HTML Text Formatting
HTML provides various tags to format text, allowing you to change the appearance and structure of your content. Here's a guide to the most commonly used text formatting tags in HTML:
1. Headings
HTML provides six levels of headings, from <h1> (most important) to <h6> (least important). Headings are used to create titles and organize content hierarchically.<h1>Main Heading</h1> <h2>Subheading</h2> <h3>Sub-subheading</h3> <h4>Sub-sub-subheading</h4> <h5>Sub-sub-sub-subheading</h5> <h6>Smallest Heading</h6>
2. Paragraphs
Paragraphs are used to group blocks of text together. HTML automatically adds space before and after paragraphs.<p>This is a paragraph of text. Paragraphs are block-level elements, meaning they take up the full width available.</p>
3. Line Breaks
To create a line break within a paragraph or other text, use the <br> tag. This tag is an empty element and doesn’t have a closing tag.<p>This is the first line.<br>This is the second line, on a new line.</p>
4. Horizontal Lines
A horizontal line (thematic break) can be created using the <hr> tag. This is often used to separate sections of content.<p>This is some text before the line.</p> <hr> <p>This is some text after the line.</p>
5. Bold Text
To make text bold, you can use the <b> or <strong> tag. While both tags visually render text in bold, <strong> also indicates that the text is of strong importance.<p>This is <b>bold</b> text.</p> <p>This is <strong>strong</strong> text, which also has semantic importance.</p>
6. Italic Text
To italicize text, you can use the <i> or <em> tag. The <em> tag emphasizes the text semantically, meaning it can affect the way assistive technologies interpret the content.<p>This is <i>italicized</i> text.</p> <p>This is <em>emphasized</em> text.</p>
7. Underlined Text
To underline text, use the <u> tag. This is not as commonly used today due to styling being handled by CSS, but it's available in HTML.<p>This is <u>underlined</u> text.</p>
8. Superscript and Subscript
Superscript: The tag raises text slightly above the baseline, often used for exponents or footnotes.
Subscript: The tag lowers text slightly below the baseline, often used for chemical formulas.
<p>This is superscript: x2</p> <p>This is subscript: H2O</p>
9. Strikethrough Text
To strike through (cross out) text, use the <s> or <del> tag.<p>This is <s>strikethrough</s> text.</p> <p>This is <del>deleted</del> text, often indicating something that has been removed.</p>
10. Monospaced (Code) Text
To display text in a monospaced (fixed-width) font, typically used for code, use the <code> tag.<p>This is <code>inline code</code> within a paragraph.</p> <pre> <code> function example() { console.log('This is code'); } </code> </pre>
11. Small Text
The <small> tag decreases the font size of the text, often used for disclaimers or fine print.<p>This is normal text.</p> <p>This is <small>small</small> text.</p>
12. Marked Text
The <mark> tag highlights text with a yellow background, similar to using a highlighter.<p>This is <mark>highlighted</mark> text.</p>
13. Quotations
Inline Quotes: The <q> tag is used for short quotations and automatically adds quotation marks.
Block Quotes: The <blockquote> tag is used for longer quotes, usually indented.
<p>This is an inline quote: <q>To be or not to be, that is the question.</q></p> <blockquote> This is a block quote. It is usually used for longer quotations. </blockquote>

crappy fix for the dash layout(for windows) :
-Right click and hit inspect
-(Chrome) left click the ‘layout’ tab and find the ‘Flexbox overlays’. -In chrome, left click the dotted box to the right of where it says div.h_erh. In firefox, use the search HTML box and search div.h_erh
-delete the highlighted bit. in chrome you can just hit the del/delete button on your keyboard. In firefox you have to right click then left click ‘delete node’
The posts are now back where they belong :)
Q&A: Q:For those who disabled infinite scrolling, will clicking the ‘next’ button revert this? A: It should not. (tested on both chrome and firefox, but wouldn't be surprised if it did randomly revert) Q:How do I see new posts like this? A: left click the ‘for you’ or ‘your tags’ tabs then left click to go back to the ‘following tab’ Q:How do I make new posts or access the inbox/messages like this? A:You can’t. That’s why its a crappy fix and not a good fix. Q:How do I undo this ‘fix’? A: Hit F5 on your keyboard

