Roxas: *nudges his sister*
Xion: *glances at her brother then turns to the rest of the Heart Hotel* "What does 'take out' mean?"
Sora: "Food."
Ven: "Dating."
Naminé: "Murder."
Vanitas: "It means all three if you're not a coward!!"
Sora, Ven, & Naminé: *turn their heads to give Vanitas an utterly unimpressed look*

Heart Stations (KH spec)
after realising how much Foreshadowing and Sneaky Plot Points were lurking about in KH3's "demo" section, i finally remembered that a LOT of KH3 is done in parallel with KH1: which means that ITS "demo" is ALSO subtly plotty!
The first thing I remembered about Sora's heart station in KH1 is it being able to connect DIRECTLY to the heart stations of Princesses.
despite Sora never having met these princesses before.
except... VENTUS has!
the heart stations that Sora visits in the first Heart Dive belong to Snow White, Cinderella & Aurora: the order of their stations is in the same order as Ven's meeting them in BBS. Ventus befriended Cinderella personally, becoming friendly enough with Snow White & Aurora to have [link] attacks based on them (mostly through his friendship to the dwarves & Aurora's non-evil fairy godmothers).
There is also, in KH1's tutorial, a heart station depicting the three "free" princesses: Alice, Jasmine & Kairi. I had forgotten about this one. It's... interesting that, despite SORA being best friends with Kairi, Sora's heart instead connects to the "idea" of these three princesses altogether rather than individually (if only in the background, given the lack of need for a player to have 7 stages in a tutorial rather than 5). Sora knows Kairi personally but only Ventus could have known Alice or Jasmine, even THEN, his meeting them would have been during KHUX (a time he does not remember in BBS but treasures enough to enable his reunion with Chirithy in KH3).
The last heart station Sora visits in KH1's tutorial heart dive is Belle's: Belle is the princess who Sora ultimately ends up reasonating with most, in his heart at least, and she notably takes on the role of "Riku" to Beast's "Sora" in CoM.
it is EXTREMELY odd that Sora, well before Riku's heart gave him Kingdom Key, was able to directly walk from his heart station to those of the Princesses of Heart: Ventus did not have this ability nor any personal connection with Kairi. There are two plausible explanations as to why Sora's heart was ALREADY connected to that of the Princesses, prior to personally meeting them: Ventus might have joined their hearts by his being an 'artificial' Princess of Light courtesy of Xehanort & Vanitas; RIKU was connected to the princesses and, when Riku gave his crown necklace to Sora, Sora inherited that connection.
Ventus: Artificial Princess of Heart?
this theory is technically canon, working with the definition of princesses as "beings whose hearts are made entirely of light". it seems unlikely that this technicality would result in a metaphysical stairway between Sora's heart station and those of the Prinxesses': if it was THAT easy, Xehanort would have noticed the connection while he had Ven all comatose. Ven's heart being sheltered in Sora's MIGHT, however, explain why the heart stations of Snow White & Cinderella & Aurora were so much closer than the other stations (though the Sleeper/Dreaming connection is a stronger factor shared by Sora & these three).
Riku as Kingmaker?
Sora's first keyblade, Kingdom Key, gets him specifically scouted as Special by Donald & Goofy: Kingdom Key has narrative significance to it, tying it to Kingdom Hearts. Kingdom Key was also, originally, an existence dormant in RIKU'S heart: when Riku['s heart] was consumed by darkness in KH1, Sora was able to reach the light within Riku and receive its protection.
the ease with which Sora inherited Riku's keyblade betrays A Lot about Riku's Heart but it ALSO hints that this is not the ONLY example of Riku's Heart being considered interchangeable with Sora's. in later games, Riku and Sora are able to wield each other's keyblades without hesitation and are even capable of merging: other than SoRiku & Sora's Heart Roommates, Aqua is the only instance of someone summoning & wielding another's keyblade.
The keyblade of a deceased Eraqus came to Aqua in her time of need: this makes sense, the keyblade of a teacher coming to protect its student. Eraqus taught Aqua how to call and use a keyblade; Eraqus [knighted] Aqua with this keyblade; Eraqus died with this keyblade, died realising that he had failed his students and that original duty of protecting them.
Sora, meanwhile, began wielding a keyblade because Riku's Heart knew Sora could use it when Riku could not.
So what makes Riku so special, to keyblades and Princesses of Heart specifically?
It seems increasingly likely that Riku is the "Child of Destiny" that Xehanort believed himself to be: Riku's resemblance to Ephemer makes it likely that, just like Xehanort, Riku is his descendant; additionally, the light of Riku's heart was strong enough to catch the attention of both Terra AND Aqua in BBS. Both Terra & Aqua had, by then, met three Princesses of Heart AND lived alongside the artificially-light Ventus: nevertheless, Terra and Aqua only note that Riku's light is "strong" but not in the same way as any heart they'd encountered before.
