecrack and the like-is too weird a combination to your liking then the show probably won’t appeal to you in any personal or artistic way. It’s a look and feel that’s very genuine and unique and not a vibe I regularly get from audio dramas that are almost always variations of horror or sci-fi with some type of new scripted comedy every blue moon.
For that reason alone, Big Data is quite the novelty if you’re looking for a slightly more grounded comedic setting that is still rife with drama and action and I personally don’t think there are a enough of those that aren’t just improvisation groups.
In the end of the day, Big Data is a lot like an old and cluttered computer jam-packed with family photos, bookmarked news stories, student films, and whatever software it needs to run an indie game for you-lovingly constructed and planned out though often times messy with a tendency to lag.
It feels like its biting more than it can chew at times and there’s often moments where it seems like things are all being cobbled together more on a desktop than a folder, but it’s all done out of sheer sentimentality and a true love for both audio drama, the internet, and the wackiness of real life manipulated into something very grand and exciting.
Big Data is adventurous and able to take some risks with its kitchen sink of ideas that make for a fast paced and fun exploration riddled with some pretty memorable hi-jinks and characters you grow to like pretty quickly. Even if the taste itself was pretty small with only nine episodes to take in, if you don’t include mini episodes, it was at least as big a punch as Big Data should be.

17776 and Pokemon SM?
fandom comparison
satellites and beasts and space, oh my!
better protagonist: 17776, on account of actually Having a protagonist! (I thiiiink I remember reading somewhere that Lillie is the real protagonist/main character of SM since even with you being the Designated Player Character you’re arguably more of a supporting pal to her journey than vice versa? unfortunately I forget where I read that though >:T)
better villain: Pokemon SM, on account of actually Having a villain. I guess? is humanity its own enemy in 17776? is it the football that smashes the eternal lightbulb?? hubris???? who knows, not me, but Lusamine’s a fantastic antagonist in her own right.
better plot: if by “plot” we mean “a traditional storytelling standard,” SM for the same ol’ It Actually Exists reasoning. arguably 17776 could be shoehorned into a three-act mold, albeit with very low stakes and an unclear antagonist, but I still didn’t have much of a clue where the story was going much less what the story was until… actually, no, I still probably couldn’t describe it in a nutshell other than “satellites discuss philosophical questions with the finesse of any given homestuck page and watch Americans in the far future play sportsball.”
that said, 17776 is pretty dang coherent and attention-grabbing. and as an inherently self-contained story it does a nice job of tying up loose ends, even if said loose ends are a string of common questions that are answered with the grace of a sledgehammer near the very end - much as I would love to read the trio’s commentary for ages, it feels complete. I can’t say the same for SM and its ultra beast sequelbait wormhole shenanigans.
better cinematography technical handling or however you wanna retitle this: a video game with a perpetual 8)-faced protagonist and occasional 3d cutscenes vs text and scattered pictures/gifs in a void with some videos, hmm. I’m gonna have to pick 17776 on this because for a pioneer of the experimental webcomic format it fits the story damn well. unless people give up on all those dang calendars, it does a fantastic job with storytelling considering it’s more or less words in a void, both format-wise and literally in context.
but since I have the chance to soapbox about pokemon a bit which is an opportunity I will always take without question: damn, those cutscenes did not do it justice. scenes like Lusamine’s “death” really, really, really needed something that wasn’t essentially a block with a flat hand texture slapped on to carry the scene’s weight. you know all those memes about the protag being all 8D no matter what happens? or that one moment in XY where Lysandre’s crying over “Pokemon…” and your rival has a bland >:O/D:
more fun: you know what? you know fucking what you’d think pokemon would win here being a video game and all, but I think I’d actually have to pick 17776 overall. Pokemon SM is… pokemon, main series game, you grind you beat people you cry forever about the abysmal postgame grinding. it was definitely a step up from previous games in terms of jazzing up the gym challenge formula and other tweaks, but I’ve honestly barely touched it since beating the postgame.
17776, meanwhile, has some great reread potential (I say, implying I have actually reread it, which I haven’t,,) being self-contained and all, and much like Homestuck there’s scarcely a dull moment. a few ????? moments if you’re not familiar with football jargon, but overall a great time.
…I mean, you could argue it’s not fair to fault SM for its post-postgame which is gonna be uneventful by default, but 17776 still has the advantage of a novel format. :V
more thought-provoking: 17776 by a long shot! philosophy and an intriguing new take on an immortal future for humanity that doesn’t involve Evil Robots™, what more could ya want. Pokemon SM plays with some neat themes that I appreciate and as always there’s tons of room for headcanon, but ultimately in terms of Thought Provocation, what you put into a pokemon game is what you get. 17776 presents both worldbuilding conundrums that it answers as it goes along and general hypotheticals that people could stew over for thousands of lifetimes. Pokemon SM says “oh shit we’re stepping up our subtext character development game this time! and for all that stuff you were hoping we’d follow up on, don’t forget to buy the canon AU follow-up games!”
…I’m not bitter about the ultra games, no sarcasm. SM is definitely not as big of a “YOU TRIED BUT YOU FAILED.jpeg” as, say, XY. I’m not mad. but I’m still disappointed. >:V
more relaxing: Pokemon SM, mostly because again my idea of relaxation usually involves video games. (I don’t tend to reread/rewatch/etc. media in general, come to think of it. huh.) beating people up in a mall and throwing beans on the beach is good mindless fun, at least until you’ve done all your daily shit and then you play tetris for five hours instead.
more consuming: pokemon wins again, but this might be because 17776 had an update schedule whereas once you buy a pokemon game you got it all. unless I get stuck at some mandatory checkpoint, when I pick up a game I ain’t putting it down til I’m done. 17776 didn’t eat up my entire week, if only because there wasn’t enough content to actually do that when I was reading, although it does get points for being one of few stories with staggered updates I’ve actually stayed more or less up-to-date with.
favorite: okay but what if there were satellites in ULTRA space and they made snarky commentary at the passing creatures, reflecting casually on how each and every beast would eventually be deemed a pokemon upon entry into That One ‘Verse (or, uh, series of universes?) as if humans, pokemon, and non-sentient plants are the only living things on the entire planet that those humans know about/would ever consider the existence of

