a scene with absolutely no context just hit me v intensely out of nowhere but. imagine a world where Steve's dad is just a little more powerful, a little darker, than in canon. and this mr. harrington doesn't know his son has spent the last five years fighting for survival, so when he finds out steve has been running around with the munson boy, he thinks it'll be an easy fix. steve has always been a soft sell.
he gets a call from steve, his son's voice giving him no time to even answer: "you pull that shit again, I'm sending the next one home in a body bag."
before he can even put down the phone, dial tone already ringing on the other side, he gets the message that the heavy he sent to intimidate eddie munson is in their medic's office with two spiral fractures and a shattered kneecap.
maybe steve could have gone into the family business after all.

✧Wally had drawn you before, you knew from the times he would ask you to model for him or because you would catch little sketches of yourself in his sketchbook.
✧Maybe you're quite good at drawing, or maybe you aren't. Point is that today you felt more than compelled to draw him, could be as a little thank you or just because he was pretty.
✧Julie and Frank (but mostly Julie) had intercepted him to talk about some...case? they were on, something about one of Frank's book going missing.

✧You tried not to stare too much, Wally was pretty quick to notice people looking at him and being catched while drawing him suddenly felt a little embarrassing.
✧God. Uh. How were you supposed to draw his hair?
✧He pulled the hairstyle surprisingly well, but any time you tried it just looked weird, you closed your eyes to remember but instead your brain jumped to that one time it got completely ruined after Barnaby threw a water balloon to his face.

✧The high pitched sound that came out of your mouth was completely justified and no one could tell you otherwise.
✧You look to the side, Frank and Julie disappeared down the road to keep with their search.
✧In all honesty Wally knew where you were, even if it was for a second he felt your eyes on him and would have come to say hi either way, why wouldn't he?
✧So now he was leaning forward close to your face and making that damn eye contact. Without moving an inch his glance moved down just a tiny bit, and he quickly catched what you were doing.
✧"Aww! You're drawing me?" his drowsy eyes came back, excitement in that calm voice of him. "Well yeah- but is not as pretty as your drawings, or you-"
✧To say he was flattered was the least. With all the joy in the world Wally told you how good it looked no matter what you could say, and before you could ask him he offered himself to be your model.
✧Needless to say, after sitting besides you under the tree you could feel his stare once more. This time though it didn't make you as nervous as usual, maybe because it gave you an excuse to watch him and analyze his features for so long. Wally looked happy and you could swear his cheeks were just a little more blushed than usual.
✧Whether you think you got him right he's going to be over the moon anyways, sitting close to you arms touching as he talks about how you definitely should draw more often, specifically draw him.

Jen Tortures Herself With Every Dreamworks Animated Movie Ever: The Bad Guys

So this is yet another Dreamworks movie I've heard nothing but good things about but just never got around to watching for some reason or another. And now that I have watched it, all I can say is what the fuck how did I sleep on this absolute gem of a film for so long???? Its so good, ya'll, SO damn good! So let's get into all of the many reasons why!

The Bad Guys are a group of infamous criminals, made up of the cunning Snake, master of disguise Shark, loose-canon Piranha, hacker Tarantula, and the leader of the pack, Wolf. After getting caught attempting to pull of a daring heist, the Bad Guys pretend to work on going good to pull off an even greater heist... until Wolf begins to wonder if being good might not be so bad after all.
So let me just say, the plot here is brilliant. Like seriously, there were some twists and turns here (especially toward the end) that had me YELLING over how genuis they were. It's extremely tightly crafted, sharply written, and pulled together by an incredibly charming cast that you just love to watch. It's a thrilling ride from start to end and I was excited to see where it would go next with every new scene.

The characters, like I said, are really great! Wolf is a really well-developed lead who goes through a pretty compelling arc, same with Snake (seriously, the fakeout with him toward the end had me in awe, what a total pro) and a good deal of the drama in the film lies between those two. The other Bad Guys are a bit less in focus, but they're still really fun and all play off each other really well too. Also, Diane, the governor??? Holy shit ya'll? She's AMAZING. Not gonna spoil the twist involving her but let me just say she is so damn COOL like oh my god.

This movie does attempt a twist villain but like... idk Marmalade isn't really that much of a twist villain? From the moment he showed up I said to myself "oh, he's the villain isn't he?" and I was proven right, but like... the reveal of how he set the Bag Guys up from the very start was so clever that I couldn't even be upset about it. This tiny motherfucker played them up until the very end where he finally got his comeuppance. Good villain. Not the best, but still, pretty good.

The humor here is pretty fun, with some jokes that genuinely had me laughing out loud. Of course, it couldn't quite help itself with a few fart jokes here and there, which... ermmm aren't quite my up of tea. Still, it balances that humor out well with some pretty compelling drama and a lot of heart that really helps to engage you in the story they're telling here.
Also the animation??? Oh my GOD the way this movie looks is INSANE. Like, just the character designs alone are so fresh and interesting compared to what Dreamworks has done in the past. There's this overall stylization to this movie that's very sharp and unique, and it just makes it a feast for the eyes. The way the characters move too, very fast and snappy, as if they're 2-d characters instead of 3-d. Lots of exagerrated motions and facial expressions, it's all very silly, yes, but it works so well with the tone this movie is trying to pull off.

So yeah, I hella loved this one. I'm so mad at myself for not watching this when it first came out, because its such a joy ride from start to finish. So stylish, so witty, so engaging, and so fun! I had a great time with The Bad Guys, and if you haven't seen it yet, you should, because chances are, you will too.
Rating: 9/10

Haruka & Tsukasa Character Discussion - HFD: The Joy of Being Someone Else, Someone Who Makes Everyone Smile
I've been feeling like talking about Haruka and Tsukasa for the longest time... The intentions behind Project Sekai's writing still does confuse me, but I decided to take a personal approach as to what Haruka and Tsukasa mean to me.

