Charisma House - Superhuman Sharehouse Story “Charisma” - #81 Yes or No
Tumblr media
Please read alongside listening to the drama track on Youtube.
TL notes:
At some point the word ケツカッチン is said. This is a word used in the Japanese entertainment industry when a production’s schedule has a fixed time and it cannot be changed, or that you still have matters to take care of besides what you’re doing at the moment. It’s a term that combines “butt” and “clapperboard” since you hear the sound of the clapper behind you. There is no true English counterpart to this, so it has been localized to an innuendo of some kind about the never-ending, huge workload.
Let me know if I missed something!
Ohse: (These people who call themselves acquaintances of Sarukawa-san were very kind to a piece of shit like me.)
Buddy 1: What’cha hiding under that plastic bag for, huh
Buddies: Hahaha
Ohse: …
Buddy 1: You goin’ somewhere?
Amahiko: Yes, for a little stroll.
Rikai: Allow me to join, Amahiko-san
Buddy 1: Wait!
Amahiko & Rikai: !?
Buddy 1: This town’s riddled with misfits. Don’t even dare to think the rules of your world apply here
Amahiko & Rikai: ....!
-
Buddy 1: “Keep your eyes peeled. You never know who’s lurking in the shadows…”
(Sound of rubble falling)
Rikai: !? Who’s there!
Amahiko: We know you’re hiding, show yourself.
Asia: I’m the Charisma of Asia.
Amahiko & Rikai: ?
Asia: The Charisma of Asia.
Amahiko: Excuse me?
Rikai: Who may that be?
Asia: Charisma of Asia.
Amahiko: Asia…
Asia: That’s right, Asia. Charisma of Asia.
Asia: The Charisma of Asia is your progenitor, a legendary Charisma.
Rikai: Legendary Charisma?
Amahiko: What are you talking ab-
Asia: Quiet, I’m the one speaking. The Charisma of Asia doesn’t have time to waste.
Asia: Why may that be?
Amahiko: ….
Asia: Because I’m the Charisma of Asia.
Asia: Good grief, another day of edging a big load.
Asia: Ah, there might be people who have taken that the wrong way.
Asia: It was inappropriate, my apologies.
Asia: You might think this is unexpected, however the Charisma of Asia is a naive worrywart.
Asia: In other words, the fact that even a legendary class like me is always plagued by anxiety and impatience is something I want you all to know.
Asia: Don’t worry. One day I will break through it.
Asia: Sincerity has the last word.
Rikai: O, kay…
Asia: I’m certain our paths will cross again someday.
Amahiko: Really!?
Asia: By then I will have become one large clump of Charisma.
Asia: I promise.
Amahiko: A-alright…
Asia: Very well. Charisma Link, complete.
(Mysterious sparkling sound)
Rikai: Charisma Link?
Asia: Now the Charisma of Asia must fly away.
Asia: Why is that?
Amahiko: Because you’re the Charisma of Asia?
Asia: You know it, farewell.
(Sound of wire shooting out)
Asia: Hup! Hup! Hup!
Asia: Asia!
Rikai: That’s quite the means of transportation…
Ohse: (There really are all kinds of crazies running around here…)
Ohse: (Ahem.)
Ohse: (I mean, full of unique individuals.)
Ohse:  (But we could spend our time in safety due to the protection a group of people offered us.)
Iori: The Charisma of Asia?
Terra: The heck’s that
Fumiya: Some freak I bet
Ohse: A progenitor?
Amahiko: Yes, like some kind of superior.
Ohse: (On the other hand, Sarukawa-san was little by little distancing himself from us.)
Ohse: (Maybe it’s because it brought him back to old times, how it was nice to be here again.)
Ohse: (He started to look different too.)
Ohse: (And then…)
Ohse: (In the end…)
Sarukawa: Where’s Ryuu
Buddy 2: No worries, my man. We ain’t letting him do anything dangerous
Buddy 2: We’re just looking out for him for the time being
Sarukawa: …M’bad
Buddy 1: Have to say, he’s the spitting image of Kei
Woman: Like a lil’ brother
Buddies: Hahaha
Sarukawa: …Nah, y’know that ain’t true.
Leader: Kei.
Sarukawa: Huh?
Leader: Come back.
Sarukawa: …
Leader: Things are getting worse by the second here. We need your strength.
Leader: Weaklings like us only got one way of fighting, through “connection”
Leader: Can’t stay alive without it.
Leader: And don’t tell me you forgot where you belong.
Leader: Return to us.
Buddy 1: Kei.
Buddy 2: Kei!
Sarukawa: …
Woman: Why!? What’s not to your liking!? Kei!
Sarukawa: …! ….!
Iori: “He said he didn’t know.”
Terra: “…Eh?”
Iori: Because this was supposed to be a place where he felt at home.
Iori: The kind of atmosphere Saru-chan loves.
Iori: Free to do whatever he wants, not bound by any annoying rules.
Iori: He had the biggest smiles on his face back then.
Terra: …But, there was no choice but for him to leave, right…
Iori: Yeah, Saru-chan said so.
Sarukawa: “It'd be damn easier if I did have a reason.”
Sarukawa: “Y’see, Io.”
Sarukawa: “I’m the kinda bastard who can’t stand always bein’ tied to anyone for as long as he lives…”
Sarukawa: …Ryuu?
Ryuu: I’m staying here in this town.
Sarukawa: …?
Ryuu: That’s why you have to come back, Kei-oniichan.
Ryuu: Let’s live together again, okay!? Like we used to!
Sarukawa: …!
Leader: Kei.
Woman: Kei!
Sarukawa: …!
Fumiya: Hold it.
Buddies: !?
Sarukawa: …Fumiya?
Fumiya: That’s too good to be true.
Fumiya: Ryuu, you’ve been lying, haven’t you.
Ryuu: !
Leader: Hey.
Sarukawa: What.. are you…
Fumiya: You came in contact with Kei under the guise of a coincidence.
Fumiya: Then you got close to us, casually snooping for the reason why we’re hiding.
Fumiya: Followed by luring us to a designated location for an ambush by your pals.
Fumiya: Making us feel grateful for saving us, and then persuading him to stay in this town.
Fumiya: You all got connections down under, don’tcha
Fumiya: Said it yourself. Weaklings fight with their ties.
Woman: …!
Fumiya: Ryuu, it wasn’t like you just happened to be here.
Fumiya: You already settled down.
Fumiya: You ignored Kei’s warnings, with the decisive blow being the skateboard you couldn’t hold onto anymore.
Sarukawa: …!
Sarukawa: Ryuu…?
Ryuu: I’m-!
(Sound of Ryuu being covered with a bag)
Sarukawa: Ryuu!!
Fumiya: !
(A knife being pulled out)
Buddy 1: Hold it, one step and he’ll get it.
Fumiya: Go ahead
Buddy 1: !?
Sarukawa: CUT IT OUT! What are you fuckers doing!!
Leader: Kei, we’re serious about this.
Leader: You betrayed us once already. And it won’t happen again.
Leader: You’re being chased by some unruly fellas, no? I know all about it.
Leader: It all depends on your answer… got it?
Sarukawa: …!!
Leader: Come back to us.
Woman: Please, say yes! Kei!
Sarukawa: ….!!!!
Sarukawa: ……..!!!
(Sound of radar)
Torahima: Yes! Yes, finally found them!
Torahime: Just you wait, Sensei!
(Cheering voices)
Torahime: ….Eh?
Asia: I am the Charisma of Asia.
Asia: The Charisma of Asia doesn’t have time to waste, goodbye.
(Sound of wire shooting)
Asia: Five years in a row!
Asia: Inducted into the hall of fame!
Asia: Haaaah!!!
Torahime: WHO ARE YOUUUUUUUU

“i can see him reacting two ways to this: he either begins to jealously cling to her and make his attentions more visibly obvious, steal her focus, keep her eyes on him OR he sulks and pulls away and essentially forces her to pay attention to him and coddle and wheedle his upset out of him. but that’s just me. what do you guys think?”
See idk if I’m just jaded but questions ab their “virginities” and each other’s opinions on them esp Mikasa’s come off strange to me bc this really and truly is not a big deal nor should it be 😭
Regardless of what I just said and bouncing off what you wrote -> For me his jealousy isn’t that he wasn’t her first but him being coming to the realization that his assumptions weren’t as obvious as he thought they were (so basically what u were saying 😭)
It bothers him in a “oh I want to be hers” way more than “it should’ve been me” way imo
yeah, i get what you’re saying. my point about eren is less that he feels a sense of ownership over her (which. i think. even if he does, he also doesn’t. he doesn’t want her to think of him as someone who tries to assert control over her because Freedom) and more that he has assumptions about their relationship that are not communicated well. i picture eren as the kind of person who is a romantic in a very unique way, in that he thinks of himself and mikasa as soulmates, and assumes that even if they aren’t in a relationship, there is an understanding that they will be. mikasa, however, is not a mind reader and is also a very different person. i don’t think mikasa makes assumptions about what she is in his life, because she defines their relationship by the boundaries of what is explicitly stated. if they are known as friends, she thinks they are friends and will occupy that space in his life, regardless of if she wants more. that’s half of their drama😭
i honestly really love this dynamic too. i’ve said to charlotte before that eren wants the lion’s share of her affection whereas mikasa is comfortable with the scraps of his. it sounds very sad (and it is very sad) but i think it says something about the extent of their co-dependency.

bonnie-barstow-of-flag asked : Name one of your favorite tropes. What has influenced your writing and blog? If you’re an oc blog, did you have any characters in mind while creating your character? What is a trope you’ve always wanted to subvert? Is there a fact/detail about your muse that you think would surprise people if you told them about it? Name a question you’ve always wanted to be asked about your muse.
Easy Meme for a Burnt Out Mun. / @bonnie-barstow-of-flag -- accepting
Name one of your favorite tropes.
Someone would probably say my favorite trope is dead parents because somehow in almost every character I write or oc I create, a parent is dead. (Cassie, Varric, Sean, Eleanor, Evie, Jacob, Milton, Baker, Abe, Astrid). But that’s just an unexpected similarity between my muses and with ocs, it adds some drama in their backstory. (Though, if I made another oc, I wouldn’t have this be the case).