@aranarumei they're usually Fine (except for lists, which always mess up if you have more lists nested inside lists); they're just kind of ugly and not always suited to ao3 depending on what styling you do
here you can see on the left is the raw html export, while on the right is what's been cleaned up. the raw has a lot of unnecessary <span> elements that don't really Do anything
...except when they do, which is usually when trying to do underlines or strikethroughs. in those cases, you'd usually want to use a <ins> or <del>, respectively, to make the lines show up, but while scrivener will correctly export italics and bold text with <em> and <strong> (and an extra <span> inside. for some reason.), it just includes a stylesheet at the head of the exported file that styles some <span> elements to look like <ins> or <del> elements instead.
it also has a similar issue with blockquotes, where it'll just have css styling rules to make certain paragraph elements Look like blockquotes, but then not actually reflect that in the html
(also on rare occasions, i just write html directly into the scrivener doc, like in this case when i wanted some <dfn> elements, so when scrivener exports that, it obviously changes the angle brackets out for the relevant escape codes so as to not accidentally produce bad html when someone wants to write smth like "2 > 3" in their doc or w/e, but i also included a couple lines of code in the sanitizer to revert (most) of those back to angle brackets bc i do intend to produce html with them)
anyway what i used to do when cleaning up scrivener exports by hand was i'd look at the style rules to figure out which classes needed manual editing, find+replace them with the right elements/attributes, but since this wouldn't catch the corresponding closing tags, i'd then have to hunt those down and fix them before i just deleted all <span> and </span> tags en masse. sometimes i'd miss closing tags and i'd have to dig through the entire file and compare it to what i'd written in scrivener to figure out where the respective closing tag was supposed to be lol.
nowadays with the sanitizer, pretty much all i have to do is check for long chains of empty paragraphs (intentional) so i can put them in divs for workskin purposes, and if smth's a flashback, then i change all the <em> italics into <i>, since i italicize flashback texts for aesthetic, rather than semantic, purposes, and i'd prefer the html to reflect that
i haven't gotten around to getting the sanitizer to fix html lists as exported by scrivener, but when exporting a list that looks like this:
the html output looks something like this:
where neither the first <ul> nor <li> here ever gets a closing tag, for some reason.
on one hand, going through what my html sanitizer spits out to manually add stuff like classes is really fucking tedious, esp. when working with flashbacks n i have to change some html elements around n then double-check to make sure i didn't break misnest anything
however, it's still a hell of a lot better than when i'd clean up scrivener html exports entirely by hand, so begrudgingly, i put up with it
#replies#aranarumei#tbh i fear that the lists are converted to html so atrociously that i may never get the sanitizer to truly fix it properly every time#but i've started picking away at the task so we'll see... we'll see#long post

HTML ins Tag
The HTML <ins> tag is used to define a newly inserted text in an HTML document. The web browser renders this inserted text as an underline and you can also change it through the text-decoration property of CSS. The <del> element defines the part of the text that has been deleted and <ins> defines the part of the text that has been inserted to the…

