MAGA extremists often rant about the so-called "deep state" which apparently means national defense, security, public safety, and regulatory bodies. The wannabe dictators prefer not to have checks and balances which can prevent them from going full-blown fascist. It's easier to get away with shit when you don't have to worry about accountability.
It's useful to see how such an attitude has already played out in another country.
Israel has been weakened by its own rightwingers who have eroded its security agencies with politics. Prime Minister Binyamin "Bibi" Netanyahu is the Israeli version of the so-called "Smart Trump" who many Republicans dream about. His rightwing governments have been running Israel for most of this century.
Bibi himself is still technically on trial on corruption charges. This year he and his coalition partners have attempted to strip the Israeli Supreme Court of many of its powers. And those partners, even more extremist than he is, had been dismissing security warnings from defense and intelligence agencies; of course those warnings abruptly turned out to be credible.
What’s happening in Israel now is a disturbing example of what can happen when elected officials use partisan and personal motivations to warp national security. For years, Republicans in Congress have attempted to sabotage what they call the “Deep State.” This includes placing holds on political nominees and castigating diplomats, officers and analysts employed in the government as captives to “Big Woke.” They might see it as political theater, necessary to boosting profiles and fundraising. But as this week shows, there can be a price. Reporting suggests that the hardline elements of Benjamin Netanyahu’s governing coalition were openly hostile to warnings from the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and security agency Shin Bet that settler violence would increase the security threat to Israel. One Likud member of parliament complained: “The ideology of the left has reached the top echelons of the Shin Bet. The deep state has infiltrated the leadership of the Shin Bet and the IDF.” Another Netanyahu coalition member stated, “We see there is confusion as to who is an enemy.”
Attacking Israel's armed forces (the IDF) and its version of the FBI (Shin Bet) for political reasons has not done a lot for public safety there. It's like being mean to your watch dog for barking a warning.
Hamas’ surprise attack has highlighted further national security dysfunction within the Netanyahu government. There are confirmed reports that Egyptian intelligence directly warned Netanyahu that “something fierce will happen from Gaza.” Allegedly, Netanyahu was indifferent to the warning, explaining that the IDF was “swamped” with terrorism threats in the West Bank. Israeli critics have stated that his coalition repeatedly ignored earlier warnings from Arab allies regarding rising levels of Palestinian frustration. Haaretz editorialized this week that, “a prime minister indicted in three corruption cases cannot look after state affairs, as national interests will necessarily be subordinate to extricating him from a possible conviction and jail time.”
Netanyahu's ignoring of the warnings about a potential Hamas attack reminds me of the infamous 06 August 2001 intelligence brief George W. Bush ignored with the title Bin Ladin Determined To Strike in US.
Here’s my question: Is Israel a harbinger for the United States? Are we getting a sneak preview of what will happen if Republicans succeed in their effort to exercise more control over the national security bureaucracy?
I think we all know the answer to that. Americans should worry.
The problem comes when elected officials and political appointees decide that in order to achieve their desired ends, they need to reduce entire national security institutions to rubble. And let’s be very clear: In 2023, all of the U.S. partisans engaging in such behavior are Republicans. Former president and likely future presidential nominee Donald Trump has set the tone here. The number of instances that the former president sabotaged U.S. national security while in office and afterwards is too long to recount in detail. There’s the blabbing of secrets to Russian officials in the Oval Office, the tweeting of classified photos, the refusal to return national security secrets once he left office, and the fact that he shared extremely sensitive information about the capabilities of U.S. nuclear submarines to Mar-a-Lago members, who in turn blabbed it to everyone. His behavior was so egregious that multiple former cabinet members — most recently John Kelly, Trump’s former White House chief of staff — have gone on the record to discuss the danger he poses. Back in June his attorney general, William Barr, warned on Face the Nation, “He will always put his own interests, and gratifying his own ego, ahead of everything else, including the country’s interests.”
It's not just Trump but also his sycophants and the wannabe Trumps.
Trump is the loudest but hardly the only Republican willing to sabotage the U.S. national security architecture. Other GOP presidential contenders have expressed an equally strident desire. Vivek Ramaswamy promised to “use executive authority to shut down the deep state.” His plans included firing 75 percent of the federal workforce and dismantling the FBI and Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has been even more violent in his rhetoric, promising one New Hampshire crowd that “all these deep state people … we’re going to start slitting throats on day one.”
Elon Musk fired 75% (or more) of Twitter staff the way that Vivek Ramaswamy wants to fire 75% of the federal government. We know how that's going.
Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville is currently using arcane Senate rules to damage the US armed forces.
The most obvious manifestation of this is Sen. Tommy Tuberville holding more than three hundred military promotions hostage unless the Pentagon stops funding travel for service women to receive abortions. This includes two selections for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as well as Middle East theater commanders for naval and ground forces. [ ... ] Marco Rubio has placed holds on multiple Biden nominees, as has Ted Cruz. The result is that, at present, the United States does not have confirmed ambassadors in Israel, Egypt, Lebanon and Kuwait. There has been no confirmed USAID official for the Middle East for close to three years, nor has there been a confirmed State Department Coordinator for Counterterrorism for nearly two years.
Raise your hand if you think it's kinda important to have a State Department Coordinator for Counterterrorism. 🙋🏽
Republicans would like to do to US national security what the far right Netanyahu government has done to Israel's.