Riku also, just "incidentally", happens to have had a Crown since infancy (if we quote Sora in CoM but correctly attribute to Riku what he says of Naminé's charm)... that Riku GAVE to SORA, who now wears it as a necklace. A crown necklace that Sora subconsciously gestures to when speaking from "the heart". *insert Necklace Theory here*
so, even before receiving Kingdom Key, Sora had been given a kind of "kingdom's key" through Riku, in symbol & oath.
this leads me to conclude that the CROWN must have connected Sora's heart (which, in DDD, appears a hop skip & a jump away from Riku's) to the Seven Princesses of Heart, the Seven Lights.
which, in turn, leads me to believe that Riku's gift & oath to Sora was significant enough to be recognised as a form of "Coronation": Riku CROWNED Sora, even without knowing it, and did so while meaning it with "all his heart". Riku's Heart recognising & accepting Sora as its "[king?]" (partner? equivalent?) seems to have continued from that Fateful Meteor Shower, throughout Riku's Entire Villain Arc & Redemption, continuing past Sora's failing to exist: Riku has pulled at LEAST two True Love's Sacrifices for Sora, not counting repeats across timelines, just within DDD & KH3. Riku's sacrificing himself has never lasted long enough to learn any repurcussions beyond Sora.exe going offline. SORA'S nonexistence has not significantly affected the integrity of his universe at large, beyond Riku.exe presumably shortcircuiting, which leads me to believe that so long as ONE of the two has a heart where it should be, the potentially disaatrous ramifications of "oh, btw, this one kid's heart has direct access to our universe's suns? should we be worried about that" has been prevented.
(Riku launching himself OUT of said universe to follow Sora? UH. let's just hope Kairi's still in touch with the other Original 7 and can lead the New Lights when it potentially/inevitably becomes necessary?)
Speaking of Kairi...
interestingly, Kairi never really indicates feeling "connected" to Riku.
Kairi feels connected to SORA and HIS heart, something many characters share in common (often very literally). Another product of Riku (& thus Destiny) sharing his role with Sora, when not designating him [his] King absolutely?
Speaking of Kings...
Riku ends up manifesting ANOTHER keyblade, just casually, despite Sora's having Kingdom Key being a Big Deal.
we could dismiss Riku's having Soul Eater in KH1 as "that's Xehanort/Terra/Ansem SoD's heart at work"... but we can't dismiss Riku's STILL having a keyblade post-KH2, Sora wielding the original Kingdom Key while Riku so happens to summon a second keyblade from his heart without any fuss at all??
it is... interesting, that Donald & Goofy never ended up explaining [to the audience] why Kingdom Key SPECIFICALLY was something King Mickey was looking for in the first place.
if it was due to Mickey's searching for the Wayfinder Trio, Donald & Goofy would have been searching for multiple "keyblade WIELDERS" instead of one "KEYBLADE": we can only assume that Xehanort's repeated efforts at starting another ragnarok have sufficiently distracted everyone from Kingdom Key's origins.
I personally find it very heartwarming/plot-foreshadow-y that Kingdom Key has STAYED with Sora, even upon reuniting with a Riku whose heart is at peace again: consciously or otherwise, Riku's heart continues to choose "Sora".
(which, given how likely it is that Riku is the foretold Child of Destiny... means that RIKU'S choosing Sora makes DESTINY choose Sora... for better of for worse, right? plz just let them be married already, Disney: Nomura & Utada have Riku's vows all written and everything)

as much as i love talking abt ven i dont really have the energy to make a whole essay about connecting him to various disney movies but not enough ppl point towards the little mermaid/princess and the frog/hercules when talking abt him. ariel and naveen both made "deals with the devil", megara was used by hades, and meanwhile ventus made a wish to have friends as a child, and the monkey paw curled. ventus didn't even know what he was doing and that a "devil" had granted his wish, but suddenly he was a union leader with friends at the cost of someone else's life, and since then the universe has been punishing him, no matter how many good deeds he does or sacrifices he makes. and i feel like there's gotta be SOME parallel with a disney movie we can connect this too because this is just some twisted variation of ariel wanting legs and nearly getting her kingdom destroyed. there are so many ven parallels w/ disney princesses its insane, snow white and aurora were just the beginning
ventus is living through the most fucked up disney princess story. and the ride is not fucking over yet.

Terranort Speculation
It is known by know that when Birth By Sleep entered its earliest stages of conception and development (in 2006), Terra's story was thought out first (because Revenge of the Sith), followed by Ven's second and Aqua's last, explaining the recommended playing order. It's also shown in how in KHII FM, released in 2007, every single hook for BBS concerned Terra and his story - those horrendously misplaced scenes with Xemnas, Aqua's armor, Vexen, Zexion and Xigbar, the secret boss fight against Terra's Lingering Will, and the secret ending video where the climax is a close-up of Terra's face as his eyes morph into the "dark" golden eyes, or "Nort eyes." Then in 2008, early on at Jump Festa and later in at the Tokyo Game Show, the beta trailer footage for the former was only of Terra and Ventus while the latter added Aqua to the mix. And this was also the same time we got the 358/2 Days trailer and wow, between these teases and Coded starting up late into the year, 2008 truly was a year spent preparing the KH series for the plunge it was going to end up taking!
But I want to touch on all that early footage because it makes me speculate and believe that there was a slightly different plan set for Terra's story being developed at first, and that Terra himself was conecieved as a far darker character than what we ended up getting. Prior to contributions from Daisuke Watanabe and Masaru Oka, Nomura had every inclination to push as hard as possible with the "Anakin Skywalker" route for Terra, essentially taking what he had at first likely envisioned as being Xehanort's forgotten origin story and rewriting it with Terra in place of a younger Xehanort, making enough modifications to service the end point of Terra losing his heart and body to Master Xehanort, who'd lose his memory soon afterwards.