It’s been years since the Gundams existed, yet he still manages to find himself in the clasp of those metallic prongs. The scientist has always been lethal, he knew that better than anyone. But how much did they know about the good doctor? More importantly how did they manage to involve Relena? He could never bring himself to kill her, the old man might not be so lucky.

Heero Sandwich (Ch. 7) https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12594063/7/Heero-Sandwich
Nobody asked for this, especially not Heero Yuy, but here we are all the same.

This is the seventh story in Navigation, a fem!Heero series.
I noted this in the tags, but I just want to say again that there are a couple of sexist slurs in this interlude, and I don't want anyone to be caught off-guard. Read safely!

Darkside Tales http://archiveofourown.org/works/11910963/chapters/26913267
A Preventer has caught a thief. How banal. Having a straight poker like Chang Wufei chain him up and hang him from the ceiling is a tiny bit on the left side of banal, but still within spitting distance, Duo judges. Nothing to see here, folks, keep walking.
But on the darkside of this tale, like a cracked photographic plate, monsters of the mind are revealed.

Where I Belong (Ch. 21) http://archiveofourown.org/works/10691187/chapters/27012999
In the year AC 205 the status of the Earth-Sphere remains relatively peaceful thanks to the efforts of the ESUN and it’s peacekeeping organization Preventer. The five young men who had once fought together for this peace now work quietly behind the scenes to maintain it. Despite their new roles in this world, Heero and Trowa struggle to establish a comfortable place in it. In the process of finding themselves they eventually realize that their place is with each other.
Something About Us (Ch. 20) http://archiveofourown.org/works/11333262/chapters/27012636
Five Years after Operation Meteor the fragile peace between Earth and the colonies is once again threatened when a beloved prominent political figure is assassinated. The former Gundam pilots come together again for a new mission, which forces unexplored feelings to arise between Heero and Trowa.
Zodiac Black (Ch. 2) http://archiveofourown.org/works/11947887/chapters/27012120
Set several years in the future, Heero and his seasoned crew are on a mission to transport passengers from Earth to a colony planet. Under the guidance of new management, the crew has to cope with the inconvenient changes that disrupt their lives on the ship. Heero, captain of the Zodiac Black, faces off with a longtime rival who threatens his control. Will the crew successfully complete their mission despite the chaos that ensues? Or will something go terribly wrong, forcing them to abandon their journey?

For the month of October, we can post everything and anything pertaining to fan OCs in Gundam Wing with weekly themes and perhaps a featured OC every other day or so. This includes fic, snippets, art, OC profiles, headcanons, ships, discussions, and anything you have as long as it’s about an OC. Even if this OC of yours is still in the mulling-stages, we want to hear about it! Let’s embrace OCs and celebrate our collective awesomeness.
