March 1987. While the 1984 LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES series didn't focus exclusively on the female Legionnaires by any means, it gave many of them some of their finest moments, such as this exceptional spotlight on Legion founder Saturn Girl (pictured above left). Awakening to find herself a prisoner in a labor camp on an unknown planet, surrounded by virtually mindless fellow captives, Saturn Girl has to use every bit of her intelligence, strength, and telepathic ability to find a way out for herself and three other captured Legionnaires. This is a remarkable story in many ways, not least for its imaginative depiction of Saturn Girl's telepathic journey into the minds of her comrades. More under the cut

Saturn Girl (Imra Ardeen of Titan) was one of the original Legionnaires, introduced in ADVENTURE COMICS #247 back in 1958. She had actually retired for a while after marrying cofounder Garth Ranzz (Lightning Lad), with whom she'd had two young children, and at this point was only occasionally involved in Legion business, although she and Garth had recently had a nasty run-in with one of the Legion's worst enemies, as seen in the 1986 LEGIONNAIRES 3 miniseries. Nevertheless, Imra in this period was one of the most experienced members of the team, having been a professional superhero since she was 14 years old.
This issue begins with Imra waking up after having been mentally controlled like her fellow captives; while she was out, her telepathic abilities had somehow managed to break the mental blocks suppressing her thoughts and personality. She immediately has a Beverly Crusher "No, it is the world that is wrong" moment:
Tumblr media
For the reader, the "Universo Project" title banner on the cover has already tipped the identity of the story's villain: Universo, a former Green Lantern called Vidar, is a power-hungry would-be tyrant with formidable hypnotic powers. However, at this point, Imra doesn't have any idea what's happened or where she is. She proceeds to carefully analyze the physical layout of their prison:
Tumblr media
She assesses possible escape routes, but quickly runs into a problem: Although there are no guards other than surveillance drones, Imra doesn't have superhuman strength or endurance, and without her Legion flight ring and transuit, she can't fly or hold her breath indefinitely, which means she won't be able to get out on her own. However, she knows that there are three other Legionnaires among the prisoners: Dream Girl (Nura Nal of Naltor), Brainiac 5 (Querl Dox of Colu), and Chameleon Boy (Reep Daggle of Durla). (Although Imra hasn't made the connection yet, they've all been singled out because they are the Legionnaires most resistant to Universo's hypnotic powers, and thus the greatest potential threats to his plans.) Together, the four of them might be able to contrive an escape, but first Imra has to help them escape the mental blocks that have made them virtual zombies.
With great difficulty, Imra manages to carry her three comrades one at a time to a cave that seems to be unmonitored. She then begins the even more challenging phase of her plan: entering the unconscious minds of each of her friends, something she had always made a point of not doing.
Tumblr media
The 1980s saw an enormous improvement in the physical production capabilities of mainstream comics. The color hold and glow effect in the page above would not have been possible when Paul Levitz first started writing Legion stories in the '70s, and this story uses that technology to good advantage.
I'm skipping over some scene changes here; the story cuts away at several points to show what the other Legionnaires are doing and what Universo is up to back on Earth. That's less interesting than what's happening with Imra, as she enters the unconscious mind of Nura Nal:
Tumblr media
Production technology is one thing, but flashy effects are meaningless if the story has nothing to say. These telepathy sequences are really visually inventive, and I'm curious how much of this is in the script and how much is the imagination of penciller Greg LaRocque, who outdoes himself here on what I assume was a challenging job.
As for what Saturn Girl is seeing: Dream Girl is a precog whose powers manifest primarily in the form of prophetic dreams. She was also one of the most scientifically proficient Legionnaires, although her intellect tended to be overshadowed by the fact that she was a high-maintenance diva and frequently a huge bitch. Her boyfriend, Star Boy (Thom Kallor), whose image Imra sees in Nura's head, generally took a smile-and-nod approach to Nura's fits of primadonna bullshit.
Tumblr media
Did I mention that Dream Girl was kind of a diva? Even in this critical situation, Imra can't help but roll her eyes a bit at her friend's, ahem, robust self-regard.
With Nura freed, Imra enters the 12th-level computer mind of resident Coluan super-genius Brainiac 5:
Tumblr media
Brainiac 5 was never depicted as an android or a cyborg, so what did it mean for him to have a "computer mind"? Levitz apparently gave that a lot of thought, and the result is an interesting visualization of Brainy's superhuman intellect.
Tumblr media
The blond woman in the circle near the top looks like Dream Girl, which doesn't make much sense: There was no love lost between Brainy and Nura in this era, and it seems unlikely she would be this much on his mind. I have an inkling that that image was originally supposed to be Supergirl — about whom Brainy DID have strong feelings and whose death he had been mourning not that long before — but that Levitz and LaRocque got an 11th-hour editorial reminder that Kara could no longer even be mentioned, resulting in that section being hastily redrawn. (I'm speculating, but it seems reasonable.) The guy with the headband, meanwhile, is former Legionnaire Lyle Norg, the first Invisible Kid, who died in SUPERBOY #203. Lyle was Brainy's friend, and there was sometimes the sense that Brainy had romantic feelings for him, so his presence here is noteworthy.
Finally, Imra must reach the mind of Chameleon Boy. Cham was one of a handful of pre-reboot Legionnaires who were genuinely not human: He was from the planet Durlan, whose inhabitants were all shapeshifters. By this time, it had been established that Cham's normal form (orange humanoid with antennae) was not his true shape, but a common "default" form Durlans used when engaging with humans so as not to freak them out TOO badly. As Imra discovers below, this means that Cham's mind is also completely inhuman:
Tumblr media
This is a fascinating representation of the inside of Cham's head. Durlan bodies are unusually malleable — Chameleon Boy's shapeshifting never seems to be constrained by mass or volume, and he routinely becomes creatures of wildly different sizes and forms. So, what parts ARE Cham? Where does his personality reside? An interesting philosophical question, but this is still an adventure story, and Imra is on the clock:
Tumblr media
Very impressive. What I find particularly compelling about how Levitz treats Saturn Girl in this story is that he resists the temptation to amp up her powers or turn her into a blond Batman; he stays within the established bounds of her abilities while emphasizing her practical resourcefulness. You also get a sense at several points that Imra is struggling a bit to keep herself calm (she reassures herself that her husband is probably looking for her and that she will be reunited with her kids), since she recognizes that if she panics, she's probably done for. (There's a notable contrast with LEGIONNAIRES 3, by Keith Giffen and Mindy Newell, where Imra does break down after she learns one of her sons has been kidnapped; she's not made of stone.)
It's not hard to see why this series is still considered the standard-bearer for modern Legion stories: Levitz was deeply concerned with the personalities and relationships between the characters — not only within the individual stories, but also across the group's long and convoluted history — but he also managed to come up with imaginative and exciting adventures through which to explore and develop those things. It doesn't always work, of course (although there are few real clunkers in this run), but when it works, it works really well, and even the less-successful arcs are generally interesting. Certainly, the female Legionnaires had never been treated with this level of care and respect before — and most of them haven't since then, either.

