Ramble of the month November 2023: 90’s MCU phase 4 – The Secret Wars, the Defenders and putting French and Saunders in a comic book film

As we come into the first of our last two monthly rambles for 2023, I’ve decided to go back to unveiling more of my alternate superhero film franchises. I could go for more topical issues, but those will likely stress me out if I go too in-depth on them, and by sheer happenstance, episodes I’m presently reviewing from the last season of Star Trek: Voyager will cover these a bit. So, that being the case, I figure I might as well close out 2024 by going for subjects I can enjoy talking about instead of anything winding me up.

By now, I’m sure anyone reading these rambles on a regular basis will know the drill, but for any new readers, let’s recap. At the moment, I’m showcasing two hypothetical superhero film universes. One is a DC film universe where Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins was the launch point instead of Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, the other is a Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) that begins from 1992 instead of 2008. The change in time period means Marvel would have all their film rights still to hand (those weren’t sold until 1995), and a lot of casting and story choices would change because the source material would be different. To complete the re-cap, let’s check out the titles of films in the first three phases and do a quick plot summary.

Phase 1, as most could probably surmise, is very much about establishing the MCU and its characters. The Fantastic Four are done first to mirror their points of distinction from other superhero groups that hold true in the comics, with the Avengers and X-Men coming later on. Phase 2 then expands and develops those characters and brings about an early mantle change, with Tony Stark going down the route of alcoholism as in the comics and Rhodey having to become Iron Man, again as in the comics. We also see the death of Gwen Stacy, having built up to Norman Osborn becoming the Green Goblin in the films instead of rushing that arc in one film. Phase 3 then brings out a lot more of the third-film-loss trope we know from the real MCU. At the same time, we also get a lot of new characters introduced, bringing us to the slate for Phase 4.

With this phase, you can see we’re really trying a lot more new titles compared to past phases. This is because much of the cast of the MCU to date is tied up in the events of the two Secret Wars films, thereby leaving a lot of room for other characters and teams to be given the spotlight. How does this all pan out in practice? Well, let’s start looking at the films of phase 4, beginning with Black Panther…

As those who read my August ramble will know, my alternative MCU introduces the Black Panther via the Fantastic Four film World War III, in homage to the comics version of the character having the same debut.�� However, just as the real MCU version went on to a solo film after getting his cinematic debut, so too does this version of T’Challa. I’ve kept Chadwick Boseman in the main role as he could still play an adult King T’Challa back in 2004. The same can’t be said for Letitia Wright with Shuri, and some other roles would also need shifting around, hence the case above. The only other actor from the real MCU to retain their casting is Andy Serkis as Klaw. As for the plot, it’s strictly T’Challa versus Klaw for him murdering T’Challa’s father years earlier, so there’s less focus on challenge rites in this film.

I’ve also retained the real MCU’s depiction of M’Baku as a voice of dissent to T’Challa’s rule, but with the full intention of taking him full villain at a later point. As for why no Killmonger, I wanted to build up to him and not use up all of T’Challa’s most notable foes in one film. For direction, I felt it was important that it still be a Black person in the director’s chair, so from the directors active at this time, I picked Tim Story, the man who directed Fox’s Fantastic Four films. The first of those wasn’t too bad, and with a better studio to work with, I bet Story could do a good job on a property like Black Panther.

Now for the comic book neophytes wondering why Carol Danvers isn’t Captain Marvel, this is one of those plot-points that is only supported by a more recent selection of Marvel’s comic-book lore. The original Captain Marvel within Marvel’s source material was the Kree character named Mar-Vell, who was gender-flipped and played by Annette Benning in the 2019 Captain Marvel film, leaving Jude Law to play the villainous Kree Yon-Rogg. Carol Danvers was first turned into Ms Marvel following events in the original Captain Marvel comics, only to cease using the title after loosing her original powers to the mutant known as Rogue. Following adventures with the X-Men, Carol Danvers gained new powers and joined a group of space pirates called the Starjammers as Binary. Later, she came back to Earth and went back to her old Ms Marvel codename, then her old Air Force callsign of Warbird, before finally becoming Captain Marvel.

Now while I can’t say precisely when Carol became CM in the comics, I do know it’s sometime in the 2010’s, so a 2004 film won’t support her being the first Captain Marvel. Instead, this film goes back to the early comics and makes Mar-Vell the original title-holder, telling a fairly simple first contact story with Carol as the audience POV character. Rather than go for any obvious film actress of this time period, I decided it would be cool to see Melissa Joan Hart take on the role of Carol Danvers opposite Jude Law. We then have a mix of great actors, including Trek alumni in the form of Avery Brooks (DS9’s Captain Sisko). As we’re going down a first contact route without any Trek overtones, I opted for Independence Day’s Roland Emmerich to helm this one.

So, what is Secret Wars? Well, there’s been at least three instances of stories with this title in Marvel’s history, at least going by the comics. The original was a mini-series in the mid-1980’s, where a being known as the Beyonder created a planet called Battleworld from pieces of other planets (including a suburb of Denver, Colorado for reasons I can’t totally fathom). He then transported a selection of Marvel’s heroes and villains to Battleworld and offered to grant whichever side won whatever they desired. Despite a brief usurpation of the Beyonder’s powers by Doom, the heroes apparently won and returned home. The second story was Secret Wars II, in which the Beyonder went to Earth and assumed human form in an effort to further his understanding of life in our universe. Frustrated by what he learned, the Beyonder almost destroyed reality.

More recently, around 2015, there was a new Secret Wars which was similar to the first mini-series, but involved some kind of multiversal crossover, the apparent idea being to amalgamate some of Marvel’s other comic book continuities like the Ultimates comics with the main Marvel comics continuity. For this film and its sequel, I’d be looking to do an adaptation of the original, but with greater emphasis on the war aspect. In this case, the Beyonder pulls off the same creation of Battleworld, but like the adaptation of the story in Spider-Man: The Animated Series, he gives the super-villains a little head-start to better challenge the heroes.

Now the bulk of the cast for this film is carried over from past MCU films in my alternative continuity, but there are a few new characters in the mix. In particular, Colossus and Gambit make their first MCU appearances, having both joined Storm’s band of X-Men since the events of Fall of the Mutants in the last phase, with Colossus being a returning former student whereas Gambit is a total newcomer. I chose Cavill for Colossus because he can look the part and is capable of doing other accents than his own, while Zachary Levi gets the role of Gambit due to being a native of Louisiana, not to mention he once played Fandrall the Dashing in Thor: The Dark World. As such, I can easily see Levi modifying his hair and accent just slightly to pull off a perfect Gambit.

On the villain side, the Frightful Four, Lizard, Electro and Mentallo are all new additions, the last character being part of Magneto’s Brotherhood for this film. Indeed, as Magneto ends up among the heroes to start with, Mentallo and Calisto set up a mutant-ruled fiefdom on Battleworld in this film, and for Magneto, the question asked of his character is whether he’ll tear it down or try to take it over. As the films will also be taking the war part more seriously, don’t expect the heroes to all walk ok by the end. This is also why Steven Spielberg gets to direct; who better than the director of Saving Private Ryan to handle superheroes having to get into a war?

Having given Captain Britain a solo film and scattered the X-Men in the last phase, the timing would then be right in this phase to bring about the British off-shoot of the X-Men that is Excalibur. As this MCU has yet to uncork any time-travel for its films, we substitute Rachel Summers of the original Excalibur comics for Brian Braddock’s twin sister Psylocke in the film version. At the same time, while Banshee does appear in the film, he’s taken out early and is then kept to the side-lines.

However, the plot still tries to echo the original Excalibur graphic novel; the interdimensional tyrant Mojo is hunting someone, and uses Gatecrasher and her group, known as Technet, to grab them. With Rachel Summers not being used, Mojoverse native and rebel hero Longshot is instead the target, along with his mutant girlfriend Dazzler. When the hunt spills over to Britain, Captain Britain, his sister and his girlfriend team up with Nightcrawler and Shadowcat of the X-Men on an inter-dimensional rescue mission, and thus Excalibur is born.

Casting-wise, everyone down as far as Detective Kate Fraser is reprising from past films. From Dr Moira MacTaggart on down, the cast is new to this film. Much like with Captain Britain’s solo film, I’d want a lot of British talent to be involved, which accounts for most of the casting choices. However, since a lot of the characters come from another dimension, there can be more flexibility regarding accents. This accounts for why the likes of Jim Carrey, Donal Logue, Ben Foster and Julia Styles enter into the film. I also cast French and Saunders here, though in a somewhat atypical fashion. Here, Dawn French would likely be in either a mo-cap suit or heavy make-up to play Gatecrasher, whereas Jennifer Saunders would be voicing a small talking creature named Yap, who is usually clinging to Gatecrasher’s shoulder. Add in the likes of Hugh Laurie and Miranda Richardson, both alumni of the Blackadder sit-coms, and we have some real British comedy gold in the line-up.

Direction-wise, it’s back to Christopher Nolan to keep the film British behind the scenes as well as in front of camera.

Defenders (2005) Directed by Sam Raimi

The original Defenders comics revolved around a superhero “non-team” that would unite when the need arose, but lacked a standing headquarters, charter, etc. like the Avengers had. This made the group something of a haven for the outsiders who formed it, namely Doctor Strange, Namor the Sub-Mariner and the Hulk, with the Silver Surfer becoming an honourary founding member later on. The team also gained a few more dedicated members in the forms of the Asgardian Valkyrie, wealthy industrialist Kyle Richmond, and superhero fan girl turned superhero Hellcat. This film basically shows the Defenders forming against Doctor Strange’s one-time foe Yandroth, in part because Yandroth unleashes some chaos while many other heroes are missing due to the events of Secret Wars.

Only the top four Defenders, plus Wong and Clea, are retained from past films in this MCU. The rest of the cast are new additions, but really, it’s combining the likes of Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, John Cusack and David Wenham into the core of the team that’s the real excitement. Mind you, the rest of the cast are all well-known and highly skilled actors as well. Direction-wise, I figured that since Strange and Yandroth are both on the mystic horror side of the Marvel world, a horror director of note like Sam Raimi would be good.

Ghost Rider 2 (2005) Directed by Tim Burton

Closing out 2005’s portion of this alternate MCU is a sequel for Johnny Blaze’s iteration of Ghost Rider, with Tim Burton back at the helm for obvious reasons. Only the top three roles are retained from film 1, while the rest is fresh casting. Story-wise, it’s a bit of a mash-up of a few different elements from the original Ghost Rider run into a single narrative. Following the events of film 1, Blaze is living a bit of a drifter’s existence as he tries to deal with the demon spirit within him always taking over. His girlfriend Roxanne is searching for him, and her scenes in the film are basically a kind of “will-she-won’t-she” break from the A-plot.

Said A-Plot is that a small town is being terrorised by a cult that has claimed the life of the son of a prominent senator. When Blaze arrives, it isn’t long before his flaming alter ego is up to his fiery skull in their business, resulting in cult leader Mark Crane making a deal with Mephistopheles to imbue two of his henchmen with demonic powers. Also caught in the mix are the senator’s daughter and a visiting reporter, each of whom is attracted to Johnny and reacts differently when he becomes the Ghost Rider.

