Today is St. Lawrence's day
Tumblr media
"He had pity and mounted me behind him on his bony animal, to which I clung the rest of the way, learning the feelings of my adopted name-saint on his gridiron." from T.E. Lawrence's Seven Pillars of Wisdom
Saint Lawrence was one of the seven deacons of the city of Rome under Pope Sixtus II who were martyred in the persecution of the Christians that the Roman Emperor Valerian ordered in 258. As a form of torture Lawrence was placed on a great gridion, with hot coals beneath it. After the martyr had suffered pain for a long time, the legend concludes, he cheerfully declared: "I'm well done on this side. Turn me over!" From this, St. Lawrence derives his patronage of cooks, chefs, and comedians. He died at 10th August, he was 32 years old.
It's interesting that T.E.'s birthday are 5 days after the anniversary of St. Lawrence's death. Also the sense of humor and neglection of pain are things that they had in common.

Happy anniversary to Ursulines around the world!
On November 25, 1535, Angela Merici and 28 companions attended Mass at St. Afra Church and committed themselves to God as “spouses of the Son of the Most High.”
St. Angela chose the feast of St. Catherine of Alexandria for this beginning.
St. Catherine’s story tells of her prayer before a painting of Mary holding the Christ Child, who places a ring of espousal on her finger. Catherine witnessed as a philosopher, arguing for the Christian faith. Tortured on a spiked wheel, she won the crown of martyrdom by the sword.
Girolamo Romanino honored the Company’s foundation by painting St. Catherine with Sts. Ursula and Angela (right). St. Lawrence (left) commemorates Vicar Lorenzo Musio’s support for the new Company.
Christ Jesus, “Lover of us all,” may we and all Ursulines rejoice in gratitude for your love and be your witnesses of love to everyone we meet.
-- Mary-Cabrini Durkin

Happy (almost) feast day of St. Lawrence, my patron saint!
___
JOKE-OGRAPHY:
St. Lawrence was a deacon of Rome in the mid-200s during a time of heavy persecution. When the prefect of Rome demanded all the treasures of the Church, Lawrence asked for a few days to gather it all together. In those few days, he gave all the material wealth of the Church to the poor. When it came time to face the prefect, Lawrence showed up, not with gold and jewels, but with a crowd of poor people, declaring, "Behold, these are the treasures of the Church." The prefect was so amused by this that he had Lawrence roasted alive on a gridiron. Just before he died, Lawrence gave one last quip: "Turn me over, I'm done on this side." Hence, he's the patron saint of cooks and comedians.
