The most interesting thing about the Bogeyman curse is how it changes from game to game. We've seen it twice now, in Last Life and Limited Life, but in each game it's so different that it might as well not even be the same mechanic.

In Last Life, the Bogeyman curse is as much a roleplay device as it is a game mechanic. The behavior of players is fundamentally changed by it because the rule states that all loyalties and allegiances are broken until the curse is lifted, and the players actually listen to that. They keep their status secret, they plot against everyone on the server, they kill their own allies without remorse. The curse is seen as a real curse because if you get it, you have to do things you might not want to do and you could ruin your alliances and damage your chances of survival because of it. There is basically no upside except for players who really enjoy chaos.

In Limited Life, the Bogeyman is a whole different beast, so to speak. The rule of forsaken alliances is apparently still in place, but nobody follows it. Hardly anybody even acknowledges it, except to consider and then discard the possibility of scoring an easy kill on an ally. Becoming the Bogeyman has no impact on anyone's allegiances, and teams are very willing to assist their afflicted members in scoring the kill that cures. Not only does this remove the downside of being Bogeyman (as it would be extraordinarily difficult to not get a kill with your allies helping you out), the Bogeyman gets a substantial upside in this game. Being the Bogeyman is a coveted strategic advantage because you get one opportunity to kill an enemy for double damage while securing a double benefit for yourself. The ability to steal two hours from someone's life is massive, as is the chance to gain a full hour with one death. Skizz never truly recovered from his double bogey deaths in Session One, while Tango's back to back Bogey kills put him in a far stronger position than he'd been before. Being chosen as the Bogeyman is not really a curse at all, and you can see the energy surrounding the daily choosing change as the players realize this.

The actual mechanics of the Bogeyman bit changed too, though we're left to infer what they actually are. We know they are different in Limited Life, just not exactly how. We know that Red Names can now become Bogeyman, which was not the case before. We know that the Bogeyman can score legal kills on Red Names, which was not the case before. We have some evidence, though nothing solid, that the Bogeyman mechanic cannot end someone's series. This would be a continuation of the mechanic from Last Life, where the Bogeyman could not be washed out of the series for failing their mission and could not end anyone's series with a Bogey kill. We haven't seen anybody fail in their Bogeyman mission yet, but I'd be very surprised if a Red Bogeyman's failure to score a kill was enough to wash them out of the series. Talk about anticlimactic! And we do have evidence that a Bogeyman kill on a Red player does not wash them out of the series either. (Etho got credit for his bogey kill on Jimmy, but Jimmy's death was treated as a normal death. This was the first Bogey kill on a red name, so it's impossible to tell if a Red player killed by a Bogey only loses one hour or if that is only the case if the Red player has less than two hours left.)

All in all, I really like the Bogeyman mechanic and it's brought a lot to both the games it was in, but I kind of really wish they'd called it something different and explained the rules a little more thoroughly for Limited Life. It's got the same kind of spirit, but it's definitely not the same Bogeyman.

Sharks by Imagine Dragons: The constant fear of the bogeyman and the distrust it sows is so deeply embedded in this season. “Better put your head on swivels, dancing with the very devil[…] He’s coming to get you.”

I Know Places by Taylor Swift: The threat of the bogeyman curse hangs over everyone’s head, making all alliances tentative. “See the vultures circling dark clouds, love’s a fragile little flame it could burn out.” But as the bogeyman frantically whittles at the number of people on green, Scott and especially Pearl become key targets. “They’ll be chasing their tails trying to track us down ‘cause I know places we won’t be found. They are the hunters, we are the foxes, and we run.”

Honest by Tessa Violet: Scott getting hit by the bogeyman curse. “I try and hide from what’s inside you, you can run but you can’t hide[…] Guess I’m not doing well, I’m not doing well.”

Sirens by Imagine Dragons: The curse at work in its bogeyman’s mind, Scott tries to resist it but it persists. “Boy with a heart of gold, get run over by heaven knows what. Weary soldier, I get older, life gets colder. Sometimes I get a little bit scared at night. I get a little preoccupied — the sirens in my mind, the sirens in my mind. I just wanna be good again, I wanna make it to the end. The sirens in my mind […] drowning me out.”

