#transgender Kakashi headcanon

I've got a headcanon for a trans Kakashi.
Mainly just imagining his and Gai's friendship and how it would affect it. Like Kakashi being sure he's a male from such a young age and Gai just being so supportive of him. He doesn't even really question it because Kakashi said he's a boy so he must be. Kakashi constantly trying to prove to himself he's just as masculine as all the other boys around him Vs Gai slowly teaching him that he doesn't have to be hypermasculine to be a dude.
As they get older and Kakashi starts trying to find ways to bind, Gai is always making sure he stays safe and not overworking himself. Maybe he's binding unsafely one day and Gai decides to help him out of it and look into better ways so they can keep their battles fair. They end up coming up with a better method together and he gets to see just how much it means to Kakashi even if the mask stays on.
No one really says anything about Kakashi being different growing up, more so because he could take them in a fight but also because it would be even more unfair if Gai knew about someone having an issue with his rival.
By the time Kakashi starts hrt I imagine he'd tell Gai all about it, explaining every step of the process. Not realising that Gai probably would already know, wanting to understand his rivals experiences but he's just as supportive as ever and happily listens to it all.
Getting to teach students is where it starts to really improve. Gai being Kakashi's biggest supporter as they do a talk on how to be inclusive for the occasional trans student they get. Even though by this point Kakashi appears male and no one would think twice about using he/him, it's with Gai's support that he's comfortable in taking this step to make it easier for the kids going through his experiences since not everyone has a Gai in their life.

Do you have OCs that you write?
You bet I do! If you're interested in writing with me in this regard, please let me know. You can DM me for this. 😊 As most people won't be looking for this, I won't list them here.
Are there "taboo" topics for you?
Mostly the obvious - I will not write inappropriate content that involves minors in any way. I don't typically write gore either, but this is not "taboo" per se. I'm pretty open about sensitive topics so... As in my header, anything that might be sensitive or a trigger will be tagged as such. Please block my UHCGtw and/or UHCGexplicit tag if you do not wish to see this content.
You haven't answered my ask! What's up with that?
I'm a human (unfortunately). Sometimes a prompt will be difficult for me to brainstorm or I will be uncomfortable answering it. Sometimes I'm just lazy or living life. If you do not receive a reply, please do not DM me, but feel free to resend the ask in case it was missed.
Can I request specific genders/identities for my asks?
Absolutely you can!
Please note however that there may be inaccuracies or variances as I, myself, am a cisgender, bisexual female with male preferences. I'm happy to write something outside of this (i.e. homosexual, transgender specific, male!MC etc.) but I lack these experiences in my personal life—so please be kind. I will do my best! 😊

hi what do you think abt t4t kakayama (it's canon to me tbh)
:) hi ty for the question. i will do two sweet pictures of them being intimate and then under the cut there's going to be a longer very unsweet and more technical response
Tumblr media Tumblr media
so i'm usually not a very shippy person! but that said i am also on the record as an occasional kakayama + kakayamagai enjoyer
i do hc them both as trans and in different ways w/ different experiences of transition and identity! i have no interest in proving my view as canon, but i do regard my reading of the text (text here including the anime) as a valid interpretation of yamato's experience of identity
yamato, for example, imo, doesnt have any real lived experience of being raised as a child of any gender. he was an experimental subject, and then he was Danzō's weapon/vessel for the mokuton, and then he was in anbu.
in a fun little word game which should not be taken seriously: it'd almost be more fitting to describe him as "adgender" rather than "transgender" since the prefix "trans" implies moving across where the prefix "cis" means to stand still, but the prefix "ad" means "to move towards" and i headcanon him as somebody who was degendered as a child, not in a cool nonbinary way, but instead in a dehumanizing, objectifying way, so his experience of creating his identity and his gender along with it is one of moving toward the concept of gender this word doesn't and wont exist, but bc of the way english works it would probably be simplified to be spelled precisely the same as "agender" in the same way that "aggression" came from latin "aggredi" which came from "ad" (meaning to/toward) and and latin "gradus" (meaning step) (essentially the combination means "to step to" [in a threatening manner]) the only diferences is where agender (meaning no gender) is pronounced ay-gender, the agender that comes from adgender would be prounounced more like "uhgender" in the same way that agressive isnt pronounced like "ay-gressive" but instead like "uhgressive"
and then...as for kakashi? i just decided on vibes. i didn't think hard about it.
i guess i should also say that, while i draw kakayama very infrequently, when i do draw it i usually try to be very apparent about the transness in the artwork if i can? especially if i'm drawing anything more intimate than a peck on the cheek. it's no secret that shipping is often times the most energized part of fandom, and i kind of don't want to produce romantic or sexual artwork which will be enjoyed by people who don't think trans people can be attractive? or who find that trans headcanons make a character uninteresting to them? or worse, "ruin" a depiction of a character to them?
often i think about in terms of. IF there are people that follow me that love my work (usually) and think that kakashi or yamato are hot (usually) and love kakayama (usually) but get frustrated or even uncomfortable out when i draw them as explicitly trans? then i'm drawing all intimate artwork of them as explicitly trans.
it's a little like...nobody gets to love my work if transgender characters are a turnoff for them. that's the bar for entry, is the way i think of it, but really its more like putting onions in a dish. if you want to eat the dish you have to eat the onions. if you don't want to eat the onions, don't eat the dish. all the meals i make contain onions. i'll never compromise on my intention to put onions in every dish i make. that's my ninja way, as the kids say.
especially in the climate we're in right now.
i don't know. i have a lot of feelings about how most fandoms tend to view trans men, especially in terms of romantic and sexual relationships. I'm doing a bad job of expressing the depth of how much seeing how fandom treats trans male identity and transmasculine bodies impacts the way that i draw + write kakayama, but genuinely it's something i think about every single time i create content about them.