I think I know some tropes, but not off the top of my head, and I don’t have just one. I love characters like Evie who are confident, intelligent, but also guarded with their heart. I love enemies to lovers, lovers to enemies. I especially love when two enemies work together for a cause that benefits both of them and that might be taking down enemy number 3. Romantic fluff from people in two different social classes. The hero that doesn’t want to be the hero, but is destined to be. Cuddling for body warmth. Slowburn. Fake relationship or arranged marriage (but not abusive).
What has influenced your writing and blog?
A lot of things! For aesthetics, I take from various other blogs, but I’m not graphic savvy, so I tend to not change things up. Luckily, I have been able to keep my blogs aesthetically pleasing with my limited graphic ability. For my writing as a whole: my rp partners. I do take some inspiration from various authors and I save descriptions and lines I really enjoy from various pieces of literature. I’ve been trying to get more into the hobby of reading, but most of my writing influence has come from my rp partners. I think with the variation of rp threads across all of my blogs and my close mutuals, I have been influenced a lot by their writing. It especially helps with improving my writing and developing my character more.
At the moment, I’m switching between multiple books, but the S.ong of A.chillies has been my writing inspiration recently. I usually get swept up into the idea that long writing means more interesting writing and I must go all out with details, but with MIllers’ writing of short sentence style, she puts so much detail and life into her short sentence structure that its a nice reprieve to read something that doesn’t go on and on (that requires much thought and concentration between my heavy academic workload). It’s a relatively light read and while I have some issues with the book, I do love her simple writing style because it holds so much vivid, beautiful description in just a single sentence. I do like Amy Harmon in terms of authors that I’ll read her other work. I wish I could write like her and create such unique voices in my writing and her hold and variety with her characters. A narrator in one book sounds like a completely different person from the next and she masters writing in two different povs perfectly so that the book doesn’t lose its flow. I highly recommend “What the Wind Knows” & “Where the Lost Wander”. Ron Hansen moreso for his very, very descriptive writing, but his writing is so description heavy and long that I don’t want to end up that way in my own writing. I usually take bits and pieces from various authors and usually I look at authors for the way they describe a scene. But ultimately, I am influenced by my rp partners.
If you’re an oc blog, did you have any characters in mind while creating your character?
I don’t so much have a character in mind so much as a concept. All of my muses have originated from a concept or an idea I had in mind.
Cassie: I wanted a character that was softer amongst the rather bleak and angsty background of my muses. They all vary, but a lot of them have a bit of angst to them. Cassie does, no doubt, have a tragic backstory tied to her and has become more angsty with time, but instead of the rather angry and violent nature of most of my muses, Cassie is the soft daisy in my muse list. I also wanted to toy with an idea that in r.dr2’s world setting in the V.an der l.inde gang that there was an avid gardener in their crew.
Eleanor: I really liked the idea of a journalist/reporter. When the western/r.dr2 rpc was more active, people tended to make either bounty hunters or outlaw muses. It makes sense because the game and the time period tend to focus on either two, but I did like the idea of someone on the “outside” that can interview these rugged figures. I also felt like Eleanor was a breath of fresh air to me because I write like multiple outlaws and one Pinkerton agent.
Lydia: When I watched t.urn the later half of 2019 and made Lydia in early 2020, I believe, I really wanted to make a character of my own that interacted with the t.urn characters. I wanted to see what connections she would have. The rpc was very small then. It is small now, but it is way, way more active than it was then. Then more people came in and I wrote Lydia more, which really strengthened her character. Luckily, many people have indulged me with Lydia, developing her character more and providing me with a variety of different interactions that can help, in turn, direct her development as a whole. I'm still interested in seeing where dynamics can go with her.
Arala: I hardly use her and I’m debating if I want to drop her altogether. S.tar w.ars was a big part of my childhood. I would draw Darth Vader on paper in pencil until my hand hurt and my pale skin was dark. Honestly, the s.tar w.ars rpc intimidates me really heavily and I don’t have as much knowledge as I used to on the series. I remember the basics, but I would have to remember all of the stuff again. I made it after watching the new trilogy and i wanted someone who can shift to either side and was mostly out for herself. Most of my ocs tend to be on the softer side (even temperament Lydia) and I wanted someone who was angry, self-centered, and focused on her own survival. Exhibiting very masculine leaning traits.
What is a trope you’ve always wanted to subvert?
I’m not really sure what this is asking me and I tend to not stick to or think of tropes generally in my writing, so my answer is limited.
Generally, I find it kinda annoying that a love interest has to be part of almost every movie. I know it adds drama and motivation, but I think shows can flesh out a love interest better than a movie unless there’s a sequel. Unless it’s specifically a romcom or anything, I don’t ever feel any connection to a relationship in a movie. I think if you have to always include a love interest in something, it can show lazy writing imo.
The twin trope is that they are psychic or whatever. I write a pair of twins on here (Evie & Jacob) and they do exhibit some of the tropes for twins (one is more serious vs the comedic relief who tells the other twin to chill out), but Evie does exhibit some mischievousness to her character. Hardly, but it’s there if you squint. I also think their backstory and the storyline in the game give them more of a reason for why they are this way. I also dislike the trope for twins that are eerily similar, like basically copies of one another, but the whole psychic twin thing bugs me. I have a pair of twins in my family and while they are a bit different, they aren’t complete opposites, but they aren’t the exact same either. They’re like regular siblings and people.
Honorable mentions: love triangles, cheating plots (... not about a certain spy show, I swear /sarcasm).
Is there a fact/detail about your muse that you think would surprise people if you told them about it?
Oh god I’m not sure. It depends I guess on what muse it is? For Evie, I stick close to canon, but kinda expand on some of her traits. So her more perfectionist, workaholic, and more reluctance to fall in love and give into her feelings may surprise some? Probably something about each muse of mine would surprise someone since I tend to add a few of my own ideas/take to them that are a bit different from canon.
Uh, Cassie Roosevelt has no connection to Teddy Roosevelt despite the name.
Name a question you’ve always wanted to be asked about your muse.
It depends on the ask meme and what it is. I have wanted to talk about a certain thing with a specific muse over my time spent writing, but I have completely forgotten about it. Usually, if that’s the case, I’ll just make a headcanon post about it and talk about it there. But there are times where I want to talk about a ship or a dynamic, but i don’t want to annoy my rp partner about my thoughts. I tend to go deep into my dynamics as I do with everything revolving around characters, so I try to refrain from that because I know that’s not for everyone. So I keep my ramblings and plot ideas to myself most of the time.

Why being perfect is a load of rubbish
Tumblr media
Perfect. The most destructive word in the English language. Everyone wants to achieve it, to have it, to BE it and when that doesn’t happen, disappointment, shame and despair start to take over. Eroding at our self-esteem little by little until we become something we don’t even recognise. I loathe perfection with every fibre of my being. Not hate, LOATHE.
Its mere definition pisses me off, “being completely free of fault or defect, having no mistake or flaw.” I had fallen prey to the disease of wanting to be perfect when I was younger. I wanted to be the perfect daughter, the perfect sister, the perfect friend, the perfect girlfriend, the perfect student. I wanted to have the perfect body, the perfect hair, the perfect personality. I thought if I was perfect in everything, I would be happy and everyone would love me. But it’s a very cruel trick.
We have been made to believe that we can never be truly happy unless everything in our life is perfect; the perfect job, perfect house, perfect spouse, perfect car, perfect clothes, perfect faces. It took me several years and several failed attempts at perfection to realise how ridiculous this was. The idea that something or someone with flaws and faults was unworthy. I have only two words for this: FUCK THAT. {If there are any children reading this, kindly quote this article when your mum asks you where you learnt to swear. Thanks. ;)}
Tumblr media
Having faults and flaws means being different, unique. A breath of fresh air in a stifling room where there is no change or imagination. Why be perfect and be stuck in stagnation? Always remaining the same, never moving forward or trying to do or be something else. Never trying to be better than we were before, not for others but for ourselves, to see what else we’re capable of and be good at, just for the sake of it. Never trying new things and new experiences. Being perfect means being frozen and I can’t think of anything worse. This is the reason for my loathing.
Trying to be perfect forces us to take on too much, to be impatient, angry, hostile and competitive. News flash people, human beings were never meant to be perfect! If we were, we wouldn’t be able to make mistakes and if we weren’t able to make mistakes, we wouldn’t be able to change and if we can’t change, we are not living.
Tumblr media
Do you even want a “perfect” body or face? Honestly, I don’t think that putting in the effort for abs is worth it for me. I would rather play Assassin’s Creed and binge-watch Supernatural.
A perfect face? Every blemish, freckle and spot on your face is a mark that sets you apart from everyone else, something that is so uniquely you and you want to trade it for a face that is plain? For those with acne struggles, that is completely understandable and you are excused. Women used to draw spots on their faces in the 18th century because it was considered the height of beauty. Marilyn Monroe and Cindy Crawford inspired the same.
Family life: Do you care about one another? Make each other laugh, give support whenever needed? Then you checked off the main points. If not, that’s what you should be trying to fix.
Relationship: Relationships can’t be perfect if they are to last longer than 6 months and if you think yours is, then you are lying to yourself and to your partner. Let’s be honest with each other, darling. If Pique can cheat on FREAKING SHAKIRA, there is no such thing as perfect.
Tumblr media
Social life: You might be serious about being a great friend/ person in general, but no one is immune from social ups and downs including loneliness, social burnout, FOMO, friendship drama, etc. The mistakes we make are what help guide us to being those great friends and people.
Character: There may be some times when you have displayed tremendous courage, kindness, absolutely non-selfish service and that’s great. Well done you, continue doing so. On the other hand, there will be times when you will stumble; act selfishly, say or do the wrong thing but that doesn’t make you a terrible human being. Life isn’t all sunshine, rainbows and skittles.
Now, if you’re counting, that’s every part of a person’s life and it doesn’t have to be perfect for it to be happy. The only things in my life that I want to be perfect are my bed and internet connection, screw everything else.

Top Ten Historical Figures Done Dirty by The Terror (2018)
So, we all know and love Dave Kajganich and Soo Hugh’s beautiful show, right? Of course. But it’s important to set the historical record straight, especially when there are real people’s life-stories and legacies on the line.
(NOTE: this list is biased heavily toward upper-class individuals because the historical record does a better job preserving those voices for us. Was the real Cornelius Hickey as nasty a person in real life as he was in the show? Almost certainly not – which is why we’re given “E.C.” as a nod to the fact that we shouldn’t assume these characters represent real historical villains, even when the narrative makes them antagonists; HOWEVER, not everyone in the show was given the same courtesy as the OG “Cornelius Hickey.” Which is why this post exists – to show you the best sides of some people you might not otherwise appreciate for their full humanity. That being said, keep in mind the sources used – and, for instance, who has surviving portraits and who doesn’t.)
