His head bobs in what’s probably a yes. “Great!” Fuck. Or a ragged monosyllabic man wearing a collar shows up at Wei Ying's music store. Wei Ying and A-Yuan ask, is anyone going to adopt this guy? And then they don't wait for an answer.

Kay's comments: This story really had me hooked and I could hardly wait for each new chapter. It's a modern AU set in America based on the movie Unleashed. I didn't know the movie and thankfully, that didn't matter, because no knowledge is needed! Wen Ruohan is a crime boss here and Lan Wangji is his top-fighter that he keeps in a cage and collared and uses to commit violence on his enemies and to win illegal fights (he gave me Winter Soldier vibes!). One day, Lan Wangji manages to escape and he gets taken in by Wei Wuxian and his son A-Yua. Cue lots of hurt/comfort, some drama, family feels, tragic pasts, Wangxian getting together and having to deal with Wen Ruohan. Lots of angst and a well-deserved happy ending. Despite the author warning that Lan Wangji is way out of character here, it didn't really feel that way for me. Like, it totally made sense given his circumstances. I really loved the character dynamics in this story. The Jiang parents are divorced for example and now Yu Ziyuan is trying to be a less shitty parent and mostly doing it by bribing her grandchildren with gifts and one of my favourite parts, though he doesn't play that much of a role, is what the author made of Wen Zhuliu, because I'm really weak for him! I also really loved the slow thawing of Lan Wangji and him growing into his new life and finding a place for himself. Mojo's comments: Fucking spectacular, and I'm in a car and not able to make a good bookmark, but DAMN, y'all. Lwj has been kept in a cage and made to fight all his life, and finally slips his chain and sinks into domestic bliss with wwx and a-yuan: learns to read and use a fork and it's beautiful. But of course, his past doesn't want to let him go.

Excerpt: “Was that woman your mother?” Wei Ying’s smile falls. His mouth opens in a pretty O. “Oh, you mean Yu Ziyuan? The one who picked A-Yuan up?” Wangji nods. “No. Well, not really. My mother died when I was about A-Yuan’s age. My father, too. Yu Ziyuan and her husband—well, ex-husband now—raised me after that. More or less.” Wangji nods like he understands and stares down at the counter. He doesn’t know what to call a woman who is sort of a mother but not really. “Where are your parents?” Wei Ying asks. His voice is soft, like he isn’t sure he wants Wangji to hear. “Dead.” He doesn’t remember his parents, but when Wangji was younger, Wen Ruohan told him that he had taken Wangji in after they died. “Oh. I’m sorry.” Wangji doesn’t understand why Wei Ying would apologize. He’s afraid to ask why. “A-Yuan’s mother died, too,” Wei Ying says. When Wangji peeks up at him, Wei Ying has gone back to staring at the computer screen. He isn’t smiling. “She died when he was a baby.” It hadn’t occurred to Wangji that Wei Yuan must have a mother. He knows about mothers, but he’s never actually met one. He doesn’t know what to say, so he says what Wei Ying said: “I’m sorry.”

I'm rereading Twelve Moons And A Fortnight for the 4th time, as well as dipping into your other fics - I love the world(s) you've created so much!

I want to ask about the thing I'm kind of still confused about: how exactly does Wei Ying (and Xichen as well) actuallt cultivate a child? Is it your JC that they do some kind of intensive meditation that creates one from a golden core? Or does the soul that wants to reincarnate pick them or what?

Always the former, sometimes both. The parent's golden core has to set aside an amount of "extra" energy equal to the total energy the child's body would contain, once born; and after the parent stockpiles enough energy, the child is able to use the parent's body as a kind of template to construct a body of its own. This is why the infant spirit of Lan Jingyi spends so much time wandering around Lan Xichen's body in Life in Love's Exchange; he's learning how human bodies work so that he can manifest one after LXC saves up enough energy to create it.

Re: reincarnation, this is the only way someone without a golden core can cultivate a baby in the TMAAF verse. When Jiang Yanli's soul was ready to reincarnate, she went to her original birthplace of Lotus Pier and found that two of Jiang-furen's dead relatives were waiting to be reincarnated as her children; and by the time she traveled to Lanling, Jin Zixuan's spirit had already chosen Jin Ling as his future father. I saw a thing — I dunno how accurate it is, but I saw a thing — that said the traditional mindset around martial arts is that parents should not teach their own children, even if the parent is an absolute master, because naturally you’ll be less willing to beat the crap out of your own actual kid and therefore actually stall their progress. Even if you try to be strict and have high expectations, you’ll still end up stalling their progress because you won’t force them to push through their own discomfort as far or as frequently as you probably would to just one more student.