The desire to become someone else is an ongoing theme in Project Sekai, an emotion insecure characters like Ichika and Akito have. I feel like it's very easy to see in both their characters - Ichika is definitely most obvious, Akito takes a little tiny bit of psycho-analysis but his commissions scream obvious. The two characters I feel these emotions are very prominent in as well, but aren't clearly shown are Haruka and Tsukasa, and I want to discuss this because of how interesting I find it to be.
Haruka's desire to become 'someone else' really only became crystal clear in That Day's Dream. The story made it very obvious with how she wished she could be like the Smiling Princess as a child. As for Tsukasa, that desire has ironically always been crystal clear in his claims to "Future Star". What these two share in common is that neither of them seem to be insecure. But... if you're able to tell Akito is insecure from how hard he pushes himself because he can't reach his goal - it's really the same with Haruka and Tsukasa, they are extremely hard on themselves when they can't deliver hope/become a star (Haruka's rehabilitation, Sky's Edge). It just isn't as obvious as Akito's because they are both capable of becoming that 'someone else': they don't have to push themselves to the brink of death like Akito to be stopped and realize an alternative: that you have your own light. (Haruka is slowly realizing it... not Tsukasa)
Haruka and Tsukasa's feelings to "become someone else" seem to come from a similar place: not being able to make their loved ones happy as children. Haruka as a child laments making her mother sad, whereas Tsukasa has once said in passing in Hinamatsuri that he always makes Saki sad. It's completely normal to let people down from time to time, but both Haruka and Tsukasa express a desire of wanting to make sure this never happens again (Haruka as a child working on her smile, Tsukasa trying to buy Hina dolls). We see this sense of responsibility in their present again and again: Haruka being extremely hard on herself for accidentally hurting Mai, Tsukasa continuously criticizing himself for his mistake in unit story. It's like it's unacceptable for them to make mistakes, even when it's not entirely their fault nor responsibility (Mai should have stopped herself, Nene and Rui were the ones who made the mistake in the first place and anyone serious about it would have gotten angry). This sense of responsibility is what's hurting them, but the question is: where did it come from? Why is it so strong?
We don't know, so it's theory zone here. Haruka's monotonousness as a child and her few facial expressions at present (when off-stage) to me seems like a general difficulty to feel positive emotions strongly. I like to think this is genetic, linked to high-functioning depression (HFD) and/or anxiety. Further evidence of this is in how Haruka randomly expresses discomfort being in crowds as a child, and how her parents have to check if she's fine with walking more - we see a bunch of negative emotions amplified with child Haruka, even in the present-day where she's the one who constantly worries for MMJ. Haruka is more capable of expressions when on stage as an idol, and to me that's because she's acting as someone cute who makes everyone smile. Perceiving something as 'cute' fills us with a pure sense of happiness. As someone who suffers from HFD, I feel happiest when I can make other people happy, with the things I love. I know I enjoy them, but I cannot feel it strongly. But when I create something out of the things I enjoy, and someone else enjoys it - it elates me beyond anything. As if your dull emotions reached someone who feels it strongly in your stead... It gives you a reason to work hard and live your life to the fullest and nothing else can make you that happy to look forward to the next day. I'm inclined to believe this is what makes Haruka feel so strongly responsible for others, she lives for them and wants to deliver only the best hope for them.
But having HFD also means you've suppressed the pain that comes with dulled emotions, that it becomes the norm to suppress other pains too to keep meeting expectations of the people you live for. It's where I think her ED stems from, and why she herself isn't fully aware of all the pain that comes with her perfect lifestyle in Break Time - because she's suppressed it all.
As for Tsukasa, it's more ambiguous. There are tons of theories with how little we still know about him - but this is one way to look at it at an angle of HFD. Most kids in his position wouldn't be as empathetic with being neglected for their sickly sibling, and children don't have empathy at a young age - we see how Rui couldn't understand why his classmates were afraid and how An gets angry when she doesn't get attention. Tsukasa demonstrates emotonal maturity at a young age, being able to just accept the situation without throwing a tantrum about why it has to be that way (so far). On top of that, he also has the emotional clarity to see that Saki is lonely and that she has to continuously force her smile. It again stems from emotional maturity - always putting himself in the other's shoes: in Hinamatsuri, instead of fixating on how hurt he was from the fall, he thinks more about how Saki must be sad about having to see the dolls she longed for all dirtied up like that.
But just how is he able to be this... easily selfless, without harbouring any spite for having to neglect his own desires? Once again, my HC is that this has to do with being born with HFD, that spending time with his family doesn't spark that much joy for him to get strongly upset over. But what he does express is a desire not to be left alone for too long, a primitive human emotion, but only to himself. But even with this loneliness, he prioritizes the emotions of his family. Because they're all having a hard time, what he can do is make them happy. Shows gave him his answer: becoming a star like Amami would let him give the best smile to his family and friends. He naturally wants to entertain them as much as that show excited them so they didn't have to keep suffering, and stardom was the answer to that.
For Tsukasa, this is the reason why he must be at Amami's level no matter what. He views this as the only way for him to deliver the best possible smile, to fulfil his life's purpose. As I said, with HFD you live for people - your life's purpose is to make other people happy with what you enjoy. Tsukasa didn't think much about the performance in the prologue, but he does note how just singing and dancing made everyone smile, which could be a hint to what about shows he enjoys (like how Haruka finds idols cute). But I think he's also been heavily misled to think being the top star is the only way - because, why not just be a star in your own right, as Tsukasa Tenma and not having anything to do with Seiichi Amami?
A notable difference about Haruka and Tsukasa's discoveries of their dreams is how they were introduced to it. Haruka was invited on stage as her own idol, Tsukasa was an audience. Haruka can be her own idol, whereas Tsukasa lacks this reference point of himself. And another difference is how their families treat their dreams - Tsukasa's family seem to view it as just an odd trait of his, whereas Haruka's parents took it very seriously when she expressed her desire to become an idol. In fact, Haruka's mother's words were probably most important in making sure Haruka remembered that she would always, always, always be enough as herself:
"Yeah. Because Haruka's smile... is the cutest in the world!"
It's Haruka's smile that's the cutest in the world to her beloved mother, and not just on stage. Wherever it was that Haruka was smiling, wherever it was that she found her happiness, it'd be the cutest for her mother. Her mother wants her to smile, to be happy, to remember idolhood is for her own happiness above all. Whereas for Tsukasa, his family was smiling at the star in front of them, not him. His own performance won't make anyone happy.
It doesn't change that Haruka is hard on herself though. Habits of taking on too much responsibility for the only thing you care about don't die easily, and the idol world is tough... But she has people who care about her, who were there for her when she was at her worst, and now she has MMJ. There's also the difference of how Haruka wants to be seen as a normal schoolgirl, whereas Tsukasa is always in future star mode and has never expressed a desire to be normal. Haruka can probably cling onto her normal self after quitting idolhood and not feel overly responsible about letting people down, because she knows it's just right that her real, non-idol self should be loved too. But for Tsukasa, this common sense doesn't exist, not when he isn't convinced that him just being there, being normal is enough to make Saki happy (Hinamatsuri):
Saki: "W-Wait, onii-chan! It's fine to be more normal about it! Icchan and the others will get surprised!
Tsukasa: "I-Is that so?"
Saki: "It is! Besides, it's enough fun with you just being here with me!"
Tsukasa: "Just being with me makes you have fun... That is indeed something only a star can do!"
Saki: "Ahahaha..."
This common sense doesn't exist because his upbringing has taught him that only through stardom will he be accepted and loved normally. Because he couldn't give anyone a smile when he was just himself, but they all smiled at the star - this is who he has to be in order for people to love him and so he can bring happiness to them. Unlike Haruka's parents who made it a point to show her how her own happiness is what makes them happy. And no one thinks there's anything wrong with Tsukasa's pursuits because he seems to be having fun, but he can only really have fun because of the false sense of security and belonging that the title of 'future star' creates for him. That we see the excruciating pain he goes through when suddenly, that dream of becoming a star seems to be impossible.
Because his parents never seemed to take his dream seriously like Haruka's (which is possibly the reason she was able to become an idol so early), Tsukasa has to work on the stardom he desperately wants on his own with no guidance since childhood. There's no reference point other than the star on the TV, no teacher to help him shape his very own acting style, so he has to imitate all of the star's mannerisms to get closer to them. It's similar to Minori, but because she was pursuing idolhood out of her own passion for it there wasn't as much pressure to get there quickly and do it right. But for Tsukasa, being a proper star is the only place he thinks he'll be happy in - a place he can finally make people smile and for the happiness he brings them to colour his dull world and save him, like how Haruka was saved with idolhood (HFD tingz). Unfortunately, that proper path was closed off from the beginning for him, because of the lack of parenting.
Minori once viewed idolhood as being just like Haruka, until her first live made her realize how idolhood was about working hard and shining as yourself over naively yearning to be someone you admire. Haruka always knew this because of how she was introduced to idolhood in way of 'you can be an idol, too!'. Tsukasa only seems to be realizing that now: his obsession with colouring his dull world with stardom made him not see how he as a person, his own emotions, has a role in achieving it as well. He can't just be a copy of others. As we can see from how he currently has a hard time grasping deeply emotional roles, it isn't far-off to deduce that his continuous emotional suppression, learning-from-imitation and lack of focus on self have hampered his ability to feel emotions purely as himself, and instead understands emotions from other people's perspectives - reflected in his empathy as a child.
Sky's Edge portrays Tsukasa's soul-crushing pain of being far away from the star of that day, of the impossibility of being that star, exactly because of how obsessed he is with stardom saving his dull, worthless days. The world became grey and colourless for Haruka when she suddenly became incapable of standing on the stage as an idol. But for Haruka... there was still a tiny bit of hope she can return to the stage by a miracle, because her own guilt was what was stopping her and her past proved that she always had the ability to. So more than permanent loss, it was frustration at being the way she was, how her own emotional weakness made the world became grey and made her unable to be an idol, when it was just... right... there. But MMJ showed her that it was fine to be that way, that she can still be an idol even as someone like that. Everyone has emotions, so she doesn't have to be hard on herself for it - share that pain with them, and then try again tomorrow.
Haruka's feelings in Painful Hope can be seen as a similar pain as the powerlessness and self-hatred that Tsukasa felt in Sky's Edge, but the difference is that Tsukasa doesn't have the hope she has. He never got a place on the stage as his ideal star before and now it's being shown to him how he will never get it because he may have reached his limit. Even though he tried so hard, getting past all the times he felt weak and wanted to give up - because something about him just wasn't enough (his emotions). It's as if it was all pointless. There's no proof to Tsukasa that his efforts were never pointless, like how Haruka's past successes prove to her. And this is all because Tsukasa never had the proper path to stardom in the first place, because his parents for some reason just didn't push him onto it despite how passionate he was.
But Tsukasa still reaches out, because he wants it and wants to be saved. Even the tiniest bit of hope that's there for his dream, he'll reach out for it. Just like Haruka did after she experienced her trauma on stage, until... it all felt impossible. Tsukasa seemed about ready to give up too at the end of Sky's Edge and just gave it his all, not expecting his performance to be any great but still wanting to try his best. Luckily for Tsukasa it worked, but for Haruka... it never did, until she met MMJ. But it may be better if things don't work out for Tsukasa at some point, like it was with Haruka - because it led her to meeting MMJ who taught her a happiness of not holding all her pain to herself anymore. Tsukasa and Haruka are humans, so getting too caught up pursuing an ideal without considering your own emotions is like rejecting your humanity, placing inhuman expectations on yourself. As If's lyrics goes, "A never-ending story? That's boring. I want to see a dawn that won't come 'forever'."
But... It may get very messy if stardom doesn't work out with Tsukasa, especially with his upbringing of 'not feeling loved as just himself'. Without stardom, Tsukasa will have nowhere to go. It will probably be a necessary mess at some point in the future so he can finally learn to embrace his humanity...
Maybe I'm biased, but with how Mafuyu and Touya have highly similar upbringings, maybe it's the same for the other SEKAI creator (Tsukasa) and Haruka. The difference does seem to be that the non-SEKAI creators were still loved. Even Touya by his own family, despite being wronged by them - he could tell his father was passionate, to the point he loved his father's music and he's still able to voice his complaints, but with Mafuyu it's just cold iciness. As if Touya can feel that his family will always care no matter how he expresses himself, whereas Mafuyu can feel that if she isn't the person her mother wants her to be, then she will lose the love her mother has for her (emotional manipulation...). And with Haruka and Tsukasa, this whole post details it - how Haruka's family's proper support is what has gotten her this far whereas Tsukasa's lack of it is what has led him astray.
If Mafuyu and Touya share 'winter' in their name, then Haruka and Tsukasa's relationship is in Tsukasa's use of the word 'haruka' in describing how far his dreams are 🤪

