i think one of my favorite things about ride the cyclone is ocean and noel’s dynamic.

like obviously they hate each other and it’s hilarious because of that alone.

but also! they really are COMPLETE opposites. from everything from their …idk what to call it.. Worldviews?? to the way they view themselves to their fuckin nail polish!! and i love that.

like in fall fair suite when ocean is yelling abt them dying and suing the fair and noel responds with what’s the point bc they’re dead.. same thing w the “carpe diem”/“c’est la vie” thing later on. and again,, just throughout the entire show. they have such VASTLY different outlooks on life and death and it’s truly fascinating to watch them interact.

also. everything noel says ocean has to say something on top of it. like when he’s talking to mischa abt talia and the whole LOVE CONQUERS ALL thing. like noel is the first to tell mischa not to find out what could’ve happened,, but then ocean jumps in and tries to clarify (rather needlessly ofc) and i find it so interesting that She’s the one who actually says the words “love conquers all” first. but then noel repeats it and That’s what mischa latches onto. (that’s another dynamic i could go on abt forever. nischa my beloved). like that’s just ocean trying to make herself look better but in the end it still just ends up benefitting noel.

also when noel’s doing his introduction and karnak stabs at his job and noel says the IDONTWANTTOSINGABT T H A T and NOT EVEN 2 SECONDS LATER ocean is literally Jumping at the idea of going again. like. bitch Calm Down..

another thing,, thinking abt how ocean doesn’t really say Anything about noel in what the world needs,,, and honestly that says more abt her thoughts on him than if she did yknow. she gives him 2 lines “sandwich artist” and “he’s never gonna breed”. i’ve already talked abt the sandwich artist one and how that’s just a low blow bc a) he worked at taco bell,, not an actual sandwich in sight b) he hated that job anyway.. but as for he’s never gonna breed. just the fact that That’s what ocean bases how Good it would be if noel were brought back to life says so much abt her.

bottom line: everything she does is So goddamn performative.

like legit directly after that when she’s saying all her I Love Yous to try and backpedal,, she literally just tells noel that she thinks he’s miserable (and not in the way he wants to be) and that he’s nothing like the stereotypes. (which i mean. at least there’s that ig but again,, not in a good way).

legit like. the only reason she doesn’t talk abt noel in wtwn more is bc she doesn’t wanna be Too Homophobic (girlie doesn’t wanna get canceled lol) so she just. doesn’t say anything.. and just. it shows you the type of person she really is.

as for noel,, i think it’s really interesting to see how he is genuinely a much nicer person than ocean. like they’re both so bitchy. but ocean has this fake Nice exterior while noel Is bitchy on the outside and That’s his fake side. again,, they’re perfect opposites!!

like look at how the First thing noel does after what the world needs is stick up for constance. or what i already said abt mischa/talia/love conquers all. even when he helps pin the cape on jane for her birthday. dude is just so fucking sweet i love him so much :)

ocean is nice on the outside but on the inside she’s a mean bitch,, and noel is a bitch on the outside but actually a really nice guy on the Inside :)

and ofc the Reasons for their different exteriors is a Lot too. ocean wanted to be likable and be the Best while deeply and genuinely believing she’s above everyone else while noel probably Had to cultivate that exterior because of how he was treated. dude was gay in a catholic school in the middle of nowhere. that’s like a recipe for disaster so no Wonder he’s the way that he is yknow. it’s part of his attempt at “blending in”-which is the saddest fuckin thing ive ever heard. mischa’s right. noel is tragic :/

actually it’s mostly about how my entire playlist for the road leading up to Philippi (after both Brutus and Cassius leave Rome after the assassination of Caesar) is Bastille’s Bad Blood album on repeat. I want their relationship to get messy. There’s another version of this scene that gets a lot more teeth to the subtext of the conversation, but I wanted to play around with it first before committing to like. room layouts. there was originally a couple of transitional panels before the last 2 because I wanted Brutus to really chew on this thought he has, but augh. stairs. didn’t feel like drawing those.

Finally finished my weird hanging painting thing (originally a secondhand partially-done 'paint by numbers' kit that I found at a thrift store and kept to repurpose lol)! Imagery somewhat based in my own worldbuilding projects, and text written in my constructed language for one of my fantasy species, but also vaguely inspired by old tapestries and illuminated manuscripts and etc. I've never been great at neat clean patterning or text, but it looks cool from afar, and I always enjoy making "props" or things that are somewhat like real objects that might could exist in my world. :0

Here's what it was originally! I probably didn't have to actually have a river running down the middle because it further makes the composition of the whole thing weird (various connected yet separate locations and things happening, instead of one unified event being portrayed), but I wasn't sure if I'd be able to fully cover up the already existing paint that was there.. and I can also kind of justify it by going with a more "all the imagery is just symbolic so it doesn't have to make exact sense" approach lol.. How is one half of the grass green and the other is suddenly snowy? shhhh.. it's not literal.. shhh...