The thing about the beta trailers is that scenes that ended up occurring in the final product are played out in backdrops that were not intended to be the locations those scenes would actually play in (like, why's Xehanort confronting Ven at Olympus Coliseum? Why's Terra protecting Ven from Eraqus at the Great Maw? Why's Ven asking to be killed on Destiny Islands?) So while Terra's meeting with Maleficent was never meant to take place with thorns all around, what's really notable about how it's depicted here is...well, this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Maleficent clearly has a proposition for Terra, and Terra gives an evil Xemnas-y face in response. To me this suggests that in the initial plan, Terra at the start of the game was going to be like Riku was in the midsection of KH1: very easily allured by the power of Darkness and willing to dirty his hands while working with unsavory characters towards some goal he believed to be righteous and worth it for him.
Just as interesting, the second trailer has this next scene with Terra and Maleficent, as the latter exposits about the Princesses of Heart.
Tumblr media
Literally nothing is different from the final scene except Terra's body language. In the final version, his head is titled towards Maleficent. But in this initial version, his head is tilted towards Aurora. Later in that same trailer, the last scene played sets up Aqua and Maleficent's later interaction different. Rather than ask "what did Master Xehanort tell you?", Aqua (with no Prince Philip there yet) asks "was what you said to Ven a lie?" And then Maleficent answers her straight up:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And yes, Terra's embrace of darkness during his confusion and rage over Eraqus' strict, abusive teachings of the supremacy of light over darkness does happen in the game, but it's framed as him getting tricked into it and extracting Aurora's heart by mistake, which is then later backtracked with Xehanort indicating he'd set up Aurora's heart to be extracted, making him the true culprit. I think in the original pitch, Terra was going to deliberately embrace the darkness and turn his Keyblade on Aurora's heart. He'd immediately regret what he did when he sees Maleficent claim the heart, but it would have been a far more willful mistake, which is why he'd be racked with such guilt over having done it. For a moment, he'd have crossed the line and done something evil, which someone who values heroism and protection of others like him would find completely antithetical to himself.
So then rather than further self-damnation like Riku in KH1, we'd see Terra walking back from the abyss in the next worlds he visits, giving us hope that he may yet avoid succumbing to the darkness within himself. .... And then the events at the Radiant Garden would occur, to set him down a different, even more insidious road to darkness.
Some time well afterwards, after he's come to blows with his friends and is in conflict with his master's agenda concerning him, after he's once again channeled his darkness and taken out Braig's eye, after he's been talked up by Master Xehanort, stirring within him the craving to seek more power, achieve more heroic exploits using that power, and wanting to protect his friends while also prove his master wrong and assert himself as the decider of how the trio should conduct themselves as Keyblade Wielders, and after he's far more willingly indulged his darker nature by working with more villains he'd always be dead-set on backstabbing whenever it's convenient for him and his "noble" goals to do so, we'd be treated to this moment:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This plays much differently than anything we actually got from the stupid "Terra on Destiny Island" scene in the finalized game. To me, this is more like the also stupid first scene of the game with Young Xehanort, standing on the shore in contemplation as the bright sun sets over the horizon. Terra stands in solitude, away from the light, and when he sees the kids play-fighting on the beach, the sun is shining down and bathing them in light. Symbolism is clear; these are innocent hearts who belong to the light. Terra is no longer one such heart. He stands away from that brightness, away from light. This could've been the moment of realization from Terra that he needed to turn back from his darkness entirely, to head towards that light.
But alas. thanks to fucking Xehanort, this would follow instead:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This encapulates everything that Terra's character could've been. In the actual scene, the line is translated as "You may be my master... but I will not...let you hurt my friend!", to the response of "Has the darkness taken you too, Terra?" from Eraqus. But in the beta version, the wording suggests that the unseen Eraqus asks that question of Terra first, and Terra says "I don't care if you are my master! This power... I use it for my friends!" Conveying a full-on disowning of Eraqus as his master and a rejection of all that he'd taught him about light versus darkness, and an embrace of the power his darkness grants him to use for the sake of his friends. As in the final game, I think Xehanort would be the one to come in and kill Eraqus (gotta do the Mace Windu thing, after all), but in this version it would've been more clear that Terra was absolutely willing to kill his master here.
Beta Terra was meant to embody the absolute twisting of every positive value the KH Trinity showed us into a negative for him. "My friends are my power!" "My strength to become a True Hero comes from my friends!", "Our hearts are always connected", "No matter how deep the darkness, there's always a light at the end: keep your gaze towards that light even as you endure and exploit the powers of darkness from your own heart!" - Terra would showcase how you take those in the wrong direction, a callow young man ready and willing to try any measure, no matter how dark, in his pursuit of the "strength to protect what matters", his desire for self-actualization beyond what his master's expectations of him, and his committment to his more altruistic, heroic resolve (woah, major Alain flashbacks here!) We even see a carryover of this idea in Blank Points, where within Terra-Xehanort, Terra's heart tells Master Xehanort's heart that he's willing to get cast down into the deepest darkness and have his heart fully possessed by Xehanort so long as he feels certain that Xehanort will end up being the one to fade away into the darkness while Terra ends up returning to the light, and he does feel certain that this will be so for as long as he keeps sight of the cause he fights for: to return to his friends and make right what he'd helped set wrong, his heroic willpower embodied by that sentient armor spirit he'd left behind. But the follow-through on that is barely existent.