Thus, below the cut, I give you this list, (mostly) in order from #10 (honorable mention, only somewhat slandered) to #1 (most hideously maligned) – my list of characters from The Terror who deserved better.
(Please don’t take this too seriously – I know there are reasons why choices had to be made in order to make this show work on television, and I do very much love the end product. But I also genuinely think it’s a good idea to remember the real people behind these characters, and think critically about how we depict them ourselves.)
Bottom Tier – The Overlooked Men of the Franklin Expedition
#10. Richard Wall – & – John Diggle
We’re combining these two because they had a lot in common, historically speaking! Both were polar veterans, having served as a Cook (Wall) and an AB-then-Quartermaster (Diggle) on HMS Erebus under the command of Sir James Clark Ross in the Antarctic expedition of 1839-1843. Certainly we do get some good scenes with them in the show, but there was plenty more to explore there – for instance, Captain Ross was apparently so taken with Richard Wall that he hired him on as a private cook after the Antarctic expedition. (One imagines that Sir James may have regretted letting his friends of the Franklin expedition steal Wall out from under him.)
(If you want some more information on Diggle, the brilliant @handfuloftime found this excellent article on him – fun facts include the detail that Diggle’s only daughter bore the name Mary Ann Erebus Diggle.)
#9. John Smart Peddie
Now, I don’t think we should go as far as the Doctor Who Audio Drama adaptation of the Franklin Expedition, which makes Peddie into Francis Crozier’s oldest friend, someone “almost like a brother” to Crozier (no evidence of ANY prior relationship between the two existed, contrary to whatever the Doctor Who Audio Dramas would have you believe!) but Peddie probably earned his place as chief surgeon, however fond we may all be of the beautiful Alex “Macca” MacDonald, who was, in fact, the Assistant Surgeon, historically speaking. It’s hard to find information about Peddie, but someone should go looking! I want to know about this man!
(If you want to know more about the historical Alexander MacDonald, there’s a short biographical article on him from Arctic that you can read here.)
#8 James Walter Fairholme
Tumblr media
The only one of the expedition’s lieutenants who doesn’t really get any characterization in the show, which is a travesty! The historical Fairholme (pronounced “Fairem”) was, as they say, a himbo, and the letters that he wrote home to his father are positively precious. He loved the expedition pets (lots of kisses for Neptune!), and he needed two kayaks because he couldn’t fit into just one with his beefy thighs. Fitzjames loaned him a coat when all the Erebus officers had their portraits taken, and then called him a “smart, agreeable companion, and a well informed man,” and Goodsir singled Fairholme out as “very much interested” in the work of naturalist observations. Just a lovely young man who could have gotten some screen time, you know?
(Also, as @transblanky discovered, four separate members of the Fairholme family gave money to Thomas Blanky’s widow when she was struggling financially in the 1850s, making them, combined, the most generous contributor to her subscription.)
Middle Tier – Franklin’s Men Who Didn’t Deserve That
#7. William Gibson
Alright, I want to talk about how uniquely horrible the show’s William Gibson is: this is a character willing to lie and accuse his partner of sexual assault that didn’t happen. I get there were extenuating circumstances, but if I were a historical figure who died in some famous disaster and someone depicted me doing something like that? Let’s just say I’m deeply offended on the real Gibson’s behalf.
What do we know about the historical William Gibson? Not much – but we know a little. Gibson’s younger brother served on an overland exploratory venture across Australia in the 1870s… from which he never returned. (God, the Gibson family had the worst luck?) This description of a conversation that young Alf Gibson had with expedition leader Ernest Giles only days before his death is VERY eerie:
[Gibson] said, “Oh! I had a brother who died with Franklin at the North Pole, and my father had a deal of trouble to get his pay from government.” He seemed in a very jocular vein this morning, which was not often the case, for he was usually rather sulky, sometimes for days together, and he said, “How is it, that in all these exploring expeditions a lot of people go and die?”
I said, “I don't know, Gibson, how it is, but there are many dangers in exploring, besides accidents and attacks from the natives, that may at any time cause the death of some of the people engaged in it; but I believe want of judgment, or knowledge, or courage in individuals, often brought about their deaths. Death, however, is a thing that must occur to every one sooner or later.”
To this he replied, “Well, I shouldn't like to die in this part of the country, anyhow.” In this sentiment I quite agreed with him, and the subject dropped.
(From Giles’s Australia Twice Traversed which you can read here)
Beyond that, one thing we do know is that William Gibson was probably friends with Henry Peglar – they had served on ships together before, and Gibson may possibly have been the poor fellow found cradling the Peglar Papers, according to researcher Glenn Stein. So we might imagine the historical Gibson as a much kinder man than the show’s depiction of him – this was someone who befriended the clever, playful Peglar we all know and love from the transcriptions of his papers, so full of poetry and linguistic jokes. It’s a shame we didn’t get a chance to meet this real Gibson, who actually knew the Henry Peglar whom we love so well.
#6. Stephen Stanley
Tumblr media
Look. There’s that one famous line in James Fitzjames’s letters to the Coninghams about how Stanley went about with his “shirt sleeves tucked up, giving one unpleasant ideas that he would not mind cutting one’s leg off immediately – ‘if not sooner.’” And certainly Harry Goodsir had some mixed opinions of the man, saying was “a would be great man who as I first supposed would not make any effort at work after a time,” and that he “knows nothing whatever about subject & is ignorant enough of all other subjects,” whatever…. that means….
But Fitzjames also had some rather nicer things to say about him, that he was “thoroughly good natured and obliging and very attentive to our mess.” Also, the amputation comment? Very likely had a quite positive underlying joke to it – Stanley may not have been much of a naturalist, but he was actually an accomplished anatomist, who won a prize for dissection in 1836, on account of his “bend of the elbow,” which was “a picture of dissection,” according to Henry Lonsdale, who also called Stanley his “facetious friend” and “a fine fellow” (Lonsdale 1870, pg. 159). So, the real Stanley probably was rather droll, but the perpetually cruel Stanley of the show misses some of the real man’s major historical virtues and replaces them with historically unlikely mass-mercy-murder.
#5. John Irving
Tumblr media
Now we’re getting into the territory of characters who did get some good development, but are missing a bit of historical nuance. As I’m sure many of you know, the historical Irving was indeed very religious, but the flashes of anger (i.e. against Manson) we see from Irving in the show don’t seem terribly consistent with the Irving depicted in this memorial volume, where John seems more like a quiet, bookish, mathematically inclined young man, with a self-deprecating sense of humor and a gentle sweetness. It’s really not at all far off from the version of Irving we see with Kooveyook in the show – I just wish we could have seen more of that side of Irving.
Top Tier – The Triumvirate of Polar Friends
So, these three DO have many good things to recommend them in the show, but because I’ve done such deep research on them, it can be quite jarring to watch certain scenes in which they behave contrary to their historical personalities, and I find myself pausing when watching the show with friends or family to explain that NO, they wouldn’t do that!
#4. Sir James Clark Ross
Tumblr media
First thing – we LOVE Richard Sutton. He did a beautiful job with the material given to him. (This is true of all the actors on the list, frankly, but it’s doubly true here.) But that scene at the Admiralty where Sir James tells Lady Franklin “I have many friends on those ships, as you know,” to shut down her argument for search missions? At that time (aka 1847), historically, Sir James Clark Ross was actively campaigning for search missions, planning routes and volunteering his services in command of any vessel the Admiralty even vaguely contemplated sending out. You could see this real-life desperation in Sir James’s morose attention to his whiskey glass in that scene if you’re really trying, but I think the more historically responsible thing would have been to make vividly clear that James Ross risked life and limb, as soon as he possibly could, to try to rescue Franklin and Crozier and Blanky, men he’d known and cared about and bitterly missed – and, in the case of Crozier, “truly loved.”
#3. Sir John Franklin
Tumblr media
The historical Franklin had plenty of flaws – his contributions to British colonial rule certainly harmed no small number of people, and we should question the way that heroic statues of Franklin are some of the only memorials that serve to honor the lives lost on Franklin’s expeditions – especially considering the steep body count of not only Franklin’s final voyage, but his previous missions in Arctic regions as well. (DM me and I’ll scream at you about counter-monuments! Is this a promise or a threat? Who knows!) With that said, most contemporary accounts agree that Sir John Franklin treated his friends, his family, and those within his social orbit with kindness, and his cruelties were systemic, not personal. In this light, the image of Sir John viciously tearing into Francis Crozier’s vulnerabilities in the show feels very off. Though there was certainly some friction over Crozier’s two proposals to Sophia Cracroft, historically speaking, there’s no evidence at all that Sir John discouraged her from marrying Francis – Sophia may have had many reasons of her own (*clears throat meaningfully in a lesbian sort of way*) for not accepting any of the several marriage proposals offered to her (from Crozier as well as from others), and we ought to keep in mind that she remained unmarried all her life. The notion that the real Sir John would have considered Crozier too low-born or too Irish to be part of the Franklin family isn’t grounded in historical fact.
#2. Lady Jane Franklin
Tumblr media
Again disclaimer: the real Lady Franklin left behind a legacy with much to critique. Those who rightfully point out the racism of her treatment of the young indigenous Tasmanian girl Mathinna should be fully heard out. Observations of her own contributions to imperialism are important and valid. Though I tend to see her feud with Dr. John Rae as somewhat understandable – given that Lady Franklin didn’t have the benefit of our hindsight knowing Rae was correct – the levels of prejudice that she enabled and even encouraged in the writing of Charles Dickens when he attempted to discredit Inuit accounts of Franklin’s fate are inarguably deplorable. These things being said, everything noted for Sir John re: Sophia Cracroft goes for Lady Franklin as well – there’s no reason to imagine a scene where Jane would bully Francis Crozier within an inch of his life, seconds after a failed second proposal, when, historically, Lady Franklin felt the situation was so delicate that it required the quiet and compassionate intervention of Sir James Clark Ross, a dearly loved mutual friend to all parties. Tension does not imply aggression; conflict is not abuse. We know this can’t have been an easy experience for the historical Francis Crozier, but the picture is a lot more complicated than what can be shown in one small subplot of a ten-episode television show. Because of this complexity, however, Lady Franklin’s social deftness suffers in the show. (I could also write an entire essay about Jane Franklin’s last shot in the show, at the beginning of Episode 9: The C the C the Open C – TL;DR is that framing is very important, and, at the very last moment, the show reframes Lady Franklin as a mutilated corpse, a speaking mouth without a brain, which is….. a choice.)
