hi i think its rlly nice that, despite what Misty's been through, she keeps a mostly positive mindset and keeps trying to make friends. and i think its underdiscussed when it comes to them

misty is known as being tragic and sad and lonely, and while this is true, they also try to stay optimistic. despite their past with Barnacle Bessie and other suits, they continue trying to reach out and make friends.

When the toons first approach her in her battle, she invites them to learn Ip Dip with her. And at the end of her battle, she says she "hopes to share that pain with someone like you". She remains hopeful for friendship and connection despite what she's endured.

But i think this persistence can also be very harmful when she's desperate for that connection, shown through her relationship with William. They haven't left him alone, to the point he's claiming to have been harassed and stalked by them. Misty's desperation for friendship and connection has caused them to hurt other people, and I dont think that should be ignored either.

Misty deserves friendship like any other, but the way she goes about it can be harmful to both herself and the people around her. But her desperation also makes sense when you see how often she is turned down and rejected, for reasons she doesn't seem to understand (hence lines like, "I've done nothing wrong" and "I want to be friends with you toons. I don't see why it can't happen". They don't seem to fathom why toons and suits cannot be friends, despite the obvious war going on. They're very focused on themselves and the pain they've endured that they fail to pay attention to OTHERS' pain. Others like the toons and William.)

where do you see piandao fitting into your ever-expanding modern highschool au? he's honestly one of my favourite minor (non-gaang) characters to be honest

i mean obviously piandao is some kind of mentor figure to sokka. i think he sort of fills the hole hakoda leaves in his absence (which is its own complicated thing that i don’t have time to get into rn). they would meet earlier than in canon. he’s probably an english teacher.

at first he thinks sokka is plagiarizing his papers because what kind of middle schooler knows how to cite articles they accessed from jstor, but eventually he realizes that sokka is simply not receiving enough enrichment in his enclosure and offers to give him personal classes where they’ll read more challenging books. and sokka agrees on the condition that he’s allowed to bring yue (because they’re codependent and do literally everything together) because he knows that she could also use more enrichment in her enclosure. so the three of them meet every saturday morning in the library to discuss paradise lost and the like every week for years.

and then yue dies, and sokka loses all interest in showing up to the library on a saturday morning when he could sleep in until 3 pm. and he kind of loses touch with piandao, because he’s in high school now, so he no longer sees him in the halls or has time for their extracurriculars. and piandao doesn’t really know how to make sokka feel better about his girlfriend/best friend in the entire world dying, because even if he may feel like it sometimes, he is not actually his father. so they just lose touch for years.

sokka goes to college, moves away, meets new people. but then one day, sokka is back home for a holiday or something, and he runs into piandao at the jasmine dragon (they’re both friends with iroh). and he’s just elated to see him again, there’s none of that awkwardness or despair that permeated all their interactions after yue’s death. they’re just happy to get the opportunity to catch up after all this time.

sokka’s like “i can’t believe you put up with me, i was such a dumb kid” and piandao doesn’t have the heart to tell him that the first essay sokka ever wrote for class was so brilliant that he assumed sokka had just straight up copy pasted the entire thing from a publication because sokka is still going on about how “english was always my worst subject, i’ve always been way more of a stem guy, katara is the real writer of the family, she’s actually a freelance journalist now, i’m so proud of her” blah blah blah “it was nice of you to humor me, though. i know yue really loved our sessions.”

at which point piandao bravely resists the urge to take sokka by the shoulders and shake him, and instead simply asks him, “so how’s grad school?”

im gonna be crazy for a sec. im dissecting zoro and sanjis genders.

zoro and sanji are so interesting to me. the two of them seemingly embody two different types of masculinity from two different perspectives, one of them being blinded by it, and the other being disillusioned to it. zoro's traditional, almost toxic masculinity, underlies a discomfort with the self in a picture of typical masculinity, yet he still inserts himself into it - and sanji's charade thereof implies he would rather be anything but, yet feels trapped in it like a cage. there's something distinctly trans flavoured for both of them, with zoro's feeling like a transmasculine bastardiation of what a "man" is supposed to be - it would make sense why him being told "women are weak" "women can't be swordsmen" makes him so upset, and why he never really has an answer for the "you were born a man" thing, since he really wasn't. he came unto the role early in his life and lived as such for as long as he could, and wound up down a bad streak of manhood. this streak is one that he can't fully understand how he wound up in, since he has the perspective of both sides, yet he only feels validated when performing to the utmost stereotype of a "strong man." zoro has snuffed out all femininity within himself, and has essentially blinded himself to that which once was. and with sanji, it's almost the opposite; you can already sort of tell traditional masculine roles don't fit him, and yet he performs most of them all the same just due to his upbringing, and the fact that he seems almost scared to be anything but masculine. his almost feels closeted. his own femininity is present, but often sidelined in favour of what others would want to see of him - and he does so because he cares, almost too much, about others. he is afraid of changing, since so much has happened to him already. so he almost has to play this balancing game, of what he wants and what others want of him. it probably weighs on him pretty deeply, yet his care for others mandates that he acts in accordance to what others see, not what he feels in himself. he has repressed that which makes him feminine for the most part. they both almost mirror each other, despite being on different paths; i feel their interpretations of their selves make for good foils for one another.

ah!

i realized i was aro bc i’ve been asked out three times by three seperate friends and i would always say yes with the mindset of “they’re my friend, it’ll be weird if i say no, and i want them to be happy” which was the first red flag — romantic relationships should be for the pleasure and benefit of BOTH people, not just one. it’s not a transaction; it’s supposed to be a mutual thing.

i kinda glossed over that because, again, they were my friends and i want to make them happy, and kind of tricked myself into thinking i liked them romantically because i liked being around them (there’s a difference between platonic love and romantic love that i didn’t know yet, but looking back, whatever i felt for them was definitely not romantic. just wanting to be around your friends because you like their company doesn’t have any romantic connotations, really).

i think at one point one of them kissed me and i did not like it. and that made me realize i didn’t like the relationship at all. and i had to sit with myself for a bit to realize why. im not gonna go into too many personal details but aromantic was the conclusion i came to. i wasn’t happy with it, but it fit. and eventually i’ve just come to accept that about myself :)

for joining the lmk art fandom? i’d just say draw what you like tbh. dont worry about appealing to people, your art is for you :)

once again thinking abt angela's realizations re: Yeah She Just Does That Sometimes Now(tm). like it certainly never gets as Bad as it was in canon, but on occasion something or other ends up manifesting without her really noticing. a slight singe at the ends of her gloves, a trail of flower petals, things like that. a "hey can you go check on angela, shes starting to track feathers everywhere again."