There are no theorems in category theory.
Emily Riehl, Category Theory In Context
Mathematicians often tell her this; hence the book.
If I had to summarise her views in one sentence, it would be:
Everything is an adjunction.
I also like the division these mathematicians are making to her: essentially, a theorem is anything that solves Feynman’s challenge: by a series of clear, unsurprising steps, one arrives at an unexpected conclusion.
Examples for me include:
17 possible tessellations
6 ways to foliate a surface
27 lines on a cubic
1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 28, 2, 8, 6, 992, 1, 3, 2, 16256, 2, 16, 16, 523264, 24, 8, 4 ways to link any-dimensional spheres.
the existence of sporadic groups
surprising rep-theory consequences of Young diagrams, Ferrers sequences, and so on (you could say the strangeness of integer partitions is really to blame here…)
59 icosahedra
8 geometric layouts
Books which are bristling with mathematical ideas of this kind include Montesinos on tessellations, Geometry and the Imagination (the original one), and Coxeter’s book on polyhedra (start with Baez on A-D-E if you want to follow my path). Moonshine and anything by Thurston or his students, I’ve found similarly flush with shockng content—quite different to what I thought mathematics would be like. (I had pictured something more like a formal logic book: row by row of symbols. But instead, the deeper I got into mathematics, the fewer the symbols and the more the surnames thanking the person who came up with some good idea.)
Note that a theorem is different here to some geometry — as in The Geometry of Schemes. The word geometry used in that sense, I feel, is to have a comprehensive enough vision of a subject to say how it “looks” — but the word theorem means the result is surprising or unintuitive.
This definition of a theorem, to me, presents a useful challenge to annoying pop-psychology that today lurks under the headings of Bayesianism, cognitive _______, behavioural econ/finance, and so on.
Following Buliga and Thurston to understand the nature of mathematical progress, within mathematics at least (where it’s clearer than elsewhere whether you understand something or not—compare to economic theory for example), there is a clear delination of what’s obvious and what’s not.
What is definitely not the case in mathematics, is that every logical or computable consequence of a set of definitions is computed and known immediately when the definitions are stated! You can look at a (particularly a good) mathematical exposition as walking you through the steps of which shifts in perspective you need to take to understand a conclusion. For example start with some group, then consider it as a topological object with a cohomology to get the centraliser. Or in Fourier analysis: re-present line-elements on a series of widening circles. Use hyperbolic geometry to learn about integers. Use stable commutator length (geometry) to learn about groups. Or read about Teichmüller stuff and mapping class groups because it’s the confluence of three rivers.
Sometimes mathematical explanations require fortitude (Gromov’s "energy") and sometimes a shift in perspective (Gromov’s (neg)"entropy").
This view of theorems should be contrasted to the disease of generalisation in mathematical culture. Citing two real-life grad students and a tenured professor in logic (one philosophical, one mathematical, the professor in computer science):
I like your distinction between hemi-toposes, demi-toposes, and semi-toposes
I care about hyper-reals, sur-reals, para-consistency, and so on
Abstract thought — like mathematicians do — is the best kind of thought.
(twitter.com/replicakill, the author of twitter.com/logicians, ragged on David Lewis by saying “What do mathematicians like?” “What do mathematicians think?” —— And Corey Mohler has done a wonderful job of mocking Platonism, which is how I guess the thirst for over-generalisation reaches non-mathematicians.)
Paul Halmos knew that cool examples beat generalisations for generalisation’s sake, as did V. I. Arnol’d. And it seems that the people a Harvard mathematician spends her time with make reasonable demands of a mathematical idea as well. It shouldn’t just contain previous theories; it should surprise. In Buliga’s Blake/Reynolds dispute, Blake wins hands down.

What?
I would far rather it stripped the decorative elements out and committed to styling being a separate, modular thing that is device-aware.
HTML did do this. That's why HTML5 was a breaking change.
HTML5 split the semantic and presentation layers.
(The only non-semantic elements left are <div> and <span>. If you wanted to get rid of those, you'd need to add a whole fourth language to webdev, which is obviously absurd.)
Everything else has an actual meaning. Even <p> has a meaning, "this is a paragraph of text", which is a concept that is important in most human languages. <b> has legacy bold styles for backwards compatibility, but also because generally speaking that's how you bring attention to text, and that's a different meaning from <strong>. When I'm hand-writing HTML, I use <em> and <i> both, because <i> is correct for book titles and <em> is appropriate for emphasis. <u> is different from <mark> and <ins>, and <strike> is different from <del>. And so on. <table> isn't a presentational element; it defines a data structure that can be styled however you want.
Device-awareness is all up to CSS3 (as most recently revised), and its media queries and container queries. You can turn a <table> from something with two scrolling dimensions into something with one scrolling dimension, using CSS.
It is very not hard to write:
<p class="poem">This is a poem. <br/> it is centered. </p>
<style> .poem {text-align: center;} </style> and then when you want to make al poems on the page use a fancy font, instead of adding twelve bajillion <font> elements, you just change the style tag:
<style> .poem {text-align: center; font-family: cursive;} </style>
Exactly!
To phrase it wrong but also kind of right: If I can do it in naive Microsoft Word,* - if all I want to do mark up my hypertext - I should be able to do it in pure HTML. I don't want to "style" my home page with "cascading sheets," I'm writing text here. Text that I want underlined and centered.
*(I'm aware Word Skill is a deep and subtle river)

