With all these sea creature! MC ideas, I wonder what would the fish mafia do if there were a Betta fish mermaid! MC ; small, cute, strong, and always wins a brawl.
Ohoho! That is a fine idea indeed! This is going to be fun. I’m adding in the original beta to this mix as well ;)
you will be a white opal betta fish. Said fish just under the cut
Tumblr media
Description
You were a beautiful and bright beta. Somewhat small in stature but many avoided your wrath at all costs. From your heat to your tail you were only about 5 feet long. Fairly average for a mer but a bit on the lower side. You’ve never lost a fight, not hesitating to fight with nails, biting or using your surprisingly sturdy fins to ensure you win. Many were always gaining over you and your long beautiful fins. You were quite popular due to this and were even quite wealthy due to your fame under the sea.
when you were offered a way to NRC you were rather excited to explore the surface and shine even brighter in the direct sunlight. Learning to walk was difficult but the fashion and the accessories and makeup on the surface were a whole bother world that you adored! Becoming popular and well known for your beauty quickly. You only stood at about 5’5 but that never bothered you, many taller people were happy to help you. And if any unsavory folk tried anything you had also learned some impressive self defense at the boot camp. These legs can be quite powerful!
Octavinelle
Azul: Honestly tried to get you to sign so many contracts to use show off your beauty to the world! and bring in more customers. Compliments you so much to try and get closer to you. Calls you an angelfish. If you ever sign one of his contracts he refrains from rigging it to much if he recognized you from your fame in the sea, he doesn't want you to get your lawyers or more protective fans... Falls for your charms at some point. gets you rather nice jewelry and outfits over time for different events in the lounge. Envies and also adores you. After his overblot, he understands if you don't want to work with him anymore. His deals are fairer and he even does an event solely around you if you still hang around with him. The tweels tease him a lot for getting a crush on you.
When you reveal your merform Asul is both stunned into silence and his mind is racing with so many ideas. Both to show you off and get profit but also just how much he's down bad for you now. Some selfish part of him wants to keep you and this form all to himself but he knows you wouldn't be happy with that. If you encourage him to join you in his merform he will hide away so fast. It will take months for you to even convince him. Pictures are out of the question, even if his darker body would make yours shine all the brighter, having a yin and yang effect that would be amazing. Give him time and maybe one day he will be ok with it, only for you though.
Jade: Smirked when he saw the immediate tension between you and Vil. Oh, this was going to be so much fun. Egged you two on subtly, spreading a rumor there pinning the blame there, fueling the fire and watching the fight, collecting a few bets here and there. He honestly thought Vil was going to win but you proved yourself to be quite the even match. Would observe how you carried yourself and try to learn a few of your self-defense moves through that. appreciated your beauty and was the one to suggest Azul make an event for just you if you are famous enough to garter that much attention.
When he saw your merform he had a shocked and awed expression. You couldn't help but tease a bit at getting to see Jade leech showing surprise and awe. He would snap out of his trance and return your remark with an equally snarky one. He would join you in the water but keep his distance, he knows how strong you are even if you are much smaller than he is in this form. Probably saw you beat up floyd in mer form and just really was fascinated by how something so small can pack such a punch. Helps maintain your specialized tank and even gets you some mushroom-themed fashion accessories.
Floyd: He laughed when he saw the tension between you and betta fish. Calls you little betta fish. You were much shorter than Vil in that sense. Probably was the one to encourage the actual battle between you and Vil. Likes to chase after you and loves when you show off some of your self-defense moves on him. He does think you're very pretty but also you're super fun when your face is all scrunched up in anger. Tells you to cut loose every once in a while and sometimes will just kidnap you to the lounge for azul or take you out to go eat.
When he saw your merform he started calling you opal betta. or even just little opal. Tried to get close to you and squeeze you in this form but you were even stronger and better at fighting in the water, using your fins to block his vision but moving them just out of biting or grabbing range. It was like some crazy ballet and you ended up winning with a well-timed with to his back, stunning him long enough for you to tie him in a knot. He has hearts in his eyes after that. Asks to swim with you often but remembers how betta fish are very picky and sensitive to the water they can be in, so you get a special tank for yourself thanks to him. don't worry about the other fish that were in there~ Just go have some fun and look very pretty for/with him for a bit ok?
With a special guest!
Vil: You too were nemesis as soon as you made eye contact at the ceremony. It gets so much worse if you were sorted into pomefiore. Luckily you weren't, but it didn't matter, you two butt heads a lot. Somewhat enemies to friends arc over time. You both had petty arguments and were jealous of the other's beauty. Did actually get into a physical fight and you both passed out at the same time so it was a draw. Also, you both fight over Rook and his compliments. you both fish for compliments so much and compare your fame so much. Eventually, your petty fights become more lighthearted teasing, especially after the island of woe incident. Once you two become friends though you are like the hottest power couple in NRC. You both do photo shoots together and mock fanfiction that ships you two together. Many call you two the best young duo models to exist.
When he first saw your merform he had to admit that you were beautiful in an ethereal light. You were the siren beauty of the sea, and he was the alluring human on land. Some photo shoots use this to do some amazing ethereal water-styled photos. Helps you keep up on your scale care and ensures that you have a perfect tank for you to stretch out your fins. He starts to swim more often with you for his exercise. He also does self defense classes with you.

🟨 Appearance Creator Mod Infos Dump
With the release of ACM (Appearance Creator Mod) I wanted to dump some information that might be useful, especially for non-modders that want to play around with it!
(I had no involvement with the making of this mod at all, nor I have any tie with AMM development, just throwing my two cents as a regular user, player and modder)
You'll find some How To, Tutos and other useful heads-up under read more, if you plan on using this mod as a modding tool (sketching up outfits ideas before modding them as custom appearance for your blorbo for example) or simply want to play blorbo dress up!
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
First, You might want to get familiar with these suffix, as you will need to identify what part of a character's outfit you wanna swap
▶ Garments Components Names
h0 - Character's head mesh he - Eyes mesh heb - Eyebrows mesh ht - Teeth mesh hx - Head's details meshes (pimples, makeup...) hh - Hair mesh t0 - Character's Body mesh t1 - Torso Inner Garment (T-shirt, Tank top...) t2 - Torso Outer Garment (Vest, Jacket, Hood...) a0 - Character's Arms mesh (Cyberarms...) l1 - Legs Garment (Pants...) s1 - Feet Garment (Shoes, Socks...) i1 - Accessory / Item Garment (Cyberware, Belt, Necklace...)
▶ Garments Rigs Names
ma - Man Average mb - Man Big mc - Man Child mf - Man Fat mm - Man Massive wa - Woman Average waf - Woman Average Fat
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
⚠ It's important to note that Garments are NOT automatically refited to the character! You can use a WA garment on a Male NPC but it won't magically fit his shape
⚠ Johnny and Kerry, despite using the MA rig, both have a thinner bodies and most of the garment will float and appear larger on them
⚠ A lot of Garments have their own RIGs and physics, and might T-pose / break upon being swapped on your NPC of choice! For this reason, Hair with physics will automatically break as well
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
AMC is a standalone window in game, and not included in AMM main window!
Tumblr media
After spawning a NPC, the AMC window should fill up with the spawned entity's garment components (and yes it can get crowded really quick, especially on smaller monitors and resolution)
Tumblr media
Yes, It also works on NPVs and NPC+! 🔥
Tumblr media
Everything on these windows can be overwhelming especially if you're not familiar with modding, so I'll throw a little example here using Scorpion
First I want to get rid of his hood and vest, without using AMM's custom appearance, using only ACM
In the list, I look for his Vest and his Hood component
Tumblr media
We can easily turn them invisible by clicking the "Toggle" button Make sure to also disable any decals, stickers, and additional component (his vest also has a decal component, see in the screenshot)
Tumblr media
The little icon next to a component's name indicate it has been edited in some way
Tumblr media
I'll now switch his tank top for something else
Click on "Select From List" next to the "Mesh Path" of the desired component (in Scorpion's case, t1_060_ma_tank__corset) Open up the "Torso" list, and you'll be able to click on any of the listed t1 and t2 garments!
⚠ As mentioned above, garments doesn't magically refits on characters; Scorpion use the Man Average body and rig, anything that isn't a "ma" garment won't fit him correctly!
⚠ Another thing to be aware of is that a lot of garments's might break around the collar area! However if you plan on using this same mesh in an outfit, don't let that scare you, as it's easily fixable in blender
Tumblr media
Export your desired mesh and look for the "NeckCollar_JNT" bone and simply rename it to "Neck" (blender will put some numbers next to it but that's fine, ignore that)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm going to switch to Valentin here to showcase how to deal with potential clipping 🤏 Since Valentin's body is customized, bit chubbier, he always needs refiting
Let's say you swapped your character's top for something else but part of his torso clips out
Tumblr media
To put my boys titas away, I'll look for his body component (t0)
Tumblr media
Click on "Chunk Mask" to open the garment's submeshes list
Garment's meshes are broken down in multiple submeshes that can be easily chunkmasked (disabled) at will to deal with clipping! This is why NPC usually don't even have a full body mesh when taking off their clothes, they are chunkmasked to avoid clipping :D
Tumblr media
I will disable the Submesh 1 by unchecking the "1" box
Tumblr media
Don't be afraid to click on multiple box and see what gets chunkmasked on different meshes! You won't break anything 👌
aaand for now that's about all I can think of that might be confusing for users- tho if you have question don't hesitate to ask on this post, to reblog or to come into DMs!

At the Purple Dragons, Genius Built Tech Workshop~ A.K.A The Dragons Den!
The former Purple Dragons are working on their current projects, making some prototypes, programming some new apps, playing Rock, Paper, Scissors on who takes the call for Tech Support. The usual day working under their former Enemy and Current Employer.
Though this changed up when Kendra asked for some more work, and ended up becoming the one to run the official VTurtles! clips channel. Kendra had been pretty annoyed until Donnie presented her with the contract for this new job on top of her current work.
Who was she to turn away having more money added to her paycheck?
The only downside was just going over the streams for good material, which meant she would tend to listen to the VODs while working on other stuff. And making notes on what would be good parts to edit together, and what effects to add.
Jeremy and Jason were at first a bit jealous that Kendra was getting more work, but then realized she would has less free time between projects. The VODs can get pretty long, especially the random insomnia streams.
They had all customized their Mini Turtle Droids to act as helpers, and help them keep track of time mainly. The three are only considered cousins of Shelldon and River, but not as equipped for the extensive AI updates of the originals.
"How mad would Othello be if we set up our own VTuber thing? Pretend to be a VTurtles manager. Like how that one company has a manager also be a VTuber?" Jason asked with some hesitation, not really sure about the idea himself.
"Nah, it would be a lot to do on top of the big projects on schedule." Jeremy answers while he was working with a later prototype of the AR Glasses, "Even if we already have models in the system, Othello hasn't told us what they are for. And if we misused them, well we might get fewer projects sent our way."
Jason paused and quickly turns to Jeremy with a frantic look, "Wait, we already have models?! Like fully rigged and everything?!"
Jeremy just raises an eyebrow, before bringing something up on his computer, "Yeah. Found them pretty shortly after we got moved here. Did you really not check out the files we have access to? Way to lose some Purple Dragons Pride."
On the screen are to open files labeled P.D. Jace, P.D. Jer, and P.D. Ken, all three show 3D models of winged humanoid Purple Themed Dragons of different body types. Each file also has a sub section labeled 'Preset Outfits'.
Before they could continue with a slight freak out, Donnie comes in talking to a camera being carried by Shelldon, with River running around to move anything that might trip him.
"And here are the Top Three Techs in this department. Now don't think you'll get their true identities, I made models to hide that. And I know you want to question why Purple_Wyvern is here. She works for GB, and yes she's paid extra for the Clipper Stuff." Donnie kinda rambles while showing some of the workshop.
Kendra pauses what's she doing to glare at Donnie, but lets her droid join the other two as they go greet their older cousins.
"And greetings you three. Are you having a good time in the Dragons Den?" Donnie leans back, while swiveling his head, to ask the three droids.
The three were a mix of chatter and digital chirps, trading head bonks with River, and Shelldon, then going to almost ram into Donnies head in excitement.
"Calm down, and go back to helping the Dragons. Okay you three we'll do individual interviews later if you want. This is going to be just a prerecorded section I'm going to add to a stream later. Now to head to the next location! Leo is you please?!" Donnie doesn't wait for any of them to answer, and just leaves through a blue portal like he didn't just randomly disrupt them briefly.
"Well that might explain why we have premade models." Jeremy says with a bit of bewilderment. "To hide our identities with the AR filters."
Jason meanwhile was freaking out for a new reason, "Did you hear what he said?! He called us the 'Top Three Techs'!!" He collapsed onto his chair from the rush of what happened in such a short time.
Kendra just scoffed, "Of course we are. The other techs in this company don't get their own workshop. They're in a different warehouse in a different burrough." She gives her droid some pets after it returns to her station, "And I know they don't have personal AI bots to work with, just a couple lone bots that Othello with control remotely to check on things." She starts back up she was working on, "Now back to work, Othello sent word that we get to show off the new tech on the next company broadcast."
The two follow her lead, after closing the files with the models on them, and get back to work. With some effort from Jason because of just the wild 10 minutes of rushed chaos.
Just another exciting day in the Dragons Den.
----------------
Masterpost
Was a bit bored and thought 'I should write some more behind the scenes types posts' for my AU.
The three droids don't really have names yet. I can't figure what the Dragons would name them.