Hi. I’m an Israeli seventeen-year-old living through an unimaginable generational trauma.
I’m writing this here because there are a lot of people living comfortably outside of the warzone and have absolutely no idea about the hell that is this conflict, and are spreading misinformation and narratives that are harmful for Israelis and Palestinians alike. I want people to know what it's like as a person who is living through this hell.
On October 7th when I woke up to missile alarm sirens, and when the news started flooding in of the massacres in Otef Aza, and when the number of those slaughtered began rising and didn't stop, and when the reality of what was going on began to sink in, I realized that I have no future.
I have no future when 1,400 people are brutally slaughtered in their homes. I have no future when murderers enter villages, behead babies, rape, murder and mutilate women, and burn whole families alive. I have no future when horrors like that happen and the world looks on and says nothing.
In the days that followed, when I saw the footage of airstrikes in Gaza, and when I saw the number of Palestinians killed, and when I heard of the hospital where refugees were hiding, I knew they - the Palestinian women, men, elderly, and children - have no future.
They have no future when the terorrist group Hamas forfeits them to death. They have no future when Hamas hides its bases among civilians so that they might serve as human shields. They have no future when they are killed for crimes they didn’t commit, because Hamas ordained them to do so.
This is not a war of Israel and Palestine. This is not a war of Jews and Arabs. This is not a war of oppressor and oppressed. This is a war about whether civilians - on either side of the Gaza border - can and should and must die so Hamas get what they want. This is a war about whether the world can stand aside and watch while Hamas slaughters thousands and then uses thousands more as human shields, and take the right side. This is a war about whether one thousand four hundred people being butchered is a reality that must be accepted. And this is a war about whether we ever let that ever happen again.
Because to be clear - this war can’t, shouldn’t, and won’t end until Hamas is totally and fundamentally destroyed, and its military and political influence eliminated. That's non-negotiable. Hamas committed unspeakable atrocities on October 7th, and they will pay. Not with Palestinian lives - because civilian lives are not currency to be paid, and Hamas don't care about them - but with their existence. At the end of this war, Hamas will not exist in any form with influence.
I’ll reblog this post with more information about Hamas, the war and where we can keep on from here.

From Resistance News Network on Telegram. Will post more info after I get some sleep.
1:14 am US Eastern time:
🚨 Last night, the IOF besieged and began opening fire on schools housing displaced people in Beit Hanoun in the northern #Gaza Strip.
Over 8 hours later, the IOF is continuing to besiege the displaced Gazans in the school, coinciding with nearly complete cutoff of Internet in the north.
3:24 am US Eastern time:
🚨 Local sources report that the IOF are forcing women and children to leave Beit Hanoun in the north of the #Gaza Strip after besieging the town's shelter centers, detaining young men, and mistreating them.

PALESTINE UPDATES 🇵🇸
Rafah is under attack by the IOF
Summary
Israel is now in full control of every border crossing into Gaza. They have cut off access to two of the most essential, Rafah and Karem Abu Salem (Kerem Shalom). Aid groups say Rafah's closure is especially devastating. The closure of the crossing since Sunday is having catastrophic impacts on everyone in Gaza.
Since October this has been the main point of entry for goods/aid coming into Gaza. Equally importantly, Rafah and Kerem Shalom are the only entry points for fuel in Gaza. Without fuel there's no ability for the trucks to move around. There's no ability for desalination plants to operate and provide safe water. There's no electricity.
Israeli military control of the Rafah checkpoint means it can decide fully which goods/aid can get in, and who can get out. Aid trucks are now stuck on the Egyptian side of the border. If we continue to see what we're seeing, it will lead to an even more catastrophic situation.
Alexandra Saieh Save the Children "We will likely see an acceleration in the rate of starvation. Even more people will die of malnutrition, dehydration and disease and a lack of medical assistance."
Israel is also moving forward with an assault/attack on other parts of Rafah, and has ordered about 100,000 people to leave the area. Fears are growing that an even larger operation is coming.
Alexandra Saieh Save the Children "There are hundreds of children who are maimed, who have lost one or more of their limbs. Many children who are malnourished. They're suffering from chronic illnesses. These people cannot flee by foot to another area."
It's seven months today Al Jeezera is marking of this horrific conflict.

