Five (+1) overlooked photography related movies
Listed below are 4 movies “about fictional photographers” I think are superb but sadly overlooked and I explain why I recommend them. The last one is a documentary, but also sadly overlooked. And I mention one other film about fictional photographers briefly but did include the trailer because it is a superb, if forgotten, thriller.
Last Summer
A short, gentle, intensely languid, visually luxurious LGBTQIA+ coming of age story with sublime, swoon-worthy cinematography that exalts the everyday, this movie also features, funnily enough, the protagonist’s discovery of the art of photography with photos that mimic the cinematographer’s style and subject matter. What fascinates me is that photography becomes part of the story, yet there is no specialness about it. Photography, at least during the plot’s timeline, just becomes a way of life for the central character, a way of seeing and recording “last summer.”
Touching and photographically thought provoking.
NOTE: Depending on what country you live in, the full film may be available on Youtube. It is available now in the US, but there is no guarantee it will be left up.

Funny Face
Is anyone who follows me here, on Tumblr, surprised I included this one? After all, at least once every 6 months or so I post a clip from this film, one of my all time favorites.
Loosely based on the early career of Richard Avedon, who did the still photography for the film and was a technical advisor, this is a dreamy, romantic frolic full of great visuals and lovely fashions. I mean, come on, Edith Head AND Givenchy both are the designers for the film, and they both were nominated, as a team, for an Oscar. Mr. Givenchy was responsible for all of Hepburn’s looks and Ms. Head designed the costumes for the rest of the cast. (Here is a great article about the creative cinema relationship and friendship between Audrey Hepburn and Hubert de Givenchy.) Funny Face also has a sometimes annoying, anti-French intellectual bias, but at its core, the film is, paradoxically, a love song to Paris (“Bonjour Pareeeee”), French fashion, and the American fashion magazine industry.
Odd photography related coincidence re this film: Kay Thompson's magazine editor character is based on the real life fashion editor of Harper’s Bazaar at the time, Diana Vreeland, who would move on to become the fashion editor of Vogue and then the artistic director for the Costume Institute at the Met in NYC. (BTW, I think it is safe to say there would be no Dame Anna Wintour if there had not been a Diana Vreeland.) Vreeland discovered and/or nurtured the careers of many photographers, including Avedon, Penn, David Bailey. But the odd connection re Diana Vreeland and photography is that her grandson, Nicholas Vreeland, was a photographer who left his career and became a Buddhist monk. I recommend watching The Eye Has To Travel, about Ms. Vreeland, and A Monk with a Camera, about her Buddhist monk photographer grandson.
youtube
Roman Holiday
Yes, another Hepburn film that has photography as a central theme in the plot, and the way photography plays into the plot makes it relevant to much of the discussion of photographers’ rights and/or individual’s privacy. This is about the paparazzi before Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita introduced us to the character Paparazzo, the main photojournalist in that film.
And, a fashion note (let’s face it, most all of Hepburn’s films feature her wardrobe in a co-starring role), Edith Head designed all the costumes and won an Oscar (1 of 8 Oscars she won during her career) for this film.
youtube
NOTE: There is another Audrey Hepburn film with photography as part of the plot, though it is not a significant plot ingredient: Wait Until Dark. In this one, her husband is a photographer and it is his equipment, specifically one of the chemicals he uses for developing film, that plays a crucial role toward the end of the movie. Photography itself is not integral to the film. Also, interesting bit of irony here: She plays a blind woman married to a photographer. FYI, this film is not the typical elegant Audrey Hepburn movie; she and her husband live in a rather claustrophobic basement apartment (which works to the film’s advantage) a great setting for a nifty “lady in distress” thriller and Givenchy is not listed as Ms. Hepburn’s costume designer. (Actually, the credits at IMDB only list an art director, no costume designer.) Does anyone else remember going to see Wait Until Dark during its initial theatrical release and how they lowered the theater lights as much as possible for the last 8 minutes? Scared the shit outta me the 6 or 7 times I rewatched it at the theater, at the gorgeous old film house, the Olympia Theater in downtown Miami.
youtube
The Photograph
Smooth. Romantic. Great visuals and performances; the cast features Issa Rae, Lakeith Stanfield, Courtney B. Vance, Lil Rel Howery, Chanté Adams.
This movie is about the choice one woman made between her successful photography career and her romantic life and the story she tells her estranged daughter about those choices. This film uses gorgeous cinematography and photography to create and enhance and bring back to life the echoes of a famed fictional photographer’s career and life choices.
youtube
Over-Exposed
A mid-50s, not quite film-noir, low budget movie about a young woman who becomes a top photographer but gets in trouble because of her work, this is sometimes cheesy but also shows how she takes her profession seriously and how she learns her chosen trade. The section of the film about her apprenticeship as a professional photographer is fascinating and is, far as I know, the only time the learning process is depicted in a movie.
