A Guide to Pokemon IRL

Hello! Pokemon IRL has been getting more and more popular over the year and a half I've been in the community, and I'm seeing lots of people being confused by it.

So I'm making this guide, to hopefully help people understand it better, and perhaps join us in this wacky community.

Part 1: The Basics

Essentially, Pokemon IRL is a RP community centered on one single premise: Blogging as if you were in the Pokemon world. It's a hybrid of askblogs, RP blogs, and general tumblr blogs.

There's very few rules to it, other than just "don't be a jerk". There's all kinds of Pokemon IRL blogs, from regular OC trainers, to canon characters, to characters who are Pokemon themselves, to even Fallers from non-Pokemon media, and more!

The main thing is that 98% of Pokemon IRL operates on the multiverse. Blogs can have conflicting canons, since the multiverse exists, and the blogs can be from different universes. This also means that multiple people can RP the same character. I've lost count of the amount of Kieran and Silver blogs.

Why is Pokemon-world tumblr multiversal? Who knows! But that's the one generally accepted canon thing across almost all Pokemon IRL blogs.

Part 2: Glossary

I know glossaries are usually at the ends of books, but I figure it's important that I define some important terms before I get to the rest of this guide.

Rotomblr - The generally accepted name for Pokemon-world tumblr. I personally prefer to use the name Tacklr instead, but that's just my opinion.

Sapient Pokemon - Pokemon that are sapient. Typically refers to Pokemon that run blogs. Some blogs don't allow interactions with them. Some blogs love interacting with them, though, such as all my blogs!

Eebydeeby - A human that has been turned into a Pokemon. "Eeby" is short for it. "Sleeby" means "slow eeby", or a human that has been or is in the process of slowly turning into a Pokemon.

Hybrid - This has two meanings. The first is someone who's part human and part Pokemon. The second is a Pokemon that's part one species, part another species.

Pelipper Mail - This is a multiversal system of mail, powered via Pelipper! You can have Pelippers send items to other blogs with this. Can be enabled or disabled per blog. Same goes with the next five terms.

Pelipper Unmail - Instead of giving, this is taking. This steals something from another blog via Pelipper.

Pelipper Malice - Essentially, this is sending something to another blog that you know will hurt them.

Musharna Mail - It's like Pelipper Mail, but with dreams! This can be used to send dreams to other blogs.

Musharna Malice - Just like Musharna Mail, but it's nightmares instead of dreams.

Magic Anons - Essentially, this allows anons to do whatever they'd like to the characters on your blog. Use caution when enabling this, though, as it's suspected that some people fetish mine with these.

High Stakes - Basically, this refers to anything that can majorly injure many characters, or otherwise have lots of bad stuff happen. Many blogs don't like interacting with this stuff, so it's best to tag it.

Drama Stakes - Like High Stakes, but less. This is when stuff is happening that could lead to in-universe ruined relationships. Best to tag this too.

Ultra Stakes - Like High Stakes, but more. This is when things lead to potential death of many characters. Definitely best to tag this as well.

Chosen - Sometimes someone is a legendary's favorite special little person, and they get powers from it! That's essentially what a Chosen is.

Faller - Someone, usually from a non-Pokemon media, who falls into the Pokemon world. Essentialyl a way of writing a non-Pokemon character in Pokemon IRL.

Self-Insert Faller - An OOC blogrunner falls into the Pokemon world. Can get very meta.

Muse Mixup Madness - At the start of every month, there's an event where some blogs temporarily change their core concept for a day or a few. It's best to tag these, and to give warnings beforehand.

Part 3: Setting up your Blog

Setting up a Pokemon IRL blog is a lot like setting up a regular tumblr blog, just in-character.

The main thing you'll need is a pinned post explaining the premise of the blog. These are usually in-character, with an OOC section at the bottom.

It's best to warn for possible triggers that might pop up on the blog, as well as explaining your boundaries (i.e. if you don't want Pelipper Mail).

Feel free to theme your blog too, changing the header and icon, adjusting the theme colors, maybe even have a custom theme!

Once you have that all set, you're ready to interact!