And the result is a man torn between himself: the man with the unbreakable will that desires to do good for the worlds and people he cares for (pure Terra, the Lingering Will), and the man who recklessly and selfishly embraces the heart's darkness for self-empowerment (Terranort, who'd later become a Heartless and create his own Nobody in doing so). By picking Terra to become his vessel, Master Xehanort would've basically ended up getting swept up in Terra's wild ride, as by becoming Terranort, he too became a fractured person, split into Ansem and Xemnas. Terranort was to be the ultimate villain because the "Terra" mattered as critically as the "Xehanort".
Tl:dr: I really like Terra, but at some point in his story's development he could've and should've been far more than a big dumb-dumb!

Someone to Watch Out for You: Chapter 19
The Ember of Hope
Summary: In which Ventus and Sabrina briefly have a child, and it’s Sora. Word Count: 2,496 First | Previous | Next ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆
"Watch your step, Snow White." Ven said as he carefully guided her out of the capsule. "The gap is a bit further down than it looks."
"Oh, thank you." Snow White cheerfully agreed. Once she was safely on the ground, she gave him an even brighter smile. "I told you you'd come to wake us. Did I not?"
"You did." he sheepishly agreed as he rubbed the back of his neck. "I'm sorry for doubting you."
The kind princess offered him yet another genuine smile. Ven couldn’t help but return it. With her safely on firm ground again, Ven took a look around the chapel. The other Princesses of Heart, sans Kairi, were all conversing with each other. The knight looked on in an almost awe- if not for the multiple cultures that were surely meeting for the first time, then in how much warmth you could feel when all the Princesses were together. It was like a glow that couldn’t be seen to the normal eye. Of anything, it reminded Ven of each time he looked at the stars- at the feeling of being safe and warm in a heart that cared.
“Pardon me,” Alice said as she gave Ven a gentle tap, bringing him from his thoughts, “But was there not another one of you armored fellows? Where ever did they go?”
“Oh! Sabrina’s still here.” he told her. “She was attacked by Ansem earlier and now she’s in the library resting. I should probably go check on her…”
“Do you mind if I come with you?” Belle inquired as she also came over. “I’m sorry for intruding, but I couldn’t help but overhear. If you are going to visit a library, I want to see if there is anything about darkness. Particularly in how it spreads. It might be able to help keep the Heartless at bay in this world a bit longer.”
“I don’t see why not.” he immediately agreed. After taking some room to think about it, his gaze then went to the keyhole. “But if I leave…”
“We can hold back the Heartless from coming through the keyhole.” Snow White told him, already knowing his fear.
“The larger ones, at least.” Belle gently countered
“Besides, two Keyblade masters are better than one.” Alice chimed in as well with a wide smile.
Ven looked at them, then drew his attention to the other three. They were looking over as well. Jasmine, Cinderella, and Aurora looked ready for any change of plan that may have been needed. He could almost feel their hearts resonate just a smidge brighter. Then he wondered what would have happened if he wasn’t here to help get rid of the straggler Heartless that came through the keyhole.
“Alright.” he finally agreed. “I’ll be back as soon as possible. I promise it, your highnesses.”
“We eagerly await your return.” Snow White told him. Alice gave a firm nod as well. It allowed Ven to have the encouragement to continue forward, making sure Belle was close beside him as they traveled back to the library.
Ven was not at all surprised to find that Sabrina was no longer resting. Instead, the princess of Wasteland was looking over some documents she had found and was going through them at an ornate oak desk. Standing, of course, as she did so. She had yet to reequip her Keyblade armor again.
“You should probably still be resting.” Ven gently chastised her as he and Belle approached.
Sabrina immediately let out a snort.
“I’ve had worse injuries falling off parade floats.” she informed him without so much a glance. “Just hope that kid isn’t a big apologizer like you are when he comes back to his senses.”
“If he is able to regain his heart after Ansem’s hold, he would indeed have much to answer for.” Belle solemnly agreed. The new voice was what made Sabrina pause. She looked up at the Princess and wanted very hard to snarl at her.
“This is Belle.” Ven explained to her. “She’s one of the Princesses of Heart. She wanted to visit the library with me to see if there might be a way to hold back the Heartless.”
This made enough sense to Sabrina. Letting out a bemused scoff, she then asked, “So now you’re playing escort to a princess and Shadow? You never cease to fascinate me.”
“Wait,” Ven realized, “What did you just say about a shadow?”
Sabrina tilted her head at him.
"Do you not know you have a Heartless following you?"
"Huh?"
Wildly looking around him, there, sure enough, was a small Shadow Heartless that sat at the top of the second floor steps. It simply stared at the trio. Its body twitching in its own darkness; almost like it itched to move forward but refused to let itself do so.
“Did you know it was there?” Ven asked Belle. He certainly hadn’t noticed the thing until now.
“I did,” she agreed, “It had been present in the chapel when we all woke. As it wasn’t attacking anyone, none of us really thought much of it.”
“Huh.” Sabrina mused as she left her spot at the desk. She got as close to the Shadow as she could without it touching her, or it trying to move away.
“Sabrina…” Ven said in low warning. It wouldn’t take much for the thing to scratch her- perhaps even overwhelm her if it was clever enough.
“Quit your worrying, Papa. This won’t take long.” she shot back at him, not even noticing she had referred to him by the nickname she usually gave Oswald. It still drove a certain point home regardless.
Experimenting now, Sabrina brought her hand out for the Shadow to inspect. It leaned forward in observation. Moving her hand around to make sure the Shadow would follow the movement, and it did, Sabrina took a rather generous step backward as she kept her hand outstretched.