how many submissions have you gotten that are just "they're transmasc because im trans and i said so" or some variation? nothing against those submissions, thats basically how i feel about every transmasc headcanon i have lmao
Too many. I have these headcanons too, but it's precisely why I'm weighing canon trans guys with a higher chance of getting in to the actual polls. Doofenschmirtz and James absolutely demolished last year's tournament and I want to give other guys some spotlight
The funniest ones I can remember would have to be CSM's Denji and Kakashi Hatake. Denji because it would change a lot about his character if he was transgender (he's so loud and brash and would ABSOLUTELY have as hard a time of hiding it as he does for not talking about his powers) but could theoretically still work. Kakashi because it would absolutely make so much sense given his whole journey of struggling to make peace with the fundamental person that he is and always hiding behind some kind of mask (or to be more accurate, feeling more comfortable behind it)
Also because if Kakashi gets in then I am required to also put in Satoru Gojo from JJK like are you kidding me it would be illegal to run one without the other. I have a lot of personal fondness for the Trans Gojo headcanon (he's the love of my life he's my kitty cat he's the world's biggest asshole and he looks good in lip gloss and a skirt and his Nendroid figure gave him Chanel boots)

Naruto Character Headcanons that no one will Agree With
Sakura smokes cigarettes. At first to calm her nerves as a teenager, and later on just to relax a little. Smokes much stronger stuff than Shikamaru, but they still share when they're with each other.
Kakashi stress eats. Not often, but he does.
Gai only has actual chill when he and Kakashi are alone. Over the years, he has gained some of Kakashi's sarcasm and meanness
Lee gets overstimulated by Gai and Tenten, which results in anger, but he keeps it bottled up... which causes more anger
Neji, after facing many years of abuse from Hiashi and other main branch members, found his comfort in Sakura, who faced similar treatment from her parents
Naruto, Lee and Neji all have a sibling bond with Sakura. Refering to Sakura as "Nii-san" or "older brother"
The Hyuuga clan, stuck in an older time and very front about their old traditions, are majorly homophobic and transphobic.
Neji is the only one to truly break out of that, thanks to Konoha 11.
Gai is Aroace
On the inside, Hashirama is a very dark and sinister man. Tobirama is his only concern, and swore to protect him at all costs. And until Madara comes into his life, Tobirama is the only thing that keeps him going
Tobirama is Aroace too, but is pressured to marrying by Butsuma
Temari is intersex. Male on the lower half, female up top
Hidan likes to scribble random things in notebooks when he's stressed and needs to calm down, and listens to music very loudly
He hugs a body pillow when he sleeps and can't sleep well without it
Itachi is Asexual
Sakura is mtf trans
Ino is lowkey disgusted by Temari and Shikamaru's relationship not being "normal". Same thing with Sakura and Sasuke
Hidan's oddly supportive of Deidara, despite being an asshole to him all the time