Part 4: Interacting

The main thing is, don't be afraid to interact. Even with big blogs. Everyone's happy to receive interactions! Worst that can happen is that your interaction is ignored.

So don't be scared! Jump in, and start interacting!

Part 5: General Advice from my Friends

I asked around for any additional advice people wanted to add, and here's what some people had to say:

so: there's gonna be multiple versions of gerry that you'll be able to interact with anytime, regardless of what point in the timeline the blog is currently in. there’s timeline gerrys, and there’s default gerry.

default gerry falls under the tag archivist gerry. basic but i’m not about to replace all of his tags w/ default gerry because that’s a lotta posts. anyway, default gerry is timeline-less, dealing with the fears and doing his own thing gerry. just the same guy you guys have been interacting with pre-pause. able to take in spoilers, just going along with stuff. he's the one that, if there's no specifications about which gerry you're talking to, will be talking to you. thus, default gerry!

timeline gerrys are a part of the canon, ongoing overarching plot for this au. they’re part of the timeline, which is why they’re timeline gerrys :)

s1 gerry falls under the tag the unwanted continuation. called this because in this au, gerry was never meant to survive the cancer but was “saved” by elias so he could become the archivist. he also very much did not want this, so. it’s an unwanted continuation :D anyway, this gerry’s going to be a lot more sick of shit than default gerry. he will also have canon plotline stuff going on, so stick around for that!

for anyone who has interacted with gerry before the pause (5/14/2025): this one has not met any of you yet. do with that what you will :3

there will be other timeline gerrys in the future, for different seasons and whatnot. stay tuned for that :)

when interacting, please specify which gerry you are about to interact with.

one way you can do this by leaving a small note at the end of an ask. for example:

“hey how’s archiving going

(for *insert version of gerry here*)”

when using this method, you can either specify with the version (eg. default gerry, s1 gerry), the tag used for that gerry (eg. archivist gerry, the unwanted continuation), or, in some cases, a point in the timeline (eg. post *insert event that happened*)

another method is to mention something specific that happened to a gerry within the ask. for example:

“why did you glitterbomb elias on april fools??”

this one is specific to default gerry, since no other gerry has glitterbombed elias on april fools. both this method and the previous can be used simultaneously. i would prefer if you use the first method since it’s more specific, but using the second is fine. if you think of other methods, let me know! hope this makes sense :)

if your ask is not specified, it will automatically go to default gerry.

HOWEVER: the only exception for not is if there is an ongoing huge lore event, such as a season finale. i will specify that there is an ongoing lore event at the top of this post in large text. also, during the event, all asks or interactions specified for other gerrys will likely be ignored until after the event is completed.

NO ONE IS ALLOWED TO GIVE ANY TIMELINE GERRY SPOILERS. this includes shit like "jonah is in elias' body", "the web is planning on spreading to other universes", "leitner in tunnels", "the apocalypse can't succeed", “____ got not!them'd" (unsure if that'll still be the case), etc. if anyone tries to tell him what's up, even if it is specified towards a specific gerry, it'll either be deleted or immediately go to default gerry. the only exceptions are if the asks are intended not to be taken seriously (eg. that one time when an anon was like "GERRY THAT'S NOT SASHA (gets dragged away screaming)"), or if that event has already been covered.

Fandom theory:

Most fans do not like engaging with female characters because, deep down, they haven't worked on a bias they hold in favour of male characters and against female characters. Some even view them as competition. They view female characters as obstacles and people in the way of their ships instead of their actual characters, or even what they could have been. It is why they often disengage, hate, or flanderise female characters.

It is also why they are able to see the potential of male side characters who appear for few scenes and second, but treat canon, main female interests or deurogatonists as if they never existsed or like the worst female characters to ever exist. They build such a negative rapport of them and make it seem as if they were a big villain (news flash: they are traumatised individual).

This got long, so I'm putting it beneath a read more.

yes, for sure. I mean, the other options are either that the majority of media does just have awful/boring/flat women characters, or that women are just innately awful/boring/flat, and neither of those are true. In some media franchises, maybe accurate. But as a large-scale pattern?? Come on.

