Y/N’s POV

I rolled out of bed when I heard my alarm go off. I’ve had a motivation block lately (don’t ask me where I came up with that). Some days I just don’t have the energy to get in front of a camera because that said energy gets sucked out from work. Work can be a pain in the ass sometimes, however it brings in money that pays bills even helps with the channel. When I first started the channel, I didn’t have a lot of equipment. I started off with the bare minimum with the money I had leftover from paying bills. Once I had the starting equipment like a microphone, headphones, camera, etc., then I had to come up with the channel name. I ended up with y/c/n because it sounded like me. I knew from the start that I wouldn’t get a lot of views, still that didn’t help my anxiety any.

I try not to let things get to me, though it can be hard when you constantly don’t feel like you’re good enough. Anxiety and overthinking can make a person feel like that, even in situations that have nothing to do with you, yet you still worry about things you can’t control. I started getting ready for work, already dreading going in. Hoping that maybe today would be an easy day.

It wasn’t an easy day, it was actually the worst really. I am actually glad it’s the weekend though. I’ll have to rest up before I start up a new video. I’ve gotten into the routine of posting at least one to two videos a week (three if I’m feeling frisky). That way I can have time to go in and make edits of what I’ve recorded. I learned how to get a little creative with my videos over time, especially when I started moving my hands around when I’m talking. ‘You mean when you start rambling about a topic for hours?’ I hear my inner thoughts say.

I decided to take the rest of the day to relax since I have been running around all day at work. ‘I’ll just start filming tomorrow. That way I’m rested up from this hectic week and can be productive these next couple of days.’ I tell myself.

The Following Day

Taking a sip of my freshly brewed coffee, I hummed in delight. I took in my surroundings now that I have some caffeine in my system. It was a beautiful day outside. Feeling the morning breeze blow through the air ruffling the trees. Being able to sit on the back porch and take in the scenery with a cup of coffee in your hand makes everything feel simpler. Easier. Just for a moment.

I knew today would be a little busy for me but that’s what happens when you decide to make a YouTube reaction channel, especially when it’s about K-Pop. I had recently seen where I’ve now reached over 300K followers on YouTube. I need to make sure I mention that in my video. I didn’t do it once and the fans didn’t like that, not that I didn’t want to do it. I just didn’t pay it any attention. If I did that would really make my anxiety level go up and I don’t need that.

After finishing my coffee, I decided to go ahead and get started on making some new videos. I pulled my computer and monitors up, making sure that my microphone and headphones were up and ready to go. The last thing being my camera. Checking my monitor to make sure I have it positioned where I want it and that my main screen, where I show what I’m watching, is up as well. Once everything is to my liking, I take a deep breath and think about something that makes me happy to brighten up my mood. Clicking the record button, counting to three, I start my intro.

“Good Morning Lovelies! How are y’all doing this morning?” Taking a pause, I start again. “I hope you’re all doing well. Eating well, sleeping well, and going outside to enjoy the weather. It’s pretty outside today. I decided I’d have my morning coffee out there. Maybe next time I’ll film a little video for y’all, I’d think you’d enjoy it as well. Anyways before I get off track, today we are going to be watching the newest SKZ Code that came out recently. I always wait in case there’s a part two. So that way I can watch it back to back and not wait for the second part to come out. I believe most of you know this by now, though we also have new followers who don’t know that. Now I’m getting off track, haha. I can’t help it y’all, you know this. Okay! Let’s get started before I talk your ear off.” I smile looking at my main monitor that holds my videos for the day. I write down on my sticky notes nearby about the 300K followers so that way I don’t forget. I play the videos that I prepared for the day, laughing my ass off at the boys being silly. Occasionally wiping a stray tear from laughing so hard. Stopping to talk about my favorite parts or having to go back and rewatch a part just to laugh twice as hard as the first time.

Towards the end I look down at the sticky note I prepared. Getting ready to end the video I tell myself what I need to say. “Well, that’s it for the video today! I hope enjoyed it as much as I did, but before I let you go I have some thing I need to say. This channel just hit the 300K subscribers within this past week!! I’m so happy that people love watching Stray Kids as much as I do. I do more than just Stray Kids on here, but my Stray Kids videos get way more views than the others. I don’t like being biased to just one group but Stray Kids has always been the closest to my heart and I know my fellow Stays know that as well. And to Stray Kids if you ever see this, I hope you know just how much we love and appreciate everything that you do.” I smile at the camera. “Thank you everyone for supporting me and continuing to support me. Until then I will see you in the next video.” I do a two finger salute to the camera. “Bye!”

