Hyperbrake Racing

Everything in Human ships has a manual override. They love automating all processes and reduce any workload to nothing, but also have this compulsive need to be able to take direct control if so desired.

They also have emergency off switches for everything. Yes, including life support. Don't ask, you'll just get a variant of:

Obviously, this applies to things you should never under any circumstances shut down preemptively, such as a Hyperspace Jump.

The earliest space-faring civilizations quickly discovered that if a Hyperdrive has a power interruption even for a nano-second your atoms will get dispersed across a few light months. This is why all Hyperdrives have an internal chargeable uninterruptible power supply unit.

Humanity, however, did not allow "Not having any reason whatsoever" to stop them from figuring out a way. Utilizing their ridiculous quantum computer speed and the ability of their fusion reactors to charge a Hyperdrive mid-jump, and with an injection of a disgusting few million lines of hack code that manipulate all related pieces of hardware in just the most nauseating sequences, they created the Hyperbrake.

Also, not a metaphor - braking literally causes Humans to feel nauseous, sometimes throw up, rarely even pass out. Not a single volunteer crew member aboard joint vessels from any of the other Coalition species has dared to "test" what happens to them.

As with nearly all things Humans come across or invent, they will find a use for it should one not occur normally.

Near Neptune

Daniel, Samantha, and Nicholas Schreier were three siblings ages 17, 19, and 20, respectively. Today they had "borrowed" their dad's General FordStar mark 980-MZ HaulerHound, a civilian grade transport typically used by small business owners. Dad, however, was an enthusiast, and had modified the "Hound Dog", as he calls it, with a military grade reactor and computer core. He's always been that guy who knows a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy who can get the thing legally enough.

There is a nearby research station that the kids often visit due to their mom working there, but today she was not. Instead, what they are doing, is racing against each other to set the best record. Well, technically the opposite of racing - coming to a halt.

Using the Hyperbrake, they are competing to see who can stop the closest to the stations outer point-defense range without entering it or you automatically lose. After Samantha's turn, they were suddenly contacted by the station. It was Yakovskii, one of mom's colleagues and a frequent guest at dad's barbecues, so they were on sorta good terms. Not by the tone voice coming through the comms rights now though:

"What in the Hell are you thinking!? At first I thought you were just messing around and accidentally did that, but TWICE now!?! I checked the trajectory, if you had stopped a half-second later, you would've ended up mere meters from Neptune's upper atmosphere! Did you account for the possible sudden gravitational pull? Can you maneuver that lumbering ship fast enough to not get pulled down? Not to mention Hyperbraking severely impairs your cognitive abilities for a moment? A moment that you need to be clearheaded for or risk DEATH!?!"

The three siblings could only hang their heads in shame and mutter out some weak apologies. After a moment of silence and reflection, Yakovskii speaks in a warmer tone:

*sigh* "Look, I understand it's a fancy new toy and you want to see what you can do. I get it, I really do. Me and my brother used to play vertical hockey the first time we got our hands on a surplus gravity field generator. But we first figured out how to make sure we didn't break our bones in case it failed. Seriously, never forget to consider your own safety first before you try out new things in a peaceful environment. You're not being chased by pirates or trying to avoid the law or whatever.

Take your time, pick a starting position that's further away and keeps Neptune and any of its moons to the side of the station, then aim for an area of space that only has the outer range of the defenses and empty space ahead from your point of view. And please set the regular Hyperjump destination within Sol, don't just pick a random place. The Hyperbrake sometimes loops in on itself and never executes the brake and can only be reset once out of Hyperspace. You don't want to get stuck in a pointless jump for hours do you?"

After this admonishment, the siblings apologized more energetically and took his advice to heart. They spent the next hour competing until all three were down to single meter differences and kinda got bored, so they docked at the station and hung out with the off-duty staff, played some poker, but then dad barged in and dragged them all home. They were not invited to the barbecue gatherings for two weeks, but only because mom told him to. Personally he was excited about all the data his kids had unknowingly given him with all their jumping and braking, a real stress test for his beautiful Hound Dog.

Now that I'm taking a bit of a break from my usual workload, I thought I'd share an idea that's been kicking around in my head for around a year or so.

