this article about a lawyer and apparently known and respected amateur ecologist tracking down the habitat and proving the continued existence of a particular fish species was very enjoyable (i love any stories where a hobbyist gets to make a genuine contribution to the field) and also taught me about the existence of iEcology, in which researchers do shit like track migration patterns of marine species based on sightings in social media posts, which is soooooooo neat

headcanons i have about Craig the scientist :)

as are most of the characters i have headcanons for, Craig is on the autism spectrum. he has a flat effect to his voice and facial expressions, doesn't really get most social cues, doesn't know how to react to others in pain the "right" way, misunderstands metaphors and speaks in quite a direct manner because it makes the most sense to his brain. he's quite a literal thinker. he also tends to hyperfixate so hard on a task that he forgets his basic needs and hygene, and thus has quite an unkempt look underneath that hazmat suit of his (which i will get into later!). Barry often ends up needing to get Craig something to eat because of how long he hyperfixates on something.

Craig sometimes doesn't exactly pay attention to his tone of voice, so sometimes he can say something that, to him, sounds completely normal, but because of his tone, can end up sounding really ominous to other people by accident ("We know who you are, Barry.")

Craig has traumatic cataract in his left eye (or wherever the fuck craig's visor crack is supposed to be in canon lol) from the explosion in 'Level 2' and is half blind in that eye. his eye has a very clouded look as a result of the injury. he's also got a huge scar there too that required some pretty gnarly stitches later, and his skin is almost completely numb around that area.

Craig also never really had the best eyesight before the injury, so he's always wearing these big ol' nerdy glasses underneath his helmet. and yes, they are tacked together with a band-aid lol

Craig is one of the few scientists who is not a clone of Peter Simpkins, the late friend of both Professor Brains and (in my headcanon'd canon) Craig. i like to think that Craig and Simpkins knew each other when they were first recruited by Legitimate Research and was pretty close to both him and Brains, and since Simpkins died, Brains has kind of taken more of a liking towards Craig (mostly out of loneliness and needing someone to help around at the lab, but he has a genuine fondness for him under his demanding and angry exterior).

There's a bit of a fan theory that Craig is the same guy as the scientist in the 'Robot Bird' rock opera, which i like to believe is the case. i mean, he's got the same monotone voice as Craig, it's gotta be him. i hope this does end up becoming canon because i think it'd make for an interesting conflict between Barry and Craig!!

Craig may or may not be related to Lab Lady.

Craig's counterpart in the mirror universe is named Kayla.

Craig is demiromantic and is questioning his sexuality (he thinks he might be bi or pan), though he definitely knows he loves Barry <3

Craig has an unhealthy habit of wiping his embarrassing memories, like, a lot. he wipes memories of awkward accidents in the lab, particularly painful failures, and most importantly, the memories of losing literally all his stuff and his career to Barry, which is why he doesn't immediately recognise him in the shorts. Craig has a lot of trouble recounting stories from the past because of this memory-wiping and felt a sense of emptiness, which getting hit in the head certainly didn't help with, so he tried inventing that apple in the Multiverse Madness event to get some of them back. it was pure dumb luck that Barry didn't end up witnessing what happened to Craig in the 'Robot Bird' opera and both are completely unaware of the disastrous can of worms that could have opened. bro's gonna end up like wallflower blush if he doesn't keep that memory erasing under control

and finally...

under his helmet, Craig has messy dirty-blonde hair, a rounded face that has a few stray facial hairs he forgot to shave, a long scar down the left side of his face, hazel coloured eyes and pale skin. this design is inspired by the designs made by @dexterno-artz and @schnabel53 respectively :D

this is a sketch of my finalised(ish) craig design!!! i've shown earlier versions of this guy in a couple of older posts but i haven't really revised his design much until now. i kinda had the idea of him looking like a stereotypical nerd and then made him messier. i might tone the amount of hair he has down a tiny bit but also i really like the nerdy bird's nest thing he has goin on :) i like to think he literally hasn't brushed his hair in several weeks and it's just become a bird's nest from nights of staying up doing science stuff

how i feel about barry tbh. he's literally so dumb i love him

drew this as a quick side profile sketch to get a general idea of how i want to draw him from this angle. he's talking to barry offscreen and falling in love with him <3

stupid little comic with a stupid little interaction that would definitely happen between these stupid little guys <3 barry being a little asshole every now and then is very entertaining to me. i need to see him antagonising craig and starting an old couple bickering argument with craig, that would heal me i think

i think i'll post more of this design in the future, i really quite like it a lot :)

It feels SO MUCH better than hooking a texture into a brush and working on a canvas that just...doesn't match it, or applying a texture afterward. BUT ALSO they're gonna be updating it soon, and adding not just standard digital niceties, but also METALLIC. PAINTS. Plus more texture stuff you can control, and even better texture reactivity, but METALLIC! PAINTS!! USING THE BUILT-IN LIGHTING AND TEXTURE SHENANIGANS, INSTEAD OF HAVING TO MESS AROUND WITH WRANGLING/OUTSOURCING EFFECTS YOURSELF