“Jump for it,” she challenged the Heartless.
The creature looked up at her. Its head tilting a bit to the side. Eventually it took a step backward, as if refusing the suggestion.
“You chicken?” Sabrina then taunted.
That sent the Shadow into a mini frenzy. It leapt at her with a certain kind of determination. Before Ven could worriedly call her name, or even help (Belle, too, was certainly surprised by the sudden leap), Sabrina had caught the Shadow by the arm. Standing again, she held it out in front of her like a wet laundry bag that still smelled rancid.
She turned to Belle and Ven to tell them, “This is the kid that was traveling with Donald and Goofy.” before turning her attention back to the creature. She gave it a cold glare as she said, “I told you that if you kept blindly following your heart, you’d get hurt.”
The Shadow shamefully shrunk a little.
“Wait, that’s Sora?” Ven asked, just to confirm. “But how?”
“It must have happened when he used the Keyblade of hearts.” Belle suggested. “That Heartless is all that remains of him.”
“What do you want to do with it?” Sabrina asked as she swung that Shadow around for Ven to better see. It moved similar to a ragdoll. The creature remained limp as she held its arm tightly.
“What makes you think I know what to do?” Ven immediately retorted- almost offended at the notion.
“It followed you,” came the firm answer. “Surely that must mean you can do something to help it.”
“Sabrina,” Ven huffed, despite moving closer to the Shadow, “We are well aware by now that my levels of observation are purely abysmal. Unless I can get a psychic link with this thing, I doubt we can do much of anything.”
Sabrina scoffed in return. A certain inflection indicating that she had actually found it pretty amusing. Ven grinned at her before he got down to roughly eye level with the Shadow. Still in Sabrina’s grasp, it craned its head slightly to look at Ven. Its yellow eyes staring at him, unblinking and without a flinch.
“Sora,” Ven mused as he started to move his hand, “Not so long ago, you gave my heart a place of refuge when it was broken. But I don’t know if I can do the same now. I’m sorry. I just don’t know what to do.”
The Shadow bowed its head again just moments before Ven placed his hand on top of its head. The contact of the touch sent an immediate jolt to the core of Ven’s being.
‘Light… Can’t… find the light…’
Ven jumped away from the Shadow in shock.
“Kairi!” he declared in equal surprise. “He’s trying to find Kairi!”
“Are they still in Hollow Bastion?” Belle asked.
“I don’t know, but I’m going to find them anyway.” Ven decided. He gestured for Sabrina to pass the Shadow to him, and she did so without a second thought. The creature was a lot lighter than he thought it would be.
“Sabrina,” the knight then instructed once the Shadow was secure in his arms, “You should head back to the chapel to watch over the other Princesses of Heart.”
“Right.” she agreed with a nod.
“And Belle…”
“I wish to stay here.” the princess told him. “Beast will come for me soon, and he will protect me if any other Heartless come through.”
“Alright.” Ven agreed. “Good luck.”
And with that, he left the library in pursuit of Kairi, Donald, and Goofy.
. . .
The trio had barely made it back to the entrance hall by the time Ven caught up to them. With the Heartless growing in force as the keyhole remained open, and without a Keyblade wielder to properly put them in their place, Donald and Goofy were using their abilities to only delay the worst of the hoards. Kairi was not given time to find a stick or something to defend herself, and so she stuck close to the duo, rather unafraid of if they could make it out in time. Her heart told her they would make it. Just like it told her that Sora was still out there.
Sora immediately jumped out of Ven’s arms once he saw Kairi. The little Shadow barely looked behind him as Ven let out a surprised ‘hey!’ that caught the other three’s attention.
“A Heartless is after us!” Goofy hollered as the Shadow came at them.
“I’ll take care of him!” Donald declared, readying his staff.
“Wait!” Ven shouted as he rushed down the staircase. “Don’t hurt it, it’s Sora!”
Donald, who was about to whack the Heartless with his staff, stopped.
“Sora?” the duck questioned. “How would you know that?”
Knowing that it wasn’t going to be an easy explanation, all Ven had to defend himself was to sheepishly rub the back of his neck.
But the idea had inspired something in Kairi. She moved closer to the docile Heartless and looked it over.
“Sora?” she quietly asked. “Is it you?”
If the Heartless had anything to say for itself, it wasn’t given the chance. A swarm of Heartless surrounded the group. Ven, Donald, and Goofy immediately drew their weapons at the ready. Kairi used her whole body to protect the Shadow of Sora.
“This time, I’ll protect you.” she vowed to the small creature. It moved a bit closer to her, as if knowing this would be the case.
Meanwhile, as they prevented the Heartless from getting too close to Kairi, Ven was getting an earful from Goofy and Donald.
“Did ya seal the keyhole?” Goofy asked. He used his shield to force a Heartless into the air, and flung it Ven’s way.
“Well, no…” the knight admitted, cutting the Heartless in half mere inches from his face.
“Then why are you still here?!” Donald demanded with a stomp of his foot.
Ven stood a bit straighter, almost offended by Donald’s outburst.
“My mission was to find and protect the Princesses of Heart. Since they are all here, it is now my duty to watch them. Which means it has to be someone else’s fate to seal the keyhole.”
“Oh yeah?” the duck squawked. “Who?”
