Need to reblog myself here because I only read the notes on this post afterwards. Everyone who, like me, immediately thought "oh yes this is a cool thing", please go read the notes as well. Of COURSE sign language is a language, and just like any spoken language all of our computers are still very very middling at translating, and when it comes to the fine nuances they probably always will be.

Reminder to myself: it's tempting to read about something and immediately form an opinion without really knowing all that much about it, and consequently some of those opinions are bound to be ill-informed. That goes for both good and bad stuff. I want to keep my mind open and unjudge the world.

A computer science student named Priyanjali Gupta, studying in her third year at Vellore Institute of Technology, has developed an AI-based model that can translate sign language into English.
