Honestly, I think people who don't have language issues / speech issues kinda assume that it is just learning words or making sentences that are the issue - and yeah! That can be part of it
But a lot of the time its a lot more complex than that because language is a lot more complex than that - it's just something that a lot of people with typically-developing language and speech skills take for granted because it comes naturally to them
I was thinking about a response I was trying to say to my fiance as a joke (verbally where we struggle a lot more than written) and had a very kind of funny in-hindsight language "glitch". I was going to use it as an example but I couldn't remember the exact contact and phrasing that made it made sense.
Everything from here is how my brain works and may not apply to all people with language / speech issues.
But often when speaking certain words cluster together into conceptual groupings and they together fall into general functions in sentence structure (adjective) (noun) or (action) (noun) or (pronoun) (noun) and they generate a specific concept and idea together that isn't always the same as when translated individually. Additionally, in my experience, chunks of phrases and semantically similar words (ie words that tend to frequently be used together) are easier to draw upon and tend to be pulled into my awareness / "speaking pool" better than individual words.
So "bite you" "bite me" and "bite that" are all actions of biting something in specific and they tend to register in a chunk and operate much like an independent word probably does to an individual without language / speech issues (I am assuming based on how my written language skills are because I usually have little impact on my writing ability)
Taking that into consideration of that with the fact that sometimes it is just hard to find the phrases I'm looking for and thus a common cheat sheet to getting around that is to use the phrasing of the other person if their words were 'close enough' to what I wanted to say, there are certain moments where something entirely different than what was MEANT to be said is actually spoken.
Again, I don't remember the exact details to make it make sense as an example with just the script but him and I were joking around. He made a joke that it is "his job to bite me" which is a play jab cause we bite him 5x more than the other way around. So I wanted to reply "Bitch no, it's MY job to bite YOU" - but I had issues pulling the words together
To say that I needed to state the subject, the action, and any necessary modifiers.
Modifier: "No" (disagreeing)
Subject: "Your job" "(unlabeled concept of me / mine / I)"
Action: "Bite me" (<-stolen from his original phrasing, "me" is taken because brain said I was missing a word that represents the concept of myself in relation to the sentence and "me" is one of those words that fills that + its conveniently already attached to another word)
So my brain put it together "No your job is to bite me"
Which when put next to what I was TRYING to say, is the exact opposite. And so unreliable speech moment which had us both laugh a bit because I just responded to him saying that it was his job to bite me with "no your job is to bite me" which is silly
And honestly unreliable speech takes more forms than this cause theres a lot of different types of unreliable speech errors and what not, but I did kind of want to breakdown one of them for people since I have the written language skills to do so.

Hey everyone! this is where the zebra is currently with the design.
It has knee braces!! I will most probably be drawing the zebra usually with them on, but it’s no requirement, for example if anyone else wants to draw the zebra :-]. I always like to make sure an animal design has official colors underneath any clothing and accessory anyway. I think this will be final! thank you everyone for your feedback!

As a reminder, aside from why the zebra was requested for this flag, this is also just a zebra with the disability pride flag on it. It’s just a deisgn to fit the flag, with input from other disabled people in our community. It doesn’t mean other animals can’t have designs with these colors, too! I don’t mean this design to be the only mascot for all disabled people. It’s just a silly series i do of pride animals, and at the time, during disability pride month, I wanted to see what everyone wanted me to start off with for this flag!
the goal with my pride animals is to take requests and make people feel happy and seen.. that’s all <:-)
#disability pride#pride animals#disability#disability pride flag#zebras#I’ve been a little stressed about this animal for the past week.. I will be honest with you#The zebra has many stripes and I wanted to try my best to make sure it wouldn’t cause issues like headaches or other things#also.. if]ve been working on this for a while now.. i want to call it done soon!#But now that this is finished#I will start designing stickers and pins to put on redbubble and also for me to print IRL!#thank you everyone! I’ve also learned more than whatbI already knew this week#Even if it was stressful it was fun to see everyone get so excited when I would show updates to the designs#Sorry for a long speech.. I am a very nervous person today#Excuse my typos! I’m a fast typer and tired from the day#ebonytailsart#Thank you yomcloud for giving me your feedback as well. I don’t have a lot of perspective on visual processing disorders and photensitivity#so it meant a lot to me#just like the other pride animals I am very open to making more animal designs for this flag! But I’d like to save it for the future instea#It’s a bit too soon at the moment. thank youuu