For a variety of reasons, I got into a bit of a rabbit hole about Richard's guitars, and my brain went "oh I know someone who will probably have opinions on this" so essentially, if you feel like it, pretty please talk RZK guitars to me? Favourite? Retired one that needs to come back? (Though I probably already know the answer, that fancy black one?)
Allrighty, buckle up because this is gonna be long. After much consideration I have decided to split it up in two parts because I don’t think I can make it fit into one post that is still vaguely tumblr appropriate, and I really wanted to do it some sort of justice. I still feel like I don’t. But oh well. Full disclaimer, I am NOT a guitarist, but I lived with a few, two of my best friends are pro players and I’m a sponge so I kind of soaked some bits and pieces up over the last 15 years. But in case any lost guitar hero finds this and disagrees with me over the finer points of tone wood: I know honey, I oversimplified, and I am wrong. I tried? 💜 for easier read I formatted everything specific to Richard’s guitars normally and anything general about electric guitars in cursive.
My main sources besides watching about a 100 a month of guitar tube videos (that is youtube for guitarists) with my ex, my main sources will be this interview and this.
Richard Z. Kruspe (of Rammstein and Emigrate)’s Guitars - In Order of Appearance, Part 1/2
Diamant (Les Paul Style)
“I traded the acoustic for a guitar called Diamant, which was like a Les Paul version in East Germany.” - RZK
Now I’m skipping the acoustic he started out with, because it’s basically impossible to know what that was, and go straight into the electric. Now presumably, it would have been something like this, a soviet build Les Paul rip off. The irony is that these still go for several thousands up on reverb today for being historical and collectors pieces. The thing is, that while anything east build might have used cheaper materials, I would assume this thing isn’t worse than any of the beginner/intermediate models sold today, if not better, and kids all over the world do decent stiff with those.
Tumblr media
Something general about electric guitars is that you don’t really so much play the guitar, you play an entire system. The instrument doesn’t make the sound, it only influences it. You play a guitar - but you even more so play the amp. Which makes this a bit tricky, because an e-guitar is a slab of wood and a copper coil, and amps are way more complex. You can make the exact same guitar sound so many ways. Still - there are tendencies. The fact how and why and to which degree the shape and wood of a solid body (a guitar without a hollow wood piece) influences the sound is highly debated and can get a bit esoteric sounding to sane people non-guitarists, but there are some differences in how the general set up and build of the guitar changes things, and tendencies how they are traditionally outfitted. Les Paul style guitars are normally humbucker guitars, Stratocasters and Telecasters normally are outfitted with single coils. Usually a guitarist can switch - between using the bridge, the neck, or both (or more) pick ups and depending on where the pick up is located they pick up different frequencies, different aspects of the sound. Humbuckers produce a richer, deeper or fuller sound than single coils. Very roughly speaking, think the Stones vs. Metallica.
Fender Stratocaster
“Then in East Germany, we had this imagination to get one of the great guitars, to me it was always the Fender Stratocaster because it was the Jimi Hendrix guitar. I didn’t know anything about pickups or humbuckers or whatever. So there was this guy that I met in a café in my old hometown and he was buying all these books because he could get all the books out through customs and he would store them in my apartment. So we became kind of acquainted. He would come over and pick up the books. So one time he came over and I asked him if he could get me a guitar and bring it over. In East Germany, if you exchange money from East to West it would be like 1 East mark and 20 West mark. SO everything I had, I changed it to West Mark and I gave him the money and I gave him the money and asked him to please buy me a Fender Stratocaster. I gave him the money and I didn’t hear anything for like three months, nothing. I wasn’t able to call because we didn’t have phones and stuff like that – it was a different time. So I thought fuck, I gave him 1400 west mark and now he’s gone and never coming back. [...] Then my imagination was so high, I thought the guitar would just play by itself and I wouldn’t really have to do anything, which I found out was bullshit. I was really happy that I had the guitar but it wasn’t really the sound that I had in mind.” - RZK
The first time I heard that story, I literally went “no, no, no, don’t be stupid, don’t give him your money, you won’t even like that guitar, stupid, lost dumbass.” I can not, for the life of me, imagine him play anything other than humbuckers. He apparently does use single coils for some things today again in the studio, but still, it’s so obviously wrong. He did play one again sometime during the late 90s, but I couldn’t find anything on the pick ups he used with that, but can hardly imagine he kept the original, unless he needed it for a specific sound maybe in one or two songs. I get it though. For many, many people the Fender Stratocaster is THE guitar. Jimi Hendrix is the main reason for that, but it’s also the countless idols that picked it up after him for the same reason, people who ended up plastered on the walls of angsty teenagers in their own right. This totally has to do with the whole amp thing aswell. You see your idol play that type of guitar ... but it’s not even half of the sound, and it won’t sound the same. Maybe probably they changed the pick ups, they have an effect rig, the spend hours fiddling with the knobs on an amp you can never afford. It’s never the same. Which is why ...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fender Telecaster Black Gold
Then I had a guitar that I was very fond of. It was an older black and gold telecaster – there weren’t very many of them made at that point. I put a Seymour Duncan Jeff Beck SH-4 in there, like a humbucker. I remember it was like my beauty guitar and I needed someone to put that pickup in and I was with Paul and he had more experience with that stuff than me so he would get out a hammer and a chisel and he start banging away on it and I was like ‘Fuck! Fuck! Don’t do that!’ but we put the thing in there and it was one of my favorite guitars” - RZK
Tumblr media
... this one first didn’t really make sense for me for him. It’s even more a classic single coil guitar than the Strat is, and it only really started making sense for me when I learned he Paul indeed put a Humbucker in there. It’s a stunningly beautiful guitar, and weirdly non-modern for him. I don’t know why and this is completely instinctual on my part, but I find it fitting he played it during that time after the wall came down, which seems to have been a rough time for him generally, it seems like a somehow super emotional guitar, this relic. Telecasters were some of the first electrics ever build, it’s such a pioneer, but it’s also one that alot of punk bands used, possibly because they were old and cheap in the 70s and noisy and people customized it and put other pick ups in. The whole putting a chisel to it and adding a humbucker into it is such a “I’m gonna make whatever I have fit for me, and I’ll love it” move. If you look at it, a double coil pick up is really something you have to force to go in there, you really have to break it open. There is also this:
“... and then I think I had to sell it because I needed drugs or something. I was really sad that I sold it because I was at a very low point in my life.” - RZK
Tumblr media
If I would get the chance to do one thing only for him to thank him for his music, I would go back in time to that Richard who is just sad about selling that guitar and hug him, and tell him he doesn’t need to worry, because they will name guitars after him in the future. It breaks my heart so fucking much. But of course, it’s what opens the doors to what happens next, which is ...
ESP 901
Tumblr media
“That led me to my very first convention in Frankfurt. With guitars, it is like with women, you have to fall in love. Sometimes you get a guitar and you fall in love later but there has to be some sort of connection with it. So I was walking around that convention and I saw that guitar hanging at the ESP stand. It was a 901 ESP Sunburst and I was looking at it because it was such a beauty. And I was walking around for hours – they probably thought I was some weird guy who wants to steal the guitar. I bought that guitar and that’s how I got connected with ESP.” -RZK
He might have fallen for it because it is pretty, but it did come with a ESP double humbucker set up, with an added condensator to muffle up the sound, although not yet an active one (more on that later). It was a 90s metal guitar, one of those things marketed to the Metallica generation, something loud and heavy and full. Also, and this is where I will put in another general insert, there is something else about the choice of electric guitars that we haven’t talked about yet.
Now, I’ve discussed that you can push or pull the sound of a electric quite far in one or the other direction with what pick ups you use, what effects, what amps. But what this ignores is that especially standing up a guitar is a really shitty asymmetrical piece of equipment. And what that does to your body is that it needs to fit you, your hands, and your playing style. Some people prefer it chunky, others like sender. Guitarists, especially the 80s shredders, like to talk about a “fast neck”, which is another one of those things that get slightly esoteric, but which usually means a slimmer neck and slightly bigger frets, that need less way for your fingers to press until the string gets stopped. Someone who plays very bendy blues might dislike that and prefer something to dig in their fingers more down to the fretboard to get more control over how they bend the string. There are different neck profiles, there are different neck lengths, and all of it contributes to how comfortable someone might find their guitar.
I am mentioning this, because until today, Richard’s guitars are build very similarly to that ESP 901. His Eclipse Model is a tad different (again, more on that later), but the one he uses the most, the RZK I, has the same neck scale, similar frets, and that comfortable ESP slender neck. Even the shape seems to be inspired by turning it upside down. He has said in interviews that he hasn’t got very strong hands, and it makes perfect sense to me. I bought my own electric (again, more on that later) purely because I wanted to own one and not even so much because I ever had any real ambitions of learning to play it, but my friends at the time (10 years ago now) forced me to try out alot (!) of models (despite me knowing what I wanted), and the only guitars that I tried that had slimmer necks were Ibanez guitars, which in turn were wider. Ironically Frankfurt is my hometown, so the place to try a lot of different models is That exact convention Richard went to, and I haven’t skipped a Musikmesse in the last 15 years. I was at atleast one were Richard was too (I just didn’t care at the time, yikes), and it somehow greatly pleases me he found “his” guitar at that particular convention. Things have changed in recent years, but electric guitars always were in Hall 4.01, with ESP being left of center in the middle, and I don’t know, I can just see him walking in circles around it, and it makes me so emotional for him because it’s what musicians do at that place. It’s really loud, everyone is playing, there is someone better noodling around at every corner, and it can be quite an intimidating setting I think. And every year you see that one kid coming back and back again to that same stand, staring at that one guitar until they finally work up the nerve and ask to try it (or the staff takes pity on them and offer). And it’s the same everytime, they think “oh god they must think I am crazy” but really, nobody does. Everyone in that hall who owns a heart knows what those dreams are made of, and all it maybe does inspire is a “oh god, I hope that one makes it”. I digress. I think it’s more common now to look for different neck styles and companies started caring about it, but especially coming from Fender and Gibson guitars, that neck is honestly just very, very nice for weaker hands.
This is where I will stop, because it makes a good moment for a break and this post is honestly getting too out of hand otherwise. There will be a part 2 - where Richard starts using active pick ups, starts playing my favorite guitar in the whole wide world (and stops playing it), and finally, set up his own signature.
This is him with that 901 though: when he must have had it pretty much brandnew, while he used it, and right before he sold it.