the thing about loving nora so damn much is that i legally have to Make Her Go Through It. sometimes though, it feels so so so mean. however. i have to make my headcanons make sense from top to bottom.
so. per my headcanons on how her semblance works... once she was struck by lightning and her semblance unlocked, her passive ability unlocked too. rather than dissapating the tiny bits of electricity that her body naturally produces, like everyone else does, her body stores them. it's up to nora as to how she can deal with it.
before she gets a handle on it, she's a walking static producer. ever walked around in socks on carpet in the winter? she's like that, all the time. discharging whenever she touches anything that can conduct electricity. some of the less helpful instructors at tocsin (the vale combat school that my ren and nora attended from ages 13-17) force nora to wear rubber gloves when she's in class.
this, of course, doesn't actually help. she's still storing it up. nora copes by energizing herself with the excess electricity and just. Being Hyper. she always has been excitable but now she just bounces off the walls, because she doesn't know how else to spend the energy outside of combat.
ren doesn't know how to help her either. his semblance is strictly defensive/supportive. he has always been under intense stress to make sure he keeps it under control. they aren't on the streets anymore but nora feels compelled to make sure, should they ever end up there again, that she can pull more weight when it comes to keeping them safe.
if nora is worked up or stressed, she starts sparking. arcs of electricity come off her skin and they can hurt whoever gets close. it's a easy way to help her discharge, if you can get a grounded lightning rod close enough.
other lesser signs that she's not quite keeping it under wraps are, in order of increased severity: increased fidgeting/stimming (hilarious as a marker, as she's audhd af), static field as observed by her hair strands lifting up as if rubbed by a balloon, indigestion & nausea (too much energy messing with peristalsis); uncontrollable hiccups (excess electricity causing her diaphragm to spasm), and finally, the sparking.
these first two markers goes pretty much unnoticed by nora herself, though the rest of jnpr is pretty good at noticing when her hair starts going flyaway. ren can tell the difference between normal nora fidgets and too much energy! nora fidgets at a glance. when nora gets so bad that these side effects show, she tends to skip indigestion and nausea and go straight to hiccuping. rarely, like if she's in an argument with someone who doesn't know her well enough to point out her hair, she might reach the indigestion stage (for example, cordovin). however, hiccups come on fast when she's having a breakdown. they are her major sign that she needs to find some way to calm down and rein in her semblance.
she has two choices for doing so: sequestering it for later (a choice she makes when she's likely to be in combat soon) or discharging.
sequestering (storing) it requires her to rein in the electricity and sink it into her muscles. typically this means her thigh and butt muscles, as they are the largest. she creates a circuit of circulating electricity deep in her muscles and they slowly store the energy for later. (don't ask me about the biology here unless you want to be here all night; that is a promise, not a threat). she can also then use it to jump and leap. this is also why she skips so much!
storing/sequestering is what nora refers to as "sinking". it's not a term she really explains to anyone. in fact, she loathes explaining her semblance to people. firstly, no one expects her to understand how her semblance works, because she's hyper and bubbly and girly. secondly, people tend to get weirded out and wary of her when she explains, at least they did at tocsin. ren loves that she knows how both hers and his works.
she gets a lot of confidence and joy from it as jnpr works in private to train for the vytal festival, because jaune and pyrrha think her semblance is super cool. by the time vytal comes around, she's just stoked to be able to show off for the first time, since jaune decided they should keep it a secret until then.
on the other hand, discharging it is exactly what it seems. it's what she does when she doesn't need the extra energy or wants to be sure she's safe to touch others. she can discharge into the air (which causes a thunderclap of varying decibels, depending on how much electricity she discharges) or into the ground or to any grounded source. she can also do this offensively by throwing a bolt or striking something with precision.
after spending most of her time at tocsin wearing gloves, she keeps them in her beacon outfit, though fingerless, because she likes to comfort and the compression, but also she likes to know she's capable of safely touching people.
the mean thing that i was thinking of, which prompted this post, was nora being threatened with, and perhaps once subjected to, tocsin's cruelest 'therapy' which is to forcibly break a student's aura so that their semblance won't hurt anyone until they get it under control. which. may or may not have happened to her when she took a shower while charged, knocking out tocsin's campus water plant and electrocuting anyone who was also taking a shower at the same time. 🙃
anyways. i want to write a series of oneshots and drabbles that contains all my headcanons for the main kids' semblances and how they work and how they've adapted to them over time. im just a big sucker for logistics and after blake's semblance driving me batshit for months, i think it's what i deserve.