As 2006 begins, we get another X-Men off-shoot, this time focusing on the original X-Men as the comics reckon things becoming X-Factor. The team is given some very different origins this time round, but it’s still the classic team membership fans of the original X-Factor comics know. In the film, Warren has lost his wings following injuries sustained in the events of the X-Men: Fall of the Mutants film. Consequently, he is duped into becoming part of the Horsemen of Apocalypse as the mutant known as Apocalypse rises to attack humanity. The rest of the X-Men alumni (Cyclops, Jean, Iceman and Beast) band together with encouragement from a government operative who is really the mutant shape-shifter Mystique, plus a trio of X-students currently in the team’s charge.

After the five mutants of X-Factor, we get mostly new characters to this MCU and thus a lot of new faces. In terms of character selection, that’s mostly about trying to honour the comics when it comes to the Horsemen, since only the 90’s animated series has ever done so with these villains. The whole original idea of the Horsemen was to evoke their biblical counter-parts, so anything not doing that isn’t doing the job right, at least not for the team’s original incarnation. Plague and Caliban, as former members of the Morlocks, are reprised roles from X-Men: Fall of the Mutants, while Famine and War come into the film new. As for working in Mystique, that’s someone we’ll certainly see in future films. Direction-wise, I like calling on Trek alumni to direct given some of the thematic overlaps between X-lore and Trek, hence my selection of Levar Burton.

By the time Spielberg brings us part 2 of Secret Wars, we’ve lost Quicksilver, ideals are getting blurred and our heroes are struggling, which isn’t helped by Doom managing to usurp the powers of the Beyonder. When this brings an unexpected peace to Battleworld, the heroes face the question of whether or not they should try and challenge Doom, assuming they can. The film will also honour the original comics by making it the origin of the Venom symbiote, something no adaptation has ever done. The one other change is the incorporation of the alien one-shot character Zsaji from the original Secret Wars, though in keeping with taking the war more seriously, she has a stronger role than just being a random healer and would-be love interest to Johnny Storm or Colossus.

Most of the characters Marvel and Netflix put in the Defenders streaming show would originally have been members of, or been acquainted with, the little-known Heroes for Hire group, primarily formed in the comics by Luke Cage, Iron First and Misty Knight. This film works in a few more street-level members, including Shang-Chi, Colleen Wing and Jessica Jones. The team consists of various for-hire vigilantes and volunteers who are trying to keep the streets of New York safe following the apparent retirement of Daredevil. When an enclave of organised criminals attempts to eliminate them, SHIELD agents Quartermain and Dugan reach out to unite the heroes into a team.

This is a new film and new cast, with some roles leaping readily to mind while others have taken a bit more thought to select. Again, I’ve gone for at least one Trek alumni by picking Garrett Wang of Voyager fame to play Shang-Chi, and I’ve also looked to sci-fi series Mutant X for another bit of casting. Tom McCamus, who played Mason Eckhart in that show, takes up the role of Killgrave for this film, though the character appears only in flashbacks, as I feel that’s sufficient for the film’s plot to showcase where Jessica is mentally and emotionally as the team comes together. Direction-wise, I picked Paul McGuigan based on the work he did on the film Lucky Number Slevin.

Namor The Submariner (2007) Directed by Gore Verbinski

Kicking off the 2007 films that conclude this MCU’s phase four is a solo entry for Namor the Sub-Mariner, who like Black Panther got his introduction via Fantastic Four: World War III in recognition of his first Marvel appearance (the character previously having existed under the company’s pre-1960’s name of Timely Comics). Having also appeared in the Defenders film earlier in this phase, this solo film has Namor return to Atlantis to find his throne under threat by a coup, involving the Nemurian Llyra and a traitor from within his imperial court. The film includes at least two other characters who have betrayed or openly opposed Namor in the comics to keep fans guessing and work in a little defiance of expectation. The film also works in another undersea superhero in the form of Stingray to give audiences a POV character for delving into Namor’s world.

Namor, Krang and Lady Dorma are reprised roles for this film, while the rest of the cast is new. For direction, I decided to look into the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise for directors with experience of filming anything at sea with fantastical elements, and based on this chose Gore Verbinski as he directed the entire original trilogy of that franchise.

In this third and final solo film for Doctor Strange, our title hero tries to help his fellow Defender Valkyrie acclimate to life on Earth, and is also visited by fellow sorcerer Brother Voodoo. The time he devotes to his guests puts a strain on his romantic relationship with Clea, but when Baron Mordo returns with the backing of Dormammu once more, battle takes precedence. However, the battle is not all it seems, as Dormammu’s sister Umar and the mysterious Dweller-In-Darkness are lurking in the shadows. By the film’s end, someone will have to be sacrificed to keep Earth safe from a grave mystic peril.

A lot of the casting is retained from prior films, but Brother Voodoo, Umar and DID are all new roles. Ruth Wilson and Colin Firth are both chosen for the gravitas their villain roles need, while Doug E. Doug is my choice for Brother Voodoo based on the more serious moments he had at times when playing Sanka in Cool Runnings. For direction, I think it’s a good idea to stick with Sam Raimi on this one to keep things consistent with the Defenders film that precedes this one.

So, let’s recap what we’ve had by way of Iron Man lore in this alternate MCU. The first two IM films are directed by Steven Spielberg with Tom Selleck playing Iron Man, dealing with similar story arcs to the first two films of the real MCU, prior to forming the Avengers in a team-up film under director Andrew Davis. IM3 then shows Stark fall victim to his alcoholism and Samuel L Jackson’s Rhodey taking up the Iron Man mantle, with Sam Raimi directing. After that, Rhodey’s Iron Man features in a second Avengers film under Davis and the Secret Wars two-parter with Spielberg. Here, we get the director of the real MCU’s first two Iron Man movies on hand to guide a film showcasing the comeback trail of Tony Stark and James Rhodes becoming War Machine, all to face Iron Man’s arch-foe the Mandarin.

For this film, a lot of things are different. First, while the Mandarin has his proper ten rings from the comics, he is still developed beyond a stereotype, being presented as a Chinese businessman first and foremost who is using alien tech rings to try and conquer what his corporate efforts cannot. He avoids some of his comic counterpart’s more flamboyant attire, but nonetheless has a fondness for China’s dynastic era and opposes its modern-day government. Second, we’re done with Happy and Pepper, and while Bethany Cabe is retained from IM3, we also include the insane stalker girlfriend Kathy Dare for the purpose of misdirecting the fans. After all, if we’re not doing it with the Mandarin, we might as well do it somewhere.

And that concludes our look into phase 4 of our alternate MCU. Next month, we’ll check phase 4 of the alternate DC movie universe. Until then, ta-ta for now.

“Damnit!” Wiping the light sheen of sweat off her forehead, Nala quickly twisted the staff in her hand and lifted it in front of her face.

“Are you alright?” T’Challa questioned with pure concern. He stabbed his staff into the ground and started to approach her. “Na-“

However, the king’s eyes widened with surprise when her foot collided with his jaw in a perfectly executed move.

He grunted as he flexed his mouth. She packed a hell of a punch and kick. “I’ll take that as a yes.”

She said nothing, discarding her staff and opting for her body as her choice of weapon. If T’Challa hadn’t looked up, he would have been hit once again, but the king regained his sense of self-control and easily dodged her attempted kick.

Nala glared as he caught her ankle and proceeded to twist her leg, forcing her to flip and go for him with her other leg. T’Challa backed away, forcing her to hit nothing but air as she released a growl in frustration.

T’Challa also discarded his staff and rolled his shoulders. Getting into position, he crouched slightly and smirked.

“Come on.”

Nala smiled, mirroring his stance, and gestured with her chin. “Ready when you are, Kumkani.”

T’Challa smiled and charged for her, Nala dropping low, one leg stretched outward as she slid it across the floor to trip him. Of course, T’Challa easily dodged it but found Nala’s foot pressed against his chest as she pushed him across the floor.

She went to lunge at him, but he grabbed her arm and maneuvered it so that he had her against his back, his forearm wrapped around her heaving chest.

“Your Xhosa is getting better.” He complimented with a chuckle.

“Thanks,” she smirked. “You know what else is getting better?”

His eyes squinted in suspicion. “What?” T’Challa’s jaw tensed when he felt her hand over his crotch, her small fingers grabbing the outline of his dick. “Bast.”

“Outsmarting you,” she smiled with satisfaction after hitting her head back against him and breaking away before landing a smooth side kick against the side of his head.

“That was cruel, Nala.” He glared.

“No,” he cursed as her fist collided with his face. “That was strategic.”

T’Challa wiped at his mouth and chuckled. She’d drawn blood. “You sure about that?”

She frowned. “What a-“ Nala was cut off as she was hit from behind, turning around as she stumbled on the floor, she looked up to see thee Doras aiming their staffs in her direction.

She smirked.

This was going to be fun.

Before anyone could register what was going on, she jumped up using pure core strength and used her staff to start battling with all three. One thing she knew about the Doras was that they worked in a type of synchronicity. There was no fighting one individually. They moved as a unit.

So, the princess of Niganda moved quickly, ensuring to not attack one without hitting at the other two using whatever part of her body was available.

T’Challa watched from the side as his beloved effectively grounded them, one by one. They fought valiantly, but Nala was too proficient, using a variety of fighting styles to defend herself. When it was all said and done, all three were on the ground as her chest heaved.

Twisting her staff, she looked over T’Challa and tilted her head to the side. “Is that the best you can do?”

He smiled and said something in Xhosa. Nala immediately heard the movement from behind her and spun around just in time to ward off Okoye’s attack.

The General pulled back and straightened her posture, a fierce look on her face.

“Your Highness,” she nodded politely as Nala also straightened up, mirroring Okoye’s action with her staff.

“General,” Nala started, positioning herself with her spear aimed at the leader of the Dora Milaje. “We both know you’re not one for much talking when it comes to a battle.”

Okoye cracked a smile. “My apologies, it was my attempt at allowing you a second to catch your breath as you are clearly exhausted.”

“Makes no difference,” Nala shrugged. “The outcome will still be the same.”

Okoye’s grin widened as the two prepared to go at it, a true test to see who was the fiercest warrior of the both of them.

“Are you serious?” All three eyes turned to the door as a pregnant Hawla stood with disappointed eyes and her hands on her hips. “You’re doing this, now? Of all times?”

Nala rolled her eyes and stood up, resting her elbow on the non-pointed side of her staff. “Hello, Hawla.”

“And you,” she walked into the room, wagging her finger toward an amused smile. “You know that I need her, that I’ve been looking for her.”

“Have you now?” Nala smiled at T’Challa’s attempt at playing coy. “I did not even-”

“Ugh! You infuriate me! All of you!” Nala quietly snickered as she looked over at Okoye. “Raincheck?”

“Of course, your highness,” Okoye smirked. “Though, the outcome will still be the same.”

Nala laughed. She really liked Okoye.

“I would say that I will you tonight,” the princess smirked as T’Challa grabbed her by her hips and twisted her so that she was facing him. “But I fear that I already have plans.”

She nodded softly. “It is perfectly fine, Kumkani.” A beat. “I too have obligations.”

He propped a brow, pulling her into him. “Oh?”

She pushed her lips together and brought her hands to lock behind his neck. “I do.”

“An important event, I assume?” He questioned.

“Ehhh,” she shrugged. “Not necessarily. Just a little wedding-”

“Little?” Hawla interrupted with wide eyes. “This is n-”

“Perhaps she is in here?”

“Shit, it makes sense. She probably just wanted to be with her parents to escape Hawla’s overbearing as-”

M’Baku and Erik stopped in their tracks as they entered the room to find all eyes on them, including an irritated Hawla.