“Discordant Sonata”- Ch. 15
Have some quarantine reading material!!
>>Read it here on Ao3<< >>Read it here on Wattpad<<
CHAPTER 15: BRAVURA
Music glossary:       Bravura - (from Italian “bravery/spirit”) Style of music in which the performer plays boldly, requiring exceptional agility and technical skill in execution.
(Mood music: “For the Love of a Princess” - James Horner )
Sunday Evening
Marinette knocked on the guest bedroom door, or rather, on Chat Noir’s bedroom door, as it had now officially become.
“Come in! It’s open,” she heard from the other side.
Marinette’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
Odd, she thought. For someone who was supposed to be guarding a secret identity at all costs, one would think that Chat would always keep the door locked. First the “bathroom incident” and now this? She wondered what his aversion to locked doors was all about.
Marinette peeked her head into the room and saw him at his desk, writing in a notebook.
“Hey Kitt–uhh, Chat Noir, dinner will be ready in a minute. Would you care to join us?”
Chat’s cat ears perked up. “I’d love to! Thanks! I’ll help set the table in a sec.”
“What are you up to?” she asked, sitting at the edge of his bed.
Chat swiveled his chair around to face her. “Oh, it’s...” he grimaced, rubbing the back of his neck to ease the stiffness there. “I was doing some calculations, figuring out a monthly budget and that kind of thing. Trying to figure out how much all my bills will cost.”
“Me-owch,” Marinette cringed. “Sounds suuuuper fun.”
“Yeah, definitely,” he replied with matching sarcasm. “It’s actually been more complicated than I thought.”
“How so?” she asked.
He let out a long sigh. “Well… this is gonna sound weird, but my father as a civilian is, uh… pretty well-known. There’s a lot of people who would recognize me. Any potential employers would be getting in contact with him, asking him questions, or even give him an idea of where to find me. So I can’t apply to jobs as my normal self.” He ran his gloved hand through his hair in exasperation. “But where could I possibly get a job as ‘Chat Noir’?? ‘He’ can’t start a bank account, has no birth certificate, driver’s license, address, phone number. I’d have to get hired under the table, but I might run into some shady people. They might take advantage of the situation, and there’d be nothing I could do to contest them. Or they might try to use me to get free advertisement, and then my father would know where to find me anyway. Ugh, it’s all just a mess,” he groaned. “Anyway, thanks for letting me vent. I’m sure I’ll figure something out, so don’t worry.”
Marinette hummed, thinking. “Well, actually…” she said, tapping her chin. “Since the school year’s starting up again, a couple of our full-timers are switching to part-time to accommodate their university schedules; so the bakery will need some extra help. Obviously you wouldn’t be able to work at the front of the store, attending to customers and whatnot. But there’s still cleaning, washing, and heavy lifting that needs to be done behind the scenes. So if that sounds alright with you, we can talk to my parents about it. I’m sure they’d be happy to have you aboard.”
“Really??” Chat’s head shot up and he chirped excitedly, accidentally dropping his pen in the process. “Th-that would be great! I’ll work really hard, promise! Are you sure it would be okay?”
“Don’t worry, I’m sure they’ll say yes! My mom’s already taken quite a liking to you; she’s always talking about how polite and sweet you are.” Chat’s ears perked up and his cheeks reddened upon hearing this, which she found much too adorable. “And I’m sure my dad’s slowly coming around; I can tell, even though he’s stubborn.” She reached over and squeezed his hands. “I’ll put in a good word for you,” she said with a wink.
“You will?!” he replied with a laugh. “Best job reference ever!!” He hopped out of his chair, then bent over and wrapped her up into a tight hug. “You’re the best, Marinette. Seriously.”
She shook off her initial surprise and squeezed back, smiling wide.
“Anything for a friend.”
Dinnertime went over even better than Marinette had hoped. When the subject of a job was broached, Marinette’s mother took to the idea immediately and, citing the need for some extra muscle, eventually managed to win over her father.
Thus, they hired Chat Noir on the spot for part-time work, adding a few extra household chores in lieu of charging him rent. Marinette could hardly contain herself when she saw Chat’s face as he heard that; he looked like he’d won the lottery. And if anyone else had noticed how his eyes got misty and his voice began to quiver as he thanked them, nobody had mentioned it.
After dinner, Marinette invited Chat Noir upstairs to her bedroom, saying she needed help picking out the perfect outfit for her first day back to school. Truth be told, she really did need to choose an outfit; but it was mostly an excuse to hang out with him and serve as a distraction from his stressful circumstances.
Behind his cheerful smile and never ending stream of jokes, he always carried such a lonesome air about him. She’d never noticed it until that first night; the night they danced during the ballroom akuma attack. Or rather, she’d never allowed herself to open up to the possibility that he might be suffering. It would have made fighting him much more difficult had she known.
But as they swayed to the music that night, she could feel the melancholy in his voice, how it seemed to be yearning for more, and she couldn’t ignore it anymore.
It was shocking to her; mind-blowing, even. Not the same shock as one might get from a slap in the face, but rather like she’d woken up from a deep sleep. And yet, even then, she never could have anticipated how things would’ve unraveled from that day forward. They had come a long way, and there was still much more ahead of them.
In any case, he was sure to appreciate an evening goofing around with his new roommate, to get his mind off of both his superhero problems and his civilian worries.
“So, what do you think?” she asked as she peered into her closet. “Classy? Trendy? Girly? Vintage? Boho chic?”
Chat furrowed his brows, cocking his head in uncertainty. “I dunno… You’d look great in anything! Just close your eyes and grab something, and voila!”
She wrinkled her nose at him. “What if I grab my fuzzy, pink bathrobe?”
“You’d look great in that too! ‘Comfy chic’, the newest trend on all the cat- walks!” he grinned cheekily.
She rolled her eyes. “Oh come on, you dork, be serious! I wanna look good!”
“But you already look good!” he said, lifting his arms and motioning up and down her entire length for emphasis. “You’d even look good in a burlap sack. I mean it! You’re really cute, Marinette! Besides, it’s not like you need to impress anybody. Everyone already loves you.”
She felt her cheeks warm up at the praise he gave so freely. “I-I… th-that’s sweet of you to say. B-but I wasn’t trying to fish for compliments or anything. I just… want to look a little extra nice. Maybe even stand out a little bit, that’s all,” she added more quietly, fiddling with the hem of her shirt.
Chat paused and forward on the chaise. “Hang on,” he said, narrowing his eyes at her. “Marinette... ARE you trying to impress someone? Someone special, maybe?”
Marinette made a startled noise that would best be described as a squawk and whipped back around to face the inside of her closet. “Uhh, NOPE! Nope, nope. Not at all! What makes you say that?!”
Wow, Marinette, very convincing, she groaned inwardly.
Despite her stammering and weak attempts at protesting, Chat exclaimed with a gasp, “So there IS someone!”
He hopped off the chaise towards her, trying to get a peek at her reddened face. “So who is it?? Would I know them? Are you in the same grade, or just the same school? Do they already know you like them? How did you two meet?”
Marinette let out a long screech, rushing away from the closet towards her vanity desk and plopped down on the chair, dropping her head onto the table with a small thunk.
Chat practically glided across to where she’d sat and put his hands on her shoulders, squeezing gently. “Our little Marinette has a crush on someone~!” he crooned in a sing-song voice. “That’s so romantic! You’ll invite me to your wedding, won’t you?”
Marinette let out another long, muffled groan, which only spurred him on, becoming giddy like a small child who’d been given a pile of candy.
He’s never going to stop now that he knows, is he? she bemoaned, cursing her inept, awkward self.
Foregoing any further attempts at denial, she decided to just be honest with him. After all, Alya knew about her crush, and so did her other gal friends. She could confide in Chat too; especially since they were going to be living with each other from now on. Surely there was no harm in him knowing. It’s not like he’d go around blabbing it to anyone. She knew him better than that.
She sighed heavily, not bothering to hoist up her head, which felt like it weighed as much as a boulder at the moment. “He’s a classmate,” she replied in deadpan.
“A classmate, huh?” Chat repeated, voice full of wonder. “That’s so adorable! What else can you tell me about him? Is he cute?”
“Gorgeous,” she replied, with perhaps more emphasis than she intended. “And thoughtful and gentle and kind. A little awkward and nerdy, but friendly and optimistic to a fault. He’s practically perfect. At least, perfect in all the ways that matter to me, anyhow. I’ve known him for a few years, and I’ve been in lov– I MEAN… I’ve had a crush on him pretty much since we first met.”
Sensing her shift in tone, Chat dropped all the playfulness in his voice and asked in earnest, “W-wait… D-did you say… in love?”
Marinette let out a long, pitiful whine, grabbing the hair by the sides of her head and covering her face with it like a tent, trying to hide her eternal shame.
“I can’t believe I just said that…” she moaned wretchedly, very much wishing she could shrink to the size of a mouse right now. “Can you just cataclysm me and pretend you didn’t hear that, please?”
“Wait, so that means…” Chat interrupted, his brows scrunched. “He doesn’t know how you feel about him?”
She shook her head, or rather, kind of shuffled it back and forth on the table’s surface. “I’ve always been too afraid to say anything to him. I never wanted things to become weird between us, so I’ve always just… not taken the risk. He always just kinda… seemed to need a friend more than he needed a relationship, y’know? And I didn’t want to take that away from him. From us.”
Chat paused for a moment, pondering her words. “But what if he feels the same way?” he countered. “Wouldn’t you rather get it off your chest and find out for sure?”
Marinette hesitated, turning her head sideways. “Have you ever liked someone you were too afraid to lose?” she replied quietly.
She could hear Chat’s breath hitch, but he didn’t respond. She wondered if that was something he’d been worrying about as well. He’d never confessed to Ladybug about his own crush; but was that merely due to shyness, or from not wanting to complicate their relationship and their duties as superheroes? Would he jeopardize it?
Chat was a romantic at heart; of that she was certain, judging from his taste in media and books, from their late night conversations, and especially from what Plagg had told her a few days ago.
However, despite his playful flirtatiousness towards her as Ladybug, he’d never verbally expressed any serious interest in a romantic relationship. She could only assume he wanted to keep things as friendly and professional as possible, in order to work on strengthening their relationship as a team, instead of risking a fallout.
Or, at least, that’s what she’d started to tell herself. Everything in her brain was a terrible jumble. Especially after hearing about Chat’s family situation the night before, after the akuma attack. Ladybug had finally learned about Chat’s mother, Hawkmoth’s wife, and things were way more complicated than she could have ever imagined.
Chat Noir had introduced a variable of unpredictability in her life, and she was still trying to sort out her own growing feelings towards him. Were these merely feelings of protectiveness, or was it something else? Had she been projecting her desire for Adrien onto Chat? She didn’t think so, and yet, she’d never experienced anything like this before. How could she know for sure?
Unrequited love felt awful, but at least it was fairly straightforward. Trying to figure out her thoughts and feelings when adding another person into the jumble was frustratingly confusing.
In addition, Hawkmoth’s cruel words from the akuma attack echoed in her head despite trying to dispel them countless times. They resonated within her, trying to worm their way into her brain to plant undeserving guilt and shame. Accusations of taking advantage of Chat; of blind infatuation; of festering doubts and lack of trust.
Not to mention the elephant in the room: the giant, seemingly impenetrable wall of having to hide their identities from each other, which prevented them from being able to grow closer.
Pursuing a romantic path with him right now would not be prudent.
Especially since she was still in love with Adrien.
UGH. She was in love with Adrien. Why had she allowed herself to fall for him?!? Why did he have to be so darn wonderful, so awfully talented, so ridiculously considerate?!
The uncomfortable feeling of embarrassment slithered down her spine once again, traveling all the way from her head to her toes. How could she possibly face Chat Noir now that he knew what a coward she was?
Moments passed and neither of them had broken the ice. She supposed she should be the one to do it, since she was the one that had made things awkward in the first place.
Before she could say anything, however, she felt Chat’s hands settle on her shoulders, and he gently pulled her up into a sitting position. He gazed at her reflection in the mirror, a kind smile painted on his handsome face that she couldn’t help but feel her face flush. His emerald green eyes were so piercing, so sincere, which caused a multitude of butterflies to swarm in her chest despite her having banned them.
Bringing his arms in front of her, he draped a colorful garment across her collarbones so it would cascade all the way down to her lap. Apparently she’d been too busy internally freaking out that she hadn’t even heard him rummaging around in her closet.
“How about this top?” he asked softly. “The cut of the neck will draw attention to your jawline, especially if you wear your hair down, so the sides can frame your facial features. And if you wear this necklace here-” he said as he lifted the accessory from her vanity table, “-it will emphasize your blue eyes very nicely. For bottoms, I’d either go with some dark-wash skinny jeans paired with low heels, or a skirt with a bright pattern and some close-toed flats. Keeping it simple is best, in my opinion. Clean and sophisticated.”
Wait… what?? How did he–
Marinette hadn’t even noticed her jaw had dropped until Chat closed it gently with his index finger, her teeth coming back together with a soft clink.
“You should ask him out. This mystery person,” he added. “You never know what’ll happen. He’ll either like you back, or he won’t. But at least you’ll know, and whatever happens afterwards, it’ll mean you can move on.”
She held the shirt in place with her own hands, but never broke eye contact with him through the mirror. “Would you do the same?” she asked quietly.
Chat looked away, cheeks darkening. He rubbed the back of his neck and sighed deeply. “Someday, perhaps. But… I’m not ready yet. Maybe once I become a better person. Somebody worthwhile.”
She turned around to face him, studying his expression. A weight settled uncomfortably in her gut, urging her to fix it, FIX IT!!
But fix what?! Fix it how?? She didn’t know; but she had to try regardless.
She stood up, setting the garment down on the chair, then practically stomped over to him. Chat looked a bit taken aback at how close she’d gotten, his eyes widening in confusion. She threw her arms around his torso, pulling him as close as physically possible without literally merging together. She laid her head on his chest, relishing the sound of his heart thumping in his chest.
“You dumdum. You’re already amazing. Anybody would consider themselves lucky to be loved by you.”
She felt him freeze up, unsure of what to make of this sudden and almost aggressive display of affection. But a beat later he relaxed, practically melting into her embrace and hugged back just as tightly.
He laid his own head on top of hers, a motion that still felt so comforting and so familiar; and yet she couldn’t figure it out. Whenever she would come close to making a discovery, the thought would slip away, as if by magic.
Or, come to think of it, most likely because of magic. His mannerisms and speech were so familiar, and yet she couldn’t place where she knew them from, or whom they matched up with. Chat had said that they knew each other outside of the costume, so surely that was why they felt so familiar. But the glamour of his miraculous was quite efficient in protecting his identity; therefore, despite teetering at the edge of her recognition, she still could not identify him. She supposed that was for the best, even if it was maddening.
“I wish I could believe that. I really do,” he murmured sadly, interrupting her train of thought.
She nuzzled her head into him. “Stop being so hard on yourself. Life doesn’t revolve around achievements or some arbitrary measurement of greatness. Being you is enough.”
“I... don’t really know how to stop thinking that way, to be honest,” he said with a shrug.
Marinette let go of him and took a small step back, eyes sparkling with mischief. “Well, it’s too bad you don’t have a choice, then. ‘Cause from now on, you’re officially enrolled in the Dupain-Cheng self-esteem boot camp, where you learn to be nice to yourself… or else, I’ll kick your ass!” she said, poking him lightly on the chest.
His eyes popped open for a moment, then he threw his head back and laughed. “I believe it!” he said, squeezing his arms around her once again. “I’ll do my best to meet your expectations and avoid all the ass-kicking, sensei! Bring on Du PAIN!”
She let out a snort and giggled, looking up at him from her lower height.
Her gaze softened once again, then added, “By the way... thanks for your help, and for your advice, Minou.”
Chat chuckled at the term of endearment, and Marinette’s brain froze.
How could she forget?? Again. She wasn’t Ladybug right now. Marinette didn’t have nicknames for Chat.
Before she could backpedal, Chat leaned down to kiss her forehead, then replied, “Anytime, Mari.”
She relaxed again and gave him one last squeeze, unable to contain a giant, satisfied grin.
She released him so she could return to the task of getting ready for school tomorrow. She asked, “Will it really be okay for you to go to school? Won’t it be risky, since your father will know where you are?”
Chat let out a thoughtful hum. “He’s a pretty powerful person, but even he can’t walk into the school and drag me out of there in front of everyone. I should be okay, as long as I’m always around other people.”
“Well… if you say so,” she said, crinkling her eyebrows. “You’ve got my cell phone number, so call me if anything ever pops up and I’ll be there in a jiffy, no matter where you are.”
Chat smiled at her fondly. “Thank you.”
She smiled back. “Come on. Let’s go watch a movie downstairs. It’s our last day to be certified couch potatoes and I’m not gonna pass it up.”
Chat winked. “Aye aye, Captain Spud! Lead the way!”

Monday Morning
Chat Noir landed on the roof of the school without a sound, eyes darting around the perimeter to verify that no one was present at this hour. Upon seeing that the coast was clear, he slinked towards the door that led inside the building.
He tried the doorknob. Locked, as expected. He detransformed, and without a word, Plagg phased through the door. It clicked, then Adrien slipped inside.
Heart thumping, he shifted his backpack and continued down the rooftop stairwell until he reached a hallway. It was empty, although that didn’t do much for his nerves. Getting caught on campus before the school opened would mean getting asked questions he would rather not have to answer.
Adrien wasn’t a rule-breaker. He was courteous, mild-mannered, and above all, obedient. He did things by the book. Or, at least... he did as Adrien . Chat Noir was another story altogether.
Trying to shake off his jitters, Adrien took a deep breath and tried to summon the playful part of him that enjoyed more mischievous types of activities.
There wasn’t much for him to do for the next couple of hours but to wait until people slowly trickled into the school. He decided to occupy himself by organizing his locker, so he stepped out into the common area from the dark hallway and carefully crept to the locker rooms downstairs.
As it turned out, it was a good thing he checked it before anyone was around, for the loud gasp he let out as he discovered its contents would have surely attracted the attention of the entire room.
Inside the locker was a duffel bag full of belongings– his belongings: his passport and birth certificate, his wallet, some clothes, his favorite blue scarf, a photograph of his mother; school supplies and stationary, a brand new laptop, and an indistinct burner phone.
There was no written note, no card, no name left behind. The only identifier provided was a picture of an black and red butterfly on it.
A butterfly? Surely this couldn’t be a gift from Gabriel Agreste. He’d never be this thoughtful, not in a million years.
He studied the picture, flipping it over for more clues, and found some small text on the back.
“Scarlet Peacock Butterfly”, the caption said. “A vivid red and black butterfly that ostensibly poses as another toxic species in order to deceive predators.”
Adrien gasped.
A fake.
Could it be…?
Adrien’s fingers trembled as he picked up the phone. It was an older model flip phone. He opened it.
It had a single phone number saved in its contacts.
He selected the number, fingertip hovering over the “call” button. With a shaky breath, he pressed it. And waited.
A few agonizingly long seconds passed. Then the ringing stopped; someone had picked up.
Adrien’s breath hitched and he gulped. He couldn’t help the crack in his voice as he whispered hesitantly into the phone.
“...Nathalie?”