legitimately insane how to some people, "we should wipe out this ethnic group that we've violently constrained to a ghetto because they're just genetically more violent and dangerous" is a reasonable and justifiable statement but it's Nazi Rhetoric to say something like, "it's bad that Israeli civilians are being killed but acknowledging that as tragic includes acknowledging that the almost daily state-sanctioned murder of civilians by the Israeli government is also tragic and unacceptable"
btw guys speaking of Nazi shit - can we check in, alongside what's been done to Palestinians in the last 75 years, what's the Israeli government's take on the Azerbaijani government's newest round of ethnic cleansing of Armenians? oh are the Israeli government's actions maybe not determined by Jewish identity, but by a commitment to colonial supremacy which puts them on the same page as other violently genocidal states like Azerbaijan, the US, and the UK? god can you Even Imagine?
(framing speaking against Israeli war crimes as inherently antisemitic requires understanding the Israeli state as representing all Jewish people, when it doesn't even represent all Israelis.
framing Israeli war crimes as synonymous with Jewish identity is pretty fucked up if we're being honest. I don't think that controlling water and power and movement for a captive population and shooting children dead for throwing stones is an inherent value of Judaism, any more than I think the torture carried out at Guantanamo Bay is an inherent value of Christianity - in both cases they're atrocities carried out by a far right genocidal government using religious identity as a shield.
Calling statements like "Israel is committing genocide against the people it's displaced" inherently antisemitic is doing more to further the idea that all Jewish people are associated with Israel than saying "the Israeli government is doing war crimes," which is a statement of fact about a country that exists and does war crimes. Is criticism of Israel as a nation often used as cover for antisemitism? Absolutely. Does that mean the Israeli government isn't doing literal war crimes repeatedly, on record, while talking publicly about scrubbing an ethnic group off the map? Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh well in the last 48 hours they've definitely cut off water and power to almost 600,000 civilians and allegedly used white phosphorus against civilians so in an extremely factual and unambiguous way yeah man those are Literal War Crimes whoever does them.)
#red said#sorry man saying 'it's bad to do genocide and war crimes' doesn't actually mean 'I'm happy when Jewish people die'#it means 'there is a context to Palestinian militants attacking Israelis which involves Palestinians being killed wounded or imprisoned#very nearly every day by the Israeli state and settlers. so no you can't treat a Palestinian attack on Israel as an unprecedented tragedy#without also recognising that Israeli forces have repeatedly visited attacks of similar magnitude on Palestine which is ALSO tragic#as well as the regular state-sanctioned murder of over 200 Palestinians in the 9 months BEFORE the Palestinian attack on Saturday#It means 'Palestinian lives don't matter less than Israeli lives' not 'Israeli lives don't matter'#this week is literally the FIRST TIME SINCE RECORDS BEGAN that more Israeli lives have been lost than Palestinian#bc for every year since 2000 orders of magnitude more palestinians than Israelis have been killed in this war#you don't get to say 'it's only bad when X ethnic group is killed it's GOOD to kill Y ethnic group' then accuse OTHERS of genocide apologis#it is legitimately a tragedy for Israeli civilians to be killed and wounded en masse. the people are not the nation.#but it's not less of a tragedy for Palestinians to have been killed and wounded en masse week after week for decades.#and when peaceful protest gets you shot and bombed and acting against the military gets you shot and bombed#and just existing doing nothing at all gets you shot and bombed. living near someone accused of terrorism. looking for your fucking cat.#when you're getting shot and bombed daily whatever you do. it's not surprising that sometimes people move to violence against civilians.#because as people from Gaza have said. better to die fighting for survival than die on your knees waiting.#which like. I'm not making a moral judgement one way or the other bc i am intrinsically disgusted by mass killing. as we all should be.#and this might be the movement which liberates Palestine and it might be the excuse which allows Israel to finish Palestine#and either way hundreds of people are dead on both sides and however you slice it that's a fucking tragedy#but we cannot. treat it as if Hamas' strike began the violence. and ignore the 200+ Palestinians killed by the IDF this year beforehand#Palestinian lives matter as much as Israeli lives. 700 Israeli citizens dead is a tragedy. 600 Palestinians dead is a tragedy.#and if you lay out the numbers from this weekend alone you can pretend that Israelis are getting decimated by Palestine.#but to do that you have to ignore the facts that for every 1 Israeli killed in the past decade 3 Palestinians die.#and that Israeli deaths happen in occasional outbursts of violence while Palestinian deaths happen every week#whether or not Hamas or any other Palestinian faction initiates violence

Civil Defense photographer Mahmoud Salem documents the harrowing rescue of two little boys, dazed but alive, from under the rubble of a destroyed building in north Gaza. First responders in Gaza are forced to dig people out from under rubble with their bare hands, due to the IOF blockade and sabotage destroying their equipment and supplies.

Hello,
I am Mohammad Al-Manasra, living amidst the ruins in a tent that offers no protection from the summer heat or winter cold. I lost my family in the war on Gaza, and now I live with my wife and three children in extremely difficult conditions. I seek your help to protect my family and provide for our basic needs. Your support in sharing my story would have a significant impact on us.
Mohammad, thank you for reaching out. I cannot imagine the pain you must feel after losing your parents, sisters, and family members. I sit here and imagine what that would be like for me, but I know I can't even begin to walk in your shoes. What you, your family, and all of Palestine are going through is much too traumatic for any human to bear. It is a genocide. I pray that you meet your goal soon, escape safely, and are able to live at peace with your loved ones.
Friends and followers, I'm pointing you towards Mohammad's account. It has been vetted by @90-ghost and others. Go read his story, reblog, and donate if you can.
Check out his GFM link, plus a definitive list of verified Tumblr campaigns below! Everything counts, and your support matters.
