Gearrscannán ar YouTube
Short films on YouTube
(Don't worry, everything has English subtitles in the videos themselves)
Fán https://youtu.be/e3xnvkMp_1Q?si=i-4pmljDbzA8bRtu
Created by the incredible @nibmoss, an absolute queen (Bánríon). It is a short sapphic story about 2 best friends who end up together and it is my favourite short story ever!!! It is also my favourite piece of Irish media in existence!!! I love it!!! It is incredible!!! BEYOND AMAZING!!!
Yu Ming is ainm dom https://youtu.be/JqYtG9BNhfM?si=jnZjP4LozqOhNxkI
This is a classic. Ive had 4 different teachers show me this over the years, and my first year Irish class studied it exam style. It was the first piece that we studied and everyone LOVED it, people were quoting it all the time. Every second conversation had someone using a line from it. It's a crows pleaser and simple to listen to even without the subtitles provided. It also has a great storyline about a man who is fed up with his life in China and learns Irish to move over here, and well (bhuel) , I won't spoil the plot twist for you
Lipservice https://youtu.be/4QP0eEhhTSo?si=1DLvo_ECRhwGI5s8
It's the day of the oral exams and everyone is terrified (bhí imní an domhain ar gach duine), people are rehearsing in the bathrooms and speaking French instead of English, the stuff that half of them come out with is absolutely gas, this one is such a bit of craic, I was in stitches. And the bit at the end is so sweet. Is breá liom an gearrscannán seo agus beidh mé mo scrúdú béil i dhá bhliain 🙈🙈🙈 (I loved this short film and I've my speaking test in 2 years🙈🙈🙈
Filleann ar feall https://youtu.be/Tay7eMxas2k?si=q3ksVJVYJ7E_xxoa
IT'S CILLIAN MURPHY AG CAINT AS GAEILGE!!! You can't beat a bit of Cillian, he's a national treasure. And this is 2000 Cillian, he's so young (this was before I was born) he's in the Gaeltacht for his holidays with a grumpy friend, on a job to sell some Putchín, and he is everyone's favourite sweetgeart, a bit of a himbo, and a respecter of old ladies. Agus deir duine sa sna tuairimí (a person in the comments said that it's like Breaking bad, but with an Irish teacher that instead of a chemistry one (I've never seen Breaking Bad, so I don't know how true that is, but I do know that this was AR FHEABHAS!!!
Rúbaí https://youtu.be/jjYx5v2BUWo?si=tFu1ektBvHNkoQFB
This is a short story about a little girl (cailín beag) who's class is about to make their 1st Holy Communion, but she doesn't believe in God (ní creideann sí i nDia). She's everyone is trying to convince her that god is real and she's just like "nope, read a bit of Darwin, he's great, I'm off to collect worms", even to the priests face and towards the end there's a bitter sweet twist which gives a LOT of background. This was a nice, easy watch, the little girls was so cute, there were a couple of laughs (cúpla gáire) and the vocab was nice and simple
Gaiste https://youtu.be/Xr-V7vg_Y2Q?si=cMMNqPLkmtugbg8t
Very simple vocab, good message, kind of like a fable, big "One of us is Lying" vibes. Nice short film overall
Fíorghael https://youtu.be/t3Kv4fZ2SOE?si=bHibiFJyRUcvZ-TZ
This ones a bit older, but it's still a good bit of craic. You need to wait a couple of minutes to get into it, but the end is brilliant (Caithfidh tú cúpla nóiméad a fanacht chun dul isteach ar, ach tá an chríoch go hiontach)
Sylvia https://youtu.be/fi_4aweOP4w?si=ZCfUAfYaD73IVn8r
There are plot twists, and then there plot backflips, this was the later. This is so weird, but I really enjoyed it at the same time
Ciúnas https://youtu.be/cGfuQ-HeTmk?si=WRPGmo-UNQ0bw9mA
There's not much dialogue, but all of it is very casual, so you still get to pick up a few words that you wouldn't find in a textbook. The storyline is quite sweet, but please be careful watching because it although it centres around her family's love for her, it is set on the way home from the hospital after she tried to end her own life

