keep promises that u make to urself : just like how if u know someone who continuously makes promises to do something, yet they never act upon it, you won't trust that person or believe them if they promise u something else. this is also the same with urself. ur new years resolutions? ur goals that you've had for a while but never ever did? all those promises that you've made to yourself and the ones that you haven't followed up on will lessen trust with urself. do what u say you'll do. "stand on business" and if u know that u won't be able to deliver or do what u say you would, dont say it. dont tell urself promises that u won't be able to keep. once u start keeping ur own promises, you'll start to build trust within urself.

hold yourself accountable : just a quick disclaimer but when i say holding urself accountable i do NOT mean punishing urself!! when u find urself falling into old and fruitless patterns you need to hold urself accountable and make sure that u straighten up. the thing about our relationship with self is that a relationship needs BOUNDARIES. you need to set boundaries with urself. what will u or what will u not do? ur non-negotiables?

and when u find urself crossing boundaries within yourself take the BIGGEST step back. the key to forming a healthy relationship with urself is to balance being strict and gentle with urself. strict in the sense that ur the only one that can get u to where u wanna be, and gentle in the sense that ur best won't look the same every single day and u should also listen to urself and what u want, without having to compromise on ur boundaries. kind of finding that middle line is important, bcuz when we're too lenient with ourselves, we get too comfortable and that leads me into my next point...

where growth begins : u cannot expect to grow if ur too comfortable and honestly, this is why most people stay stagnant. its bcuz being comfortable FEELS GOOD. but growth will almost never happen when ur comfortable, on the contrary growth can only happen outside of ur comfort zone. if u want better things for urself, ur simply gonna have to DO BETTER.

the importance of ur self concept : even if ur not familiar with or u dont practice conscious manifesting/law of assumption, i think that working on ur self concept can still be such a fruitful thing to do. i say this because self concept is the way that u view urself in relation to ur desires/goals. its seeing urself as worthy and powerful, and truly grasping ur potential to do great things. a way to start with ur self concept is with affirmations! start telling urself about urself in a positive connotation. you're unstoppable <3

putting it into practice : start small, challenge urself a little bit every day. do one hard thing a day, doing so will build ur confidence bcuz u won't be so daunted by ur big goals when you've already done so many hard things. when u see something challenging instead of thinking "oh i can't do this" you'll have confidence in urself and what u are capable of. oftentimes when we have goals, we kick ourselves out of rooms before we've even tried to get in them bcuz we think "im not good enough" or "im not worthy" which isnt true at ALL. dont shoot urself in the foot. thats self sabotage. and thats not hot.

motivating urself : if u remind urself of your "why" then you'll have reason to stay consistent and truly try. i recommend asking urself the tougher questions, like "what do i want out of my life?" or "am i truly happy and if not what can i do to get there?" once you've decided what u want out of life make a VISION BOARD and actively pursue your dreams. u can't actively pursue something if u dont know what it is. so i advise u to remind urself whenever u feel that u need it of your "why", your driving cause. having that motivation, and actively pursuing and keeping the promises that u make to urself -> will then build ur confidence in yourself to the point where your betting on urself bcuz u know that no matter what cards you are dealt, you'll prosper.

Though as smoke rose from the lip and you realised how these days most things seemed just that — so fleeting and lovely — you were grateful that joyful tears now took your former sorrow's lost place.

The man by your side put his hand to your back as you poured the cool drink into glasses.

This time last week, you'd been coping okay but still hanging onto all those what-ifs. Had you have passed, what would your life look like compared to what it was then, as you thought it? Now though, there were no questions in your mind of how it had been meant to happen. Your eyes sought him out at the thought, as they always did, just to find his already on you. It seemed now though, looking at Bucky, that there was only you two in the room. There wasn't Sarah, chiding her boys — your godchildren — who ran about the small space; there wasn't even Sam who was laughing, and trying — failing miserably, though — not to show it.

