i hope this isnt very out of the blue—it’s just that these two have been rotating in my head for days (though tbh when have they stopped but anw), in your opinions, how do you think bruce and dick’s relationship can be healthy(ier)? like, ignoring the whole “the nature of comic demands them to always be unhealthy for conflicts/dramas’ sake”, (how) do you think they can move forward from all the bad things that have happened between them (especially if one counts spyral into it)?

i am also constantly rotating them and throwing them into rat mazes! endlessly entertaining.

my answer to this question is actually my ongoing series earth-w1 or: It's all part of the fairy tale. (see what I did there?) it's my fix-it AU set a year(?) after Spyral where Bruce and Dick get together. their relationship is very much a work in progress and messy but they are trying their best! hopefully I'll get the time to write the whole character arcs I have in mind for them.

so if we're talking comics Bruce and Dick? and we're not cherry picking the worst moments and dysfunction out? whether platonic, familial, or romantic, their relationship is deeply codependent. they need to grow as individuals before their relationship can be healthy.

they're great at ignoring their past conflicts and forgiving each other (without communicating that), because they always come back to nearly unconditional trust and love for each other. they don't need to open up old wounds between them, but they should. this is how comics deal with their issues—sweeping them under the rug, *maybe* with a few panels of communication where Bruce indirectly apologizes and Dick dismisses his need to apologize.

that's not actually good in the long run, and gives us situations like Dick coming back from Spyral with a cheery "family is everything!" smile, a character dissonance that *I* explain by Dick's desperate "Im okay" maladaptive coping mechanism.

anyway.

this is how to improve their relationship on the surface:

1. they realize that they both want each other around, and then actually spend lots of time together.

2. Dick helps call Bruce out on bullshit and helps improve his relationships. Dick soothes Bruce's emotional dysfunction by being a constant of unconditional love.

3. Bruce reassures Dick of his place in his life and the family, soothing Dick's anxiety about belonging.

4. the foundations of dysfunction in their relationship remain, so as soon as there's a crisis they fall into the same patterns as before, causing strain in their other relationships. Bruce can't be out of control or have Dick nearly-die without losing it. Dick drops everything to emotionally rescue him. Dick doesn't allow others to care for him.

this is how to improve their relationship deeply:

1. Bruce becomes brave enough to let Dick in past his armor, and shares and processes his childhood trauma. he recontextualizes what Batman is.

2. Dick accepts that he is worthy of love himself, and allows himself to be imperfect.

3. they actually spend time together.

4. Bruce makes a genuine effort to make amends for his past actions, regardless of the outcome. most importantly, Jason, whose death fundamentally changed Bruce. I dont think Jason needs to forgive Bruce or even give him the time of day, but Bruce must try and *not punish anyone if it doesnt go how he wants*.

probably the way to do this is to give both Bruce and Dick serious mental breakdowns. and maybe semi-retire them. I imagine them mellowing out a lot more when they're older and retired from vigilantism.

you can make their relationship and characters more, or less, fucked up but I believe the recipe still stands because Bruce's protective control and Dick's perfectionist caregiving are core dysfunctions for their characters.

Yes! Unless you're an absolute arsehole, and even then, I would rather reply (but only if I can come up with an appropriate retort). Why? Because I love the interaction. Getting a comment, no matter how small, will always make my day. So, it feels right to at least say thanks. Also, I met one of my now good friends through us chatting in our fics' comments. So who knows what might come of it.

I've not written the ending yet, but it's going to be How Did We Get Here? If only because I have become waaayyy too attached to all of the characters to give them anything but.

It's not quite hate, and I know it could be worse, but How Did we get here? garners some pretty strong reactions. They're a downer.

I've only published very mild smut, but I have written more explicit stuff since, and some of it is in the next chapter I'm publishing, and I'm scared.

Yes! Three actually. Idle in Kangaroo Court W1, for the mixed up writer fest. We ran out of steam, so it's unfinished, but I keep promising myself I'm going to finish it one day. Then two more with some friends, one short one for the rare pairs fest, that will be revealed soonish. Then one long fic that 3 of us a writing, which is err... in progress.

Call me a basic bitch, but I will always be such a sucker for Dramione.

What's a WIP you want to finish but don't think you ever will?

I have a really unhealthy stubborn streak that won't let me leave things unfinished, so hopefully none. Though Idle in Kangaroo Court is most at risk, because its been so long (and I feel I have to reach out to my co-author to check they don't mind, and my social anxiety is one of the few things that trumps my stubbornness).

What are your writing strengths?

Dialogue. I keep thinking I should try writing something as a script.

What are your writing weaknesses?

Descriptions and flowery language. I have to work hard at imagining visuals, so a lot of the time I don't. And I'm too literal to do well with metaphors.

Thoughts in writing dialogue in another language?

I've never really had any before. I guess I don't mind it in small amounts, if the meaning can be inferred from context or reactions. It's annoying if you miss something by not understanding what it means.

Week 01 - What are some notable ideas from today’s session?