I love me some angst. so im going to bring
Most transgender FTM people struggle with having a child, especially mid transition. And as well as people taking T-shots. As they have more testosterone than Estrogen most of the time.
I feel as if Kakashi would be in the same situation when him and Gai decide to try and have a child. It's not that Gai's sperm is weak or infertile. Its just Kakashi.
The more Testosterone a female has, the less likely they are to bear a child. causing a sort of infertility reaction.
It's a mistake a lot of people make. They decide to have a child mid gender transition or semi late, instead of early on. Though it is an honest mistake that isn't bad. It just lowers your chance of having a kid.
By the end of it, possibly months of trying, Kakashi is pregnant and is bearing a child. As it usually takes 2 weeks on average to know if your pregnant or not. So lets say it takes 7 attempts for it to finally work.
I appreciate the lesson for others, but as someone who has PCOS (more testosterone in my body then I ‘should’ have) I know perfectly well the struggles and the pain’s. I was 30 when I had my child and I tend to imagin Kakashi was the same since I think him and Gai just haven’t actively been trying but they have not been using contraception if any kind either
A large reason Kakashi only wants One kid in my mind is because of the dislike of the experience of carrying a child, and the difficulty of getting to that point. It took him and Gai years to actually have a child and they charish their child with all of their hearts.
It’s a gift they weren’t sure they were really ever going to get, but one they appreciate with all of their hearts.
Kakashi doesn’t go on T-shots until after they have their child, that is something I have talked about because I know the risks to fertility as both someone with PCOS and a husband who’s a doctor and who will talk to me about these things. It’s once they have had their child and Kakashi has had time to kind of recover that he goes on T-shots (I also don’t belive they were available till Tsunade came to Konoha and things started to change for the better, but that’s just my personal headcanon)
For the angst, I’m sure the two of them would struggle when it doesn’t happen immidiatly. When they have to wait months, maybe even a few years, before that kid they finally agreed to have comes along.
It’s stressful for Kakashi because he knows it’s his body. That there’s something in him that’s making it difficult. He hates it
But as always, Gai is supportive. All that matters is they try, and when things start to look bleak they’re both prepared to give up. Just as they do, though, the thing they’ve been hoping for finally happens
That positive test
They’re going to be dads, and they’ve never been so excited and scared at the same time

