I lost power for most to the day today, so I sat at a coffee shop and just killed time writing down headcanons for every SP character I could think of.

there's alot of them, but hopefully somebody out there finds these fun

Butters

Gender fluid / non-conforming

Saved up enough to move into dorms away from their parents

Autistic and very gullible still

has learned to stand up for themself and their friends better

Got fed up in senior year and spiked Cartman's drink w/ laxatives and locked him outside at a house party

saw your post abt rapunzel manipulating tim in their convo and god hard agree it Is concerning that so many ppl didn't see it. also crazy to me that ppl are mad at tim and defending rapunzel, saying that they would have taken the book too because tim was being rude etc. to me it seemed that both tim the character and ally the player Wanted to believe that rapunzel wasn't part of the plan and was good but just kind of strange, and both are successfully fooled. tim absolutely fumbles the interaction and ally could have played things better, but rapunzel was so clearly in charge of the conversation, leading him into saying worse and worse things and putting his foot in his mouth while tim was genuinely trying to be nice. tim is awkward and blunt and eccentric with Everyone, it's weird that ppl are saying he was being singularly rude to her or patronizing her or that he deserved to get the book taken. that interaction was clumsy as hell and so many words could have been chosen better but tim so clearly was trying so hard to fix his initial fuck up and be friendly w her in the same weird way he talks to everyone. I don't see how ppl came out of that scene on her side even if tim was a little rude and unfortunate w his word choice, and it's concerning to see ppl being like "ha take that stupid old man!!" abt the book being taken + in defense of a character we met an episode and a half ago and who we have been told outright is an expert at deceiving people. the princesses are so so interesting as characters and the morals going on are complex and that's a whole different conversation, but I feel like no matter whether you love rapunzel or not, ppl should be able to recognize that she was manipulating tim in that moment and taking advantage of his trusting disposition. not trying to start discourse in your ask box ofc!!! I've just seen No One Else express discomfort w rapunzel in that scene

anon this ask has been living in my head rent free since you sent it, i've been stewing over how to respond because y e s. for context, check out this post to save discourse on main (this is about to be a long one of fan critic analysis, get your popcorn and settle in if you wanna read, this is the longest post i've ever made), im gonna put my thoughts and response under a read more, sososo many spoilers under the cut read at your own risk

These were all in the replies and tags and I want to reply to all of them bc they're all worthy of being talked about bc i feel like the majority of the fandom is almost scared to critique?? So like let's talk about it since nobody else seems to be taking this approach from what I can tell (thank you to you anon for being on my side as well as the rest of you who are screaming with me) I will begin by saying that my original post is not critiquing ally the player, or any of the other players. i understand that they were in that dome, filming a session of dungeons and dragons, and improv acting and roleplaying for many hours on end with back to back episodes. i kind of get ally and the rest of the table maybe just wanting to "hope for the best", especially ally as they are quite a "hope for the good in others" type of person. it's frustrating from a viewer perspective sure, but i totally dont blame anyone ever for making a "wrong" or "non-optimal" choice while playing a ttrpg, they just have the misfortune of being filmed while doing so. i myself have made tons of bag fumbles while playing dnd, even when i thought everything through ten times over. so anything i have said or will say forward isn't to put any shouldering on to the people playing these silly storybook characters, like, i Get It

What i do want to critique is the fan response, which is the more worrying one!!! like i said in my original post, i was surprised by my d20 watch buddy having a similar response to ally. the total "oh, maybe she's just quirky bc of the self isolation, maybe she's autism rep" approach. my friend, love her to death, is also one of those "sees the best in others and hope everyone is always aiming to be their best selves" type of person, very similar to ally. i came online after that episode expecting everybody on the fanbase level to be screaming with me in a "i told you so!!" way

instead. i came online and saw people just on the attack and the defense in absolutely skewed ways!! out of NOWHERE, all these fans have come on to post about how "tim was patronizing her, and thats why she stole the book" "wow i would have hated being called girly and honey as well" "wow these conversations really didnt go their way why was tim so mean to her :(" or the opposite of "rapunzel is the evilest person to ever exist bc xyz these princesses are evil villains" or "we need to protect these princesses bc they just didnt know any better uwu"

i feel like, on a fan level, me and you anon (+all these lovely folks in the notes of that post) were the only ones screaming "hold on, that is literally not the same media i just watched"

i've seen before a lot of people be like "wow, media literacy is at an all time low" and i never really understood that until i saw the reactions after that episode. as a fan or viewer watching any media, we have the privilege of seeing more about the media than the people who are creating it. that's the best joy of being a viewer, we get to sit back and spot those foreshadowing moments and bite our nails in suspense when the music goes creepy and see the artwork and overall, we have the privilege of catching vibes that maybe those acting in it do not. this leads to those bonding moments of "i told you so" "wow im biting my nails and pacing" "oh they're gonna REGRET that". and, an "oh my god no no no do not hug her she wants to take your book god now she's feeling you up with her hair she's looking for the book ROLL INITIATIVE!!!!". it leads to glorious moments of ~dramatic irony~, a literary term for literally when something is happening in a story and the readers can catch it, but the protagonist probably didnt bc they're not seeing the full picture. While watching, from my perspective, yeah it was frustrating to watch the player bag fumble turn after turn, but it's a game of dnd, they film so many back to back, they don't get the same experience as us. however.

brennan did a great job at dropping the foreshadowing, to the point of not even so much subtly foreshadowing, he DIRECTLY TOLD THEM rapunzel was a liar and uses her words as knives. like someone pointed out, the players even PAID for that information, with the golden bridle. by the time they met these princesses, they probably knew the most about rapunzel's true nature over all the other princesses, that she uses her charisma to her advantage. the players made their choice to do the diplomatic route, to split up and chat. ally did the right thing for picking rapunzel with tim's 19 charisma stat, it would have been charisma against charisma, and an even playing field for someone they have been explicitly told is a master of words and deceit.

