Phew! I think this typeset took the most brain power because I had to translate a fic heavy with images as well as links to photos of actors and other media (a number of which have become dead in the years between) but I adore this fic since the day it was posted.
Had to track down age appropriate actor headshots (are some of them the exact ones? Uh, no, cause Internet Archive doesn't have a saved copy of the links) and ended up shoving them all into each movie section endnotes lol, and so so much QR codes+URLs.
But also I had to perform 3 exorcisms/deep cleaning on the printer cause it absolutely refused to emit any gosh darn magenta ink, so compounded frustration.
In the end I made a soft cover/paperback out of it with a naaaaarrow oxford hollow because I have a hot glue gun curse. The cardstock is a seriously pretty embedded glitter type, so shiny!

hi!! i’m trying to hunt down a muggle au fic where all the characters go to oxford. i cant remember much of the plot but i’m 100% sure it was set in oxford and the city/university was like its own character in a way. this is really vague but if any fics spring to mind please let me know!! <33
Hi there! The only fic that really springs to mind is between towers by tigrrmilk, but it's a magic au, not muggle.
If anyone has another idea/recommendation, please let me know!
edit: Some more possibilites thanks to @theaegeansea & @cutecreative!
i can't hide from you like i hide from myself by spellingmynamewrong
Of course Sirius remembers Remus. Of course he remembers when they first met, three months ago at some wine night hosted by Dorcas, and Remus had been brought along as a potential set-up opportunity for Lily, and once James figured that out, Sirius had been delegated to running interference and making small talk with Remus for the duration of the night, at which point he discovered, rather unfortunately, that Remus was not only unbearably gorgeous and interesting and certainly Lily’s type, but also his own type, and Sirius made the mistake of giving Remus his number and saying they should hang out, and then Remus pocketed his phone, smiled, and said, “Great, I’m always looking to make more friends!”
Or: a week in the life of Sirius Black, struggling Oxford student and (reluctant) hopeless romantic.
Never Knowing When To Stop by shinobi93
Remus Lupin starts Oxford filled with nerves and excitement, barely able to believe that he’s there and away from his overprotective parents. Sirius Black turns up in a haze of rebellion, ready to show his parents that they don’t control him. James Potter wants to prove his prowess at football, downplay his ability at Maths, and, it quickly turns out, catch the attention of a certain Chemistry student. And Peter Pettigrew? He just hopes he can keep up with it all.
Over the next four years, their quickly formed friendship will be subject to hijinks, drama, gossip, arguments, unfathomable traditions, and one incident involving a stag. It turns out getting a degree is only part of it.

oooh just saw your tags on the stucky post - do u have any good stucky fics to rec?? im talking like looong fics. shit that like changes ur life. i was never into stucky when the fandom was super active but now im like !!! theres a goldmine of good fics out there i just know it
yeah absolutely!!!! but okay so. a lot of the stucky fic i read, i read back in high school before i started obsessively bookmarking things on ao3. i'm almost positive there are some blind spots on this list because i'm just going off the things i do have bookmarked rn. like i also want to dive back into the tag at some point & see what stuff i've missed / forgotten.
THAT SAID pretty much all the big stucky fics i do remember were in my bookmarks so i'm working off those! also thank you so much for sending this because i queued that post & didn't actually end up going back to read any stucky fics. i want to reread everything now.
actual recs under the cut!!
sincerely, your pal by lettered (rated m, 65,620)
i will always be obsessed with an epistolary fic. 10/10
to memory now I can't recall by etharei (rated e, 102,600)
uses time travel in a really interesting way, with it almost acting as a bodyswap scenario between the past and present. really interesting device in a fic with bucky pov.
building from the ground up by emilianadarling (series, various ratings & various lengths w a total wordcount of 68,687)
soooo good. i remember the (chronologically) first & the (writing order) first in the series better than the other two, but they're all good!! spans time from during the war to after the events of the winter soldier.
you know i dreamed about you by napricot (rated e, 59,311)
dreamsharing!! underutilized fanfic trope!!!
between everything, yourself, and home by napricot (rated e, 24,396)
i reread this one more recently than a lot of the others on the list & it hit so good, definitely recommend it.