it gets even worse two years later when she finds out shes also anomaly! but unlike her brother, seori causes an incident of projectile vomiting after a particularly envious moment where her family forgets her birthday and instead, spends the day with her brother. it is messy and disgusting and it happens in the town center. no one forgets. and seori is no longer there in the shadows, she's actively cast out, whispers about why she cant be more like her brother and this is why anomalies should not be given rights

it takes seori some time to figure out her powers but she gets the hang out of it. not that it matters lol shes the black sheep, the 'villain' because goddamn shes literal poison. even her family treats her that way

she doesn't believe those words until one day she gets into a heated argument with her family. tells her mum that shes a person too and wails her father that no one has called her by her name in years and she's nothing but a stain in their family. they don't deny it and in a fit of rage and hurt and anger, she manages to cause irreversible brain damage to her brother

and that is the moment seori realizes she is the villain everyone talks about and she is the monster (doesnt help that her pupils are dark and her veins are black) !!! not a pretty look (think the monsters in sweet home before they transform kind of vibe) and so she runs

runs and runs and runs to seoul where she gets by on illegal means. she is ashamed of the things she has done (e.g., disrupting the storeowners vision long enough to get food to eat, sent someone into unconsciousness and pretended to be their granddaughter caring for them to get a house to stay, batting doe-eyes to boys who will buy her a pack of ramen) and since then shes actively working on being a better person

swears to keep her feelings in control, only uses her powers when justified (although her moral compass is cracked)

Do they show up on your tiktok fyp?? Do you just search up whatever topic you wanna read about on google scholar? first of all....free urself from the tiktok fyp i am begging u <3 like. ok i am sure there are people on there who are sharing academic articles and such but....more often with tiktok at least in my experience u just end up getting stuck in an endless scroll rather than actually following up on any interesting reading/research suggestions. also i think it is just like. a valuable and enriching skill to be able to think of things on ur own that u want to learn about and then go and find resources urself! like. approach tiktok w caution perhaps it could be helpful for some but i worry a bit that we are all becoming a little too reliant on algorithms to feed us Content, y'know?

anyway! as for how i find papers 2 read that interest me! most often it is a matter of finding something that sparks my interest + then going down a rabbit hole. and there are soooooo many ways to do this!! the internet is an amazing resource!!!! here is a list of some ways that i find interesting articles:

tumblr <3 lol i follow various blogs that post interesting stuff abt theory + academia every so often, and if i see a quote that interests me i'll go and try to find the article it came from! (you could also use tiktok this way if you've found some good people to follow! my main hesitation w tiktok is just that. it's an endless scroll + an algorithm which are both 2 things that i find distracting, and why i prefer tumblr)

substack - same kinda deal as tumblr; i subscribe to bloggers who write about topics that interest me and if they cite research in their posts i'll go try to find that research to read it myself

news articles/blog posts/essays that i come across online - again, if there's some interesting research cited, i'll go and try to find it

search by writer - if you keep hearing about an academic or someone suggests "oh read some so-and-so," go and look up so-and-so and see what they've written + what u can find online for free! most really famous/influential academics will have some free pdfs of their more influential work floating around online, and for smaller/niche academics--email them!

along the same lines - if u find an article or essay or speech by an academic and u like it, go find their biography page on the website of whatever school they teach at! schools will usually list professors' work, or at least a few examples, and you can find more stuff to read from that same person whose article you enjoyed. this is especially helpful if ur researching something kinda niche

wikipedia! people shit on wikipedia all the time as if it's not a "real source" but that's simply false! wikipedia is a great jumping-off point if you're interested in a broad topic but don't know where to start. go scroll through the wikipedia article about said topic and see what's cited there to get an idea of where you might be able to find some interesting articles/research to narrow ur focus!

look through the bibliography/citations on other research! if ur reading a book or article on an interesting topic + want to learn more, actually take a minute to scan through the citations and see if any titles catch ur eye!

ask people for recommendations! if u have an old/current professor or a friend or something who u know is interested in the same topic as u, ask if they have any reading recommendations!

if ur a university student--take advantage of that shit!!! look thru the papers on ur syllabus and scan the citations of the most interesting ones for further reading or go look up the writers u like best from the course to find more stuff they've written! look at the class listings for classes u aren't taking and if ur interested, ask those professors if they'd be willing to share their reading lists with you! keep an eye out for free lectures or events on new topics that interest you as a jumping-off point for finding new things to learn about! ask ur friends in other majors what they're learning about and go look it up if it interests you!

go to the library and look through the nonfiction section for topics ur interested in; check out books with cool titles! if they're boring, u can just return them

go to thrift stores or used bookstores and do the same thing! look for nonfiction books with interesting titles! i loooooooooove love love love looking through gender studies sections of bookstores for nonfiction--and then if i find a book i like, guess what that book's gonna cite?? more articles + books!!!!!! there is so much research + knowledge in the world just waiting to be shared!!!!

anyway. these are just some ways that i have found interesting new things to learn about! it sounds like u are currently a student--and like, trust me, i get that when ur constantly being assigned readings for classes it can just become a drag. but college is an AMAZING resource; i still go back and reference old notes from school to find research that i'm interested in, and some of my classes introduced me to articles that i still return to + cite today. research can be so so so fun + rewarding when ur just doing it for the joy of learning; the key really is to treat it like a little spiderweb. maybe most of ur assignments are boring, but this one article for class was really interesting and u actually find urself wanting to learn more--look at the research that article cited! google the names of the writers to see what else they've written! ask ur prof if they have any more suggestions similar to that article! the possibilities are endless!!