For this Ven paused. He looked over to Kairi and the Shadow. Before he could give his thoughts, the two were surrounded by Heartless. There wasn’t enough time to react before they leapt at Kairi and the docile Heartless. The girl gave  a shout, doing as she promised and protected the Shadow with her whole body.
What happened next only occurred because of her pure heart.
From beneath the Heartless was the smallest emergence of a bright light. The light soon burst forward, destroying the Heartless, and in its place was a reformed Sora holding onto Kairi.
“Kairi,” Sora quietly said, holding her tighter for a moment more, “Thank you.”
The only thing that broke their embrace was Ven gently placing his hand on Sora’s shoulder. The young wielder looked over at the older, armored one. He still kept a hand tightly wrapped in one of Kairi’s.
“I still don’t know who you are.” Sora reminded him; almost as a joke if that small hint of a smile was any indication.
“When we meet again after the worlds are back, I’ll explain everything.” Ventus smiled right back. “For now, take Kairi somewhere safe. When you are ready, come back to close the keyhole here, and go confront the darkness. You are our ember of hope. We all believe in you and the light you cast."
Sora gave him a wide, beaming grin.
Another wave of Heartless started to creep toward the group, making it apparent that now was the time to move it or lose it. The Beast also aided in the fight to get the misfit group back to their Gummi Ship. Ven didn’t go back to the chapel until he saw the ship leave the world.
“Well?” Sabrina asked as he returned. She had noticed him immediately, apparently trying to get away from the princesses. They were all talking with her before that, and the knight wasn’t going to dare consider what it could have been about. At least she was wearing her armor again.
Ventus had never before wanted to hug her so badly. Everything was moving a bit too quickly for anyone to properly understand what was going on. He did his best to explain what had transpired since the library. Sabrina seemed to take it all in stride.
“Now what?” she asked, placing a hand at her hip.
Ven took a deep breath in, and slowly exhaled. He looked around the chapel at the remaining Princesses of Heart. They were anxious, but their lights were strong. For a fleeting moment Ven wished he hadn’t told Sora to take his time. In the same line of thought, he couldn’t imagine what it must be like to lose your heart, regain it, and then try to keep going right after.
“Now,” Ven finally decided, “We wait.”

Writing Bingo: Woke Up Next to Each Other
Kingdom Hearts. In which Ventus and Sabrina have a light conversation after sharing a bed (platonic) together. Full story under the Read More cut. 1,083 words.
Feel free to send an empty square as a prompt through my ask here: link
Tumblr media
For a moment, Ven didn’t know where he was. When he had enough energy to open his eyes, his heart skipped a beat before a soft smile crossed his lips. He was in Sabrina’s bed, with Sabrina not too far from him as she continued to sleep. It was rare to see her so naturally relaxed.
‘I can’t believe I thought Aurora was the most beautiful person I’d ever seen.’ Ven mused to himself. ‘She is, of course, but Sabrina’s just so...’
A longing sigh escaped his lips. Without conscious thought, he moved his hand to sit in hers. He even absently started to run his thumb over the back of her hand. It wasn’t a very comfortable position, but he didn’t care. Ventus was a lucky guy. He wanted to take in this moment -this side of Sabrina barely anyone (if anyone) saw- before it inevitably ended.
And it was going to end very soon, apparently.
Sabrina whined as she started to stir. Her hand closed in around Ven’s a bit tighter as she opened her eyes. When Sabrina finally opened her eyes, she blinked multiple times to get the blurriness out. Only then did she realize Ven was still right next to her.
Sabrina did not waste any time to make a face of disgust. She then groaned as she turned her body over (her hand leaving Ven’s in a rather smooth motion), and tried to pull her blankets over her head. It didn’t go very far since Ven was laying on top of them- a condition that was made the night before. She still tried tugging anyway.
“Get off my blankets,” she slurred, “I’m trying to ignore you.”
“That won’t stop me from staring.”
“Creeper.”
“Lazy bum.”
Sabrina still tried to tug her blankets from under him. It was still fruitless. Giving up, Sabrina shifted her body around again to face Ventus. Her eyes looked him over with scrutiny before finally let out a sigh of defeat.
“When are you getting up?” she questioned with a pained expression.
“When are you?” he asked back.
Another displeased face. Ven smiled. After that, they simply looked at each other. It was… calming. Nothing else mattered at the moment.
Ven wiggled around a bit to get more comfortable before admitting, “I like this.”
“I’ve woken up to worse.” Sabrina claimed with a half shrug.
“So I’m not the worst?”
“Don’t make me repeat myself.”
Ven’s grin only got wider. For a brief moment, the corner of Sabrina’s lips also quirked into a facsimile of the tiniest of smiles.
‘I never want to leave this bed.’
“I know I keep talking when you want me to shut up,” Ventus said. “But since it’s just us right now, can I ask you a question?”
“Fire away.” Sabrina permitted.
“Why is your room so… impersonal?”
Sabrina’s nose immediately scrunched up. “It’s not ‘impersonal’, it’s organized.”
“I get that,” Ven quickly said, trying to defend himself. “But you don’t have anything to show what you like. Your writing desk is always clean, so that doesn’t count. The only flowers you have are in the window box, and I know you didn’t pick those out. There’s not even a nice picture on your nightstand- not of Wasteland, not of Oswald, not even of me.”
“Of you?”
“Y-you know what I mean. I hope...”
Sabrina’s rather bemused expression did not help in the slightest. She moved her body so she was laying flat on her back.