Beyla is submitter's lovely 6 year old pastel tortie! She is FIV positive, asymptomatic, and very very sweet. One time she ate an entire pasta noodle. This was around when we first got her but I still think about it sometimes. She hasn't done it since.

I was hyperfixated on learning about Norse mythology when we named her so her name comes from Beyla, a servant of Freyr and a goddess of bees herself. Fittingly one of the nicknames we have for her is Bee

She managed to move her dinner time to one hour earlier than it was originally by sheer force of will and nonstop pestering

She constantly looks kinda mad when she's just chillin' but it's just her face shape. If she was mad we would be informed in the way of her getting up and walking away.

BTS Tutorial: gift cards for multiple iTunes

Today I set up 4 extra iTunes accounts and then I redeemed gift cards from JIMIN FUNDS to make more purchases of Set Me Free Pt. 2.

I will break down the experience for you so you might feel more comfortable doing this too, or if you know of someone who really wants to help but is pinching pennies.

But first--let me start by saying: there is a really good post over here about why it's important to avoid working with solos and antis. I do not want any drama on my blog and I never wish to cause harm to any BTS member. So I DMed Jimin Funds and straight up asked them if they were solos and/or didn't love all the members of BTS... and they flat-out said "No! It's Jimin OF BTS 100% of the time!!"

So after interacting with them a lot today, I believe they are a Jimin-biased account on Twitter but real ARMY in their personal lives, just like me. However, it seems they will take donations from anyone--including shippers, solos, OT7s, multis, who and whatever--and they will distribute to anyone buying for Jimin--including shippers, solos, OT7s, multis, who and whatever. If you wanna help Jimin, they will empower you to do so and not put you through a lot of questions to "vet" you about it. They are acting like a safe middle man.

But Jimin Funds themselves are NOT SOLOS and are actually very nice. It was 3am where they live and they were diligently still up and getting funds into the hands of ARMY like me, answering questions, making connections and suggestions. I have followed their twitter for months and they have never shaded any member and they work hard for Jimin as far as I can see, so I have no qualms working with them, but you do you. You can search for OT7 funding accounts on Twitter and use them by all means!! Please do not bring drama to my blog. I will force you to ride the drama llama if you do.

Anyway, Jimin Funds have bought hundreds of gift cards so folks can afford to buy Jimin's single and title track. Right now they are prioritizing digital sales for US and PR ARMYs but reach out to them with questions for other options.

I will walk you through how it's done, in case you wanted to do it but weren't feeling comfy and so are still on the fence.

First up, I have an iTunes account under my real name with my real life credit card and that's what I use for my main music buying, just in my real every day life outside of being ARMY. I also have 5 other fandom gmails I made, which I'm constantly cycling through to vote, stream, engage on social media, and make purchases. So today I logged out of my main iTunes and I set up accounts there with my other emails. I could only set up 4 other accounts, because iTunes limits you to 5 emails per credit card.

I input the same birthday, same address, same security questions, same credit card. Used different handle names based on the gmail address so I can keep it all straight in my mind. These 5 accounts are tied to me, one user, BUT IF I USE A GIFT CARD TO BUY, the 5 accounts' purchases count separately for the charts.

So I DMed Jimin Funds and they individually released $2 iTunes electronic fund codes to me via DM and I purchased Set Me Free four more times, and sent them screenshots and my thanks.

They did not ask me for my name, address, credit card info--nothing. I just told them the email I'd be using and as a courtesy gave them a screenshot of my iTunes account with that purchase showing them that I spent their funds as they'd intended. I feel safe that I will not be data mined just because they know those shell email addresses.

They asked me to please use the remaining funds on each gift card to purchase Like Crazy when it drops, which I will definitely be doing.

All told, I will have bought Jimin's physical album 6 times and his digital album 5 times on iTunes and 3 times elsewhere, plus I will stream nonstop on 3 devices using 6 free trial premium accounts for 24 straight hours. I'm not sure what else I can realistically do but I'm all ears if you have suggestions.

Please reply to this post with links if you know of accounts funding the entire digital album on March 24th.

