Some critiques over ted lasso s3 ep9 from a queer perspective. (sorry for the long post, got a lot on my mind).

Overall I think today's ep was perfectly fine, but there were some things that kinda bugged me about Colin and Isaacs's story line. I think their last scene together was cute, but I don't love the part where Isaac said Colin lied to him and Colin said basically 'It's not you, it's me".

Like it was specifically Isaac who was shown to make slightly homophobic-esque comments earlier in the season, like when he said "That's kinda gay bruv" to another player's comment about Zava. And I feel like Colin could've pointed out that those kinds of comments, even if they're not intentionally anti-gay, can make someone hesitant to come out to that person.

I wish the show would've more explicitly shown subtle toxic masculinity and casual homophobia in Richmond. Like I love our soccer himbos, but I think it's a bit deceptive to view them as entirely wholesome, and just ignore their small toxic elements.

Homophobia (both in and out of sports) isn't just an asshole fan shouting the f-slur, it's also the small things said by even the most well-intentioned people. Bigotry is much more systematic and cultural than one loud bigot.

Like obviously Isaac is shown to be an ally, but I feel like (as a queer person) the episode focused a little too much on straight peoples' feelings and not the actual queer characters.

Again, it's not a black-and-white issue. I think some of Isaac's emotions were valid to explore, but I feel like the narrative was a little too forgiving to how he reacted.

It might just also be me, since i personally (again, as a queer person) hate the trope of "you didn't come out to me, and now I'm angry at you because you should've told me cus we're friends". I find it kinda insulting when straight people (fictional or irl), make a queer persons' coming out about their own insecurities/emotions. Queer people don't inherently owe straight people anything when it comes to them being open about their sexuality. It's their identity.

Really I don't think there was anything extremely harmful in the shows' approach to this queer story. But as a queer fan, I do feel a bit let down by how they handled it. Just like a lot of storylines in this season, it just feels a bit underbaked and sloppy.

Again, did not hate the episode in any way! I just think some of the elements missed the mark for me, that's all.

so, last time i left off on homestuck, i was introduced with the cherubs, and meenah peixes' bizarre (afterlife) adventure. as always, some thoughts :

-i kinda feel bad for dirk lol. out of all the group, he was the one caliborn felt is the most tolerable to talk to. and worst of all, he kinda let him play his shitty games. eugh, if that was me, i'd just scoff at caliborn's threats on killing his sister and accidentally kickstarted the apocalypse too early since my ignorance pissed him off. to be fair, the porn drawing game feels like a pretty lackcluster attempt at trolling. its so cute how dirk draw himself kissing his crush.

-poor calliope though. last time i saw her she's very much a ghost, maybe stuck around the furthest ring along with the other very dead ghosts, but is somehow able to subtly influence things like guide caliborn into doing his quest from the viewport, and allegedly maybe stop meenah and vriska from having their duel and waking up john. this is only a maybe though, im not very convinced at my perception of events here.

-speaking of calliope and caliborn, this is where things started getting meta right? homestuck has always have a bit of metafiction elements to it, and a lot of its themes seems to be deconstructing and examining popular culture. act 6 is where things started getting off the rails, i mean, where references to internet subcultures gets more blatant, more up to date with the current time it was made (direct meme references instead of making its own inner jokes derived from irl shit like sbahj), and started to put a mirror on homestuck since it has grown into a notorious major fandom now. it makes sense that hussie would start writing about homestuck instead writing about the internet in general. there is no way act 6 can be something else. and it has its negatives just as much as it has its positives

-first of all, meme references in media has always been hard to do right. remember that burger ad fiasco? some of the jokes on act 6 doesnt land as well as in act 5 and 4

-wait shit i went off the rails. i want to talk about caliope and caliborn first. caliope is a hypothetical fan of hs meanwhile caliborn is a hater right? he was also a representation of misogyny which fits with the times. a lot of cringe culture ppl in the 2010s, at least the loudest ones, tend to be misogynists. i've seen the case over and over again. people who said they hate the fandom when actually they just hate to see teen girls having fun. they also tend to be ableists esp their attitude around bullying and autistic ppl but hussie is also an ableist too, so even though he was the one being bullied by cringe culture people online and benefitted from autistic kids making fanworks, he made caliborn to be the guy with a learning disability. hilarious bitch ig.