For once, Marinette Dupain-Cheng managed to make it to school on time, having set her alarm for an earlier time just to make sure. Tardiness always seemed to be her calling card, but she was determined to not let this happen today; not after all her preparations from the night before.
And so she walked into her first class, happy to see a room full of (mostly) friendly faces. Alya smiled at her from her desk across the room, waving her over enthusiastically. Marinette returned the smile and headed towards her.
She gave a wide berth to Lila and their teacher, who stood by the door. The new teacher listened, enraptured, about the stylish Italian girl’s most recent trip to the Malagasy islands and how she single-handedly founded a lemur rescue organization. Marinette fought the urge to roll her eyes and quietly passed them by, without challenging the validity of her claims.
Not today, she told herself. Not on the first day of school.
On her way towards her best friend, Marinette also walked past Chloe Bourgeois, her former bully. They made eye contact and gave each other a brief nod.
“Chloe,” Marinette greeted her plainly.
“Dupain-Cheng,” Chloe acknowledged in return, then turned her full attention back to her phone, vigorously texting someone with a dragon profile picture.
Marinette couldn’t quite call Chloe her friend, though they were definitely more than just acquaintances. They’d come to a sort of unspoken truce a couple of years back. They’d both done some growing up these past few years, and for that, Marinette was grateful. Especially since this arrangement made it possible for them to remain mutual friends with Adrien.
Marinette went up the steps to where her best friend sat, and they greeted each other with a hug.
“Hey, Alya! No Nino?”
“Nah, looks like we only have three classes together this year, bummer.” Alya shrugged. “But that means I get to sit next to my Mari-bean!”
Marinette noticed a markedly cheery-looking Adrien entering the classroom, only to be stopped by Lila at the door, who flipped her hair theatrically and batted her exaggeratedly long (and most likely false, hmmph!) eyelashes at him.
She decided to ignore it and turned around to fully face her wavy-haired friend. “So, how was your weekend? Did you and your aforementioned husbando do anything fun?” she asked with a knowing smile.
Alya’s cheeks darkened, but she tried to cover up her blushing by pretending to adjust her hair. “Well, we did get ahold of the new Super Pinguino III. You’ll have to play it sometime and try to beat our high score.”
Marinette giggled. “I dunno, that might be the one game where I’ll never be able to beat you.”
“Well, we’ll just have to see about that,” she gave her a wide smile in return. She exclaimed (rather loudly even by her standards), “By the way, Marinette! Your outfit looks AMAZING! Don’t you think so too, Adrien?”
Marinette’s eyes widened and she whipped around to realize Adrien was headed their way. Her face felt like she was sticking it inside a furnace, and suddenly she felt quite naked, wanting nothing more than to hide in a dark corner somewhere rather than display the outfit she’d meticulously chosen the night before. What if it was too much? What if she was overdressed? What if everyone could tell she was trying too hard? What if it was way too last-season and not avant-garde enough? Or what if it was too avant-garde and she should have dressed more conservatively?! What if–
Adrien’s eyes met hers and he gave her the brightest, broadest, most radiant smile, so stunning it should be illegal, so resplendent that it caused her brain to suddenly fizzle.
“Absolutely! You look beautiful, Marinette,” he said, his voice so earnest and sincere that Marinette felt she might combust on the spot.
Marinette wasn’t sure how long she’d been standing there, mouth agape, feeling like her feet were no longer touching the ground, when Alya nudged her with her elbow, coaxing her to reply.
And reply she did. Or at least, she tried; for only for a brief noise somewhere between a croak and a squeak managed to emerge from her throat.
“Uhh, I think Marinette means ‘Thank you,” Alya replied helpfully.
Marinette nodded enthusiastically. “Y-YES!! That’s right!! Th-thank you, Adrien!” she stammered, forcing the air out of her lungs.
Adrien beamed at her. “It’s great to see you guys again. I’m really glad we have our first class together this year. It’ll be a great way to start off the day.”
He waved goodbye to them, then walked to sit at the empty seat next to Chloe, who greeted him with a loud, happy squeal and friendly cheek kisses, then proceeded to talk rapidly about a subject way too complex for Marinette’s current brain-dead state of gleeful stupefaction.
And most definitely too dumbstruck to notice the daggers Lila was glaring at her from across the room.
(Mood Music: “Closer Than Sisters” - Abel Korzeniowski )
Marinette’s mind managed to rejoin her body sometime around halfway through their first period, and the remainder of her classes went by without a hitch. There was a lot of chatter and gossiping about Ladybug and Chat Noir, and whether they were actually working together or if it was some sort of elaborate publicity stunt. Conspiracy theories abounded, but for the most part it was merely curious conjecture. Ladybug had always worked alone, so what would this mean for the city? Would she finally defeat Hawkmoth now that she was no longer outnumbered?
Alya, of course, was utterly buzzing with excitement about these recent developments. Marinette wasn’t quite sure she’d be able to stand all her wild speculations and hypothetical questions; so it was both a shame and a relief that they only had two classes together this school year.
Despite the mental toll that hearing all these conjectures took on her, Marinette was still in high spirits by her last class of the day.
Or so she’d thought, until her absolute favorite classmate made her way over to her desk, giving her a sickly saccharine smile that would put high fructose corn syrup to shame.
“Hi, Marinette,” she lilted in a hollow sing-song voice.
Marinette brought out her phone and pretended to look busy. “Hello, Lila.”
“Did you have a nice summer?” Lila asked.
As if you care, she thought. “It was peachy,” Marinette replied curtly.
Lila pouted. “You don’t sound too happy. I don’t suppose you’ve already heard?”
Marinette sighed. Might as well play along. “Heard what, Lila?”
Lila leaned into her personal space, which made unpleasant goosebumps rise on the back of Marinette’s neck. “Well, I don't suppose you and Adrien are close enough friends that he’s told you all about his secret girlfriend, right?” she said more quietly.
Marinette’s brain screeched to a halt, but she forced herself to keep typing into her phone. “And I suppose he's told you?”
Lila giggled coyly. “Oh, well, I’m not one to blab secrets around, but the poor dear’s just not very good at hiding those hickeys. A scarf and concealer can only do so much, you know.”
Marinette felt sick to her stomach, but she refused to indulge Lila into thinking that she actually believed her.
“Go away, Lila,” she hissed through gritted teeth.
“Don’t believe me? I can prove it-” she replied, with that false cheerfulness that always carried a secret smugness to it. “-as soon as he walks through the door. He’s told me his schedule, you know… We really are very good friends, he and I.” She lifted her head to look around. “Ah, there he is.”
Adrien walked into the classroom with Kim, joking and laughing together.
Lila waved them over, and Adrien smiled as they both walked towards them.
“Adrien, I was just talking to Marinette about our plans for the school year. What does your modeling schedule look like?” she asked, as she thumbed the fabric of his scarf. “This is the year before we graduate. Is your father going to ease up on the photo shoots? I do so remember how very busy you were last year,” she lamented with another fake pout.
Adrien replied, his voice harboring a tinge of nervousness as she ran her hands up and down the length of his scarf, “Uh, actually, I won’t be- uh, modeling. This year. To… prepare for university exams and whatnot.”
“No modeling gigs, you say? That’s awfully kind of him,” she replied sweetly, as she slowly pulled back and forth on the two sides of the scarf like a seesaw. “Letting you focus on your studies and whatnot.”
Before he could reply, Lila tripped sideways with a dainty yelp, yanking the scarf along with her, and she fell towards him. Adrien caught her and she wrapped her arms around his neck securely, the scarf falling onto the ground, forgotten by all.
All except for Marinette, of course.
“Lila, are you alright?” Kim cried, and Adrien weakly echoed the question.
“Oh… clumsy me… I’m still getting used to these new shoes. I haven’t quite broken them in yet, you see,” she remarked as he helped her up. “I mostly wore combat boots over the summer while helping build schools in Bali for impoverished children, so I guess you could say I’ve gotten out of the habit of wearing heels.”
Marinette got out of her seat to retrieve the fallen blue scarf. The scarf that she had made for him almost four years ago for his birthday. Lila’s tugging had rubbed the fabric against Adrien’s neck, and the center was stained with make-up the same tone as his skin. She gulped heavily, then looked up at him.
And there they were, peppered all over his neck: various small bruises below the sides of his jawline, barely noticeable, but still visible if you looked closely.
“Umm, here,” Marinette said numbly as she handed him back the scarf. His hesitant eyes met hers, and he looked guilty, as if all his secrets had been laid bare for her to see.
“Thank you,” he said, almost too soft for her to hear.
“Why, Adrien!” Lila said, feigning secrecy but still speaking louder than she should have been, had that been the case. “I know you said you didn’t have to model anymore, but you really ought to tell your girlfriend to take it easy when you guys make out.”
Adrien sounded genuinely puzzled. “Wait… Girlfriend? What are you talking about?”
Kim’s features scrunched up in confusion. His eyes traveled towards where Lila was looking, then his face lit up with excitement. “Dude, you got a girlfriend?? That’s amazing, congrats! When were you gonna tell us??”
“Huh? I don’t have–” Adrien tried to interject.
“Oh, no! I’m so sorry Adrien,” Lila pretended to realize she’d said too much. “I didn’t know you wanted to keep it a secret. How silly of me! Surely your father would take away your extra free time if he knew you were spending it with a girl instead of studying.”
Kim pumped his arms excitedly. “Don’t worry, bro! We can totally keep a secret! Right, Marinette?”
Marinette smiled weakly, trying her best to look cooperative, and nodded.
“So, tell us about her, Adrien! Tell us about this girl you love so much,” Lila prodded.
Adrien’s cheeks turned bright red. “W-well, she’s not actually my girlfriend, b-but–”
Kim waggled his eyebrows. “But does she want to be?” he asked playfully.
Adrien laughed, voice high and skittish, “Uhh, I-I don’t know… Umm– w-we’ll see what happens. I-I want to take things slow.”
“Do you like her?”
Adrien’s head whipped around. It was Marinette who’d asked the question, her voice soft and curious.
Her eyes searched his, sincerely seeking the knowledge she both yearned and dreaded to hear. Her heart clenched painfully in her chest, knowing that his answer could change everything.
And yet, she needed to know.
Adrien’s face softened, the corners of his mouth crinkling with the ghost of a smile, and his cheeks gained a more subdued shade of pink, which contrasted with the embarrassed shade of red he’d worn earlier.
“A lot,” he replied breathily, like a wistful sigh, like he’d rather be with his loved one than anywhere else in the world.
Marinette swallowed heavily, and she forced herself to smile. “I’m happy for you,” she said as earnestly as she could manage.
After all, Adrien’s happiness was always paramount. No matter the source.
Their conversation was cut short by the sound of the bell, and the group scattered into the surrounding seats. Lila gave Marinette one last self-satisfied smile before walking away; not that Marinette even noticed. Her body felt too numb, too limp, too weary to see or care. All she could see in her mind’s eye was the way Adrien’s eyes lit up when he talked about the person he cared for. It had been brief, but it had been enough. She’d seen it. She knew now.
Adrien Agreste was in love.
(Mood Music: “No One Knows Who I Am” - (Jekyll & Hyde, the musical) Frank Wildhorn)
The last period of the day went by more sluggishly than any other she’d ever experienced in her life. Marinette’s mind replayed that conversation a seemingly infinite amount of times by the time the bell rang and it was time to go home. She lethargically packed up her belongings and left the classroom.
Before she reached the locker room, however, a hand gently tapped her on the shoulder, and she turned around.
It was Adrien. Of course. It just had to be him.
He meekly asked if he could talk to her in private. She agreed. They stepped into an emptied room, and he looked around to make sure no one else was present.
“I’m… sorry about the awkwardness from before, Mari,” he muttered uneasily.
“It’s okay, I’m just sorry you got put on the spot,” she replied, twisting her hands together, her shoulders tense with discomfort.
He seemed to squirm a bit himself as he continued, “D-did… Did you see…?” He gestured towards his scarf.
Marinette froze and her gaze dropped to the ground. She couldn’t get herself to speak, so she nodded.
Adrien took a deep breath. “W-would it be too much trouble if I asked you to not tell anyone? Things could get really difficult for me if- if people were to find out.”
Marinette’s head bobbed up and down quickly. “I-it’s okay! I won’t say anything! I-I don’t want to get you into trouble. Anytime you need help, I’ll be here.”
Before she knew it, she was being pulled into a brief hug. She willed her arms to hug him back, although she couldn’t really feel her body right now.
Adrien let go of her and put his hands on her shoulders in reassurance. “I promise everything is going to be okay. Everything is fine now. Trust me. Thank you, Marinette.”
Marinette’s mouth smiled back, and she heard her own voice say, “Anytime.”
Adrien thanked her again, and opened the door to leave. “See ya tomorrow.”
“S-see you,” she called back.
The door closed behind him, and Marinette was left alone. Everything felt like it was steeped in a thick haze. As if she was stranded in a vast fog with no discernable way to go. She felt hollow, yet heavy, which didn’t make a single bit of sense. A gaping, empty hole where her chest was, ripped away suddenly and without warning.
Is this... is this what heartbreak feels like?
Chat landed on Marinette’s balcony and knocked on the hatch five times, as they’d previously agreed. He listened for any of the code phrases or sounds that they’d gone over and practiced. There was no answer, which could only mean that she wasn’t home yet. However, since the latch was always unlocked for him now that they were roommates, he had permission to enter.
He felt pretty silly wearing a backpack as Chat Noir, so he didn’t dally in her bedroom, and instead went to drop it off in his own room.
Chat wondered what could be going through Marinette’s head after she saw his bruising. Had she figured out that Gabriel was abusive? She’d agreed to trust him, so maybe she believed he’d been able to work out his home situation. Did she think he still lived back at the mansion?
He plopped face down on the sofa. UGH, this all sucked. He didn’t want to lie to her, but he couldn’t tell her the truth, either. She was the nicest girl, and all he’d been doing lately was be dishonest with her. Not without reason, but still. He felt horrible about it.
And she’d looked so out of it at the end of school. He wondered what might have happened to her, since she’d seemed in such high spirits at the beginning of the school day. And what was that weirdness with Lila all about?
He didn’t have to wonder long, because a few moments later, his cat ears perked up as he heard footsteps that led to the front door. He sat up and turned around, excitedly awaiting her arrival.
Marinette opened the door and entered the living area. She closed the door and silently set her backpack down. He got up to greet her, but something was wrong. Her whole aura was different. Even in the dim late afternoon light, Chat could see the weariness in her expression, the sadness in her posture.
“Mari…?”
Several long strides later and he was there, in front of her, holding her by the arms.
“Mari, what happened?!” he asked more urgently. “Are you okay??”
She looked up at him, her glassy blue eyes becoming damp. Then she crashed into him, gripping him like he was the only thing keeping her from sinking into a sea of quicksand.
She cried, and he held her. He was desperate to know what had happened, but he waited, stroking her hair, running his fingers through it soothingly, not pushing her, but always willing to listen.
Finally, after a few moments, she spoke. “There’s someone else,” she whispered simply.
Then he understood.
Chat held her, and she sobbed quietly, and together they slumped to the ground. She didn’t need words of comfort, or any reassurance that she didn’t need this guy, or to be told that she was too good for him, or that there were other fish in the sea. She didn’t need to be told any of those things. All they needed at this moment was each other. And that was enough.