United States v. Barnes, 617 F. Supp. 2d 143 (D.D.C. 2015) by fallingvoices & radialarch (rated t, 20,605)
the formatting & framing & storytelling devices in this one go hard, like, i'm pretty sure it was one of the fics mentioned on that post. it'd be worth checking out for that alone except that the fic is just Also good.
the way to a man's heart by niitza & whatthefoucault (rated t, 43,837)
this is one of the stucky fics i think about all the time. food as a healing device hits every time and it's SO good in this one.
the size of perfection by phoenike (e, 31,193)
if you want a lot of 1940's angsting about what the supersoldier serum does to a guy's dick, this is the fic for you.
all the angels and the saints by speranza (rated e, 48,740)
in the authors note of this one it's described as "a motherfucking 95 year epic love story of socialism! science fiction! and hard core gay fucking!" so. worth a read for sure.
roll on by jaxington (rated m, 89,113)
the historical queer themes in this were so good!! the supporting characters & world built up Hit. also i forgot/never knew it was part of a three fic series that is 306,592 words long. definitely read those too.
steve rogers at 100: celebrating captain america on film by eleveninches, hellotailor, M_Leigh, neenya, saintsideways, & tigrrmilk (rated e, 10,228)
exactly what it sounds like. from what i remember this probably barely counts as a stucky fic but it's so fun.
tin soldiers by idrilka (rated t, 19,743)
another one where the formatting & framing & storytelling devices go hard!!
a line that goes all the way by napricot (rated e, 45,218)
realizing now this is the third napricot fic on the list so probably anything else you find by them will also hit!! this one's more recent than a lot of the other fics here but i remember really enjoying it.
tezeta (nostalgia) by vowelinthug (rated e, 20,140)
another more recent fic set in wakanda!! it's steve's turn to be a total maladjusted disaster <3
sparked up like a book of matches by sena (rated m, 26,734)
didn't remember a lot of this one from my bookmarks so i started reading it to jog the memory & now am going to continue reading it. the vibes are vibing.
always stay near me, for tomorrow i will have much to do by roguewrld (rated e, 39,990)
this one's framing isn't as wild as some of the others i've rec'ed but it's still a little noticeable. a great non-linear bucky centric fic.
there's nothing left of you by notallbees (rated e, 22,346)
a fic set during the war!! those are always fun!!! and by fun, i mean. you know. it's good though, very in bucky's head.
i can feel the cold changing us inside by tesselated (rated m, 24,140)
a really good post-winter soldier recovery fic.
might never be normal again (but who cares) by napricot (rated e, 51,540)
okay one last napricot rec from my bookmarks. tagged 'Steve's Slow Motion Midlife Crisis' so you know it's good.

HP Recs Fest: Day 7
Tumblr media
@hprecfest prompt: a canon-compliant fic
annual honesty (18703 words) by tigrrmilk (Wolfstar, Teen) and the podfic by RevolutionaryJo (2h)
“It is hard to keep the truth from clever friends,” Dumbledore had said, first. “I had hoped --” Remus had looked down at his hands. There were little, half-moon scars around his knuckles, too inconsequential to see unless light hit them at an angle and made them silvery with scar tissue. He wondered if other werewolves had these scars too, whether they were a telltale sign too mundane to have made it into the textbooks. Remus had hoped, too.
There is nothing quite like the pain of canon-compliant Wolfstar. This story is going to hurt your feelings, but it will be nice about it. This Remus is incredible, and the writing is so quiet and gentle and wistful, and it hurts so much.
I've enjoyed RevolutionaryJo's podfics for a long time and this one is no different. Her narration is matching the gentle tone of the writing so you hardly notice that you're getting stabbed in the heart repeatedly.

Jay's Wolfstar (Sirius/Remus) Rec List
Someone asked for a wolfstar rec list. It took me a bit to weed out some of the ones that have it as a side pairing, but here it is for anyone that is interested! I did end up cutting a ton of them out because I think it makes more sense to just rec the writer themselves-I had A LOT of them saved from one person. Some of these are also entire series, not just one fic. The full list is under the read more! Sorry in advance for not having any descriptions (they got deleted by tumblr) but if anyone wants my take on any of them, just ask! MIND THE TAGS AND WARNINGS!!!

leiakenobi's 2023 Fic Rec (aka, AO3 Wrapped)
Happy happy new year! For the second time, I maintained a records of all the fics I read and wrote over the course of the year. So naturally it's time to revisit some of my faves, as well as take a look at some of the numbers and stats that jumped out at me as interesting! (Including a little bit of a comparison between this year and last year.)