Dotiwala Bakery – During their in reign India, the Dutch established in Surat a warehouse on Dutch Road, in which five parsee gentlemen were employed to make breads. When the Dutch left India at the end of their rule they handed over their ovens to one of our ancestors Mr. Faramji Pestonji Dotivala. Faramji continued to supply breads to the remaining colonials. As time went by, the business went slack and the breads were left unsold. Bread dough in those days was fermented with toddy (sap of palm tree) so it would not spoil for considerable amount of time. However the breads would become dry due to loss of moisture. The leftover dried breads were sold cheap, which gained considerable popularity due to their lightness and crispy texture. The demand increased so the breads had to be dried in the ovens specially to achieve the desired dryness and texture. They were also shaped differently. Even today these biscuits are made and are very popular, and are known as Irani biscuits.

"Happy Birthday, Marines!" Today, the United States Marine Corps turns 247 Years Old. Eighty Years Ago, they turned 167, while US Marines of the 1st Marine Division were carving a chunk of hell known as Guadalcanal away from the Imperial Japanese in the Solomon Islands. Here, we have two programs from November 10th, 1942... and a photo of Marines, who always celebrate November 10th no matter how grim the situation, honoring their birthday ON Guadalcanal with enemy troops only a short distance away. Tough, fierce, and proud, US Marines will always be a shining example of America's finest military personnel. The Ultimate Superman/Batman Reading Guide
Tumblr media
Do you like Superman and Batman's friendship but don't know where to start reading? Or are you just looking for more to read? This list is for you!
Comics can be quite hard and complicated to navigate, especially when two characters have interacted for 69 years. A lot has happened in that time! I made this reading guide to help you along. It's organized by era and (mostly) in chronological order.
Many thanks to @katsuyacrimson and Orph for their input and help, and @worldsfinest for some last-minute info!
Some personal faves:
World's Finest vol. 2 (1990) >> Good starting point if you want a self-contained story that is not really in continuity.
Superman/Batman (2003) >> Good starting point. See under 'Post-crisis' for reading order.
Dark Knight over Metropolis >> See under 'Post-crisis' for reading order.
Batman/Superman (2013) #1-4 and #16-20 + annual #2