“There’s pieces of me in this room,” she then told him, “You just have to look for them.”
Ven raised an eyebrow, then moved his body so he was also looking up at her ceiling. There he saw something that had to do with what she was talking about.
“Your canopy curtains are lilac- a color you like.”
“Yep.”
Without sitting up, Ven continued to look around Sabrina room. His eyes fell to her writing desk.
“Your inkwell is empty, but you have a bottle of ink right next to it. It’s…” (he had to squint a bit to better see the bottle) “It’s that shimmery ink Ortensia buys for you because you use it a lot.”
“Hm-mm.”
Next, Ven noted that Sabrina had her door closed. He didn’t think it was that much of a surprise- it usually was closed anyway. The thing he noticed about it was the tapestry that hung there. Handwoven with frayed edges, Ven was sure he had seen it before but was only now realized it was there.
“That tapestry on your door… Is it of the statue in the Angel Caverns?”
“Naturally. Oswald commissioned the Haberdasher to make it in celebration of my first parade. It was a pretty big deal.”
Ven nodded in understanding. He was starting to see the little pieces now. Subtle but obvious- a bit like Sabrina herself.
Sabrina, meanwhile, tilted her head up a bit. There was something he wasn’t seeing yet. It was making her antsy.
“There’s also a piece of you in here, you know.”
Ven looked at her. “Don’t say it’s me actually being here.”
“You wish, you hopeless moron.”
Ven laughed, taking one more closer look around her room from the bed. He was sure at this point he was able to pick out everything. But then he took a look at the mannequin Sabrina used to test new outfits on. On it was a rather nice dress; a silky knee length number with hand applied rhinestones. It was with a jolt that Ven realized he knew the last time it had been worn.
“The mannequin. It has on that dress you wore when we-!”
“You know it.”
Ven looked over at Sabrina with widened eyes. She looked back at him with a cheeky smirk.
“I really like you, Sabrina.” Ven admitted without so much a thought to it.
“A little dumb to assume otherwise, really.” she mused with a snort. She went silent for a moment before adding, “Your influence is… hard to ignore. Often. Usually when I’m trying to focus on something else. It’s as annoying as you are.”
Ven grinned. He scooted a bit closer to her to give her upper arm a polite little peck. Sabrina shrunk a bit at the gesture. Only Ventus would be able to see her vulnerability, and he loved every moment of it.
“Does this mean I can sleep under the covers with you next time?”
The response came in way of a pillow whack to the face.

About your KH and TWST post!!
Isn’t it interesting how Silver and Ventus are similar in a way…?? Both from a broken era and both sleepy. The two are both pure of heart and incredibly sweet, though Ventus is still but a little boy, he does share the same almost knightly energy Silver has. Like Silver, Ven has been seen to be emotional- in BBS there’s a small clip of when he was scolded by Terra and started crying.
Ntm Ven flat out called Aurora beautiful and seems to have a thing for Sleeping Beauty~
Sometimes I feel like Silver and Ven share some sort of connection…
Good points, I didn't even realize just how similar those two are!
The fact that they also went through a sleep coma for long periods of time (though Silver slept for 400 years instead of 10) and their connection with dreams (Chirithy and his role in DDD in Ven's case).
Maybe they'll meet each other in a dream in a future crossover? The fact that Riku (a.k.a. Silver's carbin copy) is a dream eater may be a foreshadow of sorts...
Ven and Silver even have a conflict with their older brother figures with flower or nature powers (Lauriam and Malleus).
Hopefully we'll get answers soon enough, Yana and Nomura working together would be fun (if not confusing for theorists).
Thanks for the ask! Love your ideas!

Can’t wait for KH MoM!
PLEASE DO NOT REPOST, EDIT, OR USE THIS PICTURE WITHOUT MY PERMISSION. ARTISTS WORK HARD ON THEIR DRAWINGS. WE DO NOT LIKE IT WHEN OUR WORK GETS STOLEN LIKE THIS. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS ASK FIRST. THAT’S LITERALLY IT.
With that said, I 500% made that watermark as obnoxious as possible. If you want the clean version, you literally just have to ask lmao

Hey Hey I'm back to ask you something about the cutest handsome Ven-Ven. Does Ven have a girlfriend? Also could you tell Ven-Ven I love him so much!
XDD hullo~welcome back~always nice to see ya
Tumblr media
Ven has a baby crush on Aurora, but no girlfriend XDDD Big Sleeping Beauty fan boy. He thinks she’s so pretty and they saw her at Disney Island once. He’s the protective baby brother type. Don’t be rude, let her have Prince Philip in peace, etc. People think it’s Snow White that’s his favorite, but no, that’s just the Disney princess he’s openly a fan of. Sleeping Beauty is the one he gets shy about, but looooves.
He’s not really into anyone other than fan crushes though. XDD Partly because there’s no one I really ship him with, all the main girls are paired with others for this. But also because in this AU he only has 3 years of memory, and that first year is pretty shoddy broken |D He’s not mentally or emotionally ready for a relationship yet, gotta be a person and figure himself out first.
I’m sure he loves all the love from the fans though XDDD And the others tease him a little that he’s Sleeping Beauty in prince form. Just waiting for his princess XD

Due to Aurora teaching us third tier fire magic, being a princess of heart, and us not seeing her when actually confronted with an enemy, I must conclude that she is the Roy Mustang of the Kingdom Hearts universe. The only reason Xehanort’s plan had a chance was because she was blissfully unaware of it, and was in no position to set his ass on fire with holy flames of rightousness. In this essay I will-

@venquaweek Day6:Fairy Tale
Aqua:*reading*
Terra:*opens door* Hey~ Aqua…
Aqua:Hey Terra. You and Ven are back already?
