I’m watching “Voltron: Legendary Defender” for the first time and these are my compiled thoughts.

Pre-Season 3

->I originally got super sad about that, but then she became the blue one and I was really happy. But I was reallyyyy confused about the schematics of the switches. (still kinda am) like the lions don’t fit their personalities. And isn’t it the point that they get chosen for a reason?? Like when the blue one chose Lance in s1? And the red one chose Kieth, etc. ?? I guess it makes sense for them to call on other paladins when Shiro “dies” (his ass is not dead, I’m 100% sure of that) but Allura fits Black/Red better imo.

-> But then again, I did like how it was executed/explained. “Oh Lance ur the new red one cus you accepted Keith as ur leader and now you have to be the right hand. Get it cus red is Voltron’s right arm??” like yeah. And of course:

-> this season was huge for klance apparently. They have so many moments together. When they get dragged by evil elsa Lotor to that weird planet and have their lions talk face to face, the shoulder touch, them seeking each other out for/being the first to give the other comfort/reassurance, “Leave the math to Pidge” , Lance being the most upset that Keith isn’t at the parade thing, their teamwork in “Tailing a Comet”, “Yeah, who am I gonna make fun of?”

You guys just kept winning this season honestly slay.

-> The Lore drop that Coran did about the creation of Voltron/Original Paladins. Bro

-> I loved all the S1 call backs to the original paladins “I’m a leg!” Like yeah 🩷 you are 💛 and the og blue paladin does the “lance in the intro” thing

->^When they form Voltron for the first time in the flashback, the colors are brighter, much like the original 80s show’s colors, and the captions later read “Defender of the Universe”, which was the name of the original Voltron show. This is an especially fun detail because not only are they honoring the “original paladins/voltron” of the show’s lore, they are also doing so in reference to the original show itself, which I think is all so beautiful

-> We get Shiro back! I knew he wasn’t dead. Low key I was scared he lost another arm or something but no! He’s okay 🖤🤍

-> I did some research and it turns out he is in fact 25, I don’t know whether to be happier or sadder for him. On one hand, thank fuck he’s not like 15-17 like the others, on the other hand, he should be at the club. He should be finding love, he should be at his 9-5 paying taxes and doing laundry not having his arm chopped off and replaced with magic and having to fight in the space coliseum and then escaping and having to pilot a giant robot and be a part of an intergalactic war. (I suppose that last part is true for all of them, but the rest is shiro-specific, and it all makes me a little sad)

-> call me crazy but he looked hotter when his hair was long

-> on that note, WHERE did he find a razor. Did he just use a sword or something?? Like in mulan??

-> in “Tailing a Comet”, they apparently meet alternate space reality!Kuvira from atla:lok , and ASR!Bataar Jr. I mean, really, down to the bun and the mole, as well as the controlling dictatorship-esque behavior and the “really, this is actually for their own good” attitude when it comes to said controlling behavior. Did the writers of each show just share ideas or??

-> im so serious with that last question. The thing that came out of the “quintessence rift” that the original paladins had to fight? A dark spirit from LoK: Book 2: Spirits. Whatever tf happened to zarkon when he got too close? When Unalaq got possessed by Vaatu. I mean really, were they just passing cards like go fish?

->I genuinely cried when Keith left for the Blade of Marmora (to save time, I’m gonna start calling them the “Blades” or “BOM”)

-> however, I feel like him leaving for the blades is gonna be really plot relevant later on

-> I think that’s when S3 ended im pretty sure. I don’t have further thoughts other than those I could’ve discussed if I could upload enough pictures for my S4 thoughts that accompanied them.

These are thoughts I’ve had compiled for a while. I finished S3 on 06/26/24 and S4 on 06/30/24. As of today (07/3/24) I am on S5E3.

Doing kill counts of the ATLA universe out of boredom (not including the Yangchen or Roku novels because I have not read them yet, so no spoilers).

Sozin: Unknown, but he committed genocide on the Air Nomads, so at least thousands.

Azulon and Ozai: Unknown but are to blame for the death of thousands, maybe millions.

Jianzhu: Kelsang, Saiful, Chamberlain Hui and a few other sages, all those Yellow Necks-- he had confirmed kill count of over 5000 people.

Tagaka: Unknown amount of people, but she killed Amak and clearly killed more. So at least one known and many others unknown.

