HI HELLO here's so many OC questions!! I would love answers for Alex and/or Ronald and/or whoever else you're feeling in the moment. Maybe also Leo. Mix and match or everyone for everything. ANyway.

15. Are they good at cooking? Do they enjoy it? What do others think of their cooking?

24. What is their sleeping pattern like? Do they snore? What do they like to sleep on? A soft or hard mattress?

15: Ronald's cooking is solidly mediocre. Makes abysmal coffee though. His coffee is bad enough that it's a (minor) plot point. When he's living with Donovan & Mary, they (lovingly) banned him from making coffee. His tea is also bad. Really, any beverage other than water made by him is horrible. He just. Doesn't know how to use a coffee maker. He either puts too much water in, pours the grounds in WITH the water, or doesn't put enough water in and it's super bitter.

Leo's cooking is alright! Better than Ronald or Alex's. He makes the best coffee out of the main cast, which is also a minor plot point. His tea is decent too, but James makes better tea than him. He can bake, though. On occasion.

Alex can cook for herself, but not really other people. She knows how to cook basic stuff, and she can follow recipes, but she's not really a cooking for others kind of person if that makes sense. Her coffee is alright, not super good but it's not super bad either.

24: Ronald doesn't sleep nearly enough, and he has nightmares a lot. He probably snores. Sometimes he'll go on walks around the city instead of sleeping, or sit up and read. ~4 hqours of a sleep on a really good day. Much like with therapy, a lot of his life would be improved if he slept better. Unfortunately, his trauma.

Leo has a really regular sleep schedule, which is impressive considering his job and that he lives with James, who has a fucking horrible sleep schedule and wakes up at random hours to wander around their apartment before going back to bed.

Alex does sleep! But she wakes up at 5 in the goddamn morning, because she's absolutely batshit. Occasionally, she goes to bed at 2 in the morning. If she gets seven hours of sleep it's a goddamn miracle and her average is probably about 5 or 6.

44: Ronald's favorite season is the spring. He likes all the flowers, but he doesn't like hot weather that much. Hates cold more, though.

Leo's favorite season is summer, and he loves hot weather. Absolutely despises cold weather.

Alex's favorite season is fall, I think. She likes that it's colder, but not too cold, and she doesn't have to deal with snow & ice, but it also isn't horrifically sunny out.

46: Ronald's first impression generally consists of ''oh he's a grumpy old man''. Which is. Not inaccurate! But it's also so wildly inaccurate. Because his actual personality, which is buried under approximately 17000 layers of regret and bitterness and unprocessed trauma, is really fucking different. It was more obvious when Donovan was alive, and it gets more obvious after Leo almost dies and Ronald gives James that lecture in the supply closet about not being an idiot.

Leo tends to make a really good first impression, especially on strangers. He's good at socializing and being charasmatic & shit. That first impression isn't nessecarily accurate, he's a lot more of a sarcastic little shit (affectionate) than first impressions of him might lead you to believe, but in terms of the face he puts on when he's doing newspaper stuff it's accurate. In private he's quieter.

Alex's first impression depends on the context, but generally it's of being 1) absolutely batshit about her job 2) fairly intense and highly dedicated to whatever she's doing and 3) absolutely batshit in general (affectionate). Second impressions of her normally amount to "why is she breaking into a government office". All of those are extremely accurate. She introduces herself as Alexandrina McLelland, journalist for The Clockwork Herald, unless she's doing something with her family. Then and only then is she Alexandrina Gates. Otherwise, she's too scared of backlash from the amount of people she's pissed off hitting Amelia or her mom to use her actual name.

49: Ronald's most valued object is easy, it's the photographs he keeps in his desk. If I had to pick one, probably the photo of him and Donovan together, rather than the photo of Mary, but both of them honestly. He's sentimental as all hell.

Leo's also sentimental, but not as sentimental as Ronald. It took me a while to think of what would be his most valued object but I think it would be a copy of N or M? by Agatha Christie, because of course the guy who almost gets murdered likes spy murder mysteries. James gave it to him for Christmas in 1942.

