The more I think about it, it really isn’t out of the realm of possibility for Odysseus to say he loves calypso. Victims of abuse can still end up loving their abusers to a degree. Even if it doesn’t always make sense. Because there were likely moments where they were able to talk and bond. When he was going through a bad day with his thoughts and she helped him get out of it. It doesn’t mean that he forgives her for holding him hostage and keeping him from his family. But he only had her in that time when he’s at his lowest point.

I think at times that the fandom can underplay how much just being on the island is a torture in of itself. Even without calypso there. It represents a point where he is left only to his own thoughts. To replaying every single mistake, every selfish decision. Thinking through a million and one what ifs that could have kept them alive. Thinking of the 600 families out there that won’t get to see their men come home. Thinking of everything he did to get home only to be here. Like really think about how much that is running through his head, every second of every day. And the only person who you can talk to, who could take your mind off of those thoughts for even a second. Is your captor

“I’m not sorry for loving you” shows that Odysseus doesn’t truly get the satisfaction of being able to hate her. He likely even pities her or cares for her despite what she’s done

He does see her as a friend because of the circumstances they exist in.

He isn’t going to only remember the bad times. He will remember moments on the beach looking at the stars. Learning about her in those conversations. Maybe even finding her funny or charming. Moments of respite from the well of misery that he’s drowning under every single day.

And that’s the worst part of when you see the person hurting you as a person. And he is a monster, so who is he to judge. He has done horrible things in the pursuit of love, and maybe he can recognize that kinship in her.

Don’t forget about how “Monster” shows Odysseus finally going down that path of realization. Rather than it simply stating” I’ll be as brutal as any of my foes”. It starts with him humanizing them.

Is the cyclops struck with guilt when he kills, is he up in the middle of the night

Or does he end my men to defend his friend and then sleep knowing he has done them right

When the witch turns men to pigs to protect her nymphs is she going insane

Or did she learn to be colder when she got older and now she saves them the pain

We can see that Odysseus is able to give a strange level of empathy and understanding to his enemies while he becomes a monster. And there’s nothing to say he wouldn’t do the same with Calypso.

She is a lonely, isolated woman who has been imprisoned on this island longer than he can comprehend. Someone deeply naive and emotionally stunted from her life on the island. Desperate for love and companionship that he is unable and unwilling to give her.

Is it right? Absolutely the hell not. And as detailed in a previous post, still deeply insidious in the long term.

But this is Odysseus after he had sacrificed 6 men to get home, and then the remaining 36 after. Where he is constantly weighed down by those actions and seeing what becomes of someone who chooses to be a monster. To try and play the gods games and fail terribly.

After Dustin’s comment about Steve not making a big deal about him cooking in their kitchen and at the request of dozens upon dozens of fans in Eddie’s comments, he goes up to check on Steve. Dustin follows behind him with the phone so the stream can see that Steve is fine.

Dustin stays in the doorway while Eddie goes into the living room where Steve is slouched down on the couch, watching New Girl. He sticks his face in Steve’s line of sight and blocks the tv, “Hey, baby! Did you see Dustin? He was cooking in the kitchen.”

Steve, tilting his head so he can see the tv: Barely, he used the microwave.

Eddie: Yeah, but he didn’t use a cover

Dustin: Hey

Eddie: Something wrong, sweetheart? Something happen at work?

Steve: I’m fine

Eddie:

Steve, big sigh: Some people were mean to me today

Eddie: Mean to you? How is that possible? You’re basically - you’re basically *gesturing to the tv* her! You’re Jessica Day! You’re even wearing polka dots.

Steve, the corner of his mouth turning up against his will: That makes you Nick

Eddie: Of course I’m Nick. Look at me!

On Animal Crossing, while searching for my pride flags, I noticed how there's little to none of the lesser talked about pride flags. So I made a compilation of less seen ones!

If you have any suggestions for others I can make, please let me know! Note that I am only doing ones you don't see very often, so unfortunately the standard mlm, wlw, trans, bi, etc aren't options. I'm trying to spread awareness of lesser known identities and give out the representation they don't get from most others.

Also if you're comfortable with it, I'd love to see your characters wearing these!

WAIT WAIT WAIT HOLD THE FUCKING PHONE

So normally we only get fullblown, extended and dedicated flashbacks for heroic characters in One Piece, the characters who we're meant to root for. The literal only TRUE exception we've had to this rule was Big Mom's flashback. Even fucking Doflamingo's flashback was tied to Law and Rosinante's

So the fact that we haven't gotten a single fucking GLIMPSE at Crocodile's backstory is?!?

Like sure, we haven't gotten like a Moria flashback, but you know, he literally told us all we needed to know himself, AND we got to see glimpses of him in the Wano flashbacks. Arlong didn't get a flashback of his own, but he did get to cameo in Fisher Tiger's flashback. And Rob Fucking Lucci got a flashback that was 6 whooping panels long

BUT CROCODILE?? Not only do we know almost Fuck All about his story, but also have never gotten as much as a glimpse at it? But his backstory has been HINTED and TEASED at multiple times??

GUYS. FELLAS

Like. I am SURE the "Full Backstories for Heroes Only" rule is going to get broken again, but with Imu and Blackbeard already there just BEGGING to have their beans spilled, can we even be sure Sir Fucking Crocodile is somehow going to become A Villain So Dangerous To The Narrative that he ALSO should also recieve a Full Fucking Backstory?? For his Nefarious Schemes?? AT THIS POINT??

I think it's more likely Oda's been saving up Croc's backstory because it might just completely recontextualize his entire character

I keep seeing people talking and wondering why the siren told Odysseus the truth about Scylla when she was planning to kill him anyway, but like—it makes sense to me?

Think about it from the siren’s perspective: she’s got this dude she’s trying to lure into the water so she can drown and eat him, he’s being extremely difficult (saying he’s afraid of the water) and resisting her song, he says he’ll get in the water if she just answers a question or two—

So she’s thinking, fine, I’ll answer his questions and then get this over with. It doesn’t matter what the question is, and it’s awfully convenient for her that it’s one she knows the answer to.

She has no reason to lie to him. As far she’s concerned, he’s going to die in a matter of minutes anyways, lying to him would be utterly pointless. Also, it’s a lot harder to come up with a lie on the spot than it is to tell the truth.

PLUS, she doesn’t know who Odysseus is! She doesn’t know that he has reputation for being a lying schemer and master planner!! She, AGAIN, has every reason to believe that he’s going to be dead very soon!

All she has to do is answer his question and he’ll get in the water. Why would she think to lie?

i used to freehand comics all the time as a child and since the part i liked was the drawing part i would just draw panel after panel because i didn't want to stop drawing to think about icky icky words, plus the story TOTALLY still made perfect sense! to me! and noone else, but 'whoooo caaaaares omgggg its not like comics and sequantial art are a communicative meeediummmm lmaoooooo'. i spent my entire childhood telling myself stuff like "oh pfft I know this story by heart- ill SIMPLY remember the dialogue and write it later" ...and. Aurora: *shrugs* Well, you were sleeping so cutely that I- Chloe: *sighs* You crawled into bed next to me, huh? Was that when you knocked on the door in my dream? Aurora: Yeah, and you were such a mopey dopey. *giggles* You were such an emo. Chloe: Well, whatever. That dream made you a bit more assertive, huh?
