the bard in the field: autoethnography as alchemy in the age of collapse

hi. i’m solara bell. bard. oracle. scholar of the liminal. i don’t share what i’ve studied. i become the study.

in this post (and the ones to come), i’m offering what i call bardic autoethnography—field notes from a life lived at the intersection of eros, scholarship, divinity, and collapse. this is a body of work about embodiment.

🌍✍🏾🧬 my heartbreaks are data. my orgasms, curriculum. every dream, a lecture. i walk between timelines as both witness and transmitter. my life is a dissertation in motion—and i’ve decided it’s worthy of distinction.

📡🧠💗 this isn’t a memoir. this is a field report from the folds of frequency and the edges of form. my method is intimacy. my theory is eros. my ethics say no data is neutral—and the most powerful information is personal.

what if academic rigor includes divine pleasure? what if archiving a love affair becomes a study in planetary healing? what if your “mess” is actually an encoded upgrade?

🧬🪶🗺️ i research like a blackbird flies: circular. urgent. soulful. i annotate with emojis. my footnotes are frequencies. my citations are claircognizant. my findings live in venmo comments, folk songs, angel numbers, and heartbreak.

the names for this method? bardic autoethnography. saturn return fieldwork. the diva’s dissertation.

this is where the sacred meets the scholarly. this is where we make our own canon.

most of my day was pretty crap but i did get to go to the library science holiday party for an hour before my concert call and i not only got free dinner out of it but i also somehow managed to win two (2) raffle items. the first was a university sweatshirt and the second was a branded tote bag w more stuff inside. i ended up letting them re-draw the raffle for the sweatshirt bc i don't really need it and i felt weird claiming two raffle items, the tote bag was what i was really interested in anyway. not only is it a nice tote with a zipper and an inside pocket and everything it also came with a t shirt, a button, a mug, an Insulated mug, a travel umbrella, and a water bottle. thought that last bit is especially funny to me given the fact that they handed out door prizes to everyone just for showing up. which were. Different (less nice) branded tote bags with a note pad and water bottle in them. so now i just have two identical LIS water bottles

Heck, Protactile is an incredibly new language (a real, separate language, not just a system, though there is a bit of a culture of communication that informed how it developed) that grew from deafblind people in the US in the mid-2000s going "this isn't working as well as we want" about tactile ASL and other ways they communicated together.

There are, like, at least seven ways I can think of for deaf, blind, and deafblind people to talk to each other that already exist, as long as everyone in the interaction shares one language (or one person in the interaction knows a language that can bridge other people, i.e. like what a terp would do): Protactile (if people know/are picking it up), tactile ASL (or another sign language all present know), that thing some people do where they gently hold a signer's arms so that the sign window stays in their field of vision, writing flat text large enough to read in a language everyone present knows, writing braille (if those present know it), typing into a device and having a screen reader read it out or generate it on a braille display, and, of course, an interpreter (either the kind of friend who might do that in a friend group... or... like... a paid one).

All of these are easier than a student project on Github (that some people in the notes are saying she didn't even code herself, but I don't want to throw accusations around) that had a goal of recognizing only seven ASL signs. (And which needs, according to how the production in the video looks, either unnatural or outright incorrect sign production in some cases (wrong handshapes, weird or absent movement, etc.) in order to give a semi-confident guess.)

A computer science student named Priyanjali Gupta, studying in her third year at Vellore Institute of Technology, has developed an AI-based model that can translate sign language into English.
