As a twitter/tumblr user since 2010-2011, I believe I have sufficient grounds to say that currently we as a community are living through the scariest, shittiest time yet. This post isn’t trying to fearmonger, no I’m not leaving tumblr until it literally keels over, but I suggest that we don’t put all our eggs in one basket.
If twitter/tumblr stay usable, great! In the worse scenario, you’d have kept posting on a new platform and stayed ahead of the curve.
This post shares my personal experience with three potential “new”* fandom places, and is aimed to help fellow content creators. I’m an artist fully depending on internet to survive, my reasoning may not apply to you if you’re a hobbyist. Do your own research, it’s always healthy. * Pillowfort and mastodon have been around for 5+ years, bluesky is ~2 years old.
Discovering new people to follow kinda sucks on all three platforms, twitter and tumblr are eons ahead, but, given the recent chaos and uncertainty, I’m willing to be patient, keep posting on those, and feel safer than I would’ve otherwise been. More baskets good, one basket bad.
All three have poor visual customization, don’t expect custom tumblr themes.
This list starts with the least popular, but most human and easy to join, and what I personally trust the most. All three allow nsfw if labeled properly.
✦ Pillowfort is a barebones tumblr. Intuitive, cozy, but currently very, very small. Be patient with its clunkiness or lack of some features, it’s made by an AO3-like team. I’d personally love if the fandom crowd managed to redirect its attention to it instead of the sus bluesky.
Joining: is free, invite-only, but the waitlist is nearly instant.
Lurk around on their official tumblr: @/pillowfort-social
✦ Mastodon, for me personally, is impossible to explain directly. I’ll use several comparisons.
- Discord but all servers can interact. You’re still on a server curated by some human(s) that might tell you what you can and can’t post, BUT, if you don’t like that server’s policy, you can move to a new one while keeping your followers. - Email, users A and B may be registered on different domains, still they can talk. It’s a weird comparison, but fediverse (please I’m not explaining THAT but it’s a good thing) in general looks like another email story: unlike big sites that come and go, it might stand the test of time. - Someone compared mastodon’s structure to xiv’s dc and servers, if you look at its domain names that way, it might be easier to understand.
Depending on user, mastodon may feel gatekeepy/snowflakey. I haven’t spent enough time on there to form a proper opinion yet, but a warning’s due.
An actually good and hopeful thing about mastodon AND tumblr: the two might start interacting in future. Ever lamented that your fav asian artists don’t use tumblr? If they use misskey, or any other place on the fediverse, it might be possible to follow them directly from tumblr in future, and vice versa.
Joining: is free, however some servers close for new members sometimes, and have human moderators reviewing your request.
✦ Bluesky is a twitter without Musk: today’s average internet user reads this, drops everything and already looks to register there. It’s still sus, but people flock to it like crazy. Most likely to become the next big fandom place in my eyes, even if I’m not happy about that.
I personally have no good feelings about bluesky. Same as twitter, which I hated even before the 2018 tumblr exodus, yet the crowd decided to make it The New Fandom Place, and, grudgingly, I had to give up and also join them in 2022. During the year I haven’t stopped despising twitter, yet, I can’t deny that it helped me survive. I estimate half of my patrons, and, hell, even tumblr audience, comes from twitter. So, if bluesky ends up being the next hot shit, I’ll have to keep up because internet pays for my living.
Joining: is free but hell, invite-only, the waitlist is a lie, your best chance to join is a direct invite.
This’s all I’ve got to say for now. If you have a correction or an addition, replies/reblogs are welcome!
Screenshots of the current interfaces under the cut, you may spy on my profiles o/

i have to say its a strange experience taking classes on branding and marketing while being vehemently anticapitalist and scorning the economic system
#i shit you not ill be in class and theyre talking abt how to make brands memorable and use words to describe their tone and feel#and at the same time i see starbucks endorsing genocide and greedflation and AI techbros scheming us into extinction#its extremely fucking dystopian. and its even worse when u have teachers telling u to use chatGPT and midjourney for#placeholder text and images. like damn. this is really the industry im going into huh#i feel complicit doing this because i want to pursue graphic design but its chilling to see ppl get really worked up abt branding#do u not feel used?? doesnt it feel like youre giving a faceless entity a mask to gloss over the ugly parts?? cuz i do#i get excited at the design and UX aspect of things like how people think and how design and user interfaces are planned around how#we think and act. but when the endgoal becomes marketing or doing it for companies it just feels like a waste#like i think this is what bill watterson meant when he didnt want calvin and hobbes to be commercialized#i dont want to do anything else unless it comes to that like i change my career path somewhere down the line. but fuck dude#im just gonna keep using unsplash and lorem ipsum as much as i can because i sure as hell dont wanna add to the problem if i cant solve it#yapping#vent

i think the near-extinction of people making fun, deep and/or unique interactive text-based browser games, projects and stories is catastrophic to the internet. i'm talking pre-itch.io era, nothing against it.
there are a lot of fun ones listed here and here but for the most part, they were made years ago and are now a dying breed. i get why. there's no money in it. factoring in the cost of web hosting and servers, it probably costs money. it's just sad that it's a dying art form.
anyway, here's some of my favorite browser-based interactive projects and games, if you're into that kind of thing. 90% of them are on the lists that i linked above.
A Better World - create an alternate history timeline
Alter Ego - abandonware birth-to-death life simulator game
Seedship - text-based game about colonizing a new planet
Sandboxels or ThisIsSand - free-falling sand physics games
Little Alchemy 2 - combine various elements to make new ones
Infinite Craft - kind of the same as Little Alchemy
ZenGM - simulate sports
Tamajoji - browser-based tamagotchi
IFDB - interactive fiction database (text adventure games)
Written Realms - more text adventure games with a user interface
The Cafe & Diner - mystery game
The New Campaign Trail - US presidential campaign game
Money Simulator - simulate financial decisions
Genesis - text-based adventure/fantasy game
Level 13 - text-based science fiction adventure game
Miniconomy - player driven economy game
Checkbox Olympics - games involving clicking checkboxes
BrantSteele.net - game show and Hunger Games simulators
Murder Games - fight to the death simulator by Orteil
Cookie Clicker - different but felt weird not including it. by Orteil.
if you're ever thinking about making a niche project that only a select number of individuals will be nerdy enough to enjoy, keep in mind i've been playing some of these games off and on for 20~ years (Alter Ego, for example). quite literally a lifetime of replayability.