I have no idea how much it will end up costing on iTunes, but the average price of an EP is around $10-$12. That can add up for folks, I know, but sales are EXTREMELY IMPORTANT especially considering the names Jimin is trying to chart against, without radio play.

And yes, I will say that streaming is important too, of course it is, but you have to stream something 150 times for it to count as one sale. If we can make use of up to 5 iTunes accounts and spend down all the donated funds ARMY has collected, that will help Jimin chart higher, faster.

The only thing required of you is the time and effort it takes to set up extra iTunes accounts, redeem a gift card code, and click to purchase two songs. It's way less work than streaming for 24 hours straight (though I'll be doing that too, because what is love if not sleep deprivation?)

Hey my people I love u and I missed posting.

First of all, happy sankranti (and bhogi) to all those who celebrate!!

Sankranti is a South Indian festival often celebrated around this time of the year. I'm part of the many people who celebrate it.

So, the new semester started recently. So of course, I'll update you all about it.

9th january 2024, tuesday: Registration of courses.

This is the day we get back to campus and register for the courses for the semester. This doesn't mean we have an option to pick out courses on our own but you just, choose your profs uk?

That morning I cried a little because I didn't want father to leave (like how kids cry on their first day of school you know). I just didn't want vacation to end.

10th january 2024, wednesday: First day of classes!!

First hour I had management tutorial. The professor was pretty fun. We have the same prof for lectures too. He started with definition of business after a little warm up kinda session. During that session he basically introduced himself, rules he'd like to follow in tutorials and lectures, gave us a little survey with general questions like "favorite color, favorite movie" and other questions like "what do you think you'd learn in this course?"

Then we had a math lecture which got cancelled .

Then we had a pharmaceutical formulations lecture which was also pretty fun. Our professor legit looked like a rockstar (kiiiiind of?). He started with the question "have you ever taken drugs?" And everyone went "sir u gotta specify which kinda drugs" and he's just like "nope not doing that just answer. Drugs." Haha

Then we had a management lecture where we continued the first chapter.

Then we were supposed to have our first anatomy lab but we didn't and they said the labs will start from next week.

11th january 2024, Thursday: my first ever workshop!!!

I had a free morning today. I didn't have any classes from 8 to 9.

Then I had a chem lecture which was hard to understand. But okay.

Then I had workshop!!!!

We were divided into groups and i was in a group with 5 other girls and 4 other boys. This is the part where I low key degraded myself for almost the whole 3 hours of the workshop because of my communication skills which suck.

Then i had lunch.

I was supposed to have a math tutorial but that got cancelled.

Then I had an anatomy lecture which was kinda fun. Not as fun as pharmaceutical formulations or management but definitely fun.

12th january 2024, Friday: FRIDAY😭😭

Fridays are like, the most hectic days of the week this semester.

I have nonstop classes from 8 to 3 and then lab from 4 to 6. So technically, just an hour break from 8 to 6.

Howeverrrrr, today turned out a little okay.

First, I had a workshop lecture which was kinda boring. Then I was supposed to have math which got cancelled. During this break, me and my friend bought ourselves some snacks to eat between classes because we're too packed to have proper lunch. Then I had a formulations tutorial, which of course was interesting. Then I had a management lecture, again interesting. Then I had a chem tutorial where i struggled to stay awake.

Then, from 1 to 3, i was supposed to have lab (reason why I can't have lunch). But it was only for an hour cuz it's the first lab and it was only intro. By the time I got to the mess, it was 2 (closing time) but luckily there was food so i ate my lunch for this Friday.

I did a few chores and errands for myself before I went for my chem lab at 4 o clock. Before that, my friend and I read in the library for around 20 minutes. Chem lab was only for half an hour, because again, ✨ introduction✨.

after that, we both goofed around for a while before her father came to pick us up from campus and take us away for the festival.

2. Sapphire was prone to eating a LOT of weird things as a child, and was not limited to throwing up on poor Estella when they didn't agree with his stomach.

3. Mouse has eaten roadkill before.

4. Amor tried to take selfies of himself in the bathroom before, and accidentally tripped and smashed his head against the mirror and broke it. He refuses to acknowledge it happened or that he did it, even though Ivy was in the bathroom when it happened and constantly brings it up when he sees Amor posting on social media.

5. No alarm in the fucking WORLD will wake Kaba up, not even an earthquake, not even those ear piercingly loud ones that could wake up satan himself. An explosion could go off, and she wouldn't move a muscle.