“Fuck.” Erik mumbled.

“My lo-”

“What are you two doing here, and where is Bunme? You’re supposed to be watching her.” Hawla fisted her hand.

“About that,” Erik scratched the back of his neck. “We kinda….well….we misplaced her.”

“You what?” Hawla’s eyes widened as Nala and T’Challa withheld their snickers. They knew exactly where their energetic five-year-old daughter was. “How do you misplace a whole human being?”

“Well, she is a tiny human b-”

“Shut up, husband!” She snapped, forcing both men to quiet down. “Honest to Bast, two formidable men as yourself and neither is capable of keeping up with a child.”

“She is not your average child.” Erik pointed out in an effort to defend himself. “I keep trying to tell them that she needs a damn leash.”

“Erik, we are not putting our child on a leash.” Nala rolled her eyes and shook her head. “Come.” She looked over her shoulders and shot her fiancé a quick wink. “Let us go find that rambunctious child of mine.”

“I can’t believe you lost her,” T’Challa heard Nala complain and waited until he was sure that the group was out of hearing distance before speaking.

“Sam Isipho,” he called out, crossing his arms as he turned around while quietly motioning the Doras away.

“I’m not here,” Bunme whispered, causing a smile to appear on her father’s face.

“Oh?” He propped a brow. “Then why do I see you?” Of course, he couldn’t really see her, but she didn’t know that.

Bunme gasped. “Little Kitty, I told you that he could see us.” T’Challa watched her and her pet come from behind the stacks of workout mats. “Hi, Baba.”

“Bunme,” he nodded in her direction. “Would you like to explain why you are hiding?”

“Umm….” She rocked back and forth on her heels. “Well….”

“Bun….”

“Auntie Hawla is being really bossy and won’t let me play,” she finally pouted.

The corners of T’Challa mouth turned into an upward smile. “Bun, you know what today is….”

“It’s post’ to be happy,” she dropped her head. “But Auntie keeps yelling at everybody, and now it’s not very fun.”

He sighed. Hawla certainly had certainly worked hard the past two months and wanted to ensure that everything went according to plan; however, he could see how her desire for perfection drove away some people. Bunme included.

“Come here,” he dropped down and extended one knee, pulling Bunme on his lap as Little Kitty sat there watching the two interact. “Hawla just wants to make sure that everything is perfect, sweetheart.”

“But, it already is, Baba.” Bunme sighed and looked at him with confusion. “We’re gonna be a real family….ain’t that all that matters?”

A warm smile crept on T’Challa’s face at his daughter’s heartwarming statement. Bast knew he’d also worked hard ever since he and Nala finally told her the truth about him being her father. Of course, Bunme was not an average five-year-old. Her wisdom and perception exceeded her chronological age; T’Challa had to earn her trust back, and rightfully so.

It wasn’t easy at first.

But, he’d been dedicated and determined, his hard work paying off in that he and his little princess were right back where they used to be prior to the chaos: crazy about each other.

“You’re right, sweetheart.” He murmured and kissed her temple. “You’re absolutely right.”

“Uncle Erik said Auntie Hawla is also being mean because she’s having a baby.” Bunme shrugged as T’Challa made a mental note to talk to Erik about the conversations and remarks he makes around Bunme. “I hope m-” Her eyes widened as she covered her hands with her mouth.

“Hope what?” He pressed. “What is it Bunme?”

“Umm, nothing, Baba.” Bunme hurried up and hopped off his leg. “Come on, Little Kitty. We gotta go finish getting ready.”

“Bunme?” T’Challa frowned.

“See you later, Baba!” She yelled while running out of the room, Little Kitty, as always, right by her side.

The king sat there stunned and thoroughly confused.

What was she about to say?

“You wanted to speak with me, princess?” Nala looked up from her seat at her vanity and saw N’Jobu standing in the doorway.

“Yes.” She smiled and made sure that the belt for her robe was secured around her waist before standing up. “If you don’t mind?”

“Of course not,” he shook his head as Nala politely asked the room full of servants to give her and Erik’s father a few minutes of privacy. “Although, I will say that I am a bit surprised you called for me. I’d think you extremely busy.”

“Oh, I am,” she chuckled as the two sat on one of the sofas. “But this is important.”

A slight look of surprise invaded his eyes. “Oh?”

“Yes,” Nala suddenly found herself overcome with nerves. She’d rehearsed over and over again how she was to approach him, but it was so different talking to yourself as opposed to the person with whom you actually had the question for. “From the moment that Bunme and I arrived here, you have been nothing but kind and caring. Never have you ostracized her or me, always the first to defend me even in my deception….and near imprisonment.” The two shared a small laugh at her slight joke. “And, well, you know that my parents….” Her head dropped as a tear slipped out, N’Jobu naturally reaching out to place his hand on top of hers.

“Even if they were still here though, I-I-wouldn’t ask this of them….of him.” She lifted her head to see N’Jobu’s unsure expression.

“I do not think I follow, Princess….”

Nala took a deep breath and lightly squeezed his hand. “You have been more of a father figure to me than my own father ever was, and though I also asked Belay, I was wondering if you would also...well….,” her heart was rapidly beating. “If you would….perhaps...walk me down the aisle? With him?”

There was a brief moment of silence, one that forced Nala to close her eyes, suddenly regretting the query. She should have kept it to herself and not followed her first mind. She should have just stuck with having only Belay walk her. She sh-

“Nala,” she forced her head up and gazed at a misty-eyed N’Jobu. “It would be my honor.”

It was almost as if a heavy weight was lifted off her shoulder, the princess sniffling and shaking her head as she pulled the man in for a warm embrace.

“Thank you, N’Jobu.” A beat. “Thank you.”

After having her makeup done and hair slicked down into a low bun to accommodate her headpiece, it was time for Nala to put on her dress that she’d had made by her longtime dressmaker from back home in Niganda who would now serve the soon-to-be queen in Wakanda.

However, there was a brief scare when trying to zip up the dress. It was a bit snugger since the last fitting a week prior, but thankfully, they were able to make it work, Nala looking absolutely stunning.

Though she was a bit annoyed that the shoes weren’t visible.

“Look, mommy!” Bunme came running in the room, holding onto the bottom of her princess dress. A light layer of makeup coated her face, and her tiny tiara stood out against her curls that were pulled up into a neat bun. “Little Kitty and I are all ready.”

Nala looked over and smiled at the sight of the panther who has a white and bedazzled collar around her neck.

“Oooh,” Bunme looked at her mother with awe. “Mommy, you look so pretty!”

Nala grinned. “Thank you, baby. So do you!” She gathered the back of her dress and sat down in a seat, patting the spot next to her. “Bunme?”

“Hmm?”

She went to chew on her bottom lip but remembered the neutral lipstick that could stain her teeth and decided against it. “Are you…..are you okay with this? Do you want me and your daddy to get married?” She nodded. “Are you sure?”

“Of cowse’, mommy.” She smiled widely, revealing the tooth that she’d lost a few weeks ago. “Everybody needs a family.” A beat. “Now we have ours.”

Nala closed her eyes and pulled her daughter into her chest. “I love you, Bunme.”

The little princess returned her smile and accepted her embrace. “I love you too, mommy.”

The ceremony was packed.

Political figures ranging from the president/prime minister for almost every country in Africa and other nations around the world (sans the United States) were in attendance for the union between the King of Wakanda and the Princess of Niganda.

Media coverage was massive, everyone wanting the inside scoop on what was being called the “wedding of the century.”

Not only were politicians in attendance but other prominent figures such as Beyonce, Jay-Z, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Oprah, Cicely Tyson, Angela Bassett, Denzel Washington, Forest Whitaker, Halle Berry, Viola Davis, Colin Kaepernick, Maxine Waters, Kamala Harris, Lebron James, Steph Curry, Issa Rae, Usain Bolt, etc.

Former President Barack Obama and his family also flew out for the special event.

And, of course, members of the Avengers were in attendance including Sam Wilson, Bucky Barnes, Natasha Romanov, and Steve Rogers.

Tony Stark refused to come when he learned that Steve would be attending.

Almost all of Wakanda was also there, and for those who didn’t arrive in time to get seating watched from their homes as it was being broadcasted across the small nation.

T’Challa stood at the end of the altar, Zuri at his side, the spiritual leader the one who would preside over the ceremony.

“He is with us, you know.” T’Challa looked at the man who’d been like a father to him, “T’Chaka…..he is proud of you, of the man you’ve become.”

The king nodded in appreciation and smiled warmly. “Thank you, Zuri.”

The older man returned the smile before the music played which indicated the start of the ceremony.

As far as I can see

Erik and Nakia were the first to walk together, the chosen bridesmaid dresses looking absolutely stunning on the general.

You will always be

The one for me

Next came M’Baku and Hawla who looked visibly relieved that the day was finally here but also that all her hard work was paying off.

I believe in dreams again

I believe that love will never end

After them, Shuri and D’Kar walked, T’Challa trying to avoid his irritation that the two were so close together. He’d accepted that his sister had a boyfriend….but that didn’t mean he liked it.

And like the river finds the sea

Okoye and W’Kabi were next, both discreetly keeping keen eyes on everyone. Security for the event was heavy, both of their soldiers stationed all around the area.

However, T’Challa’s smile was inescapable as Bunme appeared at the end of the aisle, accompanied by Little Kitty (who she absolutely demanded be a part of the ceremony) and skipped her way down the “runway” while saying “hi!” to a few people along the way.

I will never leave your side

I will never hurt your pride

And, of course, the princess couldn’t stop herself from running up to her father, throwing her little body against his leg. T’Challa couldn’t resist picking her up and pecking her cheek. She tightened her little arms around his neck, an indication that she wanted him to hold her.

When all the chips are down

I will always be around

The crowd was clearly touched by the warm interaction between the two.

I will never leave you out

I will always let you in

To places no one's ever been

Deep inside can't you see

However, their attention was quickly redirected to the end of the aisle as all eyes focused on the woman of the hour. T’Challa’s chest tightened as he set his gaze on Nala who had N’Jobu on her left and Belay on her right. He couldn’t even think about his irritation that her brother was able to attend. No, he was too captivated by his soon-to-be wife.

But I would play the fool forever

Just to be with you forever

This was it. The moment he’d dreamt about for years, the reality he thought a fantasy, but it wasn’t fictional. She was here. She was real, and she was his.

I believe in miracles

And baby you're a dream come true

It seemed as though each step she took occurred in slow motion. He just so strongly desired to have her across from him, in his other arm, his family in his arms. Little did he know, Nala felt the same way, her eyes watering as she focused on her daughter and husband to be.

As she reached the end, she kissed both Belay and N’Jobu on the cheek as they helped her up the two steps, leaving Nala directly across T’Challa and Bunme. Finally.

The groom and bride stared at each other, their smiles as broad as the extent of their love.

“Hi,” T’Challa breathed, Nala smiling bashfully as she dropped her head.

Bunme rolled her eyes and whispered in his ear, using her fingers to ensure that outside noise didn’t interrupt her message. “You gotta tell her she looks pretty, Baba!”

The king chuckled and lightly squeezed her before carefully placing her back down on the ground, Bunme going to hug her mother before sauntering over to stand by the bridal party.

“You look beautiful,” he complimented.

“Thank you.” She blushed. “I suppose you look rather decent yourself.”

He shook his head and stared into her eyes. “Worried?”

Her answer was immediate. “Never.”