And the pre-order price from now until November 30th is ONLY $30 for the Pro version (which I absolutely recommend!), when the price is usually $150 (!!). The Pro preorder price will increase to $50 from December 1st to the 13th, then full price when it releases on December 14th. And they don't do subscription! I'm not GREAT at working with a House of Mouse casual crossover setting, or something similar to @evildisneydorks Mansion of Villains as much as I LOVE crossovers like those, I think the way I write AUs and canonxoc is a little different than that (Not a shot or a dig at anyone, Im just different!!!) but I do wanna offer up my one little nugget to the greater Disney villains community:

The other villains would have no idea he's dating Ego. Like...NO idea. They all assumed ''Hes catholic so he's probably homophobic or something'' and just never bothered to ever look into it further. Which worked for Frollo. It's his business. Frollo's good at keeping his personal life to himself so in the handful of times he's (for some reason) been along on villain excursions he just never mentions Ego. He's not one to brag about intimate affairs.

I'd love to talk about some neato things I got to draw in the comic! Spoiler warning for some contents below! If you haven't read anything yet, come back after reading the comic!

Let's start off with the cover thumbnails! I was more inclined to do A since it wouldn't spoil the big surprise Orbot and Cubot had in store! Otherwise I probably would've gone with B or D! It has that bombastic party sort of feel that I think would've been super fitting!

Here, Eggman is temporarily staying at one of his many bases throughout the world after the collapse of his Eggperial city! This base is inspired by Industria from Future Boy Conan and a bit of Eggmanland!

He also sure loves his chicken and fries!

A little beachside balcony in Green hill! I felt like we generally don't get structures there as much so I thought it'd be a nice addition!

The design on the floor is the stage from the JP Sonic X intro! It gets covered up by snow after but still neat to include!

Look at this magnificent cast of characters! I wanted to use the poses that each pair had when they were first seen together! I'd considered giving Big his winning animation pose from SA1 but alas no space haha!

Cubot's taped on eye brow gag was one I suggested and it's a reference to the same gag from FLCL!

Lil sonic team logo Iasmin asked for! Sonic sure knows to appreciate himself! Good on him.

Amy and cream's spread of delicious looking food beautifully rendered by the coloring god Reggie! I wanted to include all their items from the Official Sonic the Hedgehog Cookbook! I remember seeing the story Iasmin made and it really felt like it could be something you'd see in a sonic anime episode if it were made nowadays. I drew the comic with some influence from Sonic X because of that. I think the most telling detail fans might notice is the constant 3 spines for Sonic.

And, yeah, this is... kinda hammy... but it's still watchable!

He's enjoying the live tweeting from paleontologists who are ROASTING the thing to a lovely golden brown. Has choked on his noodles like three times already. It's great! But now? They are arguing over what the dinosaurs actually looked like again... and??

And, look, maybe it's the good mood and boredom. Maybe it's having the house to himself. Maybe it's his parents finally encouraging him to use his "ghostiness" for SCIENCE(tm)(!) the other day. Could even be his bad idea impulse acting up again, buuuuut.....

One hot summer day, feeling too lazy to do much and in need of some relaxing, they decided to find a shady spot out in a pasture and fill up an old horse trough for Jimmy to cool down in while Tango lovingly preens his feathers. It’s quiet besides Tango humming and the soft sound of bugs, and Jimmy takes a moment to peek at his rancher and get little flip floppies in his stomach like he does every time he looks at him.

Double life is where I entered the fandom thanks to my buddy @aquaquadrant and I’ve NEVER BEEN MORE GRATEFUL!!! Thanks to her and the ranchers I’ve gotten to meet so many people and have so many good memories with this NEATO group of fellow fans~

(It was surprisingly hard to find a recent photo of myself with a camera, so I opted for one at DPAC, a place I shoot, and one with a small cat, which is about the size of a camera)

And the thing about modern cameras is, corrupted files are not common.

I probably hadn't seen even something minor in, what, a year or two?

Until this, yesterday.

Which would have been the weird thing.

Except that this is a completely-different glitch than the original I wanted to show you.

Seriously! The instant I viewed the image large for the first time, the original version vanished, permanently.

Zooming in it's cool and all, but I wanted to get to the bottom of things.

The file itself was corrupted, sure, but clearly the display/conversion process was crucial.

As a last-ditch effort, I tried importing it with multiple unglitched portraits.

BINGO!

This was it! This was the extra-haunted version I wanted to show!

Sure, it would still revert to 120% scrambling if I double-clicked it, but hey, all the best spookiness is ephemeral.

We'd found our Halloween post, lost it... lost it some more, lost it again, and then finally got it back...

...only, erm... at the cost of losing our sanity.

On that note, where did you get the name Verres? Most characters' surnames seem to be either fairly common ones or made-up names relevant to their character, I can't find anything about the name 'Verres' except a obscure ancient Roman guy.

Verres is an example of younger me thinking it would be neato to use Foreign words for last names, and trusting that translation was super easy and straightforward.

Basically, I was trying to make Tedd’s last name the French word for “glasses”.

Now, I’m not 100% sure about this, but my understanding is that Verres would be less “glasses on your face”, and more “glasses you fill with wine”.

Which I’m not going to say is UN-fitting, but not what I was going for. Be careful if using words from a language you don’t speak, everyone. Even if you’ve got a dictionary, it can be like a game of telephone, and you might only think you’ve got the right word.
