hiya! i double majored in sociology and religion; my religion senior thesis was about multi level marketing and the mormon church. even though it was a religion thesis and not a soc thesis, i relied heavily upon max weber’s the protestant ethic and the spirit of capitalism. essentially i argued that mlms and mormonism function in many of the same ways, particularly in the emphasis on financial contribution as a mark of a woman’s independence while maintaining traditional gender roles. because that intersection of financial ethic and traditional gender expectations exists in both groups, there is a significant population of women who occupy both groups. and both mlms and the church have used this overlapping population to their advantage: the church benefits when influencers with large mlm followings also promote the church, and many mlms have leaned into the gender roles and limited financial freedom to recruit further distributors.

this is a topic i absolutely love and hope to do more research on if/when i do a sociology phd! and i’d love to expand my research more broadly to evangelical social media usage and the socialization that occurs in evangelical social media space. my sociology thesis was actually also doing sociology of religion, i wrote about how lgbtq+ folks find community and make meaning in progressive christian churches.

The four men continued to watch you, you smile and pass by them, as if they were never someone in your life. It was as if they truly had never met you. "R/N?" Soap called for you, making you stop in your tracks and turn around, a small smile on you. "Hey guys," the disappointment in your voice noticeable. They knew your parents were around but you wanted, no, you needed them around. Family is not just blood but a bond between a group of people and they had become your family.

"R/N, we're sorry-"

"Save it, I just had the best day ever and I dont need you to make it bitter sweet, night." You walked away, your team waiting for you. Soap and Gaz were distraught, you needed them but the need they had to be around you, to feel like for once they weren't trained killers was greater than you'll ever know. Gaz held a bracelet in his hands. Every deployment he did after meeting you, he brought a bracelet from that place and made you wear it for luck on your next race.

By the next day, as they walked the paddock, Price kept cursing himself, yes he had a job to do but why use your race as the perfect plan for his job? He knew how important this day was for you and he still lied and left you alone, the stress that you felt during qualifying, how he would make horrible dad jokes to ease the stress. Ghost felt the same, he cared for you like an older brother would and knowing he had disappointed you and not even cheer from the bleachers, was something he had to fix.

Soap didn't talk to anyone, he had told Price the mission was not even a major problem and that if you didn't know they were in the city, you wouldn't be mad. The four men watched as you walked passed them, the camera crew filming you, interviewer walking alongside you for questions. People stopping you to take pictures and get autographs. "Congrats in P1, R/N!" a fan yelled, others gave you their support and until then the men found out you in fact did get pole position. They never checked online, always wanted to listen to you gush over it.

Warm up lap began, the men in the garage, silent. Soon, as the lights went out, you took an impressive lead on the rest of the grid. Price got a call from Laswell, "We have to go-" Price said

"You can't be serious, Price, R/N is racing-"

"We have a job to do, we aren't here for them this time." it was cold but true, their mission was supposed to be accomplished yesterday but something came up. Gaz and Soap did their best to watch more as they walked away. Ghost left the bracelet Gaz wanted to give you by your spare set of Gloves in the garage.

The race had its ups and down but you like a phoenix in the sky prevail, the race won by you. You wanted to run to the four men, only to find out they weren't there. Your mechanics were so you ran to them and hugged them, jumping over the barricade and cheering. Cameras on you and the other drivers on the grid. Inside though, it was a rather weird feeling, you were happy but part of you knew this was the first broken glass in the friendship.

You got to the podium, drank and sprayed the champagne, confetti in the sky, all cheering you on. In that moment, you were on top of the world. Once the celebration and interviews were over, you looked for them in the garage, only to find a new bracelet. You take it and your eyes get teary, "they were here." you whisper to yourself. Your wrist coming in contact with it. "Mate?" Gaz spoke, you turn around and hug him. Soap knew that in that moment, he no longer was the one you held closer to your heart. Gaz smiles and touches the bracelet, "I told you, I'll...we'll always be here, every race, far or close."

Price and Ghost stayed quiet, they wanted to explain their absence, but what more can they say? They killed many men, blood on their hands once more, they had to leave you once more because of a stupid meeting that was made to look important but wasn't. Soap kept replying how you got off your car and as the cameras pointed at you, you scanned the area, looking for them but never finding them. "R/N, please, please look at me," Soap begged and before you looked at him, your team called for you.