For whatever reason, I've loved the idea that the Splatoon world that we see in the games is just a mask hiding an ugly dystopian society. I'm not just talking about how it's a post-apocalypse, more that the humans' fate was a cautionary tale to the cephalopods: our consumerism and warlike politics were the downfall of our society, so please don't make the same mistakes!

But that's the thing: they missed the message. They didn't just miss it, they went even farther than we did.

Octo Expansion touched on this, but I've done some outlines detailing a story where the world is arguably worse off in the Mollusk Era than the Human one. Where the world isn't just dying, it's too far gone to save. As if motivated by the death of their planet, ancient human automated warfare machines grind back to life, continuing a struggle over scraps of desert and wasteland that nobody cares about anymore. The cephalopods flock to cities, shield their children from the horrors of the world, but scramble for their own escapes because they know there's nothing they can do but wait for the end.

And that's what we see in the Splatoon games: an attempt to keep up appearances. That everything is great and fun... but it's not that hard to prove otherwise. The tides are rising, the Salmonids are running out of safe places to hatch so they charge the cities, and old human technology is returning to ring the same death knell they rang all those millennia ago. The cephalopods wonder for whom the bell tolls, and they simply cannot fathom that it tolls for them.

It's probably way too much for a Nintendo game, but I'd love to take a crack at writing a fic or two with this premise.

Why AI sucks so much

(And why it doesn't have to.)

AI sucks right now. Because it was never to be used, like it is used right now. Because the way AI is currently employed, it does the one thing, that was always meant to be human.

Look. AI has a ton of technological problems. I wrote about it before. Whenever you have some "AI Writer" or "AI Art", there is no intelligence there. There is only a probability algorithm that does some math. It is like the auto-complete on your phone, just a bit more complex, because it has been fed with basically the entire internet's worth of words and pictures. So, when the AI writes a story, it just knows that there is a high likelyhood that if it has been asked to write a fantasy story it might feature swords, magic and dragons. And then puts out a collection of words that is basically every fantasy story ever thrown into a blender. Same when it "draws". Why does it struggle so much with teeth and fingers? Well, because it just goes by likelihood. If it has drawn a finger, it knows there is a high likelihood that next to the finger is going to be another finger. So it draws one. Simple as that. Because it does not know, what a finger is. Only what it looks like.

And of course it does not fact check.

But all of that is not really the main problem. Because the main culture actually just is the general work culture, the capitalist economy and how we modelled it.

See, once upon a time there was this economist named Kaynes. And while he was a capitalist, he did in fact have quite a few good ideas and understood some things very well - like the fact that people are actually working better, if their basic needs have been taken care for. And he was very certain that in the future (he lived a hundred years ago) a lot of work could be done by automation, with the people still being paid for what the machines were doing. Hence having the people work for like 15 hours a week, but getting paid for a fulltime job - or even more.

And here is the thing: We could have that. Right now. Because we did in fact automate a lot of jobs and really a ton of jobs we have right now are just endless busywork. Instead of actually being productive, it only exists to keep up the appearance of productivity.

We already know that reducing the workdays to four a week or the workload to 30 or even 25 hours a week does not really decrease productivity. Especially with office jobs. Because the fact is that many, many jobs are not that much work and rather just involve people sitting in an office working like two hours a day and spending the rest with coffee kitchen talk or surfing the internet.

And there are tons of boring jobs we can already automate. I mean, with what I am working right now - analyzing surveying data - most I do is just put some parameters into an algorith and let the algorith do the work. While also part time training another algorithm, that basically automatically reads contracts to make notes what data a certain contract involves. (And contrary to what you might believe: No, it is not complicated. Especially those text analysis tasks are actually super simple to construct, once you get the hang of it.)

Which also means, that half of my workday usually is spend of just sitting here and watching a bar fill up. Especially with the surveying data, because it is large, large image files that at times take six to ten hours to process. And hint: Often I will end up letting the computer run over night to finish the task.

But that brings me to the question: What am I even doing here? Most of the time it takes like two hours to put the data in, run a small sample size for checking it and then letting it run afterwards. I do not need to be here for that. Yet, I do have to sit down for my seven and a half hours a day to collect my paycheck. And... It is kinda silly, right?