I will admit that it never occurred to me that I would need to check the history book that claimed to be scholarly to see if it used references and footnotes, because how could a book be a scholarly work on history without such things, BUT NOW I KNOW BETTER.

a recording of the tumblr CEO Q&A that happened on tumblr live on 07/11/23.
some notes: the very beginning of the video is cut off, but the audio for it is fine. and there are a few small areas in the second half of the video where the audio drops in quality a bit.
all of that is because this whole video is actually frankenstein'd together from several different audio and video sources, recorded by myself, @xccentriktigress, and @fokron, and with extra help from @eiimblr and @sharksfood!
thank you all for working on this team project with me, and for helping archive this so that others can see it! yay teamwork! :D

I would love to listen to your podcast (if you wanna have one) about anything, but something about languages intrigues me. Please, tell me more : )
had to think for a second about what this was about I'm guessing it's my Nopony In This Country Is Pronouncing Przewalski Correctly and now listen..... I have no more to tell you because the like. Concept of languages and within that phonology (the study of the patterns of sounds in a language and across languages) is so wide you wouldn't have enough of a life to say everything about it. Unless you got one thing in mind. But I'm Flattered. Idk if I'd be much of a podcast guy I love visual stimuli. shan't lie I've had for months the idea to do a. Franco-Cantabrian Archeological iceberg... with shit like....... Fontainebleau "water breaking" carving... the Réseau Clastres Only Know Depiction Of [Animal]..... stuff of the sort. but oh well. FLATTERED.... maybe one day. Podcast ideas anyone.
#every few months someone in the patho fandom whos been there a while seems to realize the KH of Khatange or Khodo Khara or even Burakh is#not pronounced K but instead HH and idk if thats because i had the game in russian audio or because i spent hours on the different#Steppe Language pages but im always surprised this is new to some people. like well yeah its the x letter. mostly i dont understand like#not checking the pronounciation if youre unsure. the russian x is not hard to find audio from. its a little like youtubers who go “im not#even gonna try to pronounce this one XD''. but also im glad more people get hashtag aware because i think phonology is such a fantastic#thing to be interested in so. yayyyy.#it just kinda sometimes feels like. A great sense of incuriosity and lack of drive to learn. possibly from fear at a new foreign language.#but above all I'm truly glad more people are hashtag realizing hashtag finding it because truly with the internet pronounciation info#has never been so easy to find. even in english resources. godspeed you!!!!Language learner. Etc.#the wiki has every name (of characters + of places) and every steppe word written in both latin & cyrillic letters by the way that way you#can find what the cyrillic letter of a sound youre unsure of looks like and look it up :D it helped me a lot when i had to find more words#for ATA. good times#tldr it just makes sense To Me when confronted to a phoneme/sound youre unsure the pronounciation of to like. immediately look it up.#so im kinda baffled that ppl may go months being unsure. its not like cyrillic is like. hard to parse its as straightforward as other stuff#ring ring (answers)#anonymous#meiri podcast guy when after all. look at all that yapping