"Go kid, we'll be waiting for you." Price reassured and you walked away. And they did, they stayed in that garage and waited until you came back because there sure is a lot of explaining to do. "You think R/N, will forgive us?" The hopeful sergeant spoke. Price sighs and shrugs, "who's to say."

Hours later, many apologies and lame excuses, Soap finally hugged you, an entire week of him being in the same place as you and this was the first hug he had given you.

As he was searching the hospital and such for any medical records of you or your family, he discovered that your family was actually a part of the noble scene within the Eastern Empire. When he investigated further, he learned that your mother was the body they had found deep in the woods when he was 11. You were presumed dead as a baby, but you told him that you were raised by the boars that inhabited the area.

You had even told him that the boar head you always wore was your boar-mother’s. To everyone else, that fact was very disturbing, but you seemed to have a very sentimental attachment to your mask. Thus, he allowed it to stay in your chambers. After all, he wants to be on your good side when he asks a very important question.

When you got to a certain point in your lessons where you were behaving like a typical lady, aside from when you were absolutely sure that someone was challenging you, he proposed the offer of you becoming his second concubine. You went silent for a few moments before you started shaking in anger as you told him that neither of your mothers were disloyal to either of your fathers and marched off.

Rashta

She was at the palace door, waiting for Sovieshu’s return from hunting. However, she did not expect to see a very beautiful woman, dressed rather indecently and ruggedly, to be at his side just like she was however many months ago. Maybe this situation was different, though, and the Emperor was just doing the right thing.

But, as you passed her, you whispered something about how the snow-woman would never survive in the wild. Rashta knew that you were talking about her, and it honestly didn’t surprise her at all. Ever since she became a concubine, people have been talking about her in very negative ways. However, she had never heard that before.

Because she was very curious as to why you were in the forest, she eavesdropped on any conversations Sovieshu and Navier had about you. From them, she learned that you were actually a noblewoman who was originally presumed dead when they found your mother’s body in the woods but there was no sign of you.

Fortunately, she was not aware of Sovieshu asking you to become his second concubine. Otherwise, she might have destroyed a certain mask that she knew you were very attached to out of pure anger. That would have resulted in a catastrophic battle as you still knew how to fight because of your boar family.

Navier

She was originally upset that her husband had brought another woman into the palace, but you were very different from Rashta. In a short amount of time, she saw that you held no romantic attraction towards Sovieshu but rather a desire to serve her instead. One example would be the many acorns and shiny rocks you had given her, a mannerism she knew was characteristic of boars.

Yeah, the Emperor had informed her of both your noble and animalistic background. She remembers being a young girl when she had learned of both ‘your’ and your mother’s death. But she wasn’t too sad then because she had never gotten to know you or your mother. She did get to know the rest of the Hashibira family.

Navier had also overseen your tutors and governesses to make sure that you were getting the best education you could. She would even allow you to copy her because she knew that you learned better that way. It took a while, but the lessons were working and you were becoming more ladylike. Your family had even commented that you were very polite, and she rewarded you by ordering some tempura for you.

When you showed up to your afternoon tea meetings with Queen in your hands, she let out a gasp of shock as she took the bird from you. He didn’t seem injured, but rather shaken up, so she was relieved. You explained that it was a shiny bird and thus you deemed it worthy for her, and she let out a giggle at your actions.

Heinrey

Seeing you for the first time was definitely an experience he never wanted to relive. You attacked him and carried him to the Empress. He only regained his breath once he was in the arms of his Beloved, but he saw how loyal you were to her and so the two of you understood each other on that particular level.

Navier, not knowing that he was Queen, had told him about you a few different times. You were a noblewoman who was taken to the forest by your mom in an attempt to flee an attack, but your mother had died and you had gone missing. The story was actually very interesting to him, and he is surprised to hear that you were raised by boars.

After all, your behavior did not reflect that anymore. Your lessons had trained you to act like and be a proper lady, but you still knew how to fight (as seen when you attacked him while he was in bird form just to bring him to Her Imperial Majesty).

Now, you knew that he was Queen. However, you treated him like a friend and an ally. You also started bringing him shiny things, which made him pick up a book about boars so that he could understand you better. Any friend of the Empress’s is a friend of his, and thus he felt obligated to get to know you.