Alex, too, is fairly sentimental. Not as much, though, as the other two. Well. She's not as obviously sentimental as the other two, but she still definitely is. The cast of herald is sentiments georg. She has a fountain pen that she really likes. It was a present from her mom when she was in her late teens/early 20s.

50 (for this one I'm skipping essential things like clothes, etc, and just doing the other stuff): Ronald would bring the photographs of Donovan and Mary that he has in his desk, and a cut out of Donovan's obituary. Which he hasn't looked at in 20 years, but he still has a copy of it. He'd also take-- so Ronald kept a copy of Alex's first article, which was also, technically, Donovan's last article. He kept it because, you know, he's her godfather! he's proud of her!! and then he saw the 'and Donovan McLelland' in the byline and almost started crying in the middle of the office.

Leo would bring his cane, the book James gave him, and the photo he has of him and James in 1942-ish. Also, he has a photo of his family (his parents + his sisters & him) and he'd take that, also.

Alex would take the pen from her mom, a cut-out photo she has of her dad (it's the one from donovan's obituary), and her notebook. she refuses to go anywhere without her notebook.

Today I am working on a little side project - a demo for an interactive fiction game set in the Shifterverse. I've had this idea for a year or so but wasn't letting myself touch it, but I guess I'm touching it now? Because why not add more projects to my list. Anyway, here's the first few paragraphs!

Outside your window, someone screams.

The sound quickly falls to laughter, but that doesn’t stop your heart from trying to crawl up your throat. But that’ what you’re here for, isn’t it?

Why else would you have come all the way out here? On Halloween no less? Well, technically it’s not Halloween yet. But the city of Moressau has turned the holiday into a week-long affair, thanks to it’s reputation as the supernatural hub of the country. You name it, it’s here: vampires, werewolves, witches, ghosts.... You even heard someone talking about mermaids as you were waiting for your bags at the airport - though you‘re pretty sure they were just talking out their ass.

Vampires and werewolves are one thing, and everyone knows a witch or a friend of a witch. But mermaids? Please.

halberd: in general, how dangerous is the setting?

this one depends wildly on who you are. a mage? good luck, you're being actively persecuted. a random civilian? could go either way, but you're probably not getting much to eat and may or may not be dealing with some cranky wild animals. a knight or a noble? you're probably doing okay.

flail: is there an aspect of your wip that you’re struggling with?

gotta untangle some plot holes, and lay down some big worldbuilding (politics, climate, culture, stuff like that. i've got ideas kicking around my head. i just need to codify it all.)

shotgun: if characters die in the story, who has the most dramatic death?

someone gets thrown out a window, which is technically an accident on the other character's part, but it was absolutely intentional on mine. very dramatic.

Reeve, "Phone, keys, caffeine pills, and dextroamphetamine pills."

Alyosha, "My phone, wallet, and a good luck charm."

Noah, "A book of matches. I always have at least one book of matches on me. Preferably one in each pocket in case one side gets splashed with gore or, worse, petrol."

2. What does your bedroom look like?

Reeve, "I keep it tidy. I have a full bed (made), a desk and chair, and a bookcase that isn't honestly that full and I don't actually have that much time to read but I like how it looks. Right now the legs of the bed are set into glass jars and bowls because we have a bit of a scorpion problem."

Alyosha, "The bedroom in my trailer is pretty small but I keep it cozy with lots of blankets and pillows."

Noah, "I don't have one that I'd call mine. All the bedrooms in The Church are ours. I sleep where I fit. Sometimes that's on a couch or a cot or in a bed. Sometimes it's beside one of my brothers if the Sanctuary is crowded. The only constant is that I'll feel safe there."

3. What's your coffee order?

Reeve, "Vietnamese iced coffee if they have it. If they don't, extra sweet vanilla iced coffee."

Alyosha, "Tea with milk."

Noah, "Whatever that Sanctuary has stocked. That could be anything from very good espresso to instant powder so you just take what you can get."

Two Truths and a Lie

My first writeblr game! Thank you to @new-royston-cursebreakers for the tag! His poll is here.

