Gifts (Oneshot)

Another oneshot. This time featuring Wade. Plus we learn a bit more about how Mobians perceive their animal side.
- - -
"Can I ask you something Tails?", asked Wade
Tails was hanging out in the police station, having been asked to try and fix the computer after it had gone on the blink for the umpteenth time that week. Tails had happily obliged, and hadn't taken long in his task (while also adding his own extra features he hoped would be appreciated). Now the two were sitting in Wade's office, a plate of biscuits, sweets, and tea in front of them. Tom was due to return soon with Knuckles from the library, and Sonic was shopping with Maddie.
"Uhh...Yeah go ahead", said Tails, picking out a mint sweet.
"You know how you guys are well...animals?", Wade continued. He gestured to Tails, indicating that by 'you guys' he meant the fox as well as his brothers.
"Yeah?", Tails raised an eyebrow.
"Well", Wade sat back in his chair. "What do you do about your...instincts. I know you guys have them. Aren't they like an inconvenience?"
Tails' eyes widened, more taken aback by the question than offended.
"Sorry", Wade stuttered, falling back into his chair, his face red. "Forget I said anything"
"No no, it's ok!", said Tails. "I just want to know what you mean by what kind of instincts. You're going to have to be more specific"
"Well you know...”, Wade gestured again. “Like how you guys do certain things that our animals do. Sonic curls into a ball when he gets startled. Knuckles feels the need to dig in the back garden. And you also have those claws”
Wade then made a very enthusiastic clawing motion against his face, mimicking a wild animal tearing into it.
“How do you cope with that?”
Tails could only stare. He wasn’t sure what to say. On the one hand, Wade was making a point. But on the other, he was clearly demonstrating how little he understood. And Tails was happy to make him.
“I think you’re looking too much into it”, Tails laughed. “Our instincts are no different than you humans”
“Don’t think so”, said Wade. "I don't dig up my garden on random intervals, or crash into my door if I hear a noise"
Tails gulped. Yesterday he had been startled by the postman dropping mail through the letterbox, although he didn't know it was that at first. Instincts kicking in prompted him to go racing down the stairs on all fours, tripping on the last step, and smacking right into the front door. Sonic had nearly passed out from laughing, and Tails had silently vowed revenge.
"Well there can be setbacks", said Tails, shaking himself out of the memory. "But you humans have instincts, even if you don't always know it"
Tails took a sip of tea, as Wade sat back and watched curiously.
"Human instincts trigger under emotions. Like when you get mad, sad, or even like when you know what to do when someone is in trouble"
The fox continued.
"Sonic curls into a ball because his instincts tell him that his quills will protect him. Knuckles digs because he has the urge to find treasures to gift, aannnd he says that it creates good fertilisation for the soil! Our instincts protect us and each other. Whether human or animal. It's a part of us. The same applies with our claws"
Tails pulled one of his gloves off and lifted his hand to inspect it. His tone now musing, thoughtful.
"Without these, we wouldn't have another way to defend ourselves, or even be able to play, or groom our fur. Our instincts are never an inconvenience. They are gifts from our ancestors"
He looked up at Wade and smiled. Wade just sat in silence, mulling over the kit's words.
"Well", he eventually said. "That's one way of looking at it"
Suddenly a voice cut through the subdued moment, and Tom appeared in the door with Knuckles in tow.
"Hey ya!", Tom waved cheerfully. "How you doing, buddy? Did you have fun with Wade today?"
"Sure did!", Tails cheerfully replied.
He flew off the chair to join Tom and Knuckles.
"Wade, you ok to hold the fort for a bit longer?", asked Tom. "I'll be back in a moment. Just gotta drop these two home. Maddie just texted. She and Sonic will be back soon"
"Leave it to me!", Wade saluted. "That little fox has interesting words of wisdom"
"I also need to show you the sacred tomes I got from the lie-bary, Fox", said Knuckles, as he excitedly held up a pile of books.
The three of them said goodbye to Wade, but just as they exited the room, Tails popped his head back in.
"Oh Wade! I hope you don't mind, but I also added an extra upgrade to the coffee machine. Hope you like it!"
Wade's face fell as Tails disappeared again.
Luckily the three of them were already outside, so they didn't hear the loud bang, followed by the geyser of water.