Yes. Fandom is very ship-heavy, and there is a tendency to sideline any potentially romantic competition (whether to enable a m/m pairing or to ship an OC). Ye olde Supernatural fandom was a biiig example of this lol, BBC Sherlock too. This line of thought opens up a whole other can of worms, of course, because that alone shouldn't automatically favor men -- every source but one* that I could find showed that while fandom is predominantly women, it's not predominantly straight women. We should be shipping everybody with everybody, by all rights, but every fandom-popularity metric (AO3 stats, Tumblr year in review, literally just scrolling through tags) does not reflect that at all.

(And honestly, even if it was all straight women in fandom, the whole 'it's all straight women, of course they'll focus on hot guys' excuse still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Media and culture popular with straight men isn't often about women; not from the top and not from the audience. Men, on a societal level, are expected to read and think and play games and write about men; and they do. Consider stereotypical nerd culture -- a comic convention, a game store, an early D&D campaign -- and, yeah, female characters like Lara Croft and Catwoman were there, but by and large it was men interacting with men about men. So it feels gross when that's tossed out as an explanation, as if it's reasonable for women-heavy spaces to also revolve around men and only men.)

It's not a one note issue, though, and I don't think it's all shipping. Again, lay opinions, but I've seen a lot of rhetoric basically saying: male characters are more fun to interact and play with because they offer a sense of space, and with that, emotional safety. Bodies/body shape, emotions (and how others perceive yours), relationship dynamics, pregnancy and families...topics that can feel very loaded when applied to a woman can become more manageable when packaged in a (cis/conventional) male character.

I do think Astarion was a shoe-in for Tumblr Sexyman anyway, but his themes of being trapped and abused clearly resonate with people, too. It's not all shallow. And while Shadowheart (and Karlach, and Minthara, and others) offers very similar themes, and a similar sense of catharsis when she stands up to her abuser...she's also a woman. Maybe she hits too close to home. Maybe you can't stop comparing yourself to her (which, as a woman, you've been trained to do basically since birth. I struggle with this a lot tbh, it is hard). Maybe she presses on whatever biases and issues you have inside. Whatever the reason, it's easier for some people to work through issues via a masculine or male character and sidestep those other issues.

So like, in that sense, I don't blame people for saying if I pay attention to Orin as well then I might think about why I like her less than Gortash, and then I might realize it's because I am unhappy with myself, or because I dislike my status as a woman in society for x reason, and that hurts and it's hard. fuck this, I want to sympathize with Gortash only. I'm not here to hurt and do hard work, I want to reblog cool art and write drama. but like ! this still sucks. It's a reasonable reason, but not exactly a good one. It's just capping the lid and saying mm, not dealing with that.

And I want to make very clear that I'm not saying girls should only care about girl characters because we have super special girly issues that can only be solved by writing fanfics about Minthara not Halsin because Halsin is a yucky boy. I'm trying to say: many women hold other women, including themselves and fictional characters, to unfair standards, or hold internal prejudice against them for sexist reasons, and turn to male characters for safe catharsis instead. This is understandable, but not healthy.

(Or they see any/all women characters as a Threat to their Hawke's adoration of Anders. Similar bias but less understandable/sympathetic, super annoying.)

*and that study is from 2008 (older than some tumblr users now) with only 3400 participants; we can contrast this information with centrelumina's much larger and more recent survey.

Challenge/contest with a prize (spread the word y'all)

Okay, since there were some people interested, I announce a little contest for my fellow incest shippers.

Rules:

You must write about an incest or incest-adjacent ship that hasn't been featured on this blog. But, since I don't post about parentcest, grandparentcest and selfcest at all, it can't be a ship of these categories either. Don't have anything against it, just thought it would be fair. So bring on your unpopular ships ^^ You can check if your ship has been mentioned or not, by search. Try inputting characters' names or the media's title. Or you can just ask me and I'll say if this ship has been mentioned or not.

You must write an introduction to the ship, where it's made clear who they are and why do you ship them. Whether you include spoilers or not is your decision, but I'd prefer if you did go in depth and at least briefly described your ship's canon interactions.

