Arkham!Verse! Two Face x Psychiatrist!Reader WIP

ohohoho what's this? Why, it’s a sneak peek at the current long fic I am working on! I know exactly how I want the end, so I’ve gotten that done and I have maybe all of chapter one done.

CW: This specific WIP has very brief allusions to DID, and unstable mental health. No smut for this WIP but as always MDNI.

Summary:

The events that had transpired with Joker and Batman in Arkham Asylum six months ago had left the city in a state of uncertainty as to what was to come next for Gotham’s criminally insane. Black Gate didn’t have the capacity to keep all of the inmates they had, and keep acquiring new ones. Gothamites knew one thing for certain though, Arkham Asylum was no more. 

That was until ex-warden Sharp announced, and won, his Mayoral campaign. He approved Doctor Strange’s proposition to build a new facility, right in the heart of Gotham. Doctor Hugo Strange recruited you and a few others to become psychiatrists at his newly instated facility Arkham City. He vowed it would be unlike any other mental health program that Gotham City has ever seen. Promising a high reform rate. He made a promising pitch, and you happily agreed to sign on. 

A fractured psyche after a traumatic event isn’t uncommon. In fact, you’d seen your fair share of shattered minds during your short time at Arkham Asylum. Though, your newest patient was a bit… Different. It seemed his psyche was split exactly down the middle. Two separate, sentient halves constantly battling for dominance. Two completely separate entities occupying one body. 

 His previous psychiatrist gave up on him and transferred out of Arkham to work at Blackgate. The pages upon pages of notes claimed the Doctor couldn’t get anywhere with Harvey or Two Face. Stating that without his coin, it was impossible to talk to him as Warden Sharp didn’t allow the patients to have any personal paraphernalia, especially patients like Dent. Now with Sharp out of the picture, and Arkham Asylum gone, you had a small sliver of hope that you’d be able to make some semblance of progress with Harvey. 

Even more hope floods through you as you realize you’d be his first psychiatrist since Arkham City opened and he had been admitted. A fresh slate, for both of you. Maybe you yourself were suffering illusions of grandeur, as no psychiatrist had been able to successfully rehabilitate their patients at Arkham Asylum. Christ, look at Harley Quinn for example.

Some doctor she turned out to be.

But this was not Arkham Asylum and you were not Harley Quinn.

 You sighed, tossing the thick file of Harvey Dent onto your mahogany desk. You leaned back in your leather office chair, causing it to creak under the sudden pressure. Your arms crossed as you stared at the intake sheet, Harvey's mugshot staring back. On one side, you saw a broken man. Gotham’s very own golden boy District Attorney, now only a shadow of his former self. On the other side you saw the very being he swore to rid the city of. But you know what they say, you either die a hero…

Alas, you couldn’t blame him entirely. Suffering such a horrific attack would have destroyed anyone. In fact, you admired his resilience. In a sense. Somewhere, deep down inside him, you know there’s the same Harvey Dent that Gotham once knew. You’re determined to bring him back out.

Five fun facts from a dimension hopping au I'd write:

Your choice of comics verse Jason and Tim who don't get along, enemies to coworkers style. But ala The Long Way Home (excellent fic btw everyone who cares about Jason and Tim's relationship whether romantic or platonic please go read it) they get warped together to Arkhamverse and don't realize it. At first.

Separately, they meet their arkhamverse counterparts. Jason nearly get blown up by Arkham Knight Jason, Tim has no idea what to make of his double being married? To? Babs? They meet back up and go 'you thought YOUR double was weird'

'you thought your double was weird, wait til you get a load of fucking BRUCE.' 'Is the batmobile? A tank??' Jason gets very sus of the 'suppressive rounds' Arkham Bruce fires at the mercenaries. Tim gets very sus of the whole ass people he's got stashed away at the batcave lmao

Arkham Bruce is running on such severely fucked up fumes that it makes them actively miss their own Bruce back home. They help him with rounding up Riddler and Scarecrow and with handling the thorny Arkham Knight problem, but absolutely are going to get betrayed 'for their own good' (or because Bruce doesn't trust them) eventually. So they find themselves leaning more and more on each other as the only familiar and trustworthy face in this fucked up dark clown maze version of Gotham

Things end better because of their influence than in the game (something something cure for jokerism something something Arkham Knight Jason gets catharsis/reconciliation and a shock blanket and some soup) and they get themselves home ASAP and everything 100% goes back to normal and they definitely will not be talking about how Tim totally kissed Jason when they thought they were going to die at the end there, nuh uh, no way, Tim has very important debriefings to write byyyye--

(Bonus fun fact: Bruce is very confused but ultimately accepts the out-of-the-blue check ins/hugs he receives from Tim and Jason with aplomb. He reads Tim's report and goes 'Ah. Yes, dimension hopping will do that to a motherfucker'. He can't follow-up with either of them though, for some reason they've both gone dark for a week. Together. At the same safehouse. Hm. Better to leave that one alone, he thinks.)

George found that photo of Gwen and Miles in Gwen's room after she left, (there was no way that he didn't at least once went through her stuff and he found it) and he didn't know the context but he also couldn't know why she's hiding it, he didn't know who that guy was or why she didn't talk about him, when he's clearly important to her, and on top of that it's more than obvious that she was in her suit when they took that photo and she's unmasked. Imagine all questions that went through George's head when he saw it. Imagine him realizing that Gwen is making friends again, that she's moving on, and that the only thing that keeps her in the past is George because he didn't move on.

And imagine him seeing Miles in person for the first time and deciding to embarrass the crap out of his daughter by pointing at him and saying "so that's the guy from that photo you were hiding!"
