Scottish Playwright, writer and Artist John Patrick Byrne was on January 6th 1940 in Paisley.

John Byrne where he grew up in the Ferguslie Park housing scheme and was educated at the town’s St Mirin’s Academy before attending Glasgow School of Art, where he excelled. In his final year he was awarded the Bellahousten Award, the school’s most prestigious painting prize, and spent six months in Italy, returning a masterful and confident young artist. His work is held in major collections in Scotland and abroad.

Several of his paintings have hang in The Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh, the Museum of Modern Art and the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow. In 2007 he was made a full member of the Royal Scottish Academy and is an Honorary Fellow of the GSA, the RIAS, an Honorary Member of the RGI and has Honorary Doctorates from the universities of Paisley, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Strathclyde.

It was by no means an overnight success for Byrne, he was making a living designing book covers for publishers Penguin before recognition, Byrne has also designed record covers for Donovan, The Beatles, Gerry Rafferty, Billy Connolly, and The Humblebums as well as illustrations for the renowned Scottish writer James Kelman.

As well as his artwork Byrne was an accomplished writer perhaps best known as the writer of The Slab Boys Trilogy of plays which explore working-class life in Scotland, and of the excellent TV dramas Tutti Frutti and Your Cheating Heart.

In 2018 Byrne was named Scotland’s most stylish man at the age of 78 at the Scottish Style Awards in Glasgow, beating Outlander star Sam Heughan to the coveted most stylish male title, which was previously won by Richard Jobson, Robert Carlyle, James McAvoy and Paolo Nutini. Byrne, a good friend of comic, Billy Connolly Byrne said at the time he was shocked at the award saying “I dress like a tramp”.

The highlights the quintessential Scottishness of Byrne’s work, and his enduring humour and his focus on the frailty of human experience often lived on the edge of working-class communities. It is a richly rewarding show which underscores r give John Byrne a rightful place as one of Scotland’s finest and most prolific artists.

His most recent work has been murals - one for the ceiling of the King's Theatre in Edinburgh and another in Glasgow to mark the 75th birthday of his friend Billy Connolly.

During lockdown he worked with Pitlochry Festival Theatre to create a new play which was produced and performed remotely.

He and his wife Jeanine also collaborated on a children's book, Donald and Benoit.

Everything he did was drenched in colour. Without him, the world feels a less colourful place.

Summary: Crowley works for the UN. Azira is a story time lady at the library. They’re lifelong friends, and fumbling their way to acting on a lifelong mutual attraction.

Excerpt: It was early on a Thursday evening and Azira was doing her dishes in the sunny kitchen of her two-story flat in Soho Square. Cosi fan Tutti was playing on the stereo when her phone buzzed with a FaceTime call. She tapped the accept button with her knuckle, and grabbed a towel to dry off her hands.

“Hello, Crowley.” Azira smiled to see her friend’s face, sharp jawline and amber eyes framed with gorgeous red hair falling in waves to her bare collarbone. She was wearing her deep v-neck henley, and Azira wanted to bite her collarbone. The sun was out where she sat, and Azira commented on the rays that fell across Crowley’s face.

“I’m jealous,” she said.

“Yeah,” Crowley grinned, her dimples popping out, making Azira want to bite them. “It’s really doing it for me.”

Azira’s cheeks burned. She felt them, and saw them redden in her little self-view. Crowley would no doubt notice, but she’d never comment.

Dear Saturday,

It's good to see you again. I don't know how many of you I have left, but remission's holding steady. I'll have my results in two weeks, and if I'm still negative it will be 11 months. I've been a little busier than usual. My day job and the paid gig, plus that kidney stone took a whack at me.

On the Money

The paid gig is panning out, and I just handed in the last one for the year. They're happy with my work, but OMFG I am never writing porn in fandom again.

In talking with a friend, I compared it to my summer job in my hometown ice cream shop. It sounds like a dream job until you actually do it. I didn't touch ice cream again until my mid-twenties. Besides, this is writing to spec, I get very little say in the content and have to stick to the outline. Think of it as working in an ice cream shop and never getting to eat a flavor you like, but are instead served nothing but banana splits made with rum raisin, bubblegum, and tutti frutti ice cream, topped with crushed maraschino cherries. The company's given up on AI completely so far as written content, it's just unworkable with results either laughable, incomprehensible, or appalling.

Do they even make rum raisin ice cream any longer?

In any case, between last year and this year, my medical expenses out of pocket are $35,000. That's with donations. I've been lucky that my boss supported me by paying my rent for six months and I had a load of unused PTO. I need to stuff that back into savings stat, and my PPO premiums are going up by $100 this year. I need five more novels to get even, then three more to cover my premiums for the year. I also want to cover my out-of-pocket, up to $9k from $7k. My paycheck needs to cover basics, and I do not want to tap savings more than strictly necessary.

In the Kitchen

It's Thanksgiving this coming Thursday, and it's one I did not expect to see. I didn't do holidays last year. I laid in bed with my incisions and ileostomy bag, and I slept. Today was cooking day, and I've had a busy morning 5-cheese tortellini with peas and mushrooms. Roasted Italian sausages. Also made egg-roll-inna-bowl. My Thanksgiving menu is duck leg and thigh confit, with a Caesar salad, wild rice and mushroom soup, potatoes roasted in duck fat, and pumpkin mousse.

