The largest castle the size of a large medieval city was the former fortress of the Teutonic Order in former Prussia (now Poland). Built for almost 200 years, it reached a total area of ​​about 21 hectares and the volume of buildings exceeded a quarter of a million cubic meters. However, in the 19th century, an unexpected turn occurred, a renewed fascination with the Middle Ages in architecture led to the emergence of neo-Gothic. Today, distant echoes of castle architecture can be found in many buildings from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, including railway stations, official and utility buildings (such as the famous Tower Bridge in London).

In Tokyo itself and in most Japanese cities, next to the characteristic neon signs, we can also find a lot of old wooden city houses called Machiya. Looking at them, you can imagine what most of the urban buildings in this country looked like until the last war.

Toraden (9)

At the end of the first series of travels around the country of Toraden, we will visit the city of Yangdes, which, like the capital of the country, lies on numerous canals and rivers. For this reason, it is called the water city. Yangdes developed from a fishing settlement in the 12th century due to the location of a temple called the "Swan Temple". To this day, the swan is a symbol of Yangdes and the name of the city means "good herald".