That bit about Knuckles fertilising the soil is actually true for echidnas! (source)

Things I've seen tumblr memeing about James Somerton doing à la "How did no one see how bigoted he was!" as if those things haven't been a significant part of tumblr culture for over a decade :
Presenting untrue and bordering on conspiratorial versions of (queer or otherwise marginalised) history without any sources
Completely disregarding and disrespecting any expertise on socio-cultural topics/humanities and distrusting academics and historians (incl. acting as if no academics or historians could be queer or marginalised)
Downplaying the role misogyny played in the historical oppression of queer women and concluding that queer men must have been more oppressed than queer women
Bi women are, at best, not as queer as "real" queer ppl, and at worst, simply equivalent to straight women
Despite nominal trans inclusivity, transmasculine ppl are functionally women when convenient (combined with the above, bi transmascs are functionally straight women)
Despite nominal trans inclusivity (bis), shamelessly attacking, threatening and actively endangering any trans woman who questions them or smth they find important (often by unfairly presenting her as violent or as a threat)
Having absolutely fucking wild and reductive takes about ace ppl, the oppression they face and their place in the queer community
Stating that marriage equality is an assimilationist fight while completely ignoring its direct roots in the horrifying consequences of the AIDS crisis for partners of ppl who died of AIDS
Praising western media creators from the past for queer coding even under censure and in the same breath condemning current non western media creators for being homophobic bc their representation isn't explicit enough
Blaming China for all existing homophobic censoring in western media
Assuming all queer media would be better told by western creators and by western standards
Only out queer ppl get to tell queer stories
Heavily criticising almost all queer media created by women or ppl they see as such (see above points about trans ppl) or involving/starring a significant amount of women for any perceived or real amount of "problematicness", but fawning over and praising and negating criticism of queer media created by and starring mostly or even functionally exclusively men (even when it could be argued that, you know, not involving/seriously sidelining women is a pretty clear example of misogyny which should probably be considered "problematic")
And I'm probably forgetting stuff or there's stuff I have internalised myself and don't recognise as an issue
Like idk but I feel like the takeaway from Hbomberguy and Toddintheshadow's videos should maybe be "be aware of such patterns in your communities bc they definitely exist" and not "this guy is uniquely awful" and I feel like a lot of the discussion I've seen surrounding this has been severely failing at that. Most ppl who've spent any significant amount of time on tumblr prob either have internalised at least one of those thought patterns, have had to de-internalise them, or have had to be extremely vigilant to not internalise them (which is done by, you know, seeking out other sources, which also seemed like an important takeaway from the videos)