which fics do you keep open? i'd love to get some new reading material!
so this ask is in reference to a post i reblogged a while ago about how a good story can really alter your brain rhythm, and how when i try to write, i usually keep a couple of tabs open of a few specific fics that have a writing style i really admire to kind of help keep me on track.
there's obviously tons of fics i love for a multitude of reasons, but these are fics by people whose style i admire specifically, writers who have a knack for precision, ease, and simplicity in their storytelling (all things i struggle with, me and my run-on sentences).
i keep fics like the following open to remind me of what it's possible to achieve, and to get myself in a rhythm that otherwise doesn't come naturally to me.
miss you like a home by @hallo-catfish | matthias & maxime
the dialogue is lively and sparkling, the narrative is rich and thoughtfully introspective. full of deceptively simple images that sit unassumingly in the narrative, but powerfully elicit intimate, subtle, joyful, and painful emotions.
why this fic: a reminder of what imagery can achieve
it's the beginning of a new age by @yeats-infection | good omens
there’s a weighty, beautiful power behind these words, chosen carefully to their greatest effect. the author's sense of place, history, and scene-setting details that locate the story within a particular time and landscape is incomparable.
why this fic: the power of place
the theatre of fear by alivamae | our flag means death
a unique and memorable writer. the scenes are so pacy, and one thing trips into the next in a way that feels very impulse-driven and uncareful, and allows characters to just expose themselves without an excess of consideration. the writing is free and funny and irreverent and full of incredibly visual images and textures.
why this fic: remembering to keep writing free
a renaissance, another day by @tiny-steve | the goldfinch
pretty much in my mind the perfect story. literary in a way that is not overwrought. structurally tight. a sharply-observed, brilliantly-constructed bit of storytelling. uses excellent environmental details to tell us so much about characters in a powerfully pared-down way.
why this fic: less is more is everything
the wave at morning by @emungere | hannibal
a collection of scenes full of raw intensity. plays powerfully with sexual desire and compelling, psychological dynamics. the author hits emotional notes with such accuracy and economy, leaving all this imaginative breathing room around the scenes, which is what makes them so stimulating.
why this fic: a how-to for explicit writing
will as it moves towards deed by yeats | history boys
truly an exercise in simplicity and precision. the dialogue is sparse, but with an emotional punch behind it, and the characters have an expanded life that is suggested rather than told. a brilliant example of showing time passing, using the movement of other people around a centre point, montaging moments of passivity leading to action.
why this fic: simplicity in action
what if birds aren't singing, they're screaming by @drawsaurus | rocketman
a vivid sense of place, this author is brilliant at creating strong, visual landscapes on which exceptionally emotional scenes play out. there's a tangible realness to the setting, which allows the motif-driven jigsaw puzzle-pieces of the story to sit artfully on top. things continue on in the background while bright snapshots come to the front to get our attention.

thoughts on Card Captor Sakura?
I dislike it.
I haven't read it in forever, so my opinion on it isn't very specific and if you're a fan you'll probably want to point out all the errors in my reasoning, and at any rate no fan will enjoy my opinions on either CCS or CLAMP, but if you're okay with that ↓
Like most of CLAMP's titles, the plot and tension of CCS rely on "hiding complicated secrets from the readership although there is no logical reason any of it should be THAT secret". Characters aren't honest with each other and speak cryptically about stuff just to create an atmosphere of mystery and intrigue although there's very little rationale behind this and it's just a cheap ploy to create a false sense of ~something important~ going on. In MKR it worked to a degree because the series is only 3 volumes, has good pacing, and the revelation that comes at the end actually, genuinely is shocking, but in CCS (and most other long CLAMP manga) it's just endless repeating of "I can't tell you about this all-important plot-relevant thing because [NO REASON]" for how many volumes? 12? It's ridiculous and redundant and quite frankly bad writing. MKR2 went down the shitter because there wasn't, actually, a shocking revelation at the end, and instead of 3 volumes going by briskly towards a genuinely surprising moment, it's just the characters meaaaaaaaandering for what seems like endless pages that makes you forget this manga is only 3 fucking volumes long. CCS is a tiny bit better because it actually tries to have episodic chapters where stuff happens, so I do think it's better than MKR2 (or, god forbid, X), but I don't personally find the episodic stories or the characters compelling, so the series falls apart for me and I'm just turning the pages wondering when we'll finally get somewhere.
Worst example of this, although this is pretty much endemic to the whole of CCS and the whole of CLAMP: how many times does Toya press Yukito up against a wall and start declaring something ~important~ just to, uh, not do it for no reason what-so-ever? About a million? I hates it, precious.

So you bite the side of her breast as you wander down, not even bothering much - it comes in handy for you that she isn't wearing anything but her pants either - you can bite her hips as you pull them down and glare up at her slightly flushed face, the parted lips and pointy teeth, holding her eyes as you kiss her core, grab her thighs... And feel how utterly wet Sal is.
"Teasing me for being needy, and you're here almost dripping onto the floor."
You utter each word against her clit so she feels your lips moving, stroke your fingers over the slick heat on her inner thighs, chuckling into her... And then you slide two fingers inside of her, moving them relentlessly without giving her a break, something that makes her claw into the wall and into your hair as well while she groans.

A Great Distraction Masterpost
January has been gloomy as heck, so I thought it may be a good idea to put together a list of things that I read/watched/played since the beginning of the pandemic that managed to keep my mind off things. (I'm a doctoral student with anxiety and a 5-second attention span, so if this worked for me chances are it's Good Stuff.) Hope this helps!

Steven Universe
Set millennia after a kinda-failed alien invasion, this is a story of a half-human protagonist with a big heart who has to deal with the consequences of this long-ago war and learn what it means to be human.
The trope of a peacekeeper hero, excellently executed. Goes from cute to cute and rather dark, but still hopeful. Nice songs, lovely animation, interesting characters; you can tell that the storytelling goes from the hearts of the people who made this. This is a generally uplifting story; however it does have some discussion of war, mental illness and parental death, so tw for that. Also depending on where you live, this may be a bit difficult to track down across the streaming services... That said, this is undoubtedly one of the best shows I have ever watched.

Hollow Knight
You are a tiny badass with a sword and a mysterious past, travelling across a derelict kingdom and trying to make sense of what happened to it. And the more you learn, the more you suspect that you are here for a reason...
A 2D platformer game, doesn't require anything fancy from your laptop - not even a mouse. Previous gaming experience not necessary either. Beautiful visuals (I mean it!), a huge world to explore; exasperatingly difficult, which makes for a great distraction. I do have to warn that the plot of this game revolves around an infection, although it's not very reminiscent of Covid. As a plus, you get to kick its ass in the end!

Avatar: The Last Airbender
Four great nations are at war - have been for some time, actually, and things aren't looking great. The discovery of the Avatar - the peacekeeper with abilities from all the nations - offers a glimmer of hope; however it doesn't help that the Avatar is eleven years old and has spent the last century frozen in an iceberg.
Truly, a classic. I love the trope of the peacekeeper hero - both Avatar and Steven Universe explore it beautifully. Just like with Steven, I have to mention a tw for war, but this being a cartoon it's not explicitly traumatic. A great place to start if you're not into cartoons yet.

The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells
Murderbot is a half-organic, half-robotic being, serving as a security unit on interplanetary missions. It's much more sentient and independent than its company believes - but all it wants is for the annoying humans to leave it in peace long enough to watch one more episode of its current show. However when things go south on a mission, Murderbot has to deal with much more reality - and human interaction - than it would like.
Very fun and quick read; the narrator's voice is just excellent. Much less bloodthirsty than the title suggests, but still a tw for injury and death. (Not too much though - I hate gore and I was perfectly fine reading this.)

Folk of the Air by Holly Black
Elfhame is no place for humans - well, normal humans, anyway. Jude Duarte was brought up here with her sisters, and she is hell-bent on proving her worth in the fairy court she has come to call home. Few are happy with that, or believe that she can make it - but even Jude herself wouldn't have guessed where the political turbulence would get her.
Very well-written; politics of the fairy court stand to logic and offer plenty of exciting plot twists. True to the title, some characters can be rather cruel, so tw for violence and parental death; however most of the plot revolves around politics and not explicit physical trauma.

Cartoon Saloon films: Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea, WolfWalkers
Some of the best modern animation plus Irish mythology. Each of these films explores a different myth/historical period, but they are similar in the magical atmosphere; I recommend each and every one of them. The plots being different, I won't list all the tw's here; there's nothing particularly gruesome going on, so just have a look at the plot description before watching to check for sensitive topics.