Lately I’ve been thinking about System of a Down’s Wake Up The Souls show in Yerevan, Armenia in 2015 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide. Specifically this part of the show- "[Our governments] will only challenge genocide as a moral imperative when we force them"
As we see multiple genocides happening in the world today, make no mistake that it happens because genocide works the way it’s suppose to- to make citizens turn a blind eye in order for imperialist governments to continue to benefit from genocide.
It’s a cycle, and it’s one that won’t stop unless citizens make it stop. Those of us who aren’t currently being affected by modern genocide, we have no right to lose hope, especially when our governments are banking on the idea of us giving up on creating a world without genocide.
[Full concert]
#If someone could do a transcript of this for me that would be wonderful#I'd do it myself but I have auditory processing disorder so some parts of the speech are illegible to me#system of a down#soad#wake up the souls#video

I fuckin' love Helluva Boss and Hazbin Hotel, but can someone please, PLEASE tell these now VERY SUCCESSFUL showrunners that they need
PROPER SUBTITLES ON THE FIRST TWO EPS OF HELLUVA BOSS AND THE PILOT OF HAZBIN HOTEL???
There's a cute little moment with a deaf child in season 2 episode 7 of Helluva Boss, but it's a SHAME because VERY FEW deaf people are going to be seeing it because the first two episodes of this show don't have fucking subtitles!!
Which tbh really spoils that sweet little moment Fizz has with his deaf fan, and instead makes it feel RESOUNDINGLY hollow!
It's like creating a beautiful painting about the experiences of wheelchair users, and then displaying it at the top of a flight of stairs!!
I just-- I care that the things I like are accessible! These stories often feature disabled characters!! They need to be accessible to disabled people!!! Someone PLEASE deliver this message to Vivienne Medrano or SOMEONE involved with the show! This is important and SO easy to fix!
#vivziepop#vivzieverse#vivienne medrano#helluva boss#fizzarolli#hazbin hotel#hard of hearing#auditory processing disorder#i had to have the transcript pulled up on my phone for all three eps mentioned#and it sucked and only worked bc i can understand like 80% of what i hear#it's not a solution for someone with less ability to hear and or multitask#original#vivziemind#vivzmind#fizz helluva boss#closed captions#subtitles#I could fix this given $50 and 2 hours and they have tens of millions of views so i KNOW they have $50 !!!!#accessibility#i can process just enough speech that i both absolutely need subtitles and yet am able to be KEENLY aware of when they fail horribly

that feeling when you get a case manager becasue some of your autism struggles is with phone calls and auditory processing disorder and speaking in general and need someone to be your ears and voice for you, and the main discussion with her is about that,,,,,and then she calls you to set up the next appointment and wants you to call back. oh come on. why 🥲
#lee rants#autistic#autism#actually autistic#auditory processing disorder#auditory processing issues#speech problems#speech loss#WHY IS ALL “HELP” FOR AUTISTIC PEOPLE SO UNHELPFUL#should have been a red flag when she said she used to work with autistic kids to teach them “appropriate behavior”#when its not our “behaviour” thats the issue. its the sensory and overwhelming nonsense we have to deal with and get no break from😭#but i have no other options so might just need to deal with it#had to listen to 10 chinese spam voicemail messages just to hear hers too because phones are bad and dontletme choose#which one to listen to. just plays all of them for some reason and no options and also didnt tell me she was calling or called???#just a voicemail came through suddenly and the notif didnt go away until i played all the spam messages again and then hers.#really hate phones and phone calls and voicemail. such a horrible form of communication 😭😭😭😭😭#give me visual! let me see your words! works better for me!

Am I the only one who sucks at hearing things correctly?
Like, I will hear the word "conclusion" as the made-up word "conclursion."
You are not the only one, dear fan!

Curious, other people who had speech therapy, how long were you in speech therapy and are you autistic, have adhd, have language processing disorder etc?
I'm mostly curious because in hindsight, we should have noticed our system has significant speaking and speech issues considering us being we were in speech from pre-k to 6th grade - so about 8 years.. which is almost the same amount of time we've been in therapy for everything else
Responses are appreciated ^^

Before you start getting frustrated with someone who just said, "Huh?" asking you to repeat what you just said, ask yourself:
When I started speaking, was their attention available to me or were they occupied by something before?
Did I direct my voice in the direction of which they can hear and/or see?
Did I enunciate my consonant sounds?
Did I enunciate my vowels?
(If they read lips) Did I make my lips, teeth, and tongue legible between each syllable/phonic?
Was there any environmental obstacle noise that was blocking my speech/their hearing?
Did I speak at a steady pace?
Before you start blaming others for not listening to you, please be considerate of how well you may be presenting your speech and if your audience is mentally available to receive you.
This post was written in defense of disabled people, but it should go without saying that people in general vary in abilities. You should practice patience and accommodate accordingly without escalating yourself into anger when the other person is still processing what you said to them.