Of course, the issue of her sex, of her being a woman (and a beautiful one), complicates her efforts at getting work as a photographer. The way she gets photography work eventually gets her into trouble with the law and is caused, in part, by her good looks.
That said, be careful what assumptions you make about how she gets to the top, becoming a famed fashion photographer. Note that in the film, the lead character is depicted as intelligent, strong willed, talented, and beautiful. Though her beauty is central to the story, her other qualities are more prominent.
Much better than I expected, though it is also very much a film of its time.
NOTE: Depending on what country you live in, the full film may be available on Youtube. It is available now in the US, but there is no guarantee it will be left up.
youtube
Faces Places (Visages Villages)
I cannot believe classic feminist French film director Agnes Varda’s Faces Places (co-directed/created with photographer JR) is not in articles about movies related to photography. This film is a cinematic journal of a wildly creative photography road trip adventure undertaken by the them in 2017.
While they go about working on their photo project, they also share about their professional and personal lives. Ms Varda gives some insights into her career and her marriage to Jacques Demy. There are poignant moments and moments of humor, joy. And the visuals, both photography and cinematography, are stunning.
This film is about life and creativity and aging and friendship and just watch the fucking movie, ok?
Watch all of them.

I've been part of a big discussion elsewhere about Rings of Power and the liberties they've taken with Tolkien's canon. As part of that, I posted this timeline (SA = Second Age, TA = Third Age).
To be clear, I don't particularly care about the timeline itself. I have never been one of those to say that nobody can change canon at all. In fact, I haven't seen anyone take that position. Here are some things that are fine with me, and AFAICT with most other hard-core Tolkien fans.
I welcome changes that improve representation of women (Arwen, Tauriel, Galadriel) or Black people (Arondir), gay people, whatever. Tolkien was a man of his time, but also a decent man. I believe that, had he lived longer, he might well have approved such changes or even made them himself.
I also don't mind if characters are omitted (Glorfindel and especially Tom Bombadil) or added (Adar) or given new names/identities (Halbrand, The Stranger) in ways that don't significantly affect the history of Middle Earth as already known.
I don't even mind some kinds of timeline changes. Should Elendil have been alive at the same time as Celebrimbor? Well, no, but it doesn't really matter.
What I do mind is changes that harm the narrative - either Tolkien's or their own or too often both. Some events have a cause-and-effect relationship, so reordering them leads to a nonsensical result. Some characters have thematically important natures, so putting them in situations contrary to that nature is also nonsensical. It's particularly crazy to be bringing in Third Age elements when the Second Age is already far too big and busy for a single series (what I consider to be RoP's "original sin" from which most others flow). Here are some more examples.
It doesn't make sense for Gandalf or Saruman to be in Middle Earth before the events that caused the Valar to send them (Sauron's Third Age rise in opposition to Arnor and Gondor).
Ditto for barrow wights in this time period (hinted at in teasers for episodes I haven't seen myself yet). The wights were canonically princes of Cardolan, reanimated and/or possessed by the Witch King of Angmar. Cardolan didn't even exist until the Third Age, and even in RoP's own timeline the Witch King doesn't (can't) exist yet, so again this makes no sense.
Portraying the Fall of Numenor before the creation of the rings is not only gratuitous (just an excuse for some CGI) but it's also going to make it very difficult to tell the full story - which BTW includes Sauron as a prisoner - later even in RoP's own timeline. I'd like to see that story, so that's a loss.
Having Tom Bombadil tutor Gandalf (also hinted at in spoilers) changes both characters into something else entirely. Gandalf was already thousands of years old and should need no such tutoring; his amnesia was already an unnecessary creation within RoP. Tom, to the extent that he's anything more than a last vestige of the Hobbit writing style, is an enigma intentionally placing himself above and beyond such worldly concerns. He is almost the anti-Istari so having him help one is just silly.
By making these changes, and many more, the RoP folks have made a muddled mess. It's the same mistake David Lynch made in his 1984 version of Dune, which was widely and rightly panned for ham-fistedly trying to cram much into too small a space. Amazon's changes not only do a disservice to Tolkien's canon, but they're degrading their own as well.
Another thing that infuriates me about this is the hypocrisy of the Tolkien estate. For decades, Christopher (Rot In Piss) and his successors have ruthlessly quashed any retelling of stories in Tolkien's world. I used to play LotR Online, which suffered under this yoke for years. I'm aware of multiple fanfic authors who were legally threatened for having dared to mention one thing in that canon. Then the estate turns around and approves a project that puts the entire history of Middle Earth in a blender? No, I do not accept such double standards. This is all a huge money grab, pure and simple.