Amak: Unknown but he was a professional assassin, so-- yeah, probably a dozen or two at least.

Kelsang: The Living Typhoon! He caused the deaths of a bunch of pirates. Unknown amount of kills, though.

Hei-Ran: Unknown amount of kills, but she had the record of most kills during Agni Kais, so several people at least.

Yun: Like four randos in the Earth Kingdom, Jianzhu, Lu Beifong, Chancellor Dairin, a bunch of Fire Nation guards, Father Glowworm-- like a dozen kills at least.

Kyoshi: Killed Xu Ping An, Yun and Chin the Conqueror, so known kill count of three. Unknown, definitely more.

Lao Ge: Unknown but probably many people.

Kuruk: No known human kills, but did slay several dark spirits.

Gyatso: He was surrounded by a lot of corpses of Firebenders, so the guy definitely killed like a dozen people at least.

Aang (possessed by the Ocean Spirit): A few hundreds at least. Then again that wasn't really him because the kid was possessed, that was the Ocean Spirit*

Zhao: One known, the original Moon Spirit.

Long Feng: One, Jet. Thought it was really unclear at the time.

Yon Rha: One known, Kya.

Sokka: One, Combustion Man*

Azula: One, Aang. Sure he came back but the kid was dead.

Ursa: One, Azulon.

Zaheer: The Earth Queen, and I guess you could kinda count Aiwei? Though he didn't really die. Anyway, one or two.

Ghazan: I guess you can count himself?

Tarrlok: Two, himself and Noatak.

Unalaq: One, Raava I guess? She came back though.

Korra: Technically One, Unavaatu. Sure, her uncle was gonna die anyway, but she finished the job and felt responsible for not saving him, so she kinda saw it as killing him.

Mako: One, he killed Ming-Hua with lightning.

Suyin: One, he killed P'Li.

Kuvira: Hiroshi and two guards, so like three.

So far I can't think of any other deaths? Like there's people like Iroh who was a general and most likely killed people as well, and you can argue that the rest of the Gaang likely took some more lives (most of all Sokka, Toph and Suki while they were taking down those airships during the comet, I mean someone had to fucking die there c'mon), as well as probably believing that the rest of the Red Lotus killed as well. And more probable kills from more people. But no confirmation though lmao.

Random thought about Korra’s responsibility ending the Avatar cycle.

IT WASN’T HER FAULT. She was a teenager that was manipulated by a family member who was also a world leader and was also apart of a secret terrorist group that she trusted not to lead her astray. He used her to start a civil war and open the spirit portals so HE could release 10,000 years of darkness on the world. Once Korra realized her role in the plan she tried to correct the actions that led to the conflict that Unalaq had planned probably for years. We saw how conniving he was when he convinced his father-The Chief of the Northern Water Tribe- to exile Tonraq for treason.

Let’s also not forget that Unalaq and Vaatu tried to kill Korra by crushing her in the ground and that they literally ripped Raava from Korra’s body THROUGH HER MOUTH (which was probably excruciatingly painful) and beat Raava within an inch of her life while Korra could do nothing except watch because the avatar spirit was forcibly removed from her.

Korra didn’t end the Avatar cycle. Unavaatu did. And even though when I first watched Book 2 I disliked it as much as everyone else, I guess I just realized today why it grinds my gears. (Also I appreciate book 2 more than I did when it first aired)

Saying it’s Korra’s fault that the avatar cycle ended is vicious victim blaming especially when you consider that only months before this fight she tried to end her life because Amon took her bending.

All of Korra’s villains stole pieces of her identity and essence which is why no matter how cool conceptually her villains are, I will never say I like them or support them. The emotional scars they all left Korra broke her. So for anyone to say that it was her fault is not only wrong, it’s cruel.

Especially since Korra *DID* blame herself for every perceived failure she had including the ending of the avatar cycle.

Losing the Avatar cycle wasn’t shown in a positive light. It was grieved and situated as a plot device to start over because just like in real life, sometimes we lose everything and have to move forward with whatever pieces we have and forge our own way.

The fandom is so ridiculous about Korra and the reasons they don’t like her. Especially since the main reason people don’t like her is because she isn’t Aang.

I've recently finished TLOK & there for joined the fandom and... Did we even watch the same show???