Fallin’ by Cemetery Sun: Scott giving in to the curse and killing Impulse (by pushing him off a ledge, no less). “When war breaks out inside my head something has to give. Something has to give ‘cause I’m fallin’.”

Monster by Imagine Dragons: Scott getting the curse again. “I never said that I want this, this burden came to me and has made its home inside.” Him telling his allies that he’s the bogeyman and deciding to let it take him instead. “If I told you what I was would you turn your back on me? And if I seemed dangerous would you be scared? […] I’m taking a stand to escape what’s inside me: a monster, a monster, I’ve turned into a monster[…] and it keeps getting stronger.”

Tip Toes by half•alive: Scott wrestling with the curse, fighting and resisting it. “Will I always know this divide, living most of this war inside? Take this ghost of me with the tide to die and release my heart to come alive. […] Leaving my heart behind — it’s bleeding — but still my pride is screaming: my future will listen to me, listen to me, listen to me!!”

Bleeding Out by Imagine Dragons: Scott preferring to die to the curse than let it turn him against Pearl. “I’m bleeding out ‘cause the last thing that I’ll do is bring you down. I’ll bleed out for you.”

Ok ok? by half•alive: Scott letting the curse kill him, assuring his friends and allies he’ll be alright. “Far too great a toll it’s played on me, the animal of destiny. I have seen it from afar, seen it’s teeth and felt its claws, felt it ripping me apart to find my place among the stars. It’s ok. (Is it ok?).”

10x Stronger by Dominic Fike: Scott putting on a strong front, fighting wars both internal and external. “I pretend I’m ten times stronger for you.”

You & I by Gentle Bones: Pearl seeing the toll being the bogeyman has taken on Scott. “You make it look so easy when you’re hardly alright. You smile when you don’t need to, but you’re crying at night.” Their reunion when they’re both red. “Who am I to say it’s okay? Let us try to make it through the day. I told you I’m sorry when you were scared, reaching out a hand for you to hold. Lean on my shoulder until it’s all over even though we know you don’t need to.” Splitting up in the final fight, Pearl’s death pushing Scott to fight to win. “It’s okay to say that you don’t have the fight, but if you don’t mind, just leave me to try for you and I. It’s you and I.”

The Archer by Taylor Swift: “I’m ready for combat. I said I don’t want that, but what if I do?” The final fight. Only four, then three, then two left. Scott is a warrior who doesn’t want to fight, but still he thrives. He’s been a target this entire season, he gave up his chance for revenge and greed, he’s been unendingly loyal. “I’ve been the archer. I’ve been the prey. Who could ever leave me, darling? But who could stay?”

Geniuses and Thieves by Gentle Bones: Scott killing Martyn and Ren, securing his victory. “Hold me back, simmer me down, I’m better than before. […] Must all bestowed upon you be deserved. I’ve been at my worst and so I’ll come to you, and oh I’ll find you. And then I cave in a thousand times.”

the vees and alastor serve as nearly perfect parallels to each other re: reputation vs reality. alastor is TERRIFYING. people literally set themselves on fire to avoid him and zestial walking together on the street. charlie is openly wary of him in the pilot, he overthrew the most powerful players sinners had ever known in an unprecedented rise to notoriety that literally made him a bogeyman in hell. and YET. he's only really scary to people who only know of him or by his reputation alone. the people who actually know him personally treat him with 0 fear or reverence: husk backtalks him constantly, niffty crawls all over him, rosie swings him around like a doll, charlie curses at him and vaggie feels comfortable ordering him around the hotel (which he always acquiesces to!!) once he loses that mystique of his reputation, he seems to lose a lot of the gravity of the fear he inspires.

on the other hand, the vees are publicly very friendly and approachable figures, nearly celebrities. people rush to vox, sinners clamor to buy voxtek products and they run all sorts of ridiculous advertisements that make them seem down-to-earth and accessible to average sinners. but in the vees' personal lives, the people who work underneath them and know what they're like behind their reputations are terrified of them. angel cowers from val, vox's assistant quails away from him, velvette's models flinch from her scorn—they're deeply unpleasant behind the curtain, but everybody who doesn't know them trusts and adores them. alastor is a batesian mimic. the vees are a shiny veneer over a pit of rot. they're excellent mirrors

Whenever there was something strange hanging in the air and you could hear the recruits’ exhausted breathing from across the gym, you already knew what was up. It was him again, taking it all out on those poor boys. Or were they the reason he was so pent up?