If you like duck and have a sous vide, making duck or goose confit is easy. Put the leg-and-thigh in a sous vide or ziplock bag with salt, pepper, garlic powder, PSR&T and sous vide for at least 12 hours. Duck and goose have enough fat that you don't need to add much additional fat, and that yummy fat is great for roasting the potatoes. The longer you cook it, the more tender the meat. Take it out and run under the broiler to crisp it up.

Horizontally

The housework and cooking done, it's cool, grey, and raining. I've made the couch into a nest, partly claimed by the kitties. It's time to read and drink peppermint hot chocolate. I've been reading Susan Gulbar's 'Memoir of a Debulked Woman' and have Patrick Keefe's 'Empire of Pain' queued. Aside from Thrawn and Star Wars in general, my tastes run to nonfiction, I have a lot of Thrantovember catching up to so, but... bed so soft, kitties so enticing, and books awaiting me.

Ricciardo completes seat fit with AlphaTauri By Balazs Szabo on 15 Jul 2023, 13:02 Just a few days after AlphaTauri announced his return to Formula One, Daniel Ricciardo has taken the next step by having completed a seat fit ahead of next weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix. After ten races into the 2023 F1 season, AlphaTauri has decided to part ways with Nyck de Vries because the team felt that the former Formula 2 and Formula E champion could not live up to expectations. The Dutchman made a shock debut in last year’s Italian Grand Prix when he replaced Alexander Albon. While he could score two points with an eye-catching ninth-place finish on his debut in Monza, he has failed to score a single point in his 10 grands prix as a full-time F1 driver. De Vires finished most recently 17th at Silverstone, a place behind his team-mate Yuki Tsunoda, who is currently completing his third season in Formula One. Speaking to the De Telegraaf, Red Bull consultant Helmut Mark said: “We contracted Nyck because he performed well at Monza last year. We expected him to at least be equal to his team-mate Yuki Tsunoda this year but that was not the case. “He was always three-tenths of a second slower. We didn’t see any improvements. He’s 28, has a lot of experience, and has also been able to gain a lot of knowledge as a test driver in various F1 cars. You can’t compare him to a young rookie.” The Faenza-based outfit announced this Thursday that Daniel Ricciardo would replace the outgoing Dutchman, taking over his car from the Hungarian Grand Prix. The Italian team will be not new to the Australian driver as he completed his second season with them following his debut races with the HRT F1 Team in 2011. Ricciardo spent the 2012 and 2013 season with Toro Rosso before having moved on to Red Bull Racing for the following five season with the spell saw him clinch seven F1 race victories. In 2019, the Perth-born driver had made the shock switch to Renault before he joined McLaren for the 2021 campaign. However, with Ricciardo unable to display his earlier performance level, McLaren and the Australian terminated their contract a year early, by mutual agreement. While he spent the first half of the current F1 season without a race seat and as Red Bull’s reserve driver, Ricciardo is set to make a shock return to the championship as de Vries’ replacement. The Australian has already visited the AlphaTauri’s Faenza factory and completed his important seat fit ahead of his return to the sport at next Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix. Days of the week - sayings and usages

Let's talk about the week (it doesn't understand 🎵) -- no fr, let's talk about the days of the week! And sorry for this late 90s throwback (Prezioso and Marvin, it's still Italian dance music anyway lol)

Anyway

The post I reblogged yesterday from @spanishskulduggery reminded me of some sayings and songs we have related to the days of the week. And I admit I felt kinda bad about this Wednesday-shaming, so here I am :)

"Né di Venere né di Marte ci si sposa né si parte... né si dà principio all'arte". (= You don't get married on Tuesday -Marte+dì- or on Friday -Venere+dì-, nor you start any endeavour). The first bit is the most famous tbh, as we often repeat it even for someone's marriage or when someone is leaving for holidays.

"Mercoledì!" - As mentioned in this post and in the comments too, we (as Spanish) may use "Mercoledì" to not swear (well, to not say "merda" plainly tbh, or to actually mention it in a more "imaginative/mild" way as I added in the reblog... it depends a bit)

We also have the very famous saying "Thursday dumplings, Friday fish, Saturday tripe" = Giovedì gnocchi, venerdì pesce, sabato trippa. You may hear us saying these separately according on the day we're in (or that gets mentioned) as well.

"Gli/Le manca un/qualche venerdì" (he/she misses a/some Friday/s, literally). You can use this sentence when you want to refer to someone that seems a bit weird or eccentric, even crazy. Sometimes you may hear "Non hai tutti i venerdì a posto" (you don't have all the Fridays in the right place). Some may use "giovedì" instead of "venerdì", tbh but I generally hear Friday the most. This probably originates from the fact that Thursday and Friday are kinda central days of the week and missing them the week is incomplete and therefore "not entirely sane".

There are some sayings about "Venerdì" but honestly I have never really heard of them. Still, here you have the main one (meanings are basically the same): "Chi ride il venerdì, piange la domenica" = Those who laugh on Friday, cry on Sunday. I believe this is simply not true lol.

"E il sabato? E il sabato fa così🎶" (by La Rua)

Francesco Salvi, singer, published the album "In gita col Salvi" in 1992. The songs are mostly about our cultural (and Regional, at times, as you may hear some Lombardo here and here) background -eg: La macchina del capo, Mamma mia dammi 100 lire, Vecchio Scarpone, FlikFlok-, and he made them in a kinda different/more excited(?) way. One of them is related to the days of the week and it's this one. The link will bring you to the whole album's list though, so feel free to give a listen to others as well.