as fans, we've seen these episodes edited and put back to back. clues are lined up in a row. was it frustrating to see ally playing tim in a naïve way? sure. but tim's been pretty naïve this whole time, so you could stack it up to a character choice. what's more frustrating is seeing the responses of viewers being blindsided by the book thieving and chalking it all up to "evil vs good" and rapunzel's choice shaking them to their cores.

by this point in the story, by the time you get to that episode, rapunzel already gave enough bad vibes with the talk of her charismatic deceits and with her hair everywhere spying on them. maybe that last one wasn't explicitly stated, but it was heavily implied to the point of gerard writing the plans on a note instead of wanting them said out loud by elody, a scene that happened way before tim's. by the time we see rapunzel get to the kitchen, she is INSTANTLY catty. someone described her on the post as "eldritch regina george" and. yes. exactly. eldritch regina george. from our privileged spot as a viewer, rapunzel comes in, puts on the fake smile, puts on her fake tone, and says "what are you doing in here? :)". she was already ready to fight timothy. that first sentence was hostile. she was OFFENDED and checking on tim to make sure mother goose wasn't counter-spying. i honestly didnt think that would have to have been explicitly stated, she was in attack mode and plastered the fake smile for a show so that she had the upperhand in the conversation that was about to happen. this is something that fans should have at least caught on to right off the bat, we've been explicitly told that she is fake more than she is honest for the sake of being a "performative person"

the conversation happens, and she starts becoming more verbally hostile. "i dont know, what SHOULD we do hehe. it's ruined now :)" "no use in crying over spilt milk *pours milk with hair on the floor with a smile* oh no :)" "...or if it was on purpose :/ :)" "why dont you go get a mop :)" "i chose to be charming :)"

every sentence she replied with was carefully chosen. as viewers, we can watch brennan's face in full clarity of intimidation. we can have the knowledge that has been provided to not trust rapunzel as she is a charismatic spy who has words for knives. in my opinion, even without those clues before now, her show that she put on in the kitchen should have been enough as is to show that she is acting maliciously and with hostility. the smile is there as to not incite physical violence on tim's part bc then it would make TIM look like the bad guy if he attacked first. by the time she goes in for the hug. im sorry. but ally the player should have caught that, the whole table should have caught that, and-more importantly-the fans should have caught that. we all watched the same thing. we have all been told the same information. to purposefully ignore all of the red flags just to pull a "well tim was kind of mean and patronizing, and rapunzel doesnt have social skills from being locked in a tower, i forgive her, wow i didnt see that coming" is absolutely *batshit*

the lack of people catching on is what concerns me. i've met TONS of people growing up (sorry here, im all for women's wrongs, but mainly cis-girls tbh) who act like rapunzel does. from middle school and high school bullies/mean girls. mean girls at college. from parents or teachers or bosses. from normal adults in my life. they always have the same tone and inflections in the same places. the same faces with the wrinkled nose. the same sickly sweet smile. brennan played rapunzel, a known manipulator, perfectly. to a T. he embodied it fully. people JUST LIKE RAPUNZEL walk amongst us every day. i can guarantee you that even these fans that didnt catch it have met people like rapunzel in their own lives.

rapunzel is a character yes, but she is a character that mimics a masterclass manipulator. she IS the mean girl, the regina george. it leaked out of her every word, tone, and inflection. every single thing told about her and shown was, in no world, some "uwu the sweet bean was locked in a tower and doesnt have social skills". that was her origin, her start point. just like sleeping beauty locked in a castle, snow locked in her coffin. rapunzel directly says "i chose to be charming. :)." she had her origin of no social skills, her sad origin of being locked in isolation in her tower, and said "this is my greatest flaw, so i am going to dedicate my life to improving this skill bc it's what stopping me from achieving my goals." she trained her social skills to be good. too good. so good that she hopes nobody will catch her sweet charming self in the act of malicious intentions. this. was. directly. stated.

it worries me on a psychological level of the fans. yes it shows a lack of media literacy, something is frustrating on a fan-to-fan level. it shows a lack of ability of critical thinking. it shows a lack of ability to participate in dramatic irony, a necessary literary device to instill tension into a horror campaign. but also, and to what is probably my main point in this novel long hot take: it has real world implications. mean girls like rapunzel are a guarantee in life. i'm sorry, but it's true. maybe the person acts differently, maybe they aren't as obvious or more obvious. but these people walk amongst us. they use the same tone and same cadence to their words. these manipulators see what they want, and devise a way to convince the person into giving them what they want. rapunzel did not use the Charm Person spell, or the Friendship spell. She used. her words. like a normal human being. and by doing so, we as the fans were able to catch on and should have had a moment of "RUN GOOSE, RUN AWAY, NO DONT LET HER HUG YOU". but instead, a lot of people turn a blind eye to these manipulators in their lives. they pull a "aw but they have a tragic backstory, they're just confused and need love :/" "they cant be THAT bad..." they see a sweet little smile on the face and an upticked tone of voice, and go "well, they're playing nice, so now i have to play nice bc otherwise im the bad guy here" which!!! you do not!!

this is exactly how manipulators worm their ways in, this is what ALLOWS manipulation to work in its various forms. it's how people get trapped in abusive relationships. it's how people get scammed. on a personal end, i lived a narcissistic manipulator for a long time growing up, and it was exhausting. once you could put down the rose colored glasses and see right through the act, you notice how every inch of their mannerisms are performative. everything they say and do comes with the caveat of them wanting something from you and are trying to butter you up in the meantime. if you catch and call onto it, they IMMEDIATELY turn on you, they sneer and retreat to their next target who it will fool. the cycle continues, the next target is selected.

