okay. there’s a certain... mixing up of the terms “headcanon” and “analysis” on this fandom. to put it simply, you (a generic you) don’t headcanon mercutio as gay, you make a textual analysis of the character and reach that conclusion. just because atla has more of a casual fanbase than romeo & juliet that does not mean atla is not a complex piece of media capable of being analyzed. there is an at least generally correct way of reading a text in my opinion, and discussing the text, subtext, metatext (and sometimes the paratext) to draw conclusions about the characters and their relationships is not a “headcanon” it’s an analysis. a headcanon is something fun to think about, like whether or not zuko is a theatre enjoyer or if toph’s favorite season is spring, or if katara ever slept with a stuffed animal. an analysis is something backed up by the text that you stop and think about and take the time to develop an opinion on. you (a generic you) cannot compare a 100+ word analysis (which takes a lot of work and thought process btw) of sokka being bisexual (backed up by canon!) to someone just saying ty lee is trans because they like it that way (which is valid to think about, but it’s never explicitly shown on-screen or even implied) that’s just not how it should work when analyzing media, and it’s frankly unfair in my opinion; diminishing someone’s analysis by putting it at the same level or category as a headcanon is just demoralizing, and a misconception definitely of the well-known fandom mantras such as “ship and let ship” or “all headcanons are valid” when it comes to character sexualities. one reads the text, one analyses it, and draws the conclusion that, say, zuko is gay. so they genuinely believe zuko is gay and any other readings are incorrect, and that’s just them having an interpretation of the text, and definitely not an insult to your person specifically for headcanoning zuko as bisexual, nor invalidating your personal experience as a bisexual person just because they think bisexual zuko is incorrect; because as we all know, fandom isn’t activism! i am not ignoring fandom etiquette by making an analysis of a complex piece of media i enjoy or a nuanced character i relate to. if you base your fandom experience on headcanons alone then good for you, but some people enjoy the understanding of the text’s layers as they are. just because something is valid (projecting i suppose) that doesn’t immediately mean it’s plausible in all aspects.

idk ,, a hc theres not rlly that much content for, but . i always rlly loved the idea of both katara and sokka being trans??? i have,, a Few actual hcs for them so . pls bear with me

1. kataras transition was kind of difficult, especially at first, due to the lack of women in her life to actually talk to about transness and being a girl as a whole to,, like how the hell is she supposed to Learn How to Lady if the only ladies here to learn from are really really old??? like nothing against old people, just . come on . i think this whole Situation also contributed to katara realizing she was trans as a whole, leading her to figure it out pretty shortly before the series' start.

this also goes for sokka but tbh he just said 'i am now a MAN so i will b MYSOGYNISTIC' so we aint talkin abt him . its Just Not Interesting (but,, he figured out he was trans like . maybe a month before the start of the series . i mean look at his ass . come On. the fishing scene? hes insecure asf)

2. honestly? the whole scene with toph and the beauty parlor was,, probably a Big gender euphoria moment for katara. and know what? fuck it, toph too. ofc i kinda hc toph as like . No Gender Only Rock but . finally trying out makeup and a little bit of care was great for both of them.

thoughts on transman/transmasc Toph? 👉🏾👈🏾

(Okay so I know I took long to respond but I wanted this to be good so please forgive me (because if anyone is an example of having to perform a role your parents and society picked out for you but then breaking out and owning who you are, it is Toph. Honestly if you are trans and reading this I admire you and you are stronger than the whole fire nation army). 

Toph would have just have ended the iconic “you thought I was just a blind little girl” speech with “oh and newsflash I am not even a girl” before joining team avatar. Not willing to hide anymore he would come out to the gaang directly and: 

Sokka would take Toph on an obligatory shopping trip for new clothes directly (you know he would jump to the chance)

Sokka would just call Toph bro, Aang would say buddy, Katara would say: so I guess now i also have a little brother since a big one wasn`t enough 

Toph and Katara would still get their spa day in ba sing se only now they also go shopping again because Katara secretly judges Sokka`s style choices and wants Toph to have variety 

the bounty hunters are taking longer to find Toph because they would just be so confused (I thought we were supposed to find Lao Beifong’s daughter but all I see is a boy with a really evil grin)

“So this means the boulder never got beat by a girl!” “Yes but he can still be!” *Cut to Katara and Suki ready rumble*

Katara just knowing she had lost as soon as the stage!Toph came on in the ember island play (Toph: I told you, it is accurate Katara, arms crossed: they did make you taller though Toph: yeah cause I deserve it)

Toph on bending metal: Yeah you know once you have broken through one construct, you kinda can break them all you know?

One day when Toph felt insecure about his identity Sokka insisted on both them putting on water tribe warrior make up because that alsways works wonders on his confidence (he also took Toph ice doging after the war you can`t change my mind). Aang obviously had to join as well and since they were on a roll they decided to just take out some fire nation battleships 

Not that Toph could not speak for himself but of course the whole gaang is always ready to fight everyone who is even slightly disrespectful (Random fisherman: But how do you know you are not a girl? Katara: How do you know you are not a fish? Katara: *Uses her bending water to straight up slam him into the ocean*)

When Toph came out to Zuko (who from day one had just been like “shit another powerful 12 year old boy who I am up against but this one isn`t even a pacifist”) he told him directly that he was the strongest guy he had ever met. (And of course Toph knew he was telling the truth)

Also, this would be canon:

Sokka: trans people can do everything!

Toph: trans people can pull scams!

Katara: Just because trans people can do everything does not mean they should do everything!

okay so i just need to put a disclaimer about my hcs: i usually have multiple where i don’t really view any of them as 100 percent canon? almost like aus? i have hcs that contradict each other, basically.

i’ll get this out of the way: zuko is trans. okay now for the good stuff. 

i steal hcs and i passed by these few posts of trans katara and i couldn’t stop thinking about it for days. katara, a trans girl. imagine. IMAGINE. anyways sometimes i see katara as cis sometimes i see her as normal it depends on who i’m talking to. most people view her as cis which is so sad… 

saw a fic where aang was nb and a bitch may have cried a little bit. it was good but i don’t know where it is anymore ):  

toph is a nb lesbian. all aus every universe. i say this because i’d be doing my nb lesbian friend who reads her as a nb lesbian dirty by making her cis or straight in any universe. ever since my friend said it to me i never went back. 

i have 2 views on sokka. either a cis guy trying his best, or a trans guy with sexist views bc he’s trying to fit himself in a box of being a man. like sokka saying to aang, “dont let her call you twinkletoes, its not manly!” i can read it as a cis guy bein stupid or a trans guy thinking he has to do manly things to be seen as a man. obviously sokka gets a shit ton of character development with those views but yeah. (btw sexism is still sexism, even if it comes from a trans guy. want to put a disclaimer here abt that) 

i mostly just saw suki as a cis girl but if ppl have different hcs then (eyes emoji) hmu.