Made a vague sketch, then painted over it, and then added more distinct lines in black pen. Center image first and border second.

The very last thing was the text, which actually took forever to translate because my conlang is still only like.. partially done, and some of the grammar is not worked out exactly how I would like it to be, so a few sentences I had to think about for a long time before just going "eh, this is probably not how I would do it if I considered it more, but I'll go with it for now" lol . I also am not entirely satisfied with all of the characters for the writing system, but again, it's good enough for a quick project, it doesn't have to be 100% accurate and perfect because it's a fake language that nobody knows anyway lol.

I thought about breaking down the text and translation here like I have for some of the tidbits of Avirrekava (the language) in things I've posted in the past, but I think it would take too long and is not interesting to anyone but me ghghj, so for the sake of getting the post out quickly, I shall not spend an hour typing All That lol.

The general jist of the writing though is that it's just about the Avirre'thel being cast out from the other elves, after abandoning their magic for immortality as a means to truly attain perfection (an important concept in elven culture), the usual, blah blah blah, but how it's Actually A Good Thing, because the gods are wrong and immortality is Cool actually and they like the shitty frozen lands they were sent to, so it's fine that everyone else is being a Hater about it lol

Lastly, here's a few photos outside in the sun to TRY and show the gold detailing actually shimmering or showing up! It really doesn't come through in photos, but there's plenty of little golden spots to highlight light or Importance.

Mostly the fire, the pink sparkle that represents magic, the red drop that represents blood, the light behind Inaashi's hands and head (common symbol for the elven religion/one of their main gods, shout out to anyone who read the ancient elven religion post and recognized that lol), the sun, and the symbol for the Avirre'thel/country of Navyete at the very top. I did a few other gold bits, but they're not highlighted because they're Significant, more just that it looked more symmetrical to have some gold on the border too lol.

Other things of note: The animals are not actually significant to Avirre'thel culture really, I just wanted to put a cat and a bird because I like them lol. (I also wanted to have a few funny looking creatures, as I was slightly trying to go with the 'in some old medieval painting the anatomy and perspective is very weird' vibe, though I think some of the other parts of it look too Normal to pull it off entirely). Same with the four leaf clover, which means nothing in their culture - but these are the only areas where stuff was just added self-indulgently .

Bligabata (giant cabbage that grows along rivers in Navyete) making an appearance! The architecture of the building IS based on actual concepts for ancient elven/older Avirre'thel architecture and metalwork. The Avirre'thel who's turning away from Inaashi/elves/magic and collecting blood, is doing so in a Special Bowl, as is part of their culture (collecting it in the hands, or just in a normal vessel would be disrespectful, they have Specific Bowls which is the only thing blood can be kept in, etc.).

The figure that represents Jhevona (and thus, a closer connection to magic, celestial imagery, etc.) is in weird ugly teal, which is not necessarily a color or design associated with them, as I don't have much common culture (like clothing) worked out for Northern Jhevona (who the avirre'thel would have come into contact with) yet, BUT everyone else is in more Typical colors (a northern elf in green, Inaashi in lavender + white + blue, an Avirre'thel in darker purples and reds).

Some things, like the four figures in the corners, and the two people + fish in the stream, do not currently have a meaning, but in-world they would.. Like, I could make up lore for how they're culturally significant and it would be true because I am god of the world, but I don't have anything currently. But just know.. they DO mean something, I just haven't decided it yet, maybe kind of fill in as I go, come up with a meaning later lol. Probably along the lines of an old myth from the ancient elven religion, a story, etc.

I don't know, probably other stuff, but that's my Trying To Keep It Short rambling for now lol. I'm just glad I finally finished this! For how vaguely sloppy it is up close (everything being completely freehanded, only used rulers once when doing the initial sketch and lining where the border should be + my hands are shaky + the canvas is bumpy + my handwriting is scratchy and terrible + etc. etc.) it still took a REALLY long time, even when not trying to make it all perfect. Especially if including the text translation + writing, which took like 3+ hours itself.

Maybe all the asymmetry/lack of things being centered is NOT because I was too lazy to measure anything, but is actually because in-universe, it's a practice illustration made by some young apprentice who has to work on little canvases for years before he can be trusted will a full sized mural or tapestry. It's his first week on the job! of course he's uncoordinated! don't laugh at him!!! lol

i think the sketch looks silly and goofy and funny so i find it important to share with you the mere presence of the faces i drew on it. i drew it on top of the boxes without staying inside its borders because i find my proportions can get wonky if i draw them cropped in a restricted space. and I feel trapped otherwise and i will draw BAD!!! give me spaceeeee to go wild!!!!

the head circles are there for emotional support

very low res speedpaint because truth is the canvas was much bigger than the space where my comic was placed. i didnt account when exporting my timelapse in 720px that that tiny space would look so pixelated ... but it's able to be percieved, so its okay.

