I know I keep saying it and other people keep saying it but what’s so unbelievably frustrating is that MENA people, Palestinians, Iraqis, Persians, Muslims, Arabs… are just people. Like they’re literally just people. They drink, they party, they have sex, they like the same fandoms as you, they can be gay, they can be trans, they can have all the same existential fears, the same mental illnesses, the same infinitely nuanced and complex opinions and frustrations about topics like religion, morality, politics. They’re doctors, lawyers, teachers, actors, scientists, musicians, artists. And because people can’t process this, MENA people are left having to fucking spell out their humanity to people who consider themselves otherwise bleeding heart liberals. It’s insanity.

One of the best indicators of the lack of knowledge people have of Arab people to me is the existence of arak. It’s the Middle Eastern liquor. It’s produced across the region. It’s considered the national drink of Lebanon. Production of arak in Palestine is internationally recognized and has won awards. This seems like a tiny thing, but it’s actually crazy how many westerners truly believe Arab people don’t drink, that they follow religious law with such strict adherence that their behavior is just unrecognizably foreign, and they live in some state of austere repression beyond which the average westerner could even imagine. They have no idea this even exists.

Shortly after the onslaught post-Oct 7 I remember following updates from a Palestinian girl on Twitter who, in between sharing fundraisers for herself and her family (who, thankfully, did manage to evacuate safely, although not without needing serious medical attention) and updates about the broader situation, logged online after a few weeks of silence to lament the fact that she had missed her favorite anime character’s birthday and was sad she hadn’t been able to celebrate it with her mutuals. Her friends drew pictures of him for her.

And like, I truly believe that people are deserving of life even when they are quite different from us. Nobody deserves to be murdered en masse by the imperialistic machine as a display of power, over land, over resources, etc. But people aren’t even able to NOT dehumanize MENA people and realize that they AREN’T that different!! You’ve been fed propaganda your entire life that has convinced you that MENA people are just so deeply foreign that you couldn’t possibly understand or relate to them. Steve Jobs is Syrian. Shakira is Lebanese. Rami Malek is Egyptian. Salma Hayek is Lebanese. DJ Khaled is Palestinian. Freddie Mercury was Persian.

I honestly think at this point it’s partly a coping mechanism—If many westerners were actually to conceptualize the literal millions of human beings, people just like them, their friends, their loved ones, their heroes, their family, as burning unrecognizable bodies left charred in their homes they would just fall apart. So the only option is to insist until you’re red in the face that they couldn’t possibly be the same as you.

Happy belated Ace Day of Visibility! I should've posted something yesterday but I kept trying to wait until the boys got their paint before I posted anything with them in it. Unfortunately, the 2014 tumblr asexuality discourse has found its way to Twitter (in large part thanks to a certain disgraced author) and I had to turn my chair and make this real shitty overlay from a panel Monarch drew 90 years ago because she's too swamped for me to request a dedicated piece of her son. So, have her boy you haven't met yet (his name is Meter, he is lovely, and he is aroace) and a boy you have (Course is probably most like me of my sons, and therefore has inherited the asexuality umbrella). Now, can we please move away from the misconception that people who have schizophrenia are inherently dangerous? I can't tell you how many times (actually I can because I write these encounters down in my journals. 6 as of this post.) someone who didn't know me very well or understand who they were speaking to, has said something to the effect that people diagnosed with schizophrenia are dangerous (but they've said it more like "schizophrenics are just dangerous." I don't like the word "schizophrenic" to describe someone diagnosed with schizophrenia. They are a person first.). People with schizophrenia are statistically more dangerous to themselves than they are to others. In fact, according to the National Institute of Health's website: "Those with schizophrenia had the lowest occurrence of violence over the course of the year (14.8%), compared to those with a bipolar disorder (22.0%) or major depression (28.5%)."

it's really disheartening hearing white trans people talk about 'who i will be safe with if i need to be hidden' when they talk about the possibility of a trump presidency, completely unwilling to engage with the fact that this is already a reality for latine people in the country. like, so divorced from the world immediately outside of small white communities that many talk about persecution and imprisonment as though it's a theoretical thing that can happen in the future and will target us, rather than something that's happening currently and targeting people at greater risk than we are.

potional hot take(?) I've wanted to make a post or video about how people doomposting about the downfall of the Vocaloid fandom is not productive and also very annoying or how "Sekai killed vocaloid" is a false statement and literally just "old thing good new thing bad" posting

self care is running silly little scenarios to confirm that lando is unlikely to catch max in the WDC even if lando maintains his current post-miami points average and the RBR team continue to struggle 🤕💓

some other quick and dirty observations:

oscar's points gain post-miami is almost identical to lando's 👀

RBR have well and truly lost the WCC, and mclaren will likely take first position within the next couple of races

checo has a 3 point average gain since miami.... in a red bull

RBR/max really cannot afford to lost even more performance to mclaren/lando because then the WDC really will be in trouble

but. it's really unlikely that max will be getting 10 points (or less) for the rest of the season. I'm just doomposting.
