your sweaty hands could not be gripping the steering wheel any harder. you wouldn’t call yourself “super shy” but when it comes to a whole new community of people, teenagers, hell yeah you are.

you had to move exactly at the middle of the year due to your mom’s work. they offered her double the salary at the other side of the city, who was she to say no to that? although you were going to miss your friends and the overall environment of your old home, you couldn’t just tell your mom ‘no’, either way her decisions are final.

you just got here two days ago, and to be honest, it wasn’t that bad. the worst thing so far is the fact that the nearest shopping center was 30 minutes away but you’ll live.

you didn’t except your first day of school to be so nerve-wracking. surely you’ll make some friends but who knows what people are like here. eventually, you saw the big navy blue sign with your school’s name on it. it was an averagely big school, bigger than your old one, which also meant more people.

suddenly the shower stopped running, making heeseung hurry and exit the locker room.

the shower felt too good, you think you spent more time that you anticipated to. as you exited the shower tiles, you looked around for your clothes, which you remember clearly leaving them in the bench closest to the shower. you looked around the whole locker room, hoping you were wrong and placed them elsewhere. unfortunately, you couldn’t even find your damn socks.

your biggest fear has come true. you’re now naked, nothing but a towel covering you, this was more than just humiliating. you felt sad, mad, angry, embarrassed all at once. they’ve been stolen for sure, and you were more than sure on who did it.

grabbing your phone you called Isa, to see if she could help you somehow. and she indeed did. bringing you some spare clothes she had. thankfully, you always bring extra underwear since situations like these could happen. you just had to wait for isa for the clothes, yet the five minutes she took felt like five hours. unfortunately, passing period is over, meaning some students are coming in the locker room to change.

many of them just straight up stared at you. giving you weird looks as to why you were pretty much naked in the middle of the locker room, but none had the guts to ask you.

you wished the ground would just swallow you whole. lee heeseung won’t hear the end of it.

“LEE HEESEUNG!” you yelled across the field. he and his friends were siting down eating lunch outside when you spotted him after trying to find him after the stunt he just pulled.

Do you have any advice for continuing to use your planner once you start? I'm going to be starting one for the first time soon, but I worry I'll have issues sticking to it even if it helps.

it might not be the advice you want, but if your planner doesnt 'stick' theres usually a few reasons (at least that ive found) as to why-

the planner doesnt actually help you remember the things youre supposed to. i prefer very specific, small lists (so i like having food, work tasks, exercise/self care and chores separate) where a lot of planners ive found just give you one big block for the day. when i used those, i would manually separate the lists, usually run out of space, and then give up and not maintain using it.

its not convenient to use! either the size is too clunky, the pages are not pleasant to write on/bleed and become illegible, or - what ive found happens to people a LOT - they focus on making their planner so pretty they take forever to actually write stuff down. your planner is supposed to be a tool to help you, so taking care of it is important, but for functionality sake... it ISNT supposed to be a journal. you dont have to treat it so delicately youre afraid to make mistakes or write too sloppily

when are you planning/writing in it? i write one or two important tasks for the next day as im going to bed, and then add the rest the morning after when i see how im feeling. this makes it so im not using my phone right when i wake up or before i go to bed too, which ive found puts me in a lot better/productive of a mood...

theres more reasons, but ultimately it comes down to 'is it convenient?' 'is it pleasant?'. trying to form habits you resist naturally is much more difficult than trying to find things that are small adjustments, if you try to change everything about yourself all at once, you'll very likely just fall flat! if the planner you have now isnt working... you might just need to be pickier about which one you get. the one i have now was 5 dollars, but i got it because it had the kind of formatting i was specifically looking for.

caine is honestly really good about keeping you on track when theres a task at hand. i dont know about you, but i tend to wander about when im working on something; to check on something else repeatedly then coming back to what needs to be done and just go back and forth.(shit im even doing it now, the getting up and checking on things thing even though i know the thing is fine/complete) i like to think that caine would be pretty okay at making sure you get the thing you need/want to do done! i dont think theres meds in the digital world, i mean yeah sure you can ask for them but since theyre digital theyre not going to actually. do anything. but lets say in a hypothetical au where this all takes place in the real world and caine is a real person, he would make sure you take them consistently and on time. honestly this hc isnt really part of the ask but; i generally like to think that caine likes to follow routines and schedules as closely as he can... maybe its the ringmaster thing since hes tasked with keeping everything running but... shrugs

very supportive when you make a small mistake in something (like this is just a general thing, though) and isnt too obnoxious with trying to hold or regain your attention is something happens to the side and steals it away. very patient and polite with it, i think