on a fan level, if we as fans cannot play into dramatic irony as a practice, if we cannot exit our seats of mind to catch on to those "eldritch regina george" quirks at the bud in a piece of fictional media where the puzzle has been handed on a silver platter, then there is a l o t more work to be done on 1) general media literacy 2) ANY fandom perception on media and 3) general awareness of how to spot and deal with manipulators in real life. if you can't catch on to it in a silly fictional ttrpg media, how do you expect to catch on to it in real life? how many of these same fans are trapped in manipulative relationships around them? how many more will they fall for bc of the "oh no but they have tragic backstory so it's forgiven uwu"? as fans, you cant sit there in the same breath saying that tim was condescending to rapunzel and then follow it up with not noticing what was ACTUALLY happening in real time. if you wanna say that rapunzel was ALLOWED to be a manipulator because of her origin, what other manipulators are you defending in your real life? how many of these manipulators continue their tricks BECAUSE they know naïve people exist and will fall for it? how many have been enabled in the same cycle bc it worked on one so it'll work on the next?

i wish i had a fun way to conclude this absolutely massive chunk of fandom critique gibberish, but i just dont. i wish i could find a more comprehensive way to scream about this, so take this post as me SCREAMING about this, anon my dm's are open if we wanna rant some more

watching people argue about greek mythology is so fucking funny. especially when it comes to those who've been given "the short end of the stick" by zeus. (it's also kinda irritating bc im nerd but wtv lol)

people seem to be confused about myths and what actually happens in these myths about the gods. so let me say, there are really no credible primary sources of the gods and their actions. there's only secondary sources made by "mortals." plus, languages are hard. esp. translating old languages like ancient greek to modern english (or any language) where there aren't corresponding words for ours so, stories get mixed up and jumbled. also, the words used to describe something is more than not different than the way we describe things.

ex. the story of hades + hersephone is called "The Rape of Persephone"...that just means the kidnapping. The Kidnap of Persephone is what it means. i mean could it have happened, sure. but in the (main) myth, it didn't.

regardless, research their myths guys. plus, a kids adaption is going to be different than a historical adaptation lol. (im talking to you Percy Jackson fandom). this is thrusting me back into my greek mythology, death obsessed teen phase. sighhhhh

I feel like ‘possums get a bad rep. And I’m mad abt it.

Bc it’s become the ohoho! A stupid redneck pet! Look how silly! Which I have a problem with on two fronts but I’ll focus on the ‘possums.

First of all, they aren’t naturally aggressive. The playing dead trick is their main defense, it’s only when confronted in stressful situations where they can’t use that trick that they may become aggressive - I.E. your dog has prey drive and tried to eat it because he thought it was dead. Their trick is actually really cool- they can lay perfectly still for HOURS, and they emit a specific smell while they do it that makes them even more convincing!

Also, they’re nearly immune to rabies, a disease which I’m happy to inform you has had 20 confirmed recoveries since the disease was discovered, and a death rate so high that those 20 recoveries don’t even qualify as a .1%! I wouldn’t reccomend handling any animal you don’t know, but if you have to, handle a ‘possum. They’re your best shot of not having to get several rounds of localized vaccine shots and a prayer and still maybe dying to rabies.

While we’re talking about immunities to things that easily kill humans, ‘possums are immune to a lot of snake venoms, including rattlers and cottonmouths. Scientists have been working on finding the neutralizing agent in their blood

They also groom themselves so meticulously that they are one of the biggest eliminators of ticks, and are immune to Lyme disease! They protect humans from the disease as well just by grooming themselves so thoroughly <3

They’re also scavengers and carrion-eaters, aka nature’s clean up and disposal crew. As long as it’s edible, possums are eating it, and that includes garden pests like slugs and cockroaches, dead animals, and food waste.

They also rarely destroy property, and the best way to get rid of them if you don’t want to just. Close doors and put away food. They move on without a fuss.

They’ve also existed as a species for over 70 MILLION years, making them the oldest mammal still in existence.

They’re also the only marsupial native to North America :D

They were also found to be smarter than dogs, particularly in finding food and remembering where it was.

the story completely ignores the fact that connor has been gaycoded since his very first appearance, it ignores his history with the men (eddie fyers, master jansen, his grandfather) who were father figures to him when ollie was pretending he doesn't exist/dead, it ignores the particulars of connor's relationship with his mother and the fact that they just don't share that kinda bond... but hey, that's been talked to death. by me. by other people, i'm sure. instead, i'll say we know the very act of making connor asexual is an act of homophobia but we should get into just how far that goes.

first and foremost:

at this rate, there's no beating the inherent infantilization of characters of colour allegations. and certainly not between connor being aged down and greatest hits such as "i want to tell someone about my awesome day and eat ice cream".

but the real showstopper here is these fantastic words being put over panels of a character created specifically for one of the single most recognisable out gay men in pop culture:

let me put it this way: there's no music meister in comics, he did not exist before neil patrick harris -- a gay man -- voiced him in the brave & the bold cartoon and even meister's origin frames him a certain way ("bullies used to pick on me because i sang in choir/but something very strange occurred when i kept singing higher," he sings in his debut episode). there's also no inherent sexual or romantic element to meister's gimmick, merely an ability to control people through music

and yet, in the press release from hell that preceded this story, the writer notably called music meister the 'perfect villain' for connor. why is that? what are we meant to understand here? arguably, someone along the lines of poison ivy would be more appropriate here (connor's lack of sexual attraction would save the day etc, you get the picture). in the pride special, meister doesn't have a single line of dialogue, there's not a single thing about him that makes him an especially necessary piece of the story or irreplaceable in any way... except for the fact that he's associated with a gay man by default, except for the fact that the narrative seems dedicated to showing gay people as capable of oppressing asexual people (whose silence is an 'aberration' and is 'ruining our chorus', right?).

not to mention, the absolutely insane phrasing of sex involving "sharing" your body with someone but that's a whole other conversation and all i've got to say on it for now is that it makes the author sound wildly christian lmao.

point being, homophobia won and everyone celebrating connor's story is undeniably a homophobe.