And now I’m picturing Sizhui raised by Wangxian and all the other juniors commenting that the Lan sword master and teachers must have really pulled through because everyone knows Hanguang-Jun is so indulgent and doting on his son and there’s no way he would have drilled Sizhui hard enough for him to be as prepared and composed as he is in crisis situations.

Sizhui, who has spent his entire life dealing with Wei Wuxian’s “teach kids to swim by throwing them directly into the water without warning and only intervene if they look like they are actively drowning” approach, just sits there like 🙃

The sun was shining rather brightly far away in the sky, and the somewhat cold wind was good on their skin as they walked through the park watching the green coming back after the winter. It was spring and both Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji loved this season, but neither were really happy to be strolling on a date today.

You see, they are parents, and it’s quite recently. To be honest, today is their little A-Yuan’s 100th day and they have a small party organized by their parents, the same ones that urged them (read: kick them out of the apartment) to go out alone, just the two of them for the first time since the birth.

And although they do need this time alone, all they could talk about is their little one, missing him after so many days together.

“Do you think he’s ok? Is he crying? Feeling alone?” Wei Wuxian asked, almost whining, hugging his husband’s arm.

“Mother and mother-in-law are taking care of him.” Lan Wangji said “And father-in-law and uncle. I trust them.”

Wei Wuxian looked at him “You don’t sound very optimistic.”

Lan Wangji sighed “I also miss A-Yuan.”

Kissing his husband's cheek just because he can, Wei Wuxian sighed too and laid his head on Lan Wangji’s shoulder.

“Where should we go, though? I’m feeling hungry.”

“It’s noon.” Lan Wangji nodded “Where do Wei Ying want to go?”

“To be honest? Home.” he chuckled “Should we go to our favorite restaurant?”

Lan Wangji said the name outloud to be sure and Wei Wuxian confirmed it was the one, so they went to take the subway.

“Do you think I can drink again?” Wei Wuxian asked when they sat down inside the subway car.

“Mn.”

“But maybe I’ll choose tea.” Wei Wuxian hummed “I kinda want orange juice, though.”

“Then Wei Ying can drink orange juice.”

“Lan Zhan!” Wei Wuxian laughed.

They went out at the right station walking hand in hand, talking, again, about little Lan Yuan and his needs.

The walk to the restaurant wasn't long and soon they were already sitting down, luckily, on the last available table, thanking their host. And although they looked through the menu, both decided to ask for the same thing they almost always choose when they come to this specific restaurant.

“You know…” Wei Wuxian began, taking a sip of his orange juice “I’m feeling so tired.”

“Mn. A-Yuan… We haven’t slept much.”

“How can someone so cute be so troublesome?” Wei Wuxian laughed, “I love him so much.”

Lan Wangji smiled softly at his husband “We both love him.”

“Of course, of course. Even when he stinks so much we need to cover our noses.”

“Or when he pees on us.”

Wei Wuxian laughed again, “Or when he throws up on our shoulder.”

“Specially when he pulls our hair.” Lan Wangji let out a small huff that was definitely a laugh.

Their food soon came out and they ate in silence, Wei Wuxian feeling too hungry to keep talking. A slice of red velvet cake was shared between them after the meal with two cups of the same jasmine tea, and they smiled as they fed each other. They definitely looked like a young couple on a date, and not at all a married one with a baby back home. Wei Wuxian it was fun, this image of how much in love they still are with each other, it makes him feel things like warmth and the need to squeal with his head underwater.

“Lan Zhan?”

“Mn?”

“I love you.” he said, trying to ease the feelings inside his chest.

Lan Wangji only looked soft and smiled, holding his hand across the table and said: “I love you, too.”

Damn him. Now Wei Wuxian is feeling more like he is going to explode.

They paid for their meal and went out of the restaurant hand in hand and smiling - more like grinning in Wei Wuxian’s case.

“Do you think it’s ok to go back home now?” Wei Wuxian asks.

“No.” Lan Wangji answered with a head shake “Mother in law said she would call.”