6. Mouse ate Neige's makeup a lot when they were little. They also ate pretty much anything they could fit in their mouth.

7. After a basketball game, Lux tried to slap Azira's back, and Azira quickly dodged it, and they ended up smacking themself in the face full force.

8. Sapphire constantly tries to give/feed Faira cat nip to see what'll happen.

9. Poison drinks copious amounts of coffee and will even eat handfuls of straight up coffee beans. They drank so much one time, they physically started to shake and vibrate for three hours, then when it wore off he passed out and didn't move from his position for a solid 14 hours.

10. Sting likes to trap bugs in cups and containers, and spray them with bug spray till they die. She also enjoys burning them with magnifying glasses, or using lighter and hair spray to light them on fire.

11. Lux was dropped on accident as a baby once. Ace did it, and has never told anyone, and often thinks to himself that it's the reason Lux acts the way he is now.

12. Faira has owned over ten birds, and they keep dying in the weirdest ways imaginable. The last one died because Che'nya went to feed it, it got scared and had a heart attack, and died. Faira now brings his bird to school and keeps it in his room.

13. Virsk has a huge social media platform.

14. The only time Crystal has ever gone on a roller coaster was when she was eleven, and her harness broke and she almost fell out of the cart when it made a loop. She now cries at any mention of going on a roller coaster.

15. Lilith got a coat hanger stuck in Aba's eye when they were 8 and 7.

16. Toxic will shock Kaba with electricity out of no where, and she can't do shit because she knows he won't stop.

17. Azira has peppersprayed Ivy before because he wouldn't go away. Ivy wasn't even asking him out or trying to flirt, he was just being annoying.

18. Glitch is not allowed on Twitter.

19. Sometimes the shadows will just tease Spider, liking to annoy them whether than threaten their life because it amuses them more. They've jumpscared them in the shower, flipped over their bed at night, hid and stolen their shit in the most obscure places, whispered in their ear that they're gay nonstop, and made their food vanish.

20. Lux stole one of Amor's scarfs, and put it on a teddy bear he would practice flirting with. Amor only found out about this when MC posted a video on snapchat (Or whatever the magic equivalent is) of Lux flirting with the bear, and had the caption "Rizz" on it. Note, MC had no idea what this word meant at the time but had heard it before. Lux proceeded to throw away the scarf when he found out, and now none of them talk about it.

21. Quin ate many strange things as a child, and has miraculously survived. These items include three buttons, 28 sewing needles Crewel owned, a patch of fabric, three sticks, the ink in an ink pen, two double A batteries, multiple hair pins, the liquid inside Crewel's eyeliner, Multiple cigarette buds, and multiple coins.

22. Ivy caught Dove kissing a mop before to practice kissing when they were younger, and he laughed so hard he nearly peed himself.

I had to actually double check I shuffled, because this is in the most recent like, ten songs I've liked. Also, it fucking slaps I love it so much. I've listened to it on repeat for like, hours, and I'm still not tired of it. (This is very rare, normally I play songs until I hate them.)

2: Killer in the Mirror (by Set It Off)

Set It Off! I'm glad they are here, they are probably my favorite band like, by the numbers. I've listened to their entire discography and liked half of it. (They're like, angry white boy punk rock, but not quite as misogynistic as most of that genre feels.) This song in particular reminds me of taking long walks through this park near one of my old apartments, because I did that a lot while I was in my listening-to-set-it-off phase.

I still sometimes seek out Set It Off and listen to their songs! I have not totally played them out, which is cool.

3: This Ain't Nothing (by Craig Morgan)

Country Music! This is an important part of my, like, history or whatever. I grew up listening to country music, so it will permanently have a soft spot in my art even though a lot of it is Big Yikes. This song is Little Yikes. I still like it! I had a big country kick last year where I liked a whole bunch of country songs from the nineties and early aughts that lasted about two weeks (a good two weeks though!) Anyways that was before I transitioned most of country music feels worse because i know the singers would hate me now anyways!

4: NONSTOP (by OH MY GIRL)

K-pop! I love k-pop! There is respectable k-pop, and then there's horny pandering k-pop. This is horny pandering k-pop. Not maximally so (thank god I didn't get stuck with any EXID songs), but still pretty pandery! Anyways I listened to this song... NONSTOP (heh, but actually). I really like it.