Kosair

When you first met each other, there was an instant connection. You weren’t like the uptight and proper ladies of the court, and you didn’t mind getting roughed up a little. The two of you often play-fight as a way to show your aggressive love towards each other, and it once ended up in you pinning him by straddling his waist. The shade of red his face turned is incomparable.

The two of you also bond in the fact that you both absolutely despise Rashta. You just thought that she was all bark and no bite, but Kosair knew that she was plotting against his younger sister. Another thing you both have in common: you both love Navier like a sister (in Kosair’s case, she actually is his sister, but anyways).

You have shown him the boar mask that you usually wore in the woods, and you explained that you had been raised by boars after your human mother had died. It would have been a disgusting sight to anyone else, but to Kosair it was as though you were sharing a brooch that was a family heirloom. He listened as you told him about your life and how the pressure of being a noblewoman was piling up on your shoulders. He placed a kiss on the back of your hand and reassured you that it didn’t matter how you acted because he would always love you anyways.

Once it had gotten around that Sovieshu had asked if you would become his concubine, your beloved was incredibly angry. In fact, one would think that he was asked instead of you because of how furious he was. You had to hold him back from throwing hands with the Emperor, which was definitely a difficult task.

hello!! I don't know if this blog is still active or not but you're the first resource I found when looking up things about writing blind characters so here i am. I have a character who's a fantasy race that naturally has a better sense of smell & hearing. This character also happens to be blind. Their blindness is not inherently why they have these advantages, but I still want to avoid coming off as cliche. Is there any way I should make this clear/anything i should alter? thx for reading !

Hi, the blog is active. If it's been a while since the last post, it's just because life hasn't given me much time to work on the blog but it has not been abandoned.

As for your question:

-Establish which race your character is early on during their introduction. You can work some world building in piece by piece and explain that they have stronger senses of hearing and smell than humans.

-In your planning/world-building you should consider how heavily that race relies on those senses for environmental awareness. Once you work out what's possible/impossible for your character to smell and hear, then you go through what you need your character to notice for the story.

Those two above should be enough to avoid cliche territory but if you have a moment where the character's ability to focus on a sense seems too special or plot-convenient, just work through whether or not it's possible for the character to identify this sound/smell and break down what the thought process was.

I have a lot of people in my life who treat my senses of sound/touch/taste/smell/etc as super human because I notice details they've never had to pay attention to before. A lot of times I respond to their awe by explaining my thought process and how I came to certain conclusions. It's mostly pattern recognition and detective work.

For example, I can smell a burger joint from two blocks away, but I have friends who won't smell it until we're walking past the door.

My friends don't need to think about the smells and what they mean because their environmental awareness begins with visual input and everything that comes after is just extra context. They'll see a sign from two blocks away, identify the logo/name/branding. If they're hungry they might focus on that sign long enough to remember the food sold there and maybe even the smells they remember. If they're not hungry, they'll move onto the next visual cue they notice.

I am getting a lot less visual info with a much shorter "warning" time, so I'll probably catch the smell of food on the wind long before I ever see a sign. For my brain, the thought process becomes: I smell food. Someone is cooking meat. Beef? There's notes of fried oil in the air. It's probably a burger place. Then I work with what I know about the area and if I remember any major restaurants.

Another example is that I used laundry room as markers for corners and apartment buildings in my neighborhood. I can connect that random rumbling sound with the smell of fresh laundry.

For most people it's just an unknown rumbling sound. For my bestie, it's a mechanical sound of a home appliance but not a refrigerator or a heating unit or something he specifically worked with in the past. For me, the process is- It's a mechanical sound but not one belonging to a car. It's also stationary and the sound is steady and repetitive, looping ever 3 seconds or less. I connect the sound with the smell of fresh laundry and I know that it's coming from a dryer. Which was actually very helpful in my old apartment building because I could tell if the washer and dryer were in use from outside the building, so I knew if it was pointless to get my laundry ready right away.

So if you have a moment that seems too super powered, just work through the thought process and adjust details until it feels right.

