Katara's Lightning: waterbending technique

Part 1

Book 3 provided some very good ideas for alternative uses of waterbending. Everyone knows bloodbending, one of the most powerful and conceptual techniques. In principle, I think the episode with Katara mastering this ability is the most interesting in the season.

But not only because of bloodbending, but also because of creative ways to obtain water. Get it out of the plants! Or even out of thin air! This opens up so many possibilities that, unfortunately, weren't explored during the season. Maybe this was considered in comics or LoK, but I would like to talk about my version of the development of the concept.

I was very interested in controlling water in the air. I thought that this was a very revolutionary approach, because you need to get water from essentially nothing, it’s difficult and at the same time convenient. A source of water is always at hand, great!

However, the question is: is this all? Is it really impossible to go further and develop the ability in some other way? Lately I have been very interested in this question, and my reflection has taken me in an unexpected direction.

I thought about storm clouds. We have already been shown how, together with an airbender, even an inexperienced waterbender can control clouds. However, in the future, when Katara develops her skills, she may well be able to cope with this task herself. Clouds are made of water, and thanks to Hama, she clearly learned to feel the element on a more subtle level and control it even in the air. Making water particles move in the sky might not be that difficult for her.

And imagine how cool it would look during the invasion of the Fire Nation. If Katara didn’t just fly on Appa and destroy airships one by one, but carried a thunderstorm across the sky, like Storm from the X-Men. Bad weather would prevent the air force from entering the battle, and rain would help the waterbenders on the ground and prevent the firebenders from fighting. This would not only be visually powerful, but also quite useful.

And then I thought about what happens in a thunderstorm. Lightning. The firebending technique can essentially be summoned by the opposite element! This idea amazed me…

Let's start with where lightning comes from in nature. In simple terms, when small water crystals of different sizes move very quickly inside a thundercloud and collide with each other, they form opposite charges in different parts of it. The result is natural lightning. That is, all that is needed is to be able to control the water particles in the air, and, as we know, Katara has learned this.

Imagine if, during the same invasion, she had gotten too caught up in creating a storm. The ice particles collided so quickly that at some point, lightning appeared in time with Katara's movements. Powerful, uncontrollable, dangerous. She and Appa were in the middle of a storm without any preparation or protection, it was scary. But at the same time exciting and intriguing. How does it feel to realize that you can create magic of the opposite element? This can't help but stun you.

But Katara would have to restrain herself. I don't think she liked it, but she didn't want to put Appa and herself in danger. As a result, the thunderstorm she created was not half as powerful as it could have been.

Why is it important? Because in my perception this is not just a technique. I feel like the storm, and in particular the lightning, in this case represents Katara herself in book 3. Remember her rage in the episode "Southern Raiders" when she expressed long-buried feelings about the loss of her mother. Remember how long and painfully she nursed Aang after his death, and subsequently experienced enormous stress in “The Puppetmaster” due to bloodbending. I think Katara needs some emotional release (which she got in "Southern Raiders", but more on that in part two). And lightning could personify that internal energy that strives outward.

Remember how Katara's anger manifested itself in book 1 through its effect on the water around her? What if it got bigger because Katara grew up as a master?

This time it is very dangerous to give in to feelings like this and turn them into the element, because Katara is not able to control the lightning itself, only create it. This can seriously hurt her herself, as well as those around her, just like words and deep resentments (for example, towards Sokka for not grieving the loss of their mother as much as she does). Therefore, there is nothing left to do but restrain the impulses of rage and irritation.

Perhaps she would even refuse to create new storms. Unfortunately, without someone who could control the direction of the lightning, she cannot guarantee the safety of herself and the people around her. But where can she find such a handyman?..

The Ice Deity and the Fire Deities

While very much male, the ice deity has been dubbed "Princess" by Ohime and Ohiwe since they love to give lil nicknames to their fellow deities. The two overheard mortals talking and using the phrase "ice queen" for the first time and were like "wait can you elaborate" and when hearing what it meant, they realized their ice deity buddy bro is nowhere NEAR that cold. So he can be the ice princess rather than queen. (he just accepts his fate from them and no other deity uses that nickname. it's just the fire duo)

A crazy thing about Mouthwashing is that Pony Express lost communication with one of its freighters for months and didn’t send anyone to check.

A genuinely reputable company, or at the very least a decent one, would have sent someone, something out to check after about two weeks of silence. Two months is when the crew start questioning if they are even being looked for which implies they were already expecting it to take a while cause P.E just doesn’t care.

They don’t care about who they hire. They don’t care about the conditions they place their crew in or how safe the safety measures actually are. They just don’t care, made rules and regulations so they can care less and succeed in getting away with it with how little those ideas are discussed.