And, at number 1, the person done most dirty by The Terror (2018) is….
#1. Charles Frederick “Freddy” Des Voeux
Tumblr media
Look. I’m biased here because I am fed daily information about the historical Freddy Des Voeux from @frederickdesvoeux so I’ve become, I think understandably, a bit attached.
But this is very plainly the clearest cruelty the show does to a historical figure – the historical Des Voeux was a very young man (only around 20 when the ships set sail) known always as “Frederick or Freddy” to his family, and described by all parties as bright and sweet – Fitzjames said that he was “a most unexceptionable, clever, agreeable, light-hearted, obliging young fellow, and a great favourite of Hodgson’s, which is much in his favour besides,” and described him cheerfully helping to catch specimens for Goodsir. Des Voeux is named “dear” by Captain Osborn in Erasmus Henry Brodie’s 1866 poem on the Franklin Expedition (43) and Leo McClintock reported the young man’s well-known “intelligence, gallantry, and zeal” in his 1869 update to his account of the Franklin Expedition’s fate (xlii). None of this is consistent with Des Voeux’s behaviour in the show, especially in the later episodes.
To reduce Des Voeux to an easily-detested figure, over whose death one might cheer, is not a kindness – the creation of a narrative where his death is satisfying does damage to the memory of a real person, a barely-more-than-teenager who died in the cold of the Arctic and left behind only scraps of a shirt and a spidery signature in the bottom margin of a fragmentary document.
Television shows may need their villains, but it’s important to remember that real life isn’t like that. Surely the historical Frederick Des Voeux was most likely not a perfect person, and, as an upper class officer contributing to a British imperial project, he does bear some responsibility for the harm done by the Franklin expedition, but it’s not accurate to assume he was any less worthy of sympathy than the other officers who considered him a friend – those men whom we now venerate, like James Fitzjames. So as far as I’m concerned, Freddy Des Voeux deserves at least as much consideration, care, and compassion from us.

Loki sees the return of the titular fan-favorite MCU character, and it's a reminder as to just how damn charming Tom Hiddleston can be. Hiddleston may be best known as Thor’s contemporaneous younger brother, but let's talk about how his full range as an actor was best displayed in the underappreciated 2016 miniseries, The Night Manager. The six-part John le Carre adaptation from writer David Farr and director Susanne Bier cast Hiddleston as Jonathan Pine, a veteran working as the late-night host of a luxury resort in Egypt who gets recruited into ab undercover operation by British Intelligence. The idea of Hiddleston playing an everyman felt like a novelty at the time, but over the series' six hours he delivered his most emotionally grounded and understated performance to date.
John le Carre adaptations are often complex, incorporating hyper-realistic political intrigue with frequent betrayals and double-crosses, and many of the best have entered their interconnected storylines through the perspective of a common man. Hiddleston excels at showing how overwhelmed Pine becomes with the dangerous world he falls into. Because of his job as a night manager, the character is expected to bring a certain charisma energy to all his interactions. Hiddleston brilliantly shows the cracks in that performative magnetism during his first encounter with the renowned arms dealer Richard Roper (Hugh Laurie), who stuns Pine by bringing his villainous gang to the Cairo hotel.
Pine is able to gain Roper’s trust, as his experience in the Iraq War prepared him for life or death scenarios. Pine’s expertise at de-escalating a dangerous situation is previewed within the second episode, in which he saves Roper’s young son Daniel (Noah Jupe) during a business dinner. His wartime history isn’t Pine’s only characteristic, but it’s an integral part of the role that he brings nuance to without overtly expository passages. In fact, it’s his first-hand experience seeing the devastation of chemical weapons in Iraq that gives Pine the motivation to first engage in the scheme to take down Roper. It's also what gives Hiddleston such a layered role. It’s interesting to see Pine incorporate his experience as a soldier within the crafted backstory he must present to Roper; he’s certainly no stranger to violence, but the persona he must adopt requires Pine to pretend to have a criminal background, something that’s far removed from his ordinary professionalism. If Loki’s performative quality leaned into theatricality, Hiddleston has to portray a much different type of deception here. Watching Pine’s illusion crack as Roper's suspicions grow provides the central tension of the series.
The Night Manager is also a more action-centric role than Hiddleston had done before; Loki often utilized minions and amusing shenanigans to avoid actual fights, but here Hiddleston shows an impressive physicality that is dynamic within the action sequences. It’s not a surprise thatThe Night Manager landed Hiddleston's name as a potential candidate to play James Bond, as his introductory scene within the hectic gunfire of the Egyptian Revolution bears a resemblance to Daniel Craig’s iconic crane fight in Casino Royale.
But It’s not just the relentless action that inspired Hiddelston’s proposed candidacy for 007. The Night Manager is also a sleek romance. Pine and Roper’s girlfriend Jed (Elizabeth Debicki) begin to fall for each other during his prolonged operation, and Pine must show his affection for her while making sure he doesn’t reveal any critical information that could endanger the mission. Hiddleston certainly proved that he can bring pathos to a tender romance in 2013's Only Lovers Left Alive, but here he’s able to blend intimacy within the web of le Carre’s interconnected narrative.
It’s also interesting to see Hiddleston play opposite Laurie, whose villainous turn as Roper is everything you would want from a spy series antagonist. Hiddleston is used to being the scene-stealer (Loki never fails to get the last word in), but he has to show some restraint here when Roper unleashes his brutality. Roper’s exhaustive cruelty is perhaps the only aspect of The Night Manager that risks breaking the line of believability, and in a subversion of his normal roles, Hiddleston is the one reigning things back in.
It's a wonderfully understated role that's only more fascinating next to the rest of Hiddleston's filmography. Although the MCU has certainly improved on its villains recently, Loki was really the only compelling antagonist of the first two phases. Not only was Loki the rare bad guy whose motivation and backstory were just as compelling as his archnemesis (and perhaps even more so), Hiddleston brought a signature personality to the role that was sorely lacking among the bland CGI manifestations. Ten years after the first Thor film, Loki has become one of the most fleshed-out characters in the entire franchise; when it was first indicated that supporting characters would begin receiving spinoffs, a Loki series was an automatic suggestion. Hiddleston has leveraged his Marvel celebrity well, choosing to spotlight more experimental genre films from maverick auteurs in his time between MCU installments, including Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak, Ben Wheatley’s High Rise, and Joanna Hogg’s Exhibition.
That’s a pretty diverse selection of genres and filmmakers, but for the most part, Hiddleston's performances have leaned into eccentricity and villainous charisma. A few of Hiddleston's attempts at shedding his inherent idiosyncrasies in favor of more streamlined leading roles have landed with a thud. The 2015 Hank Williams biopic I Saw The Light was met with a tepid response and immediately forgotten within the awards season cycle, and he was unfortunately saddled with an unbelievably bland role in the Monsterverse installment Kong: Skull Island that was overshadowed by more entertaining co-stars like John C. Reilly and Samuel L. Jackson.
The Night Manager demonstrated Hiddleston is more than capable of a well-rounded lead performance, both understated and bold in equal measure. Anyone who caught the le Carre adaptation already knew Hiddleston has what it takes to lead a series; not all Marvel side-characters can carry six hours of storytelling, but Hiddleston has already proven himself up to the task once. It’s unlikely that Loki will be the last time Hiddleston appears in the Marvel franchise, but I hope it launches him into something in the same vein as The Night Manager. (Here's to hoping his upcoming role in the Apple TV+ drama The Essex Serpent has the same depth.) Hiddleston is clearly a great actor who brings unique qualities to his parts, but The Night Manager is the only one that allowed him to show all of them at the same time.

[Most. Understated. Role. Pine???? Hey Collider, maybe we have watched a whole different show? This is clearly an opinion piece, so take it with a pinch of salt.]

I hope you decide to write for Haikyu the stories you have written for Saeran are some of my favorites! 🌸 Sugawara makes so much sense if you’re a V fan too! Daichi is my favorite character. -🐱
Hi again kitten,
I may or may not be planning something in February to ease my way into that fandom. 😘
It also makes me happy you’ve enjoyed my Saeran pieces. He’s an interesting character to write for (maybe because there’s so many of them).
Oooo you think so? I can see some similarities — there’s a sort of unique softness to both of them, I think. But they are also wildly different, not to mention Sugawara comes with less drama (and deranged ex-girlfriends running cults) and guilt.
Daichi is definitely appealing — he’s very handsome (I bet he has some nice abs) and has a strong personality. What do you like about him? ♥️

1: HamilTurn(you can differentiate if needed) or MCU, 2: Washette, 3: Anna Strong
And generally a fandom list would be nice to know what to pick from ;) (Love you♡)
You said HamilTurn or MCU and I say both, I'm going to try my best haha. But anyway, thank you!:) Apologies in advance if this gets rambly, but that's the point of this right? Anyway, for ease of scrolling sake, I'll probably put a cut if this gets long but don't worry, it's just me talking a whole bunch lol. Ok, thank you again!! <3 (love you too!)
1. Hamilton/Turn (fandom)
Favorite character: I have to say Lafayette for both. Oh and Mary
Least favorite character: I have no real reason behind this so sorry but Burr, and Simcoe for many reasons
5 favorite ships: washette, lams, hamliza, benwash, whamilton
Character I find most attractive: ...all. But I have to say overall Brian Wiles as Lafayette. That face just…🥺
Character I would marry: Mary Woodhull or Eliza
Character I would be best friends with: you know I'm not sure, but in an ideal world Lafayette (both versions) or Ben but I feel like we wouldn't be best friends. But also everyone, is that an option? Even some of the "villains" would have good stories to tell
A random thought: I feel like most people in the fandom now are so new (they joined in with the movie release!) and unaware of the uh atrocities of back in the day. And y'all are lucky, but those of us who know. Know. (yes, I was unbearable but that's ok because I was having fun, and despite what I just said: have fun in your fandoms even if you're "unbearable", just keep it welcome to all and enjoy the enthusiasm you have for it:))
An unpopular opinion: Oh boy. Maybe stop making quick judgments about people based on what they write/who they ship? There is a line, but I've genuinely never seen it crossed by anyone at least openly sooo just let people have fun? And don't say anything about something? Unless it's actually harmful but even then, keep it to a dm or something and have an open discussion. Just let people vibe, please? Especially younger fans. Just, I’ve seen a weird amount of negativity towards them. They’re kids having fun, we all used to be like that so please, be kind and patient. They’ll learn if they make a mistake. Ok? Ok cool:) (maybe not unpopular but still I wanted to say it)
My canon OTP: Am I allowed to say lams?