I know that other people would draw the lines differently than I do. They would accept things that I don't, and vice versa. That's all fine. Live and let live, as I always say. I'm watching and enjoying the series, just as I have enjoyed others (e.g. Wheel of Time) that are inspired by Tolkien but not set in his world. But I also think I should be allowed to notice and have my own opinions about those things too. Apparently the RoP stans disagree. Literally all of the gatekeeping and all of the vitriol in these discussions have come from that direction. Even the worst Tolkien purists I've ever met accept that he had his flaws as a writer, and that adaptation to a new medium in a new time means some changes. They're not the problem; it's the people who think RoP takes precedence over Tolkien's own vision who are the problem.

Actually makes me so upset looking up YouTube and Twitter in the Doctor Who and David Tennant tags and seeing so many transphobes and bigoted losers complain about the latest specials being "woke" over that small scene of Fourteen asking the Meep its pronouns and the metacrisis resolution between Donna and Rose.
It's actually so disheartening, seeing so many people missing the fucking point of Doctor Who, and these are also the same people who shat on Jodie's entire run bc BWAAAA, WAHMAN NO BE DOCTOR!!1!1! and lord knows what's gonna happen when Ncuti's run finally begins and what he'll have to endure with these bigoted losers with a huge ass victim complex. Doctor Who is a show that has been vocally anti-fascist since the beginning with episodes reflecting the UK recovering from the effects of WWII with the Daleks being a metaphor for Nazis, feminism, or hell, even episodes in the new run of Doctor Who way back when it started in 2005 talking about themes of slavery, government corruption, and even subtle LGBT+ themes with Jack Harkness being an openly flirtatious bisexual, Bill Potts being openly lesbian, and hell, even Martha being the first black companion in Doctor Who history (Bill being the second). Not to mention the Twelfth Doctor, who these "fans" claim they stopped watching the show after he regenerated but completely gloss over this fact, sucker punching a racist who was harassing Bill. Not to mention the Doctor as a whole character growing more love and empathy with every new regeneration and not being afraid to emotionally express themselves with love instead of having to hide it, something these "fans" fail to have or even see and understand. So yeah, your "pwecious wittle show" has always been this way, believe it or not!!
And I am SO tired of seeing posts of these bigots asking how much David Tennant got paid for saying that pronoun line or even seeing dumbass video thumbnails of David Tennant saying stupid shit like "RIP DOCTOR WHO" when these assholes gloss over the fact that not only would his character (or any incarnation of the Doctor in general) would HATE these types of people, but also David in general. This whole year, he has been openly showing his support for the LGBT+ community, ESPECIALLY trans and nonbinary folks, between pride pins, the "Leave Trans Kids Alone" shirt, and even voicing his support at certain conventions. AND not to mention his lips were on Michael Sheen in the last season of Good Omens this summer (and his character being a genderfluid demonic entity similar to the Doctor) AND even WAY before that (Richard II) AND playing a trans woman A WHOLE 3 decades ago WAY BEFORE his Doctor Who fame. So no, he wasn't paid to do this shit, he's been doing this for FREE, which is what it costs y'all to not be an asshole. And, not to boast, but when I met him at New York Comic Con last month, I felt so safe around him even with just those few moments when I met him. He's the most kind, humble, gentle hearted soul on this planet and basically the only celebrity I stan bc of all this, so no, I don't think he would support your ideals bc you're just sad and pathetic chronically online cry babies that never felt a touch of a real person.
So fucking tired of dudebros feeling like they're entitled to their "pwecious wittle show" over being "woke" (which BTW, that word has been so overused to death, I don't even think these people know what it even means anymore and just use it as a meaningless insult) when really, they're just coping and seething over the fact that this show ain't for them and wanna be angry for the sake of being angry. So by all means, fuck off and take your anger elsewhere bc we clearly don't need it and it's making me and every other sane fan uncomfortable with your unprovoked anger. It's a trend that I've seen grow between this fandom, the Star Wars fandom, or any other geek-centric fandom online ever since Trump was in power, and it's really sad to see this type of bigotry grow in fan spaces like this. Y'all are better than this, get some help.
#sammy rambles#sammy rants#doctor who spoilers#'oh sammy just ignore it!' nah man i'm pissed. and i have and tried to laugh it off with these losers being losers and now it's just.. ugh.#bonus food for thought: “they're forcing it down our throats!!1!1!1!” good!! hope y'all fucking choke on it too!!!#not bothering to put a read more on this i'm fucking pissed#doctor who#david tennant

yea like i be surprised if noah gets work he's still at penn from what i know also, but honestly winona is talking about retiring and maybe doing a few side projects i think same with david but joe i def think he's gonna go far with his music, nat and charlie doing few sides but honestly i also think millie is just done after this also like she's been saying she wants to live on the farm and just be with jake and her animals i truly feel like 2025 is joe's year i forgot about jq honestly lol (dont be mean anons lol, not a big jq fan-loved him as eddie though) but yea he's done few big things, i also feel like the younger kids will go far finn already has a good movie lined up for SNL that's coming out when he's done filming and maya has her music also i know im forgetting a few but honestly i feel like when you film a show for so long some cast members just stay out of spotlight
-like the vampire diaries for example only big person from it nina dobrev who i def think is gonna get hitched soon, and paul wesley and ian somerhalder they still have their stuff like the beer line.
they all still do cons btw the vampire diaries cast and i hope stranger things will take note and do them more after when the show is done.