I think that phenomenology is a study of the world around us and how we all individually and collectively experience it. This is applied to what we did in class when we were given two words and were told to create our own interpretations. I specifically chose the preciousness of time in school as my interpretation because my reality since I was born has mostly consisted of school. At that time, I also wondered if there were other people who would’ve resonated with my same interpretation but maybe for a different reason. I also thought that for the people who didn’t resonate with my reason, maybe they were more likely to focus on things outside of school.

We all definitely have different realities and consciousness because the things that affect it like our race, religion, and socio-economic statuses will make our lives incomparable. These things that will unconsciously teach us to identify success, beauty, truth, goodness, and righteousness. We can only use this as an advantage when we are aware of what lenses we are looking through by choosing what to focus on. Literary criticism shows that we are creating our own interpretations of what we look at in life or what we read.

This has been used for my own work during Studio and Craft in semester 1 because when we are taught to create artworks, we are taught to do things according to how we feel. We make artworks and also use our own philosophies to show the meaning behind them. Most of the time these philosophies are made up of our own literary criticism. Hence, I think that phenomenology is a very important baseline of how we view life and our world as a whole.

Kay Brown (Four 4 Consent, Nightlife Safety Summit) and Caeli Higgins (Music Industry Watchdog) join Shift Orion to describe the origins of the Eat Predators collective and how the brand was co-opted as they were driven out… just before Shift discovered it on social media, joined the unregulated Eat Predators Book Club, and hauled his ass from SF to LA to help the mysteriously misrepresented "leadership" lock down a business strategy.

Caeli and Kay detail their experience forming Eat Predators alongside other survivors and organizers like Nomi Abadi, Sochil Martin, and Alexa Nikolas. 

They cover the first planning meetings, escalating miscommunication and misrepresentation accelerated by media attention from a nearly-off-brand protest at Nickelodeon, and challenges navigating interpersonal and professional conflicts as the group (and Alexa's wounded ego) grew faster than anyone (except people who’ve been crushed by it) could imagine. As the media and public began to exclusively center and sensationalize Alexa, her participation and story have warped.

Shift describes his experience getting into the "Eat Predators book club" (then finding out it was never supposed to exist), having a short-lived but intense friendship with Alexa (and an even shorter-lived role working as her media and public relations manager), and being shocked and heartbroken discovering that Alexa had misled him about everything. Opening up about getting to know her remotely then planning an in-person visit, even staying at Alexa's house for 5 days, Shift recalls how quickly Alexa's endearing personality turned hostile after he became concerned about her capacity and ethics as she orchestrated the book club community and other people to shun him by making alarming and untrue claims.

Ultimately, the conversation remains loving and generous with hope for accountability, amends, and honesty to prevail.

Kay is a member of the Michigan Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence, Campus Advocacy and Prevention Professionals Association, and GLAAD.

Seongwoo dropped his books when you saw you walk by

you were as beautiful as ever

but he’d knew that you’d never look at him the same way he looked at you

more or less, you wouldn’t look at anyone that way anyways

you were too focus on your college degree to date 

when you looked over at him, he frantically looked away as he picked up his books

you were on the phone with your friend as you helped him 

you noticed his books brought you back memories from your first year in college

“what? there’s no way I’d date someone younger than me if I wanted to date..” 

he nodded to thank you and you nodded back as you went on your way

clenching his heart, he was slightly discouraged to hear that

you were his upperclassman; on your last year of college

whereas he just enrolled as a freshman

he took it upon himself to change your mind

Seongwoo clenched his fist as he nodded in determination

he checked his phone and widened his eyes

“I’M LATE FOR WORK!!”

with all his might, he dashed to the bubble tea shop on campus

“you know if you’re late, I’m gonna have to demote ya..” Seongwoo’s manager sighed

“but I don’t wanna do that since you bring in a lot of female customers.. so.. don’t be late,” the manager placed his hand on Seongwoo’s shoulder and gave him a thumb’s up

Seongwoo nodded as he pushed his hair back into a black cap 

10 minutes into his shift, customers came flooding in

“come on, y/n, I heard the workers here are cute!!” 

hearing your name caught Seongwoo’s attention

he saw you sighing as your friend was dragging you to the register

“I only agreed to come here for the boba and not the boys... I wouldn’t be interested anyways...”

Seongwoo’s eyes tried not to be reeling back to you but he couldn’t help it

“hey I gotta go to the bathroom, if you get to the register and I’m not there, get me a pink lychee with strawberry jellies okay?” your friend winked as she went over the cute worker to ask where the bathroom was

suddenly it was your turn and both you and Seongwoo were nervous

well Seongwoo was nervous because he was in your presence 

and you were nervous because you didn’t know what to get

“um.. wh-what can I get for you-u..” he bit on his tongue at the end of his sentence; he felt embarassed

but you were too busy scanning the menu for what you wanted

“uh.. a medium pink lychee with strawberry jellies for my friend...and....” 

you looked up at him at the end of your sentence, “what do you recommend?”

his palms were getting sweaty as he gulped down his nervousness

“do you want something fruity? or do you prefer milk teas?” maybe Seongwoo could find out what kind of person you are by what drinks you prefer

you placed your hand on your chin and pouted; Seongwoo’s heart was clinging onto it’s dear life, it was probably the cutest thing he’s seen

“I heard the lavender taro milk tea was good... could I get a medium one of that with regular boba?” 

he blinks out of his daydream (of going on dates with you) and nods as he punches in the total amount

“that’d be 5 dollars..” he mumbles quietly

you furrowed your brows, “did you add in my order?”