“Ah. Ok…”

It’s not that Wei Wuxian didn’t want to be with his husband, actually, he really missed being alone with Lan Wangji, to just being with him, just the two of them. But A-Yuan is their first son, their first baby, and this is the first time they spent away from him. Wei Wuxian has fears, and he’s sure Lan Wangji also has his own, after all, they never experienced this before today.

Taking a deep breath to calm his heart and mind, Wei Wuxian tightened his hold on Lan Wangji’s hand and pulled him to another direction.

“Where?” his husband asked.

“Call a didi and then we’ll go to a spa to relax.” Wei Wuxian grinned, taking his phone out “Ah?! It’s not even 1pm?!”

Lan Wangji shook his head fondly, and let himself be pulled.

Neither of the two wanted to say out loud that they fell asleep while in session, the massage was too good, as expected from a luxurious and expensive place, and they had been sleeping very little since Wei Wuxian’s last month of pregnancy, and babies are not good for sleep routine to be very honest. It makes Lan Wangji remember the night of their wedding, how they were both so tired that any kind of intimacy beyond sleeping in the same bed never happened.

It’s almost dusk now and they have been given the ok from Wei Wuxian’s father to go back home, so now they were trying not to look as if they were rushing.

“Hundred days, huh…” Wei Wuxian sighed, head on his husband’s shoulder while the car stopped at a red light.

“Mn.” Lan Wangji nodded “Growing up.”

“We knew that. Our A-Yuan is going to grow up fast. But to experience…”

“To know and to see are two different things.” Lan Wangji nodded and kissed his husband’s head just because.

“Soon enough he's going to be talking.”

“And walking.”

“Oh no! Walking!” Wei Wuxian made an over dramatic gasp, making Lan Wangji smile “And then soon he’s going to be a kindergarten! And, what?! A teenager after that? No~ Let me have A-Yuan as a baby forever.”

“Not so fast.” Lan Wangji said “We have time.”

“Hmm… We have.” Wei Wuxian nodded.

Soon, but somehow not soon enough, they reached their apartment complex and thanked their driver before rushing out and passing through security as quickly as possible.

“Ready for your son's hundred day party?” Wei Wuxian asked with an amused smile as they waited for the lift.

“Waited for too long.” was the serene answer.

Wei Wuxian giggled and they stepped inside the lift “Do you think mom just ignored the baby sized tuxedo and put A-Yun into a baby sized hanfu?”

“She’s your mother.” Lan Wangji nodded rather seriously while clicking on their floor number, making his husband laugh.

“I love you so much, let’s go be parents!”

Lan Wangji could only smile fondly at him.

There is a pause. “Well,” an unfamiliar voice replies, notably cheerful, though overloud and the slightest bit slurred in a way that identifies the speaker as likely not being entirely sober, perfectly matching the loud music and din of voices in the background. “Not quite, actually.” (Or, Wei Ying meets a drunk LXC at a bar. They promptly devolve into being chaos gremlins together.)

Kay's comments: After reading this fic, I have decided that we desperately need more drunk Lan content! How many problems could be solved/avoided if just the Lans would have gotten drunk more in their life! This was extremely cute and I enjoyed it very much! Lan Xichen is, of course, the cutest, happiest drunk in history and Wei Wuxian is such a good bean for taking care of him. Loved the Lan Wangji POV of this entire situation, how he woke up and upon realizing what was going on immediately went into overdrive, wanting to take care of his brother and protecting him from possible stranger danger, but then slowly realizing that Wei Wuxian was in fact a good bean and becoming quickly enarmored with him. The story is marked as finished for now, but the author said that there might be a second part in the future!

Unexpectedly, the longer the man talks, the more Lan Zhan finds a soft sort amusement suffusing him, strangely unbothered by the ceaseless chatter from the other end, his immediate worry for his brother dwindling and disappearing beyond his own anxiety to get to him and get him home. Sure, he isn’t particularly happy to know that his brother is drunk at some bar somewhere, but Xichen seems to have gotten rather lucky in having come across someone so entirely concerned with getting him home safely. People who genuinely care, much less about complete strangers are rather hard to come by nowadays. Even more so in his family’s… profession.

Wei Ying pinches his nose to keep from laughing. "Lan Zhan, I was thirty-five. And Yuanyuan was only sixteen. I know I used to complain about my bad back over dinner, but I did not act like a grandfather."