The ceremony began seconds later, T’Challa and Nala listening intently as he proceeded to recite the standard dialogue for a Wakandan wedding. While vows weren’t something couples did in Wakanda, T’Challa had asked if Nala wanted to include them in their wedding. She declined.

She didn’t need to explain her love for him and vice versa. The proof stood a few feet away from them, lightly petting Little Kitty.

However, a non-Wakandan tradition that T’Challa chose to implement seeing as it was done in Niganda, was gift Nala with a ring.

While he’d purchased her engagement ring back during their Oxford days, he had her wedding ring custom made just for her, the price in the six-figure range. He didn’t care though. She deserved it.

She deserved the world, and he was prepared to give it to her.

“....Remember: I love you. Your families love you. Your daughter loves you. Your friends love you. You love each other.” Zuri spoke loudly and proudly following the exchange of rings. “That love must be strong enough for each other, for your family, for your country. You are forming the foundation of a nation, a nation that will be in the forefront of all nations in times to come. Are you ready?”

Their reply was instantaneous. “Yes.”

Zuri smiled. “The Panther God has blessed this couple. Pity anyone who would stand in the path of their happiness.” He grabbed both of their wrists, forcing their arms up to the sky while turning them around to face the crowd. “Now let us celebrate their love.”

Drums beating, music playing, and deafening cheers consumed the venue as T’Challa wasted no time in pulling Nala into him, kissing her with all the love and passion he felt toward her and she to him.

“I love you.” He mumbled, his forehead pressed against hers.

She shut her lids. “I love you too.”

“Hey!” Bunme squeezed between them, coming from behind. “What about me?”

T’Challa laughed loudly and picked her up, both he and Nala kissing each of her cheeks.

“Of course, we love you too.”

The reception was amazing, with the removable train of Nala’s dress allowing her to move around more freely and have a good time with family and friends. Of course, Bunme stole the show, being in front of the line as everyone danced.

Because of the size of the wedding party, there were several cakes and a copious amount of food to ensure that they didn’t run out.

“I want some more ice cream,” Bunme exclaimed, jumping off her father’s lap to scurry over to the table with desserts. “Come on, Little Kitty.”

“Bun-” Nala went to call only to see that she was already out of hearing distance. She shook her head and looked over at Erik. “You are going to have some problems with her tonight.”

He frowned. “Why?”

“That’s like her third cone.” The queen shook her head. “Bast be with you.”

“Don’t worry, Nala.” Nakia chimed. “I’m going over there to help him. Just until she goes to bed.”

Erik looked over at Nakia, surprised at her statement. She hadn’t told them that.

Truth be told, Nala didn’t believe either of them when she asked what happened following the fallout in Niganda. She was told that they simply decided that their relationship wasn’t working out and decided to be friends. However, something about that didn’t sit right with her. She felt like there was more to the story, but she didn’t want to press.

It wasn’t her place.

“I don’t see why she can’t just stay with ya’ll.” He shook his head. “I mean, what the hell ya’ll have to have the entire damn palace vacated for? It’s so large in size that you could be in one wing and people wouldn't even know.”

T’Challa chuckled, his arm around the chair Nala sat in next to him. “If you were there, then you would most definitely know that we too are present.”

Nala gasped and smacked his leg. “T’Challa.”

Shuri turned up her nose. “I think I am going to be sick.”

“Nala,” she looked over to see that Belay was standing up. “Can I talk to you for a minute?”

She shook her head. “Sure,” Nala pecked T’Challa’s lips and readied to stand up. “I’ll be right back.”

“Okay.” He tried to hide his annoyance at Belay interrupting them, but despite his feelings toward the new King of Niganda, he had to respect that he was also now his brother-in-law.

“I really do appreciate you coming,” Nala spoke as they walked outside, the sun starting to set which indicated the approach of evening. “It means a lot to me, brother.”

“Of course,” he nodded and grabbed her hand. “We are all we have left.”

A sudden bout of sadness overcame her, forcing her head to drop. “Is it bad that a small part of me wishes they were here?”

Nala still wasn’t over the unexpected passing of her parents…..nor the demise of her sister at her hands. Her coming to terms with all of the betrayal and loss would take time.

“No,” he replied quietly, squeezing her hand. “Because you’ve always been the better person out of all of us.”

She cracked a small grin. “Let me guess….you have to leave now?”

“And the most perceptive.” He chuckled. “I wish that I could stay. Truly. However, I am still struggling to put back together what our family has spent centuries trying to-”

“Say no more,” she stopped him. “I am just happy you were able to come…..and bring what I asked you to.”

He smiled and eyed her with suspicion. “You plan on telling me just what was on that?”

She opened her mouth to coyly respond when a loud voice coming from the reception interrupted.

“All I’m saying is I ain’t never been to a wedding where a damn Panther is walking around freely and shit.”

“I know you ain’t talkin about my niece pet. Not when you walk around with damn wings on half the time looking like a fake ass Angry Bird.”

She recognized the first voice. It belonged to Sam. And the second one….well, that was obvious.

Nala rolled her eyes. “And this is why I didn’t want to serve alcohol.”

“I’d rather be a great value Angry Bird than a 99 Cent store Lack Panther.”

“99 cent? Ain’t that much how you get paid for being a Novenger.”

“Still more than how much your mama makes hitting those streets. And that’s on a good night.”

“What you just say about my mama?”

“N'Jadaka! Put that chair-” T’Challa’s enraged voice was cut off by a loud crash.

“Ooohhh! I’m telling mommy.” Bunme’s excited voice beamed as Nala shook her head.

“I better get in there,” she jumped at the sound of another loud bang.

“Great Hanuman, now this is a celebration!”

“Shut up, husband!”

Following what ended up being an all-out brawl, several people getting ejected, the reception resumed without much interruption aside from the cleaning crew having to come straighten up.

However, the celebration eventually came to an end, the bride and groom thanking all of the attendees for coming, Bunme taking the microphone from her father to yell, “I had lotsa’ fun.”

That definitely ended everything on a high note.

“Look, how often am I supposed to feed it again? And is it even housebroken?” Erik asked as he prepared to leave with Shuri and Bunme who would be staying with him while Nala and T’Challa celebrated their honeymoon in a palace that would be all theirs for the next few days.

Nala rolled her eyes. “Bun will help you with Little Kitty.”

“Little Kitty?” Erik’s face contorted into a mixture of disgust and confusion. “I was talking about the kid, not Garfield. Besides, the cat staying here.”

“No, she is not,” T’Challa informed, tightening his hold around Nala’s waist. “Little Kitty goes with Bunme.”

“What?” Erik’s eyes widened slightly as he shook his head. “Hell no. It’s bad enough I gotta watch lil’ bit and Shuri-”

“I don’t need a babysitter,” Shuri commented as she walked out with three suitcases.

“Hold on,” Erik stopped her, looking from her to her luggage. “What is all that?”

Shuri shrugged. “My stuff. My tech, clothes, projects-”

“It’s only going to be for a few days.”

“I know. That’s why I packed lightly.”

Nala and T’Challa snickered at Erik’s face.

“Come on, Little Kitty.” Bunme came rushing out with a small pink suitcase while becking her companion to come along.

“Now see,” Erik clapped and pulled Bunme into his side, his hand on her shoulder. “This is why she’s my favorite niece.”

Bunme frowned and looked up. “I’m your only niece, Uncle Scar.”

“Quiet, too short.”

“She knows how to pack. Unlike some people.” He blatantly threw shade at his cousin who simply had a small smirk on her face.

“Oh really?” Shuri looked toward the area where Bunme exited and beamed as she saw two palace guards carrying out luggage.

“What the hell?” Erik stammered. “What is all that?”

“That, my cousin, would be Bunme and Little Kitty’s items,” T’Challa replied calmly as Nala hid her face in his chest to conceal her amusement.

Erik snapped his head to look at Bunme. “Lil’ bit?”

The little princess simply shrugged. “I got lotsa’ stuff, Uncle Scar.”

Erik muttered angrily as he took Bunme’s suitcase from her to bring it to his car, letting the little princess say goodbye to her parents. Nala instructed her little girl to be on her best behavior while T’Challa simply enforced that if she needed to call them for any reason, not to hesitate, and they would come to get her right away.

“Hey,” Nala stopped when she noticed something. “Where’s your doll, Bun?”

“I left her here,” she shrugged.

T’Challa’s eyes squinted in confusion. “You always have her with you.”

“Well, I don’t need her anymore.”

Nala raised a brow. “You don’t? Why?”

“Well,” she looked down at the ground and played with her fingers. “One time, grandma told me that I could prefend’ that my daddy gave her to me since I don’t have a daddy and never would.” Nala shut her eyes...she never knew her mother said that to Bunme. “But now I do, so I don't need her.” Bunme finished with a wide smile of happiness.

Before her parents could respond, Bunme ambushed them with a hug, telling them she loved them and ran off to the car.

“Aye. Don’t be playing around i—is that chocolate? Oh hell no. There is no eating in this—did you just waste something already? How is that even possible!”

“Are you sure it is a good idea to leave her with Erik?” T’Challa asked with an expression of worry. “He seems a bit….overwhelmed.”

Nala shook her head. “He will be fine.” She grabbed his hand and tried to pull him. “Now come, husband, we have a honeymoon to enjoy.”

♔ ♔ ♔ ♔ ♔

It was damn near 1AM before Bunme finally went off to sleep. Nala was right.

That ice cream did keep her awake.

“Hey. Thanks for coming over,” Erik thanked Nakia as she readied to leave.

“Of course,” she smiled weakly. “I can come over tomorrow too if you’d-”

“Naw. That’ okay.” He interrupted, Nakia’s smile faltering. “I think Shuri and I can handle it.”

“Oh,” Nakia tried to not look too disappointed. “Well, if you change your mind...you can just….you know.”

“I know,” he spoke plainly. “Th-”

“I am leaving, N'Jadaka,” she said quietly, looking down at her clutch in her hands.

Erik furrowed his brows in confusion. “I know….”

“No,” she took a deep breath. “You do not understand….I am leaving Wakanda.”

His shoulders dropped. “W-what?”

“I’ve accepted a full-time position at the new outreach center in the states-”

“Why?”

She licked her lips. “It is a good jo-”

“Bullshit,” he spat. “This is me, Nakia. Don’t lie to me.”

The War Dog looked up at him and averted her eyes. “I-I cannot stay here any longer. The memories...they are too much….but most importantly? I cannot bear to be around you when I know you blame me.”

He froze, his heart stopping. “What? Nakia, I don’t-”

“Yes, you do.” He heard her voice crack and saw her eyes water. “I know you do because...I also blame me.”

His eyes shut as he shook his head. “It wasn’t...it wasn’t your f-”

“If I had just kept my appointment, then I-I would have known. I wouldn’t have gone and we-we would still have our baby.” She broke down crying, Erik instantly bringing her into his arms as she wept.

“I don’t blame you, Nakia, and I’m sorry if I made you think I do. I just….” he also felt a tear slip out. “I don’t know how to deal with this.”

“Neither do I,” she quietly confessed and pulled away, wiping at her eyes. “And that is precisely why I think we need time apart.”

His chest tightened. “Nakia, that’s not-”

“I have to go,” she quickly grabbed her coat and hurried out of the room, not giving him a chance to finish his statement….or comfort her.

Erik stood there for a good ten minutes before falling back on his sofa, his jaw trembling as he fought the tears. He knew that things between him and Nakia had been tense since her miscarriage, but he never foresaw this coming.