And of course there is the fact that we technically do have the technology to automate more and more menial tasks. Which would make a lot of sense, especially with the very dangerous kinda tasks, like within mining operations. Like, sure, that is a lot more work to automate, given that we would need robots that are actually able to navigate over all sorts of terrain, but... You know, it would probably save countless lives.

Same goes for many, many other areas. We could in fact automate a lot. Not everything (for example fruit picking is surprisingly hard to automate, it turns out), but a lot. Like a real lot.

And instead... they decided to automate art. One of the things that is the most human, because art for the most part depends on emotions and experience. Art is individual for the most part. It is formed by experience and reflection of the experience. And instead of seeing that, they decided to... create a probability generator for words and pixels.

So, why?

Well, first and foremost, because they (= the owner class) do want to keep us working. And with that I mean those menial, exhausting, mind-numbing jobs that we are forced to have right now. And they want us to keep working, because the more free time we have, the more time we have to organize and, well, rise up against the system, upon realizing how we are exploited. Work itself is used as a tool of oppression. Which is why, no matter how many studies show that the 30 hour week or 4 day week is actually good, that UBI actually helps people and what not, the companies are so against it. It is also why in some countries, like the US, the companies are so against paid sick leave, something that is scientifically speaking bonkers, because it actually harms the productivity of the company. And yes, it is also why still in the midth of a pandemic, we act as if everything is normal, because they found out that in the early pandemic under lock down and less people working, people actually fucking organized.

And that... also kinda is, why they hate art. Because art is something that is a reflection upon a world - and it can be an inspiration for people, something that gives them hope and something worth working towards to. So, artists are kinda dangerous. Hence something has to be done to keep them from working. In this case: Devaluing their work.

And no, I do not even think that the people programming those original algorithms were thinking this. They were not like "Yes, we need to do this to uphold the capitalist systems", nor do most of the AI bros, who are hyping it right now. But there are some people in there, who see it just like that. Who know the dangers of actual art and what it can mean for the system that keeps them powerful.

So, yeah... We could have some great stuff with AI and automation... If used in other areas.

the plot:

Virgil works at a company called Ouroboros Technologies, whos goal is to make gadgets that automate the process of buisnesses (though they never go beyond that explanation, it pays hella money so ppl dont question it).

Anyways, Virgil's job is to hire and manage the new employees in his division. And at his 427th employee he hires Stanley Rider (also rider is stanleys canonical last name apparently so might as well use that instead of parable). A 26 year old whos fresh out of university n is working as an intern. Getting coffee, flowers for the office, making sure everyone has enough whiteboard markers since ppl use that up like crazy, etc

The two get close to the point that Stanley becomes Virgil's assistant. Which helps a bit since both Stanley and Virgil are struggling to keep up with their (seperate n now combined) workload.

The company makes a prototype product which is a set of yellow glasses, which gives the user access to the whole company's building, files, and technology in an AR form that they can access at the blink of an eye. The Prototype AR Accessible Biotech Launcher Enviroment (or pARable for short) They give it to Virgil to test, and research finds that it improves productivity 110%. However, the tech begins to backfire as it slowly begins to change Virgil's attitude and body. His mind starts to forget the people and names around him, he starts becoming increasingly more anxious and self conscious of his work when in the presence of an audience, his body begins to rapidly age and drain his life from him, and he begins to crave the control that he is given with these glasses.

Stanley notices this, and pleads with Virgil to stop, which he does. However, it causes them to fall behind on their workload, and the higherups dont like it.

Eventually, as the company threatens to dock their pay, Virgil is forced to use the glasses again in order to keep up with the workload and feed both him and Stanley. At which, Virgil begins to lose himself more and more. Forgetting his name and instead calling himself the Narrator.

The only person that he remembers is Stanley.

One night, Virgil doesn't come home, and after filing a missing persons case, Stanley doesn't find him. (Although the usual silence from Ouroboros seems more ominous than usual)

The company begins to export and send pARables en masse to all its employees, and the company reaches a terrifying peak in efficiency. And Stanley follows. Yet the only difference is that his pARable is different than his coworkers. Where everyone else starts off at a narration explaining the device followed by a room that is designed to look exactly like the user's own bedroom. Stanley's starts off with a story, in an office that looks suspiciously like his.

