Reminder from someone with actual literal brain damage from a brain injury to stop fucking using "brain damage" and "brain injuries" as a means of describing someone whose opinions you don't like or deem as stupid.
It's ableist and offensive as fuck, and for some reason a lot of leftist people think it's okay to use. I've seen posts replying to right wing racists calling them "brain damaged if you believe this" and "do you have a brain injury? do you not understand X?". Just now I saw a beautiful post about fat people throughout history that was absolutely ruined by opening with "How do we break it to boomers with actual brain damage and nostalgic brainrot..." before continuing to say that fat people existed throughout history.
Brain damage does not make you racist. A brain injury doesn't make you ignorant, or fatphobic, or unaware of history and politics. Stop fucking using my disability as a catch all to describe people you think are shitty. Y'all use it like it's a replacement for how people used to use the R-slur, which shows you learned absolutely nothing about why the R-slur was wrong to use and decided to throw in other disabilities instead. Fuck off and stop doing it.
(And don't do it with other disabilities either, because I know y'all do.)
I know a lot of people with brain injuries. They're smart, and funny, and compassionate. They learn about the world and care about social issues and wish they could go to protests if their disability won't allow them to. Are there right wing people with brain injuries? Sure, absolutely. But they are not right wing because they have a brain injury, and using any disability as an insult is still fucking ableist.
Tldr - stop using brain damage and brain injury as an insult. It's ableist and incredibly offensive.
Love, your local brain injured/brain damaged pal

thinking about how Humans Are Space Orcs stories always talk about how indestructible humans are, our endurance, our ability to withstand common poisons, etc. and thats all well and good, its really fun to read, but it gets repetitive after a while because we aren't all like that.
And that got me thinking about why this trope is so common in the first place, and the conclusion I came to is actually kind of obvious if you think about it. Not everyone is allowed to go into space. This is true now, with the number of physical restrictions placed on astronauts (including height limits), but I imagine it's just as strict in some imaginary future where humans are first coming into contact with alien species. Because in that case there will definitely be military personnel alongside any possible diplomatic parties.
And I imagine that all interactions aliens have ever had up until this point have been with trained personnel. Even basic military troops conform to this standard, to some degree. So aliens meet us and they're shocked and horrified to discover that we have no obvious weaknesses, we're all either crazy smart or crazy strong (still always a little crazy, academia and war will do that to you), and not only that but we like, literally all the same height so there's no way to tell any of us apart.
And Humans Are Death Worlders stories spread throughout the galaxy. Years or decades or centuries of interspecies suspicion and hostilities preventing any alien from setting foot/claw/limb/appendage/etc. on Earth until slowly more beings are allowed to come through. And not just diplomats who keep to government buildings, but tourists. Exchange students. Temporary visitors granted permission to go wherever they please, so they go out in search of 'real terran culture' and what do they find?
Humans with innate heart defects that prevent them from drinking caffeine. Humans with chronic pain and chronic fatigue who lack the boundless endurance humans are supposedly famous for. Humans too tall or too short or too fat to be allowed into space. Humans who are so scared of the world they need to take pills just to function. Humans with IBS who can't stand spicy foods, capsaicin really is poison to them. Lactose intolerance and celiac disease, my god all the autoimmune disorders out there, humans who struggle to function because their own bodies fight them. Humans who bruise easily and take too long to heal. Humans who sustained one too many concussions and now struggle to talk and read and write. Humans who've had strokes. Humans who were born unable to talk or hear or speak, and humans who through some accident lost that ability later.
Aliens visit Earth, and do you know what they find? Humanity, in all its wholeness.

i am once again reminding people that brain injuries/damage aren't just tbis and strokes. it's good to acknowledge tbis and such but when talking about brain damage and injuries please do not reduce them to just those two forms of brain damage and injuries. people with/who had encephalitis & autoimmune encephalitis and meningitis survivors and other infections and other survivors and havers of diseases, disorders and illnesses that cause/resulted in brain injury/damage, and other forms of it that people don't really talk about much. please talk about us too when you're talking about brain damage

imagine how smart Bruce would be if he didn't get hit in the head all the time. "Lex Luthor is the smartest man on Earth--" "Tony Stark is--" right but if Bruce is holding his own up there AND he's been playing fast and loose with TBIs for a few years, that ranking is flawed.