{CODEMBER 2021} - Alice in Wonderland by Mystique’s Workshop

{Playlist & Post} - Levitating by Mystique’s Workshop
¡Holiis!

Just a tip 😚

Favorite Color: Lighter blues like #1d6ec4
Currently Reading:
• The New Topping Book by Dossie Easton and Janet Hardy. I recently started a new relationship with someone who expressed interest in being a submissive. I don't have much experience in this regard, so I am educating myself.
• Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir. As a lapsed Homestuck, astonishingly good.
Last Song: Handmade Cities by Plini. I do love a dreamy textured soundscape to stimulate my synesthesia.
Last Series: Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities, but only one episode because my buddies back home in Albuquerque wanted to watch it while I was visiting. I don't remember the last one I finished.
Last Movie: Barbie, which I saw with my mom to her delight and mine. Lots of fun!
Currently Working On: My resume as a website. It's currently just static HTML, and I want to add a task to the deploy process that will render the page using an EJS template and upload that, so I can decouple the page content from the styling.

Currently Reading: Treasure Island by Robert Luis Stevenson. For most of my life, I was mostly familiar with it through the 2002 Disney adaptation of the story, which was completely different from the original. Heck I didn't even know that it was an actual story until my mid-teens. So in combination of wanting to expand my media literacy and Dr. Livesey memes, I decided to bite the bullet and buy the book. So far, I've been pretty engaged with it. I had know no idea that it was told through Jim Hawkins's POV.
Last Song: Hajanga by Jacob Collier. About a year ago(?) I found this interesting Youtube channel that uploads videos of miscellaneous performances by musicians and puts a music sheet on the bottom to show the notes they're singing or playing. Also they put funny titles up to entice viewers. What I didn't know was that Jacob has a music career and I got the chance to listen to one of his songs. Highly recommend listening to the live MIT performance of Hajanga.
Last Series: King Of The Hill. I mainly put that on for background noise since I've seen it a hundred times. There are some other shows that I want to watch but I want to commit to it without any distractions.
Last Movie: Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One. While this is the 7th installment in the series, it's actually my 2nd viewing--last one being the first movie I rented from the library. So far my impressions is that this is a series full of twists and turns. You can never be so sure of who you can trust the first time around.
Currently Working On: Nothing concrete at the moment. I've mostly have ideas that are swarming around in my head that may or may not come to fruition. Last thing I ever uploaded to AO3 back in January was a Deltarune fanfic called Winter Wonderland (AKA What's Eating Noelle Holiday?), a sorta post Chapter 2 story were Noelle experiences a nightmare involving her missing/possibly dead sister and how she comes to grips with that with most of the Kris and Susie Darkworld stuff being in the background. I had original plans for a short story involving Dess and Asriel but that's scrapped as of right now. Also, I'm currently hyperfixated on Elemental and it's still very likely that some ideas I have for THAT may never come to life. Probably the most vicious cycle of any given writer.
I'll leave a link for the aforementioned story but be warned, I was mostly press for time trying to get that out so it may be not be my 100%. So if I ever go back and revise it, you'll know why. https://archiveofourown.org/works/44080062/chapters/110833800