Fics I Read (Stats)
In 2023, I read 84 fics about 47 relationships (either platonic or romantic) across 36 different fandoms, totaling 366,788 words. This was a pretty dramatic downward shift from last year in every respect, perhaps most significantly reflected in the fact that in December of 2022 alone, I read nearly as many words as I did throughout the entirety of 2023. I also only read 10 fics or more in any given month twice: in February (helped along by my deep-dive into Poe Dameron's character tag) and in December (mostly thanks to Doctor Who and Yuletide). I think the much more limited reading I did is reflective of both some big life changes I went through (finishing my dissertation, moving, getting settled in a new job) and the fact that overall, my fandom interests over the past year were largely not things I was interested in reading fic for. (In the cases when there was even fic at all!)
One of the pieces of data I keep track of is which fandoms I read at least 5 fics for. This year, 4 fandoms hit the landmark (compared to 13 fandoms last year). No surprise, Star Wars was once again at the front of the pack with 22 fics, followed by Dimension 20 (7), Doctor Who (6), and Hannibal (5). Of these 4 fandoms, Doctor Who was the only one I didn't first read in January of 2023. (In fact, I didn't read it until after the first episode of the 60th anniversary specials in November!)
As is probably evident from the fandom spread, there's also not a ton of relationships that came out above the others, but as with fandoms, there are 4 relationships that I read at least 5 fics about. Poe Dameron/Rey came out on top with 11 fics, followed by Will Graham/Hannibal Lecter, Poe Dameron & Leia Organa, and Fourteen & Donna Noble all at 5 fics apiece.
Looking ahead, I'm considering keeping track of the most common Additional Tags that I tend toward, as well! I was reluctant to do it before, but I'm becoming more comfortable with the nuances of Excel, so I think it might be a fun addition to this data in the coming year.
But in any case, here's some of the particularly wonderful stuff I read this year.
Fics I Read (Recs)
Sisters, Past Present and Future by lizznotliz Dimension 20 | Saccharina Frostwhip & Ruby Rocks | 6,739 words | General Audiences
It starts with quiet good mornings and stilted how are yous, awkward invitations to brunch in the gardens and hesitant offers for yet another tour around the castle. They orbit each other so carefully, mindful not to start another war and desperate to find the kind of peace that they both desperately crave. - Ruby and Saccharina in Castle Candy, trying to figure out how to be sisters.
That Was So Long Ago by dovand Doctor Who | Fourteenth Doctor & Donna Noble | 1,953 words | General Audiences
The Doctor ends up making tea in Sylvia’s kitchen. - In which the Doctor actually talks about his feelings, for once.
It's Amazing What Soup Can Do by Aramley The Nice Guys | Jackson Healy/Holland March | 2,082 words | Teen
March blinked, slowly. “You made me chicken noodle soup?” “Campbells made you chicken noodle soup, don’t get carried away,” said Jackson. - March is sick and Jackson helps out.
a cooler death than this by afterism Our Flag Means Death | Blackbeard/Stede Bonnet | 3,708 words | Teen
Blackbeard dies in 1718. It takes Stede a couple more years to get out to sea.  (This is still a love story.)
Working Honeymoon by tigrrmilk Singin' in the Rain | Cosmo Brown/Don Lockwood/Kathy Selden | 4,769 words | Teen
If you weren’t getting married, you didn’t get to go on the honeymoon. Wasn't that how it was supposed to go?
The Möbius Waltz by ambiguously Star Wars | ST Trio & PT Trio | 4,676 words | General Audiences
Rey, Finn, and Poe accidentally wind up in the Clone Wars.
rare as the glimmer of a comet in the sky by blackleaders Star Wars | Poe Dameron/Rey | 1,315 words | Teen
They're arguing when it happens, because of course they are. But for once in their lives, it's about something utterly inconsequential, that has no bearing on the galaxy at large.
Today by hatstand Star Wars | Poe Dameron & Leia Organa | 1,369 words | General Audiences
The Starkiller blows and the good guys win and on D’Qar there’s a party, because what else do you do?
Fics I Wrote (Stats)
Meanwhile, in 2023 I wrote 59 fics about 40 relationships across 30 fandoms, totaling 84,529 words. Despite frankly a lot of writer's block, I managed to post at least one fic every month (particularly thanks to fic exchanges, for which I wrote 26 fics or 42% of my total fic output).
Again, Star Wars was the most common fandom by a hefty margin, clocking in at 10 fics. The two fandoms that came the closest were Dimension 20 and Succession with 4 fics each.