Gravity Falls
Dipper and Mabel are sent to a cabin deep in Oregon forest to spend the summer with their great-uncle. Sounds like a boring holiday - however it turns out that the town has more weird secrets than residents, and even their great-uncle seems to be hiding something...
Very cartooney, so the style might be a little off-putting at first - however I loved the plot, especially when the overstory started to pick up. This is a great exploration of family and what summer should feel like when you're an adventurous kid. Will probably get you into cryptography.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power
Adora grew up with the bad guys. That is, of course, she thinks they are the good ones - until one day she escapes from the camp and sees much more than she bargained for. Oh yes, and apparently some magical sword wants her to be a hero. Now on the side of the rebellion, she has to protect her new friends, deal with the old ones, and try to figure out what the heck is going on.
This show is fun, very diverse and full of positivity without trying too hard. For me it was a joy to watch something with a lot of strong female characters without having the dark gender issues discussed, not even once. (I mean, it's still important to have shows that explicitly discuss this - but a show where characters are just happy in their identities, no questions asked, is something I didn't know I needed.)

Carmen Sandiego
The young woman who calls herself Carmen Sandiego has a rather unconventional occupation. She was brought up in a school for thieves - but when she glimpsed the outside world, she realised that things weren't as simple as her teachers said. Now she uses her expertise to track her former schoolmates - and steal back their loot.
This is probably the most young-age-oriented item on my list, so there's not a lot of drama going on, and some plotlines are rather simple. That said, this series is good fun, I still found the story and the characters compelling, and the animation was really good as well. Honestly, seeing what modern 2D animation can do is a treat.
These things - and many other - helped me stay sane during this year; I found out that stories can be fun shameless escapism and really deep and satisfying at the same time. Feel free to add to this list - and I will keep it updated as well when more good stuff comes my way.

hi, not a prompt, just a request for writing encouragement if that's okay w you!! i've recently started to become okay w the idea that i like girls! there's one ship in particular where i very much relate to one of the girls, and the other girl has characteristics i'm attracted to, so i love both characters a lot! i've wanted to start writing them but i do get a little discouraged bc they aren't a popular ship at all, there's barely any fics of them so idk if i'm writing them 'correctly' or not?
sure thing, we do encouragement sometimes. first of all, nice!! congrats on the self discovery! 
it sounds to me like you’ve got a canoe, or perhaps a simple raft (tiny ship, rarepair, etc). it can definitely be a bit discouraging when there isn’t much out there for your pairing, but! i think it gives you a unique opportunity to portray the characters in the way that feels right for you! since there isn’t much out there, there’s less for you to compare your work to. sometimes that is scary, because you can’t tell if it’s “right” but I think it’s a beautiful thing. are you going to write these characters the same way the original creator would? perhaps not. is that okay? sure! if the characters and the story speak to you, I say listen and take joy in your exploration of them. it may not be a big ship - just you and a couple other authors in a canoe - but your stories are absolutely worth telling in a way that feels right to you. also, who knows? perhaps someone else will read your work and decide to join you in the canoe and you’ll have to upgrade to a rowboat. I should know; I’ve definitely shipped several rarepairs because I liked an author’s style or thought it was compelling ~Nicole

From theguardian.com March 2014 Emma Watson has criticised the "dangerously unhealthy" image projected by the fashion industry and said the pressure to look perfect has taken its toll on her. The actor has also described her doomed attempts to merge into the background as a student at an American university, where she found herself being trailed everywhere by British photographers. After the recent New York premiere of Noah, she tweeted a photograph of the array of cosmetics – and a guardian angel pin – that she said were essential aids to her flawless appearance, and another of herself in a backless dress captioned: "I did NOT wake up like this." The actress said she is better at taking criticism these days than she once was. "As a younger woman, that pressure got me down, but I've made my peace with it. With airbrushing and digital manipulation, fashion can project an unobtainable image that's dangerously unhealthy. I'm excited about the ageing process. I'm more interested in women who aren't perfect. They're more compelling." Watson became famous playing Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movies and has been constantly in work since. She is about to start filming a thriller, Regression, by Alejandro Amenábar and is also trying to complete her degree at Brown University, Rhode Island. She enrolled in 2009 for what would have been a four year course, but has taken several breaks for film work, and spent a year studying at Oxford. "After Harry Potter, all that mattered was university," she said, in an interview with the Sunday Times. "It wasn't always easy to break down barriers, as having men from the British press following me with cameras didn't help my mission to integrate. The American press, by contrast, "afforded me so much privacy", but her fellow students recognised her at once. "On the first day, I walked into the canteen and everyone went completely silent and turned around to look at me. I had to say to myself 'it's OK, you can do this'. You just have to take a deep breath and gather your courage."
GUARDIAN COMMENTERS SAY: So something like this Burberry campaign she did a few years ago? Hypocrisy at its finest. She flaunts with the fashion industry and enjoys its perks all the time, but hops on the 'female beauty' bandwagon and enjoys a moan when it suits her. I'd find her socially conscientious pleas convincing if she hadn't profited in the hundreds of thousands (if not millions) from the big, bad, evil fashion/beauty industry. A few years ago, Emma Watson appeared in high-profile advertising companies for posh Paris fashion house L'ancome. I'm guessing she was handsomely remunerated for her 'work'. Certainly she was not forced into letting her photo shopped image be used to market expensive cosmetics and perfumes. Did she only discover how 'oppressive' the fashion industry is when L'ancome cancelled her lucrative contract? Ms Watson is essentially a third-rate actress, and her pronouncements on large and complex issues, such as the pressures on women, are so idiotically vapid that one is brought to conclude that she really can have very little aptitude for higher education. I mean, her comments are hardly indicative of an educated person, or even of a moderately literate or intelligent person. By the way, I understand that she spent a year at Oxford as a visiting and/or exchange student while enrolled at Brown. How come? She is a British national, and so by rights she should not have gone to Oxford on a visiting/exchange student programme, irrespective of whether she happens a student at an American university. If I am wrong about this, then I should like to have some explanation as to her status at Oxford, and how she came by it. Otherwise, I suppose that one might be forgiven for thinking that it is yet another case of a once respectable academic institutions bowing down before the false idols of celebrity and money. (This is quite apart from the fact that all that one has read about her since she began life as a student concerns her acting career, her modeling and her various boyfriends.) SOME COMMENTS FROM THE DM ARTICLE Notice how it's always people who are very aware of how attractive they are that babble on about how it's okay to have physical blemishes? I'd like to see an ugly person say the same thing. Only someone young, beautiful and with her whole life before her can say that, and mean it. Sometimes, her comments maKe her more stupid. Get lost and Wingardium Leviosa. What a daft thing to say. But, then again, this is coming from someone who can't seem to finish uni. I feel like I've aged about 10 years reading this article. Here's what I think As for what she is saying about Brown it's a complete 180 from how she described it before 2013. In 2013 she started to elude to the fact it was not as great as she made it out to be. She gushed how wonderful her experiences had been to so many magazines. Now I think she's looking for pity and to have excuses why she never stayed at Brown. She preached how she was staying put. I am so fucking tired of having to post quote after quote proving my point with this when she lies time after time. She is not honest! What the truth is doesn't matter because she always lying. It's a constant thing with her. As for the pressures on women she is really a piece of work. The guardian commenters summed it up nicely. She had no problem attaching herself to Burberry and Lancôme. She's had no problem giving them praise and talking about fashion and make-up in just about every interview. That part where she talked about photo shopping and air brushing. Just wow! Did she see the Wonderland magazine she edited? Some photos it didn't even look like her. She'll continue allowing her image to be manipulated no matter what. She thinks she’s aging? She still looks 15 without all the make-up and photo shopping. Last year she was stopped at JFK because they thought she was a unaccompanied minor. Did you know one of the product she pushed when modeling for Lancôme was an anti-age cream? That's the dumbest comment in her entire interview. But really she's said this kind of stuff the last three years and most notably in 2011 where she had a various quotes about body image and being comfortable in your skin. I wont bore you with those quotes since I have before. She gets lauded for those comments and people place her in role model status but when you closely look at it they were just words that meant nothing at the time other than to make people think, “Emma is so anti-Hollywood!! She’s a role model for women and young girls” but meanwhile she never believed in any of it in the first place. At the time she said those things she was at a more healthier weight than she ever was. In 2011 you can tell she either stopped working out or ate more. I thought she looked her best then. Now she’s back to stick thin and even surpassed it a way IMO is unhealthy. She sending a bad message to women. From standard.co.uk July 2011, “She sees modeling as an extension of acting, in fact - just playing a role - but is conflicted about its demands. “I think the pressure the media and the fashion industry put on women to look a certain way is pretty intense. There’s a certain tyranny to trying to achieve that kind of beauty. I don’t know, I’m maybe not the best person to speak about this because I obviously completely adhere to it,” she laughs nervously. “ ^She really needs to start taking her own advice and quit being a judgmental hypocrite. Not just with this topic but everything she tends to speak out against that she does it herself. Recently she tweeted a photo of all this make-up and I posted this on my tumblr days ago