-but other than that, caliope's insult to caliborn implies that the murder he did was detrimental to his growth as person. not just metaphorically, but literally. im not so up to date with cherub lore and alien biology, but killing your headmate before their natural death and integration Sounds Bad. and based on calliope's word alone, it might even make caliborn perpetually stunted in cherub equivalent of puberty forever, unable to reach maturity. poor dude. but, is actually a pretty good commentary on toxic masculinity preventing one's full growth as a person because he can't allow himself to gain emotional maturity and do so called female activities.

-okay, moving on from the cherubs. the dancestors. personally, i like their designs, i spesifically love meenah, porrim, and aranea. meenah is scratching the vriska itch but with a different flavor. and i guess kankri, despite his massive annoying factor was nice too. i know a kid who actually act like him. the kid in my town went drunk with his friends and when his friends started being sad about his ex, the kid called him a sexist pig. a few weeks later i got news that this same kid persistently try get girls into having sex with him. educating him was a bitch and a half yknow and im not even that sad the kid decides to withdraw from organizing for now. but it is a bit hopeful to see that a kid like kankri, in another timeline, if given the chance to grow up and learn would be a terrific leader. maybe a few years later the kid in my town would change too?

-but other than that its... man how do i say this. okay, its bad. a lot of the characters are just there just for the sake of having to be there. hussie, you dont have to complete all 12 of the dancestors its okay. youre just wasting more energy animating stuff that you obviously dislike by now. like idc what they says, but the 12 dancestors wasnt even a good mirror of tumblr subcultures. its just there as a one off gag instead of something they wants to delve into later on. the jokes wasnt even that funny like, i've spent two years on reddit making fun of softboy nice guys and gamer gurls the joke is old at this point. and hussie seems to delve deeper into being an ableist asshole the more people criticize them. its pathetic to make a strawman character of your haters and criticizers. honestly, caliborn would have been a better character if its just a stand in for toxic masculinity instead of a homestuck hater. the story is too bloated at this point. just give it a rest.

-also, act 6 weakness is that most of the story elements would fly over someone who never know the heydays of 2012-2015 tumblr. okay, this applies to homestuck as a whole honestly. like its about the internet and american 90s nostalgia. only a terminally online person would fully appreciate it. but dear god the mental illnes you'll get if youre one of lucky demographics to understand... hussie might have hit and miss on some things, but when they're right theyre right. i do think there are merits on making things that will never have mass appeal.

-okay, now thats out of my system im gonna say that from now on, im not gonna take homestuck as seriously as i did yesterday. i can see this is the point where things started to fall apart. bloated character sets, too many authorial self inserts, plot is becoming overly convoluted, the social commentary are becoming incoherent. hussie can make an entire page about dirk explaining the downfall of western civilization using historical materialism to jake but this will always be the webcomic where the 'scariest' troll is a rapper who made vodka pie, slept in a bed of honks, and taped wings on his godtier cosplay.

🎈 How does your muse relate to gender dynamics in their world? Is it different from IRL? (Felix ofc)

Well, this question falls under optional lore since pokemon is a huge fandom; there are followers I have who write escapism and followers who write dark topics.

But there is lore. Basically, world-building wise, bigotry and gender dynamics stem from the 'Alpha Wolves' cult/ideology, spreading historically from Galar the way it would have IRL, minus the guns; instead they weaponized dogs.

Pokemon seems like a place that is ahead of reality in progressiveness, but only by a little- a consequence of probably many things, such as easier travel, the weapons being living creatures, and a culture of love- ask many IRL an adult and many deem life just being unfair, independent- I don't see that streak in this world; aka i don't see bullies getting far/too violent without a team to back them up.