"You did. I am thirty-five now, and I know it would not have been so difficult as you feared, for us," Lan Wangji says fervently. "But even so, you made the correct decision for Sizhui and the little ones by choosing not to—"

"And for you," Wei Ying interrupts. "You had no business taking up with a single father. You weren't even finished with school, and you could barely afford that little apartment you were living in."

"Out of choice, Wei Ying. I could have used my inheritance if I needed it."

"Yes, but you wanted to strike out on your own, and you were proud of yourself for it," Wei Ying says patiently. "And it hardly matters now, anyway."

Suddenly, Lan Wangji remembers being twenty-five and heartbroken, vowing to Xichen—through tears, no less—that he would never love another man as he loved Wei Ying if he had the rest of eternity to love in; and then he remembers the first night he laid eyes on Wei Ying after those six long years of separation, when Sizhui invited them both to dinner to celebrate his first orchestra showcase.

Lan Wangji was tempted to repeat his confession that very evening, and he would have repeated it if he had not been afraid to ruin the showcase for Sizhui.

"I do not regret the wait, or your choice. I could never regret it," he whispers at last, reaching up to touch Wei Ying's cheek. "After all, you promised to listen if I returned in ten years and asked the same question again."

the only thing i still remember is that wen qing does a surgery to bring back wei wuxian's core, and the new core is from a wen prisoner who is set to be executed. the prisoner turns out to be wen yuan's bio dad, and he's willing.

A) I think this one might have appeared in your blog and that's how I learned about it the first time. Modern AU Wangxian where they're retired/considering retiring figure skaters, and the fic is a series of them trying to have sex but something going wrong. At the end LWJ breaks/hurts his ankle really badly on the way to a cabin to have sex in Olympics gear, and then they get married.

B) WWX comes back in a random cultivator's body while LWJ is recovering from the discipline whip, and he sneaks into the Cloud Recesses to learn about A-Yuan. I think the cultivator gave his body up to WWX to punish him, and the curse mark on his arm becomes activated when he's happy, and it activates so badly it nearly cuts his arm off.

So Lan Wangji and Lan Xichen reached immortality and now they are living in present time where everyone has reincarnated. Lan Wangji has custody of Lan Sizhui and I think Lan Jingyi as well but not sure about the latter part. Both of them attend high school where Wei Wuxian is a teacher (I think he just transferred to the school but am not sure). Jin Ling also attends school with them. Jiang Cheng takes care of him and he is a policeman. He does not talk to Wei Wuxian as he blames him for their sister death/bad medical state. I don't remember exactly which one it was. 13. Hello! I'm looking for match-making fic where Jin Zixuan (tired of wwx constantly interrupting family time with his wife and newly born son) decides the best way to get him out of the way is to matchmake him with someone. I think he tries Nie Mingjue mainly, because they have similar interests, etc.

Jiang Cheng also gets roped in, but he thinks Jin Zixuan is nuts the whole time. NMJ thinks Wei wuxian is definitely flirting with him at some point because his muscles get complimented? Lan Xichen has to reassure him that "no, he is just like that".

It's a comedy of errors mainly, because LWJ and WWX definitely have something going on between them, and it ends with them running off with horses to elope into the sunset or smth. Jiang Yanli doesn't know her husband's matchmaking scheme, but she does know about wwx and lwj and helps them elope at the end.

Pretty sure it was a short fic, ignores canon and occurs in a what-if scenario where the whole burial mounds situation didn't happen.

Now this is meaner than i like to be when talking about fandom because i am pro people having fun and doing what they want and playing around with dynamics. So let me preface by saying that if you like this headcanon there's nothing wrong with you and I hope you have a great day. That said, aside from the Wen erasure and trying to flatten a more unconventional family dynamic into a nuclear family shaped hole one of the main reasons I vibe less with the "wangxian are a-yuan's dads" headcanon is that I honestly think it's kind of... Lan Wangji character assasination.

Yeah that sounds really harsh but the headcanon recquires Lan Wangji formally adopting a-yuan as his own and/or raising him as his son and i cannot stress this enough he would not do that. Because that would be actively endangering A-Yuan's safety.