Whenever there was a part at school, I went for it. I was probably a bit of a show-off in the sense that any chance to get up and be seen, I did it. I was such a drama queen. So I guard it, because I don’t date people who are famous, and I don’t think it’s fair that, all of a sudden, intimate details of their personal life are public as a direct result of me. I find that so uncomfortable, and I wish there was a way I could protect those people, but it’s not in my control.” When I suggest her boyfriends are consenting adults, she looks worried. “But you don’t choose who to love, who you have feelings for, do you?” She throws her phone into her bag and retreats home to pack, as she’s flying to LA. So she can go to international magazines and complain she can't find a man or that men are intimidated by her? She had in the past before Will Adamowicz. It was in almost every one of her interviews for a few years. So she can use Matt Janney (this new guy) on a beach in a bikini PDA session as a publicity stunt to cover up her ex boyfriend being caught rolling coke bombs and also use him to product place an iPhone in Madrid but she wants to keep it private? And she doesn't date famous guys? What about Johnny Simmons (Young Neil) and George Craig (Front man for rock group One Night Only)?  If you can Google their name and you see them in movies or music videos, they're famous.

Let It Go- Learning to Breathe chapter 4
Pairing: Widow Riley (Drake x MC), no pairing yet

Summary: Riley gets an unexpected gift.

A/N: I have no heart because I have crushed it, my chest is now an empty pit that aches from this. That’s my way of telling you this is gonna hurt go grab your comfort drink, a blanket and tissues, you will need it. I was not expecting half of what happened in this but the characters have their own minds.
Series warnings: This series will follow Riley, Liam and Bastien after Drake’s death. It will deal with the grief and pain of losing a loved one. Possible NSFW content to come. Possibly dark. If you click read more you acknowledge you are at least 18 years of age.

Riley absentmindedly picked at the food Hana had brought up earlier. She barely had an appetite, and would happily continue to avoid eating anything but she now had to think about someone else. She popped a piece of fresh melon into her mouth as her eyes drifted around the room. She froze as her eyes landed on a pot of miniature sunflowers that hadn’t been there earlier in the day. Her heart felt like it was being squeezed in a vice as fresh tears sprang to her eyes. How? The fork slipped through her fingers, clattering as it landed on the tray, she didn’t flinch, didn’t blink, her eyes still trained on the pot of her favorite flowers. She’d only mentioned that sunflowers were her favorite flowers to one person, the one person they couldn’t be from. I watched him die…
Drake had been the only one she told how she loved to dance in the field of sunflowers on her grandparents farm as a little girl.
“Why do you like sunflowers so much?”
“They remind me of my grandparents. My grandmother loved them so much they planted an entire field of them on their farm.” She smiled as she thought of her grandmothers words. “She said they looked like they were tracing the sun's path in the sky, only coming alive for the sun. Her words stuck with me, she said that the sunflower loved the sun so much it followed it.” She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “I know that sounds silly, but to love something that much…” She trailed off. Please don’t think I mean Liam… “I used to dance between the seemingly never ending rows of sunflowers, I don’t know what compelled me, they just always made me feel happy and I guess as a kid when I was happy I would dance.” She nervously bit her lip as she looked up at him through her lashes. “I know it sounds stupid…”
“It doesn’t sound stupid.”
She smiled, she never told anyone exactly why she loved sunflowers before, but she just felt so connected to him, she knew he’d understand.
She stared at the pot containing at least half a dozen miniature sunflowers. Don’t be stupid it was just a coincidence. How would anyone else know her favorite flowers? They are in a pot not cut. How did they know she preferred living plants to fresh cut flowers? He must have told someone.

Bastien sighed as he wiped the sweat off his brow with the back of his hand, his eyes surveying the area, checking his work. It wasn’t part of the job description, but he felt he owed it Drake to make sure Riley received her present.
Bastien arched his brow in question. “Why exactly are we planting sunflowers?”
“They’re Riley’s favorite flower, and I wanted to surprise her.”
“I’m sure you’ve heard of a florist.” He teased, he knew if Drake was planting this many rows of flowers there must be a reason.
Drake chuckled shaking his head. “Riley doesn’t like cut flowers. She says she likes to watch them grow and bloom, she doesn't like to watch them wither and wilt in a vase.” He ran a hand through his shaggy hair. “She has all these memories of dancing in a field of sunflowers, the way her eyes light up when talking about it…” He shrugged. “I can’t explain it but I just want to see her eyes light up like that every day.” He looked around the open space around the freshly tilled earth. “I’d love to put a gazebo out here, and maybe a swing set so she can sit and just watch the sunflowers trace the sun’s path in the sky and our kids playing at the same time.”
Bastien placed his hand on Drake’s shoulder. “I’m sure she’ll love it.”
“Yea, too bad they won’t be up in time for our wedding.” He shrugged his shoulders. “A late wedding present is better than none.”
“Drake, It doesn’t matter if it’s late, she’s lucky to have you. It’s not every husband that would pay such close attention.”
Drake nodded.
“I’m glad you found someone who you love so much.”
Drake smiled. “Yea, I really love her, I’d give my life for hers.”
Bastien shook his head. “Let’s keep the heroics to a minimum.”
“No promises Bas.”
Bastien hung his head as he finished surveying his job, Drake shouldn’t have had to give his life for hers. I’ll make sure she gets them Drake, don’t you worry. He’d already made sure to get her a pot of miniature sunflowers for her room as she was always staying cooped up inside. I will make sure nothing happens to her or your child. He heaved a heavy sigh, the guilt once more curling around his heart, he was the reason Drake wouldn’t be giving her his present himself. He was the reason that Drake would miss out on watching their child grow. The least he could do was make sure he did a better job in keeping Drake’s family safe than he had with Drake. I may have failed you once but I won’t do it again, I promise you I’ll do a better job of keeping them safe.