Ghost was standing tall, his toned legs slightly parted and his arms crossed over the puffing chest. Him shaking his head, when another rookie failed the task, was not a good sign. He was furious, you could tell by now.

Ghost rose up to the rank of some kind of bogeyman to scare the recruiters. Most of the people in the base were afraid to get on his blacklist, they knew he would make their life miserable. 

But you weren’t scared of him, just because you knew the tough, bulky guy had a soft spot for you.

You sneaked into the lieutenant’s office the same afternoon. When he looked up and noticed you, Ghost felt relief that he didn’t have to talk with anybody else right then. You walked up to him with a warm smile on your face. A smile he would die for.

— What’s going on, big boy? — You asked him gently, massaging his tensed shoulders through his fleece jacket. — Wanna talk about it?

— Just paperwork, luv. Lots of it. 

You leaned over his broad shoulder and snuggled against his mask like a kitten. A smile appeared on your face, when he leaned against you back. 

— Do you need help, Si? 

— ’m good, thank you, sweetheart. 

— I can’t wait until we’re back home after this one. We’ll finally watch that movie you told me about. 

He hummed, partially daydreaming about the scenario you were describing while sorting some of the papers. 

— And I will finally show you the new lingerie set I bought, before we left. Crimson red with lace, see-through.

— Fucking hell — Simon cursed, turning his masked face in your direction — you’re tryin’ to distract me or somethin’? 

Ghost corrected himself on the chair he was sitting, but you noticed how he also re-adjusted his trousers. 

— Just putting a nice thought into your head, that’s all. 

You rolled the balaclava over his nose, before peppering his scarred face with kisses – over his lips, curved nose and slightly flushed cheeks. 

— Good luck, big boy. See you tomorrow? 

Ghost moved his jaw as he bit down hard. He was barely holding back. “Fuck”, Simon cursed, when he realised you had put a spell on him. Little minx.

Throughout the entire novel Stocker denies Dracula in every possible sense, deliberately reducing him to some sort of country bogeyman. Dracula brags about his Boyar status, while “his peasants” curse him all they want and even try to prevent him on multiple occasions. His own beasts at hand dare question his command, thus he must resort to threats and violence for wolves’ and vampire sisters’ obedience. He carries himself as an ancient lord of dignified lineage, yet has to see to menial offices himself. He wishes to appear welcoming and charming for Jonathan, instead he proves to be ominous and uncomfortable. He expects to be respected and awed for his power and noble status, instead he’s taken as a child-brained fool. He attacks Mina to revenge his pursuers in most devastating way, yet gets his mental connection with her played against him. He strives to impose dread upon men’s hearts, but he’s chased back to his lair no better than a terror-taken fox.

However, confrontation with humankind is far from being the only thing to paint an unflattering picture of the Count Dracula: he stands out drastically even among his own kin. The other vampires are young and agreeable, he is aged and disturbing. The other vampires are alluring by nature, he is repulsive. The other vampires, if sated, are appealing and rosy-cheeked, he is an appalling leech gorged with blood. The other vampires enjoy their beastly aloof lifestyle, he longs for company. The other vampires receive love and compassion, he is loathed to no end.

The Great and Terrible Count Dracula canonically is a guy who’s lacking in every way. Our man Bram Stocker must’ve hated him so much it feels personal.

well, you made a fighting roster for one of your favorite things, bugs, so why not do your second favorite? HALLOWEEN.....but you don't have to if you want.

I actually did that of my own accord with concept sketches once but it was two years ago so a lot of people haven't seen it.