The overall relationship stats are not significant enough to make note of, but I do enjoy that two relationships — Beatrice/Benedick and Fourteen & Donna Noble — each ended up with 2 fics despite the fact that I first wrote them in December. (We're truly living our best David Tennant and Catherine Tate life over here.)
Anyway, enough of the data. Here's some fics I'm particularly proud of from this year, if you'd like to consider perhaps giving them a read.
Fics I Wrote (Recs)
wanna hold the hand inside you Dimension 20 | Adaine Abernant/Fabian Aramais Seacaster | 1,810 words | Teen
With the party split between hell and Arborly, Fabian and Adaine deal with some difficult feelings during the ensuing downtime.
Seasons Come, Seasons Go Gilmore Girls | Luke Danes/Lorelai Gilmore | 12,664 words | Teen
About a year after Lorelai landed on the steps of the Independence Inn, the whirlwind that was Liz Danes blew in.
the dose is the poison (we've had more than most) Hannibal | Will Graham/Hannibal Lecter | 4,657 words | Mature
Will awoke with a dull ache across his body and a fog over his mind that diluted or obscured all memories save for one: he and Hannibal had danced with the Dragon, and they had won.
Contempt, Farewell Much Ado About Nothing | Beatrice/Benedick | 1,429 words | Mature
Three times Beatrice kissed Benedick, and one time she didn't.
gentle when he wants to be Moon Knight | Layla El-Faouly/Marc Spector | 1,446 words | Mature
“You know you don’t have to do this every time.” Marc stills at once, his fingers curled into Layla's belt loops as he blinks up at her across her belly. There’s a teasing smile on her face, at least, but-- “Do you not want me to?” - or, Marc Spector and his pussy eating problem.
No Wise King Without A Wise Woman Ready or Not | Daniel Le Domas/Grace Le Domas | 12,136 words | Mature
Silence hangs over the table for just long enough to tell Grace that things might not be going as well as she'd hoped. “It’s… blank?” Tony echoes. “Are you sure?” “I mean…” Grace flips the card around in her hand to examine the back before showing it to Alex. “I think so, unless I’m… missing something.”
The Steele Dabbling Job Remington Steele and Leverage crossover | Laura Holt/Remington Steele | 2,200 words | General Audiences
Mr. Steele leaned down to speak softly. "I don't mean to alarm you, Miss Holt, but if I'm not mistaken, I believe an old colleague of mine has just entered the gallery." Ever proficient in discretion, Laura had no sooner processed these words than she made a point of fussing to retrieve something from her shoulder bag, sneaking a quick glance toward Charlotte in the midst of it. "Not a blonde," she muttered, casting him a look. "Color me surprised."
in the pedestal light Ted Lasso | Trent Crimm/Ted Lasso | 2,410 words | Teen
Trent greeted Coach Lasso at the Crown & Anchor with no particular expectation. Most likely, he knew, Ted would offer only a vague explanation for his departure which Trent would accept, and savour – an exclusive was still an exclusive – and have to tweak and contort into something interesting enough to publish. What he could not have anticipated was this: sitting on the sofa in Ted's flat, waiting on Ted to pour him a drink and trying to parse through just how he ended up there. Perhaps more importantly, Trent was trying to parse through what was going to happen once that drink was finished.

literary wolfstar recs part 2 (modern classics/post-2010)
hallo! Okurr so this is officially part 2 of my “literary” (by which I mostly just mean fucking beautiful) wolfstar recs & it covers the various post-2010 gems that I’ve managed to discover/read thus far. Posted this to reddit back on Remus’s bday because I’m a big nerd & thought that would be cute, but I’ve tidied it up just slightly since then bc the original post was an utterly a spur-of-the-moment thing & riddled with typos, etc.
As a general disclaimer, I abandoned fandom in like 2009-ish & have only been back for a few months so I can only imagine I’ve probably missed SO many lovely stories/authors (!!) and can only beg their forgiveness in advance. Still, wanted to post what I've got so far & hopefully one day I shall update or add a part 3 when I’ve had more time to read/explore contemporary ("contemporary") fandom.
And now, in no particular order whatsoever – modern wolfstar classics <3 -
we build our own unfolding & longsdune by @imochan.