His heart ached as a once everpresent emotional void started to sneak its way back in. He wanted to run after her, to tell her that she needed to stay so that they could work through things together, and stop acting like they both hadn’t lost their child, but...he couldn’t.

No.

All he could do was follow his gut, his gut that had been suggesting he do something that he’d been thinking about ever since Nala’s arrival to Wakanda.

The prince pulled out his iPhone that he used to talk to his mother and scrolled through his list of contacts. His finger hovered over the number, debating if he should follow through. Ultimately, he did.

Of course, she didn’t answer, but that didn’t stop him from leaving a message.

“Hey…..it’s me…..I know it’s been a while…..and that we agreed to no communication…...but uh…..I need to talk to you.” A beat. “I think I want to find our daughter.”

♔ ♔ ♔ ♔ ♔

“Bast woman, would you hurry up? How long does it take to get naked?”

Nala rolled her eyes at T’Challa’s impatient voice from their bedroom. She looked at her bare face, curls that were in a messy bun, and body that was clad in only one of his white shirts before walking out.

T’Challa’s face fell when he saw her. “Why do I see clothes?”

She rolled her eyes. “Can you please take your mind from out of the gutter just for a little while?”

He scowled as she climbed on top of him, her arms around his shoulders. “What is a little while? A minute? Two?”

“You have problems,” she muttered, reaching over for the remote which laid on the bed. “I-I have something for you.”

“Yes,” his hands slid under her shirt to squeeze her ass. “You do.”

“T’Challa,” she slapped him away and moved to get off his lap. “I am serious.”

“Fine, Nala, what is it?” She wanted to curse him out for disregarding her but decided against it.

“My wedding gift for you,” she said quietly.

He frowned. “But I thought we were waiting until I can show you yours on Monday?”

“No, that’s what you thought.” She corrected, moving behind him and resting her chin on his shoulder. “This….this can’t wait.”

T’Challa continued to frown with confusion as Nala reached to turn the TV on, the black screen that only read Part One prompting him to ask her what she was showing him. But, before she could answer, loud cries filled their room.

The cries of a baby.

“What….” he trailed off as video footage started to play, footage that showed a sobbing and sweating Nala holding a tiny baby in her arms whose loud lungs continued to make their presence known.

“Hi, baby.” She cried. “Oh, you’re so beautiful.” She held the baby’s hand, lightly playing with her fingers. “My beautiful, Bunme.”

The screen flashed Month One before the video transitioned to a smiling Nala sitting in a rocking chair, breastfeeding Bunme, burping her, changing her diaper, and focusing on just Bunme as she laid in her crib, peacefully sleeping.

Nala kissed the back of T’Challa’s shoulder as he watched with tears in his eyes more clips of Bunme’s beginnings. “I recorded all the way up until she was three.” She spoke quietly. “Her birth, first steps, first words, all of it….I have on here, and no, it’s not the same as being there but-” she quieted as his hand reached back to lightly caress the back of her head.

“It is more than I could have ever asked for,” he matched her tone, clearly overcome with emotion. “Thank you.”

She closed her eyes. “There’s no need to thank me.” Nala took a small breath. “But I do have something else I wish to show you.”

When she went to grab the remote, he stopped her, his eyes pleading. “Please….not yet.”

She smiled softly and kissed his nose. “Trust me.”

He looked hesitant but let her continue, Nala hitting a button that skipped to the end.

Again, the screen was black, but this time….it said Part Two before his newly crowned Queen and Princess showed up.

They were sitting in his bed, laughing among themselves.

“Okay,” Nala laughed. “Family.”

“Us!” Bunme threw her hands up.

“Three.”

“Four!”

“Boy.”

“Girl!”

“When.”

“Now!” Bunme shouted before throwing her body against Nala, the two laughing together as the footage faded out.

T’Challa’s smile was permanent despite his obvious confusion.

Again, the screen was black before a swift swishing sound entered the room accompanied by a couple of beeping sounds.

Nala shut her eyes, focusing in on her task before opening them, her irises completely white.

T’Challa’s heart stopped beating as the picture slowly came into view.

It was Nala, laying on a hospital bed, shirt pulled up to her chest, Bunme standing on a stool next to her, hugging her while she cried.

“There it is,” he was frozen solid as he saw a nurse was moving something over Nala’s stomach as she used the other hand to point to the screen. “That…...believe it or not, is your baby.” Nala cried harder. “Congratulations, your highness. You’re six weeks pregnant.”

“Don’t cry, mommy.” Bunme tried to comfort Nala, not realizing that they were tears of joy. “This is awesome! And Daddy and I will help you with Little Baby.”

T’Challa spun around, his eyes immediately going onto her stomach, grasping her sides.

“They just detected a heartbeat last week, so I’ve been blocking it from you. That’s why you didn’t pick up on it.” She explained gently, answering the question she knew he was burning to ask. “And I’m sorry you weren’t the first to know. Bun walked in on me throwing up last week and got all scared, so I had to tell her. She thought I was dying.” She chuckled nervously.

“You’re pregnant?” He finally spoke, looking up at her with watery eyes. “Truly?

She smiled, feeling her own eyes water as she cupped his face. “We are pregnant, my love.” He too shut his lids, resting his head against her stomach, listening in on the small but clear heartbeat. “And this time…...you will be with me every step of the way.”

“I love you,” he breathed against her, tightening his hold around her, clutching as though letting go meant losing her.

She craned down to kiss the top of his hair, “I love you too, T’Challa.” A beat. Forever and always.”

♔ ♔ ♔ ♔ ♔

Meanwhile, as the king and queen engaged in passionate lovemaking to celebrate the upcoming arrival of their next heir, another member of the royal family laid in bed, staring at the ceiling, waiting for her Kimoyo bracelet to ding, alerting her that her results were in.

Shuri tried to sleep. She wanted to sleep, but she couldn’t.

She was just too nervous.

When the vibration went off against her chest, she could barely pull herself together to open up the lab work. It took five minutes just for her to remember the password for the encrypted documents before she actually got them to open.

However…..when she did….she almost wished she’d given up on trying to access them.

The king and queen’s child would not be the only addition to the royal family after all.

As Shuri cried, Erik worried, and Nala and T’Challa celebrated, Ramonda laid on the floor of her “prison cell,” which was really a house on the other side of Wakanda, her new and permanent residence following a guilty verdict for her crimes against Wakanda.

In some senses, it was poetic. While the Udakus were gaining two (possibly three, if everything panned out for Erik) new members of their family…..they were losing one.

For Ramonda, Queen Mother and former wife of the late King T’Chaka, was dead.

365 Marvel Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…

January 15th - Gentle

The heroic X-Man known as Gentle is Nezhno Abidemi. Nezhno was born in the secluded nation of Wakanda, the product of a brief tryst between his Wakandan mother and an outsider from Russia. Nezhno was born during a time where outsiders were highly distrusted in Wakanda and his parentage caused Nezhno to be shunned and isolated by his community.

Nezhno is a Mutant whose X-gene manifested in early adolescence. He discovered that he could substantially increase his size and muscle mass at will and that doing so bestowed him greatly enhanced strength and durability. The process caused a terrible strain on his body and he suffered from chronic pain in both his original and enlarged form. To help ease his suffering and prevent it from intensifying, Wakandan scientists treated Nezhno with a series of Vibraniam infused tattoos that covered large swaths of his body. Although this did slightly ease his condition, Nezhno continued to suffer from a great deal of pain which he tried to cope with through meditation and quiet stoicism.

On the recommendation of Ororo Munroe, the then Queen of Wakanda, Nezhno traveled to America to become a student at the Xavier Institute where he might better learn to use and control his Mutant powers. As a member of the younger generation of X-Men in training, Nezhno’s quiet demeanor and pacifist notions earned him the nickname ‘Gentle’ (a name that would eventually become his hero alias).

Following a tumultuous time at the Xavier Institute, Nezhno returned to Wakanda. Doctors examined his body and found that his condition worsened during his time in the United States and, therefore, he needed more tattoos. All he ever wanted was to be accepted by his own people and had hoped that during his absence the Wakandans changed their opinion of him. Unfortunately, Nezhno quickly ascertained that everything remained the same and even his mother, whom he hadn't seen for many years, berated him for returning to Wakanda. Once again rejected by his country, Gentle finally realized that the only people who ever accepted him were the X-Men, and regretted that he pushed away those who tried to be his friends.

These negative emotions allowed the Shadow King to possess Gentle's body and use it to kill the soul reader B'Chaku. Nezhno was arrested, but Storm freed him from prison, believing that he could not commit murder. Unfortunately, the Shadow King was able to take possession of T'Challa and declared that Storm and Gentle were traitors and ordered for their detention. At first Nezhno was ready to surrender, and to be executed for his crime, but Storm forced him to fight and flee. In the end, they managed to defeat the Shadow King and saved not only Wakanda, but also the X-Men. After that, Nezhno decided to return to America.

Not long thereafter, Gentle accepted a position on Jean Grey’s X-Men Red squadron. During his time with the team, Jean offered to use her telepathic powers to see if she might ease Nezhno’s difficulties with chronic pain. Therein the two discovered that the pain he suffered when he used his powers was not tied to them, but was actually a subconscious mechanism to prevent himself from using his powers due to past traumas and a fear of hurting others. Working through these matters, Nezhno’s difficulties with pain diminished significantly.

More recently, Gentle has joined the Mutant nation of Krakoa. The hero first appeared in the pages of New X-Men Vol. 2 #23 (2006).

Chapter 3: Old Friends, Old Times

Summary: Princess Shuri and King T'Challa visit the X Mansion to help develop new technology to test Rose’s mutation. Shuri and Rose discuss a mutual friend the Reader didn’t know they shared.

Logan found me sitting on the mansion roof. It was my favorite place to sit when I needed to be alone. He knew, of course, that rarely applied to him. Since my spare room here was in the attic, Logan and I spent many nights up here star gazing and wondering if it was possible for either of us to lead happy lives. Damaged people know they’re damaged. They also know how to find each other as we understand each other better than others. And who to better understand a 450 year old “Mother Nature” like mutant that was almost killed by her own parents than an 138 year old “animal like” mutant with anger issues from being used as a weapon almost all his life? Could anyone really blame me for hoping my mutation wouldn’t kill Logan so we could stay together?

Logan settled down next to me and didn’t say a word. He knew that when I was ready, I would speak first. It was the same with him. We were so much a like in how we dealt with our feelings. Another thing that linked us. Behind us, the sun felt great on my back while sitting on the snow covered roof. True, I never really got cold. But it’s hard not to appreciate the change of temperatures or the changes of season. It’s the little things that made each day more bearable.

I finally sighed and Logan straightened up a little to show he was all ears. “As pissed as I am at Wilson, it has crossed my mind before. What if we’re not compatible? What if the only reason why my mutation hasn’t killed you is because of your healing factor? And that’s why you got sick last time we were together?”

Logan pulled out a cigar, considered it, then placed it back in his pocket. “I’m sure that Jean and that blue fur-ball will be able to figure out why your mutation…um…”

“Kills people? You can say it, Logan. I know what happens. I’m not like Anna Marie. I’m old enough to accept my shitty powers.”

“Ok, fine. Kills people. Hank says it may be some weird protection function. Like how some animals in the wild use poison or venom.”

“Logan, they do that when they feel threatened. Not when they have sex.”

“True, but you said it was the earth that saved you. Maybe it still is.”