video essay!!!
hi friends!!
if you were curious at all about the video essay i was putting together for my comedy-theory class or are interested in hearing about some projects i'm working on, here's the link to watch it:
youtube
the video is unlisted bc it was specifically made for a class, and since a lot of the future-projects mentioned will probably go through major changes before i'm ready to release them to the world i didn't want this to seem like any kind of announcement video, but i'm also super proud of this video (it's probably my favorite final i've done) and i wanted to share it with any tumblr friends who are interested
if you'd like to learn more about any of the projects feel free to dm me bc i love infodumping about what i'm working on and the projects i mentioned here are very important to me. also dm me if you're at all curious about the comedy theory i'm citing, unfortunately due to the time limit on the assignment i didn't have enough time to give an in-depth explanation people outside of the class could get, but i LOVE comedy-philosophy and i made sure to download all the readings by the end of the course, so i would absolutely be willing to send over some PDFs and do some comedy analysis education lmao
also the first thirteen-and-a-half minutes are the video i turned in as my final, and the last six-and-a-half minutes are my in-class presentation that went along with it. for this assignment we had to construct a "comedy manifesto" using some of the theorists we covered in class to analyze our own comedy and outline goals for what we want our comedy to accomplish, and then for the in-class presentation we had the option of either presenting an abridged version of what we said in our "manifesto" or performing a piece of our own comedy that aligns with our goals. i of course did the second one bc i will never waste a captive audience.
tbh i don't think this was my best performance but i will say i literally memorized it in 24 hours so the fact that i only messed up twice is still impressive (also the lack of audience response is at least partially bc this was the last week of classes so most people who didn't have to present just skipped class)
presentations were also optional and i was the only one who did a piece fully in-character so that also gives you the vibe of the room
btw every piece of music in the video essay (aside from "having an average weekend" by shadowy men on a shadowy planet aka the kith theme) was composed by me for my musical other girls (who needs royalty-free music when you still have the demo files from your musical in fall 2022)
also there was no requirement on this assignment to interview a comedian, i just decided to zoom with paul bellini the week this was first assigned as a flex for my video essay lmao. so anyway watch this video if you want never-before-heard bellini content (at least 20% of which is just bellini complimenting my writing)
oh also if you're curious about the buddy cole tour behind-the-scenes thing i edited for my final in a different class dm me and i'll send you the vid, i'm not posting that one anywhere bc it's not great quality (i made it while super burnt out and i didn't have all the time/resources to include everything i wanted to include, plus the audio's not great) so i don't want it to be released as like an "official first look at the upcoming buddy cole documentary" until i can put together something more polished, but i would be willing to dm the link for people who just want to see a video of me and scott causing chaos on tour knowing it will be a much more polished edit later
anyway go watch my video essay i got the highest possible grade available on it and i'm very proud

I know I’m tapping a sign that has been tapped so many times so many ways but please. My fellow aquato family enjoyers (or actually all psychonauts fans) It does not take too much effort to
1. do some baseline research on anti-Romani stereotypes
and 2. not whitewash your art

Deleting my instagram after 2 years back on because apparently being off antidepressants means I can't handle the rage I feel when I see zionist or misogynistic or transphobic hatred or anything that people disgustingly spew behind a mask of a fucking red pill account like grow up I want to punch and slap everyone.

Captainsparklez will make a clickbait blog of him looking pensive with the title "I'm worried..." and then instead of being about how cancel culture is ending comedy or whatever he's talking about how the current state of the economy is leading to the disintegration of social media companies because their business models cannot adjust to their current level of success

Hey folks,
After a long, drawn out conversation with someone committed to ignoring how harmful TERF talking points are to the queer community, here’s a few important points.
If your response to “you’ve been sharing TERF talking points” is “I don’t care”, I’m going to assume you are a secret TERF
Anyone who is trying to force rigid definitions of any label onto everyone else is at the very best woefully ignorant of the point of the queer community and at worst actively trying to sow discord and harm to everyone
Women can identify as a lesbian and also like their girlfriend’s dick
Trans women are allowed to identify as lesbians, even if they have a dick
Bioessentiallism is dangerous, full stop
TERFs are fascists, and you don’t have to engage with their ideas; the ideas are bad.
Don’t let people ratchet off TERF talking points under the guise of “protecting lesbians” - it’s a fascist tactic that’s been used for years (see “protecting straight women from lesbians” or “protecting white women from black men”)
Anyway if you’d like some resources about TERF talking points and how dangerous they are, here are some excellent essayists to support:

omg how did u learn to video edit it’s so hard for me 😣
i took film classes all throughout high school so video editing was taught to me there! then i continued to create & edit videos throughout uni with a group of friends c: after effects i taught myself tho!!! you definitely do not need to know after effects if you’re just interested in basic editing, but if you’re looking to learn vfx + motion graphics and all that fun stuff, after effects is the way to go! it’s a bit of a learning curve but once you get the basics down you’re pretty much good to go!