honestly he might start to mimic your stims and fidgets! he doesnt mean to mock you, no i just think he would start to reflect your actions after spending most of his time around you to make sure you're okay! while caine keeps you on track, kinger is likely to go with you when you wander off to check/do something else. really unless its something time sensitive or really important is when hes going to start outwardly reassuring you that the other thing is fine. honestly, in an au with the real world i was originally going to say he would have a chance of forgetting to help remind you/ask if you took your meds (if you take them) but i think he would take stuff like that way too seriously to even DARE forget. like yeah sure you're not going to d1e if you forget to take them for a single day but still. he'd probably be like this with any meds tbh, so if you're prone to forgetting youll be fine as long as you have kinger around! gibes you pillows for fidget stuff, if you are feeling restless. or perhaps even goes on a walk with you around the circus grounds. like idk about yall, or if this is something completely unrelated, but my legs HURT when i sit too still. like down to the bone, if i dont get up every now and then its agony; sleeping is hell and on days its worse than others (like im talking sometimes i need to be in near constant movement) (also jerky arms and legs) (anyways)

also very polite with returning your attention to where it needs to be but honestly given that kinger himself is shown to space out at least twice in the pilot i think sometimes you guys both get side tracked and struggle to remember and/or get back into the flow of what you were originally doing

okay, so i just finished re-reading Any Way the Wind Blows and this feels so blatant as to be smacking me in the face: simon is disabled.

now, the reason why that makes itself even clearer in this book than in wayward son (where he, of course, also has the wings + tail) is because simon is once again in the world of mages - despite doing his best to leave it behind. compared to wayward son, where hes basically and literally in the wild west. where theres magical beings everywhere, where simon practically fits in because he is one.

but ill get back to that.

ive seen a lot of really interesting points about what simon's wings represent and mean, and i'm not disagreeing with those. but in a very literal sense, they are a disability.

think about it like this: the world of mages (and Normals) is not built for humanoids who have giant webbed wings and a tail. simon constantly struggles with controlling these limbs, and their size makes it ten times harder. spaces are too small, furniture and objects are broken when he spreads them, and many a shirt or jacket are ruined.

he struggles to find a good way to deal with this - spell them away? wear them out by cutting holes in things? fold them extremely painfully into his shirt? even though this last one is treated like a solution for a little while, its far from ideal. who is simon doing this for? himself, or everyone around him? yes, of course Normals cant see them. and yeah, hes expressed discomfort about baz and penny spelling them hidden. but thats not the point. even with this botch job of a way to "wear" his wings, which succeeds at hiding them from Normals, simon still states a couple times that he knows people stare at him and his seeming hunchback. i mean, thats blatant.

(he eventually, with shepard's help, realizes a good way to work around this - zippers or buckles on shirtbacks - which very much feels like an aha! disability aid moment)

im not saying disability is based in how people look at you, or it only being a societal thing. (as in, when he wasnt in the world of mages, he wasnt suddenly 'not disabled at all') disability is a huge spectrum. but those things absolutely can be a part of the disabled experience.

but all of that doesnt even get to my main point: simon has no magic anymore. and in the world of mages, thats a huge deal. magic is like living and breathing, especially for baz and penny. its not something they question or have to worry about not being able to call upon. hell, even before simon lost his magic he was disabled, just to a different extent.

before awtwb, we dont hear much about mages whose magic is weak. but they come to the forefront now - which just solidifies that solid magical ability = able bodiedness.

smith is promising a miracle cure. a cure. think of it like bullshit orgs such as aut!sm spe@ks, wanting to "cure" autism - he wants to cure people. (and hes just as full of shit) why? because weak magic is seen as a disease, a problem, even subhuman.

take daphne, baz's stepmom. her quality of life is fine, great. her weaker magic doesnt seem to put her at a disadvantage. she manages her disability well. but in comparison to the norm, to what is expected of the average mage, shes got nothing. less than nothing. she feels shame over what she cant do.

smith's case becomes even more blatant when we see, at the end of awtwb, that he wants to essentially cull weak magicians. that they're holding back society. that theyre better off as powerless as Normals - who are blatantly seen as subhuman - than as weak mages. much like how ableist rhetoric puts forward that disability is a fate worse than death.

which brings us back to simon. he insists hes a Normal, now or always has been. baz insists hes the most powerful magician to exist. both of them are wrong.

and right. and right and wrong.

simon is some third thing - not a mage, not a Normal. akin to how disability is its own minority aside from race or ethnicity he has a foot in each world, and he always has. but now he cant achieve blending into either.

this is why the increasing presence and humanization of other magical beings beside mages is so important (thank you shephard!) how mages tend to seem magical beings is very ableist. theyre subhuman, theyre not to be trusted, theyre freaks, theyre dirty, etc. except oops, how can you keep thinking that penny, when this very nice one works at a cafe and helped you translate shephard's engagement terms?

even baz and the events of wayward son play into this - yeah, some vampires are horrible people. but plenty, like baz, are just people. with a range of experiences and morals and ways of living life. (take nicodemus) (i could make a point about how simon's stalwart acceptance of baz's vampirism helps baz comes to terms with it and how this is also super disability coded, but thats another essay)

in the beginning of awtwb, he decides to go to the extreme opposite of his chosen one powered life - to live as a Normal, and the second step (after cutting himself off from baz and penny) is getting his wings removed.

except he cant do it. and even having his wings touched is horribly uncomfortable. now, this partly has to do with how much theyre sensual parts of his body - same as his tail. but its also, separately, very intimate. theyre treated very clinically, like a fascinating specimen to pore over. im not trying to give niamh shit here, just saying what i saw.