I cocked an eyebrow. “I’m sorry. Did you just say that the earth gave me the power to kill people when I have sex with them to protect me? Logan, if that was the case - and holy fuck if so, that is such a stupid reason - why would it only go into effect after I have been with the person more than twice?”

Logan shook his head. “No, I over heard Jean, Charles, and Hank talk about it.”

“What did I say about eavesdropping?”

“Look, you can’t control your heightened hearing anymore than I can.” I nodded and he continued, “they were saying it may be an evolution thing. Like making sure your genes were only mixed with the best.”

“Well, that would make sense…..if I could still have kids. Now it’s just a giant fuck you from the universe. And again, why does it take so long to kick in? Some longer than others?”

Logan looked me over at that. “You wanna tell me something, kiddo?”

“Logan, you know we haven’t been consistent these past 100 years. Plus, I am 300 and some change years older than you.”

“Right, I sometimes forget that. Like now when I actually look older than you. Still, you wanna talk about them?”

“The ones before, I can’t even remember their faces. But the one after…..I only went with him because I believed you were dead. I knew about Stryker’s experiments and how mutants were never seen again. I mourned you for two decades. Then I came across this pilot. Originally I wasn’t going to bother, but something about him reminded me of you. He was ambitious, talking about going into the CIA after he left the air force. We knew each other for five years, but only together for a month. Then he got really ill. He claims it was the flu, but I wasn’t taking any chances. I left him a note and never looked back. And before you ask, no. He knew I was a mutant, but thought my only mutation was super strength and speed. He never knew what else I could do. Including my ‘protection’. I was a fool to forget about that. Especially since I have had Charles and Hank working on making this stupid test since the 60’s. I have absolutely no idea if he survived.”

“What was his name?”

“Does it matter? Even if he had survived, it’s you I want.”

Logan considered that for a moment. “They say it may take a few times because your….condition may not try to test them right away. Either that or it is slowly poisoning their system.”

“Well, that makes me feel shit tons better.”

Before he could continue, the sound of a jet approached us. Looking up, I could see the hover craft of Wakanda soaring over the trees.

“Looks like we got company.”

“Good. Shuri’s peppiness is so damn contagious. Maybe I can forget that I may lose you for a while.”

“You’ll never lose me, kiddo.”

“I hope so.”

We climbed down from the roof and I raced across the expansive lawn to meet the landing jet. Princess be damned, Shuri raced out of the back of that plane and practically tackled me to the ground. We laughed our greeting as her brother, King T'Challa walked over. I tried to gather myself to give a proper greeting. T'Challa waved me off.

“Please, Rose. You don’t need to do that. You have been a friend of Wakanda for far too long.”

“Making fun of my age, are we?” I said with a straight face.

Shuri and I giggled as T'Challa began to stutter. Behind him, Okoye laughed. “She was joking, my King!”

T'Challa blushed at that as Shuri pulled out a long, skinny box. Holding it out for me, she lifted the lid. “I brought you a gift!”

“Aw, Shuri! That’s so sweet! What is it? More of your country’s awesome food?”

“No, not this time. I invented something to help channel your powers.” The people of Wakanda were the few on the planet that new of ALL of my powers. Ever since I accidentally stumbled into their country (Those jungle holograms are very convincing!) and helped a former King with a problem, I was always welcomed in their country. I never visited as often as I would like. In fact, the last time was when King T'Chaka was still alive.

I held the box Shuri had shoved into my hands as she opened the lid to reveal two midnight black gauntlets. They were clearly made of vibranium and would easily cover most of my forearms, all of my hands, but stop short of my fingers. Patterns were carved all over the top of them. I looked at her and cocked an eyebrow. “Been to Themyscira lately?”

Shuri laughed at me. “No, I didn’t steal these from Diana. But I did get the idea from them. Put them on!”

I handed the box to Logan and slipped each gauntlet on, making sure to secure the ties. “Ok, now what?”

“Bang them together!”

“Ok, now I KNOW you stole these from Wonder Woman!”

“Just do it!”

Balling up my fists, I crossed my arms in front of me, but parallel to the ground and banged them together. Instantly material began to spread out of the gauntlets and cover my body. In less than a minute, I had a black vibranium outfit that stopped at my neck, covered all of my clothes, and gave me boots to match. All as one solid piece. Suddenly, I felt more in-tuned with the planet. I could feel every tree sway, cloud float, animal sneak by, hear even the farthest creek babble.

“What the hell?!”

“Do you like it? I found a way to channel your powers in a suit! This will help you focus your powers more! Try it!”

When a princess asks you to do something, you do it. So I allowed my hair and eyes to change as I conjured a lightning bolt. My eyes shown a silvery blue as a bolt fell from the sky and hit my gauntlets. Watching the lightning dance around my arms, all I could think about was the next time I saw Thor. Training was about to become more intense. I pointed my hand and the lightning released and zapped Colossus’ prize rose bush. Whoops.

I quickly ran over and went to work fixing the flowers as I heard Colossus cry from a balcony. Crap. “Sorry, Piotr!”

Meanwhile Shuri couldn’t stop laughing as she pointed her camera at me. Great, that will be all over Wakanda by the end of the day. I tried to move on.

“So tell me, what is new? I’m so sorry I couldn’t be there for your father’s funeral. He was a great king.”

“It’s alright. Father would have understood. It’s been very crazy lately. I adopted two broken white boys to fix, T'Challa’s cousin tried to take over, and then we had that alien invasion!”

“I remember hearing about that. Over some stones? Glad you guys finally got it resolved.” I shook my head then stopped. “Wait, what? You adopted two broken white boys? What have I missed?”

“Oh yeah! One was James Buchanan Barnes, aka the Winter Soldier. Now known as the White Wolf. I had to unscramble his head and make him a new arm.” I knew of the Winter Soldier. We had unfortunately crossed paths a decade past. Thank God for mutations. “And the other was CIA Agent, Everett Ross. He was shot in the spine saving Nakia.”

At that my gaze snapped from my new gauntlets to Shuri’s face. Logan had never paid more attention to me then at that moment. “I’m sorry, did you say Everett Ross?”

“Oh yes! He was a big help in the battle against T'Challa’s cousin! Shot down all the rogue planes trying to escape and barely made it out of my lab before it was blown up!”

I shook my head at that. “Of course he would almost get himself killed after someone saved his life. The man never changes.”

“You know him?”

“Well, not anymore. We were….friends back in the 90’s. When he flew in the air force.” I could feel Logan’s eyes bore into the side of my head as I looked to the ground. Of course, the one name I wasn’t going to give him, Shuri just brought up. Even if unintentional, it still felt like a kick in the stomach. Though I was happy to know that Everett had survived not only a shot in the back, but my mutation as well. “I’m glad to hear he finally got to work for the CIA like he always wanted.”

Shuri was too quiet, so I risked a glance at her. She looked like she just discovered a new element. There was no other way to describe it. She was shocked and overjoyed at the same time.

“What?”

“Oh my god! You were the one he was talking about!”

“What?!”

“While he was passed out in my lab, waiting to finish healing. He kept muttering your name! But I had no idea it was you! I just thought it was a coincidence!”

“WHAT?!”

“Oh my god this is amazing! He wouldn’t talk about you, just saying you were the one that got away! He’s going to be so happy to know you’ll be at the compound with him!”

“The one that go- WAIT, WHAT?! WHAT DO YOU MEAN HE’S GONNA BE AT THE COMPOUND?!” My voice had now reached an octave that made dogs cry. Logan winced considerably.

“HE CAN TAKE THE TEST AFTER WE FINISH BUILDING IT!”

“Ok, stop right there! No fucking way in hell is he taking the test!” Shuri looked at me in shock. I pointed at Logan. “The whole point of the test is to make sure I can’t kill off the man next to me!”

Shuri’s eyes got even wider as she realized the man standing next to me (Which, she was never introduced to this entire time. My fault.) was the one the test was being built for. And she just blurted out that the man I dated while I thought Logan was dead still held a candle for me. Welp, the next year should be nice and awkward.

“I need a drink. And to talk to Charles again.” I turned around and left for the mansion, leaving a very confused party behind me.

Protect them

Pairing: Steve Rogers X Reader.

Word count: 1168 words.

Summary: The Sokovia Accords sought to separate families of superheroes, they would do anything to protect the one they had formed.

Warnings: Mention of death, nothing explicit.

A/N: Flashback is in italics.

The reader is a mutant.

This fic is a kind of a mix between the Civil War (comic and movie) and The Gifted.

All of you had read all the Sokovia Accords, basically, the governments requiring that all children whose both parents were superheroes be turned over to the government for their upbringing, and ultimately they were not going to allow their family to be separated.

Not to mention that the guidelines established that the children would be under the care of a specific area of the government and that the parents would not be allowed to have any type of contact with them.

"Oh Steve is horrible, the Sentinels took Valeria and Franklin from Dr. Richards and Sue, I could not bear to do the same to our daughters," you said almost on the verge of tears.

The twins slept peacefully in their crib, in a little while they would wake up hungry.

"They won't, I won't allow it, if it's necessary to keep them hidden we will," Steve assured you.

You and Steve, along with their two young daughters had been on the run for the past few weeks as they had refused to sign the Accords.

Ross affirmed that the babies had powers, something that not even you knew since they were barely six months old, however, the man assured it because you are mutant.

As soon as Steve alerted you to the situation, you immediately took the things you thought were necessary. You needed to get out of the place before they came for you.

You had gone to the place that had been left that would be their shelter in case an emergency happened, you had made sure that nobody followed you, you felt how the paranoia increased, you were going to protect them even if it cost you your life, in the refuge you were still nervous, you couldn't communicate with anyone in case the lines were tapped; as soon as your husband arrived, you threw yourself into his arms

"What happened?" You asked him.

"We could barely run away, wait I want to introduce you to someone," Steve replied.

Steve went to the hall and practically dragged his friend.

"This is Bucky," Steve introduced him.

Barnes's discomfort was too noticeable, he was probably afraid of hurting someone.

"I'm Y/N, Steve's wife," you introduced yourself.

Bucky smiled shyly. You went for the little ones to present them.

"They are our daughters," you said.

You showed the two babies to Bucky, who looked fearfully at them and didn't want to scare them.

"If you want you can carry them," you offered.

"No, no, I don't want to harm them," he said in a fearful voice.

You looked at Steve, who gestured to you that everything was fine. Then they began to tell you everything that had happened.

“Where will we go? We can't stay here “you questioned.

Probably someone would find them and hand them over to the authorities.

"Someone you trust is going to help us, Buck too," Steve said.

You looked at it doubtfully, ultimately you didn’t want to lose their daughters

“Who?”

"Someone who made a mistake, I assure you, is on our side."

You still didn’t fully control your powers, just on your 14th birthday the first power appeared, eventually, others powers manifested; The worst day of your life was when your family had decided to go on a picnic in the forest, there they believed that no one would find them, your parents were teaching you how to use them.

A group of Purifiers had found them and began to attack them; your parents had managed to get you to escape, you spent a few hours wandering inside the mouth although you knew the place very well, so you had not lost yourself, you returned to where you had been with your parents; The Purifiers are gone, but the scene was terrible and rugged; on the floor lay the bodies of your parents inert and covered in blood you were horrified.

You got up and went back a few steps, you had to run away before the Purifiers would return or find you before the Brotherhood appeared your parents had warned never to join them

They had also given you an address to go to in case something like this happened, you knew perfectly what to do in such a situation, you wiped away the tears that fell down your cheeks and you went to the place trying not to attract attention to get safely, you knocked on the door of the address, as soon as Fury opened and saw you he understood what had happened, now he was going to protect you.