I’ve stopped caring what my dad says about protesting and how he thinks it’s stupid to get arrested protesting at the universities because “your life becomes so hard after that arrest goes on your record” because the bigger picture is something he doesn’t want to see. Most boomers cannot handle that the reality of the future for us is grim without drastic fighting and change. They know they’ll be dead soon
But I cant stop shaking at the horrors that happened in the tents of Rafah. And that now that the Israeli president is now getting called for HIS arrest, he responds by more violence. Clearly nothing will stop him unless someone like the CIA assassinates him.
No offense to you dad, but did he forget what his own generation did back in his youth?
I know Alzheimer is a bitch, but the selective memory collection of older generation and their own youth activism is very embarrassing. I actually find zoomer very tame in comparison to gen X (those who were teens during the late 90s/early 00s) and even boomer who were popping pills like there's no tomorrow, engaged in straight up satanic cults, and polylove sects in the 70s. But noooo zoomers are actually very dangerous because....*checks notes* they are protesting against a genocide.
I wouldn't trust the word of people who most likely have only a decade to live on this world. The consequences won't be the same for them.
I think I already made a post about it but I'll forever side eye the hypocrites who during c0vid were arguing how it unfair to label all the anti lockdown protestors as "far right" or "white supremacists", have no issue calling all of those protestors "hamas supporters" (hi Dr. Eli David!). The mask of many former anti lockdown freedom fighters really slipped off the moment it came to anti Zionist protests. They hopped on the side of the same oppressive power that brutalized them 4 years before... Suddenly the police was "right" to arrest & brutalize people exercising their freedom of speech because antisemitism/islamist/Hamas supporter... Those people were never about freedom, they were about to have their own way under any excuse.... They are disgusting & fake and I'd advise anyone to never take seriously any of what they say any more.
BTW, isn't it funny how no one came up with the "antichrist" accusations against Netanyahu? 🙃 this dude checks out a bunch of boxes : martyring Christians (in their own churches), hounding, mass deporting & killing anyone on its way under the premise of providing world peace.... Conservatives called Obama the anti Christ for much less....jeez I wonder whyyyyy... ah yes, white people/conservatives casual racism of being suspicious of someone sense or morality based on their skin color lol

best things abt cornwall: ( a very unserious post)
1: PIRATE FM!!!!
i'm not even joking, johnny off pirate fm raised me. and their little segments, omg! i'm so good at where are we to it's not even real, and daytime in the duchy is the best programme ever. and before you ask, pirate's been bred into me. so much that ik their hotline number. 01209313900 just in case you were wondering. and you can get a pirate windscreen sticker. genius.
2: falmouth packet
i'm from falmouth, and when i tell you that the falmouth packet is the most quality piece of journalism out there i'm not exaggerating. the reports from the truro crown courts are just TOO FUCKING GOOD and the headlines are so overwhelmingly shit! i kid you not, one week the front page was 'pig becomes stuck in house' . journalistic gold.
3: the blanket hate of tourists!
this is a hate shared by every single cornish person, even though tourism brings in shit tons of money to our communities. we all gripe and bitch abt your quba sails coats and your teslas and range rovers and god help you if you have even the slightest northern accent. i am praying for you as i write this.
4: poldark
i'm going to keep this short and sweet. WHEN HE GOES OFF RIDING TO TRURO HE IS RIDING THE WRONG FUCKING WAY!!!!
5: david fucking barnicoat.
let's face it, if you're from falmouth, you either love him or you hate him. basically, david barnicoat is the local busybody, but we love him sm. he also used to do a very good column in the falmouth packet abt the shipping movements at the docks.
6: the pronunciation of fowey
some ignorant twats pronounce fowey 'foewee' because they're annoying and stupid. these people are so prevalent that studies say that the pronunciation of the place is literally changing. pronounce it FOY folks!
7: regarding anywhere beyond the tamar as 'foreign'
if you're not cornish, you'll need this explained, but the tamar is the river between devon and cornwall, and there is an ongoing joke between the cornish that anywhere not in cornwall is foreign. my lovely gorgeous amazing friend eliza is from exeter and i call her a bloody foreigner. btw we're not being offensive, it's a joke before people start getting all anti-discriminatory.
8: we laugh at your clocks that say 'dreckly'
we don't actually say dreckly anymore. merchandise has cruelly robbed it from us.