lupin is a franchise in which “death of the author” can be observed. The people who created those episodes no longer work or benefit from the show. It’s important to acknowledge that the origin of those “jokes” are transmisogynistic, but the nature of this particular show’s status means individuals can rewrite those parts into something that represents them. There are undercurrents of coding, intentional or not, in Lupin’s character from the very beginning, that make some of us lean toward interpreting some of his disguises as drag queen or genderfluid. (Lupin’s character in particular has this, but I haven’t seen much to suggest the same with the other characters. At least, not in the same way. Zenigata’s “crossdressing” bits definitely just come off mean-spirited with no saving graces, headcannons or otherwise.) that said, most people in the fandom are far too lax with their handling of these issues, and need to respect that many others don’t want to see it. I would like to stress that I am definitely not excusing the horrid “jokes”. I’m not rly sure I worded any of this right. I say all this to tell you, some of the gross handling of the fandom is due to ignorance, not malice, though they are indistinguishable without context.

if i'm being completely honest, it sounds a bit like you're talking down to me. to clarify, i'm not saying u can't view lupin characters through a trans/genderfluid lens, i'm saying that u have to be careful abt how u do it and consider the original context, ESPECIALLY if ure tme

the writers didn't make these jokes bc they "worked for/benefited from" the show, they made them bc they thought they were funny. lupin iii is flawed. the earlier installments are a product of their time and need to be recognized as such. rewriting the transmisogynistic jokes to try and twist them into "good rep" is thinking uncritically bc it ignores the original context-- pretending they aren't being told at the expense of trans women in some desperate grab for lgbt rep IS transmisogyny. yes, coding is and has been a thing all throughout the series, but that doesn't mean it wasn't done with harmful intent

death of the author doesn’t work here either bc i know u cannot tell me with 100% certainty that monkey punch HIMSELF was the one who wrote those jokes into the episodes/movies. he may have started it with how he originally characterized lupin, i'm sure, but at a certain point u can’t keep using him as a scapegoat when other people are perpetuating his bs (namely those who worked on part 2). he was not the only piece of shit who wrote for this franchise

overall:

• hated that we didnt get any canon gay will scene. i didnt necessarily want his heart broken by mike rejecting him but it wouldve been okay, altho preferably why the fuck didnt they use his talk with jonathan as the opportunity? it would not have killed them to add 2 - 3 minutes more just for that scene, and people would finally stop thinking will had a crush on eleven¿???¿¿¿? and itd be SOME justice having him come out esp bc robin already has and will is just some sad pining gay boy like... wtaf

• eleven using love as her strength and receiving words of love is absolutely one of the best parts of her story. for years she has been used as a machine and she doesnt have a concept of people just loving her, they all have always wanted something from her, but her mom and mike dont want anything from her. they loved just her. her journey of finding out that her powers dont have to result as a form of anger or pleasing others is an immense character growth, idc what people say. there is nothing wrong with using the love you receive to motivate you, and yes max was dying next to her, but henry literally belittled her and destroyed her hope. she deserved that type of push, shes been traumatized her whole life.

and to answer your other question, i dont think eddies death was necessarily pointless, but it did not feel like his story came to any conclusion. he didnt Really seem to have done anything besides the cliché "im not running anymore" (at the worst time, mind you), and no one even mourned him? my only guess is that mike just doesnt know yet but... doubtful. duffers said in s5 eddies death will play a role so we'll see.

Another game with nonbinary characters is an rpg called Ikenfell! It was one of my favorite games to play last year and the music and just everything? Honestly so good I'm def replaying it this year. It also has tons of good accessibility features!

Another game studio I love is @pillowfightio !!! They worked on Later Alligator, We Know the Devil, and Heaven Will Be Mine. I highly recc all of them but esp. Later Alligator cuz like just look at Joanie. They're so cool.  

In the game Everhood gender doesn't exist <3 Literally multiple characters are referred to with they/them pronouns and the gameplay is very enjoyable 

 CW LOTS of flashing lights and I feel like there should maybe be more cws but I'm not sure what else to add :l I guess a warning is that Everhood gets into more serious stuff and I'll be honest when the game first came out I had to put it down for several days b/c I just wasn't ready for a lot of that stuff, but I honestly liked the game a lot!

I was debating on adding this bc while I love this game there's some issues. So Gnosia is like werewolf ( or among us if you will ) but more narrative focused with time loops etc. There's two wonderful nonbinary characters and you can be nonbinary HOWEVER ( minor gnosia spoilers. skip past if you want to avoid it) . . . For some reason finding out the AGAB of one of the characters is mandatory and I fucking hate that. It's so unnecessary esp for the world building that's been done. Also tws for the game: sexual abuse / assault, gore ( in only one scene ) (spoilers end) but yeah I still added it because the characters are so neat and strong for the type of game it is and without that bit I wouldn’t feel so :/ abt recommending it. It’s pretty fun ngl

Wandersong!!! The main character is nonbiney and I love them <33 It's such a lovely little musical adventure with such a nice narrative and!! Some of the devs just released Chicory ( which I haven't gotten to play yet ;v; ) but check that out too!!

Bravery Network Online is super fun!! It's a turn based rpg that feels really good and has two characters that use they/them pronouns ( Fel and Reed ) the character designs are sooo good and the game is currently in early access!

All time faves:

The Adventure zone: A tumblr fave, my introduction to the world of podcasts. Follow the most wholesome family, the Mcelroys, as they play Dnd and other board games. Each “arc” has a plot line, but can easily be listened to just for the unique McElroy vibe. It’s pretty long (around 130 ~60mins episodes) but you can jump at the start of any campaign you wish to! Ongoing. [queer characters rep through the whole series]

The Magnus Archives: Another popular one! An archivist for the Magnus Institute of London is forced to accept that eldritch horrors and paranormal activity are real. This is a horror podcast, with a pretty extensive trigger list (the horror in itself is treated really well, and very rarely goes into real life horror. YES there is queer rep in this (main characters) but you definitely shouldn’t listen to it for that specific reason, trust me.) Somehow not linked to magnus burnsides? Finished [mlm + bi/ace Mcs, bisexuals characters, various trans/nb secondary characters] [finished with 200 episodes]

Archive 81: Another horror podcast centered around an archivist dealing eldrich horror and paranormal. The story is more focused on paranormal than horror, but there is still a trigger list. The various protagonists are really funny/lovely. Not finished, currently on hiatus. [mlm main character in the 2nd part of the show]

Death by dying: An obituary in a small town investigates a series of strange deaths. Talks about paranormal and grief, strangely uplifting and sad at the same time? bite sized, only 5 episodes of roughly 30 minutes. A second season was just announced!