but theyre part of him. people with disabilities often deal with being stared at and poked and prodded by the medical field (if theyre not ignored or waved off. maybe both.). even every day folks feel the right to touch disabled folks, or their mobility aids.

for a lot of people, mobility aids are a part of them - its like a stranger touching your face and thinking theyre doing you a favor. when instead theyre being weird as fuck.

simon's status as previous chosen one even plays into this sort of thing - people see him more as a figurehead, for what he can and cant do (including his wings!) than a person. hes a tragedy, hes a hero. hes inspirational, hes to be pitied. sound familiar?

the end of awtwb doesnt spell out whether simon ends up deciding to keep his wings (frustratingly). but they spell out that he would absolutely would, in my opinion.

simon increasingly treats them as a natural extension of his body. think of the scene where he flies about the watford goats. how he expresses his feelings with his wings and tail. and of course, how he learns to let baz loves each and every part of him: including his dragon limbs.

baz loves him, and loves them, not in a fetishistic way, but because its simon, and he loves everything simon is. not just what he represents or can or cant do.

The reason for his name is by the fact that (in my head canon or lore) he came from a bunch of fallen space star dust, hence why he likes space so much and staring at the stars, he also has some sort of ice magic i havent fully fleshed out yet, one thing i can say tho is that when he sneezes, he does it softly and he puffs out small ice snowflakes and can freeze things he touches he is also supposed to wear glasses like me but i suck at drawing those and forgot to include them here anyway so

He is very shy, doesnt talk much but is very protective of his very close friends and would do anything to protect them and make sure they're safe, he is a femboy (of course), enjoys listening to calm relaxing music and high octane electronic music at times, is a gamer, likes cuddling up in bed and i think that's it

I enjoy drawing obviously, but i also enjoy cooking stuff and origami, i play a lot of roblox usually to pass time but a game i really got into is "Voices of the Void" i really recommend but it's not for everyone, i like the game's concept and how detailed the space is there. For some reason, a lot of the time i am cold, my hands, feet, nose and limbs overall are very cold which is why i thought about giving my oc some ice magic thing. I am taken, in a relationship with my cutie bunny bf, and my sexuality is bisexual. IM MOVED INTO MY NEW SPOT!!! im already soooo much happier here, my room mate is very similar to me in that she doesnt really like small-talk, so we just do our own thing which is ideal for me. i dont want to have a room mate who is my best friend ever, who hangs out in my room and talks to me for hours, i just want to coexist!!! and thats how it's been so far which is honestly such a sigh of relief. my room is dramatically larger than where i was before, and the space is overall better maintained and a lot cleaner. i'm really close to all of the things i need, and im really close to a subway station, so i can get anywhere very easily. im still unpacking but i'm getting close to the end!!!! the move actually went so smoothly, it only took 3 hours!! thats the fastest ive ever moved before. also all of my things actually fit in my new room!!!! so so exciting. i'm so happy that i'll be a lot more organized here, and my mind feels so much lighter. i have a much easier time falling asleep here as well, likely because i didnt trust my other room mates so i seldom felt secure enough to fully drift off. i'm very happy so far!!! im hoping 2024 keeps this energy, but i'm not going to be disappointed if something goes wrong. i expect the worst, and hope for the best!!

How i made xenos nails!!

Materials

-worbla

-2mm eva foam

-scissors

-heat gun

-soldering iron (technically optional but helps A LOT)

-gesso (i used regular gesso, but if you can id buy heavy body gesso)

-P400+P600 sand paper

-acyrlic paint (just silver is ok, but black will help)

-white gloves

-hot glue

PART 1- forming the base

This part is VERY hard to explain so hopefully the diagram helps- ill explain every step here

Finger tips

1. Cut out a piece of worbla thats double the length of the finger tip you want + a little extra.

2. Heat it slightly and fold that piece of worbla in half around your finger.

3. Form it slightly around your finger, leaving a little extra space for the glove material, then cut it out with good scissors. (NOTE- if you try to form it on your finger while wearing gloves, the worbla MAY stick to the gloves. Id recommend just doing it on your bare finger)

4. Heat it up again until its very soft and round out the shape, making sure the sides stick together. If its too small when you test fit it around the glove, try to push out the walls a bit more.

Nails

Watch this video before starting this part-

1. Find a good length for your nails- mine are approx. 3 inches. Make a template and then cut the shape out of eva foam.

2. Cut out TWO pieces of worbla a little bigger then the nail strip and heat one up, sticky side up (the sticky side is shiny). Put the eva foam strip in the middle. Heat up the second piece of worbla and put it on top, sandwiching the eva foam.

3. Score all around the eva strip then cut AS CLOSE as possible to the edge.

Attaching the pieces

1. Heat up the finger tip and half of the nail. Attach the nail to the finger tip while wearing it to make sure it doesnt cave in. Use a picture from the manga as reference while doing this part

2. Once again, using a manga reference, use scrap worbla to fill out the sides and smooth everything down. This is the part where you can use a soldering iron to smooth everything out- be careful though, because you can easily burn the worbla.