My non-canon OTP: washette, wow, who would've guessed? xD
Most badass character: Mary my beloved
Most epic villain: Robert Rogers hands down
Pairing I am not a fan of: no one murder me, but in general I'm just not a fan of jamilton. also whatever was the deal with Anna and Abe
Characters I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): um. Where to begin? Honestly I think every woman in Turn at one point or another, except perhaps Peggy in my opinion. Oh but especially Anna. Also Simcoe. With Hamilton, probably again everyone at some point, but the way Angelica was written just feels so overwhelmingly fictional it bugs me. (But at least Hamilton had some genuine relationships between women, not great but still)
Favorite friendship(s): Ben and Caleb, Washington and Lafayette (what?? yes, you fools. lol). It may sound a tad ~cringey~ but I generally like Hamilton's vibe with the boys, maybe it's just the gender envy, but it's kinda cute and fun.
Character I most identify with: well jeez, I won't lie but Washington. In both versions, except god knows I could never be that chill. Also a dash of Laurens.
Character I wish I could be: wow what a loaded question ummm. I don't want to be like him, but I want to be like in his position so Hamilton lol. Playing an active role but I know personally I am not cut out for a battlefield, so a desk suits me well.
2. MCU (fandom-that I am so out of date from, please take all of this with a grain of salt)
Favorite character: so when I was younger it was Tony Stark but now it’s definitely Wanda and T’challa
Least favorite character: ummm. I genuinely couldn’t tell you, I’m very out of date
5 favorite ships (canon or non-canon): wandavision, …ngl I can’t think of anymore, I honestly never shipped many and wandavision was like the only couple I remember really liking. Oh, I don’t know them but Loki/Mobius and/or Sylvie
Character I find most attractive: embarrassing confession time, Loki was my first bad celebrity crush. Wanda now and Shuri is cute. Also Sylvie
Character I would marry: if I could, Wanda
Character I would be best friends with: Vision and Peter Parker
A random thought: y’all it’s been so long since I’ve touched MCU I should catch up/refresh shouldn’t I?
An unpopular opinion: I don’t know if this is an unpopular opinion but I’m going to say it anyway. Personally, I really don’t like the movie Civil War, I think it’s what sorta made me disinterested in mcu. It’s been years since I’ve watched it so maybe I would have a completely different opinion if I saw it today, but at the time it just felt so...wrong? And childish? I literally don’t even remember why they were fighting or how that movie even ended (I feel like it just wasn’t satisfying??) but I think also, as a kid or teen watching that, it reminded me sooo much of the dumb drama that, you know, kids get into. I mean, getting your friends on someone’s side like that?? Like, I know they were mad but- but there are other ways of dealing with emotions??? And involving everyone's friends too? So yeah, it just felt off to me at the time, and looking back now, from what I remember, it just frustrated me. Especially as a kid who deals with dumb drama like that all the time, kids would want to see a better example especially from adult superheroes or at least not be reminded of the bs they have to go through sometimes. But, rant over, that’s all just my opinion:)
My canon OTP: wandavision
My non-canon OTP: ummm. I guess just Loki/Mobius and/or Sylvie lol
Most badass character: I have to say Natasha but actually there are many
Most epic villain: when I was younger I liked that Ultron was voiced by Robert California from the Office lol
Pairing I am not a fan of: I don’t know if it’s popular but I never liked Tony and Pepper. What happened with her?
Characters I feel the writers screwed up: I guess I’ll say Thor because I just felt such a weird difference in his personality that did not make sense to me
Favorite friendship: Wanda and Pietro!! Honestly I think a lot, there were a lot of good friendships but I can’t think of which ones are my favorite
Character I most identify with: ummmmmm.
Character I wish I could be: My gut says Thor
3. Washette (ship-bless you<3 get ready for rambles oh no)
When I started shipping them: So I first had the thought in 7th grade while my history teacher was talking about them and my little brain went: haha that’s pretty gay. (teacher keeps talking about them) wait a fucking minute, that is pretty gay! But it wasn’t until I got sucked into Hamilton that I really started actively shipping them by reading fics and what not, but something about them became an instant favorite. And later (little personal story time) I pretty much completely stopped reading fic and being active in fandom for years and actually, when I got my first panic attack that - no joke - lasted for 5 hours, for some reason my brain (as it’s decaying lol) said I want to go and reread all my favorite washette fics and also do what I was I always too scared to do. Write!! So that night I binged the fics and found myself falling in love again, feeling all the old passion I had for them again, and the next night (still very shaken) I wrote an outline of a good ol washette confession + kiss that was extremely thoughtful and good, and honestly, I have not actually used that outline yet! Maybe I’m saving it. But yeah, this is a long answer, but I have a weird amount of attachment to them and this ship, I wish I knew why too. <3
My thoughts: so many. Too many. First of all, I love that I have so many versions of them in my mind, right? When I started writing, I had never watched Turn but then I did and then it was like: hell yeah, another washette set. At this point, my brain has created it’s own unique version of them but it’s like, they’re so versatile! That’s one neat thing about this fandom as a whole, we get more than one character and personality and that’s just fun right?! More specifically on washette I mean, they’re just so sweet. Historically, their relationship is unique and cute, and you’d have to be a fool to think that to Washington Lafayette was just another friend. Even strictly platonically, it was something special and it’s so obvious I just love them. Ok. Enough thoughts for now <3
What makes me happy about them: the loooove, the comfort they found in each other, the fact that like every person at the time documenting them knew and understood they were special to each other like, they were just that in love.
What makes me sad about them: oh so much that I try to ignore lol. There is the one year when Lafayette went to France and all his letters to Wash are like: “I have not received one letter from you, but it’s ok, I love you and I know you love me too :)” WHO WAS NOT DELIVERING THESE LETTERS, I HAVE NAMES, NOW I WANT ANSWERS. Anyway, also just most things that happened when Laf went back to France. And then when he visited America in 1824 and visited Washington’s grave. Yeah. ow. (also, you know what, I have done too much research on this event. lmk if you would like a post)
Things done in fanfic that annoy me: Generally, I’m not annoyed by much in fanfic at least with them and what I’ve seen. I’m still nostalgic for the old school nonbinary Laf fics, so it ain’t those. Literally maybe it’s because I’m starved for content but I can’t really think of anything, I love it all.
Things I look for in fanfic: back to the whole starved for content thing, I am a library of washette fics but I think if I was to pick a certain thing that I would love it’s just um fluff? And honesty, if that makes sense. Love confessions are very good as well. Canon era, please :) pining but not too much that it hurts me lol
My wishlist: literally all my wips. If I could whisk them into existence I could die happy and knowing I have put a variety of washette content in the world. Something else though, more fics :’) I love writing but sometimes I want to curl up with a cozy, new washette fic like a cup of hot chocolate and be surprised and learn something new and just..yeah:)
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: what. Ok but actually, Martha and Adrienne because they are both honestly perfect for them and I love them too (I’m going to be biased, especially Adrienne)
My happily ever after for them: Can Lafayette just move the family to America? But also, it’s sad, but like I know Laf would be sad in America while France suffers. So...maybe a world where things in France go better and Lafayette gets to visit Washington more often and bring the family!! (Washington visit France too??)
4. Anna Strong (character)
How I feel about this character: I like her! She’s fun and…strong (oops lol) and she’s made some mistakes sure, but I feel like she did her best to learn from them and move on
Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: Honestly, I know they didn’t have a lot of interaction in the show but Anna/Mary has potential. And Anna/Edmund
My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: her and Ben and Caleb
My unpopular opinion about this character: I really can’t think of anything unpopular
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: in general, her having more screen time with less men you know? I mean like one-on-one kind of scenes. Also I would’ve liked to see at least her and Selah talk. Like, really talk. They never really did that, right? I just have so many questions about them
Favorite friendship for this character: Anna and Ben
My crossover ship: I have no idea
And well, I know it’s been a few days but for a fandom list, I’m just a weeb lol but here
Octopath Traveler (my beloved)
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Star Wars
Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812
Persona 4
Zelda (to a point)
Pokémon
What We Do in the Shadows
Sailor Moon
Literally anything historical
Ok!! I tried to add a lot because I’m not sure what you might know or not haha. But thank you again!! I had fun <3

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993)
In American animation outside of Disney, no other studio inspires as much reverence as Warner Bros. The Merrie Melodies and Looney Tunes shorts precipitated into worldwide recognition for those series’ stock characters. Despite this success, Warner Bros. did not release an animated feature until the musical Gay Purr-ee (1962), in association with United Productions of America (UPA). Animators at Warner Bros. from the 1930-1960s knew they were not making high art, nor were they pretending to. Warners, since the 1930s arguably the most financially stable of the major Hollywood studios, has historically seen little need to bankroll animated features. With that in mind, it might come as less of a shock that Warner Bros.’ first in-house animated feature is Eric Radomski and Bruce Timm’s Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. Originally intended as a direct-to-home media release, Mask of the Phantasm – based on and made by the production team behind Batman: The Animated Series (1992-1995) – transcends those modest intentions. It is among of the best superhero films ever made.
In the wake of Tim Burton’s Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992), Batman: The Animated Series, unlike Burton’s efforts, affords time to characterize Bruce Wayne rather than surrendering ample screentime to thinly-written but scene-stealing villains. For that and many other reasons including the looming, vertical art deco-inspired production design of Gotham City; the distinctive and moodiness of its black paper backgrounds; and its balance of dark and lighter tones, BTAS remains a high-water mark among Batman fans – perhaps the best adaptation of the character there is. Mask of the Phantasm builds upon that foundation, in addition to crafting its own unique contribution within the DC Animated Universe (DCAU). As tired as origin stories are, Mask of the Phantasm is part-origin story for the Dark Knight – something largely avoided in BTAS – and somehow integrated here without distracting from the present-day scenes. Rarely is any Batman media a character study of Bruce Wayne, but Mask of the Phantasm proves itself a wonderful exception.