Alice isn't dead:  A roadtrip about à woman trying to find her wife, but finding terrible things along the way... Horror podcast, but a bit lighter than tma or archives 81. End is uplifting, fuck all love stories except for whatever those two lesbians got going on. I definitely have the hots for the voice of the big mean lady. [wlw mc]

Time:bombs : a three episodes short story about a bomb disposal unit. The dynamic between the characters is hilarious and wonderful. Sadly short, but the Creators did express the desire to keep going with these characters sometimes in the future. [Too short to act on it, but all the MCs are explicitly mlm.]

Really good:

King falls AM: Sammy is a new resident and radio host in the city of King falls, a small city that surprises him at every turn. Paranormal activity, a vibe that’s halfway between gravity falls and welcome to nigthtvale. I adore the dynamic between Ben and sammy. [main character is mlm, secondary wlw character] [This podcast has been discontinued]

Midnight Radio: All ghost stories are love stories. A radio hostess falls in love with the mysterious girl that sends her letters at the station. A really wholesome short story, will lift your mood. 10 episodes of 20 minutes. [wlw]

Caravan: A young man, desesperatly in love with his best friend falls into a canyon and some sort of magical world? Sexy cowboys and demons, a legendary caravan. Is Horny, but also very funny. Still ongoing, season 2 coming 2021. [mlm MC, multiple bisexual characters.]

Welcome to Nightvale: Cecil Palmer is the radio host of Nightvale, and tells you the tales of this myterious and highly paranormal town. Narrative lines are more of the long type, and anyone can hop on at any episode. Definetly a good background podcast for when you’re busy doing something else. [Mlm main character.]

The penumbra podcast: A podcast alternating between two stories, one of them being the story a noir detective, the mess of his life and psychological progress. Heavy on found family towards the last episodes. Didn’t listen to Last citadel yet. Ongoing. [A lot of queer rep. There is canonically only one straight man in the junoverse. NB main character using he/him pronouns. Various mlm/wlw]

The far meridian: A young agoraphobic girl travels the world with her moving lighthouse, searching for her brother. found family themes/wlw main character. Ongoing. [wlw Mc]

Wayward guide for the untrained eye: A pair or twin journalists investigate the town of Connor Creek and its terrible secret... WEREWOLVES! The twin’s dynamics is gold, i am in love with both of them, and the show’s general energy is really light and upllifting. Only a season of 10 episodes, they havent released a statement concerning a possible new season yet, but definetly can be listened to as a stand alone. [Some bg queer characters.]

Unseen: A Series of unrelated episodes following characters whose story w cannot see. Wonderful narrative, super cool voice actors. I am in gay love with the mean teacher from ep 2. Witchery and magic but make it bittersweet. [Various queer main characters.]

Good:

(all these were really good too, but i just didnt get as involved as in the previous recs)

Finding penny:  Mabel, a soon to be high school graduate, is looking for her missing girlfriend, Penny, with the help of her best friend. Clues? A mysterious ritual in the woods. Bite sized, every episode lasts a handful of minutes; i was scared the characters wouldn't be as developed as they deserve due to that time limit, but hey I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't the case. A story about grief and family. [wlw] also im pretty sure one of the va worked w the whisperforge??

CW; bird/human murder mentions, homophobic and racist behavior/language

The strange case of starship iris: Gay space pirates and found family against capitalism. Easy to listen to, pretty light hearted. The second season is currently coming out. [wlw Mc. Trans character]

The 12:37: A young woman climbs aboard the wrong train, and ends up traveling through time and space. wlw main character, found family theme. mental health issues are talked about/shown. [wlw Mc]

Love and Luck: A queer slice of life, spiced up with a touch of magic. The story is told through voices messages. A really light hearted tone even tho serious subject are talked about. Will give you cavities. [Mlm main characters]

Bedtime stories from hell: A depressed demon tells you bittersweet bedtime stories. in the “good” section because it juste started, only a handful episodes and we still have to see where it goes! But a good start, the stories really are captivating. [Variously queer.]

The bright sessions: What if the X-men went to therapy? Thats it that’s the plot. Lovely characters, always walking on the gray morals line but in the best way possible. [mlm mcs, ace mc, bisexual character]

Lost my interest/never finished it:

Let's talk about myth baby: a really interesting podcast about Greek mythology. Will be for you if you love that subject. I couldn't keep going because I didn't like the narrator's voice (yea I know I'm shallow lmao) [As gay as greek preople went. Which is gay but also somehow homophobic at the same time. You know how it goes.]

Wolf 359: Doug Effeil is the communication officier in a spaceship. His story and struggles with his peticuliar shipmates. Honestly was really good, but i dropped it because of college and never picked it up again. Might try again some time around. [Bisexual characters.]

The two princes: Two princes of opposites kingdoms are bound to fight each other until one kingdom is left. A really fluffy/easy going podcast. Listen to this if you need a no brainer gay love story. I binged the first season, but was less enthusiastic about the other two. Just not my type of story i fear. [mlm]

Return home: A young man receives a mysterious voicemail telling him to go back to his home town, where his mother is missing and his father doesn't remember him... A horror/comic story. No trigger list for this one, at least for the first 30 episodes i listened to. They do talk about stuff that would typically be horror, but in such a light hearted way that it really isn’t. The plot is cliché, but self aware. It’s a nice podcast, but the “light adventure” tone without any contrast lost me on the long run; again, good but not my thing. [Mlm character that literally dates the devil so thats sexy.]

Critical role: Another Dnd podcast; a different vibe than taz, as there is much more roleplay. I was stopped by the fact that you have to watch the videos to fully get the interest. It is really good!  but podcasts are my working background sound, so i don’t really have the time for this one. [no idea i didn’t get far]

Dream boy: great soundtrack, interesting story, a really good voice actor. Just... too horny for me (i got second hand embarrassed by the time the neighbour just... you know , in the rain and stopped and never picked it up since) [mlm]

The wanderer: a bard wanders into the forest, looking for his lover. Very introspective, its actually good but podcasts are once again my bg noise and sometimes i miss a sentence here and there; completely stopped me from being able to keep track of what was going on in this one.