unusual seventeen date ideas
zoolA/N: I’m posting these to fill in the space while I finish chapters for my fics. These ideas came from a ritalin-fueled afternoon so they are NOT intended to be serious. I definitely do not see any of the members engaging in these types of activities so, again, none of this is serious
Warnings: criminal activity, theft, “”borrowing””, mentions of drugs (no drug use), pyramid schemes, some softness and fluff, brief mentions of police (acab), mentions of trash, mentions of food, heights
Tumblr media
stealing bikes with seungcheol
seungcheol would pick you up precisely at 5am from outside your house, he would drive you through some quiet suburban neighborhoods (so romantique) and you'd pick off any bikes, trikes, and (if you're really lucky) electric scooters you find sitting outside the pristine homes of the neighborhood. Then you both would spend the whole day at the local park having fun and trading the bikes you stole to kids for their drones, ice cream cones, lunch money, whatever you want! the options are limitless when you're stealing bikes with seungcheol.
dumpster diving with jeonghan
your dates with jeonghan usually consisted of going out to fancy restaurants and getting something to eat, most definitely in multiple courses. "let's try something different," jeonghan suggested when you popped the nightly question of what do you want to eat. Much to your surprise and delight, jeonghan drove you in his 2014 white honda civic to applebee's, one of your favorite establishments. "are we getting potato skins?" "haha," he chuckled with a light behind his eyes, "something like that." he parked behind the building and opened the door for you, leading you to the dumpsters. before you could process what was going on. jeonghan had whipped the dumpster lid open and was scaling the side of the structure.  you spent the rest of the evening going from place to place, scoring new makeup palettes and other goodies. needless to say, it was amazing how many potato skins your local applebee's threw out everyday.
squatting in abandoned buildings with joshua
joshua was the sweetest, most thoughtful boyfriend you could ever ask for. he was constantly waiting on you hand and foot and taking you on lavish vacations. however, you were growing tired of trips to dubai and paris, and wanted to go on a more rugged, adventure vacation. you brought it up to him and he smiled at you, reading your mind. two weeks later, joshua surprised you with an uber ride to the nearest abandoned Kmart in your town, giddy with excitement, you found that he had already bolt-cut the padlock on the expansive automatic doors. You spent the night walking up and down the aisles before going up to the roof. unfortunately, the door to the roof locked automatically, trapping you on top of the kmart.  you and joshua spent the rest of your stay pointing out constellations and falling asleep under the stars before crafting a makeshift rope out of your own clothes to get down the building.
climbing things with jun
jun was a man of many hobbies and recreations, and climbing was one of them. every thursday and sunday night junhui would shake you out of bed and drag you to the nearest climbable structure. ladders, fences, even flights of stairs that led to god-knows-where. one sunday night, jun with excitement and anticipation coursing through his veins, he woke you up and ran out of bed so fast he barely had time to put on his shoes, not even noticing that he was wearing his old gucci slides on the wrong feet. "i have a good feeling about this one," he assured you while you ran through the night, finally approaching a cellular tower. without warning, jun began to climb and climb and climb, leaving you scrambling to get your foothold on the tower. once at the top, jun held your hand while you shivered against the wind. "y/n, look!" he shouted and pointed frantically at the ocean before you. "what is it?" "let's find out." wading through the ocean together, you struggled to keep up with his freestyle swimming towards your next target. it was an oil rig. oh junhui, you thought and smiled, what a character. you came back to the rig every thursday and sunday night, that is, before you were arrested by the coast guard, of course. classic junhui.
zoological warfare with soonyoung
it was no secret that soonyoung loved (and you mean loved) tigers. tiger stuffed animals filled your couches, bed, and dining room chairs; tiger paintings custom commissioned and worth thousands adorned your walls, and tiger videos from animal planet and other sources played night and day on your 100 inch television. Soonyoung cultivated his appreciation for the big cat by playing Zoo Tycoon on his laptop, so much that you practically had to rip the mouse out of his hand and threatened to burn the fifteen year old cd-rom. "soonyoungie," you cooed one afternoon, "i have a better idea than playing zoo tycoon..." immediately his eyes darkened, he knew exactly what you were talking about. You'd been to the zoo so many times before, but this time was different. While Soonyoung oohed and awwed at the tigers in their habitat, you reminded him of the real reason why you were at the zoo that late afternoon. Wire cutters in hand you were quick to disable the motion sensors and electric fences surrounding the enclosure. His deliciously built muscles strained while he pulled open the large fence, "you're free now," he whispered to himself. you both ran out of the habitat and back into the more populated areas of the zoo. words can't describe the elation soonyoung felt while he watched his favorite animals prance into the crowd, finally able to be their true selves.
recreating fahrenheit 451 with wonwoo
wonwoo loved his books more than anything else in his life, except, of course, you. he was halfway through his favorite book when the thought hit him like a ton of bricks. i have to recreate this with y/n, he thought to himself. He read for a couple more hours--not wanting to lose the plot of his favorite dystopian novel--before seeking you out. "y/n," he patted the top of your head lightly, "have you ever read fahrenheit 451?" "of course," you replied, smiling at your silly boyfriend, "we all had to read it in high school." not twenty minutes later were you and wonwoo elbows deep in the pile of books you had stacked in the middle of the alley by your apartment.
scalping concert tickets with jihoon
jihoon was a master producer, everyone knew it. The only thing he loved more than producing was making money, and you and your determined boyfriend were constantly jumping from one side-hustle to another. One of jihoon’s favorite side-hustles was printing fake concert tickets and selling them at the same venues he performed at. It was a two-in-one package, he used to tell you when you were hesitant about the legalities of such a practice. He’d sell tickets for hundreds, sometimes thousands, of dollars, a few hours before a performance and then he’d run inside, get ready, and perform himself! After a while, you stopped noticing the angry crowds that would gather outside the venues during shows and you let yourself enjoy the show from backstage surrounded by a heavy stack of cash. The best part was, you didn’t have to pay taxes on it!
Jihoon could do a number of jobs all at once, from starting etsy stores to mowing lawns for a couple extra dollars, but by far this was his favorite technique. With the money he made he could buy you the extravagances you deserved.
joining an MLM with seokmin
Seokmin was all about the newest, greatest thing. When Jihoon came by one day and told him all about his experience selling essential oils at house parties, seokmin was instantly hooked on the prospect. It took you a little bit of convincing, but after watching your boyfriend steal the show with suburban housewives at the parties he hosted, you knew you had to support him in every way you could. It took a second mortgage on your house and two paycheck advancements, but you were able to build up enough stock of essential oils from the headquarters to fill up your spare room. Party after party you and Seokmin gave out samples after samples, freebies galore, but you were never able to fully deplete the millions of bottles of clove oil and the blends seokmin swore would make you both rich. Even though you never broke even, you loved your new life with seokmin. You had to sell your house and live out of a mini-van you found abandoned on the highway, but it gave you and seokmin a great supply of #VanLife instagram posts.
grand theft auto with mingyu
Dating mingyu was always thrilling and there was always something exciting happening whenever you were together. Tonight was no different, as mingyu promised you that he was taking you out to get a new car. You were ecstatic, having only dated mingyu three and a half weeks, it was a little soon for such extravagant gifts like a whole car, but you weren’t one to complain and you certainly did not want to hurt his feelings.
The music blared loudly while you flew down the freeway in the new drop-top audi Mingyu got for you. You were a little worried when the car dealer insisted on coming with you for the test drive, but Mingyu’s charm and quick thinking, the dealer was nothing to worry about. Mingyu turned the radio up even higher when the sirens approached, adding to the thrill of the night.
“The lights make you look so pretty,” Mingyu fawned from the driver’s seat, “we should do this more often.”
You turned around to look behind you, the wind chapping your lips and whipping your hair, smiling.
you’ve always wanted a police escort.
borrowing from designer stores with minghao
minghao's sense of style was unparalleled, and being his significant other, you were privy to plenty of style and fashion advice. not that you minded, of course, because minghao would usually get so fed up with your disastrous outfits that he would let you wear his own clothes to save time and hassle. "y/n," minghao sighed after watching you put layer three jackets on top of each other, "we're going shopping. I'm going to teach you how to buy clothes." the places minghao shopped were unbelievable; while you usually bought your clothes off of Wish and Aliexpress, minghao was a well-known regular at versace, hermes, louis vuitton, and every other designer you could think of. your minimum wage paycheck could in no way sponsor these purchases, so you were completely reliant on minhao for these types of shopping trips. once in gucci, minghao pulled his bucket hat lower, covering his eyes and instructing you to do the same. he swung around the large umbrella he carried with him to the shops (confusing since it was not raining), and you watched him drop item after item into the half opened umbrella. astonished and amazed, you grabbed a wallet off of the shelf and attempted to pocket it discretely, but were caught by security. You watched as minghao left the store while you were being interrogated by the mall security. Lucky for you, you were able to get away safely and caught up with minghao to grab a pretzel before leaving the mall.
hitchhiking to jeju with seungkwan
there wasn't a day that went by when seungkwan didn't miss home: the tangerine groves, the crisp sea air, and Hallasan mountain. on one of his routine pining sessions, you had the brightest idea you'd had in a very long time, it was your chance to finally go on a much needed trip with Seungkwan to the place he loved most. You whipped out yours and his favorite and most reliable tennis shoes, grabbed a bottle of water to share, and set on your way. Despite the heat and exhaustion, seungkwan was overjoyed to be on his way to Jeju, especially to be able to go there with you and show you his old stomping grounds. As you both walked, thumbs out, you found refuge in a few nice strangers' cars. Seungkwan loved the economical nature of your trip and you loved the fact that you got to spend it with him.
cult-hopping with vernon
vernon had some...interesting hobbies and past-times, but being his significant other you loved to share these moments with him, even if they were a little strange at moments. something that vernon had always, and he meant  a l w a y s wanted to do was something he called "cult-hopping" where the two of you would spend a few months to a year joining cult after cult just to understand and learn the ins-and-outs of each organization before leaving and moving onto the next one. For the first few weeks, the experience was painfully slow, but after you'd moved on to your fourth (or was it fifth?) cult, you began to develop the understand and appreciation for it that vernon always hoped you would. You drank kool-aid, had communal baths, and even shared in some unusual choices of meals. It warmed your heart t be able to spend this much needed time with vernon, and he was happy to learn more about cults.
drug trafficking with chan
airports were your absolute favorite place, something about them made you feel so comforted and at home. with chan there to hold your hand through security and sew up secret pockets in your luggage, it felt extra special. you weren't new to the drug trafficking scene, and found it as a lovely way to make some extra money when funds were tight; although chan was definitely not in need of money due to his idol career, he still loved to see what you did best. He watched a few youtube tutorials and already he was a pro at getting through security and past the drug dogs. You marveled at how chan even bent down to pet a few of the canine officers, amazed at his composure throughout the whole process. If things went well this trip, you knew that your boss would ask him to join the ranks, meaning you and chan could fly, take trains, and travel whenever and wherever you wanted.

Thief’s Apprentice: Fashion of Various Classes of the Living and Dead
IN GENERAL
Buttons don’t exist in Veilheim because they haven’t been invented. There is no need for buttons because the living tend to first lose their fingers to the plague and aren’t dextrous enough to use buttons. Revenants are sewn into their clothes and never take them off unless they get totally destroyed, so they have no need for buttons either.
Revenants and the living have different attitudes towards metal. For the living, gold-plated things and gold alloys look the same as pure gold. Revenants can sense substances, so if they wear gold, they prefer to wear pure gold. The alternatives are just sad.
Some professions wear an unofficial uniform, to be easily recognised, and also because these clothes are practical for how they work, and also because I can’t be assed to make a custom model for everyone. For example, shepherds never have prosthetics to advertise their ready supply of meat. Judges wear tall crowned helmets because they are literally and metaphorically higher up than anyone else in court. Reapers heavily armor their ankles to prevent accidental dismemberments and are shirtless, to show that their terrifying metal tools are for farming, not fighting, and also to prevent living reapers from suffering from heat, and also because reaping is an awesome and sexy job.
Revenants move their prosthetics by imbuing them with their souls, and the same happens with clothes. Since fabric is organic and made to store the original being’s, whether it be a silk worm or a flax plant, soul, human souls can’t make a good enough foothold in the material to move it. Still, revenant clothing is integral for sensing and personal esteem, so changing is more like a surgical procedure. Wearing a new outfit feels like nerve damage. Your skin and subcutaneous fat has died, so you were peeled and replaced with more skin and fat, and you can’t feel anything until your nerves heal.
The debutante penchant for inventing new fashions and constantly changing clothes is similar to plastic surgery. There is the same impression of frivolous spending and vanity, but also advertising the size of your soul that enables you to be comfortable with your new outfit within hours, and also the strength of your resolve to have your skin replaced over and over. The debutantes may be capricious and wasteful, but they are not cowards.
THE DEAD
The dead in Veilheim like to wear wool heavily dyed in bright colors with metal, such as Mercury Red and Cobalt Blue. This is because revenants don’t see and instead send out tiny pieces of their souls to feel distance and substances. Their impression of color is based off how concentrated various substances are, so while the living may see fabric as too saturated with dirt to identify color, revenants can feel the copper in the fabric and know how green it is.
Wool, as the hair of sheep, carries plague so it’s considered unsafe for the living to wear. Revenants wearing plant-based fabrics is seen as selfish. It’s also considered rude for revenants to wear multiple colors or patterns, because it forces people to expend more of their soul to see all the colors and recognise you. The long ribbons, while stylish, also serve a practical purpose. Since revenants don’t feel or have a sense of balance, if the ribbons are pointing in a direction, that’s probably where down is, and if they are waving a lot, there might be wind.
Quail Racer
As our exemplar of revenant poverty in Veilheim, Quail Racer doesn’t wear clothes, has no remaining flesh, and her prosthetics barely keep her together. Based off how tall she is and how healthy and unwarped her bones are, Quail Racer must have caught the plague late in life and died soon after. Her memory and mental faculties are so bad that she can’t obey orders or find any gainful employment. Instead, she devotes herself to taking care of, racing, and betting on quails. Quail Racer is seen as a cautionary tale of what happens if you die before your time, but she has more money than it may seem. Instead of spending it on herself, she spends it on quails.
You can argue that revenants with poor mental faculties and a stunted understanding of the world are more carefree and can devote their time and energy to their own happiness instead of the well-being of the city as a whole without guilt, but they can only live so long like this before wearing down into senseless bones, and are often victims of crimes, ranging from petty robbery to being kidnapped for secret illegal slavery to being taken apart for raw materials. Quail Racer is much beloved by the quail racing community, so nothing too bad has happened to her yet.
Practical Cartographer
Practical Cartographer tries to present as the average Veilheimer in order to spread news of the great city to other travellers. His prosthetics are better than most can afford up front, but some revenants purposefully put themselves into debt to get a better body. Since Practical Cartographer scrounges his map materials from garbage, his business has almost no operational cost and he is no longer in debt. Most revenants of average means died before before the plague rendered them bedridden and were not rich enough in life to learn an intellectual craft, and so have a clear career path in manual or industrial labor. Although somewhat skilled and artistic, Practical Cartographer’s maps are so obviously mass-produced at low quality that for census reasons he counts as a common industrial laborer instead of an artisan, something that other people mock him for, but he doesn’t care about.
Often poorer revenants wear more pieces of clothing, so that if one piece gets destroyed, they don’t have to replace their whole outfit. Conversely, richer revenants often wear clothes in a single piece so they can flex on replacing an entire outfit. This is not an ironclad rule, so whenever Practical Cartographer gets hit with, “Why do you dress like a laborer?”, he can hit back with, “I dress like the Veiled Goddess. Are you calling our Goddess a laborer?”
Master Computer
Master Computer was spoiled in life and given the best education in finance and math, and after she died, it would be a terrible waste if she didn’t make a name for herself. Although she was not severely infected before she died, she has worked around her terrible short-term memory via prosthetic devices and communicating mostly via writing. Computers are hired to do a lot of math and take detailed records, and can be identified by the abacuses, plumb bobs, clocks, and other devices attached to their heads. Since Master Computer sends out her subordinates and apprentices to measure and record things, she has no measuring devices and is instead rigged with a huge opulent abacus with gold beads to do calculations as quickly as possible.
She is rich, but not monumentally rich. She can afford to wear lots of gold, but not as much gold as turbo plutocrats like the civil servant triumvirate. Instead of spending on fine materials, she instead spends on prosthetics. Most cities in Surenia rarely have revenants deciding to look much different from a regular living human, but in Veilheim, where death is normalised and the finest prosthetics are made, revenants can be gigantic and/or recast in bizarre inhuman shapes if they can afford it. Master Computer can be seen and heard from far away, towering over most people and clicking and clacking her gold abacus beads and her 11 metal legs.
THE LIVING
To avoid excess plague and toxic metal exposure, the living in Veilheim tend to wear undyed plant-based fabrics. It’s fine for the living to wear patterns because they can see. Some late stage plaguebearers decide to wear metal dyes anyway because they figure they will die of the plague before they get metal poisoning. Organic dyes are also worn, but revenants can’t see light, so the finest of murex purple dyes comes across to them as a nasty greenish brown. If revenants are bad at differentiating organic substances, how do they see hair and skin color? Revenants can sense the souls of others and can get an impression of how a living being looks based off their own self image.
It’s good to keep track of your bones as they fall out. After you die, you can get them reattached. People heavily ravaged by the plague used to plait them together with ribbons, but as painkillers, health care, and prosthetics for the living improved, previously bedridden people could walk around, so the new fashion is to wear your bones wired to a ring for convenience.
Kaolin
It’s very tragic when a child gets the plague. Some children are born to plaguebearing mothers, and are guaranteed to die within a year. Some children get infected on their own and can no longer live with their family in the plague-free district. They lack the strength to endure years of being consumed by plague, and are guaranteed to go mad after they die, so plaguebearing children are allowed to go wherever they want and do whatever they want within reason. Since the children aren’t expected to live long enough to grow taller, they get one new outfit and that’s it. What remains of their lives is devoted to fun. A special hollow tower was made for them to throw themselves into when they can’t stand it anymore. Sometimes children who are too far gone to climb the tower will beg for passerby to kill them. This is horrible, but the alternative is to wait for children to slowly die in agony on their own, and then the resulting mad revenants will wreak havoc. Another alternative is rounding up plaguebearing children and killing them, which nobody wants to do.
Kaolin is smart enough to understand how precarious it is to be a plaguebearing child and has plans to return to sanity after dying. This is one reason why Kaolin is so interested in the bros: two of them have child-sized skeletons, but they are mostly not mad. Someone cared about them enough to raise them after they died.
Kios
Kios was lucky enough for the plague to first affect her spine, so she is guaranteed some level of sanity after she dies. After a life of working in breweries, farms, and distilleries, Kios has a very good understanding of plant fermentation and preservation and now spends most of her time on street corners in the market district smoking outrageous amounts of opium, playing board games, and giving fairly good perfume mixing and vegetable pickling advice. There’s no guarantee how she will turn out after dying, but Kios assumes she will become a farmer or reaper or small-time distiller or working in Agriculture Scientist’s office.
The living want to show off how infected they are, but at the same time want to stay otherwise healthy. Hands and feet are often bandaged because they are most easily damaged. Heads are also bandaged because the thin skin of the scalp is always sloughing off and ears are leaking infectious fluids. It’s a point of pride to get the plague in a more unusual place. Kios thus has a very good reason to wear a backless dress. She lost a fair amount of her hands and feet, so she has a pretty decent ring of bones.
Astragalus Rambush
Rambush owns most of the aforementioned breweries and distilleries. As the first living person to owe taxes under the new law, he maintains an air of superiority over revenants complaining about getting stabbed through the ribcage because he got away with paying one third of what he owed by getting stabbed through the hand that was already lost to plague. His nose and lips have rotted off, but he can’t cover them otherwise he will suffocate and drown in infectious fluids, so everyone just has to deal with that.
Rambush expects to have some level of control over the family business after he dies, and uses his status as a plaguebearer to negotiate favorable deals with revenants for his family, even though he hasn’t seen most of them since he got the plague. By wearing a cloak that is purple to the living and patterns visible to revenants, Rambush hopes to be at least partially purple to everyone, even though it’s technically an assholish thing to do. Although metal prosthetics are starting to be made for the living, they were designed for revenants and are very hard to use. Since Rambush lost an arm and a leg, his ring of bones is impressive and frightening to behold.