Already recced imchan on the last list, I know, but these two were written post-2010 (meaning I just discovered them within the last 2 or 3 months lol) and are fucking beautiful, so. "We Build Our Own Unfolding" is a post-Hogwarts get-together about the death of Remus's mother, and "Longsdune" is an atmospheric multi-era fic that centers around an abandoned train station. Anyway, again, everything imochan writes is painfully gorgeous.
a history of sexuality, vol. 1 by istajmaal.
I think this is the author's only wolfstar fic but ohmygosh, it's so charming and also just achingly lovely. As the title would imply, it focuses on Sirius's sexual awakening & schoolboy crush on Remus but - God. It's just beautiful and heartbreaking and perfect. (Very minor spoiler alert but this fucking line: “Sorry I can’t make you feel normal” / “You’ve driven me so mad I don’t even care.” Kills me every time.)
annual honesty by @alwaysalreadyangry aka tigrrmilk.
This is such a beautiful and original take on the Prank, very dreamy (both in vibe and literal content, lol); Snape utilizes legilimency & dream magic in his attempts to discover what the Marauders are hiding. Walburga's also a creepy legilimens in this one, and ever since reading this fic I truly can't imagine her any other way.
grounded (& the rest of the listeneise series) by @yeats-infection aka fluorescentgrey.
Okay so fluorescentgrey has written SO many wolfstar fics and as of yet I still haven't read the vast majority of them but, but. I would be willing to bet that they are all amazing, because what I have read of hers so far is so stunningly beautiful and distinctive. I recced "Grounded" because it's a personal favorite, a Grimmauld Era canon-ish story with so many unbearably and achingly gorgeous lines, but it's actually the third part in a series (Listeneise) & every story in the series is wonderful.
EXILE/RETURN (& the rest of the empire falling series) by @polytony aka zambla.
This one's actually the last part of a series (Empire Falling), and everything in the series is beautiful and absolutely worth reading, but this one happens to be my favorite so it is now the one I'm linking here :). This is a non-magic AU and homage to Derek Jarman; Remus is a Jarman-esque artist who dies of AIDS and Sirius his surviving partner, who reads Remus’s old journals and reflects on their lives together as he travels Wales. The writing is fucking beautiful and it HURTS.
stick season by mombasas.
Such a sweet, charming premise (in which Remus unwittingly becomes the go-to helping-hand for "all things monthly" at Hogwarts) and the prose is wonderfully sharp and clean. And the PINING. This fic is pure UST/pining/etc., and it's so, so lovely.
between the moon and the stars by llassah.
A beautiful, imagistic, atmospheric get-together fic, in which James is distracted and Remus and Sirius spend most of the summer before seventh year attached at the mouth. This one is just so pretty.
light in august by orestesfasting aka @newsom.
Ahhh, the Sirius-visits-Remus-over-the-summer fic to end all Sirius-visits-Remus-over-the-summer fics. A charming, lovely, gorgeously imagistic get-together story (in which Remus and Hope Lupin are both, like, adorably granola). I mean, what else is there even to say here. This story is beautiful and happy and just, wow.
all manner of wolves & leave the children behind by @montpahrnah aka montparnasse.
Montparnasse is another one who has apparently written a LOT of wolfstar and I am just one busy human who has still not read sooo many of her fics, but they're probably all amazing because her prose is truly beautiful. "All Manner of Wolves" is a short sweet little first-kiss fic, and "Leave the Children Behind" is a long, beautiful Lie Low at Lupin's story. Again, her prose, her imagery/descriptive language, her use of metaphor . . . utterly stunning.
of witness testimony & in lieu of beaujolais by @aeridi0nis.
Omg ANOTHER author with so many fics that I've yet to read, but istg one day I will because her writing is so original and gorgeous - atmospheric and richly imagistic, full of creative metaphors, I mean - I could go on. I love everything I've read by her. "of witness testimony" is this lovely and funny and yet PAINFUL, utterly painful story from Peter's POV, in which he observes (and the other oblivious Marauders do not, lol) Sirius's immense affection for/growing attraction to Remus; "in lieu of beaujolais" is a charming post-Hogwarts story in which Remus and Sirius get a flat and sometimes hook-up and spend quite a lot of time misunderstanding each other/talking around their feelings.
static by dustmouth.
Okay this is actually a graphic fic/comic/etc. (so, pictures + words!), and probably I was the last person on earth to discover it, but anyway, it's haunting and beautiful and I can't let it go unrecced.
to fill a gap by @sqvalors.
