Ignore me if I am getting stuff wrong but I’ve recently begun to think of Viktor’s journey throughout Arcane in the context of the classic gothic sci-fi novel Frankenstein (I specify novel due to not watching any of the movies). It’s fascinating how Viktor is both the creature (“Adam”) and, uhm, Victor Frankenstein himself.

~Essay below the cut for your scrolling ease~

Firstly, it’s clear in season 1 how Viktor = Victor. Both are bright eyed students yearning for knowledge and to make change with professors warning them to not get lost within the ideals to the post they lose their morals. Unlike Victor Frankenstein, Viktor sees the horrors of the Hexcore only after it as killed, yet like the tale of yore he has no strength to beat his creature alone. So Viktor asks Jayce for help.

Now, Jayce is our Frankenstein. Another bright eyed inventor, doomed to create. He brings the dead to life with an unexplained science. Yet unlike Victor, Jayce sees his resuscitated creature with awe at first when it awakens. All his theories are true. Yet it, Viktor, languishes. An unnatural life, an unnatural body, fused with his creature into something new. Like the creature, he flees, desperate to find out who he, who it is.

I would consider Viktor in act 2 of season 2 a continuation of him as the creature, if the creature was seen as a messenger of god. As the creature once said, “.. I ought to be thy Adam, but I am rather the fallen angel..” (Chapter 10). Viktor is if the creature were truly allowed to be Adam, to be the first of the new mankind. The next step of Evolution. One could argue he still represent Victor within his scientific pursuits, but I’d retort the creature has as much of a smart mind as his creator, willing to push himself.

Sadly for Viktor, Jayce has no awe left. He has fully embraced being Frankenstein, seeing his choice after the bombing as an inhumane mistake. Jayce declares his goal: to right his wrongs. Unlike both Viktor and Victor, Jayce has the strength to do so. He brings himself infront of his creature. Something made with his friend’s body, wearing his friend’s face, his friend’s memories recognizing Jayce and feeling safe. So Jayce must tighten his grip on the hammer kill it.

When act 3 begins, Viktor is now an amalgamation of both the creature and Frankenstein. He is something new and feared, something that wants and begs for its creator’s love and acknowledgement. He is someone exploring a new field, seeking praise as he delves into waters too deep for people to handle, not noticing the air leaving his lungs as he drowns in the knowledge around him. He creates many a creature, each a cherished doll.

I’d say that Jayce is also a similar amalgamation, something touched and formed by something, someone, higher than him. Someone else’s creature, a horrid reminder of everything that world lost nestled within his hands. He is still Frankenstein, as seen with “My partner died in this room.” (S2, Act III). I think there is more to be said on Jayce’s journey in the context of Frankenstein but it’s 1am and I could make a more official essay later. I felt it important to include this short paragraph, however, before we delve into our conclusion.

The two finally stand face to face once more, the lines are blurred on who is the creature and the creator, but that does not matter now. No matter which of the two they are, they want the other dead. So they fight and the lines blur further and further till the two have to look at eachother, at their human faces in the cosmic plane. The line is gone. Both Viktor and Jayce are the creators of Hextech, the new science that was a piece of ever tragedy. Both are creatures made by Hextech, unable to live without it. So like Victor and the creature, Jayce and Viktor realize they have no place left in the world. So they leave it, letting the world distort and contort their story as time passes by.

NONONO I PROMISE I LIKED IT I WOULDNT HAVE POSTED FANART OF IT IF I DIDNT i love the music like those violins scratch the itch in my brain they really embody the feeling of the play. and dt and jos vantyler and toby jones are soooooo so fucking good as the gloucesters they r my fav part of the adaptation. i was just was thinking about lear adaptations in general and how the specific cordelia in my mind doesn't exist anywhere i've seen so far past this (that one hate comment makes me mad they doesn't know wtf theyre talking about lmsdkfdlw)... anyway specific to the audio drama i do have a few gripes, like i wish they didn't cut down cordelia's "glib and oily art" lines or the asides she has to the audience bc i feel they are soooo important to her characterization beyond "she's a perfect moral angel" (like, even if you don't subscribe to autistic cordelia these lines do show her being nervous about how she can't/won't flatter lear like her sisters and how there's a part of her that wishes she could, which adds SO much personality and nuance to her) and re richard wilson's lear i'm just kinda going "Where is your fucking rage Rise Rise Rise" all the time BUT the point of the post i made is that i can't expect every production i watch to be the perfect version that exists in my brain that's all

So hear me out, i don't know why but in my brain Johnny is really To someone from a warm climate (uiscefhuaraithe) coded. There’s something about him.