Humans are weird: Insurgency Part 1
Planet: Sepher III Status: Conquered Industrial Capacity: Limited - Reconstruction in progress Agriculture Capacity: Limited - Reconstruction in progress Orbital Capacity: 5 orbital platforms - 2 require minor repair, 1 requires extensive repair and overhaul Population:  753,682 Humans                        35,321 Mentas                        125,873 Menta Colonists enroute. Military: 0 Human                    175,946 Menta Soldiers                2,653 Naval Personnel                3 Moltak Destroyers Leadership: Military Governor Galvin Zecks                        Sub Commander Cobal Oft ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Year 2743 Formal Occupation +1 To: High Council of Menta From: Military Governor Galvin Zecks To my honored leaders I bid you well, I wish to once more thank you for your confirmation of my stewardship of our latest conquest from the humans. Already I have put to work the remaining population of humans that did not flee at rebuilding this planet and preparing it for the coming colonists. Within a few months of their arrival I will have turned this war torn world into the lynch pin for our future conquests in neighboring sectors.
I have just seen off the remaining military forces which left to continue the campaign. I have no doubt their victories will resound through the hallowed halls of the seven suns for ages to come.
May the eyes of the seven watchers gaze upon your deeds. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Year 2743 Formal Occupation +1 To: Military Governor Galvin Zecks From: Cobal Oft
Per your instructions the remaining humans in the surrounding area have been put to work rebuilding the capital and space port.
Our initial strikes on both locations was deep and the damage is extensive. It will be some time before they are operational again.
In the mean time I have had our ground forces establish their base around the capital building. They have begun work on fortifications along with several barracks and depot buildings have already been constructed.
From here we have been able to launch extensive patrols around the surrounding area.
I have also dispatched several dozen garrison forces to occupy other cities and smaller towns. Once the capital is secure we can go about setting up additional garrisons. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Year 2743 Formal Occupation +66 To: Cobal Oft From: Military Governor Galvin Zecks The first batch of colonists should be arriving within the next few days.
Finally we can get this dirt ball feeling like a proper Menta world. It will be refreshing to see the streets filled with our people instead of these dirty human rabbles.
To that end I want you to establish exclusion zones around the start port and capital. Expel all humans within and remove them to the outer quarters of the city. The use of lethal force is prohibited at this time for such implementation, much to my displeasure. We can not have our new colonists thinking this world is savage and unhospitable and if word gets out of executions or deaths among the human work force it could reflect badly and dissuade others from coming.
If such methods are required in certain cases make sure that they are properly contained.
After the humans have been relocated establish checkpoints at each of the entrances to the star port and capital. No human is to be allowed in unless with proper authorization. papers.   It's time to remind the humans of their new place on Sepher III. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Year 2743 Formal Occupation +153 To: Military Governor Galvin Zecks From: Cobal Oft
Security of capital has been officially handed over to the Sepher police force. They're a bunch of green jackribs if you ask me but at this point there's no need for military units to be acting like this is a live combat theater.
In the mean time I am dispersing the remaining forces to the regional capitals now that they're finished. All twelve should have substantial reinforcements to support local enforcement which has become a problem since humans fled major cities to minor towns.
Speaking of troop deployments, I heard a rumor that we are about to lose a majority of our standing occupation forces. Can you confirm? If this is true then it might shake up our redeployment considerably. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Year 2743 Formal Occupation +153   To: Cobal Oft   From: Military Governor Galvin Zecks You heard correctly, but in the future I would encourage you to dissuade yourself from gossip. The war with the humans is taking a larger toll than first projected. Reinforcements are being called up from all of Menta space and shipped to Vergo Prime and since Sepher III has been classified as pacified the military leadership has decided such a large force is no longer required.
We can expect transport ships to be in system within the next few days to collect roughly a third of our ground forces. Have the finest soldiers ready on the landing pad before then. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Year 2743 Formal Occupation +247   To: Cobal Oft   From: Military Governor Galvin Zecks I am hearing disturbing reports from one of our mining camps at Golden Peaks. Some sort of violence against one of our guards by a human prisoner.
This came at a rather embarrassing time as I was meeting with several industrialists from the home world about their expansion to our world.
I was able to downplay the event as nothing serious but I want it under control now.
Dispatch several squads and make some examples of the human laborers there. Then go have a word with the mines foreman and express my displeasure with his lack of control.
Be enthusiastic when it comes to telling him how disappointed I am. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Year 2743 Formal Occupation +262   To: Cobal Oft     From: Military Governor Galvin Zecks I feel my previous message may have been unclear in what I wanted done with the mining base at Golden Peaks.
To be clear, I wanted the soldiers to publicly execute one or two human agitators and then beat several dozen more including the foreman.
What I did not want to happen was the destruction of the entire mining operation!
My office is still getting reports of damages and loss of life after the explosives went off.
Consider yourself fortunate that the industrialists had already left or I would have your head on a platter.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Year 2743 Formal Occupation +263   To: Military Governor Galvin Zecks From: Cobal Oft
I have had my men combing the area and we believe we have pieced together what happened.
Several squads arrived just as you requested two days prior and began the process of making examples.
The day before the explosion one of the soldiers executed a human female from the camp and displayed her body at the main mine entrance as a warning.
Later that night a series of explosives went off destroying not only the mining facility but the stationed squads as well.
We believe the humans were able to get their hands on some of the mining charges and wired them to detonate.
Officially I have been stating that the incident was a result of human negligence with improper storage of explosives and the cover story is working. The only problem is the final body count does not add up. It's true because of the blast several more bodies may be buried in the mines, but security footage shows several dozen human workers fleeing the mine before the explosion went off.
I have three teams combing through the surrounding area searching for them.
They will be recaptured and made an example of.