Also since I'm on the topic heres my akatsuki gender/sexuality headcanons. Under a readmore bc it's long as hell.
• Nagato/Pein - nonbinary gay (they/it/he)
Idk I've just always seen them as nonbinary. I think they've known since they were a kid. Also I wouldn't be surprised at one point he had a crush on Yahiko. But at this point he's too caught up in everything to even consider getting a partner. I like to think it was the first one to come out in the ame trio.
• Yahiko - cis bi (he/him)
Cool guys like him are always bisexual like cmon. Was always very supportive of Nagato and Konan being trans.
• Konan - nonbinary/demigirl lesbian (she/her)
I go back and forth on whether she's nb or demigirl but she's def a lesbian. I think it took her a while to figure it out but was relieved when Nagato and Yahiko supported her. Same as Nagato, she's too caught up in everything, although I'm sure she sometimes sits and wishes she had a gf.
• Zetsu - bigender (they/it)
White Zetsu is nonbinary (a little feminine leaning but not transfem) and Black Zetsu is agender. I don't want to think about them fucking.
• Kakuzu - agender gay (he/him)
He's too old to give a shit at this point. He's too cunty for a partner and no one seems worth his time to him.
• Hidan - cis?? bi (he/him)
Idk he's also known he was gay for a while but he was the kind of gay kid that was like "yeah I'm gay what about it?". I say he's cis??? bc when he was younger/first joined I feel like when asked for his pronouns he would've been like "the boy ones" but now that he's been around different ppl with different genders, when asked abt his gender he's probably like "whatever". Since he's from a smaller village I'm sure there's little education abt lgbt things and people so he's learned more being in the akatsuki.
• Sasori - nonbinary gay (he/they/it/doesn't rly care)
Look at him and tell me he isn't transgender. He literally took his body and turned into a puppet. Again, I feel like he's also known he was gay/trans since he was pretty young, but he kept it to himself instead. Knowing Chiyo, she probably isn't as accepting and Sasori knew, so he just. Didn't formally come out. Once he left Suna he went all out ofc.
• Deidara - trans gay guy (he/they)
For Deidara I think it took him a while to figure out he was gay/trans. I like to think that while he was figuring it out, he identified as bi, and when he realized he just wasn't into girls like that, he fully embraced being gay. At the same time he was also figuring out his gender. I think when he got recruited into the akatsuki, he had been on T for a little while and had either gotten top surgery right before he joined or right after. He was just a baby gay/trans when he was recruited. I don't think he formally came out to his village. When he left he was still figuring shit out. I think him being attracted to Itachi confirmed he was into men.
• Itachi - transmasc nb gay (he/they)
Itachi also took a while to figure out his gender/sexuality. He never felt like a girl but didn't know being trans was even an option until he joined the anbu and was around Kakashi and Tenzo (who I also both hc as trans). He was like "no way" and talked to Shisui about it, and was the 1st one who he came out to. He was accepting and supportive of course. He then like. Explained and "came out" to Sasuke, who was rly young and didn't quite understand fully, but was happy to have a big brother. And then for a while he thought about coming out to his parents, he was hesitant but did it anyways. Mikoto was taken aback but accepted it, but Fugaku was less accepting. Not full on "get out of my house" disowning transphobe, but he just was even more distant. He probably told Itachi to not tell anyone else outside their immediate family. So there came even more repression for Itachi.
After the massacre he decided to finally go on T. He kind of held off on getting top surgery, since he was getting more sick he didn't know what would happen. But he has a naturally smaller chest anyway so he didn't rly mind.
The gay thing I think was much more recent/took him longer to figure out. I genuinely think he realized he liked men when he met Deidara. Idk he just seems like the kind of guy to not think about partners bc he was preoccupied with a bunch of shit. He was probably like "oh I'm gay" and thats it.
• Kisame - trans bi (he/him)
I go back and forth on whether he's trans or cis but I rlyyy like the idea of him being trans. The thought of Itachi having an older trans person to look up to is rly cute. He's had bottom surgery. Idk that much about kiri but I'm sure they like. Don't care if you're lgbt. As long as you can prove yourself as a fighter you're good.
• Obito - cis bi (he/him)
He's bisexual bc he's obsessed with Rin and Kakashi.

I think Kai is an absolute cutie. I just was curious. Is Kakashi transgender im the AU where Kai is his and Gai's chils? Also: Is Kai biologically both of theirs? Cause that resemblance is uncanny. Holy cow. Additionally: What is Kai's relationship with Himawari like?
Thank you! ok here we go
That’s what I like to believe, yes.  It’s just a headcanon I reaaallly like
That’s very likely though no one knows for sure fjsduifjfjdsf  its fun to leave people guessing
Himawari? I haven’t really seen Boruto to know how Himawari is to begin with {:- ( sorry!  maybe she’s like a niece?