Anyways, Felix is in conflict about gender dynamics as a trans gay man born in the 90s. There's thought patterns, internalized toxicity, that bubbles up and causes him to take caution- I'm leery of strangers IRL that are 'too' nice to me because they might be about to misgender me. I don't wear makeup IRL because i don't pass as male 'enough' and am not comfortable yet. Because he's very small and 'cute' and such, he's not confident that other men will have genuine sexual interest for him- masc4masc gay culture at work, the want to appear more 'adult' and/or earn love. passing as a 'little boy' is both a trans and dwarfism thing;; and just trying to be gender euphoric without being misogynist/transphobic himself.

and, for the sake of my comfort and world building, his transition was fairly quick- i don't really wish to RP 'in-between' states, such as the wait for top surgery, bottom growth, voice dropping, etc.- I've had to drop contact with somebody over clearly preferring him pre-transition, and while i do still relate hard to the nonbinary agenda™️ mid-transition, I'm working on it. I'm not rlly comfortable with they/them due to terfs but i try to be kind/understanding. like, i still have boobs irl and i hate it. i don't trust nsfw themed blogs because the possibility for chaser behaviour ooc is high. consider a lot of that kind of stuff happening offscreen/off the radar. He just sort of reappeared in Alola under a new name and gender- only real exceptions being ORAS and Magikarp Jump with they/them pronouns. But, he's been blessed with very dramatic changes, when some trans guys get Nothing for any one change.

Ideally, he's so comfortable in his masculinity that he likes to be fruity sometimes- but he's still for the time being a bit shy about it, especially compared to my other, more traditionally masculine muses. He's a baby gay growing into his masculinity(/femme queerness), but is recognized as male by society. He's not used to the top energy side of himself; he grew up wanted as a 'bottom'.

IRL wise....i get hit by dysphoria here and there, especially with faceclaims. there's a fine balance between my personal style, looking as young as i do IRL, looking old 'enough'.....and y'know the work involved in finding or drawing shit and fkdgjkd. As well as enough expressions to work with- that's top priority.

facial hair's working wonders for my gender presentation, but I'm waiting for more. I'm waiting for surgery. I'm waiting to be 'There' tbh. my mixed passing is leaning into male.

I usually don't respond to negative asks but this one really irked me.

People always complain about people shipping someone with their same sex friend, but if a guy and a girl get on, even if they have no chemistry, everyone just assumes they love each other. This applies to Byler a lot as well. Byler shippers are constantly getting told that they're reinforcing toxic masculinity by saying affectionate guys might like each other because then some guys irl might be scared to be affectionate with their friends.

But why are we treating straight people's fear to be seen as gay as a valid and normal thing? And if this is such a big issue, why do gay people have to bring up the "if it was a guy and a girl" arguement over and over again to get people to listen to them?

No one's same sex friendships are falling apart because some people on the internet think two guys or two girls dating in a fictional show might be cute. But any time I interact with a guy platonically (because I'm a lesbian), everyone says I have a crush on him and no one finds that weird in the slightest. When you feel like discussing the topic of yanderes; I would like to present that the yandere archetype aside from being ableist is sexist, as it feeds into the outdated concept that controlling behaviour is "attractive" in men, and "cute", or "silly" in women which endangers both groups as further creates a stigma against domestic abuse survivors. I'd also say that it can contribute to toxic masculinity as I have seen content where senpai is framed as "weak," or in the case of female survivors "hysterical"; Both of those mindsets are really outdated, and make it hard for IRL domestic abuse survivors to find help, and treatment. Tbh Id say try to spend more time around queer men. A lot of trans men + gnc cis mlm (including myself) have struggled with toxic masculinity and have our own experiences with gender nonconformity and feeling like “not enough” of a man, so talking to your community can help! If you’re not safe to do so irl, try talking to them on the internet, discord servers for transmascs and mlm blogs, etc!

**SPOILERS FOR THE NEW EVENT SO PROCEED WITH CAUTION**

So my thoughts on the Like a Dame event (Yep, I'm back just for this cus I want to talk about it)

I've seen people complain about it because we only saw the brothers (and by extension side characters) crossdressing in the cards and not outfits like the events typically have.

Now some people think this it's because they'll get some shit for it in other countries, which they probably will because people have no chill when it comes to rejecting gender norms in some places. Assholes are everywhere, so I think I can say that with confidence that there will be at least one person somewhere that'll complain about it. I have uncles like this, so I get it.

That being said, Obey Me has done things like this before that were LGBTQ+ supportive before. They had Asmo flirt with a male survant of Diavolo, had our main character be of They/Them pronouns, and had tbe brothers love is regulardless of our gender. So having people against all that not want the event probably isn't the issue

Here's what I think happened. So there is kind of a pattern between events. Every like 3-4 events is when the brothers dress up (not counting when they reuse the same outfits for stuff, but correct me if I'm wrong none the less.). Basically after a SET number of days, that's when their sprites have new outfits and I think making them probably takes about the time the other events before it last. See the devs have to make sprites of this and a story around it and then program all of them to get it going in time.