It started when I made up a Darkstalkers fan character; a "scream queen" (type of horror movie actress in the 50's) and Bug Eyed Monster duo, with some more move ideas:

But then I decided to just make a dozen monster fighter characters of my own like it was its own distinct game and not Darkstalkers:

Mermaid who was partially eaten by people who thought it would make them immortal, instead it killed them because she was poisonous but she doesn't know that so her ghost is stuck on a revenge killing spree that can never be satisfied

Cartoon werewolf in a zoot suit and punk rock vampire with boombox coffin, I didn't come up with storyline for them, I just needed a werewolf and a vampire

Frankenstein's daughter who put her brain into her own monster in order to defend humanity against her dad's creations and other supernatural threats, I decided on this partly because I'm not really into superheroes but they're one of the top most common Halloween costumes so I tried to make a Halloweeny one that I'd like

Nurse who accidentally transfused herself with cursed mummy blood. I made this one because there's a picture I drew when I was real little of a bleeding mummy with the words "MUMMY BLOOD" on it that child-me thought was the scariest picture ever, and also because I love the (mostly Japanese) trope of medical themed mummies. Also based on the fact that "sexy nurses" are a top selling Halloween costume and then that easily ties into a Silent Hill reference. This all felt creepypasta-like so she's also like a slendersman

Old fashioned Halloween mascot pumpkin man with a vegetable ghost gang, actually the ultimate villain of the setting and a monster that eats children

"Bogeyman" fighter inspired by edgy 90's comic books, a ragdoll scarecrow grim reaper clown. She's a manifestation of the fears of children, but in the sense that she exists to destroy whatever threatens them so her main goal is to kill all other monsters and especially the pumpkin guy

Entire zombie outbreak as one fighter, represented by a cute little fungus mascot, but every fighting move is performed by zombies coming and going from the ground

shapeshifting space alien disguised as a generic housewife, the human disguise would animate like a doll being played with by invisible hands

Ideas for extra-weird, secret unlockable fighters:

Photorealistic giant insect

Vincent Price parody and all his moves are obvious special effects performed by a film crew in the background the whole time

Mysterious entity in a "morph suit" because that's become such a staple of Halloween costumes. Changes into all manner of colors and printed textures for different moves or is the token "mimic" character.

Completely normal middle aged office worker who was on his way to work when he was accidentally caught in the monster brawl, battles on the power of pure blind panic. The tournament put his name down as "I'M NOT SUPPOSED TO BE HERE"

I am having Thoughts about the parallels between DL and Limited Life Scott and Martyn.

From the get go of both of these seasons, people were making groups and finding allies all around them, but these two ended up alone.

Scott struggled to find his soulmate in Double Life and got increasingly discouraged as more and more people found their partners around him. Eventually he got tired of waiting and decided to make a bond with someone he chose and someone who chose him: Cleo. When eventually Pearl and Martyn came back to finally meet their soulmates, they had moved on. Their destined partner no longer wanted them, and this drove a wrench between the two. Soon they no longer had each other either, and Martyn was alone.

Starting Limited Life, Scott didn’t have any alliances off the bat, but everyone else did. While he was off preparing, everyone moved on and established alliances, leaving him in the dust. Similar happened to Martyn. They found each other, agreed to be allies, and went back to gathering resources independently as they were before. Only for Martyn to catch the bogeyman curse. He had already been excluded from the server’s established groups, who most people were sticking with at the time, and he only had Scott. If he went back to Scott, he could be consumed by the curse and lose the only tentative friendship he’s managed to make, so he stays away, running in the opposite direction until he’s able to satiate the bloodlust threatening to consume him.

Of course, he can’t tell Scott why. He can’t tell Scott anything, not with the urge to kill pumping through his veins. So Scott knows nothing except for the fact that Martyn said he’d be back and he isn’t. He was abandoned. Again. A near perfect reflection of the first episode of Double Life.

The Fae of the British Lostbelt

This is gonna be a long one, so strap in.

The fae and other creatures of the British Lostbelt take heavy inspiration from real-life legends; almost every major character is named after a type of fairy or mystical creature from British folklore. Many of these names are not English; I've added a pronunciation guide for these in brackets after the word. In this post, I'll go over the beings and concepts these characters are named for and compare the legend to the original. This won't include Morgan or Oberon; those figures are complex enough to deserve posts of their own.

Aesc [ASH]

Aesc is more accurately spelled Æsc. It's an Old English word for the ash tree, and also doubles as the word for the rune for the letter ��. This is pretty much a direct translation into Old English of Aesc's Japanese name, Tonelico (トネリコ), a word meaning "ash tree".