Seongwoo looks over his shoulder casually and replies, “it’s on the house..for here or to go?”

you blinked at him a couple of times before handed over your card

“for here....aren’t you...” you say as he proceeds with the transaction, “the guy who dropped books this morning?”

(so she does remember me!)

Seongwoo nods as he sends you a smile

“I don’t like owing people...so that’s why your drink was on the house,” he hands back your card

“it was just an act of kindness...” you walked away as your friend comes back from the bathroom

“you talked to the cutest worker here!?” she slaps you on the back

“well.. he is nice.. remember when I told you over the phone that I helped a guy who dropped his books, it was him.. he said my drink was on the house...”

“isn’t he just the sweetest?”

“well he made me pay for your drink..”

“what an ass...”

you chuckled at your friend

he didn’t seem like a bad guy.. he was just younger than you...

you and your friend sat down to get some classwork done

“here’s the pink lychee with strawberry jellies and the lavender taro milk tea with boba...”

you both looked up to see Seongwoo

“thanks,” you both said

“hey y/n, there’s a piece of paper under your drink..” your friend points out

you pulled it from under your drink

you were flustered and your friend was making a scene

“LOOK AT THAT! YOU SHOULD GO FOR HIM..” she whispered loudly

you smacked her as you went back to your work

you’ve received small acts of affections from your admirer

like; bouquets of flowers, cups of coffee or bubble tea, snacks etc

you felt reluctant to take them

but Seongwoo was persistant

“you know I don’t date-”

“THANK YOU FOR ACCEPTING IT!” he’d bow deeply before running away; not giving you a chance to give it back to him

ONE DAY

you were taking the long way to the library since you finished your test early when you saw Seongwoo with a girl

they seemed to be having a serious conversation

“why are you trying so hard to impress y/n!? she doesn’t even care about you! she’s just toying with you..”

Seongwoo clenches his fists, “yes.. she doesn’t really care for me.. but.. just being near her.. just seeing her once in my day, makes my day.. she makes me happy regardless if she likes me or not...”

you leaned forward to hear more of what he’s saying but you stepped on crumpled newspaper; causing the both of them to look at you 

“s-sorry..” you muttered as you went on your way

you felt guilty for hurting two people without even knowing

“y/n! wait!” Seongwoo tried to follow you but the girl held his wrist to prevent him from going

“I’m sorry..” he gently pushes her hand away and runs after you

somehow, Seongwoo caught up to you

“y/n,” he puts his hand on your shoulder but the glare that you gave him made him step back

“why,” you tried to keep your voice at a gentle tone; masking your burst of confusion, “why do you like me? it’s just about looks isn’t it?”

you were used to guys liking you because you were “pretty,” especially younger guys

that was the number one reason why you didn’t like younger guys 

Seongwoo looked at his feet; he couldn’t look up at you 

“yeah...”

you scoffed as you turned your back to him and walked away

“it was at first,” you heard him say; causing you to stop in your tracks

“the more I paid attention to you, the more I could see that you were more than a pretty face...”

you heard his steps slowly come closer and closer to where you stopped

“you’re caring and nice; whether someone is watching or not... you’re quiet but you’re not afraid to say what’s on your mind.. you’re someone who I can learn from..”

you could clearly hear his voice right behind you

“I don’t know the reason why you don’t date younger guys but...I’m willing to do whatever it takes to be by your side.. even if.. even if I can’t be with you..”

slowly looking over your shoulder, you could tell that there was no way he could be lying with a set of eyes rimmed with building tears

no guy has ever gave you a clear reason why they liked you; they always tried to go around the fact that they only liked you because you were pretty

you took a deep breath in and replied to him, “you’re persistent..”

his eyes left his shoes and were met with your eyes

“but I guess persistence is key... I’m surprise that you’re passionate, but.. gimme time..”

the fact you were giving him a glimmer of hope made his heart swell up

his face lit up like fireworks as his face is basically in front of yours

feeling embarrassed; you were giving into dating for once

you didn’t know what it was to have a fluttering heart anymore until that moment 

you turned around and started walking fast, “and stop it with the gifts.. I don’t have anymore room in my place to put flowers...”

Seongwoo could tell you were trying to be tsundere but he could see right through you that you were blushing

“lemme hold your bags..”

“I can hold my own bags..”

but by the time you both got to the library, Seongwoo was happily holding them for you