you have to go to work so you can pay for your doctor, who is not taking your insurance right now, and if you say i can't afford the doctor's you are told - get a better job. it is very sad that you are unwell, yes, but maybe you should have thought about that before not having a better job.
(where is the better job? who is giving out these better jobs? you are sick, you are hurting - how the hell are you supposed to be well enough for this better job?)
but you go to the doctor because you had the nerve to be hurt or sick or whatever else. and they tell you that it is because you have anxiety. you try your best. you are a self-advocate. you've done the reading (which sometimes pisses them off worse, honestly). you say it is actually adding to my anxiety, it is effecting my quality of life. so they say that you are fat. they say that all young people have this happen to them, isn't it a medical marvel! they say that you should eat more vegetables. they say that you probably just need to lose a little more weight, and that you are faking it for attention.
(what attention could this doctor possibly give? what validation? that's their fucking job, isn't it?)
there is always a hypochondriac, right. someone always tells you about a hypochondriac. or someone who is unnecessarily aggressive during the worst days of their life. or someone looking "for a quick fix". or some idiot who wasn't educated about how to properly care for themselves who just abandons their treatment. and again, the hypochondriac, the overly-cautious hysteric. these people don't deserve to be treated like humans (right), and since you might be one of these people, you also don't get treated like a human. because those people can really fuck with the system, you now have to pay for it. and besides. you're actually probably faking it.
(more often than not, you find a 2:1 ratio of these stories. for every "hypochondriac", there are 2 people who knew something was wrong, and yet nobody could fucking find it. the story often ends with pointless suffering. the story often ends with and now it's too late, and it's going to kill me.)
you are actually just making excuses. someone else got that procedure or that diagnosis and he's fine, you should be fine too. someone else said they watched a documentary about other inspirational people with your exact same condition, maybe you should be inspirational, too. you're just too morbid. your pain and your experience is probably just not statistically concerning. it is all self-reported anyway, and you're just being a baby.
(once, while sitting down in the middle of making coffee, you had the sudden, horrible thought - i could kill myself to make the pain stop. you had to call your best friend after that. had to pet your dog. had to cry about it in the shower. you won't, but that moment - god, fuck. the pain just goes on and on.)
you know someone who went in for routine surgery and said i still feel everything. they told her to just relax. it took her kicking and screaming before they figured out she wasn't lying - the anesthetic drip hadn't been working. you know someone who went in for severe migraines who was told drink water and lose weight. you know someone who was actively bleeding out and throwing up in the ER and was told you're just having a bad period.
in the ER there are always these little posters saying things like "don't wait! get checked today!" and you think about how often you do wait. how often the days spool out. you once waited a full week before seeing the doctor for what you thought was a sprained wrist. it had actually been broken - they had to rebreak it to set it.
but you go into the doctor. the problem you're having is immediate. the person behind the counter frowns and says we're not taking your insurance. you will be paying for this out-of-pocket.
they send you home with tylenol and a little health packet about weight loss or anxiety or attention deficit. on the front it has your birthday and diagnosis. you think about crying, and the words swim. it might as well say go fuck yourself. it might as well say you're a fucking idiot. it might as well say light your money on fire and lie down in it. and the entire fucking time - the problem persists.
it's okay. it's okay, it's just another thing, you think. it's just another thing i have to learn to live with.

actually I'm kind of curious about this because it was a huge debate among my peers in my community
Clarifications under the cut:
The poster is in a public space where it is typical for everyday people to post things. It is not someone's private property or possession. Think piece of paper taped to a telephone pole, not sign in a storefront or in someone's yard.
The poster is not protected by law; you are very unlikely to face legal consequences for vandalizing it. Caveat: some peers have argued that it risks being socially consequential because an organization or demographic that you are a part of may be judged as intolerant/oppressive/disruptive/otherwise unpleasant if people witness your actions, and thus advocated against vandalism for fear of damaging your public image.
The poster is not an expensive or personal piece of artwork; it is a mass produced print on letter paper.
You are vehemently opposed to the message displayed on the poster, but it is an opinion that people are free to have in your country.
The 4th option refers to things like intentionally putting your own poster over top of the bad poster or otherwise making the bad poster harder to view; some people argued that targeting the poster for removal is out of line, but posting your own messages is an innocent action that you are well within your right to do (in this context, posters regularly eclipse each other as new ones are posted over top of outdated ones due to limited space)
The poster is part of a campaign; it's not unique. There are many postings of it across the community.
This is all assuming that the offending poster is not old and would typically not be considered fair game for pruning for quite some time, and that it is being specifically targeted for removal because of its message (rather than petty vandalism or because it's obstructive or damaged). E.g., if a poster is advertising an event happening on April 20th, it's typical to prune it after that date but not before.
Of course the situation that prompted the real life debate did involve a specific offending message, but I'm not going to specify what it was for now because I think it'll skew the results as people will just end up voting based on whether they like or dislike that message, which isn't the point of this. For this poll we are assuming that it IS a message that you are very opposed to; you can substitute in your own opinion that you have strong feelings about.
Please reblog for sample size!