2.5. I forgot to make a diagram but dont forget to curve the nails! I used a little metal dome to get a consistent curve for all of them.

3. Make little worbla balls, flatten them with something flat, then attach them to the nails while still hot.

Now repeat ALL these steps for all 10 nails! Yay!

PART 2- priming

For priming i used regular gesso because I was impatient, but if you have plenty of time I recommend heavy body gesso. It took me 12 layers to get everything decently smooth, but if you used heavy body it would probably take 3-5 layers.

I also used floral foam, craft sticks, and sticky tack for my painting setup- if you can think of a better method without sticky tack id recommend trying something else- just because i had to pick out the sticky tack with tweezers, and it took forever lol

Two things to note about gesso-

1. It doesnt self level so you need to sand it smooth

2. DO NOT DRY SAND!! Always wet sand gesso

My exact steps were this-

4 layers of gesso -> sand with P400 -> 4 layers of gesso -> sand with P400 -> 4 layers of gesso -> sand with P600

This part is very time consuming if you use regular gesso, but its definitely worth it for the smooth finish.

PART 3- painting

Before adding silver, I threw down a quick matte black layer. It tends to make metals look much better and it wont take long to dry, so I highly recommend it.

For the silver, i used decoart extreme sheen in silver, which i highly recommend. Relatively cheap and can be found in any craft store

Id also recommend having all your brush strokes go vertically if you can- it looks much cleaner.

PART 4 (final part)- attachment

I used a pair of white gloves i bought a while back at spirit halloween, but you can make them or buy them- doesnt matter as long as you like them.

This part is kinda dumb but I genuinely dont know if theres a better method… i put hot glue in the nails, let it cool for a couple of seconds, then put them ON MY FINGERS while wearing the gloves. It gets you the best fit possible but also burns a little so watch out.

ill probably delete this later but i feel like i always see in fics where both of the blight parents are either somewhat abusive or very distant from amity/the twins. maybe im just looking in the wrong places but i always have this one thought inside of me, a craving if you will... of a fic where instead of them being that way- its amity and alador slowly rebuilding their relationship as parent&adult/teenage child.

because IN MY OPINION (because godforbid people have those on here /lh) i do NOT view alador as that. in my head he is in a small little gray area where odalia was abusive and horrible but he just... was in a space of being trapped.

and that might just be me projecting my own relationship with my dad in a way because for years we were in a place where we would see one another but be super distant. i feel like alador IS that way. not in a sense where he doesnt want to be, but in a way where he doesn't understand how to approach amity- because he in fact doesnt KNOW her apart from how odalia had their relationship. which as we know was of course highly toxic and not even a bit of warmth.

for so often i see odalia and him being horrible people, but i dont ever see a story of an aftermath of odalia being the toxic one and amity finally getting away as an adult and finally being herself. maybe thats my own projection but god as a child of divorce there was a lot of slowly pacing around one another cautiously because me and my dad didnt understand how to approach the other!!

but despite this alador still shows up to every event amity has. he shows up to EVERYTHING. and not in a superiority way that odalia was because of the blight name and all, but in a sense of "i know you like this thing and i want to support you so ill be here to try"

and odalia being distant as hell. you cannot tell me that if this was a human au that she would be the parent to never show up for school functions. yk and growing up its really never discussed how damaging it is to not have your parents there like that- well... kinda imo. but hes always showing up because HES TRYING. and like... he doesnt understand how to approach her because he doesnt know who she is, just the same as he doesnt understand who HE is since all hes known is what odalia had him be. but he KNOWS thats not him. he knows hes a different person, because HE DOESNT WANT TO BE HER.

did you want to know my opinions on the most commonly available "large" (around 30x20 inch) freestanding flight cages? no! but here they are

(note - i have not owned basically any of these. this is based only on appearances so far; in general the average reviews for all of these are the same so make of that what you will)

if you google search "flight cage" or "large flight cage" or similar you will get a lot of options like these

they are perfectly functional, more affordable, and slightly more spacious IF your bird will use the bottom portion. the first one appears to be the cage i have, i dont remember exactly because it was around 10 years ago. but theyre all more or less the same thing: the most basic construction, no extra frame for the door, no designated food and water dish spots. possibly not sturdy or secure enough for a larger or escape artist bird but certainly great for budgies or finches or other very small birds. there are many other variants of these.

the next kind you will see a lot of is basically the same shape as the above, but with a sturdier frame and single (or double) framed door(s) with lock. there are many many similar to this and i assume theyre great besides still not having convenient access to food cups (if you care about this). here's this one

then there are the playtop and dometop cages from a&e (x, x, x, x) and prevue (x, x, x). both companies have one of each and they have some differences. as seen in my links, you can also find the identical cage under other "brands." all of them have designated feed doors and removable seed guards (lol) as well as overall what appears to be very sturdy construction, so would be better for slightly larger or more escape oriented individuals.

a thing i dislike about ALL these is that they dont have a shelf/dont even have space for one in the case of the prevue cages. the a&e cages i dislike that the door is so tall and narrow, especially on the playtop version which has nowhere to attach perches above or below the door. and the prevue cages have 3/4ths inch bar spacing (unlike half inch or 5/8ths like most of these) which limits how small of a bird you can put in them. these are also generally very pricy just to look nice, which they do, but not enough to make up for their potential shortcomings in my opinion.