Hey Silver Queen what is the DOS world's stance on homosexuality, trans and asexuality?
Phew, tricky one.
Okay, so the Naruto-verse is very ‘traditional Japanese’ so there’s a lot of that going on. It’s easiest to see in the anime/manga with the gender roles - All Women Are Housewives - because we don’t really get to see any alternatives in relationships.
Secondly, the clans especially are pretty being on ‘inherited bloodlines’ because of their abilities. Which require offspring to have them passed onto. This ties in to point 1 above, where-in it’s very expected to have kids. (The Ino-Shika-Chou oath basically says ‘from my parents and pass onto my kids’.)
(In this sense, homosexual relationships might not even ‘count’. Which is an erasure and not great, but might end up sort-of-encouraged between comrades for that reason? Idk.)
Which both add up very unfortunately in terms of the above people.
However, I feel like the Naruto-verse also has a very ‘old’ mentality about issues where it’s not how you feel that matters as much as what you do. I think this comes through in their treatment of mental illness - it’s not really a problem until the person snaps and hurts someone. (Which isn’t necessarily a positive, but at least you aren’t being told you’re a sinner for feeling something.)
And, fourthly, there is a known thing where the stronger a ninja gets, the more eccentric they are? That applies. Only switch ‘eccentric’ from meaning ‘wears green spandex constantly’ to ‘deviates from social expectations’. The amount of people who have the ‘power’ to censor you for things drops dramatically and you get to do, as Kakashi demonstrates for us, basically whatever-the-fuck you want.
Uh, so. In summary. It’s probably not very friendly, because conservative tradition. It’s probably becoming more known/accepted the longer the village goes on, though. Ninja have way more leeway than civilians in terms of personal presentation and relationships and that increases the stronger they get. There probably isn’t a lot of research into anything social sciences, so people might not understand even when things like trans/asexuality are happening.
Uh, so there’s my attempt at meta explanations (and without referencing any individual headcanons at that). @jacksgreysays you wanna chime in with anything?
-Silver Queen
(Yeah, I mean my ideal would be that it’s not an issue at all, but given the proof… I do think the main take away is that there’s a sort of balance–the stronger you are the more you’re allowed to get away with publicly. The weaker you are the more you are forced to conform to society.
I do think the most leeway we can get canonically is that of a function/appearances thing–so long as a man is married and already has heirs no one is really going to care if he has a mistress on the side. If said “mistress” is in fact also a man, well, maybe there’s more disapproval there but not prohibitively so. Certainly not if, as stated, that man is one of the elite eccentric jounin.
I actually kind of wonder if there is less social pressure on non-clans. Like, because bloodlines don’t matter among the non-clans then it’s more accepted for there to be “situational” homosexuality [or more likely actual homosexuality being explained away as situational homosexuality] and more non-standard family structures. I wonder if for non-clan genin teams if that kind of just carries over into three parent households naturally even without polyamory. “These are my parents and this is Takashi-oji who lives with us,” sort of thing. That would definitely add to the class difference between clan and non-clan shinobi–clans being more conservative and non-clans being more liberal.
Asexuality as an orientation would likewise be highly disapproved if not so easily visible–a shinobi not going out having sex for fun is odd but not interfering with their ability to do missions so that’s okay. A clan heir who is sex averse can’t continue the bloodline which is a HUGE PROBLEM. Corrective rape is a prevalent problem for asexuals IRL, no doubt in a world where bloodline is literal power that’s magnified. And, even for non-clan shinobi–if a mission includes having sex with someone then it’s expected that they do it regardless of their orientation. Genjutsu probably helps with that, but I imagine it’s not always an option.
With transgender I’m actually unsure. Because on the one hand, there are extremely rigid gender roles starting from childhood and enforced heavily (kunoichi classes–they’re separated basically week one of the Academy) but on the other hand henge seems like it would be a massively helpful resource which all graduates are expected to know. And it seems both easy to sustain with enough practice and so low level as not to be easily sensed–there are a lot of instances in canon where, unless someone is specifically looking for it, then henge isn’t caught.
Which doesn’t help with the physical transition, I know, but it’s a good option for transgender people who IRL don’t undergo the surgeries. Which again goes into the–if it’s not a visible disturbance/issue then it’s not actively disapproved.