A very neat fact about the hunter-nin of Mist: they have a special barrier ninjutsu that can protect specific body parts [such as an eye or a hand] and this jutsu is so important and secretive that not even the Mizukage knows how it works or how to get rid of it. Given my overall headcanons for Kohari, I fully believe she taught this barrier to Iruka, swearing him to utmost secrecy as she did. Not even Ikkaku knew they could use it. This barrier is how he managed to take a fuma straight to the spine and not end up fucking paralysed - he passes it off as just being lucky, which nobody questions because luck is the name of the game as a shinobi, but really he used the barrier to protect his spine, causing the fuma to slide off and lodge itself to the side of the column instead

Still a terrifying back wound that could've had dire consequences and causes him chronic pain and limits what stretches and movements he can do, but no longer as bad as it would've been had he not made the split second activation

Is water speech exclusive to aquatic taurs or can any human use it as long as they can stay underwater?

Oh, anyone can learn Waterspeak, absolutely! It’s just a matter of “do I need this in my life?” Spells are very tricky to learn and take a lot of practice to master, so unless you use it in your life a lot, most people don’t bother. It’s kinda like how almost anyone can learn to pick locks or do a one-foot spin on ice skates, a lot of us just don’t see a need to learn ^^’

Worry not, if a terrestrial human (taur or not) had an extended stay underwater but didn’t know how to cast Waterspeak, they would likely have a merm cast Waterspeak on them, or perhaps have other accommodations to account for the acoustics issue (nevermind the breathing issue, pressure issue, etc.).

i dont think you could get it just by looking at my posts but pb is my favorite character in the show. which makes it all the more infuriating that all discussion about her ideals on one specific side of the matter come off more as pr that helps her than a genuine understanding of her personality. everyone fixates on the end results of her development so much that its gotten hard to find discussion about her while she was going through the ropes that doesnt devolve into general name calling. like i dont think its horrible to disagree with her actions because you dont feel easy watching her do them. whats bad is never making it come to mind outside of discourse and only bringing up superficial traits of her on your own accord. hate to say this where ive already been scrutinized at large but this goes both ways

just, as a stan, dont get up in arms whenever people dont outwardly care for the lengths shes gone to protect herself and her environment. whatever bad thing shes done is not a full mirrored reflection of real life. i dont think people should vouch for her like she exists

In the interest of weird water tribe family dynamics, evil!Water Tribe AUs, and how you could get the 'marginalized underdog protagonist' dynamic with the good!Fire Sibs without the 'what if actually the marginalized people were the evil oppressors' Vibe.

I landed on adjusting the Fire Nation royal family dynamics directly, without altering the larger position of the Fire Nation aggressors and colonizers. So the broader history of imperialism and genocide remains and needs to be addressed, with everything basically going exactly the same up until Lu Ten dying and Iroh disappearing and Ozai trying to make his play for the throne. But...

In response to Azulon's threat, Ursa decides to kill both Ozai AND Azulon

Iroh doesn't come home like she expects (he can be that 'haunts the narrative' missing parental figure, maybe? Perhaps he just White Lotus' off?)

Zuko and Azula are the last remaining direct descendants of Sozin's line, too young to take power themselves but a clear threat to be eliminated/opportunity for anyone who would want to take the throne or set themself up as regent

So Ursa goes on the run BUT she takes Zuko and Azula with her

Zuko and Azula live the next years being actively hunted by claimants to throne who either want to kill them or use them as puppets to consolidate their power (+ by EK and WT military who still see capturing/killing them as a way to end the war?)

They need to conceal their identities, so you can layer in the 'keep your bending secret' storyline for both Zuko and Azula, but particularly Azula who is secretly trying to self-teach

Zuko won't ever be a nonbender, but him being worse/less interested than Azula (perhaps embracing swords?) could still carry the dynamic of feeling inadequate relative to his sister

The three of them could travel within the Fire Nation (and maybe outside of it as well?), needing to live cut off from resources, hunted, exposed to the consequences of the imperial military machine

Ursa could leave them behind somewhere where she thinks they will be safe (perhaps trying to to draw attention to herself to divert a threat, or to avoid being so recognizable as a unit of three?) and tell them to look out for each other

So now when they find Aang, Zuko our emotionally driven idealist seizes on the opportunity to right the wrongs he's seen. (And Zuko is so all-in on duty and responsibility, the idea of running away from the role of Avatar and rejecting those duties would not compute. Or alternately, he's projecting a lot onto Aang because he feels he's run away from his own duties)

And Azula takes Ursa's parting words very seriously, and is also tempted by the potential to get training again. She obviously she can't let idealistic dumb-dumb Zuzu wander off and get himself killed, or blow their cover at the first opportunity, so she joins them (obviously *not* to avoid being left behind. She wouldn't care about that. Definitely not.)

And so you get Zuko, Azula, and Aang as the Gaang, working to end the war and stop the Fire Nation so that everyone can live safe from Fire Nation aggression. And you retain:

The Fire Nation as a looming, active threat from all sides

The effects of imperialism on the world and people outside the Fire Nation

That sense of underdog marginalization, with Azula and Zuko as threats to the imperialist system and therefore objects of its violence (and also as targets to be captured by the Water Tribe even before Aang joins them)

The dynamic of a single parent trying to do whatever they can to protect their children, and protecting them by leaving them behind

And you can tee up an interesting exploration of individual actors vs institutional structures by having good!Fire sibs and evil!Hakoda/water sibs, while maintaining the broader Fire Nation imperial machine and Water Tribe position as target of its aggression.