You still have nightmares about that moment. The fact that these Accords now exist meant that the same thing could happen to your daughters as to you, obviously the mere thought of that possibility distressed you.

You didn’t feel completely comfortable in Wakanda, the concern was constant, you felt that at any time they were going to betray you and someone from the government went to take your babies from you, you also missed being able to visit your parents' grave

Not to mention that also shortly after arriving at the place you had a premonition, it seemed about fifteen years in the future, it seemed an ideal world, and your daughters without fear were using their powers in the courtyard of the house where they lived.

You didn’t know how you could achieve a future such as happiness and with your family.

You looked out the window while little girls were asleep, all those ideas assaulted your head without rest, and your true feelings were reflected in your face even if you tried to hide them.

The damn Accords and the hatred that people still had for mutants were ruining your life and your family again.

“Doll, are you okay?” Steve asked as he entered the room.

You were shocked, you hadn't even heard when he entered.

"I am worried," you admitted.

"Why?" He asked.

“Who are we if we can't protect them?”

"We have to protect them," he assured you.

“How?

“We will have to leave here for security, T'Challa says that he will continue to appear to support the Accords, he will deny that all of us who refuse to sign were ever here, but it is dangerous for us to continue in this place, however, we will continue to communicate” the super-soldier explained.

“Where will we go? I don't understand what you want to do? "You asked.

"Some country where they have not signed, everything will be fine, we will find a way to go unknowns," he replied.

“Sure?”

"It's for the best, we'll do whatever it takes, whatever it takes," he said.

"It has any sense, Steve, we're in great danger."

You were feeling too nervous and fearful about it.

"Let me take care of this for you," he asked you.

"You are the only thing I have."

"Nothing is going to separate us, trust me," Steve insisted.

“I always love you”.

"Everything will be fine, I promise you, I love you."

Stark Tower Layout

Lady Death: This is a little snippet I did which originally began as a reference for some future snippets I’ve been working on for a Loki x Reader (Ice Mutant).

It’s been months since Thanos’s defeat and Tony Stark has built a second Stark Tower for the Avengers in Brazil, deep in the forest. It’s built similarly to the tower in New York, but has less of a skyscraper feel. The outside is coated in a reflective material manufactured similarly to the camouflage used to hide the kingdom of Wakanda and was specially developed with Shuri’s help. This feature, however, is only to keep it from being seen from above by satellites as the facility itself is not in a secret location.

1st Floor: The Entrance

As anyone could expect, the entrance to Stark Tower is incredible and, simply put, extraordinary. Entering the main floor, the first thing visitors see is an arc reactor the size of a car along with words illuminating across the top in bright fluorescent “Avengers Assemble”. Tony said it was cheesy but it puts a smile on Steve's face every time he sees it. Elegant glass staircases on either side of the arc reactor lead up to the second story. It is all completely open and bright with massive windows that let in the brilliant sun rays, even showing a beautiful sky when it was taking thanks to specially manufactured glass invented by Shuri.

2nd Floor: Tourist Center

Stark had specifically chosen to create a tourist center in the lowest levels of his complex for the simple reason that he knew the Avengers needed to maintain face (and Pepper insisted it was a good idea to keep up appearances without holding press conferences on the regular basis). They were icons, symbols, and most of all heros. All profits made go towards hundreds of different charities around the world, usually those pertaining to Avenger related missions. Once of the most popular destinations at Stark Tower for visitors is the world renowned gift shop that houses random images taken of the Avengers with unrelated daily quotes they have made. The most notable include: Black Widow “I can’t, I’m afraid of spiders”, Captain America “You can’t do the fondue unless you have protection”, Spiderman “Oh, geeze guys, I don’t know”, Ironman “ Excelsior “

3rd Floor: Accounting Department

Because a building this large, this full, and this advanced requires money. It is nearly entirely made up of Tony's own pocket change, but sometimes a grateful nation or wealthy family the Avengers saved will make a donation to housing (but that secretly gets donated back to the community around the Stark facility, such as orphanages and hospitals).

4th Floor: Loading Dock and Med Bay

This is the floor where most of the Avengers tech is kept (beside things that are personal such as Sam's wings). It also houses a well stocked armory that contains anything as weak as bean bag shotgun shells (used for low level crooks) to much more lethal high caliber assault rifles (for more complicated cases). Any weapon repair would happen here, as well as any medical treatment that the Avengers could need. It can be used in emergency cases for the rest of the workers at the tower but so far that has not been necessary.

5th Floor: Training Rooms

This floor contains a fully loaded gym, a jacuzzi tub, steam room, and stall showers that are accessible to everyone at the tower. There were however, rooms separated for special training that was only used by the Avengers that included a holographic simulator that, while not as physical as the microbots, could use a projection on an android dummy, perfect for one on one training when you don't have a partner. As a joke, Tony had programmed the only reflection the dummy was capable of to be Secretary of state Thaddeus Ross. As an extra joke, someone (no one knows who but suspects Bruce) reprogrammed the boys to instead show Tony, repeating sarcastic comments and rolling his eyes. Steve said he had never had such a great workout partner.

6th Floor: The Simulator

The simulator, which takes up the entire sixth floor, requires special access passes not every Avenger has. This floor is most notably used for team training and uses microbots to create simulations of different villains and scenarios. Only Bruce or Tony themselves are capable to turning on the simulator because of its complexities. This rule came after a near disastrous event with Sam nearly creating a lethal replica of Thanos in with the Simulated Microbots, an event Steve brings up regularly. “You’re just mad cause the giant eggplant kicked your ass. Again,” Sam would snapback.

7th Floor: Avenger Academy(because Tony couldn’t think of a better thing to call it)

The classrooms are more technical than academic, but make for a good show for when Aunt May allows Peter to come stay at the tower. It has several computers set up for any of the Avengers team or Stark Tower’s employee to use. There is also a small library tucked away, because while Tony insisted everything be electronic, Pepper thought some of the tower inhabitants could use the nostalgia of a good hardback book.

8th Floor: Individual apartments (Dubbed the Geriatric Floor) Bucky, Steve

Because, let's face it, they're lost without each other so of course they're on the same floor. They insisted on having the lowest level apartments in the complex so “If someone attacks” they would be the first defense. Their apartments are very similar in style, with simple amenities, painted in patriotic colors, and decorated with several old pictures and framed special news articles the old school men enjoyed. Even the electronics in their apartments are simplified, with Friday always there to help the boys with any questions they had for new age tech.

9th Floor: Individual apartments (Dubbed the Experiments-gone-wrong Floor) Wanda and Vision, Bruce

Wanda and Vision were apprehensive about moving into the tower at first, but once they officially had their apartment set up, they couldn't imagine calling anywhere else “Home”. Vision especially enjoys Bruce being across the hall whenever he is in the mood for discussions, usually ending with some bizarre, other world innovative ideas that they would run by Tony when he comes by the tower. Wanda has come up to join young and Nat in your late night lounging.

10th Floor: Individual apartments(Dubbed the Deadly Women Floor) Reader, Natasha

You weren't sure what living on the same floor with Black Widow would be like, but it turned out the two of you made fast friends. It was nothing for you to go over to her apartment in the late hours of the night to enjoy some wine and girl talk, or for her to come by so you could both binge watch murder mystery shows, almost always challenging each other to guess the murderer by the end of the shows. The two of you go on a girls’ nights out with Wanda and Pepper every other weekend, usually spending your time comparing the men you had to put up with on a regular basis. Everyone agrees Pepper is a saint for dealing with Tony. On rare occasions, Gamora and Shuri join you, but those stories never get shared with the rest of the team. There is a rumor, while out enjoying one of these legendary evenings, your small group overthrew an evil dictator and liberated a country in the throws of civil war, but that never made the news so no one could confirm it. Viva la revolution.

11th Floor: Guest rooms: It is strategically located in the middle of the avengers team so they are secured at all times.

Most often used for Clint and his family during family friendly events such as Christmas and Thanksgiving. Everyone, including Scott and his daughter,come every New Year to watch Stark light up the sky with his endless supply of iron suits. Dr. Strange has also stayed, but only after a party since he is usually plastered and goes around asking guests if they would like to watch him conjure a demon. So far the answer has been no but Clint's kids have asked him to pull a rabbit out of his hat. He normally goes to bed after the jokes are made. The Guardians have stayed once after a party, but no one is allowed to talk about that night. Ever. T'challa and Shuri come to every single party and even the tower has, but it always ends the same way: the brother and sister in a head to head match on one of the many competitive games in Sam's apartment. And every single time, Shuri wins at the last second. Peter Parker comes during family events with his Aunt May, but has been known to sneak into the tower during the more adult parties. He has even started a tradition of “Movie Night” where they set up a projector screen on the balcony and play movies (usually big name classics that Peter annoyingly quotes halfway through, but every once in a while they play The Notebook because Clint cries every. Single. Time).

12th Floor: Individual apartments (Dubbed the Bachelor Pad) Sam, Thor, Loki (newly moved in)

Sam and Thor always got along well and once they found something they enjoyed in common, they became quite the unexpected besties. Turned out they both enjoyed video games. Sam keeps an assortment of gaming consoles that he regularly plays through with the god of thunder between missions (and anyone else that dares challenge their gaming skills). Sam was, however, less than thrilled when Loki took the apartment across the hall from him. He has a hard time getting along with the god of mischief and they would constantly bicker, a fact that was not made better when Loki consecutively defeated him and Thor at Super Smash Brothers. Loki tends to either stay locked away in his room, but every once in a while he will sneak away to the library.

13th Floor: Tony Stark’s Closet (named by Pepper)

It’s really more of a workshop for Tony's suits but Pepper considers it Tony's closet (and was quite adamant that they were not to be kept on their living foor). It also houses the main lab. Tony only allows full access to Bruce, Vision and Shuri because he thinks any other Avenger may “mess up the intricacies of the numerous sensitive technological advances” he has made in that lab. Steve doesn't take the secrecy personally, just makes comments that they better not be working on an Ultron 2.0 (he is extremely proud of this 21st century tech joke).

14th Floor: Tony and Pepper’s Penthouse

This is where the Avenger’s have their major get together. It opens up to a wrap around balcony and is the only access to the rooftop Helipad, which is mostly for Tony and Pepper's personal use when getting to and from Stark Industries in New York. Though they don't live at the tower full time, Pepper come at least once a week to check on things. Tony comes so often it's easy to forget he doesn't live there. He has been known to come in the early morning hours to work on new suits, but Pepper doesn't know that.

Floors located under the compound:

Garage: where every type of vehicle you could imagine is stored, nearly all of them donning the Avengers logo. There are anything from motorcycles (including a special edition Harley-Davidson RL 45 Steve picked got for Bucky), ATVs, cars, trucks, and one massive speed jet used to transport the whole team. The garage is only accessibly to the Avengers team and has a massive ramp that opens up 100 meters away from the normal front entrance of the tower.

Basement: Located an extra 50 meters below the garage, no one ventures this low in the tower. It is used to mostly house old tech Tony has developed, unused suits/weapons the team has no use for that is too dangerous to dispose of, and even some left over alien artifacts collected over the last decade.

Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch’s inclusion in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was just the latest chapter in the long history of X-Men characters joining the Avengers. Wanda is back for Avengers: Endgame, of course, and we assume you know what happened to Pietro in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

But those aren't the only two X-Men that have answered the call to assemble with the Avengers. Plenty of mutants have become major parts of Avengers history.

So here is a historic look at those X characters who have also served as Avengers!

Quicksilver

Joined the team in Avengers #16 (1965)

In Avengers #16, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby did, at the time, the unheard of. The legendary fathers of the Marvel Age replaced the current roster of Avengers with an entirely new team, mostly comprised of former villains. Joining Captain America on the team were Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, and mutant speedster, Quicksilver.

Before he joined the Avengers, Quicksilver was a member of Magneto’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. He was a reluctant villain whose main motivation was protecting his sister from Magneto’s machinations. When he and his sister joined Cap on the Avengers, a cohesive history between the X-Men and the Avengers began.

Quicksilver almost instantly began to play the arrogant rogue, an Avenger with a huge chip on his shoulder out to prove that he was worthy of the name Avengers despite his violent past. Quicksilver served as a foil for many of his comrades and stood between his sister and many romantic relationships, first with Hawkeye and finally with the being that Scarlet Witch would marry, the Vision.

Scarlet Witch

Joined the team in Avengers #16 (1965)

Like her brother Quicksilver, Wanda Maximoff joined Earth’s Mightiest in Avengers #16 and became part of Cap’s Kooky Quartet. Scarlet Witch is the most powerful mutant ever to join the Avengers but oddly, she was never actually a member of any X team. Yes, she started out as a member of Magneto’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, but that was the only mutant team she was ever a part of.

Wanda spent her entire heroic career as a core member of the Avengers and from the Kree-Skrull War, to the Korvac Saga, to the Celestial Madonna saga, she was front and center for most of the major early Avengers stories. Scarlet Witch was the unwitting power behind the House of M crossover and profoundly impacted the X Verse when she declared, “No More Mutants,” decimating the mutant population. She was also the catalyst of the events leading to Avengers vs. X-Men, as the two teams came into conflict over the Witch’s future...which led to the death of Charles Xavier.

So while the Avengers experienced many happy moments with the Scarlet Witch such as her marriage to the android Vision, the X-Men experienced great tragedy because of Wanda Maximoff.

Beast

Joined the team in Avengers #151 (1976)

A founding member of the X-Men, the Beast might have been just about the last mutant you would ever imagine joining the Avengers, particularly in 1976. Beast joined the X-Men right after Marvel tried to integrate Hank McCoy into its family of horror titles. This was right after Beast went all blue (actually grey at first) and hairy.

From mutant to would be horror star, Marvel couldn’t seem to find a place for Beast until he joined the Avengers. Hank McCoy was a major member of the Avengers for much of the '70s and into the '80s forming a lasting friendship with Wonder Man that became one of the central relationships of the title. Where Beast found nothing but fear and hatred as a member of the X-Men, he found acceptance and celebrity as a member of the Avengers.

The Beast served as a liaison between humans and mutants, living out Charles Xavier’s dream of acceptance as an Avenger. The Beast will forever be known as the first heroic X-Man to answer the call of the Avengers and finding new levels of popularity with readers while doing so.

Namor, the Sub-Mariner

Joined the team in Avengers #262 (1985)

This one is a bit controversial, but Marvel has established that due to his little ankle wings, Namor is in fact, a mutant. Namor joined the Avengers in the mid-80s and became a major member of that era’s team. The highlight of Namor’s time with the Avengers was his constant chest pounding feud of one-upmanship with fellow Avenger Hercules. More recently, he had some squabbles with T'Challa in the pages of New Avengers.

He wouldn’t have made our list if Namor didn’t join the X-Men during the Avengers vs. X-Men saga where he was one of five mutants to gain the powers of the Phoenix. He might have served briefly with each team and his status as a mutant may be questionable, but Namor was one of the few X Avengers during some very exciting times in both teams’ history.

Firestar

Joined the team in Avengers vol. 3 #4 (1998)

Ah, everyone’s favorite amazing friend. Angelica Jones just recently joined the X-Men but was a long standing member of the Avengers starting with Kurt Busiek and George Perez’s classic run in the late '90s. This microwave wielding mutant powerhouse took part in many classic tales including Busiek and Perez’s Ultron story which pretty much everyone needs to read.

At first a member of the mutant Hellions and then the heroic New Warriors, Firestar joined the Avengers with her boyfriend Justice and basically earned her hero chops as a member of Earth’s Mightiest. She later took all her Avengers experience to the X-Men.

And no, Ms. Lion was not on any of these teams with the mighty Firestar.

Wolverine

Joined the team in New Avengers #6 (2005)

While he was the most popular member of the X-Men, Wolverine also joined the Avengers causing a firestorm of controversy as old time fans railed against the already hyper exposed feral mutant becoming part of Earth’s mightiest.

That didn’t stop Wolverine from taking part in some of the 21st century’s greatest Avengers stories, such as Civil War, Secret Invasion, Siege, and Age of Ultron all had Wolverine as a central Avenger. Plus, when the X-Men and the Avengers went to war in A vs. X Wolverine was caught smack in the middle of the conflict.

Wolverine originally joined the team because Tony Stark basically paid him a fortune (hey, Wolverine needed beer money), but he eventually became just as important to the team in the early part of the 2000s as Iron Man and Captain America. Fans may dream of seeing Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine joining the Avengers on the big screen, but for a long time in the comics, Wolverine answered the call to assemble.

Storm

Joined the team in Avengers vol. 4 #19 (2011)

When the Avengers needed to swell its ranks against the forces of Norman Osborn and HAMMER, the call went out to some great heroes. None were greater than the X-Men’s most regal member, the then Queen of Wakanda, the weather witch, Storm. Along with Wolverine, Storm has always been the heart of the X-Men and her time with the Avengers was a testament to her status as one of the world’s mightiest champions.

Storm came to the Avengers by the recommendation of her then husband the Black Panther and quickly became one of the team’s most powerful members. She was torn from the Avengers’ ranks during the events of Avengers vs. X-Men but during her time with the team, Storm served admirably.

Havok

Joined the team in Uncanny Avengers #1 (2012)

The X-Men’s first field commander, Cyclops, may have never joined the Avengers, but his baby bro Havok did in the pages of Uncanny Avengers. Havok was hand picked by Captain America to lead the team of human/mutant heroes and quickly became a great Avengers leader, guiding his team through memorable conflicts with Apocalypse and Kang.

Like most X-Men and Avenger characters, Havok’s character continuity quickly became convoluted and timey wimey. You see, in an alternate universe, Havok married and had a daughter with the Wasp and then had to undo the timeline to save reality, sacrificing his daughter along the way and becoming hideously scarred and – you know what, skip it. Havok is awesome and made an awesome Avenger.

Cannonball

Joined the team in Avengers vol. 5 #1 (2012)

Fans have watched this long time member of the New Mutants, X-Force, and the X-Men grow up over the decades. The culmination of Cannonball’s heroic journey occurred when he and his best pal, Sunspot, were chosen to join the Avengers.

Cannonball has an awesome wide eyed innocent quality that really drives home just how cool it would be to serve as an Avenger. He was always the corn-fed kid as part of the X-Men and the New Mutants, but as an Avenger, Sam Guthrie came into his own as a hero and as a man.

Sunspot

Joined the team in Avengers vol. 5 #1 (2012)

Sunspot joined the Avengers at the same time as his pal Cannonball. While Cannonball has that innocent vibe to him, Sunspot has a swagger like he belongs on a team labeled Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. He is arrogant, self important, and as heroic as they come. Like Cannonball, Sunspot served as a New Mutant, a member of X-Force, and a member of the X-Men before joining the world’s elite heroes.

Sunspot’s Avengers run was memorable. During his time as an Avenger, Sunspot took down one of the Avengers’ greatest groups of antagonists, the cadre of mad scientists known as AIM. How did Sunspot defeat AIM? Did he bust into AIM HQ using his solar energy powers to destroy the group? Nope, Sunspot purchased AIM, bee keeper helmets and all, and proved that Tony Stark wasn’t the only Avenger with the swag to throw around billons.

Rogue

Joined the team in Uncanny Avengers #4 (2013)

Rogue’s history with the Avengers goes way back, not as a hero, as she was first an adversary. It was Rogue who put Carol Danvers out of action for a long time when she drained the powers and the psyche of the former Ms. Marvel. Back then, it would be hard to imagine that the woman who so devastated one of the Avengers’ finest heroes would ever join the team’s ranks, but she became a core member of Uncanny Avengers.

Sunfire

Joined the team in Uncanny Avengers #5 (2013)

Sunfire was not an X-Man for long. He joined the all new, all different X-Men as the same time as Wolverine, Storm, and Nightcrawler only to leave the newly formed international team like seven seconds later. He also didn’t spend very long as part of Havok’s Uncanny Avengers but we freakin’ love Sunfire’s costume so we had to stick him on the list.

His time as an Avenger may have been short, but during his tenure, Sunfire took on Kang and a Celestial and even died for a bit (he got better).

X-23

Joined the team in Avengers Academy #39 (2012)

Wolverine joining the Avengers almost broke fandom but when his clone X-23 joined the Avengers Academy, well nothing really dramatic happened except some really good stories. X-23 was a neophyte hero when she entered the Avengers’ school and had to repress her savage nature in order to excel. She was a member in good standing of the school’s upper class and gave an edge to the Avengers Academy title for a number of years.

X-23 took the lessons she learned from the Avengers and is now a member of the core X-Men team, dating a time lost version of the teenage Angel. Who just gained cosmic powers. And lives in the same timeline as his older self. Who has amnesia and thinks he might be a real angel. Oh, comics.

Anyway, X-23 was once a student of the Avengers, so yeah, there you go.

Sabretooth

Joined the team in Uncanny Avengers Vol. 2 #1 (2015)

It’s hard to believe that one of the most vicious, feral villains in the Marvel Universe was on any superhero team, and this psychopathic killer has been on two. Victor Creed once attempted to reform and even convinced the X-Men he had seen the error of ways back in the early '90s, even going on a few missions with the team until he reverted to his true colors and gutted a few X people. After the inversion of Axis, Sabretooth was converted into a hero who tried to make up for his bloody past. Again. It didn't last.

Deadpool

Joined the team in Avengers #0 (2015)

Deadpool is a super star of comics, film, cosplay, and Hot Topics across America, but the Merc With a Mouth was also an Avenger. Now, if Wade Wilson shows up anywhere near Avengers 5, fandom might shatter out of pure glee. But if you want to see Deadpool cut wise and cut bad guys as a card carrying Earth’s Mightiest Hero, check out issues of Uncanny Avengers post-2015.

Deadpool was originally recruited by Captain America, but when Cap broke bad and went HYDRA in Secret Empire, it really threw the suddenly hopeful and heroic Deadpool for a loop and ignited some really great character moments. Deadpool was actually a really solid Avenger because he was constantly out to prove himself a worthy member of the Earth’s Mightiest. He even (mostly) refrained from putting peeps in the ground when he hung with the A team.

Cable

Joined the team in Uncanny Avengers #4 (2016)

Deadpool’s time traveling badass film co-star Cable also joined the Uncanny Avengers and served as the team’s strategist and moral compass, guiding the team through some tough times. Like Deadpool, Cable also turned the volume down on the killing when he joined the Avengers, but there was just something odd about seeing the grizzled old psychic mutant and his giant hunking gun race into battle as an Avenger.