Terra:Well…I’m back.
Aqua:…*closes book* What?
Terra:So don’t overreact…
Aqua:What did you two do?
Terra:…
Aqua:!?!? What did you do!?
[Enchanted Dominion, early]
Terra:……You think this spindle is still cursed?
Ventus:Do curse items stop?
Terra:I don’t know.
………
Terra:You should prick your finger.
Ventus:Me!?
Terra:I mean if anyone is going to be immune to sleep, and that’s if it works.
Ventus:Well when you put it that way. Like what are the chances the magic works on outsiders anyways?
Terra:Exactly!
xxxx
Aqua gave Terra and the three fairies a cold stare of disappointment in Aurora’s room, her bed occupied by a sleeping Ventus.
Aqua:So did you forget Maleficent’s magic worked on you!?
Terra:In my defense, I wasn’t aware she was the one who enchanted the spindle.
Aqua:That’s not a good defense!
Terra:Yeah? Yeah…my fault.
Aqua:Why isn’t that thing broken!? It’s ancient at this point.
Flora:Hard to break enchanted items such as these. It’s no longer regular wood.
Fauna:We didn’t tell them to snoop around!
Merryweather:Yeah!
Aqua:*squints*
Fairies:We’re terribly sorry!
Aqua:Sigh…guess what’s done is done, even if it could’ve been avoided. Can’t you three break the spell?
Fauna:That’s why you’re here!
Flora:Deary, don’t you remember? A curse like this can only be broken one way. True love’s kiss.
Aqua:*red*……This is why you were okay with him testing it, weren’t you?
Terra:Untrue! I didn’t think anything would happen. I mean why would they it out if it was dangerous?
Fairies:Because no one walks around the castle looking to prick their finger!
Merryweather:The room was even locked!
Terra:Heh “locked”
Aqua:Terra, kiss him.
Terra:What!?
Aqua:You two truly love each other like brothers. Help him out.
Terra:That’s not how this works.
Aqua:Says who? Are you saying you wouldn’t kiss him to save his life? *pulls out Gummi Phone* Try it just once.
Terra:I…but…who knows the concequence of getting it wrong? I could fall asleep.
Flora:That is true. We’ve never known what happens if the wrong person tries, but Terra has informed us of you and Ventus’s connection. I could tell by the way you ran in here that you must be the right person!
Aqua:Have you been telling people!?
Terra:Was it a secret? You two are fools for each other. Anyways, let’s not play around and end up with two sleeping people.
Aqua:Worse case scenario I end up waking you both up.
Terra:Nah, you wouldn’t work.
Aqua:……
Aqua:Do you actually have a person you’re in lo-
Terra:I’ll never tell.
Ventus:Zzzzzz
Aqua looks at Ventus. At this point it shouldn’t be surprised how peaceful he looks sleeping. Honestly, how could he put himself back in this situation!? Aqua stood motionless over him. She turned looked over her shoulder at the captive audience. Her blush grew.
Aqua:Could you please leave the room at least!
Merryweather:Aw but I’m invested!
Fauna:Theses moments are always magical.
Flora:Are you nervous?
Terra:If I know Aqua, she’s excited but having overthinking intrusive thoughts like if it actually won’t wor-
He watches Aqua squint at him. Wisps of darkness faintly rise and her eyes flash yellow. Terra let’s out a nervous laugh before scooping up the fairies in his arms and leaving the room. Teasing time was over.
Aqua calmed down. She wasn’t actually angry, just anxious more than anything.Terra may have been right though. This would suck if it didn’t work. Fortunately she knew her feelings, and Ven was never the kind of person capable of hiding his. Aqua couldn’t help but laugh at herself. She was overthinking. Aqua sat next to Ventus and brushed the hair out of his face. Gently she bent down and pressed her lips against his for a few seconds before pulling away. Ven’s eyes gradually opened as if he was dreaming.
Ventus:Mmmmgh! That was a nap! Hey Aq- oh you are upset.
Aqua:Obviously! Are you trying to sleep forever!? *grabs face*
Ventus:*smile* No, I knew things were safe. This was literally the worst case scenario.
Aqua:And if my kiss didn’t wake you up?
Ventus:It would. You wouldn’t lie about loving me.
Aqua:Still. I figured you’d hate taking the risk.
Ventus:Sleeping isn’t so bad. Both times I’ve woken up to see you waiting for me.
Why!? Why was he like this, so honest and aware of what to say!? Aqua felt his hands on top of hers as she held his face. She wanted to properly give him a lecture yet her blush and a swell of joy was written all over her face. Ventus gave her a cheeky grin and she found herself giving up on trying to be upset, kissing him again. Honestly, what’s up with boys!? Can’t leave well enough alone, this one especially; yet she loved him for it.
Ventus noticed the door and broke the kiss. Both of them looked to see that they have been caught red handed by Terra and the fairies who sneakily cracked the door open.
Aqua:I said privacy!
Terra:See? I knew everything was fine.
Aqua:You are so lucky I wouldn’t actually risk you falling asleep. Tell me who you love!
Terra:I am a man of mystery.
Ventus:It’s Cinderella.
Terra:Traitor!!!