(Very long & passionate rant under cut)

Like mf wdym Korra is the worst/weakest Avatar? It's physically not possible for her to be the weakest as the cycle goes on the Avatar spirt gets stronger so technically the weakest Avatar is Wan!! But I still want to point out the many reasons why Korra isn't the weakest or worst Avatar.

Firstly, I want to acknowledge vaid criticisms of Korra. Yes she constantly underestimated her opponents but in her defense she was severely inexperienced. She'd spent most of her life in that training facility in the south Pole and then once she got to republic city was almost immediately thrown into dealing with the equalits so she underestimated Amon due to lack of experience. She was then manipulated by her uncle so can you really blame her for not realizing he was evil till it was too late? THAT WAS HER FAMILY!!

Anyways, Korra has faults like every Avatar but she also has feats that you all seem to forget/over look!

My main example and my favorite to bring up in this argument is; Korra on harmonic convergence after having Raava RIPPED from her (need to emphasize the fact that Korra did not give Raava up willing like some of y'all like to think, she fought to keep Raava with her and was devastated when she lost her and the past lives. She didn't give it up willingly) meaning she didn't have the Avatar state and this fight was just her pure strength against UnaVaatu.

KORRA BEAT HIS ASS WITH NO BENDING, NO AVATAR STATE, NO PAST LIVES, NO NOTHING. KORRA FIST FOUGHT THE SPIRIT OF CHAOS AND DARKNESS AND WON!

But I have more examples of how strong she truly is (there is no order to them lol).

Korra broke out of Blood bending without the Avatar state (something Aang couldn't do).

She had control over 3/4 of the elements at like five, and the only reason it took so long to master Air bending (which still only took like a few months) was because she didn't get a teacher until she was 17!

Korra fought one of the strongest air benders WHILE DYING, like ppl forget she was slowly dying during that fight. She was weakened and still won.

Now let's talk about another one of my favorite feats of hers, REDIRECTING THE AVATAR UNIVERSE VERSION OF A FUCKING NUKE. Like it was so powerful it ripped open a whole in space & time, creating a new spirit portal and she redirected it and wasn't even fazed. Like I'm 90% sure she didn't even break a sweat!

She's the first Avatar to metal bend, ik it's likely because she's the first Avatar to exist when metal bending was more common but she was metal bending in like a week! That's not something anyone can do!!

Another reason I have is technically not about her strength but more about the strength of Korra's version of Raava. When Korra re-fused with Raava, the Raava spirit was bigger than it was when it was ripped from her and alot bigger than the version Wan fused with meaning Korra has a stronger version of Raava than previous Avatars making her inherently stronger than them. When Korra re-fused with Raava, she was big enough for Korra to ride on her but when Wan fused with her Raava fit in a tea pot.

Now time to defend Korra's loses!

・Korra lost against Amon because she was inexperienced, she'd spent most of her life away from the world and wasn't prepared to fight a master water bender.

・Korra lost Raava because it was supposed to happen. Ever Harmonic convergence Raava and Vaatu fight so it's likely that ever 10,000 year's the avatar cycle will restart, also did we not watch Korra be absolutely DEVASTATED that she lost her connect with the last Avatars? Like she spends most of the time during the 4th season wishing she could talk to Aang!

・Honestly I don't even know if Korra won or lost against Zaheer but I do know she was slowly dying during the fight. She was no where near her full strength! Also, the red lotus was actively surprised at how well Korra fought against going into the Avatar state just showing her control over it.

・Korra got her ass beat in that ring in the earth kingdom because she was rusty and GOING THROUGH IT! Like she hadn't fought in 3 year's and she was still working through her turama, it's the samething when she lost to old Toph, she was rusty, still being affected by the poison, and traumatized. There was on way she was going to win in that state

・ Korra lost in her 1v1 with Kuvira because she was rusty, she hadn't fought in 3 year's and you expect her to be as good as she was before her hiatus? Bitch please! Korra quite literally goes on to go toe to toe with Kuvira at the end of the season when she'd worked through her rust.

In conclusion, Korra isn't the wort or weakest Avatar your just over looking her feats and dumbing her down because you can't except your fav isn't as strong as you think. She was ment to restart the Avatar cycle, and she also isn't even in her prime! She's 17 in the first season, 18 in season 2 & 3, and 21 in the last season, Korra is still at the beginning of her career as an Avatar. She's only going to get stronger.