9: TRAGO
absolutely fucking brilliant department store, and the best one is in falmouth, not newton bloody abbot. it may be in a castle, but you can't find a fucking thing in there. you can buy anything in trago (the falmouth one) because it is just too good. but they sell the randomest shit, like in the sports department, you can buy guns and crossbows. like wtf. buuuutttt, they have the best christmas display, that is set up in like late september, so your perception of time is all fucked up. honestly, when they set it up for the first time it feels like november. i forgive them tho because they have a little train THAT GOES ROUND ON TRACKS. INJECT IT INTO MY VEINS.
also they have the best advert on pirate ever. *headbangs* wHaTeVeR yOu wAnT -DUH DUH- wHaTeVeR yOu LiKe -DUH DUH-
TRAGO IS LIFE
thanks very much for listening to my totally unserious post abt cornwall. david barnicoat, you won't be reading this but if you are, i'm sorry!

The 2nd one-
Shawn is:
Impatiently waiting for brotherhood in greater numbers than the world has ever known. 4-27-24
"Six months after Elizabeth had become pregnant, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a city in Galilee. The angel went to a virgin promised in marriage to a descendant of David named Joseph. The virgin’s name was Mary.
When the angel entered her home, he greeted her and said, “You are favored by the Lord! The Lord is with you.”
She was startled by what the angel said and tried to figure out what this greeting meant.
The angel told her,
“Don’t be afraid, Mary. You have found favor [a] with God.
You will become pregnant, give birth to a son,
and name him Jesus.
He will be a great man
and will be called the Son of the Most High.
The Lord God will give him
the throne of his ancestor David.
Your son will be king of Jacob’s people forever,
and his kingdom will never end.”
Mary asked the angel, “How can this be? I’m a virgin.”
The angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come to you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, the holy child developing inside you will be called the Son of God.
“Elizabeth, your relative, is six months pregnant with a son in her old age. People said she couldn’t have a child. But nothing is impossible for God.”
Mary answered, “I am the Lord’s servant. Let everything you’ve said happen to me.”
Then the angel left her." - Luke 1:26-38 (the Bible)
There was internet when I was in college, as brief a spell as that was in my life, but it wasn't the giant, unrelenting research thing that it is now.
I took 2 courses before my relapse. One of which was a world religion class. I aced both classes, albeit the other one was an open book, open note music appreciation class. Lol
All of this is to say that I learned a new thing today that started in my Facebook feed in the comment section under a post of a guy I follow.
It seems that he recently converted from the Christian pastor I knew him to be, to a member of the Nation of Islam.
As I read the shit back n forth from everyone, I learned that Muslims believe that Jesus is the Messiah.
I already knew that they believed he was born of the virgin Mary, that he performed devine miracles during his life. I also knew that there were mostly differences surrounding his death and transcendence into heaven.
I learned today that they all are taught to be more Christ -like than anything else. To live as closely to the actual way Jesus did, as they humanly can.
They also believe he will come back to earth in the end of days to defeat the false messiah, or the "anti-christ".
They can't truly call themselves Muslim without that belief, and love and respect for Jesus and all his followers.
Jesus would still love the misguided. All followers of him should do the same.
Discrepancies in the different doctrines obviously leave it to fall on individual personal feelings for how they believe, but both Christianity and Islam call for more christ-like living in the followers of each.
Pretty big learn for me today.
Btw, they love you guys, more than they love me. Lol
Jus' sayin'
I do love being able to find, so easily . . .books, all books.
Obviously, some research is tainted or altogether fabricated, but not just going to a website or social media page filled with biases, opinions, or out-right lies is nice.
Read the words myself, some new, some as refreshers.
Read them myself.
How I long for the day when peace will overcome - amoung you all, amount US all.
Unpeacefulness, or even hate and fear, born out of an ignorance of others is the worst kind of hate.
I don't care if you believe like me, or like a Deist, or like a Christian, or like a Muslim or someone Jewish, or fully Atheist, we are all brothers in humanity. It would be nice if we all acted like it.
And to not be ashamed of how some of my brothers treat others, or think them less than, would be ideal.
I don't want to promote standing up to bullies and judgmental people nearly as much as I want to promote peace, and the unnecessarity of being judgmental at all.
Until we all arrive here though, it is the responsibility of the few to stand against the many of whom would divide us.
Please share your love and your laughter with the world around you. At large, and small, kindnesses accomplish more in one second than hate would for us in a lifetime.
Until next week; does this sound familiar to you? At all?
"[And mention] when the angels said, "O Mary, indeed Allah gives you good tidings of a word from Him, whose name will be the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary - distinguished in this world and the Hereafter and among those brought near [to Allah ].
He will speak to the people in the cradle and in maturity and will be of the righteous."