Thinking about the concept of trans Kakashi being given a newly out Naruto and how they help each other learn and grow. Think kind of like those 5 things + 1 thing tropes, that type of vibe.
Kakashi having came out at a young age was able to get to a point where no one really knows. He'd always just gotten on with it and no one questioned that he ever could have been born female. It was all a quiet thing, they made sure he was sure about it but were willing to assist him with transitioning and not making a big fuss over it. Medical files had a note in case it was needed but it was mostly just his choice if he wanted to tell people.
Naruto however, was a loud and proud newly out trans kid. Takes it a lot harder when people slip up on names and pronouns. Willing to talk openly about how he realised and what his goals are with transitioning.
At first Kakashi struggles with having this kid around because it's never been something he felt the need to be proud about, it was another thing that just made him different after all. Who wanted to publicly share something like that?
But things start to shift the closer Naruto gets to being allowed to start hrt. Kakashi recalling his own anxieties when he was told how they'd have to do an interview with him beforehand just to make sure it was a choice he really wanted. He thought it was dumb that a bunch of cis people got the final say on him being "trans enough" to have access to medicine so he ended up offering to go with Naruto as moral support.
Whilst he wasn't allowed in the room during the interview, he'd spent the morning helping Naruto go over what the questions might be like and explaining to him that he shouldn't need their approval for something like this but that he'd support him regardless of the outcome.
He'd still never explicitly said to Naruto that he was trans too, maybe he didn't need to anymore but something in him was nagging him that he should just say something. Being the "different" kid was never an easy thing but being the trans kid came with a whole set of other issues.
Like the time he'd been genuinely taken aback by Naruto telling him how half the village didn't care what name he went by because they'd portray him as evil anyways. Kakashi had always been glad to come out so young because it saved him a lot of the social transition stress with his peers but Narutos story was just another layer of pain ontop of an already difficult situation. That was probably the first time he'd truly related to the kid.
Which made it no surprise that when Naruto reappeared with a huge smile on his face that Kakashi couldn't help but offer a sincere one back.
Kakashi is ultimately the one to teach Naruto various things from how he can cut his hair in masc ways to how to figure out his clothing sizes. He was even there to help with his first T shot, playing it off as a worry that Naruto could hurt himself if done wrong so he'd supervise to be sure nothing happened.
Navigating some topics were admittedly harder though like binding, how to do it safely, how long you can do it for, stretches that can help.
When Kakashi finally did outright confirm himself being trans he hadn't expected for Naruto to be shocked. After all how else would he know about all this stuff when most of the village hardly got even the concept of being trans?
But in typical Naruto fashion he had to listen to the excited, over exaggerated response as it finally dawned on him that there was someone else like him. When Naruto did calm down about it, Kakashi noticed that he did feel better about finally saying it, getting the words "I'm transgender" to the other person in the village who could get his experiences was just refreshing. Especially as Naruto eased the tension by explaining how he just assumed that Kakashi was a good ally like how Gai is always aggressively supportive of him. Only for Kakashi to sigh and nod. He remembered his coming out to Gai, it was the biggest most dramatic response that Kakashi would have normally hated. But it was so incredibly Gai that he just didn't mind.
Some of his old friends from his ANBU days knew too, not that they'd ever say anything without his permission.
And when Iruka had found out that Kakashi would be teaching Naruto it had sparked them to become closer so they could discuss their student. Eventually leading to him comforting Iruka that it would be strange for him to be transphobic towards another trans person. Iruka seemed to process it in waves, comfort that his student was safe, confusion in his phrasing, understanding what he meant, acceptance.
But after all this time with Naruto and seeing how the village seemed to warm up to him slowly and accept him wholly for who he is, it made him wish he had more of that acceptance rather than just keeping it something he pushed down.
So deciding it was about time to change things, he followed in Naruto's footsteps for once and started to casually bring up his gender in some conversations. Mostly just little jokes here and there. If Naruto could so bravely be open and proud, then maybe he could do.

do you have any more gender and/or sexuality headcanons besides transgender Tenzo and Kakashi?! I'd love to hear them!!
thank you for the question! i hate to disapoint, but most of the characters in naruto occupy a "could be trans, could be cis, i don't think about it much" space for me aside from 1) Yamato, 2)Kakashi and:
3+4) Naruto and Hinata are both canonically trans I obviously don't think it was intentional on Kishimotos part but Y'know I Take What I Can Get.
5) Sai. I think of him generally as amab nb, but I don't really have Strong Opinions on this or anything. its just a vibe
but yeah like I said I don't have really strong opinions on anyone else? I dont tend to think abt this stuff in depth usually unless I feel like the narrative is giving me coding I cannot resist (as in the case of Yamato)
I can Very Easily see possible readings of Lee (whose own physical experience is likely to resonate w/ trans individuals) or Shino (for a very similar reason as Kakashi) Temari and Chōji as well, I've drawn Shikamaru wearing a binder in his civilian clothes before for fun too, but like all personal interpretations of the text, these are just based on my own limited experiences and observations. this said, a valid case can be made for any character in naruto and there are a lot of creative and wonderful trans people out here who are making a lot of trans hc content if thats what ur looking for!
Unfortunately my interest in naruto is fairly narrow though, my focus is mostly on Yamato and the characters that affect him, only branching out on a whim, so I and this blog are probably not going to be of much use outside of that narrow window of interest— I don't even have particularly strong feelings on how exactly trans Yamato should manifest, other than that it feels strange for me to try and think of him as cis because his coding feels so very clearly trans to me. He could have any kind of gender identity under the sun, I just create content of him the way that I do because there is something in doing so that satisfies a creative need for me in working w/ him as a character!