+ if ur a student, ur institution probably has access to a whole bunch of research databases where u can find articles + books for free, which is amaaaaaaaazing take advantage of that shit. but i am not currently a student, so my process for finding articles usually goes:

google + see if a free pdf magically pops up (happens more often than you'd think honestly)

failing that -- if it's a book, i check the online collection at my library + also on openlibrary and project gutenberg and zlibrary; for articles i usually check library genesis (sometimes i look for books here too) or sci-hub (usually works best if you search by doi)

failing that -- if it's an article, i go hunt down the email address of whoever wrote it and email them to ask for access! for books, if you really really want to read it you can usually put in a request at your local library for them to get it, but sometimes i do just have to give up if i can't find a book for free online anywhere :(

omg hi !! thank u for reading my works i rly appreciate this ! <3 ​in general writing its a lot of figuring things out as u go and everyone’s always learning more, but here r some tips i have ^_^

- there’s a book called ‘put the cat in the oven before you describe the kitchen’ and that title within itself is good advice. if u want to do smt to keep readers invested, write an action that will make them curious and want to know more (sort of like a hook from english class)

- u don’t need to use adjectives for everything ! this is something i still need to practice as well, but usually it’s better if u only describe things unusual or important to the story, because if u do too much it can come off as confusing and overwhelming

- as ur writing/editing make sure to think abt it from a reader’s pov ! of course as the writers we know what’s going on and it’s easy to answer any questions that pop up, but sometimes those answers aren’t clear to the audience. when i proofread im usually overly skeptical to make sure everything makes sense, and it also helps to have peers proofread as well ! im always here if any1 needs someone to proofread a fic :)))

- and of course also think abt how u feel abt what ur writing. if u don’t like the story ur telling and feel compelled to write something else, don’t feel guilty abt not finishing immediately! telling the story u want to tell ensures that the end product is something u will be proud of, and if u gain inspiration for that old story again u can always go back to it!

- make sure to write in whatever style feels natural and right to u, and try not to force a certain writing style !! it gets easy to compare urself to others but the more u try to force ur works to be or sound a certain way, the easier it is to lose motivation for writing. of course u will learn a lot of new techniques and strategies the more u read and write more, but those come naturally !

- following that, reading is very helpful for developing ur writing. it can help u find out what works for u and what doesn’t, and what u enjoy writing. bc if u enjoy reading smt chances are ur going to enjoy writing it as well!

- and my biggest piece of advice is to just write when u feel inspo hit, let urself write what feels right and once u come up with something ur proud of (and u should always be proud of what u write bc writing is extremely hard ! remember, each work u post is an accomplishment) post it. even if u look back on it in a couple years and feel embarrassed, it was a learning experience and it made u the writer u are .

here's some books i've really been really enjoying personally!

house of leaves -> this book for all that it eats at my brain issss hard to describe. if you haven't heard of it the basic BASIC idea is that a dude robs a recently dead guy's apartment, finds a researched manuscript for a book about a film that doesn't exist and starts going insane from the horrors that seem to be transgressing over from the subject matter of the film. i personally find some sections ft johnny truant, resident said guy, to be a bit of a slog esp but overall i fucking love this book so far and having to pick your way through it is a lot of fun.

the haunting of hill house -> another horror book! god what to even say. it has imo one of the most effective openings to any novel and i love what the novel is going for so much i physically cannot watch the show because what it's tackling is antithetical to what the novel is exploring. god. such a good exploration about how our personal lenses through which we view the world can become all consuming. also. dont laugh but like. eleanor's hatelove relationship w the house is homoerotic fr. sealing urself inside the labyrinth kind of vibes.

bechdal's fun home autobiographical graphic novel -> actually read this one for a class a couple years ago and still think about it.