She said, "My Lord, how will I have a child when no man has touched me?" [The angel] said, "Such is Allah ; He creates what He wills. When He decrees a matter, He only says to it, 'Be,' and it is.
And He will teach him writing and wisdom and the Torah and the Gospel
And [make him] a messenger to the Children of Israel, [who will say], 'Indeed I have come to you with a sign from your Lord in that I design for you from clay [that which is] like the form of a bird, then I breathe into it and it becomes a bird by permission of Allah . And I cure the blind and the leper, and I give life to the dead - by permission of Allah . And I inform you of what you eat and what you store in your houses. Indeed in that is a sign for you, if you are believers." - Imran 3:45-49 (Quran)

day 119 (monday, october 30th 2023)
Here’s something on Goodman-style metaphysics that I was thinking about on my way back from the Nai Palm concert on Sunday (which was lovely btw). So Goodman (and Rorty, and I guess probably Carol Rovane, and maybe Thomas Kuhn, but definitely Goodman and Rorty) think there’s no sense to be made of the way the world is, whereas most realist metaphysicians think that there is a way the world is. But here’s what I’d say. We can say how the world is under this or that aspect; we can also say, under this or that aspect, how the world is. But we cannot say what the world is like under no aspect whatsoever, except to say that it is such as to appear (or be, because appearance is just being-under-an-aspect) a certain way under this aspect, or another way under that aspect. But none this is the same as to say there are many worlds, or that there is no world at all and only aspects, or that there is no way the world is, nor is it of course to say, of a way the world is under an aspect, that that’s the way the world is objectively, or under no aspect. (Though you could say, with Dummett and perhaps with Berkeley, and probably with David Bentley Hart, and maybe with Leibniz, that there is no such thing as the way the world is objectively if that means the way it is under no aspect, but the way the world is objectively is the way it is under an aspect, only that this is the way it is under a privileged aspect, that under which God sees it.)
This relates to two ways in which the word “objective” is used in philosophy, especially by Kantians. (And you can add pragmatists to the analysis here, because you might think of pragmatism as a post-Kantian project; in Dewey it’s explicitly a post-Hegelian project, but in either way it’s a form of critical metaphysics which attempts — and I think explicitly so, in the light of British and American idealism and Hegelianism, and the various other currents of thought like evolutionary epistemology or whatever it was, whatever de Laguna and co were doing, that were active in that time — to explain the nature of things in terms of the nature of the possibility of our cognitive relation to things. And a similar thing is true of Foucault, Heidegger and the French phenomenologists and existentialists; they were all philosophers of constitution, in one or another sense.) But anyway, two senses of “objective”: there’s “relating to the possibility of cognition of objects,” call it constitutive, and then there’s “independent of any subject’s contribution, whether or not you think that subjective constitution is transcendental or universal or constitutive or a necessary condition on objects’ showing up to beings at all,” let’s call this transcendent objectivity. I always found it irritating when people respond to the criticism that Kant is a postmodernist because he undermines the notion of objectivity by saying that actually no, he’s establishing and defending the very idea of objectivity. Like there’s a clear equivocation in the senses of objectivity in question. And even though the critique that Kant was a postmodernist may well be due for the most part to people of the “reason and objectivity and facts and logic are the bedrock of Western Civilisation” persuasion, unregenerate anti-woke modernists if you want a name for that type of guy, there’s nonetheless a reason why those people make the critique. If anything you could read Kant as having shown that transcendent objectivity is either an empty notion with no content, serving only as the conceptual limit to what is in fact knowable or meaningfully thought of as existing (that’s one version of the the “two aspects” view of Kant), or that transcendent objective reality is not an empty notion but an unknowable one, there may or may not be a reality independent of perception but there’s nothing to be known about it, we can only presume what we’d need to be there for us to be able to carry on as we do (in assuming freedom etc.) and otherwise we must hope for the best.
In any case, post-Kantian philosophy went off in either of two directions and both of them were clearly a response to this very dilemma. The first, which was rationalist and had its culmination in Hegel, although Marx carried it in quite a different direction and Habermas and the later constitutivists like Rawls and Korsgaard returned to the more Hegelian spirit of things albeit in their own way, sought to establish that if you took the universalist aspects of constitutive objectivity as far as it could go, you got something that was either tantamount to or as good as transcendent objectivity (or even better, because transcendent objectivity was an illusion and what you got was as real as reality gets — and this last sentiment is something that Marx shares with the contemporary Kantian rationalists). But the other strain, which had its early expression in Kierkegaard, and in Nietzsche although we perhaps shouldn’t think of him as pursuing a project in the wake of Kant per se, and later got expression in existentialism and post-structuralism, was basically abandoning both the possibility of transcendent objectivity and sought to take constitutive objectivity to its limit without any hope of rescuing the claim of its universality. And the fact that generations of thinkers did see this as a natural outgrowth of a tradition that did in fact come from Kant is no mistake and that’s what people who say Kant invented postmodernism are saying, or at least that’s the grain of truth in their critique.