at the end of the day it's not "did you pronounce it correctly" (because to be quite frank thats not always possible) but instead "did you make an effort to pronounce it"
#not all languages share the same phonemes#making new phonemes hard to pronounce#and speech and language disorders. auditory processing. deafness. those all impact how you pronounce things too#BUT putting that effort in#trying your hardest to pronounce it#not giving up on the name and asking for something easier to say#thats what matters

Actually second post about auditory processing disorder never fucking assume someone just isn’t hearing you on purpose. ‘Selective hearing’ is absolutely fucking bullshit. It is not hard to repeat yourself without making someone else feel bad for something they can’t control. You have no clue what’s going on in their head. This also applies to hearing impaired or deaf folks also because you can’t just assume someone can hear perfectly. literally just repeat yourself. None of the eye rolling and “I guess you just don’t want to hear what I have to say”. YES WE DO. This is the kind of shit that makes my whole adult mother feel like she has to be embarrassed of a disorder she cannot control just because people can’t be bothered to repeat like seven words. And to everyone with difficulty hearing or understanding people who lip read? You fucking rock for making it through the time of heavy masking
Sorry for ranting but The idea that something out of someone’s control is ‘rude’ is so absolutely stupid.
#auditory processing disorder#adhd#<- for me it’s the adhd tbh#I’m thinking and rethinking and rescripting my speech every second#so I forget to process correctly#and then can’t understand people right#honestly the world would be a better place without the term selective hearing in it

Yeeessss
It especially throws us off because we are hearing with APD, so it's jarring to see the subtitles not match up with the audio...
It might only last a short while (however long the curse word is), but in that moment, the discomfort of having a brain reboot as we try to process it outweighs the struggle of not understanding without subtitles altogether
Like, please
If it's a show geared towards adults, let the subtitles curse! A child shouldn't/wouldn't be watching anyways, so why the fuck do you need to censor the language ALREADY BEING USED IN THE SHOW??
was thinking about this earlier, i think it's fuckin stupid that speech to text software, subtitles, etc censor curse words by default. disabled people are not children, we can handle curse words of all fuckin things
and while we're at it, aac software should include curse words, again many aac users are not children and deserve the same options for communicating as speaking people do

Stuttering, APD, Verbal Mazing And More
I originally wrote this for THIS POST when someone was talking about stuttering in fanfic.
Whether you're writing a character with a stutter, or are raising a kid a stutter, or you happen to have verbal language issues of your own... here's the post..
A Nervous Stutter results in what is called Mazing, or rewording the sentence. That is the classic “I, um… well I… look it’s just that… so we…” that @hellishhues is talking about. When someone is mazing their words you’re seeing a form of Speech Apraxia where the brain is having trouble forming verbal speech. This can be brought on by brain damage, memory loss, anxiety, nerves, and several other things.
The root cause of a nervous stutter is a disconnect between the mouth and the brain.
With this you will also sometimes see the classic “S-s-s-sorry…” especially if the person has been training to speak clearly and is now at a point of fatigue or stress where they are not mentally capable of forming the words.
The other kind of stutter is a Physical Stutter, sometimes referred to as slurring, and another facet of Speech Apraxia. This stutter is caused when the muscles of the mouth, tongue, and throat are physically unable to form certain sounds. This is most often seen in the very young and victims of brain trauma.
Sounds are acquired at different ages, so a 2-year-old will probably not be able to clearly pronounce certain words (which is why toddler sound so off when they’re written with developed dialogue). These mispronunciations are sometimes referred to as lisping, but only if the sounds are run together. If the person starts and restarts the sound because they got it wrong, it can also sound like the classic sound stutter.
But it all depends on why the character is stuttering!
Do they have Speech Apraxia, Audio Processing Disorder, muscle dysfunction, or another medical reason to stutter? (1)
Are they stuttering because of anxiety, stress, or fatigue? (2)
Does the stutter stem from intoxication or blood loss? (3)
All of those will sound different!
1 - Will have mazing, repeated sound stutters, and be the classic stutter that annoys OP.
2 - This is where you’ll see the repetition stutter, mazing, rephrasing, and filler words.
3 - This is where you are more likely to see starts and stops and slurring of words.