I think it’s knowing where his callsign comes from, the fact that “Soap” is a silly af name but also was given to him because and i quote (i don’t, sorry if it’s not an actual quote of the actual lore) “he’s the most efficient cleaning up a building”.

Like, he’s just as messed up as the others. Obviously everyone in their own ways and on different levels (im looking at you Ghost). But then he’s also like the golden retriever in the group, the one to keep the energy up.

So, it’s giving “In summer's heat, I learned to dread, the comin' of the night” and “And I wish I could say the cold lake water of my heart / Christ, it's boilin' over” you know??

So yeah, that’s what I'm thinking. I’m trying to properly portray how that translates to a scenario with the reader because it’s been in my mind pretty much since I first listened to it. But I'm struggling to properly put it in words, idk my brain is dumb like that sometimes. It just works with vibes, I guess.

I just have really specific moments and sentences but not like a proper structure i guess. I’ll get there soon though (i hope).

Well... after putting it off for 2 days I finally did Horsemen Apocalypses :(

Gods. This game is all about missed chances and could-have-beens. Not a single character is unscathed. Even those that make it out alive only have bittersweet endings. I hate it here (affectionate)

2 days … you’re so brave …. one time, i dropped rdr2 for an entire year specifically to avoid horsemen, apocalypses LMFAO it was when my hyperfixation for the game started up again this time that i had no choice but to do it so i could keep playing 💔

my condolences either way, i think it’s my least favourite mission of the whole game. it makes me nauseous to think about, nonetheless play.

i think red dead redemption 2 is about love, but grief is love with nowhere to go, and this game has such a beautiful, gut wrenching way of exploring that via young, essentially plot-irrelevant characters and their subsequent demises (regarding the “could-have-beens”). i don’t know if i agree that it’s about missed chances, though … in a way, i see what you mean … but to me, i think the vdl’s lived their way, and died their ways, but at the root of it all, it was love that saved them for so, so long. most of them didn’t belong anywhere else, and before dutch went crazy and led them awry, a lot of them were genuinely not too poorly off when they ended up following him (see people like javier, lenny, tilly, reverend, etc. people who literally would have died (or worse) otherwise. also, i am a truther that dutch genuinely had all of their best interests at heart prior to micah, despite his preexisting ego. it was simply his ego that ended up being their downfall.). they rode hard and they died for it, but they did it for love, and as … unsatisfactory as nearly everyone’s endings are, i don’t think all that loving was in vain. it saved john, abigail, and jack- and arthur, too, in it’s own way. it saved tilly and trelawny as well. for them, literally. everyone else, it saved every day that they rode their rough lives, because it gave them something to live for.

you’re absolutely right though that no one left unscathed, and that most of their endings are almost nothing but bittersweet. rockstar has hatred in their heart and believes that sharing is caring 💔 i would love a dlc where everyone makes it out and is happy and peeling mangos in tahiti or something or other but i know in my heart that it wouldn’t even feel right 💔 i, too, hate it here 💔💔💔

regarding kieran, he is absolutely wasted potential in a meta sense LOL rockstar did genuinely waste him, i feel like. we already know that he was meant for more, and who knows how much more that was, but he of all characters i believe was almost completely wasted, in the end. which sucks !!!!! i could spin a tale about how he was saved by love every day prior to his death as well (which is true. especially because he is explicitly noted to be particularly gentle, meaning he loved the hardest out of all of the men in the gang, in a way. love, for kieran duffy, is an indestructible part of his being. despite it all, it’s his bleeding heart that keeps him living, even in the most miserable of circumstances.) but since he literally was involved in a ton of scrapped material, i will bitch and moan quite readily about the expanse of his “missed chances”. i’ll spare you, though. just know … i understand … i get it ….. truly, i do …..