An era-shifting (mainly post-Halloween & Lie Low at Lupin's) fic with, just, such lovely writing, and so much hurt, and - ah. Featuring an epigraph of obscure contemporary poetry and Lyall Lupin as a somewhat reserved but actually fucking amazing father. This story is just gut-punchy and achy and gorgeous.
where your teeth meet the flesh by @squidgilator.
THE FIRST SCENE. This story, this fucking story. I must rec it because it contains the most stunningly PSYCHO characterization of eleven-year-old Remus, and I cannot even. That freaking first scene has become one of my all-time favorite fanfic moments *ever.* Anyhow the story features various crucial bites in the lives of Remus & Sirius. Also, it is lovely and angsty and tender and so very good. And another author with so many wolfstar fics that istg one day I will read! Because this.
<3<3<3
p.s. tried to tag all the authors I could find on tumblr, but pls lmk if I missed anyone.

Fest: RS Games 2017: Team Remus
Author: alwaysalready (tigrrmilk) Rating: Teen Word Count: 8,857 Type: Magic!AU, University!AU
Summary: Through the doorway at the end of the entrance hall, he could see a wide portion of the small quad ahead. Green and lush. It was early October, and the sun was shining, thank the lord. Or at least thank Merlin. It was Michaelmas. And Remus was taking up a place at Oxford to study English.
Comments: Gorgeously written and incredibly magical. I love the atmosphere of Oxford, and mixed in with magic, it comes alive in a sparkling, mystical way. Remus’ struggles with connecting, and discovering magic, friends, and a place of belonging, was beautifully done. I’m really glad I read this one.
Favorite Quote:
Remus thought about the books of folklore and history and old, old charms in his satchel. He thought about the brittle plastic cases wrapped around them, and the way they would crinkle under his fingers. It was a sensation he could conjure up -- like James and the thermos, like Sirius and the garden.
And again, the sky felt like it was blooming, and the garden felt like it was flowering, and Remus was almost ready to choke on the heady summer air. Old, old air.
But he didn’t. Not quite.

For the tropes: coffee shop, texting, office romance
Coffee shop: F+. It’s not a bad trope, I just have no interest in it whatsoever.
Texting: C-. Texting fics used to be a little guilty pleasure of mine, when the mood was right, but after a while they all start looking the same (and very few authors finish them in a satisfactory manner, and just as few manage to get the voices right), so I don’t have a rec. Will still read a good new one, though, if I see it.
Office romance: B-. I haven’t read that many, but those I’ve read were pretty entertaining and fun, for example:

Ria’s Top 10 Canon-verse Fics
Tumblr media
So, I’m a little surprised I’ve held off on doing this particular Top 10 as long as I have, if only because this does cover the majority of stucky fics that have been written. It also contains some of my all-time favorite fics, which I will be screaming about below. You’ve been warned. But anyway, this is getting down into the nitty-gritty of why I love stucky -- the original ‘verse, with the original storyline (although there are a fair few canon-divergent fics in here, I’m sure). Pure, unadulterated Steve Rogers loving Bucky Barnes. What more can you ask for, honestly? You could ask for it to be legit canon, but lmao, no, we don’t expect things like that, especially not from the MCU writers. Also, some of the fics I might’ve included in this list are recced in an ask I got a while ago, so go check that out for some mostly-canon angst. Regardless, here are my personal Top 10 canon-verse fic recs:
1. Ain’t No Grave (Can Keep My Body Down) by spitandvinegar. Alright, buckle up friends, because this is the end-all, be-all of my favorite stucky fics. I have reread it probably four or five times in the four years I’ve been in this fandom, and it hits me just as hard every single time. This is canon-divergent post-WS, where Bucky’s come-down from his Hydra conditioning is accompanied by a drug addiction and two smart-mouthed kids he rescued from the streets. Steve literally loves nothing more than he loves Bucky and he is determined to bring Bucky home, kids included. There is just -- so much I love about this story. I can’t possibly fit it all into a little blurb. But this is my favorite stucky fic, hands-down. It’s a must-read if you can handle the incredibly sensitive topics it covers, which means it’s not for everyone. But it has my highest seal of approval.
2. Perilous Underside of the World by eyres. I reread this recently because I was in the mood for both angst and badass Bucky, and this delivered in spades. Steve’s been kidnapped and held captive by Ross for months, tortured and experimented on, and it as devastating as it sounds. Cue Bucky and the rest of Team Cap coming in for a rescue mission and an adrenaline-filled adventure through the Antarctic wasteland. The summary says it all, honestly: Steve throws a snow-mobile at a helicopter in this one.