“Riley, you really need to eat.” Hana sighed as she took in Riley’s barely touched tray, bringing her a new tray that would most likely also be neglected.
“I did eat… a little.” Riley replied not tearing her eyes from the pot of sunflowers.
Hana sat on the edge of the bed, her heart aching for her friend. “Riley I know you miss him, but you have to take care of yourself and the baby.”
“Peanut.”
“What?”
“Peanut, Drake would call the baby peanut. Our little peanut he’ll never get to meet because of Liam.”
“Riley…”
“Where’d these sunflowers come from?”
Hana turned, small smile forming on her lips brought on by the cheerful pot of flowers. “Bastien brought them in, aren't they pretty?”
Bastien. Of course Drake would have told Bastien. “Did he say why he brought them in?”
“He said they were a smaller part of a bigger wedding present I think.”
Riley tore her eyes from the pot of flowers, turning to stare at Hana. “What wedding present?” Tears formed in her hazel eyes, her throat turning tight as she spoke.
“Just something he said Drake planned.” She placed a gentle hand on her friend's shoulder. “Oh Riley. It will be okay.”
Tears streamed down her porcelain cheeks. “Do you know what it is?” What could Drake have been planning? Why tell me now? Why did he have to die? She squeezed her eyes shut. I miss you so much Drake.
The curtains surrounding her enormous bed rippled as by blown by a gentle wind. I’m right here Riley.
She felt a pang in her chest. No you aren’t, not really, not how I need. You will never hold me again. A chill ran down her spine. She shook her head, she needed to find a way to let him go, a way to be able to move forward, even if she knew it would hurt like hell to do so.
Hana shook her head. “He didn’t tell me.” She looked down as her phone vibrated. “He says I should take you out on your balcony.”
Riley’s heart thundered in her chest. She hadn’t stepped foot on her balcony since before… As much as she enjoyed the view, her last night spent there was too strong a memory. She slowly nodded, as she swallowed the lump forming in her throat. You can do it. You have to move forward, for peanut. She took a slow deep breath as she stood, trying desperately to be strong enough for whatever she was about to walk into.
She followed Hana onto the balcony, the sounds of the waterfall washing over her, filling her with temporary peace and calm. She glanced around, unable to see anything that was different from months before. What exactly am I supposed to see?
Hana gasped beside her, grabbing onto her arm. “Riley, look!” She pulled her towards the end of the balcony.
Riley’s eyes went wide as rows and rows of sunflowers filled her vision. Dozens of plants, with their stems and petals stretched high reaching for the sun. Oh Drake. She pulled her arms up, wrapping them around her middle as if she were giving herself a hug.
Hana turned to her friend. “Oh Riley are you okay.”
Riley nodded, the knot in her chest slowly unraveling. He remembered. “I’m fine.” Thank you Drake.
Her hair ruffled on a breeze. You’re welcome Riley. I will always love you, but it’s okay to let go.
Fresh tears welled in her eyes, though she felt wrapped in a slight sense of peace. She smiled at the small field of sunflowers, the joy they always brought her washing over her. Thank you for making sure I got them Bastien. She wiped at her cheeks, her hand instinctively resting on her tiny bump. I’ll be okay, we’ll be okay.

Hi! First of all, I'd just like to say thanks for your explanations as to why "genderbending" is transphobic. I hadn't really understood, but your reasoning cleared things up! Secondly,, I have a question for you, if you've got the time. say... if a character is presented as male in canon, would it be genderbending/transphobic to hc them as a trans girl or nb individual? My apologies if the answer is blatantly obvious.. and I'm just Not Seeing It, and thanks for your time ! Have a nice day! ★
I’m always happy to help folks learn, and I’m glad I could shed some light on that.
As for trans headcanons, I’ve got a few posts on that, which I’ll copy paste the main arguments here in a bit of patchwork
If you’re not a trans woman, and you’re headcanoning a character meant to be read as male, or who is canonically male, as a trans women instead…you should probably take a step back.
If trans women have rallied around a communal headcanon of that character as a trans woman, then that’s a green light. 100% go ahead
On the other hand (to offer one example of a shady approach), if you’re crushing on a male character and decide to HC that character as a trans woman to suit your lesbian sexuality, then that’s not good, and you’re being transmisogynistic by equating cis men with trans women. We’re not cis men. We’re not a vehicle for folks to try to escape or process their compulsory heterosexuality baggage, especially since all that cissexist, transmisogynistic, fetishistic bullshit blows up on us instead of those who are using us.
I mean, the issue is that most characters that folks who aren't trans women headcanon as trans woman are canonically male characters. There’s, like, maybe 3% that are canonically female characters that get HCed as trans women, and that’s including the batch “all your favs are trans lesbians” HCs done just to piss off transphobes, and includes gross cis men that rework female characters into their dickgirl fetish material, so even then, that tiny portion is really slanted in a bad way, and it’s not a good situation for trans women looking to enjoy and rally around trans woman headcanons people make when there’s next to never any even halfway decent ones outside of the ones we ourselves create.
And that harsh disparity…even if there are some good folks out there who hold different/better views... does send a message that those folks do generally see trans women as men rather than women.
Like, the amount of woman characters HCed as trans women should, by all means, vastly outnumber the amount of cis men characters people HC as trans women. We are, after all, women. We’re more similar to cis women than men by far. So the fact that folks tend to headcanon more men characters as trans women than actual woman characters? Casts a light on the kind of transmisogyny in fandom.
And that’s a problem. Like, yes, folks need to recognize that there are women who are perceived (via cissexist standards) as men out there. But when people look at a cast of characters and can’t see any of the canon women as trans women, that’s a problem. It’s generally because (A) they can’t look at us and see us as women, so they don’t even stop to consider headcanoning woman characters as trans women, and (B) they fetishize our transitions and would heavily prefer to HC men as trans women so they can engage in a number of twisted elements like sissy fetish, crossdressing fetish, transformation fetish, cissupremacist guidance (e.g. a cis woman partner teaching the trans woman character ‘how to be a woman’), g!p/dickgirl/f*ta trope material and related PiV sex-associated kinks like pregnancy and breeding fetishes, etc. etc. etc.
In the end, I trust trans women to wade through media and pick out headcanons without doing so based on harmful ideas of what trans women are. I can’t reasonably trust others, since most male character trans woman HCs I’ve come across that weren’t initially supported by trans women are based on a whole host of gross ideas and assumptions about us, or end up being gross and full of harmful assumptions about us. Through doing so, folks run the amplified risk of associating us with men, much in the way casting men as trans woman characters in film/tv associates/equates us with men and maleness.
This needs to be approached as a pattern of behaviour rather than individual decisions each made in vacuums. There’s a consistent, persistent pattern of transmisogyny in how folks in fandoms headcanon characters as trans women. 
So really, maybe just cool it with HCing male characters as trans women if you’re not a trans woman, because 95%+ of the time, you’ll have really bad reasons for it, and we don’t deserve it. There’s zounds of female characters to HC as trans women, so maybe folks should just run with that for a while and get used to the idea of associating trans women with women first before dipping into men, let alone heavily like they currently do.
So yeah, essentially, in an ideal world, people could toss around whatever headcanons they want without worrying much, but fandom has a really rampant issue of taking “male favs” and saying they’re trans women/ trans lesbians as a way to validate their attraction and love for those characters, And honestly, most of the time, there’s no even remotely manageable subtext that could be used to interpret them being trans, and the characters are usually toxic piles of manure performed by popular actors with obsessive fandoms (like Benadryl Cummerbund, or that twiggy British dude who plays Loki, or the weird square-faced pale dudes from Vampire Diaries whose named escape me), meaning it’s less about the character and more about the actor most of the times…which, again, raises major red flags, since people fantasizing about cis men as trans women as a way to avoid dealing with their comp het is a common and significant issue in fandom.
Meanwhile, it’s intensely rare that anyone headcanons canon female characters as trans women. Most of those cases are when people just broadly paint an entire cast as trans women as a joke or to piss off transphobes in fandom, rather than actual HCs with some heart behind them.
Obviously, I wouldn’t be able to prevent folks from doing what they want, and I’d never want people to stop only because I asked them to (I’d want them to recognize the dynamics within fandom and how trans fetishization and transmisogyny flourish there without much of any challenge, and not want to be part of that problem) but I’d really urge them to ask why they feel compelled to HC men as trans women and whether they tend to headcanon male characters as trans women at any more than half the rate that they do canon female characters. Because I can tell you that when the vast majority of trans woman HCs I come across are gross/creepy and/or violent and/or misogynistic and/or predatory men/boys, or batch jobs purely meant to spite transphobes rather than actually represent us, or fetishistic tripe, it gets kind of exhausting. 
Headcanoning them as NB, that’s another discussion that I can’t really have, not being NB and not having a meaningful say on NB representation. I’m sure someone’s discussed it before, though.