I'll put a little bit about my wip first, since I haven't actually talked about it here.

Protag: Ignacio, adventurer dragon fighter blaggard and reluctant necromancer.

Background and motivation: He's been cursed with burning blood, scales, and other dragon-related suffering by a witch king. The curse can only be broken when Ignacio slays the dragon that had been tormenting the realm. This would be difficult enough, but to top it all off, the dragon died on it's own before Ignacio could get to it. Now Ignacio is searching for some way to bring the dragon back from the dead so he can kill it again and finally get back to his old life.

Setting: The world functions on fairy tale logic, where strange and disturbing things are considered normal and almost everyone who could be helpful is unnecessary cryptic. There're plenty of classic fairy tale characters, including talking animals, pixies, trolls, knights, princesses, witches in disguise, and many more.

Antag: Jack, a simple farm boy who's strangely proficient with a sword. He's the classic hero, chosen by fate to stop Ignacio from resurrecting the dragon that laid waste to their kingdom.

🫂 What was your inspiration for your WIP?

short answer: I watched too many murder mystery shows. Longer answer: many different things! miss fisher's murder mysteries, a fanfic by bee_4 called ''the last days of the free angel of carrows'' , a much older wip of mine called ''vampire hunter steampunk story'' that I didn't like the plot of but then went ''what if there were murders murders are fun'' and a two part book series (book 1 is called spectacle, book 2 is called sensational) about a newspaper writer in 1890s france who 1) writes obituaries for anonymous bodies at the morgue 2) has vaguely sci-fi powers related to those dead bodies that she didn't know she had 3) solves two different murder spree cases about it

👽 What do you think the weirdest thing about your WIP is?

The villian in Herald gets her plans/her entire understanding of how crime works from a radio drama about murder. Specifically her murder outfit, but honestly the entirety of her plan in general is so fucking weird. She is absolutely convinced that if you don't wear a trench coat you'll get caught murdering, because she wasn't wearing a trenchcoat the first time. This is. extremely faulty logic at best but it does lead to some amazing outfits.

🕳️ Talk about a research rabbit hole you fell down!

Very pretty old buildings and, spefifically, the MOTHERFUCKING TRAIN STATIONS. god. I googled, quote ''very cool train stations''. I get a list claiming to be the ''22 most beautiful train stations in the world''.

1) it's only train stations in the us, which. famously! the us is not the entire world that's just one country, there's a couple hundred other countries that list is missing even any vague reference of.

2) these train stations are all FUCKING HIDEOUS

also, and this was a really weird part of a similar rabbit hole for me: city halls during the early to mid 20th century, and what hours one could expect them to be open, etc. more pretty building pictures, this time of misc city halls:

in terms of opening hours, it appears that the answer is roughly 9-5 ish.

🏡 Would you live in the world you created? Why or why not?

Probably not, honestly. I do like that passenger pigeons aren't extinct (they are my favorite animal. They have been extinct since 1914 and I am very sad about it), but I don't think I would like living in the 1940s, even the late 1940s. I would miss my friends too much. Also, the 40s are a famously rough decade where some absolutely terrible things happen. Maybe temporarily, like for 3-6 months or whatever, but not forever.

Though. Watching the space race unfold in real time would be fucking cool.

Oh, absolutely Kira. She's incapable of believing people would do such a horrible thing. She's a liiiiiittle bit naive too, so if someone walks up to her and offers her something that's too good to be true, she'll assume that it's a misunderstanding or something and do what they want because? Free money? Free stuff? Helping others? What could possibly go wrong?

Most likely to have a large collection of novelty socks

I hate to break it to you but Kia already has a large collection of novelty socks. And painted glasses. And dreamcatchers. And...

But Tiatha, to everyone's surprise, also collects things. Hers are more of the occult variety, but she absolutely does not need 90% of the stuff that she has. It's all part of her collection. No touchy.

Most likely to challenge run video games (regardless of the existence of video games in your world)

Neia and Xaente, for the same reason - it's the best way to get good at something. It's not enough to simply beat the video game. If other people can do challenge runs, then clearly so can they. Because they're both the best at what they do. Obviously.