I finally went ahead and made a reading list for Roy. He’s been around awhile, so there’s a lot of comics, especially since he tends to jump between books.
I’ve divided it into six different starting points-- each starting point should be good enough to jump into without having too much knowledge of what’s going. You can jump in at any of them and you’d be good to go (I actually recommend jumping in one of the middle ones and then going back, if you’re someone who prefers newer comics to older ones.)
I’ll include a little bit of info under some of the starting points for you to get a better idea of which one might be best for you to start with.
BOLD = necessary Italics = not necessary, but recommended normal = not necessary
STARTING POINT #0:
Before jumping into any starting point, I recommend you read Green Lantern (1960) #85-86. It’s a 1971 story, so I understand if you may be turned off from it at first, but it’s a classic story for a reason and it’s important in Roy’s history.
STARTING POINT #1:
These are 80s comics, and some of them might have older art. These include some of my favorite stories with Roy, but if you’re someone who prefers newer art and has a harder time getting into older comics, it might be better to come back to this later.
New Teen Titans (1984) #19-21, 24
Suicide Squad (1987) #11-12
Action Comics (1938) #613-618
Action Comics (1938) #627-634
Action Comics (1938) #636-640
New Titans (1988) #52
New Titans (1988) #56
Secret Origins (1986) #38
Secret Origins (1986) Annual #3
New Titans (1988) #60-65
Hawk and Dove (1989) #11-12
New Titans (1988) #66-71
Secret Origins (1986) #50
Hawk and Dove (1989) #26
Armageddon 2001 (1991) #2
STARTING POINT #2:
I personally recommend you leave these comics till the end. I love Roy’s writing in them, but they’re very 90s, if you get what I mean, so a lot of the plots art harder to get into and understand at first.
Deathstroke the Terminator (1991) #18-20
New Titans (1988) #97-107
Green Arrow (1988) #75
Bloodbath (1993) #1-2

Deathstroke the Hunted (1991) #45

Damage (1994) #8, 10
Outsiders (1993) #17
New Titans (1988) #120-121
Damage (1994) #13
Darkstars (1992) #30-31

I keep noticing the abstract topic of discrimination of race, gender, and class in the book about Henrietta Lacks. A quote from the book that shows this abstract topic is "Only people that can get any good from my mother's cells is the people that got money, and whoever sellin them cells--they get rich off our mother and we get nothing...All those damn people didn't deserve her help as far as I'm concerned." (Pg. 247) This quote is connected to the abstract topic because rich white doctors and scientists used Henrietta's cells without her or her family's knowledge, and profited off of the multiple experiments and discoveries they were able to do with them. Her family was kept in the dark because of their race and class. They lived their whole lives without their fair share of profit they deserved from the cells that were their mother. They lived in the dark while scientists and doctors all over the world profited off her cells.

After reading this article, I noticed the topic of discrimination against race. A quote from the article that really relates to the topic is "It is well-established that blacks and other minority groups in the U.S. experience more illness, worse outcomes, and premature death compared with whites. These health disparities were first “officially” noted back in the 1980s..." People are being treated differently by doctors, who are supposed to save their lives, because of their race. This is discrimination at its finest. The girl in the article said that she had a painful medical condition so she went to the ER. She said the ER staff treated her like she was only there to get pain medication and they didn't even try to treat her. She is convinced that she was treated poorly because she is black.