Good morning I’m thinking about the von Karmas and gunshot wounds. Contrary to popular belief, in most cases you don’t really want to take out a bullet unless you absolutely have to, since digging around in there causes more soft tissue damage and opens more possibilities for infection. One of the few places that bullets are almost always taken out, ironically, is the shoulder. Shoulders have a lot of important junk in them, and over time, the bullet crushes, tears, and destroys what’s around it, leading to nerve damage, loss of function in the arm, chronic pain, etc etc. It's kinda like shoving a rock in a really delicate machine and leaving it rattling around in there. Even if the wound itself was minor, the act of leaving the bullet in just steadily makes things worse If a bullet is removed from a non-complex gunshot wound to the shoulder, it’s not uncommon to get all your function back with minimal pain within months. If you don’t, the bullet just quite literally tears you up inside for the rest of your life And ain’t That a fun metaphor

DPxDC Prompt:
The next blow sent the human tumbling into the wall. It wheezed and spat up a gob of blood, pulling itself up on trembling arms and legs.
Pathetic.
“So this is the mortal who captured our young king’s attention. The so-called warrior who he trusted with the sacred duty of guarding his core.”
A shadowed hand pinned it to the wall and it uselessly pawed at the blade-like claws pressed against its fragile throat.
“How a weakling like you seduced High King Phantom, I’ll never know.”
The human squeezed its eyes shut. I’m sorry Danny, it mouthed with cracked and bleeding lips.
The impudence.
Slammed into the ruined bricks once more, the human let out a breathless cry.
“You dare address him like that. You dare to call upon his living name!” Dagger sharp teeth dripped shadowy ectoplasm inches from the mortal’s flesh.
“I’m doing him a favor, disposing of you.”
There was silence.
Then.
The human looked up with glowing green eyes.
A wave of unearthly force erupted from its body.
A dual layered voice echoed out from its miserable throat.
“Oh you just made a BIG mistake.”

getting a lot of shit for a comment i made that my very disabled husband enjoys gardening. "well if he can garden he can work! lazy fucking leech!"
he can garden because i've put the work in to make it possible for him to garden. there is a chair that lives by the raspberry patch so he can sit down while he picks berries. i've single handedly dug ditches and leveled ground to build raised beds that he can sit on when he weeds. i'm not a huge fan of the beds i've built now that i've fenced it all in (thankfully i've only built four) so i'm switching them out for livestock tanks. those tanks i'm going to place so his walker will fit through them to plan for his body further deteriorating as he ages.
it takes him hours to do tasks that i take for granted. when i'm tilling up the in-ground beds he goes behind me on his hands and knees-VERY slowly-taking out clumps of grass and weeds (because he can't bend over.) he waters my rose garden every morning. after that he has to sit for two hours to recuperate.
he helps me harvest-by sitting on the raised beds. i built them out of cinder blocks so he has space to sit. moving to livestock tanks, he'll be able to sit on his walker to harvest.
when he helps me process our harvests to be canned or frozen, he sits on a bar stool for as long as he can. eventually his back cramps up and he has to go lay down. and his "help" is primarily putting things in bags and drying off blanched vegetables because the nerve damage in his hands he can't uniformly cut things or funnel stuff into the canning jars.
disabled people CAN and DO have labor intensive hobbies BECAUSE people have taken the time to make it possible for them to do. i saw a comment that disabled folks that claim to like to hike are "lying leeches." we're about to go to mammoth cave-with his walker-and walk the trails that are specifically built for wheelchair users. when we get home he'll probably sleep for three days.
but sure. because i took the time to completely build an area for him to engage in a meaningful hobby, he can totally go out into a world that will absolutely refuse to accommodate his mobility issues, his nerve damage that ruined his fine motor skills, his traumatic brain injury that prevents him from being able to function in the general public. disabled people deserve whole lives. WHOLE LIVES. including the shit you think they don't deserve to do.

The shy, fearful whumpee having enough of the Whumper and biting them. Not just a fearful nip either, they grab on and won’t let go. They give the whumper nerve damage, yet they won’t stop. They have to be pulled off the whumper like some kind of rabid animal.
And there’s no telling what the whumper does with animals that don’t behave.

A whumpee that's so used to pain they don't realize they're hurt.
They've been so accustomed to the constant wounds and torture that they gradually grew numb to it. Or maybe to them, pain is a constant state of being, there's nothing unusual about it. And so, there's not much of a difference wether it hurts a bit more or a bit less.
Perhaps, when they've been rescued and getting accustomed to ordinary life, they might get hurt. But, since it's just a dull ache, it's fine, right? After it doesn't get better for a while, they might mention it to someone and receive the advice to visit a doctor - only to find out that the injury is major and that a person normally wouldn't be able to function at all, much less brush it off as a "minor inconvenience".
That would probably make their companions wonder about what they could have gone through to become like this. Perhaps they knew it wasn't good, but never to this extent. :D