i do think david is an interesting character, but he’s only interesting once you strip away the show’s good guy doctor david persona. I dont find engaging with him on the show’s level to be fun because i think it’s a carefully crafted lie. the idea that david and aaron are the perfect gay representation couple is not interesting to me. but examining david for who is really is, i do find to be interesting even if it looks like im just hating.
like. david hasn’t bonded with isla the way that aaron and nic have because (at least I think) he’s still pressed about having to share her with nic when he wanted his perfect picket fence life with aaron. that’s interesting! To have a character who has everything he ever wanted but not able to enjoy any of it is an interesting premise. David straight up admits that medicine wasn’t his passion, he just went into it because that’s what he thought he should do to make some imaginary father proud. that’s interesting, especially since he doesn’t seem to have any hobbies or close relationships other than aaron to fall back on. what are david’s interests? We...don’t really know. At least, I can’t think of any. Aaron has interests. He’s a gym rat. He like business, he likes management, he likes social media, he likes being a father. What does David like?
He has a twin brother and a father who adore him, but who he only likes as concepts. that’s also interesting! it’s an interesting way for someone to see the world and the people who inhabit it. he wants paul’s love and emotional support, but he never wants to give it in return. Paul would raze the earth for David as he would any of his kids but David will never return that energy. Leo literally supported David’s dreams and protected him his whole life but if he dares put a toe out of line with what david thinks he should do than he comes down on him like a sack of bricks. I think it’s fascinating how when Britney died, David assumed control of Leo and his life and his child but it was Nic who was actually able to connect with him and help him begin to process his grief through understanding rather than control. The only times he seeks paul out are when he wants something, usually emotional support in a situation he can’t seek it elsewhere.
He doesn’t respect Paul enough to even tell him he’s going to see Robert in prison. Doesn’t care enough to try and talk that out with his father because it would be a roadblock into achieving what HE wants. Certainly doesn’t think to call his sister, who Robert tried to murder. He doesn’t okay any of it with any of robert’s actual victims because their pain is a burden to his paper. and once he got robert’s kidney when has he gone to see him after the first time? never. heartfelt thanks then never sees him again. Imagine being Robert, imagine how that must feel. Imagine having someone fight so hard to come and see you and then promptly discarding you when you’re not useful anymore. Because that’s sure what it looks like! Not writing the paper anymore, no more visits to Robert. Got the kidney? No need to visit Robert. Robert is a bad person who did bad things, of course he is not entitled to David’s time but does that really jive with the narrative of David being a loving, kind person? Of course not. Robert was means to an end, but because it’s Robert, evil guy Robert, it’s not an issue.
and that’s not even getting into him saying practically outright he doesn’t consider Harlow a person after he gave her a seriously unprofessional diagnosis of something she clearly didn’t have. During the Hamish saga I believe it was Kraina (iirc -- I was a mere lurker at this time i remember because it stood out to me then and it still rings true now) tweeted that whatever happened to Tyler as a result of Hamish being invited into his life was David’s fault. She was so right about that. what happened to Tyler? Oh, his life was ruined, he went to jail for a crime he didn’t commit and nearly lost his girlfriend. Piper nearly died! But his choice to go behind everyone’s back and invite Hamish into their lives because he had a good experience with Paul is not factored into that story. It should absolutely be!
david is billed as a strong person, but he crumples as soon as any pressure is applied to him. he lashes out indiscriminately, at his husband and at his friends and his family. lately, he doesnt seem to have the emotional toolkit to deal with stress. which is another interesting character trait that we never see explored. he judges harshly when people do what he does which is hypocritical, but interesting.
Even his relationship with Aaron is more interesting when viewed through this lens because Aaron has slowly been losing his actual personality and been amalgamated into David’s. Like what’s the last ACTUAL aaron storyline you remember? A storyline about Aaron that’s not also about David. David’s is Riverbend. What’s Aarons? is that not interesting? watching two people become enmeshed while the dominant personality leads? I liked Aaron because he was a vapid douche but he’s lost the edges of his character to fit in more nicely with david who has only been gaining edges recently. I do believe that David loves Aaron. I think Aaron might be the only person he loves. If this was actually criticized by the narrative of neighbours, wouldn’t that be interesting? David building his white picket fence life through any means needed? I mean, he and Aaron practically tried to steal Elly’s baby. is that not something worth examining?