I got into k-pop when I was learning Korean, and it stuck because it is objectively Peak Pop.

5: Whiskey Lullaby (feat Allison Krauss) (by Brad Paisley)

It's the Country Suicide Song! It's about suicide! It was very popular when I was in high school! It's also very good! Probably don't listen to it if you are troubled by suicidal ideation!

It contains the line "So he a bottle to his head, and pulled the trigger", which is a line that has lived rent free in my head for the last like fifteen years.

(Also yes, that is the Accidental Racist guy. This other stuff is better than that.)

6: 東京IMAGINE (by Carat) (Read "Tokyo IMAGINE")

J-pop! I have listened to a lot of J-pop because when I immerse myself in Japanese I also try and listen to lots of Japanese music. Tragically, I generally don't like Japanese music as much as I like English or Korean music. It sucks, and I am very mad about it. My life is very hard.

This song slaps, though. I found Carat fairly recently, and I love them a lot.

7: Maybe You're the Problem (by Ava Max)

Ava Max! I found her in the last year and I love her music so much. It is very Angry Heterosexual Girl Power which is sometimes a surprise to me because I sometimes forget straight women exist. Her songs rock, though. Probably the first genuinely excellent Spotify Radio I've ever had was based on an Ava Max song, where I got more Ava Max songs and a whole bunch of other pop artists with similar sounds.

8: Empire (by Beth Crowley)

I have nothing in particular to say about this song. I recognized the name, but didn't actually remember what it sounds like. I'm listening to it now, though, and I remember it and it slaps. I dig it.

9: Tic Tic Toc (by T-ARA)

T-ARA! One of my first favorite k-pop bands! I found T-ARA through the Japanese covers of their own songs when I was doing japanese immersion way back when. I loved those songs so much, I listened to them so much like... way back in sophomore year of college. I still love them, but not quite as much as I loved them then. This is not my favorite of their songs.

Also I hear there was some pretty horrible in-group bullying that went on in that group which makes me vaguely uncomfortable when I listen to them.

10: Get the F*ck out of Here (by Kobra and The Lotus)

I legit didn't recognize this song name, but I recognized the first couple bars when I played it. It slaps, but I have no particular feelings about it. It is metal, though! That is good! I like metal a lot, and it's important that it's represented here. Alas, I wish this was Battle Beast, my Favorite Metal Band. Or, alternatively, Smash into Pieces, the most prolific band in all of history which I mostly like.

didn’t want to say this in the tags of that post but i remember googling “is 23 old” like a week or two after that birthday and finding some article that was clearly meant to be encouraging but to a genre of person that i absolutely am not. like i remember it contained the line “by 23 you’re (hopefully) done with college” and i as a 23-year-old high school dropout who grew up as an isolated shut-in in a college town where pretty much the only thing to do was go to college and therefore felt like a complete failure for never going to college was just like Oh god. Oh fuck. and i tried to *** and wound up involuntary hospitalized not long after that. and when i got out i decided i was too embarrassing of a person to even make posts online so i didn’t use this website for like 4 months. and it was 2020 so it felt like the world had already ended without me ever having a chance to really live. and i had a horrible job in a grocery store bakery waking up at 3am every day to come in and bake bread at 5am every day while listening to my insane ex-coworker justine talk about qanon nonstop for hours. and that july one coworker had to be out for surgery and right after she left another one caught covid(and neither one of the aforementioned coworkers was justine!) so the rest of us had to work 6 days a week. and on my 23rd birthday i had worked 14 of the prior 15 days. and that was my first Real Job(as in not online transcription done from my room in the dead of night) so i had no way of knowing for sure that that level of workplace misery was in fact Not Normal. and my sleep schedule never adjusted despite my best efforts so i was lucky to get 5 hours of sleep per night. and they screwed up and had me listed in the system as a part-time employee even when i was working 48 hours per week so i missed out on multiple holidays i should’ve accumulated as well as a dollar-per-hour raise i should’ve gotten. and i remember when they had me handcuffed in the ambulance i kept screaming, “you can’t do this to me! i have work in the morning! i’m gonna lose my job!” and the emt got fed up with me and yelled back, “maybe so!” and then when my dad had a stroke 3 months later that SAME emt showed up and we recognized each other. and then that next february my dad almost died AGAIN after his colonoscopy went wrong and he nearly bled out internally from where they nicked a vein removing a polyp. and my great-grandma died that same month and the day of her funeral when i woke up at 3am i heard the neighbor’s cat get eaten by a coyote right outside my window. and then the day i finally got my license was the same day jessica walter died and a month and a half later i drove cross-country to los angeles by myself, scored a job interview 3 days later that turned out to be a complete waste of time, got into a crash on the way back that totaled my car, was pressured into getting a rental car that i drove for maybe 10 minutes before some guy merged on top of me, swore off driving forever, and was then stuck for the next 27 days in the airbnb i’d chosen specifically because i was expecting to have a car. also i did not eat carbs even once that entire year. it was beyond horrible