Also no, I'm not a Korra glazer. She's not even my favorite Avatar, it's Kiyoshi.

It’s, mayhaps, a little au thingy where Vaatu sort of realizes Unalaq has been manipulating him and instead of agreeing to be his avatar spirit he refuses, leading to a fight.

(Actually I drew it for a separate story I’m working on with a friend but that’s a loooong explanation so have this AU instead)

Endgame

Bolin, Asami, and Iroh are captured by Hiroshi Sato and the Equalists, but rescued by Naga. While Asami and Bolin fight Hiroshi and his mecha-tanks, Iroh destroys the Equalist bombers. Korra and Mako confront Amon at an Equalist rally, and expose him as a bender. Amon denies it and reveals that he has captured Tenzin and his young family. Korra and Mako free them, but Amon overpowers Mako and Korra, and removes Korra's bending abilities except for her airbending, which she later unlocks and uses against him. Expelled by her, Amon falls into the sea, and his escape unmasks him publicly as a waterbender. He flees Republic City, along with Tarrlok, who later explodes their boat and themselves. At the South Pole, Katara is unable to heal Korra's severance from water, earth, and fire. As Korra sits weeping at a cliff's edge, Aang's spirit fully restores her spiritual connection and bending abilities and Korra enters the Avatar State to restore Beifong's bending abilities. Everyone watches in awe and amazement with Tenzin addressing her as Avatar Korra.

Light in the Dark

Tenzin and his siblings find Korra and her friends wounded and unconscious. Once healed by Kya, Korra states that with Raava gone the cycle is over and she is now likely the last Avatar. Unavaatu attacks Republic City. During the attack, Varrick escapes prison. In the Spirit World, Tenzin leads Korra to the Tree of Time and tells her to meditate within it. As she meditates, Korra unlocks previously untapped spiritual potential and teleports to Republic City to discover a fragment of Raava within Vaatu; the spirits of light and dark cannot exist without each other and one will always regrow from within the other. Jinora's spirit illuminates the fragment, and Korra withdraws Raava and purifies Unavaatu, killing Unalaq and defeating Vaatu. Tenzin, Kya, Bumi, Mako, Bolin, Desna and Eska defend Korra's body from attacking dark spirits. Korra and Raava return and use Harmonic Convergence to re-merge; the Avatar Spirit is reformed, but Korra's link with the previous Avatars appears to remain lost. After deep contemplation, Korra decides to leave the spirit portals open, believing that spirits and humans can find a way to coexist and should be allowed the chance. She also declares the Southern Water Tribe to now be independent from the North as its own state. Korra and Mako end their romantic relationship, but pledge to remain friends. Korra declares that the world has entered into a new age.

Unalaq is probably the worst received villain from The Legend of Korra, but there was something about him that bothered me from the first episode to the last, even if those issues evolved and shifted.

What Unalaq was

I’ll start off with his design that Bryan admits to being too similar to Tarrlok 

Despite my earlier speculation of possible parallels to Azula, Unalaq is probably best described as a mixture of Azula, Ozai and Iroh

One part Azula, as in written most likely in a manner like Prince Azul from the series Bible/original outline of ATLA. 

(Yet another) villainous father, like Ozai and Yakone before him. The major difference being that while the other two have moments of confirmed or attempted physical abuse, Unalaq’s is confined more to verbally berating his children. 

An evil mentor archetype similar to the original plan for Iroh in the series Bible/original draft. Though here, Unalaq is manipulating Korra to his own ends rather than sabotaging her the way first draft Iroh was supposed to be sabotaging Zuko. (Being Korra’s uncle just hammers the parallel in more)

The Ozai and original version of Iroh similarities are further reinforced with Korra’s choice between him and Tonraq/Tenzin as a compressed version of Zuko’s choice between Ozai and Iroh

All in all, Unalaq almost seems like a greatest hits of previous villain concepts, for what for a time could’ve been the final season. Yet the concept falls flat because of the weird choices around his goals and motivations.

He’s supposed to “have a deep connection to spirits” and be frustrated with the disconnect between humans and spirits

But he’s also a schemer who got his brother banished so he could become Chief of the Northern Water Tribe

And everything he does in the season, manipulating Korra, trying to get Tonraq imprisoned for life, occupying the Southern Water Tribe is in service to reopening the spirit portals supposedly

But not just to reopen the spirit portals, but also free Vaatu, for whom Unalaq was working for/with the whole time?