Taking a step back and learning to deal with environmental crisis, nihilism
How do you handle the prospect of doom, of environmental catastrophe? As young people, how do we make our way through the world in good conscious and maintain a healthy mindset?
I recently watched a 5-episode series of The Great Simplification podcast with Nate Hagens that features the fascinating Daniel Schmachtenberger, a social philosopher and founder of The Consilience Project. One of these episodes (linked below) gets deep into experiences of youth, of personal struggles in coping with all the bad things that are normalized in society, including the problems that threaten our future. As we grow up and realize how screwed up everything is, the question of what we do next is paralyzing.
Daniel details his own journey growing up and facing the world with blunt honesty. For Daniel, myself, and other young people, nihilism is a logical resolution for coping with violent, doomful realities. This kind of spiraling nihilistic thought, which is egged on nowadays with social media algorithms, can lead to very dark places. I have spent time in the trenches of depression and practiced means of escape, trying out mindfulness techniques with varying levels of success. One thing Daniel says, though, has helped me understand a new way out of negative spirals: we can work with our deep feelings of nihilism to discover purpose in life.
When we recognize the devastating implications of climate change, habitat destruction, ocean acidification, our emotions are complicated. We are affected, to some degree, by the endangerment of species, by pollution of our air, land, and sea, and by existential fears of what the future will look like.
We feel these effects most deeply when we have experienced the power of nature– the serenity and beauty it provides. The more benefits we receive, and the more we are mindful of these benefits, the more it can hurt us to see humanity haphazardly chugging along.
Here is the revealing thing: If we believe enough in the sacred qualities of nature to be crushed by its calculated destruction, this is enough to prescribe oneself a duty to cherish and protect nature by whatever means possible. Assessing our emotions, practicing mindfulness and critical thinking are the best way to come to recognize what drives us (as well as what triggers us into negative thought spirals.)
Avoiding social media and resisting the algorithm, reducing our consumption of resources in small ways, planting native species, supporting small farms and agriculture, contributing to wildlife conservation efforts… these are just some ways we can exercise our power to create positive change. Mindfulness of our connections to and relationships with the natural world is the most powerful fulcrum for knowing what to do.
After listening to this episode, I began an exercise in mindfulness and gratitude. What does nature provide for me?
I am grateful for the oceans and their waves and tides, and being able to swim in clean water.
I am grateful for the colors of foliage, lush plants, and grass– the subtle regional differences in shades of green.
I am grateful for biodiversity, how it yields strong crops, resilient populations, and cultural richness.
I am grateful for delicious vegetables and fruits of all kinds.
I am grateful for the smells of fresh air, of salty ocean air, and of rain.
I am grateful for the earth, geology and the fascinating compositions of natural landscapes.
I am grateful for the serenity that nature provides, and for the privilege to remove oneself from the built environment.
I am grateful for the knowledge of other modes of life, not just of humans across biomes but of other species, patterns and modes of survival.
I recommend making your own list, and use it to practice mindfulness and gratitude. Shifting focus to our benefits can help ground us, and grant us perspective in the midst of our complex environmental crisis.
This video is part 3 of the 5-part series, and if you have the time and mental bandwidth, I cannot recommend it enough.

I haven't played Collapse, but I was watching some videos showing stuff from it. And I don't think I'll ever forgive what they did in terms of Joseph's relationships to his siblings (especially Faith though since that was particularly egregious imo). Reducing all of them to victims of Joseph's manipulations and machinations ruins all four of their characters and puts such a sour taste in my mouth. And I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way.
Honestly, not everything was bad in Collapse. Like in its two predecessors, I thought the world was well-designed and interesting, visually speaking, because it was a perfect balance between familiar and strange. As for the story, some of the apparent mistakes regarding the relationships between Joseph and his siblings can be explained and justified by the fact that everything takes place in his tortured mind, that he feels guilty about their death so he imagines them angry at him and vindictive, and that part of what he sees is created by the Voice who is clearly manipulative in that story.
But, yes, unfortunately, when I think about Collapse, I mostly remember what I didn’t like, and your message sums up exactly how I feel. Too many things were oversimplified, sometimes to the point of inaccuracy, and that really doesn’t do anyone justice…