Would you say you're addicted to social media?: Nah, I’ve certainly toned down in the last few years. When I was a teenager I used to post 100, 200 tweets in a day; but I can now go days without tweeting anything. Same with my other accounts. I mostly check social media just to see if the boys posted anything new, lol.

How many pets have you had in your lifetime?: I’ll never know for sure because we used to have lots of goldfish. But apart from those, I can count 8 - two lovebirds, a rabbit, a chick, a cat, and three dogs.

Do you sunburned easy?: I had really bad sunburns as a kid, but I haven’t had any since.

Of all the houses you've lived in, which was your favorite?: This current one. It’s the first one that my immediate family can say is ours in every sense of the word, so it’s just nice to live someplace quiet and without extended family especially considering that the latter is the usual setting in Filipino households. I love my extended family, but I also like living in a house with just five people in it lol.

Do you or would you ever use online dating?: I did, but only for the ego boost after my breakup. It felt nice seeing people wanting to match with me, honestly. That was really all I needed lol - after I felt good enough and validated, I deleted the app since I was never on there to pursue a fling or another relationship altogether. What do you wish you could get paid for?: Watching videos on YouTube since I pretty much do it nonstop.

What did you get into trouble for as a kid?: Playing outside for too long. My grandma was pretty strict and we had a rule that we had to be back inside by 6, but we were kids and we liked breaking that rule so that we got to play outside for longer.

What's something good that has happened here recently?: My (now former) work wife aka Kata started her new job this week and I couldn’t be any happier for her. It’s high time that she started spreading her wings to explore other opportunities and boy is she also fucking swimming in money in her new position! Hahahaha.

Do you remember the first time you've ever driven a car? How did that go?: Yeah, but it was nothing notable. I used our super old Mitsubishi Lancer to drive around the village and nearly grazed the passenger side mirror by a wall.

Back Again

This weekend I took an impromptu trip to Los Angeles. (Okay, so it wasn't exactly impromptu but I can't say the real reason yet 🤫.) I've been jittery all week, but it wasn't until I was actually on the plane and the pilot announced, "Welcome to Flight blah blah, nonstop to LA. Our flight today will be 5 hours and 36 minutes. We will be departing shortly," that it actually hit me. I'll be going home this weekend.

I know that sounds crazy, to refer to a place I've been to 3 times (soon to be 4) for a total of about 6 weeks as "home." But that's genuinely how it feels to me. It just feels...correct.

New York hasn't felt that way in a long time for me. In fact, ever since I got back from LA last summer, a deep-seated resentment of New York has been slowly festering within me. It's strange, I used to love New York. I used to dream of having a big loft-style apartment in the heart of Manhattan. Now I'm itching to leave not just the city, but the whole state.

How did this happen? I can't know for sure, but I believe there are two reasons. The first boils down to all the trauma I've sustained over the last ten years. College was far and away the worst period of my life, and I would hardly call the years after that "better." I think on some level New York was basically ruined for me.

The other contributing factor is that I simply never imagined I could live far away from my family, which is also essentially my support system. And I'm not just talking about my immediate family. I'm quite close with my extended family as well. All of them, with one exception, live in the tri-state area, or at least close by. The idea of living in Los Angeles wasn't even on my radar. And why would I even dream of it, when I loved New York so much? But then I went to LA for the first time in 2018, and suddenly it was a possibility. And as time passed and I continued to grow and heal, it became even more of a possibility.

A few weeks ago, I made a post alluding to a decision I had made. I suppose this is the Part 2.