Albion

Albion is a poetic name for the island of Britain, from Greek Albiōn (Ἀλβίων), the name used by classical geographers to describe an island believed to be Britain. The name probably means "white place", which is how it's connected to the Albion of Fate. The Albion of Fate is the White Dragon, a symbol of the Saxons from a Welsh legend. In the most well-known version of the legend, the King of the Britons at the time, Vortigern, was trying to build a castle on top of a hill in Wales to defend against the invading Saxons, but everything he tried to build collapsed. He was told by his court wizard to find a young boy with no father and sacrifice him atop the hill to alleviate the curse. He sent his soldiers out and found a boy being teased for being fatherless, but when he brought the boy to the hill, the boy, a young Merlin, told him that his court wizard was a fool and that the real reason for the collapsing castle was two dragons inside the hill, one red and one white, locked in battle. The red dragon represented the Britons, and the white dragon represented the Saxons. Merlin told Vortigern that nothing could be built on the hill until the red dragon killed the white one. A red dragon is the symbol of Wales to this day, and a white dragon is occasionally used in Welsh poetry to negatively represent England. This white dragon is Albion in Type/Moon lore.

Baobhan Sìth [bah-VAHN shee]

A baobhan sìth is a female fairy in Scottish folklore. The name literally means "fairy woman" in Scottish Gaelic. They appear as a beautiful woman and seduce hunters traveling late at night so that they can kill and eat them, or drink their blood depending on the story. They're unrelated to banshees except in terms of etymology (Banshee is from Old Irish "ben síde", meaning the same thing as baobhan sìth). They're often depicted with deer hooves instead of feet, which is probably what inspired Baobhan Sìth's love of shoes.

Barghest

In the folklore of Northern England, a barghest is a monstrous black dog with fiery eyes teeth and claws the size of a bear's. The name probably derives from "burh-ghest", or "town-ghost". It was often said to appear as an omen of death, and was followed by the sound of rattling chains. The rattling chains probably inspired Barghest's chains. Her fire powers are also obviously based on the fiery eyes of the barghest. Otherwise, she's not very connected to the folkloric barghest, which is never associated with hunger or eating humans.

Boggart

In English folklore, a boggart is either a malevolent household spirit or a malevolent creature inhabiting a field, a marsh, a hill, a forest clearing, etc. The term is related to the terms bugbear and bogeyman, all originally from Middle English bugge, or possibly Welsh bwg [BOOG] or bwca [BOO-cuh], all words for a goblin-like monster. It usually resembled a satyr. It's not really ever depicted with lion features, so it's anyone's guess why Boggart is a lion-man.

Cernunnos [ker-NOON-ahs]

Cernunnos, probably meaning "horned one", was an important pre-Roman Celtic god. His existence is only attested by fragmentary inscriptions and the repeated motif in Celtic religious art of a "horned god", a humanoid figure with deer antlers seated cross-legged. This fragmentary evidence is often led to assume that Cernunnos was a god of nature, wilderness, animals and fertility. There exists no evidence that Cernunnos was a chief deity of any kind, since we have barely any evidence he existed at all in the first place. Cernunnos might not even be his name; it's just the only name we have. Needless to say, the only thing the Cernunnos in the British Lostbelt has in common with the real figure is his large antlers.

Cnoc na Riabh [kuh-nock-nuh-REE-uh]

Cnoc na Riabh, Knocknarea in English, is a hill in Sligo in Ireland. The name means "hill of the stripes", referring to its striking limestone cliffs. It's said to be the location where Medb's tomb lies, so it's connected to Cnoc na Riabh through Fate's conflation of Medb with Queen Mab, a fairy mentioned in Romeo and Juliet; this etymology of Mab as derived from Medb was formerly accepted, but has lost favour with the advent of modern Celtic studies due to the lack of any concrete connection between the two figures.

Grímr (don't know how to say this one, apologies; Germanic myth is not my strong suit)

Odin (Wōden in Old English) was a god worshiped in many places, basically anywhere the Germanic peoples went, including the Anglo-Saxons that became today's English people. As such a widely worshiped god, he had a very large number of names, titles and epithets. Grímr is one such name, literally meaning "mask", referring to Odin's frequent usage of disguises in myths, which is fitting for how Cú disguised himself as a faerie in the British Lostbelt and hid that he possessed Odin's Divinity from Chaldea.

