"the x-men films' characterization of young charles and erik is nothing like the comics' characterization of young charles and erik" shocking that a reinterpretation of two characters that gives them significantly different backstories and focuses on them at significantly different times in their lives would also have characterization significantly different from select comics written decades beforehand

its almost like it's not a one-to-one adaptation of any of the source material and takes place in an entirely different universe.

comparing xmfc/cu with 616 without that in the forefront of your mind is like refusing to acknowledge that xmen evolution is a highschool AU when comparing its characterization to the 616 versions. "scott doesn't act like that" maybe it's because he's 16 and not a 30 year old parasoldier.

which is to say: "erik doesn't act like that" maybe that's because he is years younger and hadn't even met magda yet, much less raised (and mourned) a child...?

im loving all this nightcrawler stuff on my dash recently! does he have a comic of his own now, or is this a subplot of an xmen comic?

i'm still making my way through the uncanny x-men that started in 1963 that he appeared in (much, much later. he wasn't in the original line up)... he's also in excalibur (comics spinoff), and a few other cartoons and movies. he's a priest in at least 2, and religious in the movies to the point i get second hand embarrassment. However, my first impression of him when I was a kid was in X-Men Evolution, where he was just a cringey but sweet teenager, which is more accurate to his original comics-self but the cartoons and movies are separate from the comics so I'm really just going through the source of all this. No idea why this happened...Uncanny X-men has 100+ issues...Not to discourage anyone, but this is why I gave up on reading all of Daredevil in 2021...

I usually look up and follow a reading list whenever i want to get into a superhero. it makes things easier for me, especially if they've been around for 50 or more years.

Thank you very much!  You may be seeing more of it because I’m rewatching Evolution and remembering that I have a lot to say about it!

Regarding Xavier/Magneto...I dunno, my primary thought on the matter is that my life would be easier if I shipped it.  But I’m deeply committed to the tragic friendship, sorry.  They’re innately at odds over the issue of human lives (Magneto believes that they are disposable for the greater good, Xavier believes they are not), but they’re also deeply codependent, and that’s fascinating to me.

Also I’m too invested in the characterization of Magneto as someone who will always unintentionally destroy everyone he loves to really ship him with anyone, so.  Magneto/Deep Unshakeable Grief That He Tries To Cope With By Picking Up Recruits, Who He Then Treats Poorly Because He Doesn’t Know How To Handle Emotional Connection, is the only ship I am here for.

Magneto is a tragedy, I wrote a whole thing about it once.