@scottishgremlin & I talk semi frequently about how strange scythe merch is - my theory is that because a lot of it comes from subscription boxes, the product designers need to make it somewhat palatable to the general reader & non-scythe crazed individuals. This is usually achieved by slapping a marketable quote on a thing only barely related to the series. However, out of all the scythe merch I’ve seen, this piece is by far the worst, and I love it.

like all respect to the artist since this art is really good, but the presentation is hysterical. This is the scene in the vault where Citra and Rowan are about to fuck nasty, which brings up multiple questions. Why is this a Polaroid? Who took this photo in the vault? Citra and Rowan were there alone. How did Citra and Rowan obtain a Polaroid camera? Most likely explanation is that it was just chilling in the Vault Of Relics, which, okay, I’m sure a Polaroid is a relic to those in the postmortal age, but would Citra or Rowan even know how to use a Polaroid camera? also, the quote - “ours is a perfect world…” besties what are you TALKING about? The full quote is from Curie’s diary entry before we learn that Curie and Goddard have to go to Endura, and reads as follows -

“Ours is a perfect world—but perfection does not linger in one place. It is a firefly, by its very nature elusive and unpredictable. We may have caught it in a jar, but that jar has broken, and we are in danger of shredding ourselves on its shards.”

okay so curie is kind of foreshadowing her own death and the sinking of Endura here. Good job Neal, good writing. But this scene in this print takes place only mere minutes after curie fucking DIED, and in her final moments, allowed Citra and Rowan to live. Curie was Citra’s mentor and a motherly figure to her, she’s certainly not going to be thinking it’s a perfect world while she’s sinking to the bottom of the ocean while knowing full well that Curie is dead. Rowan didn’t have as much of an emotional attachment to Curie but in this book alone, he’s been held prisoner, watched Tyger die and have his body snatched by Goddard, who stands for everything Rowan is against (who also led to the death of Volta in the previous book!!!!!) and would have been murdered by Goddard in front of the grandslayers, if Rand, who murdered and manipulated his best friend, didn’t free him as an act of revenge on Goddard and out of guilt for killing Tyger. Rowan has seen the deepest depravity of the world, and you’re telling me that after he just watched Goddard sink an entire island and kill like, thousands of people, just to win an election, being able to fuck Citra finally is gonna make him think everything is fine again???? Like, even at the end of the series, when Rowan is on one of the rockets, when he and Citra will finally be safe, he’s shit talking Cirrus because it won’t revive Citra. Rowan is not one to forget the deep injustices of this world because he sees Citra’s tits. So Citra and Rowan are both very upset and about to die, which, in my speculative opinion, is probably why they ended up being intimate in the vault in the first place - they were hurting, they were scared, and all they had in that moment was each other. They did it to comfort one another. However I’m calling BS on the perfect world thing lol. Same vibes as, idk, putting Volta’s quote about not wanting to self-glean over a scene of the tiniest monastery burning down.

idk I just think it’s hilarious that this book subscription box chose this of all scenes to make scythe seem like a YA romance. Like you could have made a print with Jeri/Greyson, Curie/Faraday, Scythe Ashcorp/Goddard, or even Citra/Rowan in another context, just NOT THIS SCENE LMAO.

Via photo dump on her instagram account, the singer announced her highly anticipated return, sending shockwaves and creating chaos on platforms like Twitter, TikTok and Instagram. The singer also hinted at the arrival of new music, up roaring her entire devoted fan base.

She also announced the coming of two new songs — a collaborations with pop singer Ariana Grande as well as her own single.

Her sudden disappearance from the spotlight did not come unexpected after the whole cheating scandal with ex-boyfriend Evan Henderson. Humiliation and Defamation had pushed the 24 year old to leave the music business and take a very needed pause as it seems, reading from her instagram post.

The thought of Amara stepping back onto the stage has not only fans on the edge of their seats. Everyone who is someone in the music business is anticipating her return especially because of the big hole she left. And let’s not forget, that Imani did not contradict any statements her ex-boyfriend Evan Henderson had dropped about her. So the question is of course, whether she accepts those allegations made about her or whether this will turn into the next star he said - she said.

Last time Amara Imani dropped a single was over two years ago, so of course her whole fan base is awaiting her return with impatience. Whether those songs will be about her ex-boyfriend, stepping into the shoes of Taylor Swift and mentor Beyonce or about her own self-growth, only time will tell. So stay tuned as the music world braces for the return of Amara Imani.