Who is Ena

Ena can b describd as an "abstract girl split in half, w 1 blue side n the other is her yellow side!" Each side (emotion/mood, 2 b specific) seems 2 hav their own voic actor credited along with seper8 credits 4 each mood! So far the canon sides r Ena (happy), Ena (sad), n Ena (drunk)! They seem 2 act accordingly: Happy acts happy n optimistc, Sad acts sad n especlly depressd, n Drunk acts confused n dizzy [In the Credits, it would look like thise: Ena (happy) by Gabe V., Ena (sad) by Lizzie Freeman, (drunk) Ena by Sam Meza

4 Episodes 1-2, thy follow thise pattern exctly! So we cn expect wht 2 see from them, n each voice actor is creditd accordngly as seper8 b all a part of Ena

On epside 3, Ena is seen as actng diffrnt!! She's suddnly less predictabl! I say thise bc Suddenly, her voic Actors r not stuck 2 Only their sides. Thise is also emphasized when looking at the credit list! No longer is it "Ena (happy) by Gabe V., Ena (sad) by Lizzie Freeman" it's now jst "ENA by Gabe V. and Lizzie Freeman"

Happy's voic can sound STRESSED n sad, Happy can tlk w Blue's side in mor control n Sad's voic can sound Really happy n optimistic. Somth's Diffrnt n Not The Same

Temptation Stairway Summary

Skipping 2 my point, The summary of the episode Temptation stairway is tht Moony and Ena have a bet 2 race 2 the Great Runas! The Great Runas, can grnt u any wish accordng 2 Moony n som of those Ena passes by on the wy. The wager, is tht "whoever reaches the top of the Great Runas n makes their wish 1st, has 2 pay the debts of the loser" (yes it’s phrased like that) As Ena journeys thru, The DIFFERENCES between Ena Temptation Stairway and Ena Extinction Party n Below, is mor obvious as the epsde progrsses, even 2 wher Happy's voic actor is the 1 screamng in agony 2 jst get murdered already. The Episode ends w Moony beatng Ena (but it's 100% possibl it can be the other way arnd, that ENA Beat Moony, b thats somth I'll discuss in a bit L8r). Moony splits in half, revealing that according 2 her, "she wished 2 be skinny" n a humanoid coms out of her previous form. As 4 Ena, Her blue side slowly dispprs n its not answrd why.

Theories so far, are:

Moony wished 4 Ena 2 b happy (or 4 her sad/blu side 2 go awy. 4 wht reason can b eithr wholsom or 2 Moony's advntge [like so she "doesnt have 2 deal w Sad Ena"]) - b if Moony wished 4 Ena 2 b happy/b rid of her sad side, tht wld mean perhaps she lied about wishing 2 be skinny (her new humanoid form may be how she is "paying her debt 2 the loser"). Unless the Runas can grant u more than 1 wish.

Ena ws the 1 who wished her blu side awy, whch is a little depressng tbh

If both the above r tru, it may b possibl bc it wsnt clarified (afaik) tht the great runas can only grant ONE person a wish (or more). I think we only get tht implica8ion bc we see 1 (open) door while in the distance, ther r more doors tht look like their eyes r closed. We hav 2 remembr Moony said "whoever makes their wish 1st whch means Ena n Moony can totlly mke wishes @ the sme time

Somhow, turning pure yellow/only happy is how Moony is payng her debt 2 Ena(??) (opposite 2 the 1st theory)

OR If Ena won the race, it can even b possibl 2 consider tht Ena did not make ANY wish, n her debt 2 pay 2 Moony is her sad/blue side removed (I do not subscribe 2 thise) 

This info that was brought up 2 me is high evidenc that Moony won the race, n it explains how Moony surprises Ena whn Ena arrives. “I’m The Best and you’re the worst! I wonder who got the hair chest?” said by Ena, is a direct reference 2 a phrase usd by kids when they lose that goes “First is the worst, second is the best, third is the one with the hairy chest.”

Besides theorizing abt the introduction of a new forme (I'm ok w just calling it Scared/Anxiety 4 now until 4rthr notic), 1 of the theories ive seen is tht Temptation Stairway's new introduced forme is due 2 being something akin 2 being "integr8d" (probably by force, accordin 2 the OP) (in other words, all her sides merge in2 one) n Ena being devast8td abt it

Integr8ion is not inherently a bad thing. In systems, ther are 2 definitions: "the breaking down of barriers 2 form healthy multiplicity, n then healthy communic8ion n less amnesiac barriers" and the othr, n mor FAMOUS definition bc its the oldest 1, is "final fusion"

Fnal Fusion is when all the members "fuse/merge" 2gether until ther is 1 single mind left. 9:08 - 9:19 when Ena jumps in2 the "Holy Code" where we head undrwtr in2 a sea of diffrnt doors, we see floating Ena models (n the comment section seems 2 gravit8 2 callng them "dead bodies") (Honorary mention: You'll notic they glitch in2 Mannequins if u pay attention 2 them). This piec of info is Direct Evidence 2 the multi-ena theory, bc ther r Explicitly mor thn 1 ena's on screen! wht's concernng n unanswrd tho, is y do they glitch in2 mannequins? Does tht mean all the mannequins we sw on screen in the begnng of the video (n onwards) were all previously an Ena? Is it only an Ena tht can transform in2 a mannequin or cn othr chrctrs also become mannequins?