I Can’t Eat Love part 7
Here is the next part to the story! Hope you guys enjoy!
Part 1 / Part 2 / Part 3/ Part 4 / Part 5 / Part 6 linked here. (I’m going to have to make a master post, aren’t I.)
___________________________
The next day’s etiquette lessons were harsher, just as Mrs. Rendler promised. I was able to keep up, using my previous knowledge and skills, but this time I did my best to make it look difficult, hoping that she would relax the pace a little. Instead my efforts rewarded me with her satisfied expression, and a gleam in her eye that promised only more pain and suffering.
“You will be the greatest young lady I have ever trained.” She pronounced, looking me over from head to toe critically. “But must you dress so… plainly? I will say it’s a great improvement over those frilly monstrosities you used to wear to lessons, but the last two outfits have been simply dull.”
I smiled at her words, glancing down at my plain grey gown. Over the last week I had sold the majority of my more ridiculous gowns, leaving me with surprisingly few choices. Angela had pouted, saying that I was going to be out of style, but I overruled her, as well as ignored her suggestion that she be allowed to choose my new gowns. I very much enjoyed my simpler gowns, but knew that I would need something nicer… at least for public venues.
Fortunately I had an idea about that.
“I’m changing over my wardrobe. I think it’s time I take on a more mature style, so as to not embarrass my parents or the Royal family.”
“You’re so grown up!” Queen Amerande sat down next to me, briefly hugging me as she settled in. “First you impress everyone with your improvements on your etiquette and now this?” She wiped her eyes. “I couldn’t be prouder as your mother.”
“Future Mother in Law!” Mrs. Rendler insisted.
“Don’t step on my dreams!” She hugged me again, smiling even as she argued. I couldn’t help but chuckle at her antics, but found it increasingly difficult to understand the Queen’s behavior. I thought I had gotten more discerning from my past life, able to see people’s true intentions. It had served me well with the others who seemed to be scheming around me. But with her… all I could see was a loving, cheerful person. There were no cracks in her disguise, she seemed completely at ease as she showered me with compliments and acted like a mother.
But it had to be a lie.
I felt a burning rage take root in my stomach, but I hid it as best I could, wondering how I could make it through three more years of training with her without breaking.
Finally we were done. With a sigh of relief, I headed to the Royal Treasury, looking forward to my lessons with Jim. I had completed the reading assignment he had given me, but now I had pages of questions I wanted to discuss with him. Entering the room, I clutched my books and notes in my arms, already saying a greeting…
Only to come to a screeching halt as I realized there was a stranger in the room.
Jim looked up at my arrival, waving. “Ah, Lenora! Good, you’re here so we can get started.” Glancing between myself and the stranger, he paused. “Oh I should introduce you two…”
“No need.” The young man interrupted Jim with a grin. “We’ve sort of met before.” I recognized him from the previous week at my home, he had been together with Prince Rolan.
Hardly a point in his favor.
“Nathaniel. But you can call me Nate, Miss…”
I had forgotten how tall he was, I had to look up at him as I reached out my hand to shake his own. Standing between Nathaniel and Jim who also towered over me, I felt very small… an irritating feeling.  “Lenora.”
“Of course, I’ve heard a lot about you…” He kept speaking, but my attention had turned sharply. Not to him, or his words, but to his arm.
“What is this?!” I interrupted, grabbing his hand between both of my own. His face turning slightly red, Nate stuttered. “my hand ?”
“No, no the shirt!” I looked at the sleeve once more with a sigh before glancing excitedly at Nate. “Can you take it off?”
 “…”
“…”
Both Nate and Jim stared at me in absolute confusion, but I was already looking closer, ignoring them.
“I may not understand your country’s customs well, but are young ladies usually this… forward?”
Jim cleared his throat. “Not usually, maybe she’s just a little excited.” He tapped me on the shoulder, startling me. “Umm… Lenora. Usually you get to know young fellows a little better before asking to see them undressed.”
“See HIM undressed?” I laughed. “You can if you want to, Jim. I just want the shirt.”
“…”
“…”
They were stunned into silence once more, allowing me to happily look closer at the arm I was still clutching.
“The shirt?” Nate asked finally, his skin a bright red, contrasting with his dark hair.
“Yes!” I pinched the sleeve between two fingers. “I’ve never seen such a beautiful weave before, this cloth is so well constructed!” I checked the seams, whistling in appreciation “And whoever sewed your clothes together was very talented, the stitching is quite extraordinary!”
“Yes, um… can you let go?” He was covering his face with his free hand. I then came to the realization that I was clutching his arm in my hands. Partially freed from my fascination with his shirt, I let go with a small shriek, apologizing.
“I’m so sorry! That was very rude.”
“It’s okay.” He shot me a wry grin. “It was an definitely a novel experience.”
Jim was roaring with laughter, holding his sides. “You should apologize to the poor young man’s pride! A pretty young lady demands he strip, but is more interested in his clothes than him!” He continued laughing after that, almost in tears.
Nate shot him a dirty look. “You are not a nice person.”
I genuinely felt bad. I had experienced a brief moment of utter excitement when I had seen the cloth, my plans for the future crowding my brain and leaving no room for common sense. I had probably scared him out of his mind. “Again, I apologize…”
“Don’t.” He waved a hand. “I am the one who must apologize for making assumptions…”
I raised an eyebrow, “Not without reason…”
“But given your engagement to the prince, those assumptions were not kind to you.” He stepped back, sketching a formal bow very gracefully. I felt like applauding, knowing the amount of work that went in to perfecting that. “How can I make it up to you?”
I knew I shouldn’t let him apologize, but I couldn’t pass off the opportunity. “Can you tell me where I could purchase the cloth used to make your shirt?” I clasped my hands together, to keep them from shaking with excitement.
Nate looked confused. “The cloth?” glancing down at the shirt, he shook his head. “It’s made in Tilendra, my home country. It’s a special technique handed down there.”
“Oh. Of course.” I felt my shoulders slump. My poor plans!
“But I can introduce you to one of the largest weaving groups in the capital. The woman who runs it is a little rough, but if you offer a decent price, she may be willing to work with you. “
“Really?”
“But why would you need cloth?” Jim broke in. “I would think you could have all the dresses you want made in the capital.
I smiled. “You think too small, Jim. This is much more important than a couple ball-gowns. I told you I was going to save the Duchy. And to do that, I have a plan.”
We started the lesson, going over the reading assignments from the past week. To my surprise Nate had been reading the same chapters, and participated fully in the discussion. He seemed to have a milder disposition, often breaking up arguments when Jim and I disagreed. The time passed faster than I realized, and when he put an end to the lesson, I found I was disappointed the three of us couldn’t talk longer.
It was fun.
“Alright, here are the assignments for next week.” He handed me another piece of paper. I glanced at it, again holding back tears at the sheer volume he was expecting me to cover within the space of a week. Silently grumbling to myself, I was surprised when he patted me on the shoulder.
“You did well. You grasped these concepts even better than I did years ago back when I was learning it.”
I sighed. “Now if only I could have the benefit of experience like you.”
“It will come.” He grinned, “One way or the other. And in the meantime, if you need advice with one of your projects… just ask.”
I was pleasantly surprised at the offer. “Thank you.”
Nate cleared his throat. “Could I have the reading assignment as well?”
“Sure.” Jim shrugged, writing down the chapters assigned on a second piece of paper “But I thought you were leaving soon?”
“I’m here to gain knowledge and make allies. Jim. However long that takes.” He grinned, taking the paper. “And this is the kind of knowledge we need in Tilendra if we are to be a thriving nation.”
“That’s fine with me, Nate. But like I said before, there will be no special treatment here! Do the work, or don’t waste my time by showing up. ”
Jim’s harsh words didn’t seem to bother Nate at all. “Deal.” Turning to me, he shook my hand once more. “Nice to meet you, Lenora. I’ll talk to you next week regarding the cloth.”
“Thanks, I look forward to it.” I walked away, feeling relieved. Not only had I gained a lot from the classes, and felt ready to put some of the principles I had gathered to practice, but the first step in my plan for true financial independence had just been taken.
This life was different.
I was changing things.
___________________________
“Miss.” Hallers stepped into my office, a truly conflicted expression on his face. “There is a visitor here, but I am unsure if it’s… appropriate.”
I smiled, trying to relieve the butler’s tension. “Who is it?”
He cleared his throat uncomfortably. “The man you wanted to purchase information from. ‘Mr. Rig.’” He paused. “Should I turn him away, Miss?”
“Rig’s here?” Took him long enough. “Let him in.”
“Are you sure?” It seemed Hallers couldn’t hold back his protest. “He’s hardly a suitable guest!”
“It’s alright, the Duchy needs him.” I thought for a moment. “If possible, would you be willing to stay in the room? There’s safety in numbers.”
“Very good, Miss.” I he was disapproving or not, it was difficult to tell. Hallers’ expression had retreated into a proper polite mask, hiding his thoughts. He left, leaving me unexpectedly nervous. I had known Rig in a different lifetime. What if he wasn’t the same person? Checking the object strapped to the underside of my desk, I settled into my chair, my back straight and my face uncaring. I couldn’t let Rig sniff out that I was desperate, he’d be impossible to bargain down after that.
Hallers reappeared. “Mr. Rig, Miss.”
Behind him stepped a man, and I felt my breath catch in my chest at the familiar sight.
___________________________
“Poor thing, you starving?” An older man with a gentle smile reached out and helped me to my feet.
“You can work for me, get back on your feet.”
I took his hand warily, having learned to not trust appealing offers. “Why would you help me?”
He shrugged. “Who knows? Maybe in another lifetime you can pay me back.”
___________________________
Rig looked the same as he did as when I first met him. He would never stand out in a crowd unless he wanted to. His nose was slightly crooked, as if it had been broken and never healed correctly. His hair was just starting to grey at the temples, his exact age difficult to determine. He was short, barely taller than me, but he projected an air of confidence as if all the secrets in the world hid behind his eyes.
“Just Rig is fine.” He stepped closer, leaving some space and my desk between us. “I’m nowhere near fancy enough to warrant a ‘Mister.’”
I grinned. “Of course, Rig. How can I help you.”
“I got… your request.” He shrugged. “The info is simple enough.”
 I raised an eyebrow. “But?”
“But… that’s not the tricky part.” He slouched against the wall facing me, sticking his hands in his pockets. “The tricky part is how a little noble lady like you got the password that’s known only to my inner circle?”
“That?” I leaned back in my chair, my hands in my lap. “Let’s just say you and I were friends in another lifetime. This will not be my only commission. I will have plenty of work for your and all your group. “ I smiled, thinking of  the time I had spent under his employ. “Consider it returning a favor.”
Rig didn’t smile back. “No deal. I don’t do business with the nobility. You’re all soft… weak. And I don’t like it when there’s a weak link that’s got something on me.” He looked me over with a disdainful scoff. “You look like the type that would talk under pressure.”
THUNK!
The knife I had retrieved under my desk flew through the air, burying itself in the wall just beside his face. I vaulted over the desk, grateful for the looser, simpler skirt I had chosen for that day, and grabbed Rig. My right hand pinned his shoulder against the wall, the other grabbing the hilt of my knife.
It was ironic that I was using my knife throwing skills to threaten Rig of all people.
After all, he had been the one to teach me to throw one in the first place.
I kept my voice low and calm. “I’m not soft. I’m a determined woman. One who will do anything to accomplish my goals. Don’t. hinder. me. “
At these words he started to push me away, only to stiffen up in fear as I leaned forward to whisper a single name into his ear.
“Raewynn.”
I stepped back, walking calmly to my desk and sitting down. “You’ll find that being my friend will be to you and your group’s benefit. You won’t regret it.” I left it unsaid of what would happen if he was against me.
His shoulder slumped, he looked up at me with terror in his eyes. “H-how? How could you possibly know...?”
I smiled. “I told you, we were friends in another life. You and I are the only ones alive who know right now. But if I were you, I wouldn’t trust anyone else with that matter. It’s a good way to end up dead.”
I wasn’t threatening him this time. I truly was trying to warn him. He seemed to sense it, nodding carefully and stepping closer, this time with much more caution and respect.
“Here’s the information you purchased. “ He took some documents from the inside of his coat, placing it on my desk. “The stuff they hide from the world, from their wives… heck even the stuff they hide from their lovers… all of it in there.”
I didn’t look through it, I knew it would be good. “Perfect. Thank you.”
Rig relaxed slightly. “Well, I AM the best at this.”
“Which is why I paid double your going rate.” I grinned at his shocked reaction. “You thought I didn’t know?”
“I hoped.” He muttered.
“Don’t worry. I’ll always pay double. Your work is worth it.” I slid a piece of paper across the desk. “Your next assignment.”
“This…” He read it, his eyes widening. “Are you sure…?”
“I know the answer to the question already, Rig.” I answered calmly. “I just need the proof.”
“Alright then.” He nodded, reaching out his hand to shake my own. I took it, the gesture hauntingly familiar.
___________________________
“Lee, we’ve got to go!” The older woman looked around frantically, as if expecting an attack at any moment. “They’ll be coming after us next!”
“All he did was trust the wrong person.” I whispered. “Love truly is a weakness, isn’t it?
“Lee, Come on!”
I wiped the tears from my eyes, reaching out to slowly close the eyes of the bloody corpse in front of me.
“Goodbye, Rig.”
“LEE!”
___________________________
“I must say, I’m glad I’m not your enemy.” His words startled me briefly, and I laughed at my own inattention. Rig was alive in this lifetime. Standing in front of me happy and whole.  There were still five years before he would be murdered in the streets.
I let go of his hand, a chill running down my spine at the thought. “Likewise.”
Rig walked out, leaving an awkward silence between Hallers and myself.
“...”
“You can ask, Hallers.”
“There’s too many questions.” He shook his head. “What did you whisper to him that scared him so deeply?”
I stared at the empty doorway, still caught by memories. “It was a name. Someone he cares about… someone he thought no one knew about.”
“How do you know about her then?” The question burst out of him, and he seemed to catch himself. “I apologize…”
“Don’t.” I smiled at him. “I’ve already said how I know.”
“But…”
“Just because you don’t believe me, doesn’t make it true.” The last few words came out as a sigh. Finished,  I turned my attention to the to folder Rig had left.
“If you say so.” He turned to leave, but I held up a hand, calling him back.
“Hallers, you can schedule the meeting with the tax officials for three days from now.”
It would give me enough time to prepare, without putting it off too much further.
“Yes, Miss.”
“Oh, and could you ask your brother to be present?”
That caught his attention. “My brother?”
“I need someone big and intimidating-looking to stand in the back of the room. Jim would be perfect. I’m happy to pay him.”
“Do we have to?” Hallers wasn’t one to whine, but this came pretty close. “He’s so… undignified.”
“Could you make yourself intimidating, then?” I asked seriously.
He looked up and down his thin, reedy frame. “I’ll talk to him.” He muttered, leaving.
I chuckled, returning to the information I had paid for. I needed to have everything in place perfectly for the meeting.
The whole Duchy was counting on it.