To be clear: Lan wangji and wen yuan canonically look so alike that strangers who'd never met either of them assumed they were father and son. If Lan Wangji suddenly comes back with a child that he is insisting to raise, and that child looks exactly like him, people aren't going to assume that's hanguang-jun's adopted son. That is hanguang-jun's biological son with a mystery mother!

Jiang Fengmian didn't even formally adopt wei wuxian, and people knew who his actual (married!) parents were, and they still regularly assumed that he was secretly jiang fengmian's bastard instead of the child of the man cangse sanren literally eloped with.

If that's how eager people are about bastard rumours, what do you think happens if one of the most eligible bachelors in the jianghu turns up with an "adopted" son who looks just like him and refuses to say anything about where he came from?

Yeah, Hanguang-jun knocked someone up and apparantly the union was so scandalous he's deperately trying to cover it up while literally bringing this bastard kid into his own clan. Can you imagine a more juicy rumour? Everyone would want to know who this kid's mother is. A-Yuan's background would be one of the hottest pieces of gossip around.

Which, if you're triyng to make sure that no one finds out that this kid is actually a Wen and came straight from the burial mounds, is really fucking bad. If everyone is looking for A-Yuan's backround and someone succeeds, his life is in danger.

A-Yuan lost his memories, and that must've hurt like hell for Lan Wangji, both for A-Yuan's own sake and because that means this child that Wei Wuxian loved and who loved him in turn now no longer remembers him, will only ever know him from the lies the world tells about him. But he didn't do anything about it, because not knowing was safer for A-Yuan. Even if Lan Wangji wanted to personally adopt him, he would not risk A-Yuan's safety to satisfy his own feelings.

On the other hand, A-Yuan looking like Lan Wangji means he looks like a Lan, and wonky as the mdzs timeline is it's pretty clear he was born during the sunshot campaign. The Lan lost a lot of people in the war, they probably have loads of war orphans, and this kid clearly looks like one, they'd have no problem taking him in. Are they 100% sure who his parents were? No, but they probably died shortly after he was born and weren't able to safely return him to cloud recesses.

It's really easy for Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji to come up with a story from here. Someone came across the kid on the streets, saw the family resemblance, and decided to take him back to his home! After the burial mounds Wen Yuan probably wouldn't look too different form an average street rat. Or maybe the boy was raised by a common family who told them about the cultivators that left him there for safekeeping, unable to idenify them exactly but mentioning the signature white robes and forehead ribbon. Who knows!

The point is that Lan Wangji and Lan Sizhui could, for Sizhui's own safety, not be seen as father and son. From Sizhui's comments that Lan Wangji was "like a father or older brother" to him, and the fact that Lan Wangji chose his courtesy name we can infer that after he got out of seclusion Lan Wangji was more involved in his life than he would've been with other disciples. But from the outside that could be explained as a teacher having a favorite student, and an honoured sect elder (and family member, though now the assumption is "distant cousin/nephew" instead of "bastard child") helping to name a child in lieu of parents that are no longer there. By all accounts, Lan Yuan was raised collectively by the Lan as one of the several war orphans they must have had. Just like how he was raised collectively by the burial mound Wen before that.

Would MXTX canon couples be good as parents

In chronological order

Bingqiu: Not really great as parents. I feel like they wouldn't be ones for kids. Shen Qingqiu already has Binghe's crying to worry about, he cannot handle a baby, and Binghe needs his Shizun's attention 24/7 or he will commit atrocities. As teachers? That's another story, they'd probably do a decent job. Probably.

Moshang: Eh. Could go either way but I'm gonna say no. They would not be that good as parents, but WONDERFUL uncle material. If someone they were close to had a kid, that kid would know them as the cool uncles who take them to the amusement park when their parents can't.

Wangxian: OH MY GOD YES. LOOK AT LAN YUAN!! THEY DID SUCH A GOOD JOB. GIVE THEM LIKE 10 MORE. They deserve the Dads of the Century award. The fact that both of them managed to somehow be single dads AND be so freaking good at it that even after all that trauma their boy went through he STILL managed to be well adjusted is so freaking lovely.

Hualian: NEVER. EVER. LET THESE PEOPLE NEAR A CHILD THEY WILL FORGET ABOUT IT IN TEN MINUTES. By themselves? MAYBE. Together. NEVER. I know Lang Ying is no longer canon (thank god honestly), but the fact that they left him and Guzi ALONE with a CANNIBAL still wreaks my brain.