my final two options are also from a&e! the one i was considering for the longest and almost bought is the "charlonda" from wayfair (i found this cage on the a&e website but not for sale under the a&e name from anywhere i trusted). the other is the elegant top flight cage (a name sometimes shared with the first one i mentioned), which is much more widely available as an a&e cage, including from chewy.com and also wayfair.

what i like about the "charlonda" is what appears to me to be better designed food cup doors than the rest of these and all horizontal bars (which is rare to see and better for any bird with reduced mobility). i like both of these for looking stylish but still having a flat top that you can set things on and not being overly complicated. i think i have decided to go with the second one because i am changing my mind about wanting the horizontal bars at the last minute, and think it looks a bit less cluttered for having the food doors positioned differently. A NOTE about this one: the "decorative gaps" around the doors are 3/4ths of an inch (so it says) even though the rest of the bar spacing is half inch. so this one wont work for smaller birds. the "charlonda" doesnt have these gaps.

whats the status on the kittys

They are doing well. They are definetely entering their puberty stage (i think they are around 7 months old i want to say?) Theyve gotten bigger and play very rough with each other and i often worry that theyre hurting each other when theyre playing. Archie (the gray one) is especially rough and likes to pin down and bite the back of Maxie's neck until he cries which makes me so sad i always split them apart but it seems thats part of their game?? Because Maxie doesnt usually fight back or hiss he just kind of. Takes it. Idk its apparently a way that cats show dominance which is not a very nice thing to do your brother. Archie also had very bad diarrhea a few months ago but with medicine he got better.(this is why his nickname is The Shitter. Maxie is The Pisser because he pees funny) He still occasionally gets diarrhea despite me cycling pretty consistently through the same foods.. and its not consistent enough for me to give him medicine for it because he hates it. Def something ill bring up when i take them to get checked out and fixed. Hes also gotten a lot cuddlier as of late lol like he still mostly keeps to himself and hides under a chair or the bed during the day but whenever he comes out he wants allllll the attention

I also feel a little bad sometimes that i live in such a small apartment i really would like them to have more space to run around and stretch their legs but they dont seem to mind. I think they sleep most of the time im not home during the day and when I am home is when they get silly and start playing (usually this is at night when im trying to go to bed and they decide its time to battle to the Death on the windowsill directly above my bed. I still have a cut on my nose from when one of them fell on me last week😭) They are absolute terrors but i love them with all my heart and they always come say hi when i wake up in the morning (insert that super loud laughing dog audio meme)

I have been meaning to get around to bringing them with me on walks to the park in the kitty backpack i got for them because i think it would be an enriching experience for them and they can get out of my tiny stuffy apartment prison but they seem to get so stressed out when i try to it breaks my heart. • Not only does he have his headaches, but neck pains as well as phantom limb pain

• Used to have full moth wings but after a fight with Heart, they were too torn up to use. He still has them, but they're small and he hides them under his jacket. (also why they rarely take its jacket off)

• His hair gets brighter if hes being more (rarely) emotional. (Happier, angrier, excited etc.) The rarer times when he gets startled, his hair goes off like a mini flashbang

• When his emotions are high enough, small sparks will shoot out from his hair

• Also if hes especially pissed off or depressed, it's voice will glitch and stutter way more (like some moments in like Storm and a Spring or TME)

• Has more moth traits but always tries to hide them. He has small antennas but hides them in his hair, has moth fluff on his neck but shaves it so it doesn't grow out etc. Also loves light like a moth but can control himself to not like...bang his head into a lamp post (unless hes like really tired or drunk or something? (heart once had a laser pointer and mind attack it like a cat))

• I dont have a set idea on how Heart went blind. But if it was Minds doing (especially if he used Souls trident), I could see Souls punishment resulting in Mind getting the robot limbs. That or Soul resulted in Mind needing the voice modulator.

• Has a tear on their sleeve from Hearts gunshot

• Cable tail that looks like a Nintendo 64 controller cable. Cause 1. Its an electric tail and 2. CJ (& me) likes LoZ Majoras Mask, which in an N64 game.

• Him and Heart are the same height but Soul is slightly taller. Heart doesn't mind it (nor can he tell) but Mind is slightly annoyed at that so he wears heels and heeled boots to be tall or as tall as Soul.

not everyone is a dragon! there are also humans and half-dragons in their world. they have a pretty low global population in comparison to others but theyre not rare per se. (not sure if or how many other fantasy races there are, havent really thought about it)

by specialties im guessing you mean skills/elemental powers? they arent 100% set in stone yet for everyone but for the main cast:

atem: [based on slifer] a god-class dragon, his domain are the skies and he feels most at home there. he can control the weather in his region, both intentionally and subconsciously (cue weird weather patterns when hes going through stuff). atems element is lightning but he can manipulate water and air pressure to a minor degree too!

yugi: [based on gandora] well-meaning but unintentionally destructive. his signature rays at full power can vaporize anything but require an insane amount of energy, so he only uses it as a last resort move since he will pass out right after. i affectionately call him a little nuke.