Pokemon Shield playthrough
I’ve been playing this game a lot since last night, and I still haven’t gotten on the train yet ;) I like to take games slowly to make sure I notice and experience everything along the way. It looks like the best way to share my game progress is through screenshots, so that’s what I’ll do. Cut for length and spoilers - I’ve been trying to avoid spoilers and leaks for the past couple weeks, so if you want to be able to experience the games fresh yourself, now might be a good time to click away. [This post covers up thru getting the Dynamax band]
I went ahead with the “standard” female character, but you can bet I’ll be customizing her as soon as I can. What’s with that knock-kneed stance, anyway? Pokemon trainers should stand strong and confident!
Tumblr media
Chairman Rose greets us. Everyone online was guessing he’ll turn out to be evil or something. He certainly looks suspicious, doesn’t he?
Tumblr media
And here comes the first surprise of the LP - a brand-new Pokemon, not even seen in trailers! (except for that fuzzy 1-frame image from a while back.) Its trunk looks kinda like a soup ladle. Maybe it’s a play on a teacup/teapot elephant? I wonder if it evolves...
Tumblr media
Here’s Leon fighting an unknown trainer - maybe a Gym leader?
Tumblr media
I really like the art style of the map - it’s so whimsical :)
Tumblr media
The map also shows current weather for all locations. Look at all the different stuff going on in the Wild Area at the same time! I’ve been to the real England, and I don’t remember it having such extreme weather...
The map also has a few useful features, like displaying your next objective, and showing the facilities in a town (but only once you’ve been there yourself). The towns and such all have really interesting names that emulate that old English sound.
Tumblr media
First thing I do when I gain control in a new Pokemon game? Change the battle style to “Set”. It seems more fair, plus it helps make the game just a bit more challenging.
I’m a little sad that the old option to change menu/text box borders seems to be forever abandoned, though... >.>
Tumblr media
My house. It’s a pretty decent-sized place. We have a pet Munchlax and a few Budew outside. My character practices her whistling.
Tumblr media
My mom. Or “mum” as the game calls her. The dialog is noticeably slanted toward a more British dialect - I wonder how they handled the accent in other languages?
Speaking of my mom, she seems rather big compared to me, doesn’t she? Quite a bit taller. I’m guessing my character is around 12 - when I was that age, I was the same height as my mom and done growing. Maybe they think people won’t believe this character is the mom’s child if she’s too tall?
Also, my dream is to one day have a /dad/ in a Pokemon game. Seriously, why does every other house I visit have a husband and wife, and my character is always stuck being the only child of a single parent? What if in one of these games, my dad was the champion or the evil team leader - how fun would that be?
Tumblr media
My bedroom. The pink clock on the wall reminds me of one from a previous Pokemon game - was it ORAS that had those round clocks on the wall that you could set?
Tumblr media
My first step on my journey. Looks like my mom spends every minute gardening - I guess the Budew help her?
Tumblr media
Ah yes, every Pokemon game needs a “power of science” guy :)
Tumblr media
Here’s another surprise - how many Pokemon games give you a fishing rod right at the start?! Usually you have to track down three different fisherman to get the three versions of the fishing rod. I’m also happy to see that Pokeballs have their own pocket again :)
Tumblr media
The handy map tells us where to go next, with even a little picture of our destination.
Tumblr media
The champion of Galar, of course, has a huge house.
Tumblr media
Wow, a Purrloin! I forgot that they stood on two legs. I like its little bed.
Also, Leon’s family decorate their house mainly in trophies.
Tumblr media
I guess this is Hop’s room - I like his artwork. I know Leon has a Charizard - does he have these other two Pokemon too, and that’s why Hop has posters of them?
Tumblr media
Leon’s room is mostly a shrine to hats.
Tumblr media
Speaking of Leon, he really knows how to play to the crowd ;)
Tumblr media
So, some people are wondering if /Leon/ will turn out to be evil in the story. I didn’t really get that vibe from him. He seems like a genuinely nice guy, but he does seem like he has some worries on his mind, like his cheer is sometimes forced?
Maybe he actually hates the limelight and gets uncomfortable with attention? Maybe he’s secretly terminally ill? Maybe there’s some massive threat about to attack the Galar region? He seems really concerned with making sure that Galar has lots of strong trainers. Maybe he knows something about the legendaries?
Alternately, some people were saying that maybe Leon isn’t actually a great champion, and his fights are rigged in his favor by the chairman. /If/ that were the case, I bet that Leon is actually unhappy with that situation and wants to make the tournament more fair.
Or maybe everything in the game is exactly as it seems ;)
Nothing important here, I just like this screenshot. I wonder if Fletchling are native to Galar too?
Tumblr media
My first Pokemon! (in this game, at least...) I picked Sobble because he’s the most endearing.
Tumblr media
My first battle! I like how the interface is laid out, and how detailed the background is beyond the fighters - you can even see Leon standing there.
Tumblr media
My Pokemon's details. I don’t play competitively so I don’t know if it’s a particular “good” Sobble. It seems like this species is a fast special-attacker, so I’ll have to keep that in mind.
Tumblr media
The Slumbering Weald (my spellchecker doesn’t even recognize that word :) ) It’s very spooky and seclusive - and it’s right next to the starter town too! You’d think if it was really that dangerous, people would put up more than a flimsy wooden gate to keep trespassers out...Hop, of course, is an idiot and runs right into it; and I, the spineless protagonist, have no option to say no. >.>
Tumblr media
My first wild encounter! This starts the trend I noticed all during the opening hours of this game - most of the wild Pokemon are brand-new, totally-unrevealed species. Like this squirrel thing. (Although some people guessed we would get a new squirrel based on that shirt design). I wonder if it evolves?
Tumblr media
This part was actually pretty scary, with the Pokemon (I can’t remember its name...) suddenly appearing out of the fog. The Pokemon acted almost like a hologram in battle though - my attacks couldn’t touch it.
What if the twist is that the legendary wolf Pokemon are just illusions, perhaps even man-made ones created to keep intruders from discovering some secret in the forest?
Tumblr media
Anyway, we escape from the situation perfectly fine, because of course we do ;)
I noticed that this particular generation gives you quite of a bit of money at the start, but I guess that’s because you encounter the first boutique so early. There’s a fair number of affordable options too. Some of these Pokemon shirts I wish were /real/ shirts.
Tumblr media
My new look :) Mostly I just ditched the dress for jeans. This looks like a comfortable outfit, although that knapsack is a bit unwieldy.
Tumblr media
We visit the professor’s lab. She has a lot of books, plants, and a tea set. I wonder if she ever has problems with Polteageist?
Tumblr media
The new Pokemon center design. I love that the move deleter/relearner and nickname functions are all in one place - I always hated flying around the map trying to remember where they were.
That Pokemon behind the counter is another totally new one. Could this be a Galarian Audino?
Tumblr media
Using mystery gift, I was able to get this “Gigantamax” Meowth. However, due to my rule of only using Gen 8 Pokemon, it’s just gonna chill out in the box >.>
Tumblr media
Leon is very generous with Pokeballs. Even the items you find on the ground are generous, often containing 2 or 3 “copies” of an item when you check it out. Is that a new thing for Pokemon?
Tumblr media
Here I battle my first trainer that isn’t named Hop. He has that squirrel shirt and is a total pushover.
Tumblr media
Just chilling by the professor’s house. It looks like maybe you can only fish in fishing spots (those darker circles on the water), but at least you get your fishing pole right away.
Also, I discovered that while I could not sit on beds or chairs inside, I am able to sit on this bench :)
Tumblr media
The way the Pokemon mill about in the tall grass is very interesting. Some will try to avoid you, others like this Yamper will chase after you. It makes the routes feel a lot more populated.
Tumblr media
I guess this is Sonia’s room. It’s very pink. I wonder if she even /wants/ to do Pokemon research, or if she’d rather be a fashion designer or something.
Tumblr media
The in-game time of day doesn’t seem to match up with the Switch system clock, at least not from what I’ve seen so far. For example, suddenly it is sunset and I catch a falling star. (look how the reflection in the water changes :) )
Tumblr media
I haven’t decided yet if I want to buy the Switch online service, but in the meantime I decided to at least pick my profile picture. The icons you can choose from actually reveal quite a lot about the trainer classes and gyms that are in the game. For the first time ever, we have a Dark-type gym! Their logo is a sideways version of Team Yell’s logo - does that mean that Team Yell or Marnie is the Dark gym leader?
Tumblr media
I spent a while catching Pokemon around the professor’s house. I can’t tell if I got every possible species without looking online, but I did build up a good roster.
I found it really cool how many new, surprising Pokemon showed up this early in the game. There’s the fox one (which is a Dark type and reminds me of Zoroark), the turtle one (which has got to be a pre-evolution of Dreadnaw, probably the 1st of 3 stages), the bird one (based on the “Rook” in its name and the fact that it learns Dark-type moves early, I’m guessing it’s a pre-evolution of Corviknight), and the bug one (can’t wait to see what its final stage looks like).
I went through the party to find the best Pokemon that fit my self-imposed rules (only new, Gen 8 Pokemon, no overlap of types). I know that this means I won’t be able to use Galarian forms or Gigantamaxes of old Pokemon, but just because I’m not using them in my main playthrough doesn’t mean I can’t catch them :)
Tumblr media
Next time: I step onto the train and leave my home behind.

[A contribution (in conjunction with @askbarnum) to FanFicFeb on @theothersidediscord for Prompt #22 (Retail). Edited from the live version, which concluded on server last week.]
Carlyle
shuffles into office and pulls off fluffy woolen lambswool hood with a sigh of relief
These costumes were a brilliant idea, but perhaps more ventilation next time? I felt more like roasted mutton than a spring lamb by the end of that greeting session.
Barnum
Discomfort is necessary. Did you see how happy it made all of the children? Some of the adults too.
Unbuttons a few buttons at the front of his bunny costume to let in some air. Pulling off the ears and dragging his fingers back through his sweaty hair with a grin
O'Malley told me the sugar eggs with the little elephants we've been selling have entirely sold out. And you told me it was a terrible idea.
Carlyle
I was referring to your insisting on taste testing so many of them, if you recall. You were actually twitching like a real rabbit.
Barnum
Had to make sure they were of good quality. Only the best for our customers. I am a responsible retailer.
Wanders around the side of his desk, drumming his hands on the wood excitably
...Maybe after the fifth one I was just being greedy. I think I have a problem.
People love anything with an elephant on, though. We should put more into marketing this. Elephant shoes, Elephant hats, Elephant scarves for the ladies. Statues and toys, maybe snow globes?
Carlyle
peels rest of costume off hastily, rolling up shirtsleeves and slumping into a chair
Little wooden toys that roll around on a string maybe. And that can attach to each other so they can have their own parade of elephants. ...no more walking sticks, though. I hear people are using your likeness for untoward purposes.
Barnum
Leaves his own costume as is, but kicks off his boots to let his feet air out and starts pacing up and down the office
Wooden toys would be perfect! Write that down! What about little wooden carriages they can attach to them? Lots of different detachable animals. A zoo drawn carriage toy. We could have little wooden circus dolls for the children too, put them out on show for the Wednesday evening shows when all the richer folk bring their spoiled kids. Sell all of the pieces separately . I've been considering toffees, but in the shape of my head.
Pauses and frowns thoughtfully
...What possible untoward purposes can one use a cane for?
Carlyle
opens mouth to explain, stops, starts again
I wasn't given exact details. But I did see Fedor using one as a croquet mallet the other day. Just how many of those did you expect to sell anyway?
Barnum
Chuckles to himself and resumes pacing.
It seemed like a good idea at the time. And we have sold three of them! Even if two of those sales were the troupe. How about masks? Masks of my face. For the kids!
Carlyle
gets a faraway look
Might be sort of distracting... confusing... to have multiples of your face in the audience while trying to do a show. Not to mention their being used for satirical purposes. Perhaps animal masks?
Barnum
Hm I suppose you're right, I wouldn't want anyone committing crimes with my face on. The police already aren't my biggest fans. Perhaps we should market you a little more. Those hand sized wooden dolls I had made of you have already sold out, people seem to prefer them to the one of me. Strangely a lot of young women are buying them, perhaps they make good pieces to decorate the mantel piece.
Carlyle
frowns at the mention of the dolls
It's because you insisted on designing them with changeable costumes. They are taking the clothes off mine to use on the Anne doll. That's the only reason I can deduce. Maybe more wardrobe options for them? For what it's worth, we can put the one of you on our mantelpiece if you'd like.
Barnum
Rolls his eyes
No no, if it's too undesirable for the public then it is too undesirable for the house.
Takes his hat off to play around with the rim, needing something to do with his hands while he paces
What do you think of an indoor section of the stalls just for the adults. We could have our own brand of whisky, people would surely enjoy the show even more with a few drinks in them, perhaps they'd part with their wallets a little more too.
Pauses, throwing his hands up dramatically as if having an enlightened moment
Lingerie. With my face on it.
Carlyle
turns a shade more pink than before
I don't think we want to become known as an establishment that sells unmentionables. I can look into the licensing required for a small bar, though. And I will have you know that there is nothing undesirable about your dolls, it must surely be a costuming issue. Why, I have at least four of your dolls and just one of mine. For planning out show logistics, that is.
Barnum
Nonsense, my costume is far more interesting than yours.
Waves a hand at him and paces over to the window, leaning on the ledge with his palms and focusing his stare on the people below
We could do with some carnival games too. Con ones, you know, the type people have fun with but never win.
Carlyle
frowns
You can't just outright rig them, that's dishonest. Games of skill are difficult enough without that sort of thing.
glances down at the crowd
Perhaps putting Charles in that egg costume was a bad idea. I think those children are rolling him around.
Barnum
He deserves it, he put itching powder in my show trousers last week. He knew comeuppance was coming. Anne doesn't seem thrilled about her salmon costume either. She gave me quite a glare so I told her it was your idea. Have fun with that later.
Carlyle
That was a salmon costume? I thought it was meant to be symbolic of nature's bounty and the renewal of life?
Barnum
Granted she did look more like a tuna.
Begins pacing again
We should get more aquatic acts.
Carlyle
The sea lions are looking a bit lonely, true. Weren't you working out plans for an aquatic ring?
Barnum
It's on hold while the department of health and safety review my paperwork. I find it hard to believe that fire rings and trapeze artists are fine, but a glorified paddling pool gets people up in arms. How would you feel about wearing a mermaid tail?
Carlyle
...I might need more swimming lessons first, but if it's required for the show. What would you be wearing?
Barnum
You would have to be shirtless, for effect of course. I can help you practise your swimming. I was thinking I would wear a version of my usual outfit made of swimsuit material. Though I suppose if Anne does not want her salmon costume...
Carlyle
The scales are quite wonderfully iridescent, the effect is dazzling.
hears a few shouts down below and looks out to see the boys have succeeded in rolling Charles down a ramp and cracked open the egg costume
Good thing you insisted he wear that fluffy chick outfit underneath. Look at him run!
Barnum
Wipes a single tear from his eye as he watches
The circle of life is quite something, isn't it? Truly majestic.
Carlyle
sighs and pulls lamb costume back on
All the same, I'd best do some crowd control before they catch him. There's some extra bags of candy to refill your basket in the cupboard.
trots out the door to intercept the fleeing chicken
Barnum
Hang on, I'm not letting you out there alone dressed as a lamb. That is just asking for a fight. Wait for me.
Pulls back on his boots and jogs after him
When we get back I need help getting this bunny suit off. Can't run in this thing.

