Short Prompt #129

It started as a light scratching noise far overhead, not unlike the familiar clawing of rodents burrowing amongst the roots of the old tree.

Scritch scratch, scritch scratch.

The vampire closed his eyes and let himself doze to the monotonous work. In his slumber, he imagined the little family; he wondered just how many babies were born this year. Probably a lot from the way that sound was growing.

It was much closer now and obviously nothing like the innocent scrape of little claws. This was something much bigger, prying at the earth with vehemence.

The next thing he knew, something metal narrowly avoided stabbing him right through the head, sending splinters and soil all across his face and lashes. The shovel slammed into the coffin's rotten bottom.

He blinked rapidly in the new stream of light peeking in at him. More a soft glow than the cruel blaze of the day.

The moon.

Before he could finish admiring its pale beauty, someone grabbed the great silver stake pinning him to the bottom of his coffin and wrenched with all their might. It tore from his chest with minimal blood spray and...and... Wow.

He could move again. He could breathe again.

The vampire groaned, squinting against the light for faces while simultaneously fighting to rise up onto his elbows after so many... What? Years? No matter. After such an extended period in his grave.

"It's really alive down there," one voice said in awe.

"Just help me get him out?" a second voice snapped, somewhat closer.

The vampire curled his overgrown nails, or claws really, into the soft coffin bottom, not even caring about the splinters under his nails. Impatiently waiting for the hole in the coffin lid to be broken a little bigger or maybe for one of these shadowed figures to get a little closer. In either scenario, he would soon be free.

What is your favorite creature from gothic literature?

Asking because I am making a gothic lesbian slice of life fic (for AO3) and I'm trying to figure out more creatures to gothic creatures to include.

So far I have vampires and humans (only finished chapter 1, it's a vampire/human fic), and I plan on including werewolves. Thinking about including sirens (the Greek mythology one, also known as mermaids) but not sure.