One evening, Batman/Bruce Wayne (Kevin Conroy) attempts to stop a gaggle of gangsters led by Chuckie Sol (Dick Miller) from laundering counterfeit money from a casino. Amid the scrum, Sol escapes from Batman, but immediately confronts a shadowy figure later known as the “Phantasm” in the parking garage – Sol dies in the confrontation. Batman receives the blame for the killing and the concurrent property destruction from Gotham City Councilman Arthur Reeves (Hart Bochner), who just so happened to be profiting from Sol’s racket. Across the film, Bruce reminisces about his courtship with Andrea Beaumont (Dana Delany), their breakup, and the lead-up to the creation of his Batman alter-ego. Juxtaposing Bruce’s past and present, we see how he channels his regrets and profound loss into being Batman. The past haunts him still, overhanging the high roofs of Wayne Manor and the ledges of Gotham’s skyscrapers. Back in the present day, the Phantasm has murdered another crime boss; a third murder involves the Joker (Mark Hamill), initiating an emotional dénouement that, because of the intricacies of motivation that the film develops, elevates the film beyond what might otherwise be sloppy storytelling.
The dramatis personae also includes crime boss Salvatore “The Wheezer” Valestra (Abe Vigoda); Andrea’s father, Carl Beaumont (Stacy Keach); the Wayne family butler, Alfred Pennyworth (Efrem Zimbalist Jr.); GCPD Commissioner James Gordon (Bob Hastings); and GCPD Det. Harvey Bullock (Robert Costanzo).
The screenplay by Alan Burnett (producer and writer on various DC Comics films and Hanna-Barbera productions), Paul Dini (head writer on BTAS and Superman: The Animated Series), Martin Pasko (a longtime DC Comics writer), and Michael Reaves (head writer on BTAS and 1994-1996’s Gargoyles) keep the film’s attention on Batman/Bruce Wayne, despite the introduction of various subplots and Joker – whose somewhat-questionable presence might seem to indicate a project going off the rails. Shadow of the Phantasm’s placement of flashbacks stems the awkwardness that Joker’s inclusion brings, assuring that the film stays grounded into Batman’s psychology. In past Bruce we see a charming young man with time, money, and looks to spare. His romantic side with Andrea is an element of his life, one that connects – inevitably, tangentially – to the trauma his parents’ murder. His most personal motivations – that which a younger Andrea could never see, and privy to only Alfred – are stuck in the past, circulating around that childhood loss.
The occasional reflections from Bruce Wayne on what his life has become make Mask of the Phantasm the most introspective piece within the BTAS continuity, freed from the constraints and expectations inherent of episodic television. No BTAS episode forces its eponymous character to confront himself to such extents. What Bruce Wayne and Batman have become in the present-day treads perilously close not to his style of vigilante corrective justice, but vengeance. The tragic paradox that lies at the heart of this tension is the soul of the Batman mythos. Anyone with the most basic understanding of who Bruce Wayne/Batman and the Joker are will at least have a glimmer of understanding of that paradox. This portrait of what Batman stands for is more maturely handled than any of the twentieth century live-action Batman films, and with less sensational filmmaking than Christopher Nolan and Zack Snyder could produce. But with the film’s screenplay and Kevin Conroy’s iconic voice acting as the Caped Crusader, it becomes an inquest into Bruce Wayne’s tortured soul.
If Mask of the Phantasm ran longer than its seventy-eight-minute runtime, Andrea Beaumont, too, might also have received similar character development as Bruce Wayne here. Even within those seventy-eight minutes, Andrea – with a great assist from Dana Delany’s voice acting (Delany so impressed Bruce Timm here that she was given the role of Lois Lane in Superman: The Animated Series) – is a nevertheless fascinating character. In a cruel irony, her ultimate role in Mask of the Phantasm is to be an incidental mirror to the violence that occurs in this film. Her decision is not an imposition, whether conscious or unconscious, from someone else, but hers and hers alone.
In this drama fit for opera, this Batman occupies a world of operatic proportions. The background and character animation are not as pristine as the best examples of BTAS due to some scattered bits of animation outsourcing. The animation of BTAS might seem stiff and janky to modern viewers expecting Flash hand-drawn animation or hand-drawn/CGI hybrids. However, Mask of the Phantasm retains the gravity-defying art deco of the animated series that somehow does not clash with the ‘90s-influenced and futuristic elements it integrates. Its primary inspirations are of film noir and the Metropolis seen in the Fleischer Studios’ Superman series of short films (1941-1943). The black paper backgrounds provide Gotham’s street corners and rooftops a nocturnal menace, immersing the viewer into the city’s seediness.
Composer Shirley Walker (orchestrator on 1979’s The Black Stallion, conductor and orchestrator on 1989’s Batman) was one of the few women composers in Hollywood at the turn of the twentieth into the twenty-first century. A pianist (she played with the San Francisco Symphony as a soloist while still in high school) who studied music composition at San Francisco State University, Walker would later become one of the first female film score composers to receive a solo credit for composing the music in John Carpenter’s Memoirs of an Invisible Man (1992). But it is her work in the DCAU that distinguishes her – of particular note is her arrangement of Danny Elfman’s theme to 1989’s Batman for BTAS and a wholly original main theme for Superman: The Animated Series. Though Walker could adjust her style to suit a more synthetic sound, she specialized in composing grand orchestral cues. That style was apparent in BTAS and is adapted here from the opening titles (the lyrics here are actually gibberish and are the names of Walker’s music department sung backwards). The foreboding brass and string unison lines seem to reverberate off the animation’s skyscraper-filled backgrounds. Numerous passages in Walker’s score, as if taking hints from Richard Wagner, elect not to resolve to the tonic – setting up scenes where tension escalates alongside the music, forestalling the dramatic and musical release.
youtube
One stunning exception to Walker’s ominous, atmospheric score is the gentle cue “First Love”, an interplay between solo oboe and synthesizer. Bruce’s flashbacks are not only a balm to the grimness of his present situation, but a musical reprieve from the intensity of the action scoring. That Walker can navigate between such differing moods exemplifies her compositional dexterity and overall musical excellence. Walker, who cited Mask of the Phantasm as her personal favorite composition for any film or television production, was one of the DCAU’s greatest under-heralded contributors. And how I wish she was given more chances to score different sorts of films.
Warner Bros.’ last-minute reversal on Mask of the Phantasm’s release strategy – abandoning the direct-to-home media debut for a theatrical release – meant minimal marketing for a low-budget film that made barely a dent at the box office. The film’s home media release would more than make up for the film’s theatrical release failure. Upon the success of BTAS and the critical acclaim lavished on Mask of the Phantasm, Warner Bros. kept the DCAU on television for another thirteen years, with infrequent direct-to-home media movie releases as recent as 2019.
For numerous DC Comics fans, the DCAU is an aesthetic and narrative touchstone. The limited animation is sublime for this period in animation history. In addition, one will overhear fans remaking that a certain superhero’s definitive portrayal might be thanks to the DCAU. The superhero benefitting the most from the DCAU’s characterization and storytelling is unquestionably Batman. And justifiably so, as Mask of the Phantasm shows due respect for Batman and Bruce Wayne – what molded them and how each persona intertwines with the other. The mythos behind any superhero is found not in fight scenes. Instead, it resides in the psychology and rationalizations that forces a person to directly confront another’s wickedness. Mask of the Phantasm realizes that such confrontations test Batman/Bruce Wayne’s remaining vestiges of humanity, and braves to ask moral questions that too many figures of superhero media would rather not think about.

learning to ignore the people who refuse to engage with the text and instead just whine about how ~bad~ the things i enjoy are was so much better for my mental health. like if you wanna rewrite r//wby into an anime trope fest have at it but i will be here in my corner writing my little stories and drawing my little pictures and having fun talking to my friends ab where i think the show is going 😌😌 (sidenote: following you and letting go of some of my leftover biases against jaune AND cinder from when i was 14 and bitter over pyrrha has been the best part of my 2021 🥰)
Yeah and it's not even really that I refuse to engage. It's that I know they refuse to engage and it's not two-way. Everybody wants to talk about 'criticism' and 'debate' until they can barely fucking manage it themselves. And to be truthful, I don't really want to hold a 'debate' about Cinder. You can read my posts and agree or not, but I'm not budging on the point that Cindemption is the most natural narrative answer.
On that note: when I think of 'contributing to a discourse,' I don't just mean in individual conversation with one other person, but to a greater whole. So, if my posts are out there on Cinder, whether people engage or not is another question. The more substantial answer I think is that 'it exists', and with the way Tumblr works, for instance, it can be seen in the tag and read as an audience response.
That's the thing though, on the note of trope fest, and where I'll admit the show exhibits its weaknesses. V1-2 are not sufficiently on the subversion train yet, as it does so in V3, and that was at least two years where people had an idea of another show in their heads. There was all that debate about 'is R/WBY an anime or isn't it,' and all of that stuff too. I think there's stuff in V1-2 which makes more sense read with V3, and there are things about the show easy to understand as being products of being such an independent production. To be truthful, R/WBY’s independence is one of the things I've always valued about it. Both as a product of art, and in the sense that I can only hope they keep telling the story that they want to tell. The most heartbreaking thing is when it becomes clear outside forces change a story. I think that's why I've always felt a little resentment to people wanting the story to go more commercial - e.g. playing into wish fulfilment anime tropes, refusing to read R/WBY as R/WBY, that type of thing, because the show is actually pretty unique. That's what I most value about it.
Plus, it hits the spot of all of the fairytale magic. >:)
(sidenote: following you and letting go of some of my leftover biases against jaune AND cinder from when i was 14 and bitter over pyrrha has been the best part of my 2021 🥰)
Well on that note, I'm very pleased! It's not really like I go out of my way to change minds, but with this being the case it does make me glad, and also glad to add something positive to this year. I remember when Pyrrha died and there had been the Jaune/Pyrrha kiss, I was really concerned about the fridged-girlfriend route they could have gone, and there was a while there where I was like 'me love drama but me worry', though I had really liked the Cinder and Pyrrha interaction which gave more intrigue to both of their characters. But yeah, for me personally I think they followed through on that well enough, and if they had not I would have been upset. I think one of the things that might change it, sort of in retrospect, is if they do Jaune/Weiss, because it nullifies (to my eyes) the platonic thread of his worry, and Pyrrha, Weiss and Ruby (which by virtue to me sort of changes the possible fridged-girlfriend characterisation in V4-5). Also, Ren says that Jaune has, 'No fear at all,' which is funny because I think he does and I feel like that line was supposed to make you worry lol.