Writing Pride Tag

many thanks to @writernopal for the tag! (her masterpiece of a post here!) I'm way late but I have to start coming back to tumblr somehow so why not start with some tag games?

I've been picking away at the next bit of The Runaway while I work on recovering from burnout, and while explaining a bit of what I'm doing to Cryptid he said "It seems like you made all of these characters just to hurt them," so you know I'm doing something right. Anyway, here's a bit of Dean having a pleasant, chill morning!

Sophie narrows her eyes. “I just want to know two things. What poor lunatic did you convince to have a child with you, and...”

Her hand reaches out, faster than Dean can react, grabbing his left shoulder. Her fingers dig into the muscle and scar tissue there with a precise, intimate kind of savagery.

White-hot pain explodes in Dean’s shoulder.

It races down his arm to the very tips of his fingers, every nerve electrified and burning. His knees shake, only reflex keeping them from buckling beneath him. His vision blurs, bursts of multicolor light swim at the edge of his sight, forcing him to close his eyes. A pitiful, desperate whine claws its way out of his throat. His right hand reaches up, curls around Sophie’s wrist.

He doesn’t try to pull her hand away.

Sophie pulls him closer, something dark and gleeful in her voice. “Does this still hurt?”

Dean gasps. On the shaky exhale, he whispers, “Yes.”

“A lot?”

“Yes.”

“Good.” Sophie’s grip tightens, another shockwave of pain, then her hand is gone, slipping out of Dean’s grip as easy as water down a stream.

Theo gently rubbed her back, making small circles between her shoulder blades. “Hey, it’s alright. You don’t have to tell me all of it if you don’t want to. Deep breaths.” Like always, his voice was level, with the same soft, soothing quality it had always had. It seemed to say nothing was amiss, everything was alright, everything would be alright. She knew it wasn’t true, but she let herself believe it anyway. Hiccupping back her sobs, she tried to calm her breathing. It was just a dream. Anvindr couldn’t really hurt her. Theo gave her an encouraging smile and put an arm around her. “Is there anything I can do?” She bit her lip. Was it too much to ask? “Stay with me?” He looked a little surprised at her suggestion, but removed the blanket from around his shoulders. She lay down towards the far edge of her bedroll and turned over, pulling the blanket up to her chest. He draped his blanket over the top of hers and lay down beside her, a little way away. Presumably he wanted to protect her back, which was sweet, but she wanted him closer. She needed to be able to feel that he was right there. She eased herself awkwardly towards him so her back just touched his chest, and let her eyelids droop.

DRAGON EX MACHINA!!!

The ground rumbled beneath Isi’s boots. She grabbed for the nearest rock to steady herself, and felt Robin grab her waist. The gravel at her feet danced back and forth. Earthquake. She hoped the ridges around them would not break apart. She clung to the rock, knowing Robin and Enya were clinging to her. She could not simply feel the rumbling. She could hear it, a deep sound, building bigger and bigger and bigger. A song. A dragon song. Up from the cradle of the mountains rose Fintan; behind him flew Vesta and the others, their chains gone. As they rose into the air, their song continued to build, until it was so loud it overwhelmed everything else. Magic swirled through Isi, filling her up, the wildfire and the ocean undertow all over again, all at once. It tugged at her beaten, heavy body, but she hardly cared, because on its heels came inexplicable joy. A tear spilled down her cheek. Hope welled in her chest, hope like she had not felt since before the battle had begun. The dragons were free. They could leave. Fintan opened his massive jaws, and his kin followed suit. A chill ran down Isi’s spine. Curls of smoke rose from the dragons’ nostrils, black against the grey sky. As one, they roared, and the ground trembled. A wave of orange fire rolled through the passage, over and around Winter’s Hold, consuming everything in its path. Knights screamed. The stone fort seemed to wilt and crumble. Even at a distance, the heat washed over Isi, drying the tears on her face. From Isi’s shoulder, Enya refused to be left out. She roared her own high-pitched roar, and spat her own tiny fireball.
