A friend of mine (a reader of comics not a creator of them for extra context) was talking this morning about this one hiveworks picked up that was like "god sorry i quit making this, it was just such a failure and i couldn't figure out why" when it didn't go viral or whatever after like. 50 pages.

Like, i didn't even pull in two-digit views per day until like 150 pages in maybe?? I think that little glimpse is really indicative of the extremely skewed expectations people are coming at webcomics with these days, for some reason they're viewed as this launchpad for Other Things (i knew a couple who were openly contemptuous of webcomics, and admitted theirs was literally just part of their plan to get a film deal lmfao) or they get lumped in with content farm type shit for generating fast money except ohhhhh my god comics are NOT FAST IN ANY SENSE OF THE WORD. They're brutal and thankless and even if you have the best work habits in the world they destroy your body just making them!! You will toil for years and years before anyone gives a shit and maybe they never will!! there is NO reason to fuck with any of this if you're not here for genuine reasons, even if you DO manage to make some amount of money it's never going to actually balance out the resources you spend making it. you /have/ to make it up with how happy the work makes you on its own and so many of these folks getting crushed by the webcomic Sisyphus boulder would be happier if they just did freelance art or something. There's no shame in that this is an objectively unhinged career to pursue lmfao

i used to freehand comics all the time as a child and since the part i liked was the drawing part i would just draw panel after panel because i didn't want to stop drawing to think about icky icky words, plus the story TOTALLY still made perfect sense! to me! and noone else, but 'whoooo caaaaares omgggg its not like comics and sequantial art are a communicative meeediummmm lmaoooooo'. i spent my entire childhood telling myself stuff like "oh pfft I know this story by heart- ill SIMPLY remember the dialogue and write it later" ...and. I can't help but admire baby maiora's (call that a minora ba tm tsk) fucking audacity? hubris? confident wrongness? kid couldn't even remember to finish the comics in the first place? INCREDIBLE levels of unearned self assurance, wish that were me, genuinely- what an icon!!! anyway i think i have forever cursed myself