And concerningly, he can only vaguely remember of his life before the pARable.

And so the game plays out like normal, except both Stanley and The Narrator cant help but shake the fact that the other feels so familiar somehow.

@musingmemories sent: 72. being in a train that was crowded when you got in and now its quiet, looking at the seats knowing that there were people sitting there moments ago and now they’re gone — For Chishiya Shuntarō and Kuina Hikari ✨

‘ ɴᴇxᴛ ꜱᴛᴏᴘ: pNɐ˥ɹƎpᴚoᙠ ꜱʜɪʙᴜʏᴀ ᴄʀᴏꜱꜱɪɴɢ~!’

The automated announcement struggled to pierce through the tune currently blaring through his earphones— prompting cat-like eyes to flutter open, squinting underneath the shadow of his hood until adjusting to the bright fluorescents decorating the train’s compartment. He hadn’t been sleeping, merely resting his eyes. Hell, Chishiya didn’t know the meaning of the word ‘sleep’ despite being in dire need of a good nights rest. Working twelve hour shifts seven days a week at impossible hours in one of the busiest, most stressful work environments would do that to a person. Yet, even with the long hours and massive workloads sapping away at the last of his mental and psychical energy? His brain and body remained reluctant to shut off. Maybe tonight would be the night dreamland would finally grant him access.. not likely, Chishiya knew that. Right now wasn’t the correct time to try though.

Crime rates in Japan had fallen tremendously, that was true — in fact, petty theft and reports of break-ins were at an all time low according to news statistics. Still, there were bad people lurking around every corner and Chishiya didn’t really fancy dozing off only to wake up and find that his wallet and phone had been stolen by some random pickpocket too lazy to go out into the real world and get a job. It never seized to amaze him how selfishly brutal people were willing to be for their own gain.. who was he kidding? After years of witnessing it firsthand working at a corrupted hospital, Chishiya was used to people stooping low and doing anything and everything to benefit themselves.

If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em, right?

Speaking of people, though.. where had they all rushed off to? Staring at the empty seats adjacent to and across from his own.. Chishiya was surprised to find all of them completely vacant. Just moments ago, the train had been overcrowded— pedestrians cramped together like tinned sardines in their awkward shuffles to find an unoccupied space. Now, after taking a brief glance around? Chishiya could confirm his compartment was empty. That couldn’t be right. Maybe he had fallen asleep after all, and this was a dream.. again, not likely.

Shifting his gaze down at the time on his phone confirmed it had been all but three minutes since he’d closed his eyes, and even so, the train hadn’t made any stops since then which meant nobody had gotten off. It was almost as though they’d all disappeared.. wouldn’t that be a crying shame~?

Maintaining his signature cool, calm and collected composure, the blond pocketed both phone and earphones as he rose to his feet. This mystery wasn’t going to solve itself, and it’d piqued his interest enough to have him wanting to know more. Making his way further into the train through each compartment, he wasn’t at all surprised to find each one as lifeless as the last. Truthfully, Chishiya was beginning to believe he was the only person inhabiting the train.. that was until he made his way into the last carriage to find a lonely figure standing in wide-eyed wonder and looking just as bewildered as he’d originally felt. A woman. Tall and slender with dreadlocks draped down her back. An interesting individual, that was for sure.

“..You seem lost.” Finally speaking after lingering in the doorway, Chishiya took a step further into the space after watching in amusement as she almost jumped out of her skin at the sound of his voice. “I’m assuming you’re wondering where everyone’s gone too.” Humming in thought, Chishiya focused his gaze out of the window as the world continued to race by.. a thought crossing his mind. “Who knows, maybe we’re the last people on board. Maybe even the train driver has disappeared too, which means we’re stuck on a speeding train until we crash. Wouldn’t that be a funny way to go~?” With a hint of a smirk pulling at his lips and not much to offer in regards of reassurance, Chishiya began to move by her as though he hadn’t even been talking to her to begin with.