so fucking nerdy of me but yes the iliad, specifically caroline alexander's translation of it -> idk there is something about this story that genuinely captivates me and has me coming back to chip away at my reading of it no matter how much time has passed like maybe it's how old the story is, maybe it's the visceral toll of war upon humanity and wrestling with how to find meaning in a world where the gods provoke suffering as much as they offer assistance, the weight of a god's love being just as deadly as their anger, the glimpses into the love we bear for one another, "And though the dead forget the dead in the house of Hades, even there I shall still remember my beloved companion.” god i am incoherent about this story but i love it so much

i want to write a book at one point in my life or even do this for a living but i‘m a little scared honestly cause i haven’t ever written a whole book just poems or little „insights“ and ideas. so your advice would be quite beneficial and would mean the absolute world to me!!

ummmm so for me I started writing on here in like 2014/2015 w a couple of breaks here and there and then things got more consistent for me in early 2019 but in general.....before fic I did not like writing at all like it was always my least favorite thing to do in school and I just always considered myself more of a reader than a writer like the reason I started writing in the first place was because I just....I wanted to evoke that same feeling I got in my chest when reading my favorite fics but like....alter it so its EXACTLY what I liked and what I wanted and other ppl seem to like it too which is fun!!! thats kind of how I "started" but I like....I honestly don't think ive Developed as a writer until this last year. and trust me if u ever see my old stuff.....not saying im Perfect now but back then....I was even farther away from perfect than I am now HUSFHSUHFUS I think the things that have helped me become a better writer completely align w how much I read other things and how much I allow myself to indulge stupid ideas that I have GHSIFHSUHFS reading other ppls work and books and other just Concepts help like broaden your view of what you can also achieve in my opinion like ur not stealing ideas or anything like that but youre taking in a new vocabulary and new world someone crafted so you can see if you can push ur own limits and see how you can find something similar to that in ur own style! and like allowing urself to write those ideas that ur not sure you even Love or if you ever want anyone to read isn't a waste of time bc its like still expanding ur like thought process on writing and exploring different dynamics or character and it can grow into something yu love or it was just a good exercise to see where you feel like you fall in terms of writing and style and genre.

and like ofc just loving what you write and having faith in it is always the biggest thing like if you love it that energy will be reflected back to you when it hits the right light. writing is hard and going at ur own pace and taking those breaks and taking a moment to find your Style is so huge! good luck on all the things bestie I always feel like I get jumbley on these kinds of questions so I hope it helped!

Cuz I feel like some people (at least the ones I’ve seen write hate comments) just assume any fic dealing with the subject of rape is fetishizing it, which is not true in your case. I guess I’m wondering why write this story with these characters?

Just asking because maybe it’ll help figure out my own motivation for writing something similar. I mean I won’t lie, I do have the trauma I can project, but mostly my motive is just ‘hey if that happened to this guy, would that be sad or what’? And then I’m like ‘is that a bad or stupid or exploitative reason to write it’??

Hey! Aww yeah I totally understand where you're coming from here.

So, in terms of why I wanted to write a fanfic like Old Habits, I think I write what I want to read most of the time. I enjoy h/c darkfics that deal with trauma and fallout and then mend it piece by piece, and I decided to write the fanfic I wanted. On a psychological level, I think we're probably in agreement, there - I have trauma, I've been through some stuff, and I do find writing and reading about dark experiences cathartic and healing, but I consider it a secondary reason - I usually get interested in an idea first. In terms of the specific characters, I like Bruno and Mirabel's platonic relationship and wanted to have Bruno apply his own experiences with trauma to try to help Mirabel the best he could.

I'm obviously incredibly biased haha, but I don't think it's inherently exploitative to want to explore rape and rape recovery in fanfic. There was a post on glorification here recently that comes to mind - a lot of the time, the reasoning behind criticism around a concept being exploitative is because the subject is often or easily mishandled. If rape is used as a plot point or as a means to an end and that trauma isn't addressed and the character is suddenly totally fine, that's frustrating. If you're handling the subject with care, especially if the intent of your fanfic is largely focused on recovery, then I'd say you're probably on the right track. We all make mistakes too, but we can use those mistakes to learn and do better.

On comments assuming intent about fics like mine: Sexual assault is an incredibly sensitive topic that people have personal experiences with and don't want to see mishandled. Some people, like you've said, make assumptions, don't think you should be writing about it at all, or that you should only write about it in a specific way. You're probably going to get a few of these unsolicited comments. My best advice is to look for the bit of truth that is sometimes in these kinds of comments that you might be able to fashion into strengthening your plot, portrayal, or a piece that they were confused by, and discard the rest. Also consider comment moderation! Write the story you want to tell.