ryou: [based on CoH/angels] doesnt really have an element but hes venomous. he can either spit his venom like a cobra or turn it into pressurized steam. in low concentration it will make you trip balls and/or paralyze you but a high dosage will grant you a slow and painful death. hes also well-versed in shady magic.

amir: [based on ra] hes a bit of an anomaly, since hes an artificial god-class dragon. his element is fire(?), at his strongest capable of making a small sun to collapse into a black hole. amir can also super heat his surroundings, which is how he scorched half of the continent when he escaped containment... he also grows obsidian-like crystals on his body that he uses for both offense and defense.

malik: [based on ra] a past(?) god-class dragon, his element is true pure light that he can turn into weapons or use to set things on fire. he doesnt use his element often since its taxing and triggers a lot of old traumas. he prefers to use his "superior tactical knowledge" and "overwhelming charisma", to uh... various levels of success.

bakhura: [based on diabound] born non-elemental but developed the ability to shoot concentrated plasma out of spite and pure unadulterated wrath. summoned satan and wiped out a whole kingdom. fought god and tied. managed to survive the following: getting shot out of the sky (multiple times), a few mile drop with broken wings, being impaled and then sealed away in a magical prison for a very long time. i think that counts as a special skill.

i will draw a proper size comparison chart for both their humanoid and dragon forms at one point. im still working out their heights so i cant give you any exact measurements for the humanoid forms

as for the dragon forms i can give estimates!

in that one drawing atem isnt even fully grown yet, he gets at least 4 times bigger. he was still a teen during the calamity!

amir is THE biggest dragon in this au tho, dwarfing even a full grown atem. he towers over mountains, literally. luckily hes incapable of shifting whenever he feels like it or the whole world wouldve been burnt to ash by now. he did once and half of the continent is now a glass desert.

malik wouldve come in second in terms of height if he could shift at all.

yugi is a few feet taller than bakhura. still on the short size for his species.

ryou is the smallest. hes just a bit shorter than bakhura.

as for the setting, its a mythical land! im still working on the lore and worldbuilding but continent where the main story takes place is inspired by ancient egypt! im trying to avoid the generic european medieval fantasy (and its tough sobs)

help me choose living room furniture!!!

so i was mocking up my living room and it turns out i have less space for couches than i hoped and there are just not that many love seat options that match the sleeper sofa i want this is so fucking sad...

but i still wanna be able to have seats for more than a few people so im trying to figure out which of these is best. i'd love input:

two notes:

other room is the kitchen so its full i just didnt bother putting anything there but the kitchen table

i want a tv stand but am not planning on getting one yet so the dimensions on that could be flexible if needed. same thing with a lamp. and some of these include a short bookcase for boardgames but thats experimental and i may not end up getting one.

this first one is very similar to how my old roommate had things set up so i know it works and i like it on an 'ease of walking from upstairs or the front door to kitchen' level

but also i kind of hate it because there are no ceiling lights on the living room side and there are no windows beyond that window behind the blue couch and the sliding glass door in the kitchen so with the tv there it made the whole space feel even darker than it does right now

that being said.........There Are Some Cons To Having a Mattress On The Floor :(

note that i said "mattress" specifically because thats honestly where the problem comes in, because there are many other different types of sleeping materials that can (and should!) be put on the floor for a floor sleeping arrangement, but mattresses Specifically (and uhh just to be clear, definition of mattress for this post is a bed/bed portion created with Fabric and filled with some kind of firm material as the guts) but like NOT TO SAY THAT IT'S THE WORST THING EVER LIKE full disclosure a good 65% of why i rag on luke having a palette bedframe (and later on just having it on the FLOOR) is cuz sometimes it just heals my heart to make fun of my fave. it's like how i'll always slander his blocky xmas partyland event sweater even if at this point he's definitely worn Worse Sweaters (like his mr butterfly kisses cards sweater....what WAS that) but making fun of the blocky xmas partyland sweater is just so much fun now that i cant let go of it

so this is subjective, it's wholly just something i think personally. but man not having a bedframe is nerfing one's self at a whole bunch of storage space!!!

in small spaces especially!! in smaller living spaces, maximizing space Vertically (shelves, bunk beds, raised types of structures, loft designs, etc) is a much more efficient way to go about making more space into Usable Space. and luke's original home, the third floor above his antique shop, is pretty cramped. the kitchen is right next to his bed and hes got a bunch of objects just strewn around on the floor and god god i wanna clean his room so bad because LUKE. WE CAN FIX THIS. THINGS DONT HAVE TO BE ON THE FLOOR AS A POTENTIAL TRIPPING HAZARD, BUT IF THE REASON THEYRE THERE IS CUZ OF A LACK OF STORAGE SPACE IVE GOT A SURPRISE FOR U........BEDFRAME! which leads to space Under the bed to use for storage or whatnot

can leave u more susceptible to dust (bcuz ur closer to the floor, where dust gets) and thus activate allergies. this can be avoided by regular cleaning of course but just be careful cuz yknow when u sweep the floor around bed, clean the bed right after too cuz who knows how much dust or whatnot had gotten stirred up and landed on the bed. n

i live in the philippines and the weather is often very humid and wet here and if where you are is also very humid then BEWARE BEWARE BED ON FLOOR MIGHT GET MOLD. mattresses are big chunks of usually absorbent material and if it's on the floor it is Not getting as ventilated as a bed on a bedframe (since air can pass under and around it easier) and if ur not checking ur mattress regularly, funky stuff can grow compleyely unbeknownst to u.