(i will now comment on my process and it is not brief sorry)

usually i would try to clean up my sketches and figure out what goes on top before jumping into linework, but since there are multiple panels and drawings i chose to jump into inking right away for the sake of brevity. i just went in with a brush that uses pen pressure and drew what was needed. i added extra line thickness and contrast in areas around the face because it helps direct your eyes there more easily that way.

according to her equipment rei has a chain belt but i only remembered it existed once I was going to color, and i did not like that discovery... I chose to ignore it to maintain my peace. i already have the color palettes for these characters figured out, and i didnt really want to think about a new element at the moment www I tend to overthink those things a lot so i skipped it

the rest is rather straightforward! not that anything else wasn't, but in here i could turn my brain off and sing. linework and sketching require mumbling so i cannot turn my brain off. just block in the characters with a solid color so i can have a mask (something along those lines,) where the color can stay inside. then just color in !!!

Base colors just had slight cell shading on the skin, and for the hair i airbrush a bit of the skincolor in low opacity near the forehead... I'm not sure what it means, but i can look at the faces easier with it somehow. i like the gentle subtlety it adds even if you cant really tell. it makes things look nice.

background was just me blocking in the color of the wall and floor, shade the wall a bit, then slap a noise and free use wood texture on top. work smarter not harder ! yet it took a bit to make it look stylistically fitting with the characters, and even now i think bottom middle panel looks odd. whatever!!!

for the middle panel i thought itd be funny if the background was a solid silly and colorful one to contrast the next panel's sketchy black one. a contrast to how the word widow is seen. on that note my handwritting is not pointy. i gaslighted my hand into thinking that it was indeed pointy in that moment so i could write "not-yet dead person" in letters that didn't seem cute. my hand did not fall for it but it complied anyway

that's basically it! I'm not sure what else i could say that doesn't feel barebones because it really is that straightforward. if you're curious I used clip studio paint for this. only special brush used was for linework (a brush named Lemon Brush), the rest used were just the default. my computer gets the least credit. it was trying to convince me a 20mb file was going to nuke it all the time and hardly let me save multiple times so i do not appreciate it

I don't understand why people dump Eden and Whit into the same "nice character" category when like one is clearly a good person acting in earnest while the other one is at best putting up a front of happiness/being a jokester to hide their own depression.

I'm too tired to make a detailed comparison between Eden and Whit but like putting Eden next to Whit makes it so much more evident why Whit's kindness or positivity is flawed.

In a way Eden and Whit are opposites. Both are positive characters but one is acting in earnest while one is using it as a coping mechanism (or in the worst case scenario being deceitful about it).

It makes it even more obvious when what Teruko points out about Eden are things Whit is obviously suffering from. Yes, Eden does try to act strong and she needs to vent her emotions more but she isn't faking it.

I love the vocal nuance in this exchange, but also posting this for my differences posts because this is one of the changes that infuriates me the most. Yuri didn't threaten Ioder, did not threaten him with a weapon, and just said he'd punch him in a lazy, half joking voice (half joking as in, he really doesn't want to hear that - that's just his way of saying so; but that's not the voice of someone who is super angry and threatening).

My other huge grievance is that this is a recurring issue between them in the dub. Yuri is pretty much always vocally rude to Ioder. Ioder has done nothing to wrong him or anyone and has only ever done good for the people where he's able to.

Yet despite Ioder being nothing but sincere, honest and polite with Yuri, in fact even happy to see him here and there, dub Yuri is outright tonally rude to him leading right up this scene where he threatens Ioder in this dark voice. Meanwhile he's actually just supposed to be… lazily telling Ioder he'll punch him in his Yuri Lowell way of saying "I don't want to hear that".

The dub really just wanted to turn Yuri into this dark edgelord and I hate that for my goofy, silly boy.

This anon seems really into the idea of assigning Law and Cora some kind of nuclear family role when they just simply don't have that in canon. One of the most fascinating things about their relationship is how unlikely it actually was and yet they developed a bond that truly is special and hard to describe. They were never family, never saw themselves as family (outside of being in the DQ family) and yet Law loved Cora and continues to hold his memory close. Oda did an amazing job with them.

Honestly I think people take what they relate to, what they personally see or envision, or what they feel from relationships like the one Rosi and Law share. They already don't exactly have a nuclear family model, but it doesn't bother me when people see them as sharing something like a parent/child relationship. There are certainly elements of that bundled up in their relationship.

I couldn't imagine Law calling Cora "dad," for sure, though-- Law already HAS a father, and his father is dead. And I love the fact that they were under no obligation to love each other, too. Like you mentioned, they WEREN'T family. But they still loved each other, and shared the kind of relationship that most don't even find among their own blood-bound kin.