Right before New Years, I made the impulse decision to apply to grad school, something I always said I would never do. Yet, I had a sudden urge to make that leap. At the time, it felt like the right choice. I've been in and out of the game, as I call it, for a while now, and what better way to firmly get back in than to go back to school? This time would be different. I was undiagnosed while I was in college, but now that I know I'm autistic, I would be able to navigate school better and hopefully get some kind of accommodations. But above all, I could go to school in the place I love the most, and in doing so, build a community in my industry IN that city, which is where I want to end up anyway. I submitted my application on New Year's Eve, along with a killer personal statement (if I do say so myself), and a few days after that, they invited me to audition.

This is where it all goes downhill.

As I sat in the orientation, listening to the two instructors drone on and on, something didn't feel right. When I tell you these people were pretentious, I mean they probably thought their shit tasted like ice cream. I have never in my life encountered someone who took themselves more seriously. It would have been funny if it wasn't so somber. They reminded me so much of the instructors I had in college. They were not at all the kinds of people I wanted to work with.

I will also add I had a very unpleasant interaction with the worse professor of the two. Essentially, I asked a question, and he spoke down to me and basically told me I shouldn't be applying to grad school. His response was condescending, nasty, and frankly, ableist, especially considering he should have known I was autistic if he had actually read my application.

I wish I could say I came up with some witty response on the fly, but I did not. I was so stunned that he would speak that way to someone just asking a question, let alone a prospective student. But in that moment, I realized that, no, this didn't feel right. It wasn't the answer I thought it was.

Then I bombed the audition. I mean I BOMBED. I was too nervous and upset, and I took some bad advice right before my slot (which you should never, ever do). But you know what? I was okay with it. I walked out of that room already knowing I would receive a rejection letter, and I didn't care. Those people disgusted me, and I loathed the idea of being stuck with them for three years.

Still, there was an itch. I knew I was on the right track, even if grad school (or at least, THAT grad school) was not the answer. And as I sat in that room and listened to these two pompous academics jerk each other off for an hour, I realized what it was.

I don't need a "reason" to move to LA. I can just do it.

Yes, it would be harder (much, much harder) to start from scratch out there, as opposed to moving there for a project or to go to school. But so what? I'll hopefully be able to transfer at my job, I'll look for gigs as a PA, and I'll keep going on auditions. Besides, it's not like I don't know ANYONE out there. I have a few contacts, so I'm not actually starting completely from scratch. Still, it will be a challenge to say the least. But I have to try. I have to.

So far, I have only received support, encouragement, and positive feedback from the people in my life. From day one, everyone I know has told me they believe in me, and that belief seems never to have wavered, despite the fact that it's been over 10 years and I still have nothing to show for it. (Well, not nothing, but very, very little.)

When I shared my plans with her, my best friend "Diana" said to me, "Sophie, your miracle is coming. If it was going to happen in New York, it would have happened by now. But I think you're going to find it out there, I really do."

One of my friends of 16 years just yesterday told me, "I have always thought you will make it, and I haven't changed my mind."

And my boyfriend, "Thomas?" He told me under no uncertain terms that he will come with me. "You're the only thing I'm sure about, Sophie." That's a direct quote. I'm so lucky to have someone like him as a partner. He's never even been to LA! We're going in a few months, so hopefully he loves it too.

These are just some of the responses I've gotten. There hasn't been a single person I've shared this choice with who has discouraged me. Not a one. And I just feel like that has to mean something, if so many people believe in me. It's helping me to believe in myself again.

So...I'm moving. Our lease is up at the end of August, so we still have plenty of time. But also, that's really not a lot of time! It's nerve-wracking, but it feels right. Like I said, I have to try. I figure I'll give it three years, and if it doesn't work out, I'll come back to New York with my tail between my legs. But man oh man I hope it doesn't come to that. And honestly, even if my Big Dreams don't come true...I think I'd stay out there. I genuinely just really love Los Angeles. I'm certain that I would want to live there no matter what my career was. There's just something magical about it. (Note: I'm posting this after my weekend trip, and I legit started crying on my way to drop off the rental car, so there you go.)

Of course I'll miss my family and friends terribly. That will be the hardest part, without a doubt. But we'll all find time to visit each other, and talk on the phone as much as possible. Besides, I won't be totally alone. I'll have Thomas by my side, taking the ride with me.

I'm beyond excited for this next chapter in my life. It feels like I'm finally aligning with the path I was meant to take. Whatever happens, at least I can say I took the leap.