And this isnt new! She’s been doing it sinc Auction Day (ee-nah/ii-na) n Extinction Party (ay-nah). Thise may or my not sggst that perhaps Moony's inconsistancy is bc these othr pronunci8ions or names cld b of other ena's she's met in the past w similr or diffrnt preferences! Standout things from this animation:

-This Ena switches between a male & female voice at seemingly random instead Happy speaking with a male voice and Sad speaking with a Sad voice. The text boxes noticeably refer to this Ena with a reversed E, and The Shepard says "Another Ena troublemaker", implying that there are multiple Enas. We also see some Ena corpses flickering into the mannequin bodies at one point. Third, at the end we see Ena's sad half turn from blue to yellow over the course of Ena & Moony's conversation. My personal theory is that this Ena is possibly 'broken' in some manner. -Moony either doesn't care or dosen't realize that Ena's voices aren't matching the personalities anymore. -The grey personality appears to come out when Ena gets too stressed out. Ok re VP Harris i feel like she's going to have a hard hill to climb whether she does everything PERFECTLY or not, right? This article and a few others I've been reading are not super optimistic about her ~~chances~~ bc she's been given the real shit jobs so far (immigration, crime, etc) which are all R hammering points. But I feel like that could actually be freeing? Im obsessed w the concept of the valley of political death where a politician can make a bold, morally superior move that initially craters them but after a couple of months ppl end up having a higher opinion of them?? I think that wrt Kamala Harris, her biggest issue is our country's polarization in addition to the fact that while she knows California politics down cold and I'm not diminishing her accomplishments as DA, attorney general, and senator, that isn't representative of the rest of the country. Don't get me wrong, if she's the presidential nominee, I'm campaigning for her as much as possible whether professionally or as a volunteer, but the fact remains, a large part of the country, including people that pulled the trigger for Biden, won't vote for a Black/Asian woman, especially those who voted Republican down ballot (Biden-Collins voters in Maine, I'm staring directly @ you).

Plus, the Biden administration is sealed tight (which is infuriating the DC press corps) and Kamala's corner always leaks like a sieve, which has been an issue she's had since the presidential primary. Also, Kamala quite frankly let her family play too much of a role in her presidential campaign like Maya and Meena Harris should not be employed by the campaign and Meena shouldn't be using her aunt's image to boost her clout as an influencer while also tweeting about defunding the police, which both Kamala and Biden have loudly disavowed. If you noticed, while Jill Biden and Michelle Obama and Bill/Hillary Clinton (depending on who was running) all campaigned for their spouses and did events, but none of them were employed by the campaign and none of them contradicted the nominee! And I don't trust Meena to do the same thing based on her Twitter persona.

I also think crime and immigration are Democrats' biggest red spots as a party simply because we keep letting our most liberal members on MSNBC every single night to yell about abolishing and defunding things so nothing Biden and Harris or any other elected Democrat says counteracts that. Max Rose, who repped Staten Island where all the NYC cops lived, got clobbered with defund the police despite the fact he's about as pro-cop as you can get for a Democrat. Again, we need to run a tighter ship in terms of messaging as a party and that's my bottom line. If that means banning certain people from being on cable news, so be it.

I talked about it before but I really think that Kamala needs to shore up support in the Blue Wall, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. Her being on the ticket actually helped with our Latino support although it still cratered from 2016 to 2020, but quite bluntly, we need to make sure she wins enough white men in swing states. That means putting a Midwestern Democrat on the ticket as VP (Pete Buttigieg, Gretchen Whitmer, Amy Klobuchar, Conor Lamb if he gets elected to the Senate), and that means parking herself down in the upper Midwest from the moment the primary is over until the general election. Honestly, I don't think a white and more moderate seeming female VP from the Midwest really hurts Kamala electorally given she herself is a progressive woman of color from California, but who knows, I may be wrong.

All that makes sense right? I'm not an expert but I've learned a lot about how conservative America is in the last year and it'd do people better to learn that sooner rather than later.

hey so i uh. finished the book last night and here are my thoughts

disclaimer(s): this will be long and also probably incoherent. if you have different opinions that’s great, and i will be glad to hear them, just please do not be mad at me. some more important things to know might be: a) i read this in a very short period of time so my brain is a bit overloaded and that might affect my perception of the plot. b) i don’t care abt the darkling, i basically never have

alright, let’s start with stuff i didn’t like so we can get that over with:

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE

i really hate the trope of big bad gets defeated and it’s really narratively and emotionally satisfying and then they just...get brought back. it cheapens the end of ruin and rising for me. that was the one time i felt anything for the darkling, when he just wants to be remembered right before his death. but then he gets brought back. and i’m like 😒 ok. so i didn’t really enjoy his chapters, i don’t enjoy him as a character, and i thought his chapters stalled the plot.

the plot pacing...maybe it’s just because i did a speed run through it, but there was maybe too much going on? like the characters were doing totally different things away from each other, so some parts felt rushed. it felt like some important scenes were cut for time. one example is when david dies. we leave off with genya saying she can’t find him, and then we go to zoya’s pov at his funeral. but zoya was somewhere totally else right before? anyway, some parts felt like they were just there to wrap up loose ends, and i was kind of skimming

i could’ve done with a little more on zoya’s feelings for nikolai. like her internal monologue. we got a little bit of it, but between her realization that it’s ok to love people and let them in and the scene with their kiss, i could’ve used a bit where she was like, “oh, i need to tell him now.” a scene where she’s kind of realized that she deserves him?

this is minor, but i really thought we would get a scene between jesper and leoni where they talked about his mom’s sacrifice, idk i thought it would’ve been a nice full circle moment

WHY DIDN’T WE GET THE NINEJ REUNION IN NINA’S POV?! IM GOING TO ******* *** yeah i really wanted that

at the end, i felt like we were missing some kind of emotional climax. i don’t know exactly why i feel this way. i think it’s because the battle with zoyadragon happens and then we go straight into nikolai making a bid for queen zoya. maybe the emotional climax was supposed to be the darkling? idrk

aaaaand that’s all i can think of for that

THINGS I LIKED (OR LOVED)

the emotional beats felt very similar to fire (by kristen cashore) in some places and that’s my favorite book. the idea of pushing people away because you’re scared of the grief of their death? go read fire!