But yes, in conclusion: I am glad you make your art and write your stories, it's very fun to see, and I really like your fic for that matter. I'm not one for 'toxic positivity', just to clarify - I just love the show, warts and all, but sort of the point I want to emphasise again is that like, I win nothing debating somebody who already wants to wilfully undermine me as well as the text. I also think that in the sense of 'me putting out an analysis post', anybody can read that, and that to me is already sort of a dialogue. The vagaries of the Internet, lol.
Thank you for liking my blog. (: I look forward to the J/NPR costume post, by the way, if you're still doing that.

Part 2
HONGJOONG ft. Hyunjin (Stray Kids)
Tumblr media
The group were dining in a famous restaurant. They like to spend few times with each other, without camera being around. They could talk about their life, privacy things or even girls. Since Hongjoong and you broke up, they tried to avoid this subject. That would be too awkward. “Guys!” yelled Wooyoung, “I can’t believe we won an award!” “Yes! Atinys are the best!” clapped San. “I wasn’t expecting to win an award this year!” confessed Mingi, grilling his meat. “We worked well! We can be proud of us guys!” said the leader. They enjoyed their meals till the end but Wooyoung noticed you at the back. He warned Hongjoong of your presence.
“Hyung!” he tapped his shoulder, “is that Y/N?” he pointed at you. The leader instantly recognized you. You were so beautiful, as always. This dress fit you so well and your smile… it could warm the entire restaurant. He noticed that you were grabbing this boy’s hand in front of you. “Is that Hyunjin with Y/N?” asked Yunho. “Seems like.” Said Hongjoong coldly.
It’s been 8 months now since you broke up. Hongjoong needed to focus on his career, but he regretted it. He couldn’t explain how he really felt toward you at his time so he just chose an easy option. “Should I go and talk to her?” asked Hongjoong. They all looked at their friend. “Why?” asked Seonghwa. He sighed, “I can’t handle seeing her happy with someone else.” He confessed. “You broke up with her. You can’t ask her to get back to you because you saw that she moved one.” But Hongjoong didn’t care about his opinion and walked up to you. “Of course, that I would like to go in Los Angeles with you!” you said to Hyunjin happily. “Y/N.” interrupted Hongjoong. That was awkward for you, but you tried to manage it well. “Oh, hi Hongjoong.” “What are you doing?” You raised a brow, “what do you mean? I’m eating like you I think.” “I mean with Hyunjin.” He clarified coldly. The boy stood up in front of your ex in a provocative way. “Guys calm down, please.” You grabbed Hyunjin’s hand. Hongjoong noticed it and repeated, “What are you doing with him Y/N?” You sighed, “Hyunjin is my boyfriend.” The leader blinked, it was too late. He hoped that you were just on a date but it’s more intimate than expected. “So please, leave us alone Hongjoong. We broke up so we can’t tell each other what we can do or not anymore.” “Y/N” called your ex. “Please leave.” You insisted, staring at him seriously. Hongjoong looked at you with a sad expression. Before leaving he gave a dead stare to Hyunjin, “if you do something bad to her, I’ll-“ You cut him straight, “he won’t. Just leave now.” Hongjoong went back to his table but grabbed his jacket and went out of the restaurant.
SEONGHWA ft. Chanyeol (EXO)
Tumblr media
Seonghwa never stopped to regret you, since your breakup. You were non-stop arguing about his schedule. When he could rest and have fun with you, he just practiced alone in the studio. He always declined all of your propositions. That’s why you argued. Of course, being an idol was his priority but why he was always practicing? One day you confronted him, “Seonghwa! I feel like I’m not even important to you. You are always working” you confessed. “Even the boys are taking a break while you are practicing.” He sighed and threw his bag on the couch angrily, “Y/N! I’m an idol can you stop being so selfish?” he rolled his eyes, “I just get back home and you are yelling at me!” “Then I’ll leave you in peace if is that what you want” you threatened him. “Yes! That’s what I want!” he said. The next time he saw you was when you took all of your stuff back to move on in your own apartment. It’s been 1 year now. Seonghwa couldn’t move on. He tried to call you and text you, but it seems that you changed your phone number, or you blocked him. He couldn’t figure it out. The team members proposed him to go at your apartment, but he rejected this idea.
But today, he was walking to you with a dozen of roses, determined to get you back. He didn’t understand why there was so many boxes in front of your entrance door. “Y/N! You should throw few boxes!” said an unknowing voice. Seonghwa noticed that it was a male voice tone. “Never! I need all these boxes in our new apartment Chanyeol!” you answered. Seonghwa hid behind the wall, listening to the conversation. “I swear you will take more than a half space in our wardrobe.” You pouted, “My clothes are tiny next to yours!” He laughed ang hugged you tightly, “finally we can have our own house.” You nodded, “but don’t forget to comeback home after your practices and your promotions!” you said seriously. “Of course, my love” he kissed your forehead. Seonghwa was so confused. 2 minutes ago, he was ready to get you back and now he was hiding and eavesdropping your conversation with your new boyfriend. “I’ll put these boxes in the car, can you bring all my bathroom stuff? It’s heavy” you asked to Chanyeol. “Sure sweetheart.” As you carried the boxes, you noticed the roses laying on the floor. Your favorite. You put your boxes down, and read the card, “From Seonghwa to Y/N.” Your heart raced, was Seonghwa there? You rushed outside but no sign of him. “Is everything okay honey?” asked Chanyeol seeing your frustration. “Yes. I thought I saw an old friend.” You smiled, hiding the flowers behind your back.
YUNHO ft. Changhyun/IM (Monsta X)
Tumblr media
It was a Sunday night, Ateez members were taking a rest day. They enjoyed it, they went to the cinema, restaurant and bowling. Now they went back to the dorm and they all went to their own stuff. Yunho was looking at Atiny’s posts, scrolling about their performance at MAMA 2019. He was laughing and saving screenshots every time the fan joked about Mingi’s abs. When he finally got bored, he was tempted to check your profile. Last time you talked with him was when you inform that you were sending back his grandmother’s necklace. He gifted it to you for your 2nd anniversary. You needed to go in Europe for 6 months, for work. Yunho was okay for a long-distance relationship. It wasn’t a real big deal for him, he was busy with his idol life anyway. But you barely talked for few days, not even texting. The jetlag didn’t help to fix this situation too. When you woke up, he was working. When you got free time, he was sleeping. You could really talk for few hours in weekend, when Yunho was not promoting. One night, he called you to talk about this issue. Even if you both were sad and crying a lot, you decided to stay friend.
That’s why he wasn’t expecting to see your profile status changed from “Single” to “In relationship” so fast. You broke up for 6 months now. He immediately tried to know a bit (even a lot) more about your new boyfriend. The boy noticed that a guy named Changkyun was commenting your pics a lot with nice comments or emojis. He never clicked so fast on a profile. Yunho started to check all of his posts. You were talking a bit with him since you moved to Europe. It seemed that you were just close friends. Until, he saw a pic of you and this Changkhyun. You were on his arms with a shy smile while he hugged you. The caption was “She’s mine”. Yunho saw red instantly. You didn’t cheat on him, but he was mad that another guy was close to you. He inspected his other post, few pics of him, some posts talking about you. Nothing exceptional, just this pic. Yunho decided to send you a direct message. [“Hi Y/N. I need to know. Are you dating this guy? @ChangkhyunMX?”] The 3 dots appeared on the screen. He was so stressed. [“Hi Yunho. Why do you want to know that?”] He took a deep breath, [“I just want to know. Say yes or no…”] You took 2 minutes to reply to his message. [“Yes. He’s my boyfriend”] you typed shyly. Yunho saw your message but he never answered you back. Even if you insisted to know why and how he felt about this, you never saw him on with his main account anymore.
YEOSANG ft. Yugyeom (GOT7)
Tumblr media
Ateez members just cameback from their 4 months world tour. They went to Korea, Europe, Japan and US. They became more and more popular every day. Especially Yeosang, his unique voice and charisma are more praised than before. Sadly, fame have a bad effect on him. He started to be a bit too flirty with everyone, never too far because he was faithful to you. But you didn’t like his behavior. Every time he said that he was doing that for his job only. Flirting back with other idols or fans was really a part of his contract? Absolutely not. For this reason, you broke up with him. Now he could focus on his jobs and you could stop being jealous and hurt to every girl he was talking to. You noticed how he seemed to don’t care when you said that you prefer to stay alone than causing dramas. No expression, no sadness, he didn’t even blink at all. You seriously doubted about your relationship with him. Was he lying all the time? Was he really happy with you? Anyways, now it’s over. The detail you didn’t know about was that Yeosang didn’t want to move on. He asked the members, especially his closest friend Wooyoung, some advices. “You should just tell her the truth. The real reason why you didn’t react when she broke up with you.” Said his friend. “Why I should tell her now? It’s been 6 months Woo.” “It’s never too late” said Wooyoung eating his snack. “Okay… you’re right, I’ll go and tell her tomorrow.” Wooyoung growled, No! Now!” Yeosang sighed but grabbed his coat and headed to your apartment. He forgot how it was close to their dorm.
He knocked at your door, repeating in his head what he could say. “Hello-“ you began as you fixed your hair, “Yeosang? What are you doing here?” “Hello Y/N. I wanted to talk with you.” He scratched his head nervously. “Huh… I think it’s not the right moment“ you said holding your bathrobe. He raised a brow, “what do you mean?” “Babe? Is everything okay?” asked a voice behind you. “Hum, yes Yugyeom, it’s fine.” “Who are you?” asked your boyfriend. “It’s Yeosang” you answered, knowing that Yugyeom was getting jealous. “Oh, the ex-boyfriend.” “Yes whatever… Can I talk with Y/N? In private.” Asked Yeosang annoyed. There was a heavy and awkward tension. Finally, Yugyeom said, “You can talk to me too. She doesn’t hide anything from me.” Yeosang was losing his temper. “I don’t care, I just want to talk with Y/N alone. Can you stop being so possessive?” “Yeo-“ you tried to say. “If you are not happy then leave. She doesn’t need you anymore as you can see.” Said Yugyeom coldly. “Y/N?” Yeosang stared at you. That seemed important but Yugyeom pushed you softly behind him and faced your ex-boyfriend. “Leave now.” “Can you mind your own business?” asked Yeosang. “She’s mine, so it’s my business.” You blushed lightly. You tried to interpose between the 2 boys before it goes too far. “Yeosang you should go. That was a bad idea to come here.” He looked at you sadly but nodded. He gave you a cute smile and headed back to the dorm. “It’s never too late huh, Wooyoung.” Scoffed Yeosang.