3. Steve Rogers at 100: Celebrating Captain America on Film by eleveninches, febricant, hellotailor, M_Leigh, neenya, tigrrmilk. A lot of fics are enhanced by visual media, usually some type of fanart, but few are incomplete without it -- this fic is one of them. It’s a look through in-universe media depictions of Captain America over the years, with real-life casting and amazingly done posters for the movies. The various Avengers are there to react to it all and it’s nothing short of glorious.
4. Came Back Haunted* by Brenda. You guys should know how much I love Brenda’s writing, since I waxed poetic about it when I was doing the rec for Prince Charming, but I’m going to say it again: I love her writing. And this is yet again another fic series that will tear at your heart and stitch you back together again. It features, among other things: Bucky and Thor friendship; a road-trip; dark Steve; and bearded Steve! All good things. It’s been a while since I’ve read this, but I’m pretty assured there is much angst to be found here as well, plus the requisite happy ending, because, as previously mentioned, I don’t do unhappy endings.
5. Tender is the Ghost* by Hark_bananas. OH WOW. Okay. So. I started reading this series right before the second part had been published, and I just. Fell in love with it. The first part is set right after Bucky turned himself into SHIELD, and it features Steve and Bucky re-learning about each other (and themselves) through a closed door, considering Steve isn’t allowed to see Bucky face-to-face. And the second part picks up once Bucky is ready to go home with Steve, and it’s. So sweet. Bucky and Steve recovering, together, and finding love along the way. Bucky loves plants. What more could you ask for?
6. Infinite Coffee and Protection Detail* by owlet. I think this is probably one of the most popular series in this fandom, and for good reason. It’s Bucky setting himself a new goal after the fallout of Project Insight, and that goal is a protection detail for Steve Rogers, well before he has his memories to back up the need for such a thing. Bucky and Steve don’t get romantically involved until much later in the series, but their friendship is a thing of beauty in this, as is Bucky learning how to be human again, through coffee, grilled cheese, and The Olds, the elderly neighbors he comes to care for while he’s watching Steve’s back from across the street. I adore this series and I think most people would be hard pressed to find anything they don’t like about it.
7. The Blood Will Dry by castiowl. There are clones in this one. It might be the sci-fi nerd in me, but honestly that’s enough information to hook me already. But this fic is a fantastic, gripping read from start to finish, and the clones are only a part of that. It’s another fic that written right after The Winter Soldier came out, and so it has a lot of the hallmarks of that era: Bucky dealing with his conditioning, coming back to himself and Steve, Hydra-hunting missions, some kidnapping, unfortunate throwbacks to torture, and Steve having to figure his own shit out right alongside Bucky.
8. To Stop My Mind From Wandering by Lynchy8. This one is a little shorter than the other fics on this list, but it’s still one of my favorites, and for a much different reason than the others. This is Bucky and Steve separated for the majority of the fic, with Bucky taking up residence in Steve abandoned apartment while he’s off being Captain America and also looking for Bucky. Bucky does home repairs for Steve. Steve broods and worries. Bucky heals on his own terms and it’s lovely. And the ending is very sweet when Steve finally does come home.
9. despite the threatening sky and shuddering earth (they remained) by praximiter. AKA The Mask Fic. Which. Jesus Christ. This should’ve gone in with my angst fic recs, because this will hurt you, in the best possible way. Bucky’s mask doesn’t come off, and so there’s no pivotal moment of realization for Steve, no hellfire determination to ensure Bucky survives their fights against all odds. But he’s saved regardless, and the rest of the fic is the team trying to communicate with him, learn his story, all while Bucky can’t speak and the mask physically cannot come off. Like I said, it’s a recipe for Pain, but the pay-off is more than worth it, in my opinion.
10. waiting for the winter by coldhope. Also just recently reread this one, and I loved the progression of Steve and Bucky’s relationship here as well. It also has Bucky befriending all of the Avengers, not just Natasha or Sam; getting to see from other characters’ POV how their perception of Bucky changes as the fic goes on was so interesting, since it’s not something I’ve seen done in many fics. Which also might be a personal thing on my part, who knows. Anyway. Good fic. Steve and Bucky don’t take forever to figure out their feelings, but they do take a while to get on the same page with each other, which should surprise absolutely no one who has ever read a stucky fic before.
*series, not individual story titles
