FASCIAL ARTICULATIONS ⠀ [FASCIAL ANATOMY - OSTEOPATHIC APPROACH] ⠀ The concept of a joint in the body is commonly understood as a junction of two bones such as the elbow. ⠀ However, another definition of a joint is “the linear or angular displacement between two separate biological elements”. ⠀ In essence, a joint can be comprised of any biological tissues that needs to move, pivot or slide/glide around one another. This concept is applied to many soft tissue and fascial links in the body. A junction of two fascial planes in the body typically requires a sliding interface where each layer moves opposite of the other. ⠀ This is referred to as a “fascial articulation” and they are numerous in the human body. This can be between specific fascial layers such as the thoracic diaphragm and the endothoracic fascia or simply between a muscle and it’s superficial fascial layer. An example of motion is ankle plantarflexion, which require bony translation of the talus-tibia but also sliding of the extensor tendons under the retinaculum, effectively creating a fascial articulation. ⠀ These joints need to be evaluated and treated for mobility and function just like bony joints as the two types of joints work in unison to create global body movements. ⠀ In the 2nd diagram, the red arrows represent high value fascial articulations or links. ⠀ Each joint is a connection of separate tissues that requires hydration, elasticity and space to function optimally. Very often, due to trauma, inflammation or inappropriate loading, these tissues become adhered to one another and lose their capacity to slide. This is a “fascial joint dysfunction” and needs to be identified and treated. ⠀ Once fascial dynamics are restored, it is interesting to observe that bony joint restrictions will often improve or resolve. ⠀ Credit @AnatomyLinks & S. Stretches are important!
I try and do stretches for Poppy 2-3 times a week. I pick when I do them: sometimes pre-work, post-warmup, or end of work. If I’m riding it’s pre-work with a check after we’ve ridden. I pair these with the use of an Equilibrium massage pad - I recognise that’s an expensive piece of kit so not available to everyone.
Poppy offered the ‘Triangle’ pose stretch here while trying to not do a leg-back stretch, odd but I’ll take it. In general I’ll stretch her legs and do some back-lifts, plus ‘carrot stretches’ to either side and down. It allows me to get an idea of if she’s got any sticking points that I’d need to ask my physiotherapist to come and check up on.

#dan talks tag#this is mainly about health stuff beloveds just me trying to make things make sense no need to read it <3#this thing with my knees is. so weird like. like i lnow theres something wrong i do know thay#and im gonna try snd go to a doctor soon about it#but my mom keeps insisting thay all i need is yoga or maybe physiotherapy and she wants me to go to a naturopathic doctor bc im so tired#which actually side note about rhe tiredness im realizing that being fully exhausted and just ignoring it and making myself do stuff is uh.#how i lived my life for a rlly rlly rlly long time#and im realizing thay bc ive just had two years of not doing much amd of being ABLE to rest when im tired#which is most of the time#and now im working full time and its. so much and this kind of exhaustion isnt even unfamiliar#insane#anyway i told my mom thay amd she said to go to a naturopathic doctor#and honestly idk enough abt those to know if thays something i can trust but my mom suggested it so im iffy on it#ANYWAY#but about my knees ankles back etc. i know i do know what if it were actually Something#like something thay wasnt just fixable with some yoga#i know thayd be bad#but i almost want it to be something like that bc#idk why#feels like otherwise my parents were right and im being fucking stupid and just need some exercises#theres more to it than that its just hard to put into words#its like. its like if ire actually Something it feels more real more like im#not makinf it up#more like itd explain everything thays going on and thay like. that im allowed to be gentle with myself aboit it#idk#anyway#this feels sort of shitty in a way but. i needed to try and put it into words#make it exist outside of my head