im no bed expert or whatever but based on my general knowledge and experience, what makes Mattresses not suited for the floor is the fact that theyre Chunks, and Chunks tend to absorb things around it and keep it inside to create all sorts of problems and evils. to battle that, Chunks generally should be elevated via bedframe just so they have more surface area to breathe instead of absorb.

so Chunks dont do great directly on the floor. but yknow what does? MATS!!!!! FLAT PLANES!!!!! examples!! banig (philippines), tatami (japan), and probably MANY MORE BUT THESE R THE ONLY TWO I CAN REMEMBER AT 5AM WHEN IM WRITING THIS RESPONSE

these r not Chunks these are Planes and also by virtue of being made from Dried Materials (palm leaves, rice straw, etc) and also built for asian climates (tend to be humid and wet for significant portions of time) theyre less likely to absorb and create problems. obviously theres still Upkeep and Cleaning involved but in general, yknow, still better

tldr: modern mattresses are not engineered for a bunch of the problems that the floor can pose. Mats Were Made For The FLoor so theyre Built To Withstand General Floor Problems. of course, every person will have different sleeping needs and sleeping problems to solve, so there is No Single Correct Way To Be Doing This, it depends on u and ur lifestyle and sleep-style. but also i just want luke to maximize his living space. let me in there i gotta clean his room plEASE PLEASE

random mental health recovery tips cause why not

 Keeping a diary of ur mood, energy levels etc (whatever it is that you would like to improve) and ALSO looking at how it coincides with ur menstural cycle if you have one, and also any events in ur life THIS WAY you can track patterns of ur mood and notice what helps and what doesnt etc

create/ designate safe spaces if you can- for example if you go to work and need to be alone and safe where will you go? designate spaces eg the toilet or outside. for example at school i have designated this very empty outdoor space for me thats always empty and has fresh air. in my old school I had designated a specific toilet that felt calming to me idk ADDITIONALLY if you have your own room or any spaces that are completely your own then do what you can to make that space feel calming and safe to you- if not find other areas that you can go to when you need a safe space and need to be calm and alone- for me I have a lot of outdoor spaces like isolated parts of parks and whatnot

panic ritual: this one is a random one but it helps me a lot- i have a list of 3-5 activities to do whenever I panic like a little ritual. this deffo doesnt work if ur having a panic attack but if ur just worrying and overthinking and feeling anxious its a good way to get ur mind off of things and get you doing something else. for example for me if i am at home i do some skincare and then i get some fruit or veg and chop them into tiny pieces which calms me down a lot and then i sit down and watch a comfort tv show or movie while I eat the tiny fruits- or I make a hot choc depends what I have in the fridge.

setting small goals in random stuff: for example setting goals in things outside of your paid work or academics- things that you are not at all required to be good at, for example fitness goals (such as run a 5k) or musical instrument goals like learning a new song on guitar or learning a new language for fun of picking up a new hobby like painting or knitting.- this generally increases ur confidence and makes you feel more capable when you achieve these goals but even if you dont achieve them, they dont matter a lot to your career so its not vital that you achieve them

protein- i never eat enough protein or even know how much of it i should eat so after some research you should basically eat your weight in kg multiplies by 0.75 and that should be how many grams you should eat daily- for example if you weigh 50kg you should eat roughly around 37.5g of protein per day. it gives you energy and stuff so its cool i guesss ALTHOUGH IF YOU DONT FEEL COMFY TRACKING THAT PLEASE DONT, THIS IS JUST A SUGGESTION ROUGHLY PLS DONT COUNT MACROS IF YOU DONT FEEL COMFY WITH IT

writing with "vibes" in mind is completely underrated tbh

ive thinking a lot about this bc ive playing a lot of games that use vibes to tell the story/to make gameplay moments stand out. and listen, i know games =\= books, but!!! i think it has merit.

under read more bc it got rambly. its just me wondering aloud about ways to write.

example 1: ffxiv, a fantasy mmorpg that relies HEAVILY on story. it's been out for more than 10 years, so the story is huuuuuuge (i spent like a month and a half just catching up when i started playing two years ago). there are callbacks to the base game in a expansion that came out 9 years after said base game. it makes the whole thing feel like a expertly drawn web of plotlines and characters... except that isn't that case at all. the writers have mentioned multiple times that things that happened in the third expansion (6 years in) weren't planned from the beginning. that is, they just threw paint at the wall back in the base game bc the colors (vibes) looked cool. they just had enough skill to make a painting out of it later.

i guess having a good grasp of your story's themes helps a lot with that, too, now that i think about it. it assures that the colors are at least complimentary when you are slinging them about at the start of the story.

example 2: destiny, which is a completely different game. destiny doesnt use story the same way ffxiv does, though it is important (somewhat)... but lore is where the vibes come in to play for destiny imo. they do so much with so little. still using the painting analogy, it's almost like negative space art - they fill in just enough to give you an idea of the figure but not nearly as much as you would need to discern the details. and still the world feels vast. most of the time you are shooting aliens while wielding space magic, but every weapon, gear, etc has its own lore piece, and whole plotlines/characters that never show up in game or in the main story can be told through them. it's basically just vibes - aesthetic, some character moments, letters/logs, etc. and it works! the world feels lived in, most of the characters are well defined and even though sometimes the main story kinda drags, there is enough to keep you interested.