Info dump. Sorry for the incoherency, my brain is going really fast.
Muslim Americans and other westernized Muslims (whether they’re muslims that immigrated to western countries or Muslims in their home countries that are dealing with western cultural exploration and neocolonialism) are experiencing unique cultural development right now. A lot of Muslims leave their cultural traditions behind upon immigration / westernization and choose to focus on religion instead, but simultaneously don’t adopt western cultural traditions due to them not fitting into the religious framework, feeling a bit too foreign, etc. One of the most prevalent examples from my life is media: American Muslims want to engage in western media, but a lot of western shows don’t agree with Islamic values and make engagement difficult. This causes a bit of a cultural vacuum where there’s no common cultural language to bind together the millions of westernized Islamic people increasingly out of touch with their homelands and home traditions and seeking new community in their modernized peers. I’ve noticed that this vacuum has began to fill up - via cultural exports such as Turkish period dramas, which westernized Muslims everywhere are watching since it uniquely meets their needs, as well as through other cultural products like the rise of western style modest fashion. A new culture is developing for us that meets our needs, providing us something familiar enough to assimilate into when we leave our old traditions behind yet want to cling to the ways of our religion. Increasingly, our economic potential is being realized - now modest fashion is a billion dollar industry; now Turkish period dramas are raking in insane money, getting hella reboots, and actively improving political relations between Turkey and Pakistan. I’m so enthused to see how our culture will continue to develop and how this first generation of westernized Muslims, having a more “common” culture, will grow up and raise their own kids.
.....
I dont want to comment cause im not muslim nor do I know anything ab being muslim and I dont want to say anything that may be harmful by accident.
but thanks for the info dump!

So I was kinda convinced nothing would happen w. Ryan and I was convincing myself he‘d reached out to the cast & he was taking time to educate himself but now seeing Aisha‘s tweet & Oli liking the tweets ab. the other actor getting fired for racist tweets.. idk man idk. And I feel so weird bc on the one hand it‘s not my place to have any feelings on it but on the other like, I still want Buddie, but I also think we won‘t really get to enjoy S4 w this being unresolved and UGH maybe recasting?
Yeah, maybe it’s something, maybe it’s not. I don’t want to assume anything yet.
What I got from Aisha’s tweets was that the woman asking was just looking for more drama because Aisha answered what she though like, the day it happened so, I don’t know.
And honestly, I think Oliver liked those tweets because fuck that dude and it’s something good that he got fired but I don’t think he would do that to send like some message about what’s going on with Ryan? Or maybe he would, I don’t know what to expect anymore.
And yeah, it’s not my place to accept or not Ryan’s apology but I do hope they work it out in private so that if he does come back for season 4, things aren’t so bad between them. He really needs to understand what he said and educate himself and apologize.
Honestly, I love buddie and I want it to happend but I’d understand if it doesn’t and I’d understand if Oliver is not down with the idea anymore. And I think it’d be better to write Eddie off than recast him because Ryan has a unique way of playing him, whether we like him or not, and it would be just weird.

Lee Soo Hyuk WKOREA September 2019 Interview [ENG translation]
Tumblr media
translation by : justleesoohyuk
WKOREA
W: It’s been a long time. What did you spend your days doing?
LSH: I spent most of my time at home so I rarely went outside. In recent months I have been cast in a new film and ready to shoot. As I went through this period of time, I became more greedy and passionate about acting. I soon wanted to go to (or be in) the movies. I’m lucky to have joined Yoo Ha’s new work. Yoo Ha is famous for showing a new side of actors who are already somewhat familiar with the public.
W: I’m curious about the story behind the casting.
LSH: First of all, let me tell you a sad story. I didn’t know much about myself until the audition (laughs), but I was shocked for a while (about landing the role) since I started out as a model for over 10 years. I thought that as I grow older and work more and more, I will show various faces to the public. I want to be a good actor.
W: The film Pipeline is a story about thieves who steal oil hidden in underground tunnels and dream of turning their lives around. You play a wealthy man who plans to steal tens of billions of dollars?
LSH: This film is based on a true story that happened in Korea. Gunwoo is a person who has personal pain and strives to achieve any purpose. In the drama High School King, I worked with (Seo) In Guk, I’m having fun working with him again after a long time. He (Seo In Guk) was cast first, but he must have said something good about me. I thought (knew) I was able to do it.
W: By the way, I think I saw the white shirt and jeans that you’re wearing today in the first script reading.
LSH: I have about five sets of the same clothes at home. If you like something, buy a lot of it. Now is an age where classic is better than trend.
W: What items would you choose if you could only have three in your closet?
LSH: Jeans, white shirts, is that enough do you think? That’s not enough (laughs)
W: As a model turned actor, you’ve passed the glamorous initial point
LSH: I feel like I’ve become a comfortable and stable person since the moment I was given the spotlight as an actor from being a model. For the past two years I had a mediocre and quiet life. It’s time to look at me. When I debuted at 17 years old and worked hard, I didn’t have enough time to think about myself. In fact, talking about myself in the third person is a bit embarrassing. (laughs) what is lee soo hyuk? It was a time when I was thinking about new things and wondering why, why do you like me sometimes? I wanted to express my gratitude and apologies to my fans at the same time. I want to show you a great growth.
W: In the early days, if you look at your filmography, there were a lot of close to fantasy and unrealistic characters such as The Boy from Ipanema and Gwi from Scholar who walks the Night. Then Choi Gun Wook in Lucky Romance and Kwon Duk-bong in The Man Living in our House were characters who were close to reality that could fit somewhere in a neighborhood. Was there a moment of worry about changing your acting spectrum?
LSH: In those days, I wanted to play an ordinary role, but when I think about it, I think it’s a good image for me. Valid Love began to be popular with people, followed by Lucky Romance and High School King. I’m young but I still feel impatient as an actor. I want to be remembered as an experienced actor to the public through various roles.
W: Do you have a role that you’ve wanted to play?
LSH: I’ve been talking about it for 5 years but I haven’t done it yet. I ask the directors every time (laughs) I want to represent the current state of young people in their 20s and 30s in current times. but im too old to take it right now.
W: I’ve working around the clock all year, but have there ever been points you’ve struggled as an actor?
LSH: I remember the time when I read over the drama Valid love. Han Ji-Seung directed both drama and film. We filmed many conversations with each other It was focused on delicately catching even the slightest trembling of the hands or eyes. [aka the focus was on close up details and responses as opposed to simply acting in mid shots]
W: Are you also eager to change up or overthrow your unique image?
LSH: The door is always open to change. Director Yoo Ha watched my roles closely, such as the drama Local Hero, which I come out as acting comfortably in. It is best to be able to act in many different ways.
W: There seems to be quite a lot of change in your physique compared with your model days.
LSH: When I worked as a model, I was the representing the exhausted thin image. I had no choice, I had to keep my body thin. At that time, it was a plus, and at some point I wanted to broaden my character and gain weight and start exercising. Even if I stay still, my body is not in the same state it was. I think people’s expectations are high, so they work hard. I also like to eat delicious food as per usual (laughs).
W: What kind of man is Soo Hyuk in reality? For example, do you work hard to save? do household chores such as cleaning and laundry, or enjoy meals?
LSH: All you have to do is buy the things you’ve mentioned, saving is going to be a little bit harder (laughs).
W: You like to assemble things like robots, radio controlled cars and plastic model airplanes? It’s surprising to me.
LSH: I like to make something when i’m home alone. I enjoy building Lego. I also liked sculpting when I went to an atelier a while ago. I like things you do with your hands.
W: A close fellow actor said ‘he is smart and seems to have a very high IQ, well organised, and not cooler than expected and very compassionate. I remember everything while pretending not to listen. Not really ordinary and there are many surprises. Has a style and examines like A type but the blood type is AB. I was evaluating Lee Soo Hyuk’.  Is there anything you want to correct/refute?
LSH: what is Young Kwang’s account number? (laughs) I’d like to buy him a meal after a long time. I am grateful, I wont argue.
W: Do you meet (Young Kwang) often?
LSH: I’ve known him since my model days. We meet to exercise and play games. The other day I was forced to play basketball at my Hyung’s place (laughs) He is one year older than me so I just say ‘Hyung’ but we spend time together like friends. He is also in the middle of film shooting but i thank him for helping me in the last two years. He’s a good friend and companion for the rest of my life.
W: You run a private Instagram. I am curious about the 17 photos on it.
LSH: There isn’t much (laughs) I can show you now. I am not good at taking original photographs. I post or delete weather photos, and fashion, news. etc. I’m following my account but its just a quick way to see and study news.
W: I’ve heard that you usually watch movies eagerly as if you are studying.
LSH: I love the site of IMDB. It’s an abbreviation of Internet Movie Database, and all the movies, directors, and actors around the world are clearly organised. When I watch a movie, I tend to look mainly at the director’s filmography, but when someone comes in, I often look for his work. I can talk endlessly about my favorite movies. Nowadays, Netflix seems to have great documentaries and excellent shooting techniques. When watching a movie, you should look at shooting techniques and colors.
W: When I search ‘Lee Soo Hyuk’ on YouTube, the words ‘exciting video’ are automatically suggested. When do you feel the excitement of someone, when is it the best time to do your job well?
LSH: Isn’t it the best time to do your job well? Or you can look at your family and friends. When a man or woman looks the most wonderful, look around and do your job well it seems to be. [this question confused me a bit so if anyone can give a better translation for this question let me know]
W: There are actors who expand through directing or producing like Lee Yun-seok, Moon So-ri, Ha Jung-woo, and Lee Jung-jae. Do you want to challenge the realm beyond acting someday?
LSH: I said I wanted to produce a film not knowing much about it because I was younger (laughs), acting is much more difficult than i thought before when i didn’t know anything (when he was younger). The more you know, the harder it is. The reason is that it is the most fun thing to go to the shoot. I’ve loved movies since my childhood. Even if I don’t necessarily appear so as an actor, getting involved in making good movies is always something I’ve wanted to do and a goal in my life.
