i know the main reason mai got to be in the final scene of atla and not ty lee is because she was dating zuko, a very main character. but also. where would they have put ty lee, heterosexually? hanging around with mai, like usual? that's gay. with her new kyoshi warrior friend, suki? gay. joining katara in making fun of sokka's art? gay. getting to talk to toph for the first time? gay! we can't see too much of her post-azula-breakup because she is a lesbo off the leash & she will do gay things

How would you make Tytara play out? Either in a modern AU setting or in your own personal works?

thank u for asking me abt my secret tytara agenda so like i said in the server it's gotta be a modern au with social media, and it's gotta be enemies to lovers. ideally enemies to friends to lovers. ty lee has to be portrayed like. accurate to her actual character and not the nonsense way most people portray her as. so she gets to be mean, manipulative, fake as hell, AND also full of love and light. she can be all of those things! canon supports that version of her! so ofc with all these awful traits, ty lee is an influencer. i'm thinking tiktok but like addison rae tiktok like she's marketing herself to straight white neurotypicals, the whole shebang. she is, naturally, problematic but popular anyway.

katara on the other hand... well first, she's herself again not like fanon katara. she is a social justice advocate who's like twitter famous and also makes video essays on youtube. she does a whooole video essay about anti-indigenous racism in influencer culture, dissecting language and appropriation and colorism and all that kind of stuff, and she namedrops ty lee as one of those racist influencers.

now ty lee has a brand to protect. she is NOT getting canceled in this lifetime! so she reaches out to katara, fake as ever, saying she saw the video, she's been doing some theory reading, etc, and she wants to know if katara would be willing to sit down with her and do a video where they discuss where to go from being called out. all for pr purposes ofc, ty lee is a girlboss that way.

katara messages back, thinking ty lee is being fake as fuck which she is, and calls her on her shit. they start a little feud in their dms that katara, who is a cancer, would expose through screenshots because she's messy and passionate that way. ty lee says, "fuck, now i've really got to get a handle on this." she asks mai and azula what she should do. azula is not helpful, suggests framing katara for a crime or cancelable offense (now is not the time for white collar girlbossery). mai is reasonable and suggests ty lee just try actually learning the error of her ways or something because she's exasperated with this conversation. ty lee begrudgingly reads a book or two and then issues a more sincere but still petty motivated apology to katara and anyone else she's hurt with her actions.

katara sees this, shows her friends, and toph encourages her to be messy and do an actual video with ty lee after all to see if she really has changed, esp since katara has been getting death threats and crazy shit like that from ty lee's deranged sycophants. and azula on her burner account that she had to be taught to make for this purpose. katara goes through with it, realizes ty lee is a bit of an asshole but she's not fundamentally a bad person, and also katara has gay panic because ty lee is 100% very flirty and friendly during this.

Ship Stats for Ty Lee (Updated and Complete)

Back in October I was already curious about Ty Lee’s ship stats, but after wearing myself out doing the ship stats for Mai, settled on doing a shorter, less intensive version.

Now that it’s January, it’s finally time to do an in depth survey for Ty Lee.

Methods

On January 1, 2023, I took a survey of works for 23 Ty Lee ships from 01/01/2013 to 12/31/2022. 

Data 

This chart is for the totals of the sample surveyed. And the other is a table of the chart’s raw numbers.

This is the chart of the total Ty Lee ship fics broken down by year. It included the top 10 ships (Tyzula, MaiLee, Tysuki, Ty Luko, Ty Lokka, Ty Laang, TophLee, Jet Lee, Tytara and Haru/Ty Lee)

And here’s the table for the both the 10 ships in the chart, as well as one showing all 23 ships in the sample

Then there’s this chart that shows the year to year output of works rather than the total. It features the same 10 ships as the previous chart.

Observations

Total sample of works by year

Before 2020, the growth of the sample never exceeded 100 works

2021 was the year where the most Ty Lee ship works were added

2022 became the third most productive year, and while behind both 2020 and 2022, remained significantly higher than every pre-2020 year

2022 saw the addition of three new Ty Lee ships: Iroh/Ty Lee, Kei Lo/Ty Lee and Longshot/Ty Lee.

Cumulative count by year

in terms of total fic count, tyzula has consistently remained the Ty Lee ship with the most works.

MaiLee has been in second place for every year except 2013. That year, Ty Lokka held second place.

In 2013, MaiLee held third place. From 2014 to 2016, Ty Lokka held third place.

In 2017, Tysuki and Ty Lokka tied for third/fourth, and since 2018 Tysuki has held third place.

Annual output by year

Tyzula has consistently held first place from 2014 to 2022, as well as accounted for the majority Ty Lee ship works until 2021. 

Despite dropping below 50% in 2021, tyzula still maintains a plurality. Though 2022’s output by percentage is the lowest it’s ever been (43%)

With the exception of 2015, MaiLee had consistently held second place.

MaiLee’s highest output year was 2020, at 40%. This has slightly declined to 33%, but is still far above how most pre-2020 years performed.

Third place in terms of annual output has been more varied. From a Tysuki-Ty Lokka tie in 2014, to MaiLee in 2015, a Ty Lokka-Ty Laang tie in 2016, before only Tysuki in 2017 and 2018. Then from 2019 to 2022, Ty Luko and Tysuki take turns in third place.

Despite appearances by percentage, Tysuki and Ty Luko’s 2022 output are behind their 2021 output.

The Ty Lee ships that outperformed their 2021 numbers in 2022 are: Ty Laang and Jet Lee

Other observations 

Every year, the annual output of F/F Ty Lee works is greater than the output of  to M/F Ty Lee works

2022 is the first year since 2019 that the percentage of F/F Ty Lee ship works has fallen below 90%

Ty Lee blinks awake, soft early-morning light coming in through the window. A snow-covered tree branch is just visible through the window and small icicles hang from the top of the window. It snowed! Katara will be delighted.

Ty Lee rolls over, preparing to get out of the warm bed. A pair of arms follow her, curling around her waist. "Mmf."

"Katara, honey, I need to get up," Ty Lee says softly. "I need to do my morning stretches."

"Noooo." Katara's arms tighten. "Staaay."

"If I stay here, how can I make hot chocolate to celebrate the snow?"

There is a brief silence. Katara's arms are warm around Ty Lee's waist, but her fingers are icy where they've snuck under Ty Lee's shirt.

"Chocolate later," Katara finally says. "Cuddle now."

Ty Lee wiggles around under the covers to face her girlfriend. "Ooor... what if I get up now?"

"Stay?" Katara traces circles on Ty Lee's back, her eyes drifting closed. "Please?"

Ty Lee sighs, reaching around Katara to pull her closer. "Fine. Fifteen minutes. Then I need to go do my stretches."

Katara's smile grows and she snuggles closer. Ty Lee runs her fingers through Katara's dark hair, watching her girlfriend fall back to sleep.

Katara is asleep before fifteen minutes are over, but Ty Lee stays a bit longer. The morning is peaceful, and today, she has nowhere else to be. She can stay here, in this moment, with Katara.