...the outstanding question in an evil!Water Tribe AU, though: Who is the Gaang working to stop?

Hakoda individually? (I don't think that works) The Fire Nation? (Then why make Hakoda evil if we aren't stopping him) Probably some combination of the Fire Nation + Hakoda as someone whose actions are obstructing the larger peace, because he's functionally recreating the same systems with himself at the head.

I think it would be important though for it to be more of an 'Aang/the Gaang recognize the path Hakoda is on' type of setup rather than Hakoda actually like...invading and killing all the Kyoshi Islanders or something. Or more economic power/threat toward the NWT or surrounding regions? Basically keeping it in the realm of 'a colonized entity absorbing and re-enacting colonial and imperialist ideals unless they actively work to reject them' and not 'look who the *real* colonizers are.'

so about my audhd assessment

I wasn’t diagnosed. But. Doctor said that i need to see a specialist. And generally it was kinda confusing. She said that I, like, almost qualify for autism, tho my mom probably said that all things that i said were bullshit. And she discarded adhd because i wasn’t neurotic enough?????? Even though i told her that I practically had meltdowns for 2 previous days. And all other symptoms are there. And she said that i just have anger issues??????? Even though emotional outbursts are a legit thing that adhders expirience???????????

I feel like she just forgot half the shit that i told her before? But she said that she’ll refer me to another specialist.

Honestly i just think that she disregarded my experiences because they’re “subjective ”, and maybe because she thought it might be a teenager thing. It felt like she just didn’t asknoveleged (how the fuck do i spell) things that i didn’t explicitly stated, like, in bold letters but with words. To be fair she might’ve had couple good points but it might be just because in my family lotsa people r similar to me and my mother’s opinion is just as subjective. By her words I didn’t have repetitive behaviours even though I literally rewatched same 3 cartoons all the time. And lined up and sorted toys, and preferred not to engage in imaginative play.

Tbh it’s just confused me more and i will cry when i get back home. Also that thing with ignoring my perception. And lying about letting me ask questions in the end of the sesh.:,,,(

Tldr: Self diagnosis rules. I know myself better and it was just an another case in support of that statement.

12. moments of reconciliation

Their argument lingered in his mind. It had been more of a heated disagreement than a true argument, both exhausted and their tempers shorter than usual. He didn’t stew it on as he made his way back to his quarters, only regretted the way he had contributed to the escalation. He was fully prepared to apologize and move beyond it as long as she wasn’t ready for another fight. He nodded to the Marine who opened the hatch door and stepped through, but stopped at the sight that greeted him. 

Laura stood on the couch, one foot on the back with her hands braced against the wall. She held a piece of tape in her mouth and glanced over her shoulder at him, but quickly turned back to what she was doing. With one hand and her teeth, she ripped the tape in half and added it to the small snowflake her other hand held against the bulkhead.  “Laura, what the frak are you doing?” His words came out sharper than he intended, but he was too focused on getting to her before she fell and got hurt.  “Decorating.” She started to lean down for another snowflake, but he grabbed her hips and held them tightly.  “You’re going to get hurt.” He looked up at her, eyes narrowed behind his glasses and a firm frown fixed on his face.  “I’m fine, Bill. Please let go.” Her voice was calm and she reached for the snowflake again, ignoring how he leaned closer and held her steady. “If I fall now, it’s because you’re weighing me down and throwing off my balance,” she warned.  Remembering the apology he had planned, he sighed and forced himself to let go before he took a small step back. “I’m sorry,” he sighed, still keeping a close eye on her.   She grew quiet as she went back to decorating, adding a few more snowflakes to the area behind the couch. When she was done, she extended her hand to Bill and he helped her down, his eyes roaming over her to make sure she was okay.  “You’re hovering,” she pointed out softly.  “I’m sorry,” he repeated, his eyes meeting hers. “For hovering and for arguing.”  “I know.” She ran her fingers up his arm, over his shoulder, and finally cupped his face. “I’m sorry too.” “We still need to figure out what to do with the Argo Navis.” He shook his head and wrapped his arm around her waist, his other still holding hers.  “You were right about the ultimatum. If the captain doesn’t want to cooperate…” She let the sentence trail off, not liking the resolution but acknowledging its necessity.  “Go back to decorating. I’ll take care of it.” He kissed her softly but she dropped her hand and shook her head.  “I’ll be there. But thank you.”  He nodded, allowing them a moment to just enjoy each other before they returned to the unpleasant task that awaited them.

Y'know what I am pondering while waiting for Ark to finish downloading and while watching a size comparison of all the creatures. Like this shouldn't cause me to think of this but welcome to adhd lol

But if I remember right you can use berries and ink (not irl, at least not that easily) to make inks and paints and such. So now I am thinking of them putting war paint on their pets, especially if they need to tell them apart.

Which would especially help for when they have the tek things because most of those would look near identical, especially things like the drones.