Nothing makes me lose interest more in a visual novel where the text speed is slower than I can read.
#sometimes i'm willing to work around by setting the text speed to the slowest possible so i can double click for faster text#because if it's too fast i can sometimes double click through text i didn't want to skip#it's better on renpy vns because mousewheel doesn't completely mess the user interface with a log that takes me out of the experience#but like just have the text be instant (you are allowed to let it be slow for effect sometimes just not all the time)

Ignoring that this is not taking user experience in mind and is objectively bad app design I hate this new update for tablets because as a person who deals with uncontrolled jerking in my hands I often find myself swiping too far and it sucks 👎
#text#sorry not to pull the 'this is ableist' card#just literally What#horrible. wtf#a user interface should be easily discernable by new users with context clues.#how will an unlabeled slider accomplish that?#is Tumblr firing profit lowering shots rn#i don't get it.

Honestly so relieved to be back on linux where my biggest problem how to make my computer recognize my external hard drive, and I know how to solve that
#This is honestly not meant as shade on windows (users)#mad respect to anyone who can make windows11 work for them. I'm definitely not one of those people#too much set in my ways one could say#birdypersonal#like I'm definitely not the biggest pro#I kept to Ubuntu for a reason#(although all your linux folks' love for ARCH definitely made me curious and I think I'm going to run that on a VM just for fun ...#... but not for my main personal use computer)#but I have a solid grasp of how the system works generally#and I know how to google all the stuff that I need and how to understand the manuals and --help for the commands and so on#solvable problems with logical solutions - I like that#computer stuff#linux#Also a MAJOR plus is the customization of the interface. That I get to have a really lean and text-based GUI#I don't like clutter on my desktop and much less in my file system

today was the day we finalized the migration of essential software at work from some old and busted shit that was ready to die at any time, to the new cloud version of the same software that we are no longer responsible for maintaining. which is good because no one was actually maintaining ours. it's just been slowly crufting into unusability for a decade. so anyway they set aside an hour for a teams meeting where they'd walk us through the different interface and how to go through normal processes.
"it's not that big a change," they said. "it's all the same stuff, it just looks a little different," they said.
they did not account for the fact that the primary user of this software is someone who doesn't actually know how it works or what it's doing. they learned how to do their job entirely through rote memorization. they know which buttons they are supposed to press in which order, and that is the full extent of what they know. they also did not account for the fact that this person's processes were learned thirdhand from other people who were not using this software normally to begin with.
it's like. imagine if someone had only ever used tumblr in the app. and you try to get them to use it in a desktop browser, but they cannot figure out how to post. and you go through explaining where the button is and how to format text and add tags, even though you could have sworn it was all the same in the app. but then they're like, "okay, but what's the phone number" and you're like "what" and they're like "the phone number to call to make a post?" and it turns out somehow they still had the ability to post by calling a phone number, and every time they posted on the app they called the post in first and then edited the audio post to transcribe it into text before screenshotting the text for a photo post. and nothing you can say to them will make them understand that none of that is necessary or correct. they shouldn't have even been able to do some of that. they can just type into the post box now, like a civilized person. "okay," they say, "but what is the phone number, though? because when i made my account my friend gave me this checklist and the first thing on it is to call the number."
so anyway we were on that teams call for almost three hours and they still don't have a handle on the new software
#original#boring work stuff#i am looking forward to being out of town during the week they have to do the actual complicated stuff lmfao

why do no anime sites have the show im watching in decent resolution :/ it's bizarre bc the site i USED to watch it on got shut down, and it had good res, and every other site has the exact same fansubs but in 2005 youtube quality. why
#the only one i can find is a site that literally just ripped the taken-down site's entire library#and it has a terrible user interface#(and the frankly BIZARRE choice to show most recent user comments in its sidebar....#all comments sections are bad but pirate anime site comment sections are the Worst)#oh yeah i can find versions with soft subs. but i hate soft subs they are so much worse than a lovingly crafted fansub#i mean soft subs are fine sometimes but theyre shit if you have like. characters speaking and also text on screen

Transcription: I posted this in 2021. We are in 2024 and AO3 UI is still not available in others languages then English. I think I'm gonna ask @/SquidgeORG if this would be doable on #Squideworld in the very far future
Reblog of: What I would love to see is UI translations in other languages then EN, like FR for me, but I know it's a lot of work.

The fact that if someone posts a link to a tumblr post in a reply I cannot navigate to it using the tumblr app highlights the reason I hate apps replacing websites.
There’s nowhere in the tumblr app to enter a URL—your only option is to search up a user name and then try to find the post manually
If you copy-paste the link to a web browser like Firefox you get a login-prompt doorslam as soon as you scroll, even if you’re logged into the app.
You cannot easily click on a button from the webpage to load the post in the app
Even copy-pasting the URL is a PITA because the iOS tumblr app doesn’t actually let you select a portion of the text of a reply, only copy the whole thing to the clipboard.
I really hate the way apps break basic interface functionality that’s been standard for decades across different web browsers, to deliver content that is fundamentally just a webpage. @staff please fix this very annoying UI issue at least