Tested: 2021 Jeep Gladiator Overland Packs An Off-Road Punch

Tested: 2021 Jeep Gladiator Overland Packs An Off-Road Punch
There are two stories here. One is a test of a 2021 Jeep Gladiator, and the second is the outfitting of that Gladiator by a company who specializes in customizing not only the Gladiator but a mess of other manly trucks – RMT Overland.
But first, the Jeep itself.
2021 Jeep Gladiator Overland
This was my first Gladiator, and a welcome one. I’ve been eyeballing this pickup since it was introduced last year, lusting after the ones I saw on the street and in parking lots and wanting to get behind the wheel, but I was bopping around the country most of last year and never got to it.
2021 Jeep Gladiator Overland
As soon as my test Gladiator Overland arrived, all shiny black like a model T and square like the vehicles of the 1930s, I knew we would get along, though I never did master the art of getting in and out of the vehicle gracefully.
To enter during the 10-day test, I used my right hand to grab the steering wheel and pull myself inside, landing bulls-eye in the driver’s seat, then straightening my 5’8 self out. To exit, I put my feet out the door, grabbed whatever was in reach with my right hand, launched and aimed my feet so they could take the same blow at the same time. It wasn’t a problem – I had fun with it.
2021 Jeep Gladiator Overland
Inside, the first thing you see is this little view through the little windshield, just like the Willys Jeep my late father taught me to drive on at age 4. So far so good.
2021 Jeep Gladiator Overland
Started it up, left the driveway and the Jeep hurtled left and right like a horse testing its owner until he’s got a good grip on the reins and lets the hoss know who’s boss. I yanked ‘er straight and proceeded.
The tires are 37 inches – enormous – and immediately you just want to run over stuff. A stream to your right? Down you go. A pesky pavilion in a mall late at night, requiring you to drive ¼ of a mile if you want to turn around? Nahh. Over you go, bumpity bump, far out. How old are we?
2021 Jeep Gladiator Overland
The downside of huge tires, of course, is that at highway speed, you think you’re doing 60 but you look down and you’re doing 45. Slow is this machine’s forte. Slow in the snow. Snow over rocks. Slow in the neighborhood. Slow to squeeze a little more than 19 miles out of every gallon achieved by its 3.6 litre, 6-cylinder engine with an 8-speed transmission. “Forget it, Jake, it’s a Jeep.”
2021 Jeep Gladiator Overland
I didn’t let that stop me, though. I had the vehicle 10 days and I was in it every single day and night. I blasted through two tankfuls of gas. I didn’t go hardcore off road – but down a few ravines and over some shallow streams.
2021 Jeep Gladiator Overland
Why? Mostly because I’ve gone off-road many times in many different vehicles in upstate New York, Vermont, Arizona and elsewhere and find it best done with friends, all of you yukking it up. Physical pals are hard to come by in the pandemic. I also didn’t tow anything.
2021 Jeep Gladiator Overland
The brakes stopped me instantly. Visibility was adequate. The backup camera was first-rate. The sound system, which includes Apple and Android adaptability, is awful despite playing with the EQ and moving the sound back and forth between the front and rear.
With all options but not the Overland trim, the final MSRP of this Gladiator was $46,405.
Now – to the Overland experience. Here’s what you get:
2021 Jeep Gladiator Overland
I did not use the available side-mounted water and gas containers – didn’t need to.
2021 Jeep Gladiator Overland
I didn’t open the tent mounted on the rear roof of the vehicle, either, as it was 20 degrees a lot of days I had the vehicle. What I took advantage of were the custom-tuned FOX Performance Elite 2.5 shocks, the 3.5” JKS Suspension lift system and the BF Goodrich Mud-Terrain KM3 Tires. With the Overland, these accoutrements are installed and ready to go, meaning you can go and pick up your vehicle and drive straight to the woods.
2021 Jeep Gladiator Overland
I also loved feeling unique whenever I went. When you drive a Jeep, you see them all over the place. But I never saw another Overland. Finding it in parking lots was a snap. Photographically speaking, it doesn’t have a bad side, and the customization makes it all the more handsome.
And who are these RMT Overland folks?
They started out in 1978 as an OEM vehicle upfitter offering unique top-of-the-line specialty vehicles nationwide. As “overlanding” took off, the company developed “a stout lineup of overlanding trucks that are turn-key ready,” and here we are.
Your rig features exclusive RMT components such as bed racks, high-clearance front bumpers, custom color-matched accents and hood mounted light and accessory brackets, and more, much more.
2021 Jeep Gladiator Overland
What’s attractive, especially to the beginning off-roader, is that your unit comes ready – you don’t have to stand there and say “I want this, I want that” and the bill just keeps getting higher and higher until you’re paying what you might pay for a Mercedes G-class.
2021 Jeep Gladiator Overland
If you’ve got the coin and the commitment, this may be your Jeep. RMT Overland takes their customization seriously, and they do it at the top level. I don’t think I’ll be able to ever test an ordinary Gladiator after this experience without wishing I had these tires, these shocks, that skid plate, those water containers, that tent, and this performance.

jaune is from a family of assassins
felix from red vs. blue was killed by tucker who led the blue team and junipers can be blue which is the name of jaunes team while rubys are red.
in red vs. blue (the show monty had his hands in before rwby) felix( a mercenary/assasin) was killed by tucker Felix is a sociopath who just can’t wait for the killing to start so he can get some fun and he fights a redhead with green eyes at some point in the story. Then he gets killed by a butt monkey (tucker ) who wields a sword and proves to be an actually good leader too of a team thats themed off of blue . juniper (the name of the team jaune leads ) is blue tucker has many parallels with jaune. also another reference to red vs. blue is the fact that rubys are obviously red so the two main teams of rwby names are the colors of the two teams of red vs. blue (ones red and ones blue) so the food fight that team rwby and team jnpr could be called red vs. blue another shoutout. (he is a sadist who deceived the reds and blues and mocked them for it saying his role was a performance of a lifetime saying killing is better than anything money can buy) tucker was forced into a leadership role and had grown over the seasons of red vs. blue his sill had grown ( like how jaunes sill had grown over the volumes has shown a desire to pass it off leadership due to being afraid his decisions will doom others like jaune had issues with self worth and his abilities plus tucker pretended to be a ldies man lie how jaune pretended to be one with that line that ladies love his name so I think jaune will kill mercury ( son of an assassin/mercenary)mercury outright killed people on screen and from what I see enjoys the thought of it and was the person who committed the first two kills in the series
“Felix is a sociopath who just can’t wait for the killing to start so he can get some fun and he fights a fiery redhead with green eyes at some point in the story. Then he gets killed by a butt monkey who wields a sword and proves to be an actually good leader too. . “
felix was outlines with orange while he had a partner outlined with green
https://68.media.tumblr.com/c8f58d57e82aa998b677f7db0548219d/tumblr_inline_on34h2sjwB1sg3o5d_400.png
so their outfits make you think of felix and loc ust who were partners though locust was more moral.
and if jaune is from a family of assasins well this would serve as a foil to mercury who was abused by his assasin father since he was cared for by his assasin family
plus miles luna is and monty oum was a hunter x hunter fan https://twitter.com/themilesluna/status/375800879183450112?lang=en
and one of the main characters had an assassin family (his father tried to manipulate him by gettingh him to promise that if he didnt keep it he would come back when the father believed that things were rigged to his favor and ensure that he would come back to the home but it failed(vague) and didnt know about nen the equivalent to semblances and aura of rwby in hunter x hunter until the hunters exam like what jaune did except a bit different in circumstances like how killua only found out about it in the tower when he was younger he was tasked to get to a certain level where the ne users are and he could have been crippled by it
http://ofdustandpotions.tumblr.com/search/jaune%20mistral
my first point was getting around the technicality that jaune was from the same kingdom as pyrrha. qrow actually said it himself- this kingdom is huge. extremely varying climates, extremely varying cultures. jaune and pyrrha could’ve easily both been from there, and jaune never mentions where he’s from.
secondly, one of my weaker points is that mistral was a hub for the arts, and jaune is one of the only people in the show (bar weiss and possibly ren) who has an interest in the arts- namely, dancing. if he were to pick that up anywhere, the best bet would be mistral
thirdly, mistral is supposed to have a black market and is a huge criminal hub. jaune “got his hands” on transcripts, and so far we don’t know how (bc why explain that when u can have hell prom) but the black market there is the perfect explanation. jaune managed to scrape up the lien, either because his family were well off (which i HIGHLY doubt), he worked for it (note he said “he got his hands on” instead of “someone gave me them”) or he got the money illegally too. “
Consider: Jaune is shady, Tyrian said he was interesting, Jaune looked absolutely terrified at that… We know that Jaune’s family has a /history/ of Hunters but that doesn’t tell us anything about the current state of his family. What if his WHOLE family is involved with the Mistral black market?
it would be interesting if jaunes father was responsible for summer roses death. and one of the team WTch or salem hired him to kill summer rose.
also
https://www.reddit.com/r/RWBY/comments/1r7h2i/jaune_symbol_a_rainbow/ Monty, Kerry, and Miles said that Jaune’s symbol is not two moons but actually a rainbow. image
that symbol is the symbol that was on crocea mors so it would be his great grandfather/familys symbol since weiss showed it was possible for a family to havea symbol that they each have I mean weiss and winter both have a snowflake as a symbol
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbows_in_mythology
In Greek mythology, Iris is the personification of the rainbow and a messenger linking the gods to humanity. Iris is frequently mentioned as a divine messenger in the Iliad. She carries a caduceus or winged staff. Iris’s messages often concerned war and retribution
so iris the goddess of rainbows is sometimes portrayed as a messenger. and mercurys inspiration is the god of messengers mercury/hermes. and mercury is aan assassin
and jaunes partner was pyrrha nikos who was based on achilles from GReek mythology. and it would fit for that as a reference there will be a connection to greek mythology
so it would fit for jaunes family to be assassins given that fact
Arc family not being that known, but supposedly did great acts…
Tyrian interested in Jaune…
Arc criminal family theory intensifies, after all some great acts are truly terrible.
According to Genesis, after Noah saved the animals from the Great Flood, a rainbow appeared. As the flood had killed all other living beings, the rainbow came to symbolise God’s promise that he would never send another flood to destroy all of the earth and that never again would all living things be killed in the waters of a flood.
and this is from the bible and jaunes inspiration is a catholic saint
fun fact joan of arcs real name as in the real way you pronounce it is jeanne D'arc which is the “Apostrophes were never used in fifteenth-century French surnames, which sometimes leads to confusion between place names and other names that begin with the letter D. Based on Latin records, which do reflect a difference, her father’s name was more likely Darc.” “To further complicate matters, surnames were not universal in the fifteenth century and surname inheritance did not necessarily follow modern patterns. ” https://rwby-fan-theories.tumblr.com/post/154771163345/jaune-arc-isnt-jaunes-real-name-its-jaune-darc-or
It fits with Joan of Arc’s story too
“Joan of Arc did not come from a place called Arc, but was born and raised in the village of Domrémy in what was then the northeastern frontier of the Kingdom of France.”
“Apostrophes were never used in fifteenth-century French surnames, which sometimes leads to confusion between place names and other names that begin with the letter D. Based on Latin records, which do reflect a difference, her father’s name was more likely Darc.”
“To further complicate matters, surnames were not universal in the fifteenth century and surname inheritance did not necessarily follow modern patterns. Joan of Arc testified at her trial that the local custom in her native region was for girls to use their mothers’ surname. Joan’s mother was known both as Isabelle Romée and Isabelle de Vouthon. No surviving record from Joan’s lifetime shows that she used either her mother’s or her father’s surname, but she often referred to herself as la Pucelle, which roughly translates as the Maiden.”
With this info on Joan, it could very well be that Jaune also does not have Arc as his true last name.
jaunes real last name could possibly jaune darc and  it would explain why no one mentioned how jaune came from a line of heroes other than jaune

Dark matter experiment's central component takes a deep dive—nearly a mile underground

Q: How do you get a 5,000-pound, 9-foot-tall particle detector, designed to hunt for dark matter, nearly a mile underground?
A: Very carefully.
Last week, crews at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in South Dakota strapped the central component of LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) – the largest direct-detection dark matter experiment in the U.S. – below an elevator and s-l-o-w-l-y lowered it 4,850 feet down a shaft formerly used in gold-mining operations.
This final journey of LZ’s central detector on Oct. 21 to its resting place in a custom-built research cavern required extensive planning and involved two test moves of a “dummy” detector to ensure its safe delivery.
“This was the most challenging move of a detector system that I have ever done in decades of working on experiments,” said Jeff Cherwinka, the LZ chief engineer from the University of Wisconsin, who led the planning effort for the move along with SURF engineers and other support.
Jake Davis, a SURF mechanical engineer who worked on the cryostat move, said, “Between the size of the device, the confines of the space, and the multiple groups involved in the move, the entire process required rigorous attention to both the design and the scheduling. Prior to rigging the detector under the cage, we did testing with other cranes to see how it would react when suspended. We also completed analysis and testing to ensure it would remain nice and straight in the shaft.”
He added, “The ride was slow, right around 100 feet per minute. The ride to the 4,850-foot level typically takes 13-15 minutes. Today, it took close to 45 minutes. I rode in the cage, watching it through an inspection port in the floor. There was a huge sigh of relief after the move, but there’s still a lot of work ahead to finish LZ.”

Theresa Fruth, a postdoctoral research fellow at University College London who works on LZ’s central detector, said that keeping LZ well-sealed from any contaminants during its journey was a high priority—even the slightest traces of dust and dirt could ultimately affect its measurements.
“From a science perspective, we wanted the detector to come down exactly as it was on the surface,” she said. “The structural integrity is incredibly important, but so is the cleanliness, because we’ve been building this detector for 10 months in a clean room. Before the move, the detector was bagged twice, then inserted in the transporter structure. Then, the transporter was wrapped with another layer of strong plastic. We also need to move all our equipment underground so we can do the rest of the installation work underground.”
The central detector, known as the LZ cryostat and time projection chamber, will ultimately be filled with 10 tons of liquid xenon that will be chilled to minus 148 degrees Fahrenheit. Scientists hope to see telltale signals of dark matter particles that are produced as they interact with the heavy xenon atoms in this cryostat.
The liquid form of xenon, a very rare element, is so dense that a chunk of granite can float atop its surface. It is this density, owing to the heavy atomic weight of xenon, that makes it a good candidate for capturing particle interactions.
The cryostat is a large tank, assembled from ultrapure titanium, is about 5.5 feet in diameter. It contains systems with a total of 625 photomultiplier tubes that are positioned at its top and bottom (see a related article). These tubes are designed to capture flashes of light produced in particle interactions.
Pawel Majewski of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in the U.K., who led the design, fabrication, cleaning, and delivery of LZ’s inner cryostat vessel for the U.K. Science and Technology Facilities Council, said, “Now it is extremely gratifying to see it … holding the heart of the experiment and resting in its final place in the Davis Campus, one mile underground.”
LZ is designed to hunt for theorized dark matter particles called WIMPs, or weakly interacting massive particles. Dark matter makes up about 27 percent of the universe, though we don’t yet know what it’s made of and have only detected it through its gravitational effects on normal matter.

It is 100 times more sensitive than its predecessor experiment, called LUX, which operated in the same underground space. Placing LZ deep underground serves to shield it from much of the steady bombardment of particles that are present at the Earth’s surface.
LZ’s cryostat will be surrounded by a tank filled with a liquid known as a scintillator that will also be outfitted with an array of photomultiplier tubes and is designed to help weed out false signals from unwanted particle “noise.” And the cryostat and scintillator tank will be embedded within a large water tank that provides a further buffer layer from unwanted particle signals.
While LUX’s main detector was small enough to fit in the SURF elevator, LZ’s cryostat narrowly fit in the elevator shaft.
It was first moved outside of a clean room at the surface level, picked up with a forklift, and carried into position below the elevator cage. It was then attached to the underside of the cage with slings and straps, where it was slowly moved down to the level of the Davis Cavern, its final resting place.
Once detached from the elevator cage, it was moved using air skates on a temporarily assembled surface—akin to how an air hockey puck moves across the table’s surface. Because of the cryostat’s size, crews had to first temporarily remove underground duct work to allow the move.
Murdock “Gil” Gilchriese, LZ project director and a physicist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab), said, “Next, the cryostat will be wrapped with multiple layers of insulation, and a few other exterior components will be installed.” Berkeley Lab is the lead institution for the LZ project.
“Then it will get lowered into the outer cryostat vessel,” he added. “It will take months to hook up and check out all of the cables and make everything vacuum-tight.” Most of the LZ work is now concentrated underground, he said, with multiple work shifts scheduled to complete LZ assembly and installation.
There are plans to begin testing the process of liquefying xenon gas for LZ in November using a mock cryostat, and to fill the actual cryostat with xenon in spring 2020. Project completion could come as soon as July 2020, Gilchriese said.