Requests are open and I plan for them to remain open! I am feeling so much better. I never actually get many requests, so these little fics are just sorta little balloons of happiness for me. I tried something new in this one and I hope you’ll all forgive me if I messed up some details! I tried to do my research, and I’ve also never written a Papyrus ship before. I hope you like the fic (under the cut!), and thank you for the request!
You were, admittedly, just a bit nervous.
When you first met your date for the evening, you were fairly certain he was ace. Or maybe that he didn’t know what a dick was? His only focus had been the dogs gnawing on his legs. At first, the sight had both shocked and alarmed (and, okay, you would admit it, made your heart sigh from adorableness). But, well, the skeleton said it was only natural for dogs to want to eat his legs, as he was made of bones.
You had only gone into the pet store that day in order to get food for Pebbles, your rambunctious 11 month old Pomsky. Imagine your surprise when you saw a line wrapping around the store on adoption day, not just to adopt some dogs, but to see the skeleton caretaker that was wrangling them all.
You had shared a nice conversation with the skeleton, learning that his name was Papyrus (well, more like “THE GREAT AND VERY GOOD WITH DOGS PAPYRUS”) and that he had just gotten the job that day. Evidently, the person who had been overseeing the adoptions that day had gotten very sick. “AS THE UNOFFICIAL OFFICIAL MASCOT FOR MONSTERKIND, IT IS MY DUTY TO BE AN UPSTANDING CITIZEN AND HELP THESE PUPS IN NEED!” He had said. “BESIDES - I LOOKED AFTER MANY DOGS IN THE UNDERGROUND. THESE PUPPIES ARE MUCH EASIER, AS THEY DO NOT HAVE KNIVES. OR AXES. OR SWORDS.”
You had laughed for awhile after that, sharing those laughs with the energetic man. You only realized how long the conversation went when your phone alarm went off, telling you to get your butt home to walk Pebbles before the night shift. You explained to Papyrus that you were essentially a helper in the cafeteria at the nearby college, letting students into the cafeteria via swipes of their card. Papyrus was absolutely enthralled by the idea. “WOWWIE! YOU ARE LIKE A FOOD GUARDIAN!”
You exchanged numbers - “YOU MUST MEET MY BROTHER SANS. HE TOO LIKES FOOD AND ALSO ME, WHICH MEANS YOU WILL GET ALONG VERY WELL!” - and said your goodbyes. All through your shift that night, you and Papyrus texted back and forth; he sent you so many dog pictures that day. You made sure to send him some of Pebbles.
And now, 2 months later, after Undyne, Alphys, and even Sans - yeah, even the overprotective brother of Papyrus - had egged you on and pushed you and told you to take the chance, you had finally asked Papyrus on a date.
And, to your surprise, he had agreed.
You straightened your bow tie, gulping. Did you look ridiculous? You never wore fancy suits. There hadn’t really been an occasion for it in the past, after all. But, well, you had really wanted to dress up for Papyrus. It seemed fitting. Er, more so than the bow tie did - that is to say, it really didn’t fit very well.
But it was too late to take it off. Here you were, outside of Papyrus’s house. You’d been here before, of course, but that had been under different circumstances. Now, you licked your lips nervously before knocking lightly.
The door swung open quickly, startling you slightly. “HELLO, HUMAN FRIEND!” You blinked, gaping at Papyrus. His irises sparkled. “WOWWIE… YOU LOOK VERY NICE. I HAVE NEVER SEEN YOU LOOK SO FANCY!”
You smiled, albeit a bit awkwardly. “I, uh… You look… different?” You weren’t sure what else to say about his new outfit. You were used to him wearing handmade sweaters and skinny jeans that clung to his bones. But today, he was wearing very loose short shorts that showed off the tips of his pelvis, a crop-top with the words “Bad Girl” crossed out - under it was written, in large marker, ‘GREAT BOY’ - and basketballs attached to his shoulders. He also had a baseball cap on backwards.
“IS DIFFERENT GOOD?”
“Well, I like you no matter what you wear, Papyrus. I think you look fantastic.” He squealed happily, bouncing on his feet. That was definitely cute. “Can I come in?”
“OH! YES, PLEASE, COME IN!” Papyrus held the door open for you, letting you inside. You could smell something in the kitchen. “I WOULD NOT WANT YOU TO FEEL COLD OUTSIDE!”
“Yeah, that doesn’t sound too nice.” You glanced at the couch, smiling as you saw Sans stand up, dusting himself off. “Hi, Sans.”
“heya. have fun, you two. don’t stay up too late, paps.”
“OF COURSE I WON’T, SANS! I AM NOT AT ALL IRRESPONSIBLE. I WON’T STAY UP UNTIL 2 IN THE MORNING LIKE SOME SKELETONS!”
“what can i say - i was just two full of energy to get to sleep.”
“SAAAAAAAANS! NO PUNS IN FRONT OF MY DATE!” You couldn’t help but laugh, relaxing a tiny bit despite the tension from nervousness in you. Sans winked as he saw you relax. He was a pretty good brother, making you feel more relaxed for this date.
“alright. ulna-t bother you two anymore. have a good night.” You blinked, and he was gone.
Papyrus sighed. “I AM SORRY ABOUT HIM. HE WOULDN’T PROMISE ME TO KEEP HIS PUNS AWAY FROM OUR DATE. HOW DISAPPOINTING.”
“It’s alright Papyrus.” You sniffed; it smelled good. “What’s that you’ve got cooking?”
His spirits seemed to brighten instantly. “OH! WHY, HUMAN, IT IS MY FAVORITE AND BEST RECIPE FOR SPAGHETTI! ONLY THE BEST FOR MY DATE TONIGHT! HERE!” He held out his hands for you. “I WILL REMOVE YOUR COAT, SIR!”
You couldn’t help but giggle a bit at that, slipping out of your blazer. Honestly, it had been a little warm in the outfit - and, well, probably because of Papyrus’s outfit, you had felt a little overdressed. You were going to have to teach your boy about proper dating outfits.
‘Your boy’, you repeated in your head, feeling a soft blush rise to your cheeks as he hung up your coat. When had you started thinking of him that way?
“AND NOW, LET US EAT TOGETHER! AND THEN WE SHALL COMMENCE WITH THE DATE FURTHER!” Papyrus chatted away as he walked into the kitchen; you felt compelled to follow him, even if you hadn’t wanted to in the first place. He was just… God, his entire personality was so good. He was energetic, kind, and most of all, he just… believed so strongly in everything. In himself, in his friends…
In you.
It was like everything he said was made specifically to get you through your day, and even better, to do it with a smile. You’d never met someone quite as… optimistic as him. You couldn’t help but just be happy with him.
You felt your heart pound and, unlike the other times you had thought you’d felt that feeling, this time… it was surprisingly nice.
You both chatted absently through the (surprisingly tasty) dinner. He had definitely been practicing - either that, or Sans had secretly made dinner himself so that the date would go off without a hitch. You chose to believe the first idea, however. “God, Paps, that was delicious,” you said, wiping your mouth on a napkin. You’d been raised to be polite, after all, and you didn’t want to talk with spaghetti stains all over your face.
Papyrus blushed lightly, looking away. “WOWWIE… ANOTHER GENUINE COMPLIMENT.” You tilted your head softly. Something seemed different about him. “YOU ARE VERY KIND, HUMAN!” He sounded almost… you couldn’t really fit a word to it. Distracted? Lost in thought? Almost…
Dejected?
“Paps? What’s wrong?”
“W-WHAT? OH! NOTHING, HUMAN! ABSOLUTELY NOTHING IS WRONG WITH THE GREAT PAPYRUS, MASTER OF DATING AND ALSO OF BEING ABSOLUTELY FINE AND NOT-WRONG.”
You sighed softly, a tender smile taking to your lips. God, this goofball was incapable of lying. “Papyrus, you don’t need to lie to me. I don’t want you to! Now, what’s wrong?”
