i think, at the end of the day, you have to respect the work you are adapting. a writer doesn't have to be a fan of the source material, or strictly follow the primary story, but you have to understand what made it good, what made it appealing, and what it meant to say.

i would say netflix's dungeon meshi rigorously follows the original manga, often panel for panel, to great effect. it's an excellent adaptation that understands the themes and character of the work. it celebrates it for what it is. conversely, i'd argue that amc's interview with the vampire is spectacular precisely because of the way it breaks from canon. it actively 'yes, and's the book, imo, thoughtfully exploring the themes on its own terms. changes are not inherently bad, nor is a perfect replica inherently good.

you can like a work, and not understand it. you can understand it and not be a fan. but if you can't respect it, you should just be writing original work.

@shadowy-dumbo-octopus​ Okay so-I had the idea/want to draw your boys for a bit now-your birthday (happy birthday btw) being today is very incidental but hey~it’s fate~ 

For everyone who is new here-Levi(the very white one) is a Witcher OC created by shadowy-dumbo-octopus (for the sole purpose of appearing once in Krakens and Tadpoles and staying around anyway)...well and Kiyan(the bane of my existence) is Kiyan-this design being also done by shadowy-dumbo-octopus and me trying my best to get other peoples brain-ideas onto digital paper in any decent way (art is hard) The above mentioned fic of Krakens and Tadpoles basically deals with Kiyan and Levi meeting throughout the whole part of Kiyan being tortured all the way into getting saved by Levi and getting to see the Kraken school (also created by shadowy-dumbo-octopus because why not just make a whole Witcher School as well-love it) and it’s inhabitants and philosophies and so on It’s a good time, a bad time, a good time, a bittersweet time-that’s my summary

I am sure I’ll go of rambling in the tags but right now my brain can’t think of more to say in here so-bonus content