Unalaq claims to disbelieve that Vaatu is as dangerous as he seems, and claims that Wan only brought chaos

So his solution is to side with Vaatu so he can counter the Avatar?

The best I can come up with is that Unalaq got deceived by Vaatu, much like Wan did. Except that falls flat because what could’ve been so convincing to ignore every warning that Vaatu wanted to end life as everyone knew it?

And in the end, it doesn’t matter what Unalaq wanted since Unavaatu only wants what Vaatu wanted: 10,000 years of darkness (not even getting into the rest of the mess with Vaatu)

What bothered me about Unalaq

Initially, what bothered me about Unalaq was the missed opportunity of him as Korra’s teacher. From the little we see of him instructing Korra, he was a better teacher than Tenzin. Korra still had to work on spiritually and relating to spirits, but Tenzin’s methods weren’t likely to work. (In fact, when he has tries to guide her into the Spirit World, Tenzin explicitly fails.)

Unalaq not only seemed to have a better teaching relationship with her, but also could’ve been an opportunity to explore Water Tribe spiritual traditions and let Korra connect herself to that, rather than the franchise’s insistence that airbenders have a monopoly on spirituality.

The worst part is even under the framework of a villainous Unalaq, they still could’ve done more with the concept. Unalaq teaches Korra is spirit transformation technique offscreen, and despite Korra later having bitter feelings over it because Unalaq only taught her things to manipulate her, it’s still something she uses for the rest of the season. Some extra time with the two of them practicing could’ve fleshed out the relationship, lessons Korra learned besides bending, provided further opportunity to flesh out Unalaq’s philosophy and beliefs, with room to foreshadow the flaws.

The other thing that bothers me, aside from the whole working for Vaatu angle, is that if Unalaq really was about opening the spirit portals, all he needed to do was convince Korra that leaving them open was a better option. Which she decided to anyway, making freeing and fusing with Vaatu pointless. But that goal was also undermined by his need to have Tonraq imprisoned. 

Also, what is with Tonraq and Unalaq’s relationship? Why are they like this? How does this fit with the rest? I have no answers, only more questions

If Raava is Hylia in this AU, does that mean Vaatu is Demise? If so, did Ganondorf already have the spirit when he was born (like some sort of Dark Avatar reincarnation), or did they merge later on (like Unavaatu)?

Yes, Hylia does take place of Raava in the LU/ATLA Au.

And in that sense, Demise is Vaatu.

In Demise’s curse from the Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword, Demise creates the endless cycle between the blood of the goddess, the hero’s spirit, and the incarnation of hatred.

Now in the LU/ATLA there’s only the spirit of the avatar and the incarnation of hatred.

So in short, yes. Ganondorf is the incarnation of hatred.

However he won’t have ability to control the four elements like the Avatar.

Ganondorf is the incarnation of hatred not power. In all of the Zelda Games which Ganondorf is in, he has to gain this power. He isn’t born to power, sure he is the Kings of the Gerudo, but in a world in bigger and stronger armies that title can only do so much.

But while he may not have the elemental powers, that does not mean he doesn’t have powers.

The ritual Ganondorf used on Avatar Rauru consisted of dark magic. If it were anyone else, it would have never worked.

If anyone else would have even attempted to do the ritual Ganondorf used on Avatar Rauru, it would have failed before it even begun. It would’ve killed them.

But with the incarnation of hatred inside him, it allowed the seams of the Spirit Realm and spirits to bend around him.

Another power Ganondorf gains, or more so discovers, is the ability to corrupt spirits.

Much like how Vaatu’s essence can transform spirits into dark spirits in the Legend of Korra.

Ganondorf always had this ability.

An ability given to him through the incarnation.

However in the Mortal Realm, where not many spirits reside in, the ability never truly revealed itself.

Before in the Mortal Realm, to corrupt a spirit he would of had to be near the spirit for a long time before it fell to his corruption.

But upon entering the Spirit Realm, it is there when his power finally comes into full realization.

Channeling his hatred into the spirits, he learns how to corrupt the spirits and bend them into his every will.

And with the fragment of the Avatar Spirit? It only empowers him even more.