Maybe they DID want to have sprites of it and the event we'll get after that wasn't done on time. I think it was a pretty cheap tactic to use the same excuse as they did in the beach event, but maybe it was all they had. I'm not judging. We do need an explination as to why the boys look normal.

Now, the event itself was okay. Not one of my favourites, the start had me a bit iffy after using the beach tactic. I did enjoy it way more in the second part. I like the idea of Lucifer having to teach his brothers proper edicate for once during these parties. I liked imagine Mammon teaching Beel to walk in heels, I thought that was really cute. I ESPECIALLY love how the brothers, even before they were all picked, didn't have a problem with being the Dame. There were no onjections, no forms of toxic masculinity to be seen. Their only gripe was how to ACT like the Dame because stuff like holding silverware properly and the POSTURE for walking in heels was a lot of hard work. To me it was like "Yeah! I'll crossdress so long as I can be myself!"

I DIED when Mammon chose to protect us over the Queen. This straight us confirmed within me that he is my comfort character. Also, the brothers must of looked like tbe baddest bitches that ever walked the Devildom, chasing down the culprit in heels and STILL keeping their cool when they caught her. In my head, it was just "Yeah! We're bustin your ass AND we look good doing so!"

Also, I know we didn't get to see Queen Rose. It's probably just as we because she might ONLY exist for this event.

Hi! I’m a new Glee watcher and my favorite ship is Klaine. Something I’ve noticed is that they’re never allowed PDA or cute background moments like other couples. So I would say that it was a gay x straight couple double standard, but, Brittany and Santana are literally always cuddling in the background whether it’s a hand hold, head on the shoulder, one looking lovingly at the other etc and it just doesn’t make sense to me. Why is Brittana allowed all that and not Klaine? They’re allowed to be all cute in the background while Klaine sits 5 feet away from each other.. Why???

So, I think there are two, some what really different, things going on here.  

1. There is a bit of a double standard going on here.  I think f/f relationships are allowed to be more physical because they’re less threatening to that dastardly concept that is toxic masculinity.  Guys can’t be too touchy feely because that would be, you know, too gay.  But girls are hot - so that’s fine. :P 

I would say that this was network interference, but they made it clear in Props (with the Finn and Puck parody of Klaine) that it was more a choice by production, and less about what the network was or wasn’t telling them to do.   

There is some story development that backs it up though -- in that Kurt isn’t a touchy feely person.  Even if we did get to see it more, I don’t think Kurt and Blaine would be as affectionate as Brittana - especially in public. 

I also think there’s some interesting commentary here about Klaine, the m/m relationship, got to have more emotional moments - and a deeper emotional story, while the f/f couple had more physicality to express their relationship.  Both of which turns gender norms on their head, and is an interesting conversation.  

That said, double standard is just a smaller part but not the crux of what I think is actually going on... 

2. Here is what I feel is the honest truth... it’s not a secret that Naya and Heather were bff.  And not like close work friends, but actual in their lives, sisters-like, bffs.  They have (had) a deep connection as very close friends, and I think a lot of that was what built Brittana.  I think a lot of the physicality we see is directly from Naya and Heather liking to be close, and not afraid to show their closeness in a physical way.  

Meanwhile... Chris and Darren, who were probably pretty good friends during the shooting, and are at least friendly with each other now, were not then and not now as close as Naya and Heather.  Chris, and I say this as an assumption based on all the things I know about him - and everything that I’ve seen of him IRL, is not a touchy feely person -- especially in a public way.  

Darren is -- and you can see smaller moments everywhere of Blaine reaching out to touch Kurt, because Darren’s the type of guy who would probably do the same thing in real life.  But honest to god, Chris isn’t - and that bleed through wasn’t going to be the same.  

I do think Darren and Chris had chemistry, but they’re both very good at their jobs, and that chemistry was reserved for when the camera was on them.  I don’t think as much effort was put into the background, and they didn’t share the closeness the way Heather and Naya did to have it radiate anyway.  

But that’s my two cents on it...