Non blood-related ships are allowed, but fauxcest (think they're related but are not) isn't. And, just my personal preference, I can't stop you, of course, but I would really like to hear about blood-related ships more. AU ships, OC x canon, selfships etc. are also not allowed! I don’t see many Murdle OCs, but I have seen a few, and for some reason, most of the ones I’ve seen are siblings of Irratino. Do what you want, of course, but I personally have always seen Irratino as an only child.

Logico, on the other hand…

This is Cerebra! Logico’s older sister by six years, came out absolutely GORGEOUS in the art, like I’m genuinely shocked at how good she looks. Maybe I’m a competent artist after all :P

Artist commentary (and some stuff about the character) under the cut!

Okay so the eyebrows were a must. It’s a family thing. Even if drawing actual eyebrows than just putting down two lines and going “done”. Similarly, she and Logico share hair color, eye color, and the shape of their noses. And also a general annoyance for whatever situations they find themselves in :P

Her overall appearance is very much leaning into practicality. Short hair (which came out very nice if I do say so myself), jacket, jeans…and the bookbag. Fun fact: I like to design my characters in Gacha Life 2 (yes, cringe, whatever) before I properly draw them, and when I was designing Cerebra, I gave her the bag and realized “…holy CRAP that’s perfect.” So, uh, yeah. Plain colors, because…well, if you want someone who stands out, Logico’s family ain’t the right place to look :P

As you can probably tell, Cerebra and Logico are alike in a lot of ways. They’re both smart, they’re both practical, they’re both organized, they both really don’t like social interaction. But where in my mind, Logico’s dislike for people is born of social anxiety and a fear of judgment and humiliation, Cerebra just…doesn’t find socializing worth her time. That’s time that could be spent on other, more useful things. She has very high standards for both herself and the world around her, and is quick to lose patience with anyone who doesn’t meet those standards. She has a much easier time showing her emotions than Logico does…but those emotions tend to be some flavor of annoyance.

Deep down, part of Cerebra does genuinely want to be included. But…it’s hard, you know? It’s hard to tamp down on what she wants to say and get people to like her. So she distances herself from other people, other people distance themselves from her, and she acts like it doesn’t bother her.

Her relationship with her brother is…kinda awkward; they weren’t particularly close as kids, Cerebra skipped town the second she graduated high school, Logico skipped town the second he was out of college, and neither have actually seen or spoken to each other in literal years. Oh, believe me, as children, Logico wanted to be close to his sister like any other younger sibling would. But, well…their parents worked long hours and late nights, considered Cerebra responsible for Logico whenever they couldn’t be, and she…kind of resented that? And that led Logico to think she resented him (and maybe part of her did, a little), an impression not at all helped by her moving out basically the second she was legally allowed to. Hence, an awkward, distant relationship if they ever DO speak again, even as adults.

…did I just write paragraphs worth of info on my OC relative of a canon character? Like a teen from Ye Olde Dayes of fandom? Yes, yes I did :P

He fought alongside the others in the War and was Romantically interested in Capitano, the two shared a couple of moments alone and He is also aware of how Capitano looks like below the Helmet. Capitano tried to distance himself so he wont hurt the Boy but it was without success, Capitano was also interested in the Boy but before the two could get any Closer it was already time for Capitano to give his Life instead of Mavuika.

Khriz's race? I mean..he is a clone of Chris so he's technically white, though he doesn't have a race because hes a robot obviously so can change races when he morphs, if you make his human form black, asian, etc then...i guess im not stopping you really

4. Can i make redesigns of the characters for fanart?

I mean...sure i guess, for Khriz in his "human" form he does not have a "canon" appearance because he is a robot clone and his human look is what he imagines he'd look like, you can make him more conventionally attractive or something because he doesn't have..like i said, a canon human design..though, it'll be odd seeing him "attractive" than just scary or unnerving..

5. Can i ship the characters?

..depends, for Chris x Khriz that is a no, Khriz sees him as a brother figure but also a friend, Khriz x Zach? Im killing you, Chris x Zach get out of my office, any ship between Zach that isn't Gourmand you're out, other ships im chill or atleast okay with like...koki x aviva, uhhhh jimmy x his controller, etc...crackships???