I know that it seems like im just being a hater but im not. I don’t like david. I find him to be unpleasant and i dont like the way he treated harlow - a vulnerable young woman in desperate need of help - especially. but I really do find him interesting. Really interesting but only if you look at him objectively without believing what the show tells you. who is David Tanaka when you strip him of his finely crafted veneer of being a good person? A manipulative, cold man trapped in a life he doesn’t enjoy, raising a baby with a woman he doesn’t like with parents he isn’t close to and a brother who wont conform to his narrow ideals. that’s interesting. I don’t like David because of the show’s presentation of him as a nice guy, but riverbend could almost have fixed this by lingering longer on David’s evil kidney moments. like letting Kyle (who hit him with a car) choke. Letting Garreth die for what he did to Aaron. those are moment where I think we see the real David shine through. I wish there was time for that to be fully realized. I wish the writers cared too.
#neighbourspost#this post is not anti david btw#ive made plenty of anti-david posts in my time but this is not one of them#this is a lament of wasted potential. i could possibly be convinced to like david if he was just unpleasant#because i like unpleasant characters. i liked harlow more when she was 'bad'#i love robert robinson who is possibly one of the worst and most unpleasant people to grace ramsey st#but david doesn't feel that way too me because of how distorted his actions are by the narrative#i hate being told what to feel about objectively bad choices by the story#i hate that he never gets held acocuntable the same way paul and leo perpetually are#but me not liking a character doesnt mean that they dont have merit or that other people cant enjoy them.#if you are a david enjoyer dont let me stop you lol#neighbours is about making it into what you enjoy#long post/

I've got a question for you crazy joe. Not sure of your stance on biblical religion, I haven't had much time to look at all your rants.
But do you believe we're living in the end times?
I feel as if 2022 is going to be drastic. Maybe not as drastic as an asteroid destroying us, but for at least 6 years I've been dreading the year.
hahahaha... (good question) first let us clear up some misconceptions. one if as a matter of faith like me you subscribe to the Bible. “The End of the World”, if you mean as to the end of this Creation, with the resurrections of the just and unjust. That my friend is not going to happen till at the earliest two to three millennia from now. if your intended meaning is Armageddon and the Second Coming of the Messiah ben David, commonly called Jesus Christ. If i was to put not to fine a point on the subject i would say that we are in those times. HOWEVER, as to time frame i would say we have another fifty to eighty years before The Battle of Megiddo, and the Second coming of Yeshua Our Redeemer, The Word, The Beginning and the End. Even the most cursory examination of scripture clearly foretells of numerous prophecies that have yet to be fulfilled. and every dot and jot of prophecy shall be fulfilled prior to His Coming Again. what we are transitioning into i like to call “interesting times”, an ancient and one of the worst curses you can lay upon a person, LMFAO! (BTW, as a side note: the Trumpets mentioned in Revelations will be an actual “sounding” like Trumpets. years ago it was postulated that the effect would be caused by a asteroid near miss of the Earth. where the asteroid will come close enough to interact with our atmosphere. as it deflects through the upper atmosphere it will cause resonant force waves to produce a booming sound. the asteroid will be part of a cluster of asteroids such that we, everyone on Earth will hear a series of these booming trumpeting sounds. and it begins, since you mentioned asteroids i thought i would share) these “interesting times” will continue up to the time that the Earth is consecrated as by the “Holy Ghost”, which ordinance is also called “the baptism of fire”. (remember in my essay/post; Mars guilty of Flooding the Earth. that i said Noah’s Flood was the Baptism by Water of the Earth. which is the first ordinance requisite to going to Heaven. the next being receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost - or as commonly referred to as the baptism of fire.) which to stop the “Anti-Christ” from destroying the World in a uncontrolled nuclear holocaust that he shall unleash, the consecrating “fire” of G-d shall quench the process and at the same time burn the truly evil from the Earth. This “fire” of G-d, I believe will be a massive lighting like effect, that is actually a immense plasma discharge caused by a form of corona mass ejection from our Sun. Coupled with our weakening electro magnetic field strength associated to Pole Shift it will super charge the ionosphere. And as we all learned in School the Earth is always (+) ground. The discharge will be on a magnitude were the atmosphere will produce sheets of plasma (which may also interact with the vast quantities of frozen methane hydrate in Our Oceans). Sufficient to vitrify vast areas on Earth, and similar to what occurred at Trinity Site when the gypsum of White Sands vitrified, when the concussive force of the detonation struck it shattered the glass turning it to sand. I hope that answers your question, while being modestly informative.
i am working a essay which is a tapestry woven from all the seeming jumble of odds and end in my essays. because they actually have continuity and present a much more fleshed out description of Our Histories. although i anticipate it will be much the ongoing affair as it will take me years to share the “crazy” knowledge pool i have thus far acquired. so i will need to find a more flexible format than Tumblr or circumstances permitting i may have to develop a web-site of my own.
Thank you for stopping by and reading some of my essays/posts. i hope you continue to do so. and i do appreciate your question.
Donn
[BTW, i prefer “crazy Donn”, although i will answer to most any cognomen or appellation.]