that zoya ended up on the throne. i liked it a lot, it just feels right

hannina, because i’ve been gunning for them since king of scars came out and i couldn’t find fan art or fics or anything, they are so underrated. i could talk abt them forever. the idea of nina being able to heal from the pain of matthias’ death and move on with someone else? i loved it. i think sometimes fandoms have a hard time coming to grips with the idea that people can love more than one person in their lifetime

hanne trans rep! i think this storyline was developed well, even though i kind of wanted them to be able to run wild and free in the countryside. ruling a kingdom seems stifling, but that’s just me

nina bi rep, and you know what? we get such shitty bi rep in ya fantasy, i’m still recovering from whatever the fuck sjm did. thank god for nina. the best bi rep in any ya fantasy i’ve read so far💖💜💙

that brief interlude in ketterdam. was it necessary? maybe not, but it was one of my favorite parts. i just breathe a sigh of relief when i’m around the crows again

genya and zoya and alina and nina’s friendship. i already said it in a post, but well-written female friendships are surprisingly hard to find in ya. friendship is inherently romantic! zoya holding up genya after david. zoya’s feelings for nina in contrast with how nina thinks zoya feels about her is just (👩‍🍳💋)

SO WHAT NEXT?

i don’t think we’ve gotten any news abt a sequel, so this is probably the end of the grishaverse for now. what i want most of all is a collection of short stories from different povs all around the grishaverse. just one chapter little slices of their lives. here’s some possibilities i was dreaming up

inej taking down a slaver’s ship, being a pirate, in her element

hanne and nina on vacation from ruling, maybe riding horses, just some fluff

jesper and leoni meet, it would be emotionally charged, they would talk abt his mom and she might start teaching him more fabrikator things

nikolai and linnea opjer? just linnea opjer? i’m so curious about this character

kaz waiting for inej to sail into the harbor. he’s by the docks, he has some kind of present for her. them bickering? sitting on a roof together? idk i just want to live in kaz’s pov when he’s thinking about inej

nikolai’s off doing diplomacy things, being charming, in his element, but then he comes back for zoya’s surprise birthday party. this would just be so good

hi there i am goy and i’m writing a dark fantasy book abt witches and i’ve made the baltic/slavic protagonist have red hair and be burned at the stake for it (because of how the spanish inquisition killed them thinking they stole the fires of hell) along with being a pagan.

but- i recently learned about how redheads were associated with jews and as a result were persecuted as much as they were, and how it is a widely ignored.

so i don’t really know where to go from here lmao i’m afraid of having this girl’s death be the cause of historical antisemitism, but not be jewish.

i understand if you don’t feel comfy with this i’ve just been doing deep dives into harmful stereotypes that i do not want my characters to portray in any way. i would really appreciate it, the whole point of my book is gonna be just gay poc (also religious) witches that take down the patriarchy and i want to be responsible and respectful for these kind of things - otherwise it would just be a very hypocritical thing.

listen, most things in (medieval) european history end up having ties to antisemitism. this is just how it works. yes, the redheaded witch stereotype has ties to antisemitism. so does burning witches at the stake in the first place. a lot of later witch stereotypes are in and of themselves very antisemitic.

my recommendation? make a jewish character part of your gay witches of color gang. a. there are jews of color, so you don't have to change that aspect b. it enriches your storytelling and the impact it has historically and c. it would be really satisfying for me, personally, to see some jews kick some european ass (btw I recently read the faceless old woman who secretly lives in your home - did not fucking expect the historical jewish lesbian rep I got but very appreciated).

it's okay that the character being burned at the stake isn't jewish. practically, while antisemitism fueled witch-hunting, antisemitic violence mostly led to outright violence in the form of pogroms and blood libels. but if you're going to make a story about the victims of the church, maybe include the ethnic group that couldn't rely on a home for two thousand years because of it.

(seriously - tfowwsliyh is so good, makes sure to include more than one jewish character, acknowledges the reality of antisemitism in the 19th century, actually visits a shtetl - just so many good things)

fellow jumblr writers such as myself - feel free to add any input you want in reblogs and the notes, but personally I think the easiest way to not erase the history of antisemitism is simply to include the history of antisemitism.

Ok here's something that I spend a lot of time thinking about, especially as a fic writer, which is the energy a show gives us and whether or not a fandom matches it.

I'll admit I've never been active in the fandom of an office sitcom but I have been in the fandoms for serious dramas and for dramedies and I've found that while every fandom has its share of fluff and angst in general comedic content fandoms tend to take the content much more seriously than the original material. I'm specifically talking about leverage right now, because that's my most recent obsessions, but I've seen it happen in other fandoms as well. If a piece of media doesn't take itself seriously, the fandom will.

So in leverage so much of the fic is dedicated to Eliot and Harrison's trauma. A lot of it goes into how Parker's mind works and how she has trouble trusting. Where the show plays her poking Eliot for laughs fic will acknowledge that that shows she isn't afraid of Eliot and say, okay, that means something. I was surprised at first to see just how much fic features Eliot/Moreau until I realized that it wasn't shipping, per se, it was an exploration of abuse and how damaging it is to love the wrong person. I mostly read ot3 but I'm sure the same also applies in other sides of the fandom to Sophie's identity crisis and Nate's just, immense amounts of trauma and mental illness.

And I'm just comparing it the source material and seeing how few dramatic moments there are that feel like this. The big bang job is glossed over and never mentioned again, even though Eliot had to kill again and I'm fact killed a dozen and more people and he doesn't like guns because it makes killing so easy, so so easy. Hardison HAS to have claustrophobia now, having been both drowned and buried alive, and that's just never talked about. That's not to say that these characters are taken lightly - the reality of Parker's time in the foster system as traumatic is treated seriously, as is Nate's trauma with hospitals and sick children, but the consequences of things that happen within the show are often forgotten in favor of more positive character development.

But the fandom doesn't let go. The fandom says: we love these characters, and that means we love the light-hearted show versions but also the ones that are hurt and traumatized and survivors. And I love that. I really do.

Honestly, I feel for John. He's doing his best, and if that means he won't do standup anymore, then I, personally, will not hold it against him, and I hope the same is true for everybody else.