Habetrot

Habetrot is a figure from Northern England and the Scottish Lowlands, depicted as a disfigured elderly woman who sewed for a living and lived underground with other disfigured spinsters. She often spun wedding gowns for brides. Cloth spun by her was said to have curative and apotropaic properties. All the Habetrot of the British Lostbelt has in common with this figure is the association with brides and with spinning cloth. "Totorot" is not a real figure; the name is just an obvious tweak of Habetrot.

Mélusine

Mélusine is a figure that appears in folklore all across Europe. The name probably derives from Latin "melus", meaning "pleasant". She's a female spirit of water with the body of a beautiful woman from the waist up, and the body of a serpent or a fish from the waist down. In most stories, she falls in love with a human man and bears his children, using magic to conceal her inhuman nature. However, she tells her lover he must never look upon her when she is bathing or giving birth. Of course, he invariably does so, and when he does, he discovers her serpentine lower body, and she leaves, taking their children with her. Since Mélusine is just the name Aurora gave her, the Mélusine of the British Lostbelt has very little to do with this figure, but an analogy can be drawn between the Mélusine of folklore hiding her true form as a half-serpent to maintain her relationship with her lover, and Fate's Mélusine suppressing her true form as both a dragon and an undifferentiated mass of cells to ensure Aurora continues to love her.

Muryan [MUR-yan]

A muryan is a rather obscure Cornish fairy. The word is Cornish for "ant". Muryans are diminutive figures with shapechanging abilities, cursed to grow smaller every time they use those abilities until they eventually vanish altogether. Muryan, of course, is connected to muryans through her ability to shrink others.

Spriggan [SPRID-jan]

A spriggan is a type of creature in Cornish folklore. The word is derived from the Cornish word "spyryjyon" [same pronunciation], the plural of "spyrys", meaning "fairy". They're usually grotesque old men with incredible strength and incredibly malicious dispositions, and are often depicted guarding buried treasure. Spriggan is not himself a faerie, and the name is stolen from a faerie he killed, but it's still appropriate due to the greed and selfishness spriggans are usually depicted with.

Woodwose

Woodwose is a Middle English term for the wild man, a motif in European art comparable to the satyr or faun. The etymology is unclear. It has little to do with wolves or animals, despite its association with wildness, but there is at least a thematic connection with Woodwose's character, since the archetype of the wild man depicts a figure who cannot be civilised or well-mannered no matter how hard he tries, much like how Woodwose barely restrains his temper by being a vegetarian and dressing in a fine suit. Woodwose's predecessor, Wryneck, is named for a type of woodpecker with the ability to rotate its neck almost 180°.

1 – Ginny was an excellent Quidditch player, even replacing Harry in the championships during the fifth book. She later made it her profession, playing as a goalscorer for Holyhead Harpies.

2- Gina used jinx to counter the bogeyman with mastery. Such talent led to her being invited to join the slug club.

3- Ginny's and Voldemort's wands share the same wood, made from yew. Yew wands are incredibly rare, good for curses or intended for protective people.

4- She was described as one of the most beautiful and popular girls at Hogwarts. It was stated that, due to her beauty, she enchanted many people, including Slytherins like Blasio Zabini. (no wonder she was the most flirtatious girl in the saga)

5- Ginny who created the name “Dumbledore’s army”

6 – In order of the phoenix, a small fight broke out between Dumbledore's army and the inquisitorial brigade. In which Ginny defeats Draco Malfoy with her spell.

7-JK Rowling believes she brought Harry and Ginny together for a reason. She describes Ginny as 'tough, not in a nasty way, but brave'. She goes on to say that Harry "needs to be with someone who can handle the demands of being with Harry Potter, because he's a scary boyfriend in a lot of ways."

Darkstalker, who wanted desperately to be the savior: seen as the devil, the demon in the dark, the bogeyman.

Clearsight, who wanted nothing more than a normal life: seen as a goddess, worshiped and revered for something that sometimes seemed more a curse than a blessing.