(it kinda reminds me of how i write description, which i've talked about before, but for the lucky ones who don't follow my rambling nonsense on this blog: i have a lot of trouble visualizing places or people when writing (or reading tbh) so i usually use a lot of atmosphere and emotion to mask the fact that i have no fucking clue what this very important place/person looks like. )

there are cons and pros to this approach. by being so vague and focusing on small bits that seem an ocean apart, the game gives just enough for the player to fill in the blanks themselves. that is good, because then the player is more likely to fill said blanks with stuff they like. it ends up being more of collaborative effort - and i'm sure the writers behind the game use the players' "headcanons" as some sort of thermometer for what/how to write next. so its writers and players feeding off each other's ideas in a way.

buuuuut.... it can also be pretty bad. you risk never committing to a vision or plotline by writing like this. nothing is ever set in stone. retconning, which isn't bad by itself, can happen way too much to be acceptable. if something can end up being anything, what is the point of it existing anyway? why should you care if the spine behind isn't well formed enough to carry the story later?

another danger is that the actual canon and the player's canon can end up being way too different in the end. maybe you meant to write the story this way... but the player filled the blanks just differently enough that "this way" ends up being unsatisfying and wrong.

but the biggest problem, for me, is risking never getting a proper resolution. since so many story moments and worldbuilding elements end up coming from "vibes", you risk relying way too much on the rule of cool.... which sets up a lot of stuff, usually, but never concludes them. that's also my biggest problem with asoiaf, for example - so much of that series is about building up tension, foreshadowing certain battles or encounters or whatever... that the payoff is almost never there (which is only made worse by the loooong time between book releases). it gets to a point that nothing the author comes up with will satisfy what the reader is expecting of the story.

"vibes" (or themes & aesthetics if you will) do a wonderful job of touching a reader's (or player's) strings with imagery, emotion and promise. but whatever comes from it needs to be tied up into an actual storyline (most of the time, at least). ffxiv managed to pull it off with its last two expansions but destiny stumbled a bit with its last one. players were expecting SO much of lightfall after the expansion before it, witch queen, since it managed to nail both vibes and plot. witch queen and the seasons (kind of episodes) after it setup SO much stuff. it promised a lightfall that would be an explosion - a much waited confrontation between the players and the villain, answers given, mysteries solved... and it did nothing of the sort. confusion and anger soon followed.

which is to say... vibes can be very helpful when you pause to interrogate why they interest you so much. why do you like this particular aesthetic, this imagery, this turn of phrase? some elements just pull you in and its fine to go and write a chapter or scene that is basically just you going "wow this is SO cool" even though you have no clear idea why. it's just the vibes it gives. it just presses your right buttons.

... but you will need to wrap them up into something coherent eventually. and for writers i think it's easier - usually "later" just means "once the first draft is done" aka "no one but your trusted betas will ever have to glance at this mess". for live service games like ffxiv or destiny - or even regular rpgs like dragon age or mass effect - it can be very dangerous. writers come and go. turns out that vibes-fuelled story point someone cleared for release 4 years ago doesn't make sense after all! and yeah, hyping up certain characters and plot elements seemed like a great idea for player retention 6 months ago, but what the hell do we do now?

it's too late - the players have already played the thing, they have VERY strong emotions about the thing and they are waiting impatiently for you make the resolution of said thing awesome. and you've got no clue of how to meet said expectations.

(having said all that, i do believe authors can all fall prey to this in non-standalone works too. but we usually have the ability/autonomy to make hard decisions, which video game writers of huge ips like destiny/ffxiv/dragon age/etc usually don't have.)

and of course, using vibes can go very wrong in other ways. you know the negative art destiny does with its worldbuilding/characters? i think books can go way too hard in the opposite direction. i felt this way when reading stuff like acotar, for example. the story wanted to give me certain vibes BADLY, because vibes work!, but i could see right through it (and this is my opinion!) and there was no meat below the all the fanfarre.

sometimes your characters just havent earned the cool/interesting moments.

anyway!! tldr: ive been thinking a lot about just going with the vibes for my wip and i think that's a pretty neat idea actually!! sometimes tending to your darlings can lead to interesting realizations about your story's themes that you otherwise would not notice by being too stuck to rigid plotting and too much rationalization (does it advance the plot? is this scene truly necessary? how is this developing the main character? etc) - but only when you interrogate them enough to find that out and use this newfound knowledge to enhance the story in a revision/another draft.
